[Oahu Trip Recap] Day 2 - 10/7/21 | Sunrise Lanikai Pillbox Hike and Kayaking

We woke up super early to do the Pillbox hike in Lanikai to catch the sunrise. There is no parking allowed in Lanikai right now from 8:30AM to 4:00PM. But since we started so early, we were able to easily find parking close to the trailhead. I recommend bring a headlamp or flashlight - We started the hike when it was still dark out but as we kept going, it did get brighter. It is an intense hike with many steep parts. But the views were so worth it.

After our hike, we treated ourselves to some malasadas from Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop. It's a food truck located in a small parking lot. They were fresh, hot, and so fluffy!

It was in this little parking lot that we saw the first rainbow of our trip!

For breakfast, we went to Boot's and Kimo's. They opened at 8AM, so we arrived a bit early but were first in line! As soon as 8AM hit, lots of people came out from their cars to line up. So be sure to get there early.

My boyfriend and I shared their famous banana and macadamia nut cream pancakes and the Shrimp Alfredo omelette. Both dishes were delicious. The pancakes comes in 2 sizes, short stack (2 pancakes) or tall (3). We got the tall and could barely finished it. I was really sad we couldn't take it to go since we were gonna be out all day.

After breakfast, we had reservations for a kayak rental from Two Good Kayaks. We were planning to kayak to the Mokolua Islands off of Lanikai beach but the winds were really strong that day. The lady at the shop did not recommend us to do it since we are inexperienced kayakers. She did provide several alternate locations for us which was super helpful. We ended up taking our kayak up the east coast to Kahana bay where you can kayak in the ocean for a bit and it goes into a river surrounded by trees. It was a nice way to still get some ocean kayaking without the major arm workout. The lady at the shop also suggested kayaking to Chinaman's hat (second image below), so we stopped by but deemed the winds were still too strong there.

We returned our kayak and headed for Lanikai beach. Since there is no parking currently allowed in the surrounding neighborhood, we parked at the Kailua boat loading parking lot and walked about 10 minutes over to Lanikai. Kailua beach is just as nice with much easier access, but I wanted to see the two islands as I swam in the water haha. The sand was also a lot softer over at Lanikai. :)

For dinner, we got Zippy's! I got the "Zip Pac" and omg I loved it so much. Each item was way better than what I expected from a chain restaurant. Even the pre-packaged tartar sauce was amazing. I would even say this was one of the top meals I had during this trip.

My boyfriend got the Chili Loco Moco and it's a hefty meal. If you like chili, you’ll love this meal.

We wanted to go to Tantalus Lookout after dinner to see the city night view, but had gotten to the gate 15 minutes too late. They closed at 6:45PM (even though we read online it was at 7:45PM). Hours probably changed as it gets darker earlier these days. Although we couldn't go to the lookout point, we pulled over to the side at a turnout on the way down and still got a pretty awesome view.

We returned to the hotel and I proceeded to knock out by 8PM and would not wake up until 6AM the next morning... Onward to the next day!

It is the Bay Area after all - and we have some pretty incredible ones (Taqueria Cancún, El Farolito, La Taqueria, La Santa Torta, El Gran Taco Loco, we see you). But if you want to add something new to your mix, we also have this guide. It has all the new(ish) taco spots that have opened in the last year or two in SF, Oakland, and other nearby cities, open for takeout, delivery, or dine-in.

The pink taco truck has been a staple at pop-ups and food events around the Bay Area for two years. But Al Pastor Papi earns a spot on this list thanks to their quesadobo tacos, which recently debuted at Speakeasy taproom in Bayview-Hunter’s Point. The taco comes with a juicy, tangy adobo, melted cheese, chicharrones, calamansi slaw, and a side of vinegary consomé. If they’re sold out, don’t stress. Just order their delicious vampiro tacos with al pastor or asada.

Los Guisados is from the same folks behind our other favorite new taco spot, Tacos El Patrón in the Mission. And that fact alone makes Los Guisados worth checking out. Another reason you’ll want to book it to the corner of 17th Street and South Van Ness Avenue: everything is really, really good. They specialize in tacos de guisados, which are made with juicy stewed pollo, res, puerco, mariscos, or vegetables. On a recent visit, we had the pollo con mole, picadillo, and chile verde, all of which were fantastic. The only downside is for those who are decision-averse - this place has over 20 guisados to choose from.

La Grana Fish $$$$ 952 Fruitvale Ave

La Grana Fish has been around since 2018, and this food truck recently found a new home at The Aloha Club in Oakland’s Fruitvale, complete with plenty of picnic tables and outdoor seating. And if you’re in search of a great fish taco (we always are), get here now. They’re light and crispy, and feature a red onion slaw and a mild chipotle aioli. But if fish tacos aren’t your scene, they also have vampiro tacos, tostadas, and a fantastic quesabirria, which you can get filled with nearly any type of meat.

There’s been a ton of hype around Tacos El Patrón, and for good reason: Their quesabirria tacos are some of the best in the city. They’re also some of the meatiest, and are stuffed with cheese, onions, and cilantro, and covered with a thick layer of cheese. So get your nap bed ready. Nothing productive will happen after having two or three of these. If you’re in the East Bay, head to their original location in Pleasant Hill, which is also doing takeout and delivery.

The folks behind the Bay Area mini mole empire, Los Moles, opened a new spot in Albany called 5 Tacos & Beer. If you couldn’t deduce from the name, the restaurant features a frequently-changing menu with five kinds of tacos (like cochinita pibil, pollo con mole, or rib-eye), and plenty of beer. If you want to try them all, you can get five for $21.50, or 10 for $42.25. Order one and a side of handmade corn tortilla chips with guacamole for takeout, or enjoy it all with live music on their sidewalk patio.

Miguelito’s $$$$ 2000 Hyde St

Miguelito’s is a Mexican pop-up that’s been operating out of Abrazo in Russian Hill since May. Their street tacos come with carne asada, chicken, or carnitas, and are topped with cotija, pickled onions, and crema. They’re good, but the charred octopus taco with potato, citrus slaw, and a tasty chorizo aioli is what keeps us coming back. They’re open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 3pm, and Thursday to Saturday from 5-8pm.

Tacorea $$$$ 620 Broadway

Tacorea opened a second location in Chinatown in August. And checking out their new spot is a good excuse to try their excellent Mexican-Korean dishes. The kimchi burrito with spicy pork will always be our Tacorea standby, but we also recommend the carnitas or the Kanye asada tacos. Tacorea is open for takeout, and recently started offering delivery.

At this point, it should be very clear that we at the Infatuation SF love quesabirria. And the one we want all day, every day is at El Garage. They recently opened a new brick-and-mortar in Richmond, and are serving three quesabirria tacos for $12 or three birria tacos for $9. Since we also love spicy things, we always order it with a side of pickled habanero. To limit crowds, El Garage is asking everyone to pre-order online. You can do so starting on Wednesday for pick-up on Friday through Sunday.
