what are your favourite versions of Zelda Link and Ganon? all of them can be from different games/not related (+impa too of you want?)
Very good question! There's a ton of Zeldas I like; textually, it would have to either be Spirit Tracks or BotW Zelda --but conceptually I have a huge soft spot for OoT Zelda, who goes through so much, changes a lot, grows in ways that are so complicated and messy and self-questioning (her becoming Sheik, her relationship to her hylian duties VS her connexion to the sheikah VS her warped sense of responsabilities and the ripples of pain this ends up causing over and over across the board...)
The same could be said of Link. I really like both TP Link and WW Link I think, he's perhaps at his most empathetic and bravest in these titles; but OoT Link is such a mess and a half that I can't help but think about him and his very ambiguous fate post MM, as it's one of the only versions of Link that we see breaking down, which grants him a strange humanity he is very rarely afforded, even if only subtextually.
As far as Ganon goes, nobody would be surprised by my answer being WW Ganon, which is just staggeringly well written and compelling, granting him enough humanity to make him shine, but not so much that is drowns off his odious, self-serving crimes. To me, Nintendo never understood what makes this character better than here. But! Same as the two others: Ganondorf being one dude for most of the series' run, I love that Ganondorf package as a whole, and the way he evolves depending on whether he loses enough to develop a semblance of self-reflection in WW, or loses so much that he stops being a person altogether in TP (the actual writing in TP is a little flimsy, but as a more global character arc, ooooof oof ouchie ouchie)
And Impa.... Textually, from what I've seen, I really love her Skyward Sword incarnation, which also has the best design in my opinion. Buuuut, once again, conceptually, the OoT one just fascinates me to no ends. The understated influence that lady holds over the key player of this version of Hyrule, the way she preserved her culture through Zelda despite it being on death's door (??? why???), and also what the hell who are you woman, what do you know about that realm that you are not telling anyone, how are you at once a maternal protector that developed a fusional relationship to the princess of Light and Goodness... while also being the warden of everything dead and horrifying and rotten this kingdom refuses to acknowledge???? This is so good!!! There are so many things to be done with this contrast!!!!

LoZ - Possible Good Ganondorf
I actually think it's possible to have a good Ganondorf. Or at the very least, morally grey. Like, yes, he's cursed & would likely always have a little bit of that tendency towards a desire for power, but I also think that part of the reason he ended up so bad is the nature VS nurture thing. I feel like he could be taught not to follow those impulses if it's caught soon enough.
Thing is, 2 of the Ganondorfs that we know of were in some way associated with Kōme (fire witch & the older twin) & Kotake (ice witch & the younger twin). Them being the first Ganondorf's adopted mothers. Their second appearance (OoA/OoS) likely being the same incarnations as in OoT & their 3rd appearance in TotK at least being his captains of the guard or even his personal advisors. (Personally, I still think that they acted as his adopted mothers in TotK as their names are engraved upon the Gloom Set. And you don't just do that if someone's only your advisors or guard captains. You do that if someone is of great, personal significance to you.)
As such, I actually think that Four Swords Adventure Ganondorf & Hyrule Warriors Ganondorf were both also raised by Kōme & Kotake, though as to whether they are the same pair as in OoT or are new iterations of them is up in the air.
Add to that the fact they are specifically stated to be his adopted mothers rather than one being his actual mother while the other is his aunt, as well as specifically being evil witches who specifically practice black magic who just so happened to have raised a psychopathic, power-hungry tyrant, makes them a wee bit suspicious to me. It's also impossible for TotK Ganondorf to be either of their son, because they both have pointed ears like all the other Gerudo in TotK, but Ganon specifically does not.
Either way, I am further convinced of their ill-intent by the fact that they brainwashed any Gerudo who opposed their son's rule as well as them specifically being noted to be 400 years old & that the means by which they maintain their long life is stated to be via powerful black magic. (Note that witches in many old stories & the like are said to do this by sacrificing children to beings that they made dark pacts with in exchange for power. As to whether or not that's the case here, is unknown.)
There's also the fact that he's stated to be trained in black magic as well. Adding to that, the theories that Ganondorf's name translates to Necromancer with Ganon meaning black magic & dorf meaning sorcerer as well as the theory suggesting that practicing black magic results in a visible alteration in one's appearance, a "staining" if you will. One example being Astor from AoC, who is depicted with unhealthy, ghostly pale skin not unlike that of a corpse. If true, then it would explain why Kōme & Kotake are depicted as having the same greenish complexion as Ganondorf. It's simply visual evidence that a Gerudo is practicing black magic. Like how working with iron without proper protection can turn your skin blue.
This would make it a sort of warning to others in a similar way to how bright colors on a frog is a warning of them being poisonous or like how Voldimort's face got all ugly, rather than being a racist indication of being evil as, this way, it would have a logical reason rather than a purely metaphysical, morally extremist one.
As for why the Kōme & Kotake of MM still have that complexion, it's possible that they once practiced black magic like their Hyrule counterparts, but have since stopped. If so, then that would indicate that the performance of such is a permanent stain. Though, that's just my personal attempt at making logical sense of it.
Like, there has to be a logical explanation besides racism because if it were racism, then all the Gerudo would look like that. The fact that only these 3 Gerudo exhibit this quality means that there is something about them that makes them different from other Gerudo in one way or another. Whether that difference is the use of black magic or something else entirely, like a skin disorder or a disease or something else is to be determined, but it's highly likely to be black magic just based on the evidence.
