#like I just want sambucky endgame

This meta has been a few years coming, but recently inspired due to: 1) Sian (@siancore) mentioning and incorporating into her amazing fic End of the World the moment that this meta is about, and 2) talking to Mexi (@thatmexisaurusrex) about this and then when she made that "share your fave sambucky moments that are canon" post, I knew this needed to finally been written and have its own proper post.

(Also, to @elektraking who wanted to be pinged when I finally wrote this, I finally did it!)

This post is long and image heavy but I didn't want to put it all under a read more.

We all know this scene from Infinity War, it's been all over people's dashes and giffed and etc etc. We also know it's a pretty quick scene, not necessarily a blink and you miss it one, but because it moves pretty quickly. If you're not paying too much attention to everyone else in the background, things will slip by.

However, watching things in 4K can really make things interesting because 1) you can zoom in and 2) you can zoom in and see some pretty clear detail, like the fact Sam and Bucky are looking at each other during this entire scene.

You can see here that everyone present except Sam isn't really watching Steve and Bucky interact -- either they're blocked from of the camera (Rhodey, Ayo, Bruce) or they're not looking at them (Nat has her eyes closed, T'Challa is looking at the side).

Sam is clearly in Bucky's line of sight, even if Bucky is looking at Steve (because we know Steve is moving closer to him and is about to talk to him)

On zoom in, we can see Sam is not zoned out, this is a very focused look at what is happening in front of him.

The next moment is where Steve goes in for the hug, but during this hug, a couple of things happen: 1) Sam moves closer towards them a bit, 2) he and Bucky actually DO stare at each other over Steve's shoulder

And for more than a few moments. Sort of significant if you think about the fact that Sam and Bucky seem to communicate a lot with nonverbal looks between each other. (We see this a few times in Civil War, and then later in this movie, but that will be even more apparent as fact in Endgame and, of course, TFATWS.)

And perhaps this could be passed off as "looking at each other coz we're looking in the same direction" except for the fact that Bucky makes a deliberate look at Sam when we get the pan over to his face.

When Steve backs away from the hug, we see Sam is still looking at Bucky, so we can assume during the entire exchange when the camera goes towards Bucky, Sam is still doing that.

Which leads us to when the camera pans over to Bucky.

(Yeah, yeah the cropping on this is kinda weird for me, but I wanted to make sure you could see his face.)

Steve proceeds to ask Bucky how he's doing. And of course, Bucky gives some kind of cutesy quip that fills space and time before going to the next big plot thing.

It's very interesting that Bucky pauses right after saying "uh, not bad", but as indicated by the arrow I put in the gif, he's staring in the exact direction where Sam would be. Because if you notice in the screenshots before this moment, above, when Bucky and Steve break away from the hug, Sam is in Bucky's line of sight but somewhat to the side, the same direction as the glance in the gif.

Now, as we know, the others are barely watching Steve and Bucky's interaction except Sam, who's still watching with focused attention.

If you were standing where Sam is standing, watching all of this, hearing Steve asking Bucky, "how's it going" and he responds "uh, not bad," and pauses WHILE looking at a glance in your direction, most people would consider that a moment.

And why wouldn't it be a moment? No one else is paying attention to Bucky or Steve except Sam. Bucky and Sam have before this comment were looking at each other when Steve brings in Bucky to a hug. Hell, Bucky could have just said "for the end of the world" without looking sideways and the scene would've worked as intended.

Yet, he gives that glance, and has a smile as he says, "not bad". While looking at Sam. It's so quick, yet it says so much. And considering how we know it's canon for them to be able to speak volumes by just sharing glances at each other (hello Sam looking at Bucky during Endgame), why wouldn't that apply here too? Because the glance wasn't really needed if you think about it.

And of course, Bucky deflects with his "for the end of the world" coz 1) he doesn't want Steve to try to make more small talk and 2) world ending shit is happening, they do NOT have time to stand around, they need to coordinate and they're on a time table. Because we all know Steve, he would want to know the reason why Bucky is actually smiling probably one of the first genuine smiles he's given on screen since TWS.

Anyway, we all know the rest: the plot moves forward, Sam and Bucky end up standing close to each other to witness Thanos' forces trying to get through Wakanda's shields, and then they end up being blipped.

