So I decided to rewatch Trollhunters again for the 6th or 7th time, but this time in Spanish (Latin American) version because it's kind of my first-ish, second-ish language. I have to say is that some of the voices fits well with most characters, but there are some that uhhhh... oofers.
Anyways I finished season 1 and when I watched season 2, I nearly fell off my bed when hearing Dictatious in the LATAM version. It was like 6 am lol.
Like at first I didn't like it all that much when hearing it the first time. The more I hear it, the more I kind of like it and now it's growing on me...
Here's some I clips I have for an example.

Top 10 reasons to hate Zoro x Nami:
• Although Zoro still distrusted Nami at first, he never did so with her seafaring skills.
Lost -> Navigator
Tumblr media
• Zoro has always saved Nami all the time, and will continue to do so. His thoughts about her softened as they related, transforming their love-hate relationship
Tumblr media
• Zoro has always been (and always will be) the first person to notice something wrong with Nami, as he did in Arlong Park or Zou
Tumblr media
• Although Sanji was the most in danger in Thriller Bark, Zoro continued to worry about Nami
Tumblr media
• Zoro and Nami have shown concern for Momo in Wano, giving a certain parental atmosphere
Tumblr media
• Although Zoro does not like anyone touching his swords, they are entrusted almost exclusively to Nami. Example is this official illustration
Tumblr media
• Although Zoro doesn't like physical contact, he doesn't mind being touched by Nami in color spread 771, or that he seeks physical contact
Tumblr media
• Nami thinks Zoro is the toughest person of the crew, and she knows that he is worth more than 2000 men
Tumblr media
• Both go shopping in color spread 824
Tumblr media
• Both do laundry in color spread 745
Tumblr media
Leaving aside the initial joke, those who hate this ship probably only like to look at the aesthetic side, that's why many other ships are more popular than Zonami :^

As your hands started to shake you placed the box inside the closet where you picked it from and shut it immediately. You stood against the door of the closet to collect your breaths. That was an engagement ring, there was no mistaking it. Was he planning to give it to someone? It's been two years. Two years. It was enough time to move on.
Were things serious between him and that reporter? Perhaps he was undermining the relationship in front of you because he didn't want to hurt you in this state?
You quickly changed into the shirt and a pair of trouser before you stepped outside to go into the kitchen. He gave you a smile as he looked at you so you returned it even though deep down you felt sick--
“Your tea is prepared as per your liking ma'am” he said to you so you gave him another smile
“You remember how I like it?”
“How could i forget”
You wanted to ask about the ring but that seemed desperate at this point, you broke up with him, you left him and you had no right to interfere if he was choosing to move on in his life and find happiness again. Perhaps with someone who would understand the complexities of his job better than you did.
You tried to shake off these thoughts, telling yourself that it didn't matter who he was moving on with. You knew he deserved love, he deserved every good thing in his life.
But every part of you regretted splitting up with him.
“Let's sit down and talk okay?’ he said to you so you chuckled.
“I have a therapist for that”
“I don't want to be your therapist, i want to be a friend –”
“I have friends” you said to him so he nodded and walked towards you to give you the cup of tea, you grabbed it with one hand and as he walked past you you grabbed his arm.
“I'm sorry..I'm just…i..”
“Shhhh it's okay..it's okay sweetheart..you're okay” he cooed gently which made your eyes fill with tears again. Why did he have to be so gentle with you? You broke his heart, left him behind to find someone you thought you deserved so why wasn't he showing even a miniscule amount of anger and frustration?
“Am i? Will I ever be okay again?”
“You will..you will..you're a strong strong woman, I know you.. and you have me by your side..i know i wasn't there when you--” he hesitated to finish his words as the memories of the past flooded in his mind “but I'm here now”
He made you sit down on the couch and he sat next to you, though maintaining a proper amount of distance to not trigger you or make you uncomfortable.
“Are you sure you don't have to be at work?” you asked him so he chuckled.
“I brought my work here..see” he pointed towards the stacks of paperwork on the desk he had in the living room so you gave him a smile
“How's Rebecca?”
“She's fine..”
“Ummm how did you I mean.. how did you find that place? It was in the middle of nowhere” your question made him squirm in his place. He really wished he had found you on his own but he really didn't. He only found you because he was told the location.
“I didn't find it..i thought I had him but i received an anonymous mail with the exact location printed on it” your eyes flickered as he said that.
“Who do you think sent it?”
“I have no clue..for once I'm…just lost” his voice sounded defeated so you placed your hand on his.
“You'll figure it out…you always do”
He gave you a sweet smile as you said that.
“You saw the woman right?” you asked him, you really wanted to talk about the woman and even though he was the one to take your official statement he hadn't gotten the chance to talk about your experience in person like this.
“I did”
“How did she look? I never saw her in light, I just heard her voice”
“She seemed off”
You looked at him confused as he said that. Of course she seemed off, she was a psychopath but you knew that's not what he meant.
“What do you mean?”
“When she fled..i went around the house ..only one footprint left the house..not two..just one.. and that wasn't a woman's size..she was tall but those boot prints were of a man's shoes and there was only one print..”
The realisation hit you like a ton of brick as he said that.
“Oh godd– there was no woman there.. Rebecca was right” He nodded in agreement as you spoke
“You know..he had the same eyes as you..when he looked at me..he was...his voice was different and he felt different but his eyes..”
“People have hazel eyes darling –”
“I know it's just..I'm sorry I didn't mean to –"
“Stop apologizing to me, okay?” He mumbled softly so you nodded in response “Do you want to sleep?” He asked you so you gave him another nod.
“Take the bedroom..I'll sleep in the guest room”
“No I'll go there…it's your room.. i don't wanna--”
“It used to be yours tooo ..just sleep there..I don't mind” you looked down as he reminded you of the nights you had spent in that bed, curled around each other's bodies.
You also felt that he was flirting, that's how he flirted, he wasn't really overly flirtatious even at the beginning of your dating period, this was his way of flirting. He was physical in his affection, words were never really his strong suit.
“But your girlfriend will mind.…ummm I don't want to cause problems -”
Was that your way of confirming whether he was seeing someone? He wondered
“Don't worry, there'd be no problems from anyone”
He didn't deny having a girlfriend, you thought.
And he was sleeping with Mary and he told you that it was just sexual, if he was committed to someone else he'd never cheat or maybe he changed, people change.
He wished you a good night of sleep as you got into the bed, before leaving he placed a bottle of water and some snacks for you on the side table in case you'd get hungry at night. He remembered your silly habits and that made you feel all warm and gooey again, for a moment you forgot what you had been through.
Just a moment though, as soon as your eyes drifted into the deep sleep you had a nightmare about being back into the basement. All alone.
You woke up with sweats and shuddering breaths, body shaking with fear as you made your way to the guest room. You wanted to knock but you stood there for a minute contemplating if you still had the right to disturb his sleep like that.
After what felt like an eternity you twisted the knob and entered the room. In the dim light you could barely figure out his silhouette in the bed, he seemed asleep, he didn't really snore, in fact he didn't make any noise at all whenever he was deep in sleep but you could always tell when he was asleep. You walked towards the bed and grabbed the duvet to slip inside as quietly as you could. He was on the left side so you tried to stay on the right, your back was turned to him, perhaps you'd sneak out first thing in the morning.
Or that's what you had thought. Your plan didn't work because he shifted in his sleep and as he saw you next to him he lifted his head up and rubbed his eyes to double check if you were actually there or it was just wishful thinking.
You could feel his eyes on you so you turned around to address the awkwardness of the situation.
“Sorry..I'll go if you want me to”
He kept his eyes on you as you said that and brought his hand forward to wrap it around your waist, you gasped as he pulled you closer to him, being huddled into his warmth immediately relaxed the tide of emotions that were bothering you.
“Nightmare?” He asked you as he tucked your hair behind your ears.
Your beautiful beautiful hair that got you in such deep trouble.
“Yeah..i don't want to be alone –” your lips trembled as you spoke so he laid back down and pulled you closer to him,
“You're not alone..I'm here”
“Thank you”
He caressed your back and the rhythm of his chest moving up and down slowly calmed your wrecked nerves. He then wrapped the duvet around you both, submerging you into that safe warm cocoon that you never wanted to get out of.
Your finger clutched around the fabric of his shirt and it took everything in him to not turn you over and kiss you like he used to.
“Thank you Daemon”
“Shhhh ..it's okay I have told you”
“No…for saving me..for bringing me back”
“I had to..I had to..i needed to”
You were sitting on the couch of the man you had been on four dates with so far, Officer Daemon. Sexy, nerdy and slightly awkward officer Daemon. After the night at the movies he had invited you into his home for coffee. Coffee, not wine or something alcoholic that would make you lose your inhibitions but coffee.
You couldn't help but stare at him in his leather jacket and loose t-shirt fitting him perfectly. He was running his fingers through his hair, pushing away those gorgeous locks that seemed to frame his face so well.
“You know you are pretty right??” You mumbled like a fool and his face flushed in response, he shrugged his shoulders before he gave you a smile. The smile, you liked that smile a lot, he looked like a Cheshire cat at times, he always seemed as if he was planning something in his head. But you liked that a lot, you enjoyed that he was a bit mysterious.
