The King's Men - Chapter Sixteen (18)

Day: Friday, April 5th / 6th* Time: 9:48 PM PST

"Is it over?" Neil's backliner mark gasps out. "Oh, thank god." Neil looks over at Alvarez and is floored to see her smiling. She thrusts a gloved hand his way even as her legs wobble and give out. Neil catches her somehow and helps haul her back to her feet. She props herself against him and scrabbles ineffectually at the straps on her helmet. It takes her a few tries before she realizes her fingers are too numb to manage it. She gives up and taps her helmet against his instead. "Is this what dying feels like?" she asks, and calls over her shoulder, "Babe, I think I'm dying. Do I still have legs? I can't look down. I don't think I have legs. I don't think I'll ever walk again." "Uh-huh," Laila says, trotting over to them. "You'd better figure something out, because you're definitely too heavy for me to carry off this court." "Rude." Alvarez gropes blindly for Laila's shoulder until Laila hooks an arm around her waist and pulls her off Neil. Alvarez is still smiling, that half-crazy too-wide look that reminds Neil a little of Lola and a little of Nicky. Neil tries to remember if she'd been hit in the head at any point tonight but the Foxes had kept the violence within excusable limits. It seemed only fair considering what good sports the Trojans are. "That was fantastic," Alvarez says. "I want to do it again. Next year, maybe, when my legs grow back." "Stop being such a baby," Laila says. "Ignore her," Alvarez says to Neil. "She's just sour because she lost nine goals in forty-five minutes. Don't know why, not like it's a new personal record or—ohhh, it is. Ouch, that's gotta sting a bit. So much for being first-draft." "Bitch," Laila says without any heat. "That's what you get for calling me fat," Alvarez says. She looks back at Neil and gestures past him. "Oops, looks like the party started without you. Go, go, go!" Neil looks over his shoulder to see the Foxes celebrating on the half- court line. He starts to turn toward them, then looks back at Alvarez and Laila. "Your team is terrifying," he says, inspired by Alvarez's enthusiasm to be honest. "We'll be cheering for you next week." Alvarez flashes a thumbs-up, so Neil jogs to meet his team. He hears Alvarez ask how anyone can still run after "the world's longest game", but he figures it is directed at Laila and doesn't slow to hear the answer.

My Raven Cycle dust jackets from @ouijacine arrived today!! I've been looking forward to these for so long, I snapped them up as soon as they went on sale!

They're so gorgeous, and they look perfect next to the AFTG jackets too! Yes, I did have to buy a new set of paperbacks, since I only have the Raven Cycle in hardback, but it was totally worth it.

(It's possible I have too many copies of AFTG, btw. Is it possible to have too many copies of AFTG?)

What's a book that lives rent-free in your head?

I have surprisingly only read The Song of Achilles once, but it's stuck with me. Sometimes, I wonder if it's the books themselves that stick with me or the feelings I had while reading them that makes them stick in my brain. Especially because most of my book recs are purely based on ✨️vibes✨️.

The King's Men - Chapter Sixteen (18)

Day: Friday, April 12th / 13th* Time: 9:55 PM EST

Jeremy takes the loss well in his post-game interview and expresses no regrets for how things had turned out. He sidesteps every opportunity to call the Ravens out on their ugly playing style but perks up when attention is drawn to how close they'd been to a win. "We almost had it, right?" Jeremy says. "I don't think anyone was expecting us to get that close. It feels really different out there without Kevin and Jean on the line." "Worst time of year for someone to be injured," the reporter agrees. Tetsuji had announced earlier in the week that Jean was off the court with a bad sprain. "Rumor has it Jean won't make it back in time for finals." "Yeah, I spoke to Jean earlier this week. He's definitely done for the year, but he'll be back in the fall. He just won't be back in black." Jeremy flashes his toothy grin and doesn't wait to be asked to explain. "Yesterday he faxed us over the last of the paperwork we needed to make this thing official, so I'm allowed to tell you: he's transferring to USC for his senior year." "Let me make sure I heard you correctly," the reporter says. "Jean Moreau is leaving Edgar Allan for USC?" "We ordered his gear this morning," Jeremy says. "We'll have to get him some sun this summer, though! He's a little pale to pull off red and gold right now." He laughs like this news isn't going to cause an uproar with Edgar Allan's rabid fans. "Unfortunately his number was taken already, but Jean said we can reassign him to whatever's open. I'll let him tell you what his new one is going to be." "Can you tell us why he's transferring?" "I can't get into all the details because it's not my place to tell his personal business, but I can say we're excited to have him. I think we have a lot to learn from each other. Next year is going to be amazing. I think you're going to see a lot of changes across the board. We've all got to take another look at what we bring to the court."

I've waited an age for these AFTG designs by @llstarcasterll to come back in stock! Honestly, I could have spent four times the amount in this shop - I really had to rein myself in!

I got the famous alternate dust jackets, which look so, so good on my shelf; and I finally got my hands on the "Pipe Dream" fanzine!! It's a good job the artwork isn't all available as prints, I think I'd end up papering my walls with them!

And I got the sticker sheet and the sticker pack! I'm always so hesitant to use really nice stickers, because I want to keep them forever - so I've decided to immortalise some of these in resin! I've bought some DIY resin phone cases and some other AFTG stickers from etsy and redbubble, so watch this space! I've never tried anything like this before but I think they'll look really good!

I've dabbled with supporting artists on ko-fi as well as patr*on. I never subscribe for long because it's not always financially feasible, but I love getting exclusive art when I can.
