According to Buried_UnderBooks, if you enjoyed Children of the Blood and Bone by @tomiadeyemi you will love The Gilded Ones and it's sequel The Merciless Ones @namina.forna! PS: Did you know there was an exclusive African version of the book? What does that mean? How do we get one, @penguinrandomhouse // @penguinteen ??? Reposted from @buried_underbooks Happy Saturday booklovers❤️ So, I was book shopping yesterday and when my eyes landed on The Gilded Ones, my soul literally left my body cause I've wanted to read this duology for so long... Ahhhh... 😲 The last time I was this hyped about a duology was when I read The Children of Blood and Bone duology back when it came out, and I absolutely loved it! But yeah, I am halfway the first book, and so far, I love every single thing, the writing, characters, the plot, perfection. I don't know if I'm saying this cause it really is this way or I'm just a fan girl of African Fantasy with teenage girls as the main characters but yeah, I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. Review coming in a couple of hours. So far it has been established that Deka is my Zelie, the candidates for Amari keep changing and there are two people up for Inan, Ionas and Recruit Keita. Am I pairing Children of Blood and Bone characters with The Gilded One's, yes... 🤓 Anyway, Happy Reading 🌹 Tags. #bookstagram #bookphotography #booklover #bookish #bookinstagram #bookstagramsouthafrica #bookedandbusy #thegildedones #childrenofbloodandbone #naminaforna #tomiadeyemi #WestAfricanYAFantasy #yafantasybooks #YAFantasy #SIstahScifi https://www.instagram.com/p/Cip6vHMpQCK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Food was how my mother expressed her love. No matter how critical or cruel she could seem—constantly pushing me to meet her intractable expectations—I could always feel her affection radiating from the lunches she packed and the meals she prepared for me just the way I liked them.” Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast’s touching memoir about losing her mom to stage IV Squamous cell carcinoma. Chronicling her at times volatile relationship with her mother, and how food connected them to their culture but also each other. I loved that though this book deals with loss and grief I didn’t find it to be over-wrought or depressing. Zauner’s beautiful writing has a lightness to it so that instead of being bogged down with emotion you can focus on the mother-daughter relationship at the heart. A hungry read. 🍱🥡🍚🍜🥟 “How cyclical and bittersweet for a child to retrace the image of their mother. For a subject to turn back to document their archivist.” . . . . . #bookstagram #booklovers #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramza #southafricanreaders #bookstagrammer #bookstagramsouthafrica #readersofinstagram #sareaders #literaryfiction #igreads #bookheaven #readerofinstagram #bookish #booksonbooksonbooks #belletristbabes #read #nextread #cryinginhmart #michellezauner #japanesebreakfast #picador #alfredaknopf #penguinrandomhouse #panmacmillan (at Durbanville) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfoBmwwr1-H/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The award for the weirdest book I've read this year goes to....The Bees! This book was as captivating as it was strange. And by strange I mean that ALL OF THE CHARACTERS WERE BEES. And bees do some weird things. It was wild. It was a good book, but a weird one. What's the weirdest book you've read? #bookstagram #bookish #bookworm #unitedbookstagram #reading #bibliophile #booklove #booklover #ilovereading #ilovebooks #SAreaders #bookblogger #booksofinstagram #bookstagramsouthafrica #bookstagramafrica #bookstagramza #booksbooksbooks #whatIread #igreads #bookphotography #thebees #bees #sunflowers #spring (at Cape Town, Western Province, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9hSNHagVFZ/?igshid=6omh2m61w5l4

👆🏽This is what Steve Biko, in "Black consciousness and the quest for true humanity", wrote. 👇🏽This is what Donald Yacovone, in "How textbooks taught white supremacy", wrote: "The main feature of white supremacy is the assumption that people with Anglo Saxon backgrounds are the primacy, the first order of humanity. Van Evrie, however, saw people of African descent as essential to do 'the white man’s work,' and were designed to do so 'by nature and god.' He wrote about six different books on the subject, and he used a racial hierarchy in which Caucasians were at the top and Africans at the bottom. You’d think that white supremacists were driven mostly by hate, but at the core they were driven by their ideas of racial superiority, which of course were pure fiction and had nothing to do with reality. White supremacy wasn’t developed to defend the institution of slavery, but in reaction to it, and it preceded the birth of the United States." Mogobe B. Ramose, in "The Struggle for Reason in Africa", makes the point: "Little did Aristotle realize that his definition of 'man' laid down the foundation for the struggle for reason - not only between men and women but also between the colonialists and the Africans, the Ameridians, and the Australasians." Most mornings I have a little person crawl out of their bed, cuddle up against me, and keep me company as I read. #areadblackgirl #aconsciousblackness #bookstagram #bookstagramsouthafrica #bookcommunity #bookpost #philosophy #history #whitesupremacy #subjugation https://www.instagram.com/p/CFbKhsED2XO/?igshid=1ixdonlccfzc6