“Dont mind this foolish bloke's words but I'm worried about your eyesight darling”
You put the cup of coffee down on the table before you scooted closer to him and straddled him but not in a way that would give him all the right ideas.
“And I'm worried about yours”
“I'm not pretty, shhhh..you like messing with me don't you?”
He asked you in a playful manner, however his eyes were looking anywhere but you so you cupped his cheeks,
“I'm not messing with you I promise” you gave him a smile so he shook his head.
“What is uhhh what is so pretty about me?”
He asked you so you bit on your lip to think of an answer that would be honest and won't make him feel as if you were playing with him. Has he never been told how gorgeous he was? What a shame you thought.
“Well for starters..these captivating hazel eyes..they look at me as if I'm the only girl in the world..” his eyes teared up as you spoke so tenderly with him. He wasn't used to this, he wasn't used to people saying good things about his appearance.
“And these soft lips that make me wanna kiss you all the time” his breath hitched in his chest as your thumb brushed over his lips.
You're the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen in my life..I hate you..I hate you so much, no amount of dressing up is going to fix that ugly mug..
His mother's voice screamed at him but as you kissed him all those voices shut down inside his head. For once in his life he genuinely felt appreciated for how he looked. And he felt cared for who he was.
“I am not pretty..i have a weird face.. I have been..told that” he mumbled meekly and your eyebrows scrunched in response. Your heart skipped several beats at once as you looked at the vulnerable man in front of you. He seemed so rugged when he was working, he had such a no nonsense attitude, you never could have sensed him to have such insecurities. You traced your fingertips along his jaw, hand brushing against the light stubble.
“You're perfect..so perfect” you kissed him again and his arms wrapped around your waist as he pulled you into him.
“So are you..you look like that and you're nice..so nice and sweet and so soft..that's a beautiful thing”
Your face became warm as he said that. You have been complimented over your looks before, especially from the men you dated but it had never felt so special before, most of the time men said things because they wanted to get you in their beds.
“Mmmm I like you so much officer Daemon” he chuckled as you said that.
Four dates ..it's been just four dates ..was it too soon to tell you that he was obsessed with you? That he was falling in love with you?
In the morning when he woke up you weren't there and that made him jump out of the bed and sprint out of his bedroom to see where you had gone. He came to a halt as he found you in the kitchen making breakfast, it felt like the old times when you used to do things like that for each other.
“Hey.. morning ..i made breakfast..ummm and i ironed your shirt, you still despise ironing right?” You asked him so he gave you a smile.
“Did you not sleep well?”
“I ..did..I just…keep having flashes” he noticed that your hands were shaking as you poured the tea in the cup so he walked towards you and placed his hand on yours.
“When are you seeing Doctor Smith again?”
He asked you so you looked at him.
“Tomorrow..i have a session tomorrow”
“Okay..I'm here alright? I know it's not easy but you don't have to be afraid anymore”
Your eyes teared up but as you looked at him his bed head and sleep marks on his face made you smile.
“Okay..ummm ..you have to be at work right?”
“Yes but I'm taking you to Donna's, I'll pick you up when I get off”
“Daemon you don't have to–”
“I do..i wasn't here when you –” his eyes welled up as he thought of the reasons, several reasons, that had made him drift away from you so much that you chose to leave him rather than be with him “I have not been there for you..plenty of times when I should have been there for you ..so just let me be here for you now”
He mumbled sharply so you nodded.
While he was in the bathroom you opened his closet and your eyes looked for the box again but it was gone ..it wasn't there anymore. Did he hide it?
Why did he hide it?
After dropping you at Donna's he went to the station and Jake informed him that commissioner Otto wanted to see him regarding the development in the case. That immediately made him nervous, he really wanted to catch the killer, put him behind the bars and make him rot in hell for what he had done to you and those other innocent women but it's been three weeks and he had no lead regarding the whereabouts of the killer.
It was as if he had vanished into the thin air.
There were plenty of things he didn't understand about the maniac. Why did he dress up as a woman? Why did he bump into him on purpose? Who gave him the anonymous tip? There were several questions but no answer, for once his instincts were quiet. So fucking silent when he needed it the most.
He sat down at his desk and cranked his neck to relieve the increasing tension but it was a lost cause.
“Sir, Rebecca Malone is here to see you” Jake said to him and he sighed, just a minute later Rebecca walked in, Jake was quick to scurry off after that
“Hello Rebecca, how are you doing?” he asked her as he gestured for her to sit down.
“What do you think?” She chuckled so he gave her a comforting smile.
“Have you been doing your sessions?” He asked her and her eyes welled up,
“Yeah but it's…useless..i am.. unlike y/n I don't have a detective looking out for me”
“Rebecca I am looking out for you ..there are officers patrolling outside your home..you don't have to worry okay?” He grabbed a glass of water and walked around the desk to give it to her as she seemed really shaken.
“Is there something else? Something you want to tell me?” he questioned her as he could sense something was wrong with her.
“Yeah well..in my statement i didn't mention something..i should have but I was trying to protect her” he raised his brows as she said that.
“What is it?” He asked her, keeping his voice controlled and professional but she started to cry.
“The killer, one time when he was assaulting me he said that you'd understand if you knew..that you'd understand the pain she can put you through” he looked at her confused as she said that. That didn't make any sense to him.
“Alright..why didn't you tell me this before? Who were you trying to protect?” He asked her, his voice was still gentle but firm.
“He was talking about y/n obviously.. wasn't he? Perhaps she had hurt you?”
“Look if you want him to get caught and punished you need to be honest with me here..you're listening to me right?” He said to her sternly but she broke down in tears instead so he sighed and placed his hand on her shoulder to calm her down but she got up and hugged him with a deathly grip. He looked around and his subordinates and colleagues were staring at him.
All his life he had tried to maintain a certain level of distance from women but he was surrounded by them now because of this case and his own doings.
Once Rebecca left he pondered over the information she had given him, trying to come up with an answer.
His phone rang again and he groaned loudly as he gripped the phone tightly between his palms.
“Mother” he mumbled as he picked up the call.
“Baby ..you haven't seen me in days…it's been days” her voice came out all frantic so he flipped the phone from his right ear to his left.
“Are you taking your medication?”
He asked her sternly. That's all he needed to know, that's all he cared about when his mother was in question.
“I worry about you..i love you and when you talk to me like this it hurts me”
“Well I'm busy right now..so can I call later?”
He asked her with irritation evident in his voice so she hung up the phone on him and he couldn't have been more grateful. He really needed to catch a break.
***********"
“Sooo what's going on between you and mister workaholic?” Donna asked you so you sighed.
“Nothing…we broke up and it's still that way...”
“Is that so? Honey..you're living with him again”
“Because he insisted”
“Uhhhuh? And since when do you do things that you don't want to do?” Donna asked you and you sighed in response. That was true , you never did anything in life that you didn't really want to. Well except the time when you were abducted, raped and assaulted by a killer.
You went home with Daemon because you really wanted to be close to him. He was what kept you going while you were locked in that basement, he was your light in that darkness but now you didn't know whether he was still at the same place you had left him or that he had moved on.
Later in the evening and at the cusp of night Daemon picked you up from her house and the ride home was silent, you recognised that look on his face very well, he was stressed about work.
“Is there anything about your time in captivity that you haven't shared with me yet?” He asked you so you shook your head in response
“I told you everything.. why?”
“Nothing…it's just…messy”
When you both reached home he fed you dinner and then sat you down for a movie..he figured that would keep your mind distracted for a while. In the middle of a scene a woman was shown singing a lullaby to her daughter which made you and Daemon both grimace in response.
But for different reasons.
He looked at you to check your reaction and your eyes were teary already so he grabbed the remote and turned it off immediately. You had mentioned that the killer's mother or the killer pretending to be his mother sang lullabies to you. He couldn't imagine how terrifying that must have been..
“Well that didn't go as planned” he mumbled as he scooted closer to you.
“It's okay…it's just…it's the same lullaby she or he sang to me–”
His eyes widened as you said that. He turned the tv on and rewinded the portion and you looked at him surprised. As you heard the lullaby again you had several flashbacks of her creepy voice singing to you.
“Are you sure it's the same lullaby?” He asked you, his face had gone pale for some reason you didn't understand..
“Of course I'm sure Daemon…can you turn it off please?” as your lips trembled he switched the tv off and pulled you in for a hug to comfort you.
All of this could have been just a major co-incidence but then he knew, it wasn't really a coincidence, it was a lead he had to follow.
After a while you pulled away from him and he seemed lost in his thoughts. Rebecca mentioning what the killer had said coupled with this reveal just made him feel conflicted.
“What is it?” you asked him as you noticed the worried look on his face.
“Nothing..it's nothing”
“It's not nothing…you have something…what is it?” He brushed his hair back with his fingers as he took a deep breath.
“It could be a coincidence..it's a common lullaby”
“What are you talking about?” You looked at him confused so he turned his eyes to you.
