Blur's Self-Titled: And when she lets me slip away… Some bands make their debut with an eponymous album (Placebo did the year before, as would Albarn's second great success Gorillaz) but Blur knew that declaration of self-actualizion was worth saving. Blur by Blur is the fifth studio album by the acclaimed English pop-rock-alternative-shoegaze-anything that'll stick-band, fronted by 90s coverboy Damon Albarn. The album brought us the singles Beetlebum and Song 2, the former of which debuted at #1 on the UK charts, and the latter of which would properly break in the US and give the band the footing on American soil they'd previously missed. Woo-hoo! Despite its mainstream success (the album is certified Platinum) Blur has a distinctly more experimental sound than their Britpop classics and explores rougher indie production sentiments; guitarist Graham Coxon centers his widening musical tastes and produces some of his proudest work, while Albarn has stated that the track On Your Own may be regarded as the first taste of Gorillaz-before-Gorillaz. Although it would not be the end of the road for the band's internal turmoil and eventual reconciliation, it would come to represent an era of growth and emotional authenticity in their music.
The Aqua v. Mattel Lawsuit: Life in plastic is fantastic... but outside of it, mega-corporations are litigious. In 1997, the world was introduced to the Danish-Norwegian group Aqua via their Europop smash hit Barbie Girl; the song was so big, in fact, that Mattel sued the band's American record label MCA over the lyrics and the use of their trademarked shade 'Barbie Pink.' Turns out Lady Justice would not be on Mattel's side as Barbie's original messaging rang true, confirming that girls in the 90s could be anything, including tongue-in-cheek pop performers protected under parody law. Mattel would even petition the Supreme Court (really!) while Aqua and MCA would file a countersuit, but none would find great success in litigation. The whole debacle is best summarized by Judge Kozinski's iconic line, "The parties are advised to chill."

