I’ve recently got a lot more settled with reading outside my comfort zone and as a result, am now an avid reader of fantasy novels. Priory Of The Orange Trees was always on my radar to get to but I was slightly intimidated by the sheer size of this tome. Luckily @buddyreadbooknook hosted a buddy read where I could read a little at a time, at a fair pace that wasn’t overwhelming.⁣ ⁣ Firstly, I am full of admiration for any author who can create a world such as this. This is the story of a Queen who is expected to produce a daughter (and heir) to protect the kingdom which has become divided from its neighbours. We also hear from one of the women closest to the Queen, Ead who protects her with forbidden magic but has an incredible back story and huge expectations for her own future. Meanwhile, an old and deadly enemy awakes and if the kingdoms are unable to reach a compromise all hell is destined to break loose. ⁣ ⁣ Everything about this story is so intricately detailed, from the complex and convoluted plot, to the extensive cast of characters to the magic system and the villains which have been beautifully drawn. It took me a while (I have to admit), to get to grips with who everyone was, their connections with other characters and at times, I did get confused as to how it was all going to come together. It’s certainly a book I would recommend giving a second reading as I think a lot more could be potentially picked up and understood. ⁣ ⁣ Nevertheless, this was a wild, epic ride through a fascinating world with excellent, representation and strong, memorable female leads. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book in the series. My sadness at missing the Broken Binding’s edition has been healed - I snagged Illumicrate’s Roots of Chaos set in the presale this morning!!!

Now the dilemma: do I wait to read a Day of Fallen Night until this set gets here? Or do I buy a standard copy on release day so I don’t have to wait? A conundrum. Please advise.

Two books that I have read and LOVED this last year—The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, and The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. For The Priory of the Orange Tree: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It certainly lived up to its reputation as a LONG book. The build is slow, mounting, and a bit difficult to wrap your head around at first (as is the case with any epic fantasy). But it truly paid off. Gorgeous character development, compelling story, and a tender resolution. There are ample examples of strong, lovingly crafted female characters and a delightful LGBTQ flourish. I devoured her novel in under a week and immediately googled, “Novels like the Priory of the Orange Tree.” For The Poppy War: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I went wild for the female empowerment present in the first installment of this fantasy trilogy. I was caught off guard and simultaneously enraptured by the first sentence. Side note: thank you for reminding fantasy readers that women still get their periods, regardless of the setting!! I loved her time at the academy, and could sense the budding threat of war in a way that felt more true to what the word actually means than what circumstances I normally find it thrown around in regarding these fantasy novels. There were some parts that lost me once the book took a turn away from everything that initially sucked me in (hence the four) and I SERIOUSLY advise looking up the TW/CW for this series before you start. It. Gets. Dark. But I simply cannot stand to leave a started series unfinished, so I’m on the hunt for the next book. Currently reading: Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon 🍊 A good thing about this book, other than dragons is that all the character POVs are interesting. If I had to pick a favourite it would be Ead, since I enjoy the court politics and her relationship with Sabran. Have you read Priory yet?