It's also possible that Kōme & Kotake might be worshippers of Demise, or some other evil entity, who know about the curse & actively go out to find Ganondorf whenever he's born, specifically to raise him into a proper vessel of Demise's hatred just to loose him on Hyrule.
As to why we never hear anything about Ganon's birth parents, maybe he was left in the desert like how Hagar intended to do to Ishmael? Or, Ganon was kidnapped. Hell, Kōme & Kotake could've even killed them in order to get Ganondorf.
If true, then it's possible that Ganondorf is a victim of child abuse, grooming, & even a subject of trauma bonding, which would definitely mess a person up.
If nothing else, then Kōme & Kotake are at the very least effing racist, because where else would he learn to specifically hate Hyrule & want to conquer it? I get it, cursed, but still!
At the time of OoT, Faron was likely mostly uninhabited beyond the possibly ancestors of the Lurelinites & the descendants of the Kikwi, & probably wasn't even considered part of Hyrule yet, not to mention the area is lush with vegetation. Why not settle there & claim it for themselves if he was really so concerned about his how harsh the desert was on his people?
Which, BTW, humans have managed to not just survive, but thrive, in the desert for 5,000+ years IRL, you're telling me that these people obviously perfectly adapted to the desert. Who are physically larger & stronger than Hylians (who themselves are very human adjacent), have not managed to figure out how to live relatively comfortably there on their own?
Not to mention, but from what I can tell, there are plenty of crops that can grow just fine in the desert. Date palms, tomatoes, corn, eggplants, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, onions, pumpkins, beans, carrots, lettuce, cabbages, radishes, wheat, squash, figs, spinach, sweet peppers, grapes, & watermelons, according to Google, can all grow in the desert! So long as they have some sort of access to these crops & a stable source of water, they should be good on food so long as famine doesn't hit.
Anyway, the solution could be as simple as killing Kōme & Kotake before they take Ganondorf, possibly saving his parents (provided they intended to kill them), or even possibly after they've done so. Afterwards, provided that at least one of his parents were still alive or they had other living relatives & they happen to not be bad influences, deliver baby Ganon to them to raise.
Either way, in such an instance, he likely wouldn't even be named Ganondorf as why would any Gerudo other than one's who actively want to go to war with Hyrule, give the one male a century the same name as the men who's been behind a majority of the Gerudo's hardships?
That's basically asking to repeat history.
Sure, tradition, but at the end of the day, traditions that only hurt need to be cut out.
---
Honestly, I've heard a lot of fans say that Demise is basically "Hyrule's Satan" which would make Ganondorf what some might call "Hyrule's Anti-Christ," but honestly, Demise ain't no more Hyrule's Satan than Loki is Norse Satan or Hades is Greece's Satan. To fit every culture's religion into the same cookie-cutter shape of Christianity is really disrespectful of the cultures themselves. Which, I understand that Hyrule ain't real, but still.
Sure, Hyrule's religion bares a surface-level resemblance to Christianity & it was originally planned that Christianity be Hyrule's official religion, but when you really examine the actual facts though, it's very much only skin deep.
However, because Hyrule's religion isn't actually Christianity, this gives fans a degree of leeway in regards to certain things.
For one, Ganondorf being forever evil. If Demise actually, legit were Hyrule's Satan & Ganondorf the Anti-Christ, then Ganondorf would be forever doomed to always be evil & never have a chance to... Change! Like, at all! Forget being good, he couldn't even be neutral!
Now, I don't think Demise can be redeemed ever. For one, he's supposed to be already gone based on Fi's words about his soul being trapped inside the sword & dissolving. If this is true, then there ain't no coming back from that.
However, Ganondorf still has a chance & Imma run with that!
Edit: The more I learn about the Japanese translation, the more I think that I might be on the right track here.
Demise himself mentioned the curse as being samsara, which means that one will continue to suffer in subsequent lives & the only way to end it is to be rid of one's Mōshū. Which prevents one from reaching enlightenment.
And... I think it's Ganondorf's Mōshū that's keeping the 3 of them from... moving on...

bc i was thinking a lot abt how differently majoras mask portrays link as a hero vs other higher selling titles like oot and totk and tp. how mm link literally needs to take the form of these other races (zora goron etc) in order to save termina, which in a way show that termina could not hv been saved if not for these deceased people of other races.. vs say oot and tp where these races are reliant on link to come over and earn their fancy jewel or whatever to save them. and how totk is especially awful with its depiction of groups of ppl with how zelda is mentioned in every city doing Something Useful bc those ppl couldnt have thought of it themselves. but also in mm does the narrative not also distinguish link as a Special Hero bc only He could save termina? what even is autonomy in a video game anyways does this mean anything. I would love to know more about 4, 24, and 26 from the ask your writer game. ☺️
Thank you, Missy!
Where do you find inspiration for new ideas?
Everywhere. Inspiration for my oot fic came to me when I read the tenth story where Link returns after the events of MM at a ball and my mind went... What happens if he doesn't? What would Zelda do? Marry Me is based on the very chaotic getting-together story of my friends, my bakery AU was kindled by my love of baking bread. Same for the stitches series, I love sewing and thought, hey, that would be perfect for whumptober. Light My Fire is inspired by being in the office after lockdown and seeing people in the building with huge glass panels across the street. Hush and several others wouldn't exist without some awesome pieces of art that would have been a shame to have no story to go with it. I also love local folklore and have several pictures saved in my ideas folder from maps in lighthouses, old legends summarized on a sign of a local museum, or pics of epic interiors of old houses. I also screenshot funny Tumblr posts like that one post with the sailboat being saved by the world's largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship, the Göteborg.