Generally I just grab whatever is around to use as a bookmark, whether it be receipts, letters, scraps of paper, or even some lavender. 🎭 At the moment I'm using my ticket from The Play That Goes Wrong, which we saw in December. I could not remember a time I was not laughing while watching it! ✨ Less than 50% to read of 1984. The bigger story/picture is truly mind-blowing, but the story is getting a bit long. ✨ What is your go-to for keeping place in books? ✨ . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagramsouthafrica #booklover #booklife #reading #bookish #bookgram #bookphotgraphy #bookaddict #instabook #bookishescape #bookstagramza #1984 #georgeorwell #currentlyreading #bookmarks #theplaythatgoeswrong https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs0mSOuHKc1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=y8xx5kvn3k8z

“What is the word, Judith asks her mother, for someone who was a twin but is no longer a twin?” I go into (almost) every new book the same. Kind of reluctantly. Head still full of what I just read. Pretty sure the next one won’t live up. And I am proved wrong almost every time. “Hamnet” is a fictional account of Shakespeare's son, Hamnet, who died at age 11 in 1596. Maggie O’Farrell writes so evocatively. Her descriptions of grief are so raw and heartbreaking but never feel like they tip over into melodrama. The details of the time and area are so vivid you can smell the earth of a forest in the country, the stench of a 16th century London street. And this version of Agnes/Anne Hathaway is by far my favourite interpretation of a woman people can only guess at knowing. “He has, Agnes sees, done what any father would wish to do, to exchange his child’s suffering for his own, to take his place, to offer himself up in his child’s stead so that the boy might live. She will say all this to her husband, later, after the play has ended, after the final silence has fallen, after the dead have sprung up to take their places in the line of players at the edge of the stage.” . . . . . . . . #bookstagram #booklovers #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramza #southafricanreaders #bookstagrammer #bookstagramsouthafrica #readersofinstagram #sareaders #literaryfiction #igreads #bookheaven #readerofinstagram #bookish #booksonbooksonbooks #belletristbabes #read #nextread #hamnet #maggieofarrell #tinderpress (at Durbanville) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfT5V9ELdTZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“I put an arm around his shoulders, and together we sink onto the nearest sofa. I remember him sneaking me crackers and cheese whenever I did the special hand signal we’d devised, touching my pinkie to the tip of my nose. I remember him asking questions at parent-teacher evenings and writing down the answers diligently in his notebook, and I remember him sticking up for me when I was a hormonally deranged teenager, trying earnestly to understand my moods and triggers. He even bought a copy of How to Raise Girls and read it from cover to cover, underlining passages and dog-earring pages.” Dads. . . . . . #bookstagram #booklovers #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramza #southafricanreaders #bookstagrammer #bookstagramsouthafrica #readersofinstagram #sareaders #literaryfiction #igreads #bookheaven #readerofinstagram #bookish #booksonbooksonbooks #belletristbabes #read #nextread #newanimal #ellabaxter #twodollarradio #bookstooloudtoignore (at Weltevredenpark, Gauteng, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfBn3hYrxld/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Perhaps that is what it is like being with other people. Perhaps even people you like and admire immensely can make you see the World in ways you would rather not.” I love going into a book with very little idea of the plot. And “Piranesi” unfolds so slowly and mysteriously that I was half way through the book and still had very little idea what was going on. But the world-building by Susanna Clarke is impeccable. Just like with Erin Morgenstern’s books, I could effortlessly picture myself in the labyrinth described. Infinite rooms, endless corridors, walls lined with thousands of statues, each one different. An ocean lapping into the rooms, stars shining through windows. This tiny book felt epic in scope. Piranesi is the narrator and sole inhabitant of the House. He very much reminded me of Auri from Patrick Rothfuss’ The Slow Regard of Silent Things. Innocent, accepting, calm and composed, at times oblivious, and always kind. Thank you again to @annieandherchapters for kindly sending me this. It absolutely lived up to the hype and I’m excited to read more of Clarke’s work knowing this is the treat that awaits. . . . . . #bookstagram #booklovers #booksbooksbooks #bookstagramza #southafricanreaders #bookstagrammer #bookstagramsouthafrica #readersofinstagram #sareaders #literaryfiction #igreads #bookheaven #readerofinstagram #bookish #booksonbooksonbooks #belletristbabes #read #nextread #susannaclarke #piranesi #bloomsbury “The World feels Complete and Whole, and I, its Child, fit into it seamlessly. “Time stops when someone dies. Of course it stops for them, maybe, but for the mourners time runs amok. Death comes too soon. It