Just a friend? (Kuroo x reader)

A/n: Wanted to use this scenario for Suna but i know i got to write with someone else :’) Also the timeline is supposed to be set during college.

You’re currently at a party with the Nekoma and Karasuno team. It was supposed to be a get together for everyone but it was no secret that it was to set up an informal match after a year of not seeing each other.

Right now, you’re sitting at a table with Suga and Yaku. You have no idea how the conversation shifted from how your coping at school to your slightly-more-than-just-friends situation with Kuroo.

You’re sitting on the side listening to the two of them discussing your ordeal. Wouldn’t be the first or last time that they bring it up. Suddenly there’s a question directed to you.

“What do you think of him?” Yaku blurts out.

“Well…,” your eyes wander to the living room to see Kageyama and Hinata tussling it out. “He’s just a friend.”

All of a sudden, you feel a warm hand with cold rings grip your neck from behind.

Before you can look to see who it is, Kuroo pulls your neck up and kisses you. But while he’s kissing you, you feel the Monster mango loco drink he was consuming moments ago go down your throat.

You pull away hissing from the gassiness of the drink.

After that happens you see Suga smiling like a madman and Yaku with his mouth agape staring in astonishment.

Kuroo leans down to get closer to your ear.

“So am i really still just a friend?” He asks in a breathy voice before breaking out into a boyish grin.

You have no idea what to make of the situation but one thing is for sure. That was totally hot.

Operation Nestled Dragon

Even before the passage of its iconic Transport Act 1947, the first Attlee ministry had been laying the groundwork for what we would today call a strategic steam reserve. Operation Nestled Dragon, which went into effect as early as December 1945, called for “at least 4,000” steam locomotives to be stored and kept in constant readiness in the event of “any cataclysm which could strain supply.” This was a somewhat arbitrary number; the LMS alone had 8,000 locomotives on the eve of Nationalization. It was believed that a majority of the country’s engines would survive attack during a wartime scenario, the most likely reason to activate the reserve at the time. 4,000 engines kept as a backup to unscathed stock was deemed sufficient. (It has to be said there were no strategic reserves of coaches or trucks, whether planned or even merely discussed!)

These engines and the necessary facilities would be dispersed as needed throughout the country. Bigger towns would have more engines and more MPDs (motive power depots) allocated to them, London having the most. The number of engines kept in a single “strategic MPD” was always limited to 20. In this way, an attack such as an aerial bombardment would be less likely to take out a population center’s entire locomotive stud at once.

To “activate” the reserve, the Minister of Transport was required to approach the Prime Minister and his Cabinet, and a vote be held on the matter.

Strategic MPDs could be crude or elaborate. By design they were severed from the nearest railway, so that no tracks were visible for any overcurious trespasser, potential spies or reconnaissance aircraft to follow. Every MPD had to be able to have these missing rails laid back in “within or under three hours” if called upon. Often, abandoned mines and tunnels were used and their insides fitted out. These ‘naturally-occurring’ locations were codenamed “dragon’s lairs.” Other times a location had to be built from scratch; these artificial MPDs were codenamed “rabbitholes.” Always was there emphasis on keeping the MPDs dry, ventilated and fireproof. Each MPD needed a turntable, a reliable water supply, coal bunkers, storage space for rails, sleepers, a small number of spare parts, adequate headroom and an overhead crane for heavy repairs like boiler swaps, and of course bunks for crews should the reserve be activated and they be based there. Otherwise bunkrooms were vacant, although men on duty for maintenance of stock and depots did find use for them during their shifts.

There was little methodology in place for which engine classes were preferred for the reserve. Great Western engines were less favored as they were built to run on high-quality South Welsh coal, and it was assumed the quality of coal sourced during a crisis would be poor. In any event however, some still “found their way in.” In general however, Eastern, Midland and ex-WD locos formed the majority of the workforce. Every engine belonging to the various military railways such as that at Longmoor were considered part of the reserve too, so it could be said that several pieces of the reserve’s stock were out in the open all along. Also joining their ranks as they came about were BR Standard classes, some built specifically for the reserve. These had neither BR nor serial numbers, being built “off the books.”