“My mother sang that lullaby to me whenever she dressed me up as her pretty girl"

okay now that i'm officially into fishman island time for Opinions™️ on post-timeskip strawhat design
luffy!!!
actually starting off very strong. i like that it's just a natural evolution of his og design but with some extra flourishes to show that he's matured w/ the scar on display. the cardigan is very cute and i like that they went with yellow for the sash for the tie-in to his ASL color. mwah. 10/10 no notes. oda cooked.
zoro
another one that i mostly really like. zoro is the most heavily japanese-coded of the strawhats it makes sense to lean more heavily into it with the cut of his coat and keeping his haramaki given how much wano-focus the second half of one piece has. i'm not gonna lie i think his silhoutte pre-timeskip was much cleaner and for a character like zoro i think simpler works better, but also.....i can see his tits out now......there are definitely things i liked about his pre-timeskip deisgn better but i still like this one nonetheless. and also i know his fit changes later so 8/10
nami
oh boy......well i will start with the positives. i actually do like the long hair. i don't like it better than her shag/cute pig tails but i do think it looks nice and i like the waves. i also like the jeans with the big fuck off heels because they scream 2011 to me <3 the bikini top is.....look if it was just a cute hanging out look i would love it i'm from california i know plenty of people who rock that look regularly but im sorry that combined with her going from like a b-cup to an e is deeply aggravating for reasons that have been discussed by plenty of other people. let her go back to her cute cotton t-shirts or her thriller bark sweaters. 6/10
usopp
my boy is jacked now!!!! good for him!!!! another kind of mixed bag. i like the colors but the design of the overalls feels a little busy to me personally. i love his hair being grown out but i miss the goggles being on top and i feel like you need to pick one or the other with the hat, again it's a little too busy between the hat and the goggles and the earphones. but there's nothing i actively dislike here i think it just needs a little fine-tuning 7/10
sanji
i'm going to keep it real with yall until oda said something in the SBS i thought the gag was that sanji's design hadn't changed at all 😭😭😭. also im actively having to suffer through his fishman island story-arc but there really isn't much for me to comment on. his facial hair hits the line-cook vibe im deeply surprised he can grow it and the suit is still a good design choice. nothing was gained and nothing was lost. so 8/10 i guess???
chopper
i know people have strong feelings about the kawaii-ification of chopper's design but i can't hate it because it's him and i love him to much. i do think it was a huge missed opportunity not to age him up a little because it's a little silly that he looks younger now than he did in drum island but as for the actual design itself it's not bad. i miss the style of his jamiroquai hat, but i like the fact that he wears cute little shirts now. 7/10
robin
SIGHHHHHH. i miss her bangs...i miss her melanin...i miss her goth swag. look this is mainly such a hit for me because 1) i saw all of oda's sketches and literally every other design he had for robin was better than the one he ended up going with. 2) between her alabasta, water 7/enies lobby, and thriller bark fits she reigned supreme among the fashionistas her drip was unparalleled. there isn't anything in her new design that screams robin to me. like if she was wearing the tied-up shirt with some capris i can see something but i don't know if this whole beachy look was because of fishman island or what but i just.....i'm not a fan. like they even could have tied in some of the aesthetics of the rest of the revolutionaries but this feels like just straight fanservice ove character design and im really not a fan. thankfully her dressrosa fit is completely gamechanging but that's not what we're ranking. im sorry queen. 3/10
franky
franky onepiece im so sorry but.....i really don't like this. his pre-timeskip design fucked SO HARD. the elvis motif. the speedo and hawaiian shirts. it was so silly and so memorable and i miss it!!!! i know he's trying to work the timeskip into the design like i just suggested he should have done with robin but it's just....it's a lot. feel like the gag would have been funnier if franky looks mostly the same and his body can just do all the stuff it can do now but what do i know. i do like the bit of his hairstyle changing every arc that's cute. 1/10
brook
thank god we're ending on a high note it was getting dire. i love this. he looks like the coolest grandpa at the club and it's so fun. the patterned pants with the still black suit jacket are so fun and i love some fun sunglasses. literally taking his pre-timeskip design and working his character growth into it, why did he not do this for everyone. anyway 10/10

One Piece chapter 1102 review
This unseasonably cold and wet Christmas morning, Oda gifts us with yet another heartbreaker of a flashback chapter to close out the year, but also a promise of a return to the present, and maybe some clues about what will happen when we get there. It's a more relaxed easing into the present than I'd expected - I've been predicting for weeks there'd be one last secret tragedy as a stinger to close things out, and maybe the self-destruct switch would qualify, but maybe I should just be happy that Kuma isn't being made to suffer more.
We pick up where the last chapter left off with Bonney on her adventure. I have to say, this is the most I've liked her character up to this point. She's never been unlikable, but the spirit of getting out there and adventuring and seeing the world while hunting for her lost dad really comes through now that we have the full story. The childlike quality of her ideas of piracy and ways of compromising them echoes Luffy's own energy. She feels like the main character of her own story here, one with enough substance that it'd be enjoyable even removed from the wider context of One Piece. The vibe of her crew is infectious, and I'm happy to see them living their best lives out in the world. Uh, hope those guys are alright after the encounters with Blackbeard and Sakazuki before the timeskip…
I'm looking forward to paying more attention to Bonney with also info on hand on my next reread.
There was a theory I read a few chapters ago that suggested Bonney's bounty shot up to Supernova levels because of the need to get her back to control Kuma. This chapter instead suggests a misconception that her crew targets children and the elderly because of her power. Which is funny, but far less interesting. I think I would have liked this more if we'd learned is much sooner. Like in her original introduction she's talked up as a ruthless attacker of the vulnerable, and it leads toward the first reveal of her Devil Fruit and the joke lands that way. Maybe an idea for The One Piece, right? That's just going to be my go to for anything that might have worked better with earlier setup now. It's fine though. We can even still assume that control of Kuma remained a factor for the World Government behind the scenes while also satisfying all the bad PR she has for leaving injured children and old people in her wake.
The bits with Luffy, Dragon, Smoker, Ace and Jinbei are partly fanservice, but they do also serve to keep the timeline in check. They're synchronising moments. The translation of Sabo's line in the scans indicated that Dragon was going to Loguetown alone, which would have killed the theory that Sabo had been spotted in the crowd there (pictured below), but the official release makes it ambiguous enough that Sabo might have gone. To be honest I was never big on that theory, even if it would make things more interconnected and foreshadowed. I figure seeing Luffy that close, particularly his apparent execution, would have triggered Sabo's memories returning.
Tumblr media
I'm a little disappointed that the return to the Thriller Bark doesn't give us anything new about Kuma's actual intentions should Luffy's allies have failed what now know to obviously have been a test. Seriously, was the plan to zip him off to Dragon, or just let him go and tell him he needs to find better friends, or given the previous scene with Vegapunk, would it just said to Kuma that Luffy didn't really have the Nika qualities he'd thought.
But that brings me to something I do like about the montage of Kuma learning about Luffy's life in the chapter. The rubber power is acknowledged, but only as a footnote. Even having seen a power that matches the myth, Nika can only be assumed to be a myth. Luffy's actions - declaring war on the World Government, earning the loyalty of the Thriller Bark victims, assaulting the unjust rulers of the world to save a single enslaved friend - are what make him stand out to Kuma. And while I'm sure we'll see something specific to Luffy, such as the D, the voice of all things, or yes, the fruit, become important to the plot eventually, but it's good that Oda is laying a foundation now that Luffy acts like Nika just by being himself, regardless of whatever other ways he's been made into the legendary figure by the narrative.
The next scene gives us two possible paths for things playing out in the present. The first is Kuma's self-destruct mechanism. Given that I've already put money down on Kuma's death, my immediate thought about this development is that it will be used to fight Saturn in a tragic heroic sacrifice. How ironic for Saturn to be destroyed by the mechanism he insisted Vegapunk install.
(But why wasn't it activated sooner, like when Kuma was rescued by the Revolutionaries, to keep them from reverse engineering his tech, or when he was rampaging in Marie Geoise? You have to assume there's a limited number of remotes for the thing, since the Celestial Dragons who've been using him can't be trusted with their impulses, and/or a limited range on the activation symbol.)
But the other curious thing is Vegapunk suggsting a personality switch. Which is odd, considering how impossible a reversion was said to be in previous chapters. And if Saturn really could detect it so reliably and keep it from being installed, why mention it in the first place? This feels like Oda giving himself an out - a way to save Kuma at the last moment just by saying 'oh, Vegapunk found a way to conceal it after all.' Which would be lame. The only way I'll accept this thing's use in the present is in tandem with the self-destruct so Kuma can go out as himself, and maybe exchange some words with Saturn on the way out.
And it's especially weird when you put it next to the revelation that viewing Kuma's extracted memories will consume them, taking off the board popular theories that Kuma would be restored by passing the bubble on to him. In one chapter, Kuma is twice doomed, once saved. Anyone's guess which way Oda will take it in the present.
