Talk shop Tuesday! How do you create balance in your writing between building scenes, action, dialogue, etc.?

Ooh, what a wonderful question. I wish I knew that answer 😅

No, but I think my two biggest strengths are world building and dialogue. I am very, very bad at action, to the point where I have regularly joked about "Kevin Smithing" the action off screen, while two characters talk about it on screen.

So, for me, what I find that I do is write out a bunch of exposition as I'm building a scene/set up/conceit. And then I'll go back and see where I can break it up with action, so that it isn't just word-of-god-info-dumping, but we're seeing some thoughts or experience as something is happening.

The same goes for dialogue heavy scenes. Sometimes, a scene for me is just two characters talking, and then I'll have to go back and add info about where they are and what else is happening during the conversation.

It's a very first pass, then second pass situation a lot of the time. I also then always go back and make sure that everything connects in some way. Sometimes, that means re-writing a scene to include some new element that I found myself unexpectedly introducing later in the fic. Two example of this would be Stiles' car keys in Stuck Between Stations and Peter's feeling of being "in between" in At This Truth We Have Arrived.
