I’ve recently got a lot more settled with reading outside my comfort zone and as a result, am now an avid reader of fantasy novels. Priory Of The Orange Trees was always on my radar to get to but I was slightly intimidated by the sheer size of this tome. Luckily @buddyreadbooknook hosted a buddy read where I could read a little at a time, at a fair pace that wasn’t overwhelming.⁣ ⁣ Firstly, I am full of admiration for any author who can create a world such as this. This is the story of a Queen who is expected to produce a daughter (and heir) to protect the kingdom which has become divided from its neighbours. We also hear from one of the women closest to the Queen, Ead who protects her with forbidden magic but has an incredible back story and huge expectations for her own future. Meanwhile, an old and deadly enemy awakes and if the kingdoms are unable to reach a compromise all hell is destined to break loose. ⁣ ⁣ Everything about this story is so intricately detailed, from the complex and convoluted plot, to the extensive cast of characters to the magic system and the villains which have been beautifully drawn. It took me a while (I have to admit), to get to grips with who everyone was, their connections with other characters and at times, I did get confused as to how it was all going to come together. It’s certainly a book I would recommend giving a second reading as I think a lot more could be potentially picked up and understood. ⁣ ⁣ Nevertheless, this was a wild, epic ride through a fascinating world with excellent, representation and strong, memorable female leads. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book in the series. Psssst there’s dragons too!!⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookreviewsofbookstagram #prioryoftheorangetree #samanthashannon #fantasynovelseries #fantasynovelfan #bookswithdragons #fourstarread #readthisbookifyoulikefantasy #epicfantasyreads https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckgr5G1LR9K/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hi everyone, it’s FRIDAY and time for another book haul 😜 Here I have two @illumicrate exclusive editions that arrived before the end of the year and a lovely clothbound classic, The Aeneid which I read with a great group of bookstagrammers and really enjoyed. The Luminaries looks absolutely beautiful. “In Hemlock Falls, where nightmares rise, only the Luminaries stand between humanity and these monsters bent on devastation. Winnie Wednesday knows the only way to redeem her disgraced family is to pass the Luminary trials, but when she encounters an unknown monster, she realises she must also protect Hemlock Falls and her heart from a former friend with secrets of his own.” Then we have The Red Scholar’s Wake which I’m initially a bit unsure of but we’ll give it a go! It’s described as “an exciting space opera and a beautiful romance, from an exceptional SF author.” I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #ohlookmorebooks #anotherbookhaul #illumicrateexclusiveedition #theluminariesseries #theluminariessusandennard #theaeneidofvirgil #theredscholarswake #aliettedebodard #neverstopbuyingbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CqLxVSBLpaw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A Fire Endless is the second book in the Elements Of Cadence series and just as fantastical and entertaining as the first book. This is the story of two clans, East and West, Breccans and Tamerlaines and it follows the people of these lands who are struggling to be at peace with each other and also appease the spirits of fire, earth, sky, wind and water. ⁣ ⁣ In this instalment, (without giving too much away from the first book!), we find a particular spirit, Bane the spirit of the North Wind wreaking havoc over both lands leading the Tamerlane bard Jack and the heiress of the East, Adaira struggling to find new ways to ease their struggles. Meanwhile, Torin and Sidra are having to cope with a new menace, a deadly and mysterious sickness that leads Torin on a mission to ask the spirits for help before more lives are lost. ⁣ ⁣ I buddy read this series with @keeperofpages and it was such a lovely world to escape to, filled with magical moments and unforgettable characters. I felt I identified more with Torin and Sidra, particularly the latter, who is a wonderfully brave and sympathetic medicine woman for the East. I also greatly appreciated that the romance elements were tasteful and never the full focus or drive of the narrative. ⁣ ⁣ This is a brilliant book for fans of fantasy and those beautiful other-worldly elements that take you to a different time and place. It was engaging, exciting and adventurous and I look forward to picking up more from this author in the future. ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #readingonthegram #reviewingbooksonthegram #elementsofcadence #rebeccaross #afireendless #illumicrateeditions #beautifulbooksofinstagram #booksandplants🌵📖 #stencillededgeswelove #fantasyduologies https://www.instagram.com/p/CqKhmkvr09_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A few years ago now, I read two of Kate Quinn’s absolutely brilliant Empress of Rome series and really loved them. Then for some reason I can’t pinpoint, she slipped off my radar and I didn’t explore any more of her historical fiction. Well, thank goodness for the members of #hfbookclub choosing The Rose Code as our monthly buddy read. It reminded me of how fantastic the authors writing is and how beautifully she develops her characters. ⁣ ⁣ The Rose Code is set in 1940 in the UK where specific women are being asked to help with the war effort in the mysterious and top secret Bletchley Park. Three very different young women, Osla a sparkling debutante dating Prince Philip of Greece, forthright and sensible Mab and quiet genius Beth who has a knack for difficult puzzles. ⁣ ⁣ All women assist to some degree with the decoding of enemy messages but as the story unravels, we find out much more about each woman as an individual. We know about difficulties in their past, stresses in their