At first, engines reserved were simply stored and maintained in the livery they wore at the time of their “reassignment.” As time went on, (and their maintainers became bored,) a semi-official livery of black with white and navy blue stripes was settled upon and applied, one engine at a time. Quickly a crest for the Strategic Reserve was designed by one anonymous artistic crewman, and the reserve’s motto agreed: “Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit,” a superstitious British phrase.

Attlee and Churchill were both said to have toured a strategic MPD at least once. “Here we are in the belly of the beast. You lot have done some splendid work; Britain thanks you,” Attlee had said on his visit. “Men will do anything to play trains away from the wife without interrogation,” Churchill remarked on his, perhaps half in jest.

Thus was the system. As steam on the public or “civilian” British Railways was phased out, further freshly withdrawn engines were added to the reserve stocklist. Much speculation was made as to why coal bunkers and hoppers and water towers continued to be maintained even as the steam engines finally vanished from the national network in August 1968. This was explained away as infrastructure left in place for railtours by preserved engines, and in hindsight must have sounded ridiculous.

As generations of enginemen retired, they had to pass on their skills to the fresh blood. The years then went by without significant cause for alarm. The closest the reserve came to being activated was at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis in late October 1962; declassified materials confirm that as many as half of the reserve was in full steam awaiting the call, and track gangs were ready and waiting to lay in rails. The crisis ebbed of course, and by the second week of November, the number of engines idle was back to “Normal.”

Margaret Thatcher’s Government planned to shut the program down, but this was averted… just. John Major however couldn’t be dissuaded. Privatization was in full swing, and the Soviet Union had dissolved itself. The reserve suddenly seemed very redundant, (but per its own 1945 definition, not completely,) and the winding down of it all began. On the 1st of December 1998, some 53 years after the beginning of Operation Nestled Dragon, all 4,855 locomotives and their associated depots and crews were demobilized by the Blair ministry and most of the reserve’s documentation declassified. Everything became public knowledge, including the engines themselves, quite literally overnight.

At once, the locos and their facilities were up for auction. Dozens of Strategic MPDs were made into living museums demonstrating how the reserve worked. Many of the engines belonged to classes otherwise thought extinct, such as the LNER Thompson L1s and the LMS Garratts, and here were surviving specimens being pulled out of the metaphorical wardrobe like nothing. The British preservation scene was in a matter of hours awash in perfectly functional engines no one expected to still exist, which coupled together in a line were longer than most if not all of the railways themselves! Several also were sold abroad to the United States and Canada.

The public couldn’t be blamed for this all being such a shock. They hadn’t been prepared.

Their predecessors however certainly were.

haters gon say it's fake but jimin would 100% main popeyes like catch him getting a 3pc chicken combo dark meat only 🤪 and he'd drizzle honey and hot sauce on the chicken either that or the 5 pc strips with the sweet heat sauce if he's feeling a sense of childlike wonder every other month he goes through a weeklong spicy chicken sandwich phase always drinks sweet tea exclusively

jin would swear by chickfila and i can't blame him! like the consistency is always there in the food and the service and that's just what he needs in life like my man has high standards and they just don't disappoint when it comes to the food i can see him getting the grilled chicken club sandwich with a side salad as his go to meal, the regular deluxe sandwich when he's feeling indulgent, and the 30ct nugget when he's feeling ravenous. whenever there's a seasonal shake he has to try it at least once otherwise it's him and the diet lemonade against the world

joonie is giving cookout like there's just so much variety if he want a burger they got it, barbecue they got it, chicken quesadilla, hot dog, corn dog, chili cheese fries, just.... all his wants and needs would be at cookout and when he's feeling a sweet treat??? boom they got the best milkshakes in town. i think his go to meal would be a big double burger tray with a chicken wrap and onion rings for the sides and he got to have cheerwine for the drink mhm iktr