The final sequence is the cherry on top of a fantastic One Piece flashback, one that will certainly be remembered as one of Oda's best. The life affirming message rings true to the broader themes of the series, bringing to mind scenes like Tom and Ace's deaths. Even the lab assistants are moved (oof, didn't Saturn order these guys' escape ship sunk? That's rougher knowing they were all on team Kuma all along), as the montage of Kuma's life and loved ones proves Vegapunk correct in calling Kuma a hero. And even in his final moments Kuma thinks first of his daughter. Beautiful stuff.
This is also very strongly framed like a death scene. It's not hard evidence, but I'm taking it as half a point toward Kuma's mind being unrecoverable and/or his destruction assured in the present.
And the flashback really does seem to be over. Never in the series' past have we cut from black panel gutters at the end of one chapter to the normal white ones in the first page of the next one. There's always a transitional page within the chapter, be it at the start or at the end. (At least for the full, multi-chapter flashbacks, I think one of the small, segmented Zou ones went straight from black to white over a chapter break.) I'm not sure where the fade to grey on the last page here leaves us. It's not quite the present, but with only a day left to cover, I can't imagine there being anything else worth showing. Maybe Bonney's view of the offscreen battle with York? A shorthand version only, though.
Either way, it's been a hell of a year for One Piece, and with Egghead's momentum going into its climax, I think the next one could be even better.

thinking out loud ‘bout them magic fruits, mild current anime spoiler and vague current manga spoiler I guess
Celebrating the anime adaptation of Demonio Fleur has got me thinking again about something that's kinda made my brain itch ever since Nika: at this point I really would not be shocked if (at a minimum) every other Devil Fruit user on the crew has a Folklore Identity lore drop at some point. Not one that the government necessarily gives a shit about, but a name nonetheless.
Robin mostly makes me double-take because, like Luffy, she's started exhibiting powers that aren't really on-theme for the powerset she's "supposed" to have, but we don't necessarily question it because it's so suited to her as a character. That said, she's ALWAYS kinda been associated with "biblically accurate angel"-adjacent imagery, with the creepy angel wings in Thriller Bark and regularly creating incoherent masses of limbs and eyeballs. I don't think we have in-world lore or a specific figure (unless her old nickname turns out to reference one) to tie her to yet, but I'm definitely side-eyeing it. Chopper admittedly feels like a reach because his DF has sort of lost the story beats over time that give me this vibe, but if you look all the way back to Drum Island through Enies Lobby or so his fruit's identity sure does feel more "yeti" than "human." Brook's been the most aggressive one in this department, not only did his powerset explode out of the "reviving human" box it was supposedly in in the official historical record, but he's been given multiple names and associated with in-world figures and cults. You have him as "Lord Satan" (being actively prayed to as a pre-existing figure no less), the minks' "Baron Corpse" (IIRC never directly confirmed they have an actual Baron Samedi type spirit in their culture but it's still a ref), and arguably the hilariously dedicated Soul King fanbase counts too - especially given the acknowledged (WCI) double meaning of "Soul King" as both a music thing and The King Of Souls. Could be a couple different things going on but this is just suspect as fuck to me. Vegapunk's theory could also mean that (at least in Brook and Robin's case) the phenomenon is kinda happening in reverse, since their titles were imposed on them from outside and the rest only started to emerge after that. Who knows though. I just. Anybody else getting this vibe. ( o_o)

Dad's Playlist
My music taste is a bit like a sponge, absorbing a little bit of everything from everywhere, but some of the foundational parts of my music taste are influenced from the music taste of my father. He is one of the most influential figures in my life, and I lost him in April of 2021. He was a hard worker and an inspiration to me like no one else can be. Our relationship was a close one, and music was one of the ways through which we connected best. One way that I am able to sustain that connection is by listening to the music that he liked, that he showed me, or just music that reminds me of him for one reason or another. I’ve compiled a playlist of just some of that music in the hopes of sharing the music that he found special, and why I too find it special.
Thriller – Michael Jackson
So, I’m well aware that this is a weird place to start. Bear with me. As a child of the 80s, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album was the first my dad ever owned. During my childhood, I was drawn to some of the music of Michael Jackson, and some of his best work came from the “Thriller” album. I also find myself reminded of the fact that my dad always went the extra mile to draw a laugh or a smile out of those he cared about, stepping to the center of the dance floor at family weddings and get-togethers, and I would join him. The brand of 80s dance pop that Michael Jackson epitomized has the perfect energy to invoke that joyful spirit that he always aimed to create. Another thing to note: one cannot discuss “Thriller” (the song) without acknowledging its Halloween implications. My dad was not always a big Halloween fan, but he was a builder. His passion for creation led to some clever-but-uncomfortable Halloween costumes made with cardboard and ingenuity.
Train Kept a Rollin’ – Aerosmith
My dad loved Aerosmith. It would be impossible for me to compile a playlist of his music without Aerosmith involved. He would rant about this song’s album Get Your Wings as well as Toys in the Attic. This song features the particular riff-heavy, chugging rock sound that my dad loved. He never had any official music training (beyond attempting to teach himself guitar, which I only found out about after his passing), but he was always captivated by the drums. Drummers like Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee filled his playlists. The chugging snare drum interlude in “Train Kept a Rollin’”, as simple as it is technically, is part of the rock sound my dad always loved.
Live Like You Were Dyin’ – Tim McGraw
Country music is a genre that my dad found a love for in his adult life, and one that I’ve grown up to love as well. Tim McGraw’s smooth voice telling heartfelt stories like in this song epitomize the sort of country music he and I always loved most, as opposed to the “bro country” about tractors, trucks, and drinking. As I mentioned, my dad didn’t have any “real” musical training, but he could sing along with Tim so well, and I was always impressed by it. This song feels particularly poignant to listen to now after his passing considering the not-so-subtle themes of the precious yet ephemeral nature of life. The opening line “He said I was in my early forties, with a lotta life before me” hits home in particular as well, because my dad was only 42 at the time of his passing. This song, though difficult for me to listen to at times, is one I always come back to when I’m thinking of him.
One Day You Will – Lady A
I was looking through the discography of this wonderful country trio and struggling to pick just one song of theirs that reminded me of my dad. I decided to text my sister to ask which song she associated most with him. She quickly sent this song over. It’s one I hadn’t actually considered, but I realized how perfect it really is. Upon listening to it, I was immediately transported back in time: blasting Lady A music in the car. The presence of a low male voice and a higher female voice gave everyone in the car a part to sing, and allowed us all to sing together and connect through this music. And accompanying the beautifully harmonized vocals, a gorgeous pad of strings and guitars. As I listened today, I realized that the lyrics almost feel like a message from him, or at least a message to grieving souls, that things will be ok, even if they seem difficult now.
Snowblind Friend – Steppenwolf
Much like the closeness I feel with my dad, he felt a similar closeness with his. We always called my dad’s father Pop, and Pop loved Steppenwolf. He met lead singer John Kay so many times that Kay remembered Pop by name. Much like I cannot separate my dad from the music of Aerosmith, Pop cannot be separated from the music of Steppenwolf. This song in particular is one of the Steppenwolf songs that resonated with my dad. Pop passed away in March of 2019. He and my father now reside in the same cemetery in Camden, NJ.
Sweet Annie – Zac Brown Band
Another smooth country voice that my dad could emulate impressively well, Zac Brown and his band are a group that create some of the most heartfelt country music I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. They are master storytellers, and this song proves that. This sentimental ode to a loved one is filled with gorgeous vocal harmonies and beautifully poetic lyrics that made this song a favorite of mine and my father’s.
I’m Movin’ On – Rascal Flatts
My dad remembered exactly where he was the first time he heard this song. He told me so about a thousand times. It was one of those songs that came on at just the time he needed to hear it. Rascal Flatts is a country group that is admittedly guilty of some of those country songs that are just about drinking (and some of those songs are actually pretty great), but songs like these challenge that stereotype and carry with them so much meaning, soul, and heart. This song possibly spawned a love of 6/8 ballads that my dad didn’t even know he had. One night, I remember listening to music with him and I noticed that a lot of the songs he really liked were all slow 6/8 ballads. Out of the entire playlist, it was this song that came closest to bringing me to tears, which made me appreciate the long silence at the end of the track so much more. The fact that this song presents such deep personal themes and actually gives you a moment of silence to digest them is so powerful.
Broken Halos – Chris Stapleton
Chris Stapleton was a country voice that my dad found later in his adult life, so it isn’t one I grew up with like Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, or Lady A. Even still, Stapleton’s voice and his style resonated deeply with my dad. This was one of his favorites of Stapleton’s discography. Though I personally don’t connect with this song quite as much as many of the others on this list, it only felt right that I include it.
Desperado – Clint Black
This is a cover of a song by The Eagles. I didn’t realize that when my dad showed me this cover one day in his truck, but he seemed to like this version more than the original. Clint Black’s voice and the instrumental arrangement seem to have resonated more with my dad than The Eagles’ version. Another example of the heartfelt, narrative-driven songs that he was drawn to, this is another song I couldn’t leave out.