Today’s compilation:
Now That's What I Call Music! 6 2001 Adult Contemporary / Pop-Rock / Alternative Rock / R&B / Teen Pop / Pop / Boy Bands / Post-Grunge
Here we go, folks. Another dispatch from the most pervasive compilation series to ever grace US shores: it's the triple-platinum-selling,  #1-spot-on-the-Billboard-200-album-chart-achieving, sixth installment from the king conglomerate of repackaging contemporary chart hits itself; the one and only Now That's What I Call Music!
youtube
Lots of fun stories behind this eclectic set of pop songs that, overall, feels like turning on your favorite top 40 radio station sometime between 2000 and 2001, but let's start with what was probably the most popular tune in the entirety of those two full years: Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me." If you've ever wondered why or how a song on which Shaggy himself doesn't really do that much came to be the signature hit of his whole career, it's because it wasn't actually ever intended to have been released as a single in the first place! Presumably, this was just a song that was to be included on his 2000 album, Hot Shot, that would serve as a showcase for another budding vocalist, Rik Rok, who sings the song's long pre-choruses, choruses, and bridge. Now, nothing substantial ever ended up materializing for Rik Rok after this song, but the story behind its global takeover started with a radio DJ in Hawaii who downloaded Hot Shot from a p2p network, like Napster, and then decided that his favorite track on it was "It Wasn't Me." He then played it on the air and received numerous requests to keep playing it, and that clamoring audience response then persuaded MCA to release it as the album's lead single, three months after the LP had already dropped.
Also, Shaggy became known as something of a heavy sampler and interpolator, with his follow-up single, "Angel," revitalizing the melody from Juice Newton's country-pop classic, "Angel of the Morning," and a popular remix of "Boombastic" using Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" (I actually wrote about how we should be taking that Marvin song off of our collective sex playlists earlier this week). But something that probably slipped under some people's radar is how he just pretty much took the intro from a song that’s a bit more obscure in order to make "It Wasn't Me": "Smile Happy," by War, the band who became famous in the 70s for songs like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends," all of which are from the same album. Listen to that song's opening! It's basically the same!
youtube
I don't think War or any of its members ever received a songwriting credit for "It Wasn't Me" either, but they did when One Direction's Liam Payne made his solo debut with "Strip That Down" in 2017, which interpolated Shaggy's song. So, nice to see that War finally started to accumulate some scratch from those few bars!
Next, *NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye," the lead single from No Strings Attached that served doubly as a dynamic teen pop breakup anthem and possibly as something of a middle finger to their former manager, Lou Pearlman, as well. It's an early 2000s pop masterpiece that comes from the famed Cheiron Studios in Sweden, which gave us the brunt of all those teen pop hits that use similar production techniques and lyrics that don't always quite make sense 😅. The most iconic producer from that teen pop haven was Max Martin, but he actually wasn't directly involved with this one. Instead, other guys from Cheiron produced and wrote it: Jake Schulze, Kristian Lundin—who was also behind "Tearin' Up My Heart"—and Andreas Carlsson.
And it's Carlsson who actually first took the song to UK boy band 5ive, who had previously charted Stateside in the top 10 with "When the Lights Go Out," in 1998. Carlsson's original conception of "Bye Bye Bye" had a rap chorus on it, and 5ive ended up really despising it, so much so, that one of the members actually called security on him 😂. Apparently, 5ive had decided that they wanted to be a "rap band" and sound like Eminem, so this "Bye Bye Bye" song, despite its chorus, was very much not for them anymore. So, the tune was then later retooled for *NSYNC, who would end up taking it to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, and it then summarily became one of the most memorable songs of the early 2000s and the boy band/teen pop era as a whole. And as a result, 5ive would never chart again anywhere after 2001 😬.
OK, now for Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open.” Did you know that this fucking song, the band's only single to top the Billboard Hot 100, which also contains some utterly incomprehensible choices in enunciation from lead vocalist Scott Stapp, took home a Grammy for Best Rock Song? Unreal, right? And what might be even more unreal is the fact that notoriously cool dude Dave Grohl actually genuinely loves it, having called it one of the most amazing songs he’s ever heard! What, Dave?!
And then there's U2's "Beautiful Day," a simply epic song to buy shampoo to that marked a departure from the electronic dance experiments that the band had become known for in the 90s, and began their transformation into the most ubiquitously annoying and insufferable act in the world for the next 15 years or so. Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite's production was really stellar on it, but a writer at NME wrote that John Lennon's assassin should be let out of prison so he could shoot Bono for making this one. And I mean, that's certainly a drastic measure, but then that other album wouldn't have ended up invading all of our iPhones in the 2010s, so... 🤷‍♂️....actually, I'm just kidding. Wanting people shot for making songs you don't like is unethical. Don't do that!
And lastly, I totally forgot that K-Ci & JoJo's "Crazy" even existed before I gave this album a spin today. Those guys were probably the most iconic vocal male R&B duo of the Y2K era, and were known especially for their super soulful adult contemporaryish slow jam-ballads, like "All My Life" and "Tell Me It's Real." But I don't think I'd heard "Crazy" once since it came out over 20 years ago, so, that was a total jolt of nostalgia for me, personally, right there. And I really wasn't cognizant of it at the time, but that song's also one of the first big hits to use a considerable amount of autotune on it too, long before people like T-Pain would go on to define their career with it towards the end of the decade. So, it's sort of a trailblazing song, I guess, but it was also K-Ci & JoJo's final appearance on the Hot 100 as well, so also bittersweet. And there’s another song with some autotune on here too, an early 2000s R&B classic, “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right),” by 3LW. It doesn’t use the autotune to the same extent, but it’s there in the first verse. Fantastic throwback.
So, this album was a lot of fun. Always love taking these trips down memory lane and re-experiencing, evaluating, and learning all these backstories behind these songs that I grew up with years ago 😊. Now was probably something of a nuisance when it arrived in the US because all it did was cash-grabbingly gather big chart hits onto CD, but now it's just a great collection of artifacts that document the music of bygone eras.