it pains me to say it but i can really see tae up at 2am getting a deluxe cravings box from taco bell like i personally can't stand taco bell it just ain't for me like don't get me wrong there's been times when i worked overnight and it was bought for me so i ate it but i wouldn't choose it but i think tae would 😭🙏 like it's more convenient than chipotle bc it's open later and has a drive through so it's conducive with his lifestyle so that's where he's at in the parking lot at 2:30 with a crunchwrap supreme a doritos locos taco and a baja blast sigh

jungkook would LOVE wawa like i don't think you understand how many times i've imagined going to wawa with jk especially after seeing his camping vlog and there was one point where he was eating a sandwich and he was like if he could eat any food for the rest of his life it'd be a sandwich and it was at that moment that i knew me him and wawa would be written in the stars like catch us at 11pm getting an italian sub some takis and a blueberry pomegranate smoothie

Traintober 2023: Revolutionary (The 1950 AFULE/ARU (Victorian Chapter) Strike, part 2

What The Engines Said

(Wholly fictional scenario of what I imagine happened if the engines at North Melbourne Loco were sentient)

North Melbourne Loco Sheds was achatter with the rumors of a strike by the human enginemen running wild in the yard.

In the evening, the locos were being shedded and the rumors were seemingly being validated with talk among the drivers... who's locos then passed this talk on to everyone else.

"Fireman says we might go on strike... whatever that means..."

"A strike! How exiting!"

"Does this mean we are getting smacked in the face?"

"No, you dummy! It means the enginemen are going to stop working a while!"

"Jeez, a strike... we finally get a break when the human drivers demand something...", grumbled the Norf yard shunter, E 236 "Hercules", a little tank engine.

"Oh do be serious, Hercules... we have no idea what this could mean", intoned S302 Edward Henty, the S-class Pacific, from his special berth.

"Yes we bloody do! It means we all get a rest! I've been run off me wheels since the bloody War ended..."

"He's right!" barked Pluto, A2 986, "We've been running ragged since the war, me cylinders are coming apart..."

"I need an farkin' overhaul..." grumbled Heavy Harry, who coughed painfully and spat a wad of ashy, clumpy black spittle, "They've been a bit stingy on the maintenance..."

"Me axelboxes didn't get looked a when I complained about it! What gives!?" rejoined X29, who had a name but everyone called him "Boofhead".

"Me smoke deflectors are about to fall off.. no one wants to tighten me nuts! Don't even get me started on me boiler tubes!" shouted another loco.

The shed was filled with the sounds of complaint from the locos, until a driver appeared in the middle of the round house.

"Quiet!"

"I'm sure you heard a lot of things... well, I've been sent to tell you that from midnight... there will be a total strike.., no passenger or goods trains are to be pulled until further notice!"

A ripple of amazement went through the locos in the shed.

"Can more frequent maintenance be put on the list of demands?" wheezed Harry.

"It is part of our rationale for the strike already, Harry... you don't need to worry about that..."

"What of the Progress sir?" asked Edward Henty.

"Cancelled, old boy. You could all do with a rest...".

"What of the other sheds?"

"They will be notified in due course... but you heard it from me first... we can trust you for your support, yes?"

More murmurings...

"Whats to stop scabs from climbin' in us?" asked Pluto.

"You're all clever dicks, you can figure it out... lest your tiny little minds blow a fus..."

"Ooooh.... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...", a chorus of rising engine voices.

"Have a good night, we will let you know if the situation changes..." said the driver and walked out.

"So, what do we do?" asked Boofhead.

"I reckon we just sleep, would love a bit of sleep..." chuckled Hercules.

"How long do you reckon it will last, sir?" asked Harry.

"I dare say not that long... the Commissioner can't be that stubborn" said Edward Henty.

"Ah phooey! Of all the things... you reckon they'll listen to the drivers... they'd sooner replace us all with bloody exploding zeppelins than give an inch...", barked Pluto.

"Let the striking drivers and firemen do their work and we'll see..." said Edward Henty.

The shed fell silent, as the assorted big and little engines drowsed off.