forgets the tides, the days growing longer and shorter, the moon. It rips up the calendar. You aren't at your desk or on the subway or fixing dinner for the children. You're reading People in a surgery waiting room, or shivering outside on a balcony smoking all night long. You stare into space, sitting in your childhood bedroom with the globe on the desk. Persia, the Belgian Congo. The bad part is that when you return to your ordinary life all the routines, the marks of the day, seem like senseless lies. All is suspect, a trick to lull us, to rock us back into the placid relentlessness of time.” Thank you to @lovebooksjozi for giving me an excuse to chip away at the wishlist. . . . . . . . . . #southafricanbookstagrammer #sareaders #southafricanreaders #readerscommunity #bookstagramsouthafrica #newbookstagram #bookstaexplore #sabookstagrammers #literarylifestyle #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #sabookstagram #readersofinstagram #whatshouldiread #bookstagramza #bookstagram #loveofbooks #amanualforcleaningwomen #lucianerlin#natashabrown #assembly #purecolour #sheilayeti #mariagainza #portraitofanunknownlady (at Weltevredenpark, Gauteng, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CejJzByrI9G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“The best thing about dreams is that youth holds on to them.” Maybe the most famous of the femme fatales because, I mean, just LOOK at her, but Lauren Bacall is also a wonderful writer. This is one of my favourite books. Catapulted into stardom off of one (great) picture, but she WORKED to keep up with the fame and career handed to her. I absolutely love her. Full of anecdotes about her time growing up and living in New York, pretty brief as she was “discovered” at 19, to being Svengali’d essentially by Howard Hawks, a romance that captured people’s imagination till today with Humphrey Bogart, and all the many years and work and work and work after. She’s funny, frank, brave, resourceful, and smart. There will never be another like her. “From my own self-analysis, which I seldom indulge in, I am what I am.” . . . . . . . . 🏷 #southafricanbookstagrammer #sareaders #southafricanreaders #readerscommunity #bookstagramsouthafrica #newbookstagram #bookstaexplore #sabookstagrammers #literarylifestyle #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #sabookstagram #readersofinstagram #whatshouldiread #bookstagramza #bookstagram #loveofbooks #bookish #laurenbacall #bymyselfandthensome #headline #tohaveandhavenot #humphreybogart #howardhawks (at Weltevredenpark, Gauteng, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeGZaLeL3av/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“I'll tell you a secret. A lot of times, parents are not the best at seeing their children clearly.” Celeste Ng writes endlessly readable books. Definitely recommend for anybody in a reading slump who needs that little pick-me-up book to get them back in the habit. I haven’t watched the series yet. I’m not sure I will at this point, but I’m glad I read this before it came out or it might have been one of those books I never pick up because I’m vaguely put off by hype. Contrary. “In Pauline and Mal’s house, nothing was simple. In her parents’ house, things had been good or bad, right or wrong, useful or wasteful. There had been nothing in between. Here, she found, everything had nuance; everything had an unrevealed side or unexplored depths. Everything was worth looking at more closely.” . . . . . . . . . #southafricanbookstagrammer #sareaders #southafricanreaders #readerscommunity #bookstagramsouthafrica #newbookstagram #bookstaexplore #sabookstagrammers #literarylifestyle #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #sabookstagram #readersofinstagram #whatshouldiread #bookstagramza #bookstagram #loveofbooks #bookish #littlefireseverywhere #celesteng #abacus (at Weltevredenpark, Gauteng, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdvBVkprGYH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“‘You’re overthinking it.’ ‘I have anxiety. I have no other type of thinking available.’” As usual I’m late to the party on super popular, literally everybody has read it/wants to read it/has heard and talked about it to death books. But I can only read what I’m in the mood for when I’m in the mood for it. The premise of this Slide Doors/A Matter of Life and Death mash-up is absolutely magical. Between life and death Nora Seed visits The Midnight Library. Where the shelves are full of books of the lives she could have led had she made just one decision differently. A way of putting to bed all those many regrets we all have. I can absolutely understand why this book became so huge. It’s so cathartic to go on this journey with Nora to remind have a little reminder that, “You don’t have to understand life. You just have to live it.” . . . . . . . . . 🏷 #southafricanbookstagrammer #sareaders #southafricanreaders #readerscommunity #bookstagramsouthafrica #newbookstagram #bookstaexplore #sabookstagrammers #literarylifestyle #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #sabookstagram #readersofinstagram #whatshouldiread #bookstagramza #bookstagram #loveofbooks #bookish #themidnightlibrary #matthaig #canongate (at Weltevredenpark, Gauteng, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdk3S3ursRg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
