Happy Polin Day!! 💛 I accidentally wrote an essay about the lighting in this two second clip. I guess I found my Roman Empire.

Nicola said in an interview that the theme of the first season was passion, the second was longing, and the third is romance, and I fully agree and believe her because everything about this clip SCREAMS romance.

As perfect as they are, I have to put aside costume, hair, and makeup, and just praise the lighting right now bc it really deserves to be discussed.

Anyone who has ever read a romance novel knows that when the leading man looks at the leading lady ~lustily~, his expression darkens and he has a devilish glint in his eye, while she has a soft, open expression and stars in her eyes. That is EXACTLY what they achieved by angling a single soft fill light on Luke from below, while having him kinda backlit/ side lit by the key light (the moonlight), and angling that harder accent light on Nicola from above and back, while having the full key light on her from the front.

In classic horror cinematography, characters are lit from below because it casts sinister shadows on their faces. Hell scenes often have characters lit by fire from below (because obviously). This kind of lighting is also great for portraying lust (see Kanthony in the library, season 2 ep 4, both scenes). Lustiness and the devil go hand in hand (because religion lol), and that’s why this slightly sinister lighting looks so good here.

Colin is every bit the romantic hero, and the way the lighting portrays that is subtle, but intentional. His eyes are shadowed and he has that glint. No doubt he’s about to do something bold and scandalous. Just the way Colin is approaching Pen pretty clearly indicates his intentions, but I really like that you can also derive those intentions from the lighting because it evokes such freakin classic romantic imagery.

And in the same perfectly subtle way, she is also classically lit, but representing the other side of the coin. As he’s lit from hell, she’s lit from heaven. The yellow (😉) light on her has an angelic effect. It’s also a soft spotlight, like how they would light Old Hollywood starlets.

When you combine that light with the key light (the moonlight) that fills her face and makes her eyes sparkle, you really see her, and she is meant to be worshipped. That’s what Colin is seeing. And, obviously, being seen terrifies our wallflower. Which just adds another layer to the significance of Colin’s lighting because not only does the lighting tell us what’s he’s about to do (😘), it also makes sense to have him in the devilish lighting because she’s scared. But it’s the good kind of scary of course.

And what’s so god damn beautiful about the whole thing, is that the opposition that I’m seeing between the lighting of Colin and Pen in this moment exists so harmoniously with the equivalence that I also see between the characters. The feeling of connection between them is stronger than it’s ever been. And I’m guessing she’s literally on some kind of platform, like a doorstep or something, because their lines of sight are more level with each other. So the contrast between Colin and Pen itself contrasts with the closeness between them.

I just love how wonderfully complex that is. I am so impressed.

And that’s just the lighting y’all.

Curiosity got the better of me, so forgive me for tainting Roy’s HolyName, but what’s your take on the interview quote? The whole “taking my son to punishland” deal?

I don’t really believe in the whole media theory and don’t think Roy is necessarily the bad guy, but that quote kinda makes me wonder what his motives are (if any, maybe he was just being ominous for the lols)

You’re like the only person in the whole community which I can discuss things related to Roy without someone pulling the whole “dad bad” scandal so sorry if I tend to flood the chat lmao

In fact, perhaps this is not suitable for reading at all. I’ve spent a good while at it, and I’m no longer able to tell.

Hah! Me, your one-stop station for all things Roy Gribbleston is a good dad. 

It’s funny, you know. I’m the only person like that in the community and I barely feel like I even belong in this community. Or at least I’ve been made to feel like I shouldn’t be here. By your own words, I’m certain you know what I might mean by that. Such is life. 

And don’t even get me started on that sort of people. I’ve dealt with plenty enough. I don’t want to anymore. 

But I love DHMIS, and I love Roy, and I refuse to leave. 

I do apologize if at any point during this I sound... off... I’m just... so tired.

My take on the interview as a whole is that it’s an additional (and frankly non-canon) series of some of the most abstract and nonsensical quotes I’ve ever read, and I’m a surrealist by nature. And really, how often do you see people taking anything BUT that one quote from it at face value (or even mention it at all)? It almost feels like cherry-picking whatever suits the theories. Because otherwise it’s nonsense. Hmm. 

HMM. 

But fine, okay, the quote. It means nothing to me. I’ve seen people claim it refers to the events of the show... well, I don’t know how other people do it, but when I talk about something that has happened or is actively happening, I don’t refer to it in future tense. And Roy’s an eloquent man. I’m sure he knows basic grammatical functions. My point is, if he is referring to something for real? You wouldn’t know! So what’s the point in assuming the worst? 

I know some people love to blame Roy for everything evil in the world (huergh.) but then turn around and excuse any questionable actions of their own faves. (I get you! I just happen to be an unmovable object stationed on Roy’s side.) Actions that were literally done on screen that you can see with your eyes. Unlike with Roy, who’s just standing there. Oh so evilly! 😂 

No, see, the teachers are terrible because ROY made them like that (or they’re completely innocent or something, I don’t even know anymore). No, see, Red and Duck Guy would make such better caretakers for Yellow who never did anything bad to him and what do you mean have I watched DHMIS 3 (I don’t believe in any of that “pilot” stuff but if I did, it only gets worse there lol and yes, some people try to blame THAT on Roy as well. I ain’t here for that. HE’S NOT EVEN IN IT!)? 