My Wish – Rascal Flatts
“My Wish” is one of the best songs in Rascal Flatts’ lengthy discography. This is another of their sincere, sentimental songs that really feels like a message directly from him. “My wish for you is that this life becomes all that you want it to.” More than anything else, my dad reiterated constantly to my sister and I, that he wanted what was best for us. He was such a dedicated father, brother, son, and person in general. He danced to this song with his niece, Ashley, at her wedding. He was the favorite uncle to all my cousins, and he was always the handyman of the family. He worked tirelessly to give everything that he could for us, and this song feels like the closest thing I can get to him talking directly to me.
This music, and music in general is so valuable and powerful. It has the power to connect people and even to bring back those we’ve lost. Music was one of the ways my dad and I best connected during his life, and it remains such to this day. Nothing can replace the moments I had with him, but these songs can at least invoke the memories and the feelings of those moments. I hope that others can connect with this music in some way and find some value and meaning in it.

'After a memorable Oscars snub for one 2008 blockbuster, Oppenheimer looks to be Christopher Nolan's best chance of award redemption. The J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic continues obliterating box office records after passing the $700 million mark at the box office. Not only is Oppenheimer the highest-grossing R-rated movie of 2023, but it is also the highest-grossing WW2 movie of all time. Boosted by the "Barbenheimer" event alongside Barbie, Oppenheimer became an instant win for Nolan, and the achievements haven't slowed down.
Oppenheimer, of course, is Christopher Nolan's twelfth directed movie. After making his directorial debut with 1998's Following, the filmmaker's follow-up led by Guy Pearce, Memento, served as his breakthrough project. Nolan then continued making a name for himself, releasing a new film every two or three years. Through standouts like The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet, Nolan became synonymous with mind-bending thrillers. Granted, he also built a reputation within the superhero genre after directing 2005's Batman Begins. However, redemption for Batman Begins' 2008 sequel is where Oppenheimer can come in.
Oppenheimer Could Win Best Picture 15 Years After Dark Knight's Oscars Snub
If Oppenheimer wins an Academy Award for Best Picture, it would officially redeem The Dark Knight's infamous Oscars snub following its 2008 release. Nolan's Batman masterpiece, which broke numerous box office records, is considered one of the best movies to come out of the 2000s and easily one the best of the superhero genre of all time. Despite its critical acclaim, it was a major snub for Best Picture at the 2009 Academy Awards ceremony, and there was a wide belief that The Dark Knight could have beaten the year's competition.
Despite The Dark Knight's Best Picture Oscar snub, Nolan celebrated eight nominations connected to his movie, including two wins through Best Sound Editing and Heath Ledger's posthumous Best Supporting Actor win for his performance as the Joker. The Dark Knight probably should have been Nolan's Best Picture win, but his real chances came from Inception and Dunkirk, both of which were nominated but lost out on the awards. Nolan was also nominated for Best Director for his work on the first WW2 movie, so Oppenheimer's success at the Oscars would fulfill more redemption than just The Dark Knight's snub.
How Likely It Is That Oppenheimer Will Win Best Picture
Shortly after its release, Oppenheimer immediately attracted Oscars buzz, primarily led by its stellar cast performances. Cillian Murphy's portrayal as the "father of the atomic bomb" is already considered a shoo-in nomination for Best Actor, and co-stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon are also predicted to receive nominations. Aside from various technical nominations, it's extremely likely that Oppenheimer and Nolan will receive Best Picture and Best Director nominations. The vastness of the storytelling, in addition to remarkable performances and stunning cinematography, can't go unnoticed. The pop culture notoriety has also helped propel Oppenheimer as a box office juggernaut. That said, it will face steep competition.
Expectations for Barbie to be up for Best Picture is growing, but Oppenheimer's biggest competition will be Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, arriving in October 2023. If any movie could ruin Christopher Nolan's Best Picture Oscar chances with Oppenheimer, it would be the upcoming film led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. However, the fact that Killers of the Flower Moon is getting a limited theatrical release before dropping on Apple TV+ could end up hurting Scorsese's Best Picture chances. The wider buzz surrounding Oppenheimer may very well end up going in Christopher Nolan's favor, helping him get that Best Picture win 15 years after that significant snub.'

REVIEW
Movieland by Lee Goldberg
Eve Ronin #4
Eve Ronin doesn’t seem to get a break…unless perhaps a bone is broken. That said, she can outmaneuver and outpolitic a few of the high muckety-mucks…at least as long as she has Duncan at her side…though that might not be much longer as he readies for retirement. This time Eve is still dealing with colleagues who wish her ill will as well as tackling a murder case that could involve a serial killer while juggling her job, her family, a series being developed based on her life and…a few other things.
What I liked: * Eve: young, intrepid, strong, intelligent, brash, outspoken, magnet for pain, has a lot to learn as well as a lot of growing up to do. I want to know more about her and wonder how she will look a decade from now.
* Duncan: wise, seasoned, smart, decades on the job, great detective, has always gone by the book, is challenged by Eve, up for retirement soon, loving husband and father, perfect job partner for Eve
* The way Eve and Duncan worked together as a team
* The view into the political aspects of the police world
* Seeing Eve’s family again
* The few colleagues that have Eve’s back
* The romance that might be developing between Eve’s sister and someone Eve works with
* The setting – used to live in Southern California so names are familiar
* The writing, plot, and that all the loose ends were tied up at the end
* The police procedural aspect of the story with the threads followed and where they led
* Knowing that there will be another book to look forward to in this series
* All of it really except…
 What I didn’t like
* The people and events I was meant not to like
* Not a dislike but the thought that Eve might want/need to have a book or two where she is not injured and put into the hospital
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I rad more in this series? Definitely.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 4-5 Stars
        BLURB
Malibu Creek State Park is a beautiful locale for campers, tourists, hikers, and Hollywood. For Detective Eve Ronin, it’s a backdrop for murder in a riveting thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg. For decades Malibu Creek State Park was the spectacular natural setting where Hollywood fantasies were made. But when a female camper is gunned down, it becomes a real-life killing ground. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives Eve Ronin and Duncan Pavone are assigned the case…which Duncan fears is the latest in a series of sniper attacks that began long before Eve came to Lost Hills. Seven victims over fourteen months…and top officials still refuse to see a connection. Eve and Duncan are stonewalled, threatened, and ordered to keep quiet. But Eve won’t back down. She’s no stranger to intimidation or corruption—she’s had a target on her back from day one at Lost Hills station. Despite finding no evidentiary links between the shootings, Eve and Duncan follow their instincts into the shadows of Malibu Creek, where it’s not enough to expose the secrets and break the conspiracy of silence. They also have to make it out alive.

Blog Assignment #6 (This excerpt © 2022 by ...) This excerpt is 463 words
This is sadly, the last blog post during my time as a student for the Afrofuturism course I am taking. For our final we were given the option to turn in a short story of our choice, and our own making of course. I decided to go with a story inspired by my love story and also my heritage and also my love for thrillers, especially ones with a big twist in them. The story follows a boy named Idris, which means a fiery warrior or leader. He comes from a very poor village on the borders of what is now known as Ethiopia, while the woman he loves is the princess of the empire, who lives in the Palace. Yet, this is not your typical love story, we see that when a royal is to come of age they have to go through the “Ritual of Purification” before they are able to officially rule. The princess in the story's name is Helen, meaning the light that shines and she has a twin brother named Biniam, meaning the lucky son. Yet, in this story he is not so lucky…
The twins made a promise to each other to never and I mean never be like their parents, regardless of what that may look like, they will help each other meet that promise. Biniam intends to become the King, but leads in a way he believes a king should lead, with his heart, and soul. While Helen wants to uphold that promise by never ever being a ruler. In order to achieve that, she will need to avoid going through the Ritual that makes her an official royal.
The twins despite the Royals, just like Idris, because during their path of ruling, they lost their humanity. They are cold blooded people who only have the empire’s best interest. Idris and Helen, with the help of Biniam made a plan for Helen to escape and run away with Idris.
They even made a home in secret to live their days out together that only the twins and Idris know about. So when the twins came of age and it was time for them to go through their ritual. Helen and Idris successfully run away. Months later, the royal army found Helen and Idris’ secret home, with no other than Biniam leading the army. This time, Biniam seemed different, cold, or even less human. It looked just like Biniam but it was clear to Helen that this was not her brother. They take Helen away to go through her Ritual of Purification, and throw Idris into the Palaces dungeon to be executed in front of the public to serve aws an example, yet his story does not end there, nor does Idris’s and Helen’s love story…

True or False Monkey King
Reporting on another JTTW animated film slated for 2021! The full title is 齐天大圣之真假孙悟空 | Great Sage Equaling Heaven: True or False Sun Wukong (official Eng. title still TBD).
According to Douban the leading voice actors are Liu Xiao Ling Tong and Ma Dehua, which is pretty big name casting in the world of JTTW! LXTX is Sun Wukong’s original actor from the 1986 JTTW series, the most popular/influential jttw adaptation in the mainland (and the first Chinese television serial based on jttw), and Ma Dehua was the original Zhu Bajie from 1986.
Tumblr media
Here’s my rough translation (and yes it sounds like a psychological thriller for some reason LMAO). It’s extremely long in English:
Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equaling Heaven, protects the Tang Monk on their pilgrimage to the west, facing many hardships along the journey. This time, however, they come across another Sun Wukong who looks exactly like himself. What’s even more unthinkable, is that not only does this powerful monkey demon want to replace Sun Wukong, but when the true and false Monkey Kings clash, nobody can tell them apart. Who is this fake Wukong? [Who] wants to join the pilgrimage instead of eating the Tang Monk’s flesh?