The strike was to go on for 55 days... but those are stories for another day.

thoughts on cgi episodes of ttte? I'm curious to hear whatever praises or criticisms you have for that era of the series

Apologies for the delay, I started this but felt it was too Stream-of-Consciousness to be worth publishing. After a virtual pair of scissors it's much better but it's not one of my best metas. Still, I sure have Thoughts! So if you happen upon this month late answer, enjoy~

I think, much like the model series, it's quite the mixed bag... but even at its best None of the CGI episodes or specials reach the early pinnacle set by Seasons 1 and 2.

I'm famously[?] s3 Critical but I'm much more likely to wanna watch one'a the episodes where David Mitton was director than anything CGI (...depending on the episode lmao, some are nuclear waste as early as 3 and a lot in 6 lmaooo) -- that's in part due to my immense fondness and respect for the scale models and practical effects.

This ain't me ragging on CGI, but it is me saying that for Thomas the live action Supermarionation style works best for it. The CGI itself allows for things that wouldn't be possible [or finacially sensible], and that's good! But I feel like it became a crutch for the series to continue spinning wheels without covering new track, y'see?

Like, the Engines as models are still limited in some of the same ways irl Steam Locos are - they have to have track to run on, there's an upper limit for the rakes they pull, you can't bash them into walls without heavy damage, things like that. This also helped inform the post-Awdry stories they ran, it's the kind of limitation that makes writing more robust.

This doesn't make it immune to running out of ideas, of course, but it's a reliable guideline. The model series very much running out of plots is why I don't watch any post season 7!

With CGI there's an "all bets are off" aspect where they could use it for more complex settings, scenarios and characters. But a rot still started to creep in and hit the nadir with BWBA, where they just do whatever a weird ass mandate insists upon.

There's also the moving faces debate, I suppose. CGI letting them lip sync and giving them individual voices was another big game changer. But was it needed? The books lend themselves so well to the Narrator style (when it's someone like Ringo, even better hahaha), but the more distinct voices there are, the more room there is for something to sound ...off.

So let's sum up some CGI pros:

Increased possibility of complex designs, mechanisms and scenery

Episodes should be easier to produce and more effort could go into other areas

If lucky, the voice acting will be good

And some cons:

The majority of the CGI is still pretty daggy looking, and bad CGI ages it much more than seeing the edge of a physical set

The episodes either don't do much interesting with the freedom, or go too far and do stupid shit like an action movie bridge jump or the whole engine rocking back and forth like a kiddie ride when they talk

The voice acting isn't well suited to the stories... or it ain't good at all!

I mean it genuinely when I say not only is 2D Animation better for a less-realistic version of Thomas, but AEG actually going as balls to the wall is an improvement over the dying thrashes of BWBA. The CGI shoulda held itself to more realism, but didn't, but at least Very Cartoony Trains having extendable spider limbs is more consistant with itself.

...In summation, I am Not A Fan of CGI Thomas. Which is why I limit my input of CGI eps, honestly! I ain't saying everything about it sucks, but the collective whole of it isn't good enough to keep me watching.

Red vs. Blue seasons 15-17 retcon pros and cons:

Season 15

I actually don’t mind season 15 so much so it’s a pretty even split between things I’m glad to see go and stuff I’ll be sad about

Pros:

No more Jax (just don’t care for him personally)

Vic is still alive!!

Not dealing with all the film making jokes. A few of them were funny but overall they were just kinda annoying

The implication that Church thinks that Grif and Simmons would have sex in a closet

The emotional gut punch that is all of this being a simulation by church meaning he created a scenario where his friends grieve him and at the slightest hope of him being alive they immediately jump at the chance to save him

This makes Grif quitting even more painful

Tucker no longer has a ton of kids (I just personally never really liked this joke)

Not dealing with the way Sarge’s character was done dirty. This is not the same man who gave several of the best speeches in the whole series.

A bunch of Freelancers are alive again

No seriously Vic is still alive and I’m a big believer in the “Vic was the love fragment” theory IM JUST SAYING

Praying the animation is better than this in the final season 💀

Seriously Sarge is done so dirty. Everyone wants to say red team never got development till now but I disagree. Sarge easily has some of the best character development in the series, it’s just done much more subtly than any of blue teams development.

