I can now refer to 2022 (among other names I dare not type) as The Year of The Greatest Reading Slump, but it was also the year I started rereading books and buddy reading ☺️ I finished 2022 with one of my most favorite authors, with a collection of short stories, the genre I love 💜, that has the most promising title -“Liberation Day”. Let 2023 be the year of liberation from fears, liberation of territories, liberation from any boundaries that don’t allow our creativity to flow. Happy New Year, world 🌍🎆 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #myyearinbooks #georgesaunders #liberationday #shortstorycollection #americanliterature #americanauthor #postmodernliterature (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm4T-AwrvoS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It might look like a book but it’s also my anxiety pill 😌 I wouldn’t have thought Seasonal Quartet needed another book (as it’s already perfect 😍) but here we are, and now you can’t imagine Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer without this book about an A or V that can ruin your life forever, about words and how you can own them, or how authors don’t really own a piece of writing completely, but mostly it is about togetherness even in times when you want to be alone 💜 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #alismith #companionpiece #seasonalquartet #britishliterature #britishauthor (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cme5SkqLBmQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There is a couple who come to the pond every evening with their furniture and set up a living room to fish from the couch; there is a girl who lives in the funeral parlor and whose hands are always cold; there is a man lost in time who lives in a shack out of packing crates; there is a boy who is unsure whether to buy a hamburger or a box of bullets and he makes a decision that kills a child and a childhood; there is an author who always breaks my heart 💔 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabooks #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #americanliterature #americanauthors #richardbrautigan #sothewindwontblowitallaway (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck608O9oQ0_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’ve read this book into what seems to be Indian summer, which I prefer over the real one (though the book made me softer, kinder to this season and I’m going to do my best to love summers more🙃). What is in the heart of the season according to the book? These: - affection you feel for a person you meet fleetingly but remember your single conversation years later🌼 - love for your sibling, which is always greater than you can show🌼 - feelings for your ex - nostalgic like the last days of summer 🌼 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #instabookstagrammer #whattoread #whattoreadnext #alismith #scottishauthor #summer #seasonalquartet (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjGnxYoLPGv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today is Stanisław Lem’s birthday and this book caught in a perfect golden hour light is my favourite one by the author, and it is a hard-core satire (another favourite genre of mine🙃) Sooo…in the best tradition of Lovecraft you start reading a diary found in a government building, the only document left from the past (because paper has decomposed, been destroyed by a virus), of a person sent to that building to work. Then, in the best tradition of Kafka, you read about this person’s journey from room to room, along the endless corridors of the building, on a mission he doesn’t understand because he can’t get the instructions since nobody in the government building trusts anybody 👀 Lem said the book is "combination of grim weirdness with humor", just the kind of story I could read on any given day 🙃 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #instabookstagrammer #whattoread #whattoreadnext #polishliterature #polishauthor #stanislawlem #memoirsfoundinabathtub #satire #dystopia (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiYYvm5L0P5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

How to rewild yourself but stay human (humane?) in the process? It’s so easy to feel anger and frustration looking at the harm humans do to the environment that you cannot but relate to the heroine of the book, who is trying to reintroduce wolves into the unwelcoming Highlands. But then…“all creatures know love…”, can’t the locals change their ways and accept the wolves and the wolf girl? 🐺🐺🐺 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #australianliterature #australianauthor #charlottemcconaghy #oncetherewerewolves #mystery #thriller #booksaboutnature #rewilding (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch7-aMgLj9D/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A beautifully claustrophobic love letter to a wife, the sea, the unknown 👾 There are so many readers who will love it: • those who are into books about people coming back from other places changed • those who love “The Metamorphosis” (which I, personally, dislike but love all the books inspired by that monster) • those who are into Cthulhu because don’t we all think about Cthulhu while reading about underwater adventures 🤔(why isn’t there the emoji of it yet??? 🥲) • those who got that tingling sensation while reading about confined spaces • those who love books about love (which makes all of us 💙) #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #metamorphosis #britishliterature #britishauthor #juliaarmfield #ourwivesunderthesea #horror #thriller (at Pirita beach, Tallin Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgtLrCRo9Wb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reading Southern Gothic in summer sounds like a perfect choice 🥵 If you’ve already read (and loved 🥰) “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Little Friend”, why not read another book about a girl growing in a sleepy Southern American town? A story of a twelve-year-old Frankie and a dreadful summer during which she is not a member of any club and her heart is aching with a desire to belong, to discover the world outside the sleepy town. It’s fascinating how Carson McCullers made a book that tiny seem thrice its size, weaving so much in between the lines and leaving the reader to discover a lot on their own at the same time. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #southerngothic #comingofage #americanliterature #americanauthors #carsonmccullers #thememberofthewedding (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgXld5-rk7k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This is a year of slow reading, of reading a lot of female authors and rereading favourite writers 😻(very thankful to @liamoleary._ for our buddy reading🙏) When starting “Deadeye Dick”, I discovered that I’d given it ⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads 🫣😨(I don’t know…it was long ago, I was probably…drunk?) When finishing the story about a man who accidentally makes a huge mistake in his childhood that has an influence on his life and, to some extent, the lives of other people in one sleepy American town, I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Because if you read a book by Vonnegut and don’t find yourself changed, maybe it’s the wrong timing. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabooks #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #reread #americanliterature #americanauthors #americanwriter #kurtvonnegut #deadeyedick (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf1cnbWrlBs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The oldest story ever told that will forever captivate us: a child of surprise with a mystical power arrives to “unfuck“ the world. It never works but the story is mostly about hope, so you can’t complain. The first book of “Dune” is mind-blowing, action-packed and encouraging (don’t tell me you don’t use litany against fear after reading “Dune” 💆‍♀️ because I won’t believe you). “Dune Messiah” is about how hard it is to try to live up to people’s expectations, and it is also heart-wrenching 😭 I heard there is a gradual decline in Frank Herbert’s storytelling but I’m already a member of this cult, so I’ll keep reading 🙃 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #americanliterature #americanauthor #sciencefictionbooks #mustread #frankherbert #dune #dunemessiah #dunesaga #spaceopera (at Pirita beach, Tallin Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfPXUBhLaIF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I don’t know how Ali Smith does it, but she is able to show the very essence of a season through words. “Spring” is an overwhelming wind of the equinox promising change. It cannot contain itself, it wants to mould and break and, miraculously, it gives you hope. There is a girl in this book that can do magic and she also writes down things in her journal, which are priceless. Like this one, written on behalf of Spring: “Mess up my climate, I’ll fuck with your lives. Your lives are a nothing to me. I’ll yank daffodils out of the ground in December. I’ll block up your front door in April with snow and blow down that tree so it cracks your roof open. I’ll carpet your house with the river. But I’ll be the reason your own sap’s reviving. I’ll mainline the light to your veins.”🌱💚 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #alismith #scottishauthor #spring #seasonalquartet (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdWlq2nr7ol/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ah, the sophisticated pleasure of reading a Persephone book 🥰 I feel like a high-born lady while reading a book by this publisher. Also, I trust their choice 100% 😉 “Someone at a Distance” by Dorothy Whipple is a book about an affair, a femme fatale taking away a devoted father and husband. Honestly, I’m so not interested to read about affairs 😒(probably the reason why I haven’t read “Anna Karenina”or “Madame Bovary” yet) But! This book is so good at not doing what you expect it to do and the characters are so impeccably depicted (this book should be used to teach character development in creative writing courses 🧐) I’m going to recommend it to everyone 👍🏻 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabooks #whattoread #whattoreadnext #persephonebooks #instabookstagram #someoneatadistance #dorothywhipple #classicliterature #britishliterature #britishauthor #modernclassic #historicalfiction (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdLdh6zoaBs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A world almost devoid of animals and a woman following the last Arctic terns on their longest migration. To see if they make it or become yet another extinct species. To end her own life either way. If you’ve never lived a book, this one might get you the idea. Wherever you are, you’ll feel the numbing cold of the ocean, the crash of its waves and the kind of freedom only birds can possess. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #whattoread #whattoreadnext #migrations #thelastmigration #charlottemcconaghy #australianauthor #australianliterature #dystopia #environmentalliterature (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcTlvy-LTKW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If “every love story is a ghost story”, this is an ideal one. A body artist’s husband commits a suicide and she stays in the house where they were happy to grieve. One day she finds a man/child (there’s actually no definite description of him, which makes him a perfect ghost) in the upstairs bedroom, who doesn’t know anything about himself and can’t use words properly but does know and can repeat all her conversations with her dead husband (in his voice too!). This is a thin novella but it depicts the mental and physical aspects of grieving like no other. Also☝️, the dialogue between the body artist and her husband the morning before the suicide is brilliantly staged and a masterpiece in itself 💙 #bookstagram #instabooks #instabookstagram #bookstagrammer #whattoread #whattoreadnext #americanliterature #americanauthor #dondelillo #thebodyartist #novella #ghoststory #lovestory #postmodernliterature (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbW6xqMAPSB/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today is Richard Brautigan’s birthday, the author whose writing feels so intimate that when you read his books, his poems you can’t help but feel that those are not just words and ideas put on paper in a beautiful word arrangement but part of self one doesn’t give away to strangers. Well, he did. “An Unfortunate Woman” is his last novel published posthumously. It’s a travel journal/notes on friends, dead and dying. It’s very personal and sad and as good as any other book written by him 💜. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #richardbrautigan #anunfortunatewoman #americanliterature #americanauthors #poetry (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZWLSMBgepS/?utm_medium=tumblr