Still, while a short, quick moment, on closer inspection, a lot can be said. Another in a line of Sam and Bucky's "saying things with a look" moments, but an underappreciated one.

So who wants to put me in a coma until they dismantle the entire MCU, start over, and let me live my SamSteve dreams with Sam and Steve actually working together both as Captain America. I need my Captain Husbands. Times is hard as a SamSteve shipper. We barely had shit then and we barely have shit now because they want to insert Bucky into everything. Like I’m all for polycules or whatever but I really don’t give any damns about Bucky (and I don’t even like Stucky all that much either. I don’t hate it it’s just meh) . Like I tried but I don’t really care. I was a SamSteve trooper before SamBucky came along and even though I’m partial to SamBucky and whatever the throuple ship name is my heart will forever and always belong to SamSteve first. “On Your Left” was and forever will be iconic. Sam sitting next to Steve while he was hospitalized and playing Marvin Gaye will forever be iconic. Sam saying “I do what he does just slower” will forever be my crack rock. Steve going straight to Sam because Sam was the only one he could trust ? Steve inviting Sam to an avengers party as his plus one ? “Home is home you know” ? That’s the guacamole on top of the taco and that’s not even all their best lines for each other.

I’m just really yearning for SamSteve straight with no Bucky chaser. That’s all I’ve been craving for the past eight years and there’s no going back. Endgame didn’t fucking happen. That shit was cancelled for a tax write off. Steve and Sam are Captain America together and they’re married and they go on runs together every morning and Steve volunteers at the VA and they have Sunday dinners with Sam’s family (his parents aren’t fucking dead I don’t care) and they regularly babysit Sam’s nephews and come in for career day

Punchline (SamBucky, post-HTP sickfic): Shitty Bedtime Stories is one of my favorite series; I really like the dynamic of Sam and Bucky having a healthy relationship while also learning to navigate boundaries in a trauma-informed sense. I really enjoyed writing this part in particular; the genre fusion of crack with sickfic with a really awful story about what Bucky went through was super interesting to navigate.

Bloom (SamSteveBucky, soulmate AU, magical realism): I don't actually like soulmate AUs that much normally, so exploring and unpacking the tropes associated with them was a lot of fun. I also let myself go a bit more prose-y than I usually do. tbh I didn't really think anyone would read this, so the fact that other people have enjoyed it too was really gratifying (also, the art is GORGEOUS).

the more I see you (the more I want you) (SamBucky, 5+1 times Sam accidentally sees Bucky's junk): again with great art, and also, this one was just fun to write. Also it was the first longfic I wrote in years, so it's got a special place in my heart.

nothing in nature that freezes your heart (gen, post-Endgame, A Christmas Carol AU): idk, I just really like Christmas fics.

quarantriad (SamSteveBucky, pandemic fic): I also really like the dynamic between Sam and Steve and Bucky here, and it's fun to write something that's a bit more lighthearted (even though the subject matter is kind of heavy). Also, it took me years to finish it and I'm proud I did lol.

10 - T’Challa/Bucky I mean this was at a time before I even read standalone Sam or Bucky with anyone else and bam! I loved them and understand it staying in unfinished and think about that last scene and the words from time to time. About what it means for each of them, even if both know its not really real it’s enough in that moment and I think enough of a foundation. One of the maybe 2 times I didn’t want SamBucky endgame.

12 - I have read all of your fics multiple times. Long ones maybe twice only. And long ones where I was there before it ended/when it started, I reread before I read the update. I read “A Chance” absolutely countless times…the tab just stayed open for months and months.

5 - I need to see if you have Attoye(is that what we call them now?) I haven’t read. But what haunts me the most is your Walking Dead fics. I tried watching the show but zombies. I will watch it just to read your fics though. Because I just know it’ll destroy me in a good way and make me feel. I know you also have a SamBucky I haven’t started but it seemed sad and I’m just not ok enough to read anything sad.

Listen the Bucky/T'Challa fic is dear to me. I have it all outlined, and do want to come back to it. We'll see how I go. But it's such a lovely little rare pair. The multi-shipper in me gives all I got to each pairing I like, so I'm glad you liked it. I just think they're sweet together.