present and worries for their future. However, by 1947, one woman is confined to an asylum and the friendship between the three has been destroyed. ⁣ ⁣ This is primarily a story of war and loss for our female leads who undergo an incredible amount of pressure in both their working and personal lives, during such a tumultuous time for the world. It’s a narrative rich and detailed with so many different layers and avenues to explore that it’s a pleasure to get lost in it. The characters burst off the page with their individuality and vibrant personalities to the point where I felt truly attached to them as the story progressed. ⁣ ⁣ It appears I now need to read everything Rose Quinn has ever written, 😂 this is a stonkingly good read and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! ⁣ ⁣ 4.5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣#bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #readingonmykindle #therosecode #katequinn #historicalfictionreview #reviewingbooksonthegram #unforgettablereads #highlyrecommendedbooks #booksandplants🌵📖 #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutworldwar2 ⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpx6n2BLprs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and happy Monday! Apparently it’s Blue Monday today, the most miserable day of the year. It was a tough one at work but I’m determined not to fall into the blues 😂 so here are three beautiful hardbacks I treated myself to just before Christmas. I’ve seen The Golden Mole around for a little while now and after flicking through it, I’m really excited to get to it. This is described as a “lavishly illustrated collection of the lives of some of the Earth’s astounding animals.” For example, did you know that a pangolin keeps its tongue folded in a pouch by its hip? Or that a wombat once inspired a love poem? 😂 Gosh I’m excited for this! 2023 is finally the year I tackle War and Peace! Along with over 500 other people, I am reading a chapter a day of this beautiful classic for the very first time. The readalong is hosted by @footnotes.and.tangents so check it out if you fancy joining us! #whiskeyandperseverance Finally, I was far more attracted to the title of this nonfiction book rather than the cover - The Book Of Phobias and Manias. I know I’m an arachnophobe, I’m pretty certain I have bibliomania 🤣 but want to know another fun fact about me? I have a phobia of cotton wool! Honestly, it makes me feel ill 🤢 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #anotherbookhaul #thegoldenmoleandotherlivingtreasure #katherinerundell #warandpeace #leotolstoy #buddyreadswithfriends #thebookofphobiasandmanias #katesummerscale #newbooksplease #onthetbrpile https://www.instagram.com/p/CnfUEnjrbEx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and happy Monday! I’m on a little holiday in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and really enjoying myself. Here’s a book haul! I’ve actually just finished Fairy Tale, Stephen King’s latest novel with the #keeperofking bookclub. I think I was one of the few people that really enjoyed it after a bit of a ropey mid-section. Review to follow! I couldn’t resist the latest McEwan novel. Lessons tells the story of Roland who sometimes rides with the tides of history but more often struggles against it. From the Suez crisis to the Cuban missile crisis, the fall of the Berlin Wall to the current pandemic and climate change, Roland seeks solace through every possible means and his journey raises important questions for us all. I’ve become a bit obsessed with TJ Klune after adoring The House In The Cerulean Sea and Under The Whispering Door so preordering this special edition of Wolfsong was a no-brainer. Ox was twelve years old when his Daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He says that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left. Looks like a heartbreaking read and I can’t wait!! I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #fairytale #stephenking #lessons #ianmcewan #wolfsong #tjklune #ohlookmorebooks #bookhauling #neverstopbuyingbooks #insatiablebookworm #gimmeallthebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/ClOrLt-rHIA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The House With The Golden Door is the second book in @elodielharper magnificent Wolf Den trilogy. The author re-imagines life in Pompeii but gives the women of the story all of her focus and their own, very important voice. If you haven’t read The Wolf Den, please do, it’s a fantastic account of a brothel that actually existed (and you can still visit) and we get to know women that were enslaved or worked at the brothel and what life was like for them in such a precarious and unpredictable world.⁣ ⁣ Mostly we focus on our female lead, Amara. She was previously a doctor’s daughter but when her father died, she was sold into slavery. At the beginning of this novel, she finds herself in a very different situation which on the surface, looks as if her life has improved but dig a little deeper and we find that her life is still quite dangerous and unstable depending on the decisions that she chooses to make. ⁣ ⁣ I love Amara as a character. She’s wise beyond her years, determined and intelligent. She’s learned a lot since the end of the last novel and through some traumatic circumstances that have led to the loss of those precious to her. However, the metaphorical road that she chooses to travel in THWTGD has the potential to change her life as she knows it forever. ⁣ ⁣ There’s some fantastic characterisation in this series - as well as Amara we also learn more about Britannica (who I’ve got a soft spot for and who continues to intrigue me!). There are several returning characters, many with such strong personalities from The Wolf Den which on one hand, feels familiar and safe and on the other hand opens up the story in a villainous, more frightening manner. And that ending? I cannot WAIT for the final book in the series!⁣ ⁣ Thank you so much to @sandladysbooks for buddy reading this with me!⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ ⁣ #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #buddyreadswithcath #thehousewiththegoldendoor #elodieharper #wolfdentrilogy #theancientworld #favouriteseries❤️ #favouritetrilogies #enslavedwomen #readingwithmyfriends #womenledfiction #secondbookinatrilogy #readthisseriesyouwontbedisappointed https://www.instagram.com/p/ChaMH87rlPU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! You know the drill, we’re halfway through the week, the weekend is in sight and I’m back today with a post inspired by the lovely Sally @salboreads who did some character pairings. That is, characters from different books who you think go well together. From The Observations, Bessy Buckley, a feisty young Irish maid and in Fingersmith, Sue Trinder, who becomes a ladies maid as part of an elaborate scheme. I think both these girls would find similarities between each other and could even learn things from the other! From The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August, the title character Harry August and from Life After Life, Ursula Todd. Both are time travellers and could have a lot to talk about sharing their experiences and able to understand exactly what the other goes through. From Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet and from Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Tess D’Urberville. I can imagine these ladies taking long walks together and Elizabeth bringing a bit of humour and light into Tess’ life which if you’ve read the book, you can understand why she might need it! 😂 This was fun! Tagging anyone who’d like to play or let me know in the comments - what character pairings would you choose? #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #instagrambookchallenge #characterpairings #theobservations #janeharris #fingersmith #sarahwaters #bessybuckley #suetrinder #thefirstfifteenlivesofharryaugust #harryaugust #lifeafterlife #kateatkinson #clairenorth #ursulatodd #prideandprejudice #janeausten #elizabethbennet #tessofthedurbervilles #thomashardy #tessdurberville https://www.instagram.com/p/CiNqmyarrbA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and hope your Monday has got off to a great start. I’m still doing half days at work because my body clearly hates me 😅 but here I am with my Monday book haul! (Some things don’t change! 🤣) You might already know that certain covers do entice me to buy them and Chouette was really screaming my name. It’s a dark modern fable about mothering an unusual child - an owl baby. It will grip you in its talons and never let go. Why do I feel as if this could be me?? 🤣🤣🤣 I’m taking part in the #greatthomashardyreadalong2022 and it’s been one of my favourite things this year. A Pair Of Blue Eyes is one of the Hardy books I haven’t read and tells the tale of Elfride, daughter of a Rector who faces an agonising choice between two men - the boyish architect Stephen Smith and the older literary man, Henry Knight as the two friends become rivals for her affections. Finally Wuhan, a real chunker of a book at 608 pages. Set in 1937, this epic historical fiction is set in China where Wuhan stood alone in a whirlwind of war and violence against the Japanese army. This forced unprecedented culture and political changes that shaped China’s future. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments. Have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #ohnoanotherbooktogetthrough #chouette #claireoshetsky #apairofblueeyes #thomashardy #wuhan #johnfletcher #historicalfictionbooks #classicnovelsnerd #quirkybook #readinganythingandeverything #obsessedwithbooks📚 #newbooksplease https://www.instagram.com/p/ChkjiucrvM9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! It’s Wednesday, we’re almost at the end of the week and today I’m sharing my #top3under300 - that is, 3 books under 300 pages that I would highly recommend. I could have chosen so many more but these three were near the front of my book trolley so there we go! What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky is one of my favourite short story collections. There was one story that actually made me gasp at the end, it was brilliant! Charlotte’s Web is one of my favourite children’s books, despite being a huge arachnophobe! I love Fern’s relationship with Wilbur the pig and of course, the ending 😭 Finally, The Mermaid Of Black Conch was one of my favourite books of last year. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I thought it was such an original, beautiful piece of work 😍 #bookstagramuk #bookstagramchallenge #scottishbookstagrammer #whatitmeanswhenamanfallsfromthesky #lesleynnekaarimah #charlottesweb #ebwhite #themermaidofblackconch #moniqueroffey #recommendedreads👍 #shortbooksiswhereitsat #fivestarreads🤩 #readthesebooksnow https://www.instagram.com/p/CqGlm0ILYdg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! It’s a new week and you know what that means. Book haul! (two of which I have already read - The Memory Of Animals and The Warden). AD-PR PRODUCT - I was kindly sent The Memory Of Animals, @writerclairefuller new book out on the 20th April from the lovely Jasmin at @vikingbooksuk I’ll be reviewing it closer to release date but I just want to say WOW 😍😏 The Warden is the first novel in Trollope’s Chronicles Of Barsetshire. It was my first introduction to Anthony Trollope’s work and I really enjoyed it. Finally, the #keeperofkingbookclub hosted by @keeperofpages read the epic Swan Song last year as it had been compared to Stephen King’s The Stand. We all enjoyed it so much that we decided to add another Robert McCammon to our reading list this year! It’s described as a “richly imagined, spellbinding portrait of the magical worldview of the young - and of innocence lost.” I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #yesmorebooks #anotherbookhaul #thememoryofanimals #clairefuller #thewarden #anthonytrollope #thechroniclesofbarsetshire #boyslife #robertmccammon #buddyreadswithfriends #ohlookmorebookstoread https://www.instagram.com/p/CqBeHo6LWdN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