Sun Wukong and Xiao Bailong search for the truth, doubting every step. Is [the impostor] the evil side of himself that Wukong expelled or is Wukong splitting personalities? Sun Wukong has never encountered such danger and such a great challenge. But when the answers become clear, Wukong is unable to face the true relationship between himself and the truth: I am who? Who am I?
Wukong never expected the monkey demon challenging him not to be a normal demon, but instead a younger brother from Mount Huaguo, the Six Eared Macaque. A bond of brotherhood. The young Six Eared Macaque worshiped Sun Wukong and was greatly aggrieved by the injustices done towards Wukong and Mount Huaguo. Lost in his jealousy, admiration, and imitation of Wukong, the Six Eared Macaque lost himself in the process. Now he wants to replace the “defeated, weak” Wukong in front of him, vowing to become a buddha himself. Faced with choosing between brotherhood or enlightenment [from the pilgrimage], what will he do?
The teaser is out on bilibili, and not gonna lie, the art/design looks... mediocre. But it might still be worth watching just for LXLT and Ma Dehua’s voices.
Teaser Transcript:
Wukong: Liuer (Six Ear), wake up!
Six Ear: You’re the one who needs to wake up! I’m going to win back everything that was lost!

So...Misery style, how would you make Tomione work? (Or how would you do a Tomione story?)
Thanks, Anon, this might be harder than the Dramione one.
Well, again, to please my deranged captor, I'd likely follow the plot of your standard Tomione fic and hope it passes muster. "Oh yeah, Hermione's back in time and she's doing back and forth mind games with Tom and it's really intellectual." With any luck, my feet aren't smashed into oblivion.
But I think you're trying to get at what I would really do if I really had to write Tom/Hermione and I had to make it something I would read. At least, that seems to be the spirit of this ask.
So, we're going the thriller route people. A lot like Misery, actually.
Instead of Ginny, twelve-year-old Hermione picks up the diary. Like Ginny, Hermione quickly becomes besotted with Tom Riddle trapped inside. However, unlike Ginny, Hermione goes straight to the library and starts asking pesky questions.
Hermione's never heard of memories stored in objects before, the theory behind portraits and pensieves are completely different, what spells did Tom use and where did he find them? Did Tom Riddle invent an entirely new branch of magic at the age of 16 without anyone noticing? What was Tom's special service to the school?
Tom starts sweating when it becomes clear that Hermione's stumbling a bit too close to the truth (that this is not ordinary magic and highly dangerous shit) and that she's clearly going to start asking around about Tom Riddle (to Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Hagrid, who were all near Hogwarts at the same time Tom was going to school).
Tom confesses that he may have created the diary using something very... illegal. Hermione is appalled and asks if it was gasp dark magic! He admits it is but points out it's a bit late now, like it or not, he's stuck in the diary and running to Dumbledore isn't going to make that go away any time soon. And it wasn't like Tom asked to be shoved in a diary either.
Hermione's very conflicted, on the one hand, Tom's the first real intellectual friend she's ever had. Harry and Ron are nice, but they're morons and they thinks he's a nerd. Tom encourages her intellectual pursuits and confirms her concern over various what not and what have you happening in Hogwarts.
Eventually, Hermione decides that Tom in the diary can't help being a diary (though the other Tom, the real Tom, she'd have words with), and decides that she'll try to help him get a body.
Great, that's great, Tom says.
But it keeps getting worse.
Tom tries to possess Hermione, but unlike Ginny, Hermione knows that Tom is a dangerous, dark, artifact. If she's suffering negative health effects, losing her memory and ending up in the girl's lavatory, she's going to research this and decide that either a) she's suffering ill effects of using dark magic b) she just got possessed by Tom.
Either way, she tells him she can't use the diary anymore, it's affecting her health and she must research. Well, Hermione researching does Tom no fucking good, but he can't stop her.
The Chamber of Secrets, as a result, is never opened.
Instead, Hermione continues researching, and Harry and Ron... begin to get on her nerves. It's not like last year, there's no Flamel to research, no over-arching mystery, and they seem to be growing tired of her. In turn, Hermione's getting a little tired of quidditch, getting detention, etc.
She's a little tired of Hogwarts, if she's being honest with herself.
Hermione's now had a taste of having a friend who isn't there to simply use her brains. And it's very addicting. She decides not to tell Ron and Harry about Tom, they'd just get needlessly concerned (the irony of this isn't lost on her but what can you do)
In the end, she opens back up the diary, and point blank asks what Tom needs to get a body. Before Tom can tell her, Hermione lists out her own theories. Life cannot be created from nothing, golems and puppets cannot last in the long term, to get a real body... human sacrifice is on the table, isn't it?
Well shit, Tom thinks to himself. He tries to assure Hermione it isn't but ends up confessing that, well, yes, it kind of is.
They have another huge row about it, Hermione slams the diary shut, but the wheels in her brain are spinning.
Does anyone deserve to die?
Hermione, at first, adamantly tells herself the answer is no. No one deserves to be sacrificed. Tom's fate is cruel, but the original Tom made his bed and should lie in it. It's unfortunate, but that's just life. Not the diary's fault, of course, but nothing that can be helped.
But then she keeps thinking about it.
Malfoy struts through the school like a peacock, sneering every time he sees her, laughing every time Snape deducts points from her in Potions for being a 'smarmy know-it-all'. Every time he can get away with it he's shoving her in hallways, calling her a mudblood, and assuring her that she's worth less than the dirt beneath her feet.
She watches as Malfoy torments and bullies Harry, she looks at Draco's father, and she asks herself if the world would really be so much worse off if Draco Malfoy were to disappear?
Draco Malfoy's being groomed to use dark magic, he practically brags about it at every opportunity, why is his life worth more than Tom Riddle's, someone who has paid the price for dark magic?
Isn't Hermione, in a roundabout way, only giving Draco what he deserves? The fate he'd meet at some point in the not so distant future?
Draco does something phenomenally cruel and stupid to the trio, likely to Harry, and that settles it. Hermione's going to murder that motherfucker and get Tom Riddle a body.
Hermione tells Tom the plan, she's passing off the diary to Draco, she has her full blessing, her permission, and whatever help he requires from her to eat Draco Malfoy alive.
Tom is unwillingly impressed, he was a vicious gremlin as a twelve-year-old, but even he wasn't committing murder in cold blood.
Tom's not sure how he feels about murdering a Malfoy, that's bound to get noticed, but Hermione's unyielding. Draco Malfoy, or Hermione goes to Dumbledore.
So, Draco Malfoy it is.
The rest of the year is spent with Tom Riddle murdering Draco Malfoy and coming up with some excuse for his disappearance. The chamber isn't opened as Hermione reminds Tom that this would make it entirely too obvious who is behind this. Instead, Tom likely has Draco partake in increasingly erratic schemes to humiliate Harry Potter that end up endangering himself.
Near the end of school, Draco disappears into the Forbidden Forest to find acromantulas to put in Potter's bed and... never comes back.
A huge search is put on, Draco Malfoy is never found, and the acromantula infestation in the forest is now actively battled by ministry employees. Dumbledore is sacked as headmaster, Hagrid fired for having been responsible for the acromantulas in the first place, and Hogwarts is closed the following year.
Hermione is... conflicted about all of this. She certainly didn't mean to fire Hagrid (had no idea he was even remotely involved with the acromantulas) and certainly not Dumbledore. It wasn't Dumbledore's fault at all.
Tom, who is now a free man but has no idea what to do with himself, meets up with Hermione and points out that Dumbledore should have been sacked ages ago: he let kids get away with this stupidly dangerous shit and the year before actively endangered his students and lured a dark wizard into the castle. As for Hagrid, he raised a dragon illegally on school grounds, did release his pet acromantula into the wild, and more. They were terrible at their jobs.
Hermione, ever so reluctantly, agrees.
It's too bad though, Hagrid was very nice and Dumbledore's a great wizard (don't even get Tom started).
As for Tom, well, he had such dreams. Of course he planned to either meet up with his glorious self or (upon learning that Voldemort was blown up by a toddler) take the mantle of Voldemort for himself. But now that he's out, he has no idea where to start. Murder Harry Potter, certainly, but after that?
Tom only has the vaguest idea of who the original Death Eaters were, and they seem to have effectively scattered. More, how does he go about this? Sure, Tom had ideas when he was in school, but they were just ideas. He's never led a revolution before, has no idea how to impersonate an older, more knowledgeable, version of himself. He barely understands the political climate in this new, post-Voldemort, Britain.
Tom keeps hanging around Hermione because, well, inertia. He has no idea what else to do. (Hermione, while still torn over the consequences of her actions as well as the distant thought that she enabled murder, is quite delighted to have him around).
Tom tries to wheedle Harry's address out of Hermione and gets a lot more information than he bargained for. Harry lives with abusive muggle relatives, Dumbledore is apparently keeping him there, all of this sounds bizarre. Tom is officially weirded out.