Loco is not dead

I actually don’t care for the whole bit with Caboose saying goodbye to Church. I like the sentiment of the lesson Caboose is learning but the whole actually seeing Church one last time thing always felt too fairytale-ish to me

VIC IS ALIVE

I just think we really need to consider both the emotional and comedic implications of all of this being Church’s simulation.

Like if Vic really was a fragment then church basically wrote himself sacrificing himself for his friends again.

Church thinks Grif, if separated from Simmons and the group, would go crazy and start talking to volleyballs

Dylan’s whole speech about what makes the reds and blues hero’s would actually be Church

Fr there’s so many implications here

Cons:

Losing the blues and reds (tho I have theories on how they might still be around)

Losing Dylan (tho she still canonically exists in universe)

Kai is back in Blood Gulch and not part of the main crew :(

Just the absolute loss that is the entire episode of the reds and blues introduction in this season

Grif and Simmons no longer canonically had sex in a closet

Just how much Tucker cares for Caboose and the others in this season

Literally every Carolina and Wash moment

Carolina calling Wash “David”

No seriously just everything about Wash and Carolina

The whole Freelancer death room is actually a great scene (even if I do like that the freelancers would be alive again)

Actually love Temple and Biff and their story. Sad to see it go (tho again I do have a theory)

Tucker actually asking Caboose his thoughts on things

Fr the blues and reds are fascinating

Grif and Locus

Caboose learning to cope with death

Wash’s injury

Literally every Grif and Simmons scene

Grif and Kai hug

Verdict:

If everything post 13 is truly getting retconned the way it seems to be implied then I’ll actually be kinda sad to see this season go. It’s not bad! Could’ve definitely been a lot better but it had quite a bit of potential and some strong ideas and moments. Evil sim troopers is a fascinating idea and I wish they would’ve explored it more thoroughly.

Junior Eurovision 2023 detailed opinions before the show. Part 3

After two parts of my Junior Eurovision 2023 personal opinions before the show, it was time for the third one. We already covered the fifth, fourth and third tiers of my list, from the decent songs to my personal tear-jerkers. And now, with the reveal of the running order this day, and 8 songs to talk about, it's time for the second tier, where my almost-winner alert songs are. And by little differences with the winner ones.

The tier-list for reference, again!

Tier 2: "I will kill OsterdahlEBU if they mess with the staging or the running order (or place the lower spots)/hj"

🇲🇹 Yulan Law "Stronger"

Malta is one of those countries that can make Junior Eurovision a real party. Two victories, one of them also slaying in the adult Eurovision (Destiny, in JESC 2015 and ESC 2021), and with most entries being bangers. After the robbery Gaia Gambuzza got in Yerevan at 2022 (and this year in adult Eurovision, Switzerland's 2nd Gjon's Tears copycat getting the final qualifier and not the happy lads from The Busker...), I was expecting a MIRACLE for them to have some justice this year. And it came in the shape of "Stronger"

Yulan's voice, my gosh, serving in higher levels than I ever expected for a ballad, and after hearing some of them before this song got revealed, I'm glad to put her in this tier! Her lyrics are so charming alongside her vocals, and the music itself elevates the entire song to a higher level of the previous ballads I covered. The setting of the clip, while not my favorite, it's so calm and inspiring as the entry itself. And you tell me this song was composed by some Swedish writers? No wonder it slays a lot.

I have no ideas about how would be her perfect staging for the live show, but if it can convey the same feelings of the entire song, maybe it can be a well-done Top placer, even if performing second!

🇲🇰 Tamara Grujeska "Kaži Mi, Kaži Mi Koj"

For North Macedonia, I was accepting anything at the point the song was revealed. They like to vary in their JESC song styles, from 2021's bop about saving the planet to protect it as our only home, to 2022's definition of, citing one of my close mutuals, "Shut TF off, I'm not your girlfriend!" (and fun fact I discovered recently thanks to Misja Eurowizja, the same writer of that song was also the composer of Hurricane's "Loco Loco" (Serbia 2021, Eurovision). A lively "the same voice" meme incarnation XDXD). But the song they sent for JESC 2023 is something amazing, something I've never expected

For a soft ballad-pop, it has some charm itself! The use of the ethnical instruments gives it more originality about the country itself, and it sounds so good with the melody. Even if not understanding the lyrics at first (without English translation, of course), Tamara's voice makes them so hypnotic and mesmerizing, one thing I LOVE of this song more than other ballads! And as for the video, they took the "smoke firework" theme from the slogan (and the "Heroes" theme) seriously to the point of incorporating it in the choreo.