Attoye is such a great ship. The chemistry from what little we've seen on our screens is fire. Their fight scene is better than Steve vs Winter Soldier in my opinion because there's an added layer of sexual tension to it. I adore this ship so much.

The Walking Dead was such an awesome show. Rick and Michonne circa S3 invented sexual tension lol if you ever watch the show, please come yell at me about it!

I lost all of my SarahBucky fics because my old laptop shit itself. I'm gonna get someone to look at it and see if I can salvage those stories. I thought I backed them up, but didn't. Kicking myself so hard.

Now this one is my secret favorite of the bunch. I came up with this awhile ago after I realized Sam's look in Endgame gives me major 70s detective vibes.

It's a Sambucky modern AU detective story. Sam is a New York City detective, who gets pulled back into a cold case of his, after a recent grisly murder. He turns to Bucky for help, who now is a professor of criminal psychology at NYU, but was formerly an undercover cop who has his own ties to the case.

Unfortunately I don't know jack about police work or major crimes units or forensics and bc of that it's going to take a ton of research, which is why I've been dragging my feet on it, but from what little I've written so far it's been really fun!

Title is from “Renegade” by Big Red Machine and Taylor Swift.

Sam Wilson knows it’s gonna be a shitty day as soon as his alarm goes off. There’s no particular reason, it’s just one of those feelings that you get when you open your eyes and think ‘Yup, today the Universe is gonna test me.’ His mama always used to say he’d gotten up on the wrong side of the bed when he’d come downstairs, all storm clouds and grumbling about having to go to school, snapping at his little sister. But now that he’s grown, Sam knows it’s not a matter of getting up on the wrong side of the bed but somehow gettin’ on the wrong side of the Universe. 

His suspicions are confirmed when he arrives at his favorite local coffee shop, The Harlem Hot Spot, and sees a hand-written sign: “No espresso today, only drip or cold brew. Sorry for the inconvenience - Mgmt.” With a heavy sigh he pushes the door open, the familiar overhead bell cheerfully jangling in a way that almost feels mocking. 

“Hey, Detective Wilson.” Charisse, who always works the morning shift when Sam comes in, waves from behind the counter. “Sorry, but no usual today.”

“Yeah, I saw the sign. What happened?” 

“Espresso machine is on the fritz.” She grimaces as she says it, like she’s waiting for him to snap at her for it. It’s probably her hundredth time explaining it today, and knowing New York morning commuters she’s probably been yelled at several times already. “We got drip or cold brew, if you want coffee.”

It’s absolutely a double-shot kind of day but that means he’ll need to go to the Starbucks next to the precinct where he’ll pay way too much for a shitty latte. 

“Again? Damn, y’all need to get a new machine,” he grumbles.

She snorts. “We take cash, Apple Pay or Amazon gift cards if you’re feeling generous. Maurice is coming by later to fix it.”

He gets a large coffee to go, along with a blueberry muffin. He’s been trying to cut back on his carbs but, fuck it, anything to help his shitty mood. He stuffs a couple singles into the tip jar, mixes some half and half into his cup and makes his way to the precinct by way of the (subway).

By the time Sam gets to the station, his coffee is already half gone, and he knows he’s going to need to find time to make midday coffee run. He makes his way through the chaos that happens every morning as the graveyard shift tries to wrap up their paperwork and gives the lowdown of the previous night’s events to the day shift. As he crosses the lobby, Sam sees Officer Joaquin Torres, catch his eye, file in hand, and immediately makes a dash for the elevator. The kid is nice enough, albeit a little eager, and wants to be a detective. He’s decided on Sam being his mentor even though Sam never agreed to any such thing.

“Sir, I’ve got something for you! Just came through processing!”

“No, Torres!” he calls over his shoulder. “I haven’t had enough caffeine yet for whatever the fuck you got in that file.” He jams the button to the third floor but Torres is faster and manages to squeeze in as the doors shut. 

“Well drink up sir, because you’re gonna wanna see this.”

“I told you a million times, man, don’t call me sir,” Sam sighs, rubbing his temples with a free hand.