Still wants to murder Harry, of course, but also wants to dig into this a little further...
And before this becomes a full on fic outline, eventually this will lead to the murder of Dumbledore, probably the murder of Ron when Ron inadvertently discovers 'the truth', Hermione telling Tom they're now an item, Tom trying to escape the relationship, only to learn there's no escaping Hermione.
Hermione becomes the next dark lord. Tom has no idea how this even happened.

T H E T A K E O V E R - Chapter 1 (Tension)
Tumblr media
The recruits of Bangtan Academy were trained to be super soldiers, to be the strongest, fastest, most cunning fighters in the world, now they are being put to the test! You were at the bottom of your class, but you noticed the cracks in the system first, what are you going to do? Run or try to save the world?
BTS Apocalypse Dystopian Invasion AU. Mystery Thriller. BTS member(s?) x reader
Warnings: military, guns, torture
Hi, here's a little in between chapter for you! Chapter theme: tension, and also you and Namjoon sitting in a tree, k i s s i n g.
Word count: 3.6k
---
Military aircraft after military aircraft land in the grassy plains surrounding your school. Large booming noises signal their approach as they land. Helicopters whirling turbines chop through the sky.
And then soldier after soldier descends out of the cabins, dressed from head to toe in black and carrying large weapons. The soldiers fill the compound, and then start advancing to your school.
---
Your class watches the chaos unfold outside, faces glued to the gymnasium’s windows. Shouldn’t we be doing something? And where the hell is Namjoon? you think. You still can’t find him anywhere!
You start to move to the spot where your drill instructor stands, but the gymnasium doors’ burst open.
Soldiers fill the empty space, guns drawn.
Your class turns around, hands up.
You do the same, you’re scared, but you’ve been trained in these types of situations. You don’t scream in fright or try to run away or fight them. You wait obediently, you were all on the same team after all.
Red lasers pointing at every chest, a dot centered on yours, you wonder why the soldiers are acting like this, but they have to have a good reason, they're simply following orders.
The soldiers quickly move your class into the gymnasium’s locker room. A line of large military men push and shove your class inside, even your drill instructor. Was this a command from even higher officials?
You’re cold and wet and confused along with the rest of your class, but you stay silent. The only noises in the halls come from yells amongst the occupying soldiers and the chirping of beeps on each soldier's vest radio. You keep quiet and remember your training...observe, assess, strategize, negotiate, and then…
None of this makes sense! Your class stays locked inside, abandoned by the soldiers now that you were caged in. Some classmates step on benches to peer through the frosted locker room windows, watching as military vehicles move around campus. Some go to their lockers. You didn’t have such a luxury, as this was the men’s locker room, so you have to endure sitting in your wet swimsuit hoping the temperature will eventually rise.
A pair of hands pinch your sides. “Namjoon!” you hiss, pulling him into an empty row. “Where the fuck were you?!”
“What are you talking about?”
“Don’t,” you glare. He’s being secretive and you don’t like it. “I know you went somewhere.”
“You noticed?” He admits, “Looking out for me?” His expression changes and he presses his body closer to yours, knocking your back into a locker. The noise has you both looking around, quickly moving to another location.
Hidden again, you spin around to face Namjoon. “What the hell is going on?”
“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out,” he says, “Stay here.”
You grab his arm. “Don’t leave me alone,” you whisper.
“Stay low, don’t make yourself stand out, until I come back. Can you do that for at least a couple of hours?” He pats your head and you shove him away, only half serious in your anger.
He’s doing that thing he does when he’s working on a plan, eyes scanning the room, lost in thought, not really there with you. You sigh, resigning yourself to putting your trust in him. Namjoon has never lied to you before, and he’s second in class for a reason.
You huff, “Yes...”
---
He lied.
The sun was setting and Namjoon had yet to return.
This is annoying. Why won’t anyone say what’s going on?! Not even your instructor has said a word as he stands guard at the entrance, remaining impassive.
You busy yourself by trying to break into lockers, searching for something to wear over your damp swimsuit. With your ear pressed against a locker door you slowly turn the dial until you hear a click. You smile to yourself, whirling it in the opposite direction.
“What are you doing to my locker?”
You close the door immediately after opening it. “Oh, this is the MEN'S locker room…I forgot?”
“Yeah sure. You’re going to have to explain.” Your classmate places his arms on either side of your head, trapping you against the metal doors. Your face goes hot at his close proximity, and you quickly duck underneath his outstretched arm, jumping away from him.
“I was just looking for some clothes to change into, okay? it doesn’t look like they want to let us out any time soon.” You turn to escape but he grabs your hand to stop you. His expression softens.
“Sorry, I only have one set of clothes, I can give you my shirt. I’ll ask my friends if they have an extra pair of pants.”
You turn your body to the side and lean your head on the adjoining locker, watching as your classmate reopens his locker and pulls out a duffle bag. Jeon Jungkook, the top student in your class; he’s fast, strong, and excels at strategy and combat, along with pretty much everything else.
You couldn’t hate him even if you wanted to, someone with the most coveted top spot would most certainly have haters, but Jungkook was a kind soul who charmed his teachers and fellow classmates, loved by the whole academy.
You never really talked to him. What would the top student and bottom in class have in common anyways? If he wasn’t receiving another award, standing in the spotlight, you mostly pretended he didn’t exist, but now, you can’t help but stare at the contour of his muscles through his under armour. He’s cute, very cute. Of course he is, he's Bangtan Academy’s golden recruit. Jungkook gives you his black shirt, which you gratefully pull over your head.
“Are you hungry?” Jungkook hands you a cereal bar. Cute and sweet, and very out of your league.
“Oh, thank you.”
“What do you think is going on?”
“I have no idea, maybe some kind of attack? We are close to the border.”
“Did you see how they looked at us?” You did notice, their cold expressions as they pointed their guns at you to move. Anger, no, it looked like fear.
“Did you want to come with me to meet my friends?”
You shake your head. “I’m looking for someone.”
“Right,” he pauses. “I haven’t seen Joon since this morning.”
You cross your arms over your chest, playing dumb. “Who?”
Jungkook looks at you knowingly, smiling. “You know...Joon is one of my best friends.”
“If he’s your best friend then why don’t you know where he is?” you snap.
“I thought you weren’t looking for him.”
You clamp your mouth shut and narrow your eyes at him. He’s cute, sweet and annoying, you think. “Gotta go,” you gesture a half-hearted salute and turn to leave.
“Wait!” Jungkook grabs your arm, but you’re annoyed and tired of waiting. If Namjoon was going to lie then you didn’t need to keep your promise either, you were going to find out what’s going on yourself! And the last thing you need is his friends getting in the way, especially someone as conspicuous as Jeon Jungkook. So you don’t feel bad when you grip Jungkook's forearm and press down on the muscle. He releases you as you pull your arm back, aiming for his jaw.
But Jungkook is faster than you. He’s faster than everyone, and has you in a chokehold before you know what hit you.
“Jeez, I didn’t mean to make you mad. Stop fighting,” he grunts, finding it difficult to hold you still.
Easy for him to say, when his windpipe isn’t being crushed. Luckily, you could hold your breath for a really long time, remember? So, either you were going to pass out or one of your kicks was going to hurt Jungkook enough for him to let you go.
“What’s going on?”
Or perhaps there was a third option. “Ji-min,” you wheeze.
Jimin rushes forward, Jungkook loosens his hold, and you elbow him hard, shoving Jimin out of your way as you run back to the entrance.
You walk through the crowd, away from the pair and towards your objective. They surely wouldn’t follow you, right? You glance back and don’t see anyone. No, of course not, why would they? You’re not even on their radar, two top students like Jungkook and Jimin, and you, practically an outcast. You scan the locker room one last time, hoping to see your big dumb idiot friend, tell him off for talking about you to Jungkook, What had the been talking about? Making fun of you, probably, but the second in the class is nowhere.
You keep moving calmly, silently steaming with anger inside at Namjoon for making you worry about him.
You know the showers are in the back of the locker room, connected to the bathrooms without a door, and through the bathrooms, you can make it to a hallway and into the girls locker room, or even outside of the building!
You quietly pass through the showers and to the door leading to the connecting hallway, listening to the beeps of radio outside. There must be soldiers standing guard somewhere close...
You open the door slightly, peering down the hall. You can see as far as the main entrance, where they set up what looks like a...decontamination box? What? That can’t be right, but that’s what it looks like. A line of soldiers outside are slowly making their way into your school, through the box, their uniforms sprayed down with chemicals, walking single file down The Academy’s halls, and towards your dorms, where you lived. An uneasy feeling settles in the pit of your stomach. What is going on?
A man grabs you, “How did you get here?”
You push him off you, and when he grabs you by the throat, you slam your arm down into his bicep, punch him in the stomach and in the nose. It was a reflex, after years of taking defense classes. You might have been much smaller than him, but it seemed like you were quicker. As long as he didn’t land a solid hit you could easily take him down!
And you did, letting him fall onto the ground at your feet. You felt sorry for him, but you had no time to offer your apologies. Not now, not when others noticed the scuffle and were closing in on you.