USAF will retire U-2 Dragon Lady fleet in 2026

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) plans to retire its U-2 Dragon Lady fleet in fiscal year 2026 - but so far, officials say they are working hard to keep the iconic high-altitude surveillance planes flying and testing the technology that can be used in future aircraft.
The plan to retire the U-2 was first reported by Aviation Week and the Air Force Times, citing a line contained in the Air Force budget documents that "the expectations are that the protective language of the NDAA will be waived ... allowing the USAF to move forward with the withdrawal of resources from the U-2 project in fiscal year 2026."
Colonel William Collins, senior leader of high-altitude intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance material, confirmed the plan to reporters at the Life Cycle Industry Days conference on August 1º - the first official Air Force comment on the future of U-2 since the plan emerged.
Tumblr media
The famous "selfie" next to the Chinese balloon.
“Our focus now is to work with the Air Combat Command to maintain the full viability of the plane throughout its lifetime, while maintaining maximum space for senior leaders,” Collins told Air & Space Forces magazine. "We are working for USAF to the best of our ability. But what we are doing predominantly is to focus on how to ensure that we do not create a scenario in which we are not able to meet the needs of the mission because of things like obsolescence."
While the original U-2 first flew in 1955, the current aircraft dates from the 1980s, with the last delivered in 1989. This was followed by an update in the early 1990s. But the average age of the fleet is now almost 40 years, and the Air Force faces a decrease in the sources of manufacture of key parts, Collins said.
Still, the U-2 remains unique in the Air Force inventory as the only manned high-altitude ISR platform in the service. An icon of the Cold War era, the Dragon Lady returned to the headlines earlier this year, when it flew over the Chinese surveillance balloon that was transiting through the continental United States. The Pentagon later released an image of the cockpit of the U-2 showing the balloon.
Tumblr media

With the ability to fly at altitudes above 70,000 feet, the demand of commanders continues, Collins said, so the Air Force wants to keep the fleet in a position to fly until 2026. The USAF requested $16.8 million in research and development, $54.7 million in acquisition and $17 million in operations and maintenance for U-2 in fiscal year 2024.
The use of the aircraft is also not limited only to ISR, said Colonel Joshua Williams, executive officer of the program for ISR and special operations forces.
“We are using the U-2 in unique and innovative ways and as a substitute platform, reducing the risk to our fifth-generation fighters,” Williams said. "All we are doing is reducing the risk and increasing the technical maturity of the things we will use in the F-35 and F-22.
According to the budget documents, this "material" includes sensors and resources related to the Air Force Advanced Battle Management System and the Pentagon's broader Joint Command and Control effort of All Domains.
"On what we are focused on is a code-compatible processor feature that provides open mission systems, so we can confirm that this capability can be leveraged on fifth and sixth generation platforms," Collins said. "We are also looking to demonstrate some [signal intelligence] features that can also be potentially used ?? on future platforms".
In addition to reducing the risk and releasing fighters such as the F-35 and F-22, using the U-2 as a substitute brings another benefit.
"We are focusing on showing that as we develop future capacity, we are not only making the survival capacity, but also the ability to connect and use sensors, not being platform-specific, but platform agnostic," Collins said.
Tumblr media
U-2 Dragon Lady needs external support to land safely. Illustrative image.
Particularly for ABMS, Air Force leaders emphasized the importance of sensors being able to fit into a broader architecture.
But while the U-2 can benefit sixth-generation platforms and ABMS testing future technology, the Air Force's plans for its main high-altitude ISR mission are also fundamentally changing. The service's other high-altitude ISR platform, the RQ-4 Global Hawk drone, is scheduled to be retired in 2027, one year after the retirement of the U-2 fleet.
“There will be much more space involved,” Williams said. "Especially in the contested environments, the U-2 and these platforms fly, it's a different problem and a different answer."