Worst writing advice anyone ever gave you?
Oh, that's a tough one. I think nearly all writing advice is good if applied to the right situation. If it's generalized, they nearly all are a trap door.
If I have to pick one, it's probably the 'use the entire thesaurus before you settle on said' thing. If you find yourself overusing 'said', the problem is not that you have to exchange said against something else. It's because your dialogue doesn't flow naturally. The trick is to cut dialogue tags down to the minimum by having the characters do something while they talk. Use their actions to underline their emotions and to make clear who's speaking (he kicked the door close vs he softly closed the door, palm lingering on the door leaf). Together with exposition and the correct dialogue tags (snap instead of say briskly, e.g.), you won't need 'said' a lot.
Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?
Like the goddess she is, mainly because of the splendid art KERTO made for it. Click at your own risk. 🤣

11 for uhhhh . i dont play the zelda games . link in majoras mask
i technically answered it here, but ill answer it in relation to mm specifically bc i will Never shut up about link ocarina </3
character ask game!
11.) What’s the first thing you think about when thinking about the character?
honestly? the difference in how young link is portrayed in oot's promo art vs. mm's promo art. oots art feels like "this is what the main character looks like before the game starts" versus "this is the main character." it also very much feels like you can feel the change in their character following the events of ocarina of time just w how shes drawn ,,,,, idk how else to explain it !!! they portray her differently but they dont. but they do. but also they dont but like yeah they do
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also unrelated but oots promo art style is so. ? .its very interesting in that its, like, detailed but not. like they were trying to flesh out the n64 graphics while still keeping in mind that the game had, yk. n64 graphics. as opposed to the mm promo image which was made for the 3d remake. its neat, in a way!!

i’m having a lot of trouble discerning my feelings between wind waker and TOTK, with both possibly being my favorite game ever, let alone as a zelda game.
i first played wind waker in the combo collectors edition gamecube disc where it had OOT/MM/LOZ/AOL in it. however, it was simply just a demo, not anywhere near the full game. but in just those few parts, i was obsessed with it, always finding myself playing it over and over again, not aware that it was just part of a bigger picture. i had started to play OOT as well, but i didn’t understand the concept of traveling and exploring so i mostly just swam around in the water of the kokiri forest, MM, every time i opened it i was met with nightmare fuel and immediately turned my game off.
wind waker as a whole, was a game i didn’t play until i was an adult. i followed the game up with playing twilight princess, which up until this point was my favorite zelda game when it came to the story.
but i’ve always loved water in zelda games, swimming around little pools or great oceans, whether it’s just for a few seconds to get to beedle’s shop or to traverse islands or to simply search for treasure. BOTW/TOTK only amplified my love for it (minus waterfalls)
the story of wind waker is amazing, it’s tragic, while also being strong and hopeful, leading to better days for link and zelda in another world. the design is gorgeous and the music is quite literally the best zelda has. traveling this world is amazing and always has cool things to find, exploring every island and doing fun quests. the dungeons are some of the best there is, honoring WW while also making something new and creative.
however, TOTK’s story has become my new favorite. the darkness, the light, the everything in between. having strong, powerful characters that contribute to the cause vs being a sentient sage we simply have to awaken that will stand to simply assist your final fight. everything that we have done from BOTW till the very end of TOTK, has all had a purpose and it feels so much more special. and do i even have to mention the light dragon??
but the biggest thing that holds me back in older zelda games are dungeons. i love them and i hate them. i struggle with them more than i find ease in doing them. so BOTW/TOTK dungeon design was perfect for me. especially TOTK, bc it added lore and story while being relatively easy to traverse. wind waker, i found to be the easiest of the traditonal zelda games ( i didn’t die up until the final ganondorf battle, yes i’m still bitter)
with TOTK, i found the ease of traversing the world and not finding myself stuck as often (where i’m more likely to abandon a game) and finding all kinds of creative, neat things to explore, as well as all of the things that i’ve loved before in wind waker. lurelin village feels like a love letter to outset island, eventide island even more so. boating our way over it like we had done so many times before with the king of red lions.
i think the main point i’m also getting at, is that within the next zelda game, we need to return to the sea, bringing along with the gorgeous, powerful, mind blowing story and world we got with TOTK. let us explore and create our own worlds. bring back the depths and sky islands but instead search the ocean bottom, bring us back to the tower of the gods. i know toon link is waiting.

Zelda fan showing up!Since it's technically a Zelda (and Fire Emblem) blog, I am here to send Zelda questions.
What is your favorite Link in the saga (because of its history or appearance) vs your favorite game in the saga (playability or history)?
OH MY GOD A ZELDA ASK?!
SAFSDFDSFA, THANK YOU!
Thankfully for me, my favorite Link comes from my favorite Zelda game! Hero of Time, babyyyyyy! And Majora's Mask!
So a little context. Part of why I love the HoT (and not because he's hot. Heh, dum-bum-psst) is 100% partially because of nostalgia. OoT was the first game I ever laid eyes on. Ever.
I was little, had no clue was a video game was. And there was my uncle, sitting on his bed and playing this really strange thing! I was curious. My uncle was a teenager at the time, so he wouldn't let me play but he did indulge me by letting me watch. But it would be years before I ever got to play. My first actual video game would be some lame GBC game that probably wasn't worth the money. But I never forgot Zelda.