He already feels a headache coming on, and the bad feeling he woke up with intensifies. The elevator dings as the doors open to the bullpen, the sound reverberating around his skull. He takes the folder with a heavy sigh and makes his way over to his desk, Torres hot on his heels. Something about the kid’s demeanor is off; it’s like he knows what Sam’s reaction is going to be before Sam does and he doesn’t like that. 

Setting his coffee and uneaten muffin down, Sam flips open the file and starts reading but only gets a few sentences before he feels the air leaving his lungs. He looks up at Torres, who’s staring at him anxiously.

“This was from this morning?”

“Found the body around 4 am, sir.”

Sam looks back down at the report: vic is a male, early thirties, body dumped in the Hudson, missing their left arm. 

“Jesus Christ, Torres. It’s fucking Riley.”

I’m not even the biggest sambucky shipper but Sam and Bucky have more chemistry then Steve and Bucky ever will. Even Sebastian will start that Steve and Bucky are a brotherhood while Sam and Bucky are a friendship there’s a reason to it. Even in the comics Sam and Bucky have this type of relationship that’s more romantic.

Honestly, at least in the MCU, thought of Bucky and Steve as surrogate brothers. Like even that brief scene where Steve's mom has died and Bucky is like trying to convince him to come with him and his family speaks of familial love. Well at least to me.

Even that moment in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier where Bucky is so adamant about Sam taking the shield. Him basically saying that is the only family had left... First off made me want to cry cause here this man saying an inanimate object represents the family he lost.😢 Second want to curse Steve out for leaving a vulnerable Bucky alone, even if she was his first love.🤬

Steve family to Bucky in my opinion. It would be complicated if they were lovers before the brainwashing and Steve is dead set on having the same on Bucky wants he becomes a civilian. Bucky will never be the same and him living up to prewar Bucky is heartbreaking and hard to deal with. 💔 😔

Sam on the other hand is a fresh slate. He already saw Bucky at his worst. Sam is so big hearted he protects Bucky against others even when he swears up and down he hates him. The way they bounce of each other in arguments. Or how Sam isn't afraid to stand up to a man who has thrown him at least twice and fucked up his car insurance. 🤔

I love how they will fight each other one moment and have each others back the next. How Sam waits until Bucky is emotionally available to help him mentally without becoming a free psychiatrist. How they keep ending up together and fight over who is Steve's best friend. They just click even if some don't see that.

Sam let's Bucky be whatever version of himself Bucky can be after going through what he has been through. Sam has a weird knack for taking in stray super soldiers and making them feel like they have a person to rely on. Why else would Steve trust Sam above all others in CATWS after briefly knowing him. Or entrust the search and later care of Bucky to Sam. Even Steve knows Sam is good for Bucky even if Sam at first thought Bucky wasn't worth saving. I mean damn look at how they look at each other at the end of Avengers Endgame and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Sam changed his mind. He changed it for the better. He keeps changing his opinion on Bucky because he finds him worthy and Bucky knows whose there for him when the dust settles. Good ole Sam.🤧 😏 😉 😌

🛳️ A fic that brought you aboard a new ship

You know I kind of have a one-track mind when it comes to shipping, so it's mostly SteveBucky for me. The only other pairing I started to read regularly over the past year is SamBucky (I might make a separate rec post for that one day because I've since found some really excellent fics). I think the first SamBucky story I read that really convinced me was this one:

Muscle Memory by seapigeon | 13K, 3 parts in series, rated Teen-Explicit

Starts mid-season of TFATWS and then moves beyond that. This is only 13K but it packs such an emotional punch. This is Bucky and Sam dancing around each other, and away from each other, and then finally with each other. Also, I highly recommend everything else written by this author (including a fantastic WIP).

😂 A fic that made you laugh out loud

While we’re at it, let’s do another SamBucky rec:

we're awesome, totally genius by napricot | 4K, Teen

A short and sweet Modern No-Powers AU, in which hot teacher Bucky rescues Sam from a bad date with Tony Stark’s "evil twin". It is wonderful! Napricot is another one of those authors where I can wholeheartedly recommend everything she’s ever written. She has a special talent for taking the crackiest of premises and turning them into something moving and emotionally sincere. And still keep it hilarious! 