The staging of this one can be (or not) linked to the studio video's scenario, but whichever idea it is, it has to be something enough to not ruin this song's feelings!

🇺🇦 Anastasia Dymyd "Kvitka"

I'm sorry for those of the ESC Discord server who have to watch me put this song in the higher places instead of lower ones. Yes, I understand there were better options in the Junior Vidbir like Polina Babiy's "Universe" or Denis Hryshchuk's "Dance", but somehow this song grew on me a lot after some listens. And after Zlata Dziunka's heart-breaking (and no joking about my feelings of that song T-T) yet beautiful song "Nezlamna" last year, I kinda felt a soft breeze of hope with this entry.

Sure, I agree with them it becomes kinda repetitive with the "Kvitka" verse playing constantly in the chorus, but the feeling is what counts here! Anastasia's sweet and kind voice, alongside the "Find yourself in this world, and stop this tragedy" verse, highlight this hopeful feeling I got in the song. And as the song says, one day something can blossom from the rubbles of chaos and give a future. I never thought I would become attached to a JESC entry so much(well, and the next one I will cover), even if not being my winner alert!

Knowing she performs third, after Yulan Law and Sandra Valero, while the Vidbir staging makes the song get more cheerful than it is already, they need to make it bigger and more beautiful for Nice's stage if they want Anastasia to not place low, shine among the other kids and get some good televote, because she deserves it a lot!

🇩🇪 Fia "Ohne Worte"

Germany had it difficult both in the adult and the Junior versions of Eurovision. If it's not Jendrik Sigwart, Malik Harris or fricking Lord of the Lost getting the last places in their editions (unfairly in the last case), zero points or not, it's their two Junior singers at 2020 and 2021, Susan and Pauline, starting the show and getting the lowest (if not last) places too. And when I heard they would try again this year after a rest in 2022, I knew I had to follow the selections to see who would be their hope.

For the five kids that showed in the selections, there were three I expected to get the place: Adriano with a good moving song "Be My Girl", Rahel with a Sara James-like melody "Believe", and of course, the song that won over them (and my heart) and now is the German representant for Nice: Fia with "Ohne Worte" (without words)

First, I gotta admit it, I'm BIASED with this song since the demo version (and as the first JESC 2023 song in progress), and there are some teeny weeny differences that place it not in my winner alert list. But it's for some good reasons!

I was surprised she decided to use sign language for her entry, and I wondered exactly why she did it. And after knowing the context and some of her before-JESC performances in The Voice using the same technique, she caught my heart.

Those performances, and the JESC song itself are for (and about) her little sister Emilia, the person that inspired Fia to do this special detail never seen in a Junior song, and something that makes this entry so relatable. If the demo version was alerting me with speakers I would get emotional over the entire song, it became true after the video (and full studio version) reveal (once again in the middle of work). And the final verses of the "without words" in multiple languages, that part made me love this song more than I already did, alongside the more-than-just-sweet videoclip :'3

The tier title was especially created for this one song, considering the past editions Germany had to struggle in Junior and adult Eurovision. And while at least they FINALLY have a decent running order slot, I'm still waiting for the staging to make this song more justice than it has already. There are rumours about a dance-break section for the live version and I hope, REALLY, REALLY HOPE, that it makes Fia get a Top 3 placement as she deserves it, and maybe WIN THE CONTEST (even above the next 4 songs I consider winners). I know, it's biased, but now you know why. But the thing I WOULD DREAD from all scenarios is that, even with the best made, somehow Germany gets last or lower places. That would break me a lot if that ever happens and I will get Osterdahl's head ;m;