Fast forward a few years and I got my first home console. And lo- there was the Collector's Disk, with OoT, MM, LoZ, and AoL. At last! I got to play OoT! And it was amazing.
Well, mostly. Actually, I wasn't in love with Zelda at the time. I liked it and I got pretty far. Until I messed up the Water Temple and raged quit for 6 years. Yup. 6 years. I would play other games and mostly ignored Zelda.
Until one day I walked into Gamestop and there was a new game coming out. I recognized the name. Legend of Zelda! But this one was Twilight Princess. I decided I wanted it and asked for it for Christmas. And I got it!
It was magical. And for the first time, I found myself curious about Zelda beyond just as a casual. So I fired up OoT again and started over.
And then I played Majora's Mask.
Oh man, the memories. I loved these games. The story. The magic. Link himself!
While TP sparked me to push deeper into Zelda as a series, OoT was just something extra special to me. That's part of why I love the Hero of Time.
Plus, I like his story the best. His tragedy, the adversity he had to face. And his design is the ideal Link to me. He's not too feminine looking like BotW Link is, but he's not super macho masculine either. He's pretty but manly. I dig it.
But Majora's Mask has solidified itself as my favorite Zelda game and that is not nostalgia. It took years before I actually played it properly. And at even, I didn't even care for it!
But as I got older and understood the darker themes, the brilliance of the game's design, the overall story.... God, it is so good. I could write an essay so I will have to curb my enthusiasm.
Plus... Fierce Deity is peak Link. Absolute chad.
Thanks for the Zelda ask! What's your favorite Link and fav game?

oh is it loving majora's mask hours?? mm is my FAVORITE zelda, the story, the places, i love that it feels like we get to literally watch people live their lives for three days, since each day they do different stuff and different things happen. and you're right about ocarina vs majora it definitely feels more like saving People, than a World
in oot you’re the Chosen One, in mm you’re a kid who wants to save the people you end up finding along the way....................
idk again, i dont want to say oot is BAD, far from it!!! but majora has a vibe that i dont think was achieved by any other zelda,,,

Young Link might have PTSD - Part 2: Termina is NOT a Parallel World, Technically
This is a continuation of my last post so if you’re seeing this and haven’t read it, go here.
This is the part where I somewhat smoothly segue into Majora’s Mask. Link, lonely and filled with unprocessed trauma, leaves Hyrule in search of Navi. According to most sources (which take from Hyrule Historia probably? don’t quote me on it), Link falls down a hole into Termina, a parallel world to Hyrule, that contains many familiar looking denizens of Hyrule, but playing different roles. And well, if you probably guessed by the title, I have a rather different interpretation.
Okay, so in a nutshell my theory is that Termina is in fact all a dream, kind of like Koholint Island. Except the one dreaming up this world isn’t some deity like the Giants or Skull Kid or the Moon. It’s Link.
(big explainey hoo hah below)
Evidence 1: Link begins the game sleeping. Yes, I know literally every Zelda game begins this way and it’s a whole tradition thing. I am beginning with the weakest points first and working my way up to the strong ones. We’ll get there.
Evidence 2: The reuse of character and environment models from Ocarina of Time. The literal IRL reason for this is of course the game famously being given only one year of production time, which meant that the most practical method was to reuse as much material from MM’s predecessor as possible (eg. Romani Ranch sign is the Kakariko Village sign, and still says Kakariko Village on it). It seems like a rather offhand afterthought for Nintendo to chalk it all up to “oh its just a parallel world like Link to the Past or something. But think of it like this; when we dream, we often see familiar people from throughout our lives put in strange and unexpected situations, like that irritable old farmhand you hated so much is now a depressed circus master for some reason. Dreams don’t make sense. Things you know will mix with other strange inexplicable things, fleeting thoughts in your mind, all roughly tied together by whatever emotions you had been feeling when you went to bed. Malon is split into two people, Romani and Cremia, her older and younger self. This might reflect how Link feels about Malon, that she changed so much in those 7 years that she’s like a different person entirely, that it’s hard for him to process that they are the same, because the change was so shockingly sudden for him.
Evidence 3: Gorons in the snow, Gerudo by the sea. Yes, I know that sounds a lot like good evidence for a parallel world (that’s why the idea is widely accepted in the first place, it has merit), but it also works in as dream world evidence too. As a child, my family was obsessed with skiing. We would go to the same mountain every winter, and we would stay at the same lodge. It almost became like a second home for me. So much so, that one night I dreamed that my house had been replaced by the lodge, so it wasn’t on a snow-capped mountain, but in a bushy Australian suburb. Okay that kinda got off subject but I’m bad at conclusions so in summary Dreams Just Be Like That (tm). You get what I’m saying right? No? Sorry, let’s just move on.
