I can now refer to 2022 (among other names I dare not type) as The Year of The Greatest Reading Slump, but it was also the year I started rereading books and buddy reading ☺️ I finished 2022 with one of my most favorite authors, with a collection of short stories, the genre I love 💜, that has the most promising title -“Liberation Day”. Let 2023 be the year of liberation from fears, liberation of territories, liberation from any boundaries that don’t allow our creativity to flow. Happy New Year, world 🌍🎆 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #myyearinbooks #georgesaunders #liberationday #shortstorycollection #americanliterature #americanauthor #postmodernliterature (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm4T-AwrvoS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I usually don't do the whole New Years Resolution thing, but this years it's different. Dr. Jordan Peterson has a "top 100" list of recommended literature, and I am going to go through them one by one, to see how many I can complete. I am including film adaptations and listening on Audible. So many of these I remember reading decades ago as required reading for high school or my college literature classes, but most will be first time reads for me. The last 2 days I read A Farewell to Arms (Ernest Hemingway). I still want to see both versions of the movie, one made in the 1932 with Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper, and another made in 1957 with Jennifer Jones and Rock Hudson, the latter being more fluff of the two, according to critics. The ending of the book slayed me. But it is great fun to read sad books and day drink. Here is a sampling. The rest can be found on his website.

In "Perfidia," author James Ellroy writes a historical novel and the first volume of his second L.A. Quartet series, set in Los Angeles in 1941 that follows the story of several very different people who come together to investigate the murder of a Japanese family as America is at the brink of World War II. This discussion with the author took place on a 2014 episode of "Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster" originating in San Francisco, California. Photo: jamesellroy.net

For #BlackHistoryMonth & for the love of #books:📚💕 --- In college, in my "Norton Anthology of African-American Literature," I enjoyed a beautiful mosaic of many African-American writers' works, poems, essays, letters, or excerpts of works. I loved so many of the Spirituals (Christian, African-American hymns), Phillis Wheatley's poetry, Sojourner Truth's courageous story & speeches (especially "Ain't I a Woman?"), Frederick Douglas' fearlessness and fortitude in his memoir, Booker T. Washington's "Out of Slavery," W. E. B. DuBois' "The Souls of Black Folks," Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful, eloquent writings, & many of Langston Hughes' poems. I enjoyed Harriet Jacobs' story of resilience while escaping slavery in her memoir, Alice Dunbar Nelson's poetry, & Jean Toomer's "Cane." I, also, read works by Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, & many others. One of my most favorite Langston Hughes' poems is "Mother to Son." I definitely recommend this book; it covers a multitude of African-American writers from Pre-1700s through the Modern era (20th century). (My #bookreview & photo: #Inknscroll)📖 --- (In college, I read most of these two anthologies. Here are the above books' complete titles: "Norton Anthology of African-American Literature," by Henry Louis Gates Jr. & Nellie Y. McKay (Editors) & "Literature of the Western World, Vol 2: Neoclassicism Through the Modern Period," by Brian Wilkie & James Hurt (Editors).) #books #AfricanAmericanLiterature #WesternLiterature #Inknscrollbookreview #authors #writers #poets #literature #bookstagram #American #history #WesternHistory #classics #America #photography #writersofinstagram #AmericanLiterature #nonfiction #biography #memoirs #poetry #goodreads #AfricanAmericanHistoryMonth 📚💕 https://www.instagram.com/p/CpI-YfgPw5o/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There is a couple who come to the pond every evening with their furniture and set up a living room to fish from the couch; there is a girl who lives in the funeral parlor and whose hands are always cold; there is a man lost in time who lives in a shack out of packing crates; there is a boy who is unsure whether to buy a hamburger or a box of bullets and he makes a decision that kills a child and a childhood; there is an author who always breaks my heart 💔 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabooks #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #americanliterature #americanauthors #richardbrautigan #sothewindwontblowitallaway (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck608O9oQ0_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

For the first time ever as Norton Critical Editions we have William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! and Mary Shelley’s The Last Man!
If you’ve been bingeing Succession or The Last of Us and are looking for a novel to fill the time between episodes and seasons, with these titles you can dive completely into a Southern tale about the rise and fall of a cruel patriarch or an extremely prescient dystopian plague story about the collapse of society in the twenty-first century. You can find these (and more!) at wwnorton.com/nortoncriticals!