Hell, if you want to believe in the interview as true, Yellow says he’s allergic to and scared of eggs (along with a myriad of other things included in the episodes, which just makes me believe it less, to be honest. It’s all just random rambling and references.) Take of that what you will. 

And I feel the need to reiterate that I neither hate nor have anything against Red and Duck Guy. Or even the teachers. Not at all! I’m also not saying Roy’s an angel (he is to me 💛). I’m saying nobody is one. Except Yellow. Yellow is pure and innocent and needs to be protected at all cost. Which is why Roy is there. But acting like Roy is the pinnacle of all evil is awfully silly at best. My point is that if you’re gonna hold Roy accountable for something, hold everyone else accountable as well.

Personally, I don’t believe in any of the theories. Don’t care much for them. I don’t need to know the true, real, deepest lore meaning of DHMIS. I found my own value in it, and I found my own meaning. It has nothing to do with the show itself, but it makes me feel good, and that’s all that matters, really. 

Also, it's absolutely in character for Roy to act ominously purely to mess with people. I... I’d know.

Hi Gina! I know it's old news and kind of debunked, but I have been catching up from the past week, and idk about that yellow sweatshirt! I think it could very well be the same. I was def skeptical at first. But it looks like the sleeves are the same as H's, he' just cuffed them backwards whereas Lou has them unrolled as sweaterpaws. And L is wearing the hem loose on the bottom, while it looks like H has the hem tucked under the sweatshirt. Idk... I'm actually kind of sold on this one! Doesn't matter either way, but I'm not tossing this one out yet!

Also, it's so lovely to hear any of the 1D guys give an interview with thoughtful questions about music. I don't ever read tabloids, so I'm enjoying all of this promo so far, before the other shoe inevitably drops 💛

Currently watching: I just finished watching the Gilded Age with my family, and now I've started watching Euphoria while drawing. It's not my usual taste, but the first season has been entertaining so far (we'll see about season two)

For sims: I'm continuing my Decades Challenge on here. Playwise I'm in the 1950s right now, which has been rather fun! I'm looking forward to getting my posts into the 20s because a lot of my favorite characters appear then. However, I will say there will be some rather tragic parts :0

Outside of game: I'm finishing my novella hopefully by the end of this month. It's a historical magic realism work that I'm hoping to find a publisher for. Other than that, I am also working on my first video game with my friend. It'll be a 2D visual novel that'll also be sort of historical (though it takes place in an afterlife lol)

Or, a coming of age American AU inspired by classic 80s movies like The Goonies and Stand By Me where everyone has a secret and no one wants to get caught.

Harry is not dying.

Well, he is, but in the same sense that everyone else is. Inevitably. Although, he’s not really living, either. Harry’s life is a routine. Every day he wakes up, eats the same breakfast, makes the same commute to work, works the same eight-hour shift, and goes to bed at the same time. But when an accident on a train leaves Harry nearly looking death in the eyes, he realizes, theoretically, any day could be his last. Something needs to change. So he makes a list.

The Fuck-It List: ten things he wishes he would’ve done if he were to die tomorrow. In the next ten days, he wants to cross all of them off. Number one is to quit his job. The rest might require the help of the stranger who almost accidentally killed him.

Or, Harry wants to remember what it’s like to feel alive again, and Louis has just the adventurous spirit he’s looking for.

1. This gifset of the dance scene in i’m thinking of ending things. Honestly one of the nicest colourings I’ve ever done. I really love that scene and I managed to up the vibrancy on the red hair without the skin tones going wack. 2. This rainbow set of Mrs Coulter. Also a great labour of love (seriously finding that a gif to do red took so long). Not much more to say, I just think the colours are nice.

3. It’s a tie between what I shall call my ‘ruth being chaotic in interviews’ series. This one of her trying to say alethiometre, this one of general interview chaos™, and ofc brian fisher appreciation. The tags on all those sets were really wholesome and now I’ve seen more Ruth Wilson interviews than any one person reasonably should.

4. This one of Marisa and the spectres. Probably doesn’t seem that remarkable, but it was the first time I started playing around with sharpening and using a 2160p download. I really don’t know what I did, but it has a much more grainy look than my normal gifs, which was fun, and it can be hard to make big gifs look decent, so that was cool. Also that scenes really hot so

5. It’s got to be s01e04 of my hdm rewatch. This was my first series playing with colours a ton and I think this was my best one out of that set.

Some honorable mentions

Colouring I’m proud of: hdm rewatch s01e05 (I literally coloured every frame of the purple gif individually ahhh), mrs wilson (there was a lot of yellow to neutralise), hester and lyra + pan from the hdmsourcefanweek (really wish I could remember how to do this kind of colouring rip), mlm/wlw solidarity crack (again complete fluke, but it looks nice)