Evidence 4: The Milk Bar. AKA my favourite location in the game! It’s often overlooked as the “haha funny they couldn’t put alcohol in kids game so its kiddy milk hee hee”, but it is actually a strong thematic pillar of Majora’s Mask. As I mentioned in Part 1, if you put a 9 year old in a 16 year old’s body and call him an adult before ripping that all away is probably going to leave the kid with an identity crisis. What is a mature place open at late hours when children are sleeping? A bar. What is a drink associated with the young, being produced for the purpose of helping children grow? Milk. No please don’t go I swear there’s more to this, stay with me. In order to gain access to the bar, Link must prove he is mature enough by wearing a mask, a disguise, like Adult Link is to Young Link. Being adult isn’t earned through years of natural living experience and mental development, it’s a thing you are given by adults to just BE when they deem you worthy, at least from how Link sees it. So that is the amalgamation of dream thoughts that is the Milk Bar. Is it mature? Is it childish? What is the line between the two? Is there one? It’s the culmination of his anxieties and confusions that he doesn’t know how to express. Another, smaller expression of this anxiety is the Clock Town Guards. When Link is a Deku, the guards say they don’t allow children outside the gates. When Link turns back however, the guard goes to stop him because he looks too young, but sees that he has a sword, and lets him pass. Why the sword? Well, in one way this is a callback to Kokiri Forest, where Mido doesn’t let Link see the Deku Tree until he has a sword. But also, what is the item that lets Link travel through time and become an adult in OOT? The Master Sword. Link seems to believe that adulthood is measured by the things you have, physical markers of maturity, which is how lots of children see adulthood. You’re an adult if you can drink, if you’re tall, if you’re married, if you have a house, a car etc. But in reality this isn’t how it works. Heck, I’m technically an adult but I sure as hell don’t feel like one, because I know I still have things to learn about responsibility, patience and all the other things, that can only come with time, which is the moral conclusion of OOT, but clearly Link missed the memo. Don’t get me wrong, there are some indicators to show he’s grown a bit. He can ride Epona, use the bow, do flips like some kind of acrobat etc. But those strange and confused feelings linger, and manifest in the young boy’s dreams.
Evidence 5: The four transformation masks. The four masks represent different aspects of Link’s self, and the way he grew and changed in OOT. Deku Scrub the Innocent, Goron the Confident, Zora the Mature and Fierce Deity the Hero. Link began only knowing the Kokiri Forest, and nothing of the world outside. As he set out on his journey, he grew more confident in his skills and defeated greater foes. When evil took over, he learned from his fatal mistake and worked to right it. And when it was finally time to face the greatest threat, he was ready, with all the heart pieces, bottles full of fairies, Biggoron Sword in hand. At that moment he struck the final blow he probably felt like the strong and unstoppable hero everyone in Hyrule told him he needed to be. And that feeling of pure uncompromising strength, with the whole world behind him, manifested in the Fierce Deity. Fierce Deity is much taller than Adult Link, and packs so much of a punch that he can beat Majora without batting an eye, like some overpowered Super Saiyan. It reminds me a lot of Undertale, with young Asriel becoming what he imagines to be an all-powerful godlike being, like something you’d see as a children’s drawing. Fierce Deity gives off those vibes, like “he has a HUGE SWORD that SHOOTS BEAMS OF LIGHT and he’s 8 FOOT TALL and CAN KILL ENEMIES IN A SINGLE BLOW!!” Before the final battle on the moon, when Majora gives you the mask, he childishly asks if you want to play a game of good guys and bad guys. And the good guy always wins, no matter what. Fierce Deity makes the final boss a cakewalk, but its supposed to.
Evidence 6: Anju and Kafei. Short one, because it falls a lot into everything else I’ve said regarding childhood vs adulthood. Kafei is effectively a switcheroo of what happened to Link in OOT. An adult shrunk back to childhood, uncomfortable in his new body and looking for a way to fix everything. He’s a reflection of how Link now kinda feels like an adult in a child’s body, because he had started to be used to being called an adult.
Evidence 7: The Moon. I haven’t super touched on the main meat of the game yet, so here it is. The moon and the 3 day mechanic is an allegory for constant mounting pressure, that builds and builds, never ceasing, because the world is in danger, and there’s only one person who has been chosen to save it. I’ve always been interested in the Chosen One narrative, and how different media explore the idea of the world’s very existence being pushed onto one person. How at the end of it all, they can never be the same again after all they’ve gone through. When you’re somehow expected to hold up the Moon itself single-handed, and your life and everything you care about suffers because you’re putting everyone else before yourself. That feeling of complete loneliness under a crushing weight, and although other characters may come to help you, in the end its still all down to you, and you never had a choice in any of it, as all the decisions were made by someone else. You must do what they tell you. Believe in yourself, believe...
Evidence 8: Skull Kid. The story goes that long ago in Termina, the Skull Kid and the Giants played together, until one day, the Giants left, leaving the Skull Kid alone and heartbroken, with nobody to turn to. As life moves on, things may change, and people always come and go from your life. Your friend might move overseas, or stop texting you, or you might fall out of friendship after an awkward event from which you could never recover (no, these have totally not all happened to me, shut up i’m fine), or your fairy companion might just disappear without so much as a goodbye after their task is complete. And it feels like you didn’t matter at all. That they never really cared about you, and you’re as easy to drop and move on from as a child’s toy. You might get angry, and want to shut them out, and give them a taste of their own medicine. Majora’s Mask teaches you that this isn’t the case. Life is ever changing, but you will always have the memories of times with your friends, and a chance to make more with new friends, like a sassy talkative fairy sprite and her shy brother or a child made of wood who wants to destroy the world. Friends come from unlikely places, so accept that change will happen and hope that wherever the people you knew are, they’re okay. You’re thinking about them, so they might be thinking about you too. And who knows? Life is unpredictable. They might just come back one day, and it’ll be like they were never gone.
