A distância entre nós – Maggie O’Farrell
Tumblr media

“Time runs only one way.” . This book, while including fictionalized circumstances of the death of Shakespeare’s son, actually centers around a possible life of his wife, Agnes. . I believe that Willy Shakes hated women, but this book posits that perhaps he loved his wife. Too late to ask him, I suppose. It’s interesting that the author chose to name the book Hamnet, in fact. Not interesting enough to look up an explanation, mind you. . I read this in an audiobook, and will, thusly, spend the rest of the week speaking with an accent of questionable origin. . Four stars. Bring the tissues. . Content warnings: loss of a child, douche bag husbands, child abuse . #HistoricalFiction. Recommended for my 2022 (yes, not a type) #12Friends12Book. Swipe for the rest of the neglected list. . . #bookreview #BookQuote #Hamnet #MaggieOFarrell https://www.instagram.com/p/CoJNzcTLWtg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I was delighted to have the opportunity to re-read this gorgeous book recently as part of the #hfbookclub and I’m so glad I did - it was even more memorable and astonishing the second time round. You really need to go into Esme Lennox with as little information as possible, so forgive me if I’m a bit vague. ⁣ ⁣ In the present timeline, we meet a young woman called Iris who receives a phone call telling her that her great aunt Esme is being released from an institution where she has spent the last sixty years. It’s incredibly confusing for Iris as she had been told her grandmother Kitty was an only child. ⁣ ⁣ The narrative switches between Iris, Esme and Kitty’s point of views and back in time in the most unique way that I think I’ve ever experienced a book and it’s all for a good reason - I promise. As Iris begins to learn more about Esme and her past, secrets are revealed that were thought long since buried. ⁣ ⁣ Some reviewers have commented on the way in which the POV’s skip around and I can completely understand why this might be confusing, I’m sure I felt the same way on my first read of this novel and it certainly takes a while to get settled and comfortable with the writing style. ⁣ ⁣ However, once I was in, I never wanted to leave this place that O’Farrell has created. It’s a commentary on the dynamics of family, betrayals and secrets, the treatment of women generally speaking and those that are perhaps viewed as not conforming to what is perceived as “normal.”⁣ ⁣ For me, this is the perfect example of how diverse and creative Maggie O’Farrell is as an author. She weaves a sense of time and place that is so beautiful, it has to be read to be believed. I would certainly tumble down any metaphorical rabbit hole to become lost in one of her books and I know I’ll be re-reading Esme Lennox many times in the years to come. ⁣ ⁣ Five faultless stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #reviewingbooksonthegram #thevanishingactofesmelennox #maggieofarrell #britishfemaleauthors #favouritefemaleauthor #favouritebooksever #fivestarreads2022 #unforgettablestories #memorablenovels https://www.instagram.com/p/CnchjaWrmmH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

July TBR. I went for some not as chunky books this month since last month I read all the chunky books and some books with heavy topics as well, so needed something a bit lighter. 📚I used @booksnest’s fictionary prompts to create this TBR. 📚I’ve already dived into Shakespeare and the Countess and it’s very good #books #julytbr #nonfiction #fiction #historicalfiction #mystery #shakespeare #globetheatre #chrislaoutaris #mlrio #maggieofarrell #xochitlgonzalez #fionadavis #sallyrooney #colsonwhitehead (at Monterey, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfhDZiROTPg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“What is the word, Judith asks her mother, for someone who was a twin but is no longer a twin?” I go into (almost) every new book the same. Kind of reluctantly. Head still full of what I just read. Pretty sure the next one won’t live up. And I am proved wrong almost every time. “Hamnet” is a fictional account of Shakespeare's son, Hamnet, who died at age 11 in 1596. Maggie O’Farrell writes so evocatively. Her descriptions of grief are so raw and heartbreaking but never feel like they tip over into melodrama. The details of the time and area are so vivid you can smell the earth of a forest in the country, the stench of a 16th century London street. And this version of Agnes/Anne Hathaway is by far my favourite interpretation of a woman people can only guess at knowing. “He has, Agnes sees, done what any father would wish to do, to exchange his child’s suffering for his own, to take his place, to offer himself up in his child’s stead so that the boy might live. She will say all this to her husband, later, after the play has ended, after the final silence has fallen, after the dead have sprung up to take their places in the line of players at the edge of the stage.” . . . . . . . . #bookstagram #booklovers #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramza #southafricanreaders #bookstagrammer #bookstagramsouthafrica #readersofinstagram #sareaders #literaryfiction #igreads #bookheaven #readerofinstagram #bookish #booksonbooksonbooks #belletristbabes #read #nextread #hamnet #maggieofarrell #tinderpress (at Durbanville) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfT5V9ELdTZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

4/5 Sterne. #Love #1564 #1616 #todestag #rockofhistorie #Williamshakespeare #patreon #Hamnet #Bookstagram #JudithundHamnet #MaggieOFarrell #Geschichte #Roman https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc2I2HsqXo_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hamnet – Maggie O’Farrell
Tumblr media

“I swam in dangerous waters, both metaphorically and literally. It was not so much that I didn't value my existence but more that I had an insatiable desire to push myself to embrace all that it could offer.” ✨❤️✨ Maggie O’Farrell’s I Am, I Am, I Am: 17 Brushes with Death is a memoir that is unputdownable, thought provoking and evocative. Recounting her life through her brushes with death, O’Farrell unflinchingly takes us through some incredibly inmate and personal events while examining the complexities of life, danger, death and the choices we make. Beautifully written, this book will make you laugh, cry, think and flinch, sometimes all at once. O’Farrell is completely honest and open about her experiences and the way they changed her, both as an individual but also as a mother. The emotion packed into this book is palpable, and it quite honestly feels like O’Farrell is recounting these events to the reader as a friend. I don’t want to say too much more about this book; its best read without knowing the gritty details. I will say that this is a book I’m going to be thinking about for quite a long time. ✨❤️✨ I Am, I Am, I Am is book 59 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookequote #iamiamiam #maggieofarrell #iamiamiamseventeenbrusheswithdeath #memior #thoughprovokingreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CifqZvLPx5x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Grief is just the other side of love"
We were looking at this beautiful piece of embroidery she had made, and she turned it over and the back was much more complicated, quite messy. In a sense that is what grief is: you turn love inside out, like a sock or a glove, and that's what you find, isn't it?
Maggie O'Farrell, interviewed by Lisa Allardice in The Guardian Review, 27 March 2021

I think some books have been conspiring to make me read “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare. It also seems to me I’ve never read it (shame 😬). So, read it I shall 🧐 As for “Hamnet”, the book I’ve read because of you, bookstagrammers, it is, as expected, heartbreaking and beautiful; the book that can’t be read in public unless you want other people see you cry (yep, I, too, made this mistake 😭). #bookstagram #bookstagrammers #instabooks #instabookstagram #whatimreadingnow #whattoread #whattoreadnext #booksthatmakeyoucry #hamnet #hamlet #maggieofarrell #williamshakespeare #historicalfictionbooks #britishliterature #britishauthors (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRWwwcOLoRc/?utm_medium=tumblr