You run through the halls and straight into another soldier, bounce off his gear and fall to the ground.
“Err, welcome to Bangtan Academy?” You place your hands up in surrender covering your eyes as six rifles are pointed at your head. Fuck you, Namjoon.
---
“You! What the hell do you think you're doing, cadet?! Do you think because you’re the headmaster's daughter you can-” It’s always the same shit. For years, your teachers would throw the fact that your father was the headmaster right in your face. Why weren’t you faster, stronger, smarter? You were the headmaster’s daughter, weren’t you? What’s the matter with you? If you failed a test, classmates made fun of you, if you aced a test, they assumed it was favoritism.
“Are you listening to me, cadet?! Do you think you run the school!?” You wish they could be at least a little creative in their insults, you lost count at how many times you've heard that phrase before.
You inwardly groan, you hated being the center of attention, and right now everyone was watching you get chewed out. “-NOW GET BACK IN LINE SOLDIER. I’LL KNOW IF YOU STEP ONE TOE OUT-.”
“Uh-huh, you didn’t notice Namjoon was missing either.” Oh shit, why couldn’t you just keep your big mouth shut?
The soldiers call for backup on their radio remotes, and just like that, they are leading your drill instructor away with them, locking the door behind them. You feel a special kind of satisfaction watching him leave confused, but now Namjoon was in trouble too, fuck.
You find Jungkook who doesn’t seem to be phased by your earlier violent reaction. Good, because you weren’t going to apologize. You tell him if he finds you pants you’ll let him know what you saw.
“Why are they going into our dorm rooms?!” Jung Hoseok, third in your class and owner of said pants, whispers.
You sigh. “I don’t know, but I think Bangtan Academy is being taken over...” So where does that leave the rest of you? Where is Namjoon?
---
The sun set hours ago, replaced by the moon high above the sky. You and your classmates haven’t eaten, haven’t been told what’s going on, and you haven’t tried to escape again, resigning yourself to sitting in a corner, trying to send short messages to Namjoon - ambivalent texts in case anyone was monitoring your phone lines - who continues to ignore you. You clench your fists, he’s leaving you on read, at a time like this?!
Eventually soldiers move your class along with the rest of the academy to an old wing of the school. This hall was where they put old equipment and outdated computers, broken and left to collect dust. You felt like one of those ancient machines, used up and discarded. It just didn’t make any sense, sure you and the rest of the students lacked experience, but you all were stronger, more capable, and studied all the latest experimental military tactics. ‘We can help! Why aren’t they utilizing us?’
You can’t sleep. Students made makeshift beds out of old gym mats and curtains. You try to sleep, you try, you really try. You check your phone one last time, still awake, listening to your classmates snore, remembering him…
-
“This is disgusting.”
“It’s moonshine.”
“Kim Namjoon, you did not just let me drink this sewer water you and your friends concocted.”
“Hey! Hobi made it. He’s a genius when it comes to chemistry. It’s good!”
“It tastes like battery acid,” you grimace, taking another sip.
Namjook tsks, “So dramatic, I’ll just take it back then.”
You would shove him if you weren’t both sitting high above the ground, hidden in one of the school’s Gingkos. So you glare at him instead. You sit on a branch together, he says it’s so he can make sure you don’t fall, but you knew out of the two of you, your sense of balance was exceptional, and his, well, it was good if you didn’t count the times he managed to trip over his own feet.
“We should go back down, lunch is almost over.” You raise yourself up standing, arms stretched out gripping a higher branch as you move the length of the bough.
“You know, you should come sit with me and my friends for lunch,” Namjoon says. You hum, walking back and forth along the branch. He stands up too, leaning against the trunk. “Come here.”
“It’s better for your reputation if we don’t.”
“I don’t care about things like that.”
“You should care if you want first in class.”
“Maybe I don’t want it.”
You flick him in the forehead, leaning against him. “Don’t say that. I wish I had that option.” You look up, into his eyes, noticing the way his jaw clenches. He’s tense. He looks down at you, contemplating his words, you already know what he’s going to say. You don’t want to hear it, placations and reassurances, that’s not what you want from him. You want Namjoon to kiss you instead.
Kissing Namjoon, getting lost in his rough affection, forgetting everything else, this was easier than talking things out and bringing up each other’s pasts. He already knew yours, and you already knew his. Exceptional at birth, scouted to represent the nation, never asked what he wanted, Namjoon was meant for greatness whether he liked it or not.
Greatness, greatness was something you had always wished for, because greatness meant adoration, respect, maybe even love. You wished for it desperately when you were young and hopeful, when you still wanted approval from your father. Now your dreams were all but reduced to whispers in your consciousness, panging reminders of the childhood you endured. Namjoon knew, he practically grew up at The Academy too, watched the shift in the way you regarded your father, so when you kissed him hard to silence whatever words he was going to speak, he kissed you back harder, and let you use him to forget.
---
You hear screaming. It’s loud enough to wake others. You immediately think of the worst. But no, those screams are higher pitched, too unlike Namjoon’s voice. You hear a familiar voice call out through the makeshift barracks, “Where’s Hoseok? Have you seen Hoseok?!”
---
The thing about these halls is you have walked them a thousand times. You know the connected alleyways, the rooms with broken locks, the windows that are easiest to open, and the ledges that can hold your weight.
You make it back to the main hall. Compared to the earlier bustling, the halls are empty, quiet, dark, ominous. So much has changed at Bangtan Academy already. The sun hasn’t hit the horizon yet, you can make it outside!
“Hey, where are you going?”
You keep your head down, keep walking, past the military vehicle that enters, and the guard that yells at you. Soldiers walk by you, but they don’t bother you, maybe they don’t know what's going on either, maybe they are too tired and have bigger problems to deal with. You walk quickly until you make it to the only road leading into The Academy.
The cars’ engines startle you as you walk alongside the highway. The retreating screeching sounds reminds you of the screaming, who could it have been? Not Namjoon, and you hoped it wasn’t Jung Hoseok either. Hoseok was a genuine person, and you appreciated genuine. You still felt guilty for wishing it had been the torment of another, no one deserves the kind of pain that such a horrible scream could produce.
You didn’t have a plan, planning was Joon’s thing, but you did have years of instinct and intuitiveness that saved you on multiple occasions from getting caught and punished by teachers, and now your intuition was telling you to run.
You take out your phone, pull up Namjoon’s number. You don’t have a pen or pencil, and you’ve never been good at memorization. But this time you have to, you must remember the ten numbers as if your life depended on it, because you’re starting to feel like it might. After reciting the numbers over and over in your head like a song, you’re confident enough to continue. You turn off your phone and chuck it in the bushes.
You walk on the road with the song in your head. The sun rises and you sing, the clouds move through the sky and you sing. The sun starts to set again and you sing.
A gas station comes into sight. You would find it strange how so many cars are lined up to get gas, but you’re starting to realize strange is something that is going to keep happening.
You make it inside the gas station, walking towards a frantic attendant with a line of people. “Psst hey, can I borrow a pen?” He throws a pen at you while helping the next angry customer.
You can feel the tense nervous energy around you. You take the pen and write the numbers large on your forearm, praying you remembered it right.
You walk through the aisles. It’s so busy, no one will notice if you swipe a couple of things. Some chips, candy bars, granola bars, a large bottle of water. You managed to find a fanny pack and a phone. You drink the water while you fill the fanny pack with food, and then hide it on a shelf behind groceries.
You wait in line, behind a mom and her son. Her purse is draped over her shoulder, she’s paying attention to her child as he whines for candy. She won’t miss a couple of bills.
“Can I have a prepaid phone card?” You smile at the overworked cashier as he rings you up. You want to ask him what’s going on, but the large line makes you decide against it. Taking your purchase, you make your way out of the store, but not before throwing the fanny pack and water bottle in your plastic bag as well.
---
“Please pick up, please please please.”
Namjoon doesn’t pick up.
You grip the phone in your hand and try to not let your anger rise. You send him a text, “It’s y/n, pick up idiot!”
You call again and on the first ring he answers.
“Oh my god, fucking finally, what the fuck Joon?”
“Where are you-”
“Where have you been?! What the hell is going on-did you find anything out? They took our rooms, and all these strange things are happening and-”
“Cadent y/l/n tell me where you are right now.”
Why does he sound like that? He doesn’t greet you with the affection you’re used to, his tone is harsh. It reminds you of your father.
“No.”
“You need to tell me now.”
“You tell me where you are.”
“I’m at the school. You need to come back right now.” His voice sounds calm but there is pain underneath his tone.
“No, I won’t.”
“Then I’ll go to you. Give me your location.” You hold the phone closer to your ear, you can hear low whispers in the background.
Your heart beats wildly. He’s your best friend, but something inside you says to run.
“No. Joon, I’m scared, please tell me you’re okay.” You confess to your friend, the seconds tick by and you wonder what kind of trap this is. You can’t stay on the phone any longer, they might be tracking your location.
The line stays silent, and then, “Your father wants to speak to you.”
“Goodbye.” You break the phone and run.
---
Uh-oh, who do you think was screaming? Let me know your theories <3