Evidence 9 (the final one, I promise): The Song of Healing. At the end of all things, after losing ones you love, connections to family and friends, memories of things long past... you need time to heal. Link’s journey through Termina is a constant gauntlet of running into his own past traumas, forced to relive them again, and again, and again. But sometimes you should take a deep breath, gather your thoughts, and take time to heal. Although it can be important to confront your fears and learn to surpass them, it is exhausting, and you can end up more emotionally broken than when you started. The three masks all had regrets of powerlessness; unable to protect your community, your loved ones, or even yourself. Troubles you’ve gone through that keep plaguing your mind, and you’re wondering if you’ve done enough, seeking answers where none can be found. And the best thing you can do... is accept and move on. Be kind to yourself, and give yourself time to heal. Link’s way of processing his grief and trauma is to create an entire hellscape world in his own head, but not everyone processes it the same way. Sometimes you feel like you need to busy yourself, or listen to soothing music, or talk to people you trust, or spend copious amounts of money, or make some angst art, or cuddle your plush toys until their stuffing squeezes out. Sometimes life hits you in the face and you want to blame yourself for standing in the firing line, but it’s not your fault. It’s okay to feel however you feel, whether you’re drenched in a pool of tears or you just feel numb, it’s okay and natural. You’re okay. You’re here.
Okay so it got kinda personal at the end there but I hope it was informative, and made you think a little bit differently about Majora’s Mask and Ocarina of Time. You probably want to go back and play them now. Me too.
So was this all just an excuse for me to gush about how cool Majora’s Mask is? Hell fucking yes it was. Congratulations for making it through my monstrous ramblings, you get the secret prize of looking at my weird art on my DA. Here you go. Have a nice day, Zelda Nerds.

which is a better first zelda game
ocarina of time (n64 or 3ds), majoras mask (also n64 or 3ds), wind waker (gcn), or twilight princess (gcn or wii)?
i’m leaving towards n64 ocarina or majora (my first and also extremely well known and gives a good grasp of the Zelda Game mechanics and style etc, vs a more self contained but just as good and shorter version with more time management and less required hours of gameplay), but i’m also still considering wind waker (best graphics of the top 4 and fun gameplay, but very limited and cartooney and the sailing gets very irritating for a first timer) and twilight princess (a good in between for the previous three and convenient console-wise, but bad graphics and lighting, a much longer game, more complicated and convoluted mechanics especially with wolf link, and the inconvenience and awkwardness of motion controls if on wii)
my friend who i’m doing this for only has a wii u, which would mean i’d have to constantly apologize for the awful awful motion controls if going with tp, or bring and hook up one of my own consoles which is inconvenient, time consuming, and might not be compatible with their newer tv
and as much as i’d like to just give them a 3ds oot or mm, it wouldn’t be the experience that i and they want it to be, it’d be much more solitary and much less fun.
anyway, if you have any opinions on it i’d love to hear them

I know that it’s talked about a lot, but after finishing Majora’s Mask a third time, I have some thoughts about the game and its predecessor that I’d like to vent about.
In my opinion, Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask are the two most artistic entries in the series. Yes, BotW is beautiful and exploring the open world is fun and interesting. Yes, Wind Waker always makes me happy, and yes, Twilight Princess breaks my heart, but there’s something so special about Ocarina and Majora.
Here we have two games about coming-of-age, good vs evil, friendship, and courage. There are many other themes in both games that it would take forever to list them all. Every character you meet, whether main like Zelda and Saria, or minor like Anju and Pamela, leaves a lasting impression. Even though cutscenes aren’t fully animated, I couldn’t tell you the happiness I felt seeing Anju and Kafei wed, or the amount of tears I shed watching Zelda send Link back in the final OoT scene.
God, and the music in both games, as well. The credit sequence in Ocarina gets me teary-eyed every damn time, and I still get chills hearing Oath to Order.
They’re both such emotional experiences. The dialogue in both games, while simple, is so great. The speech that the Happy Mask Salesman gives Link at the end of MM, for example: “Whenever there is a meeting, a parting is sure to follow. However, that parting need not last forever. Whether a parting be forever, or merely for a short time...that is up to you.” Those few words evoke such emotion in me that it can’t be compared to other powerful scenes in the series.
I was born in between Ocarina and Majora’s release dates, so I wasn’t nearly old enough to be around for the hype about Ocarina, and I get that other people are sick of hearing about how good it is. I played Ocarina for the first time early last year, so I went into it knowing how many people loved it. I didn’t end up adoring it to appease all the manic fans, I ended up loving it because of all the love and care that Nintendo put into both of these games (and to think that MM was only developed in about a year...) Each dungeon, song, and area is unique; the music is memorable; and the stories of each game are creative and special. Both involve time travel, but both are drastically different from each other in other ways. I’m a writer myself, and one of my goals is to write something that has as much of an impact on someone that the writing in both OoT and MM has had on me.
This isn’t bashing other entries in the series, nor telling you that you can’t love the other games more. I’ve played over 200 hours of BotW, and I’m planning to replay Wind Waker next month for its 15th anniversary. I love all Zelda games, and they all have their strengths. I love them all for different reasons. However, to me, they just can’t have the emotional impact that Ocarina of Time or Majora’s Mask has had on me.

I will do: fanfictions, light/mild romance (ask about any ship you want/don’t want me to mention/write), stuff with OC’s, headcanons, angst, fluff, basically anything but smut, crossovers! (ask about stuff if I didn’t mention it here. this is just general stuff)
Be Specific! Whether it’s your idea or character, be descriptive in explaining it please!
