The Wedding-A Misalliance with Love
“After his eyes traced her movement down the aisle on her father’s arm, Alton seemed distracted and preoccupied, his attention wandering rather than focusing on the promise they were meant to share. Even when the exchange of vows and rings approached, his mind seemed elsewhere.”

In "Perfidia," author James Ellroy writes a historical novel and the first volume of his second L.A. Quartet series, set in Los Angeles in 1941 that follows the story of several very different people who come together to investigate the murder of a Japanese family as America is at the brink of World War II. This discussion with the author took place on a 2014 episode of "Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster" originating in San Francisco, California. Photo: jamesellroy.net

Hire Lernin' (A Novel) - Chapter 1 (on Wattpad) https://www.wattpad.com/1218641945-hire-lernin%27-a-novel-chapter-1?utm_source=web&utm_medium=tumblr&utm_content=share_reading&wp_uname=VictorDLopez&wp_originator=GHQ1hW5M5NE737gKnUCN5cZKufT9%2F3z4IP7V2YA0KitbkFyu%2FVIofq6%2B2FQz4Up46%2BKdpz4hWo2rGzht%2FpbNs4sQ1prXzlV8GXHseE4WXLUq2cbNux2Wj9%2FohwIckXs6 This novel involves the bittersweet journey of a young, idealistic, naïve attorney who takes on the role of academic dean at a for-profit business school in New York City in the late 1980s knowing very little about the industry. Unable to accept the way things are, he immediately launches into a personal quest to change lives for the better in an environment where only the bottom-line matters. Hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit quickly propel him to professional success, but at a deep personal cost in the process as he learns critical life-altering lessons about himself, about leadership, about for-profit and not-for-profit higher education, and about love.

“Firefly Lane” by Kristin Hannah – A Book Summary
Tumblr media
Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah is a heartwarming and captivating novel that follows the lifelong friendship of two women, Tully and Kate, who first meet as teenagers on Firefly Lane. Despite their differences, they become inseparable and navigate the ups and downs of life together, from high school and college to career success and motherhood. But as they approach their 40s, their friendship is put to the ultimate test and they must confront the secrets and betrayals that have been building for years.
Kristin Hannah’s writing is both poignant and relatable, with vivid descriptions that transport readers back to the 1970s and 80s. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional, with flaws and strengths that make them feel like real people. Firefly Lane dives into the themes of friendship, love, loss, and forgiveness that are explored throughout the novel.

I’m just about to finish “The Winthrop Woman” by Anya Seton.  I’m listening to the audiobook on Scribd.  It was originally published in 1958.
It’s set in the turbulent political climate of the first half of the 1600s.  The story begins as the extended Winthrop family resides in England,  and later shifts to their immigration and day to day lives in the English and Dutch territories of the New World.
One thing I love about Anya Seton’s writing is all of the historical details.  Not necessarily historical accuracy, more like historical plausibility.
Her characters are always well rounded, with plenty of flaws.  Not all the women are beautiful nor the men handsome.
There is plenty of conflict in this particular story, with prosperity and hardship in equal measure.

The character of Nora encounters many types of obstacles. She views the problem and the possible solutions like she is playing a game of chess. It helps her survive, but she has to take a few hits to do it. Get yourself wrapped in the exchange. You might be safer moving your own piece forward, but your opponent might not. Beware! #ChessPlayer #Chessboard #ChessMaster #Strategist #TheGameOfRisk #TheGambler #CastleTheKing #HistoryOfWar #HistoricalDrama #HistoricalSociety #ProfessorOfHistory #CoffeeCurrentlyReading #ManOfWar #HistoricalNovel #TheGameOfThrones #WhiteWall #NightWatch #Bookstagram #BookTok #Amazon #SelfPublished #LocalAuthor #NewBritain https://www.instagram.com/p/CgqO-hVMkwn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"The End" such sweet words!
In the Hands of Women, my debut historical novel is born.
Can it be real? It feels impossible after so many months – has it been twenty already? So much crazy time has been spent writing, researching, revising, editing, soul-searching and binge eating Cheez-Its to get through this project! Three hundred sixty pages of historical fiction. It feels surreal, like giving birth – a whole book… so hard to fathom. What will I do without the intimate friends…

A writer’s corner: Big red flags
In the writer’s forum I belong to, a writer posed the question: What are huge red flags, no-nos, or just downright cringe-worthy things you have identified in books or manuscripts you’ve read? There were some great answers. The OP revealed that they dislike books with too many characters that remain undeveloped. I second that. Knowing the backstory of secondary characters and the motivations behind their action can bring the story to another level. Many writers admit that they dislike certain tropes, and for some, the biggest pet peeve was unrealistic dialogue that ‘explains’ too much: info-dumping. A detailed description of a character’s physical features that are baldly written was mentioned, or when characters are stereotypically perfect. My biggest pet peeve is setting up a character’s personality, history, and traits and then having them behave completely out of character in order to move the storyline along. E.g., the character is lauded for their intelligence, which surpasses all others, and they proceed to make one dumb decision after the next to move the story along. Or they are rational people who are suddenly, stupidly made incoherent by lust. Just.not. believable. Contrived activities that are not credible but are added in order to elicit a certain behavior from the character, also get my goat.
What is cringeworthy for you?