I am covid positive right now and still laid up in bed. We were supposed to get our SNAP benefits today, and I've been using Instacart to get groceries because I knew Snap was coming in, so we would be able to afford it... WELL, SNAP DIDN'T COME IN.
We spent HOURS last month in the office filing things and ensuring we were all set. Multiple people told us we were all set. Apparently, our account is closed because of "insufficient documentation,"... despite the dozens of files we brought in last month and the workers telling us we were good. It's a snow day, and the office isn't open, so I can't call anyone to fix it.
Im disabled, I cant work a regular job. The job I'm currently working (after-school program for kids) I haven't been able to work for two weeks. My husband does the same job. I am not gonna be able to re-up this job, tho. I love it because It's so exhausting. I can't do things at home after, and I'm in so much pain I crash the next day. I've made $270 from that job for two weeks of work. I can't sustain us for the month on that, and I'm paying for food and meds.
It's hard enough that my state health care is trying to drop me, claiming my husband and I make a ridiculous amount of money cause they think he's at his old job (It was emotionally destroying him); he quit 4 months ago. I was rationing meds last month. I have Asthma, MDD, GAD, ASD/ADHD, MCAS, POTS, UC, and EDS. Rationing meds means I'm putting my life at risk. The gov in the US is so worried about someone getting 300$ they can only spend on groceries and MEDICAL CARE when they deem they don't deserve it that I am having to RATION FOOD AND MEDS.
I even had to make my own hodge-podge dog food for my service dog (A mix of her dry, wet, rice, and peas to keep her eating). This dog's life is more important to me than my own. She's saved my life, and gotten me diagnosed with half of my conditions because she figured out something was wrong.
All this to say, the only income I have gonna have for a while is commissions so please.

Jimmy Buffett "Take Another Road" Off to See the Lizard (1989) MCA Music Entertainment Group
For those who don't know… Jimmy Buffett, an American icon, has passed away.
I was formally introduced to his music through a friend sharing the song "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (1978), but I'd, of course, heard "Margaritaville" (1977) prior to that. When I finally decided to investigate his songs properly… I became a fan. The song I've linked is one that I feel like I can relate to more than any of Mr. Buffett's songs. I frequently wonder how life would be had I taken "another road"…
Jimmy Buffett's funtastic mix of country, calypso, easy listening, and pop has been a favorite of mine for many years. I've listened to Jimmy's SiriusXM radio station, "Radio Magaritaville", off and on over the years and enjoyed all of his music, as well as music by his friends and partners. I'm very sad to hear that he's no longer with us. However, I'm glad to know that he went peacefully, surrounded by people who loved him.
Rest in Peace, Mr. James William Buffett. And thanks for all the wonderful memories.
Sincerely, J

The thing I love about the crows is that everything they do is so teenaged thinking. Like Kaz took one sip of horny juice and went to fight the equivalent of god okay, like a late twenty year old wouldn't do that but you know who would? A 17 year old. Kuwei is most definitely going through his emo phrase, he dead ass did "yo no hablo kerch." Iconic. There is absolutely much more but these two always made me wheeze. All the hijinks had Teenagers by mca written all over it. And I love it.

The Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand: An essential part of the Auckland skyline, the Sky Tower was developed by Skycity Entertainment Group for both local utility and tourism appeal, and was completed in 1997. At 328 metres/1,076 feet tall, it was the single tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere until facing competition from Indonesia's Autograph Tower in 2020. 23 years at the top isn't a bad run! Unlike a few other iconic pieces of city architecture, the Sky Tower is hugely functional and serves as a massive telecommunications hub. The aerial at the top of the tower hosts the largest FM combiner in the world, which combines with 58 wireless microwave links to provide television, wireless internet, RT, FM radio, and weather measurement services. Or, if you're more enticed by scarfing down a gourmet steak dinner then chucking it up again midair, the tower has a rotating restaurant and controlled jumping on offer.

“The Beastie Boys lived & breathed the Lower East Side as the Lower East Side lived & breathed the Beastie Boys. MCA, Ad-Rock & Mike D put this neighborhood on the hip-hop map not just by calling it their home, but putting it front & center on one of their top albums. There’s no denying these guys were punks, maybe not their neighbors’ favorite neighbors, but that’s what the Lower East Side was & always will be: a home to people who do things a little differently.”