I will post the finished work on my AO3 as well as my tumblr unless asked otherwise.
I will start the commission after you have paid for it.
[anything more than 5k will take at least a week, depending on how motivated/busy I am. It could take me 1 week write 50k, or a month to write less than 10k. I love researching so I might even do a crapton of research before actually writing it. what I’m saying is that it you won’t get the work the second you pay for it, but I will try to get it out within a month.
If I go over the amount you paid for, you don’t need to pay extra. Like, if you paid for 1k & I pump out 2k, you don’t need to fork over more cash.
if you have trouble remembering what < & > stand for, I always say in my head “I love you <3” aka “I love you less than 3”, so <1k would be “less than 1k”, >10k would be “more than 10k”. you can thank watching livestreams on twitch way too often for that weird little trick]

backgrounds, romance, furries & mechas aren’t really my forte, but I’m willing to draw those depending on how much practice I have drawing that thing (like VLD lions, Shiro’s arm & Galra) or if I’m alright with that ship (romance makes me uncomfortable. I mostly ship brotp’s, basically).
will do: humans, animals, fandom stuff, OC’s, crossovers. If there’s a series I haven’t listed as one I’m familiar with, ask me about it!
Be specific please! Give a description &/or reference picture.
I’ll post it on my blog unless told otherwise, so specify if you don’t want me to post it publicly.

Zelda is on my mind, so, Zelda!
My issue with the Zelda timeline is not that there’s a branch where “this is what happens if the Hero of Time dies in the fight against Ganondorf.” I think that actually makes a lot of sense. My issue with the Zelda timeline is how the original OoT split (adult timeline vs. child timeline) works out.
For the first bit, it makes sense to me that there’s a timeline split where the Hero dies because that’s just how Time works. Time, at least in my mind, is like an extensive, massive tree branch that we’re all traveling down, and every single time we make a choice a new branch splits off that one. You can also think of it like a road, and these are forks in the road, whatever. When we make a decision, new branches split off from that. There’s the branch we decide to start traveling down, but the other branches, representing events that don’t occur or choices that aren’t made, are still there. They still exist. And since they exist, there are things that happen on them, there are events that occur because of them.
So we take this situation, with Link fighting Ganondorf. On one branch, Link succeeds and wins the fight. Ganondorf is trapped in the Sacred Realm. On the other branch, Link dies. He is murdered and Ganondorf’s reign continues unchallenged. Both of these branches exist, because they have to, just as Link’s death at any other point in OoT technically should exist in separate branches as well (though since Ganondorf’s reign continues unchecked, they all mostly lead to the same end result, with the exception of if Link dies prior to getting all three Spiritual Stones---that should be its own path). The same is true for any other Zelda game, really, and it’s true for other characters dying as well. The way a timeline looks is that it’s less like a line with a few branches, and more like a series of infinite roads and branches, all continuously splintering and fracturing, some only marginally different than their neighbors, others radically so. In this line Zelda dies in the seven year game because she’s killed by a Gerudo soldier while masquerading as Sheik. In this timeline over here, Saria dies in the Forest Temple before Link can save her. In this one over here, Ganondorf dies because he chokes on a piece of pita bread, and so on and so forth. Maybe in this other timeline no one dies, but Death Mountain erupts. Sure, everyone is saved, but Kakariko Village is completely decimated from the lava, and so on and so forth.
What we see as the Zelda timeline is---or should be---an extremely simplified version for our consumption based on the events that are relevant. All of those other timelines absolutely exist, because they must, because this is how Time works, but we don’t see them noted because they’re not relevant. The “Hero dies” timeline is relevant because Nintendo has figured out what happens after that point. The other possibilities are there, but right now we don’t need to know about them. They’re not relevant.
So I’m more than fine with the “Hero dies” branch of the timeline because it makes sense. None of us saw it coming, but it makes sense. The other part, though . . .
Oh boy.
So, long before Hyrule Historia was released and the actual timeline was revealed, my friend Andy and I got into a three hour fight---a fight with actual yelling---about the Zelda timeline. Keep in mind that this fight was from something like midnight to three in the morning, and we weren’t angry so much as we were passionate, but it was still a very heated discussion that involved our mutual friend/Andy’s roommate Pedro yelling at us to shut up about it and stop (which was kind of hypocritical, because this was the same guy who would give twenty minute speeches about his philosophical beliefs, would allow us to say one sentence, and then say “no no no” before he went on another twenty minute speech, but nonetheless). This timeline argument was, specifically, about how the branch in the timeline occurred. We both agreed that the split occurred with OoT. However, we disagreed with how that split should carry out. To summarize, our arguments were as such:
Andy:
The split occurred when Zelda sent Link back in time. This left the Bad Future/adult timeline, where Link no longer was, and created a new future from the child timeline.
Me:
Zelda sent Link back, yes, but the true split hinged on Link’s decision after that. Namely, in one version of events he chose to go to Termina (Majora’s Mask), which resulted in him not being there when Ganondorf broke free and wreaked havoc, leading to the ocean future (Wind Waker) in which we are specifically told that the Hero of Time did not come when called. In another, he chose to stay in Hyrule, leading to him being there when the time came and Ganondorf being imprisoned again (Twilight Princess).
And we all know who ended up being right, but I still disagree with it.
Andy---and Aonuma---feel that the change comes dependent on where Link is, physically, at the time. The way that Andy and Aonuma feel is that Zelda physically sent Link’s entire body back through time, leaving the Bad Future completely open and defenseless for Ganondorf to come back and wreak havoc (never mind that the Seven Sages have all been awakened in that timeline, and thus it should logically lead to Twilight Princess and not Wind Waker, but nonetheless). Because the Hero is physically present in the child timeline, and can warn King Daphnes (who for some reason listens to a ten year old stranger he doesn’t know versus his ten year old daughter???), everything is fine in the Child Timeline, whereas it is not in the Adult Timeline.
I still vehemently disagree with this.
I disagree with the fact that the split occurs when Zelda sends Link back. In fact, I feel that Link going back, warning Daphnes, and averting that Bad Future (as Nintendo says he did) means that the Bad Future just . . . shouldn’t exist anymore. It’s been averted. They saved Hyrule, Hyrule is still suffering, Zelda sends Link back to fix this mistake, and he does. Ganondorf gets imprisoned as a result of him warning Daphnes. Then, some time after that, Ganondorf breaks free. In one timeline, Link has gone off to adventure in Termina, and Hyrule is defenseless. This leads to Wind Waker. In another, Link said “nah, I can live without Navi” and never went to Termina, therefore he is there to save Hyrule and say “not this shit again,” leading to Twilight Princess. That is when the split should occur, that is what makes sense. I can see Andy’s reasoning that “but the Bad Future does exist, you can’t just wipe a branch off the map like that,” but I feel like that’s precisely what you are doing if you go back to specifically negate the event where that timeline happens. And even if it still exists, technically, in the context of your story and the things relative to your narrative, it doesn’t. It’s like---in Majora’s Mask, Link specifically keeps traveling back to the start of the three days in order to save Termina. Of course he can’t save everyone in every Cycle, but at the end of the game everyone is saved regardless, from the Moon and otherwise. The timelines where they aren’t are now rendered null. We aren’t doing anything with them anymore. That’s Hyrule’s Bad Future, I feel. That’s the “Adult Timeline.” The split shouldn’t be dependent on whether or not Zelda sends Link back, but rather dependent on the choice Link makes of whether or not to leave Hyrule, which has been a choice that he canonically does make since 2000. Particularly given that Wind Waker followed Majora’s Mask, I honestly thought for years that the Hero of Time’s absence when the people needed him in Wind Waker’s backstory was a direct result of him being gone from Hyrule as a result of his quest in Termina.
So yeah, tl;dr, my unpopular opinion is both that I’m A-OK with the Hero Dies timeline, but I still take issue with when the split occurs in the rest of the timeline (or rather, how it occurs). I don’t jive with all this Adult Timeline and Child Timeline nonsense. I much prefer a “if we have MM, we have Wind Waker” and “if we don’t have MM, we have TP” type of split. That makes the most sense to me. Nintendo’s other convoluted nonsense? Nah. Leave that on the wayside, son. They messed it all up.
(Andy was pretty happy to win the fight years later, though.)

Time: we got an ask...it looks like someone wants to know which of us two is the strongest, Toony.
Toony: Oh, really? That doesn't seem like a fair question, I mean, I've only had a little formal training and you haven't had any. What scale are we supposed to grade by? Arty: You guys should fight! [chanting in bg] fight!
Time: Arty, be quiet! I don't wanna fight you, Toony. There has to be some other way to decide, right?
Arty: Fiiiiight!
Toony/Time: Shut up!
Toony: Maybe we should ask our followers what they think. HEY GUYS! Who do you think is stronger out of me, the hero from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, and Time, from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask?
Arty: Aw, you guys are so boring...
Time: SEND IN YOUR ANSWERS....to the askbox and maybe we'll make a compiliation of our favorites! Just remember to be considerate. Bye!

headcanon dump time- game vs manga influences
so, for Link here, a majority of what I’m going by is the game canons because those are, well, canon. But there’s some parts of OoT/MM that I honestly really like how the manga shows them, so I figured I’d list some of them out just for fun and might also clear up stuff that’d be different for ppl who haven’t read them.  also because im extra i’m adding scans for visual ref, aka this is a long post,
First- the Kokiri forest itself. Just in how Link’s relationship to the other kokiri is shown, I really like it. The Great Deku Tree dungeon would still be just Link, not Link and Mido, but I also much prefer the way Link gets the deku shield- that he carved it himself from the Great Deku Tree’s remains, at his request. Aside from that there’s no major differences- basically it would mean that they only required Link have a sword before going inside the Great Deku Tree, vs needing a sword and shield. he got the shield after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The child segment following would all be just like the game, up until the siege on Hyrule Castle and Ganondorf chasing Zelda away. I love how the manga explains Link replacing the fairy ocarina with the ocarina of time, so I’m defs taking that part- after being easily defeated Ganondorf steals the fairy ocarina, thinking it’s the ocarina of time. He later destroys it, thinking that Link tricked him. (As well, the deku shield burns up at this point.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s not the same full-on battle in castle town that there is in the manga tho, I honestly kinda prefer just the chase happening while most citizens are still unaware of what’s going to happen soon.
For the rest of OoT, all game canon, just with some minor characterization stuff pulled from the manga.
For the MM manga, I like how it opens, showing Link traveling around with Epona. For the most part, I really only pull characterization stuff from MM’s manga, though. I do have stuff I really like, most importantly with regards to masks, but honestly that’s something that deserves its own post so I guess this’ll have a part 2 at some point