✨ A fic you wish you could read again for the first time

Hmmm...I think I would like to get the chance to read some of the “big ones” again for the first time and really savor them this time around. When I first read a lot of them, I was just gorging myself on all things Stucky I could find at the time and so some of them kind of tend to bleed together or I can hardly even remember anything other than...they were really good? But since I want to give some love to lesser known fics, let’s go with:

As Time Goes By by Trouble_With_The_Snap | 66K, Mature

This is a tough read--there are no happy endings here--and I realize that this is not a fic for everybody. In fact, it might not appeal to most people. However, it is one of the best fics I have ever read. I’ll just copy here what I wrote in my bookmark because I think it sums it up best:

A smart & thoughtful investigation into how Steve's Endgame choice would realistically play out. Brutally honest and absolutely devastating without being pointlessly cruel or wholly lacking in compassion towards the characters. Masterfully set up, patiently developed, confidently structured, beautifully written. And the payoff! I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop - and BOY, did it DROP. 

Like I said, you'll need a masochistic streak a mile wide to do this to yourself, but holy shit, it is so, so good. I realize that this may seem like a strange choice for the “I want to experience this all over again” question, but the feeling that came over me when I started to realize what the author was doing here and where it would inevitably lead was just...I was floored.

This was fun! Let’s do it again some time! You can always ask for more recs outside of this ask game.

💔 Least favorite ship you have written about? our ungentle sins (fandom: kings (2009), ship: Silas Benjamin/David Shepherd). I had the chance to write David/Jonathan and I wrote David/Saul? WHAT. (it was the yuletide ask) Absolute waste of weeks and weeks of reading the old testament and religious scholarship in order to write something dark and unhinged and losing my goddamn mind about this dumb family and their anointed twink. LOLOLOL AT ME. this slaps though. 

"Silas." 

He hears the voice and doesn't believe (his mind is not as keen as he thinks it is). "Yea, though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death," Silas parrots to the phantom, and closes his eyes. He can recite the whole speech by heart.

The air in the room changes, and he feels a hand at his knee and he looks.

David kneels at his feet, wearing what must be the fashion these days, and looking up at him. His smile is all teeth; sharp and bright like a king.

🔪 The fic/chapter that hurt the most to write? I have a few abandoned WIPs, and many of them I have hope of finishing. I can never write what I was gonna write for the whirligig of time (fandom: mcu post endgame; ship: stucky) because I just can’t fix steve leaving bucky for the past and for peggy. I had a great idea (massive multiverse plot and very much stucky endgame) but bless. THE PAIN IS STILL TOO NEAR.

🪜 Tell us a random fact about any fic! The sugar daddy winterbaron wip is NOT abandoned so I’ll speak on step on the glass (fandom: MCU; ship: winterbaron with sambucky rising): the sugar daddy gifts lavished on Bucky were my favorite parts to write, such fun. I want everything in the food section but ESPECIALLY I WANT THE LE CREUSET IN ARTICHAUT SO BADLY. I'm a fancy girl so I love giving Zemo the most fancy of tastes. :)

On Sundays, groceries Bucky didn’t purchase are delivered to his door. They usually arrive between 2 and 4 pm, and he sets down the book he’s reading to collect and put them up. He could easily make some calls to identify who makes the selections, makes the purchase, but he doesn’t.

He knows generally how much food costs these days (--it’s a racket--), he understands that items in these bags are on the higher end. An imported olive oil he’d never have purchased, cheeses he’s never heard of, slices of Jamón Ibérico, a rainbow array of produce, a Brunello di Montalcino and a grower Champagne.

His kitchen upgrade included new pans, new pots. Le Creuset in artichaut. New utensils, and cooking implements, and very sharp knives. White plates, elegant silverware, and simple glassware. One cabinet is all Waterford crystal -- wine glasses, champagne flutes, whisky tumblers, a decanter.

Hello! I just want to drop in and say how much I love Five and a half years of solitude. There aren't many post-Endgame fics about Samsteve, not like Stucky, Stony, or even Sambucky. The fact that you are writing a long fic that is dealing with each year of the Snap is like a miracle. Each chapter is more beautiful than the last, you are really a gifted writer. Again, thank you for all your time and energy. Can't wait for more!

It’s so funny you mention that there aren’t many post-endgame samsteve stories because that’s exactly what made me want to write this! There’s not enough Samsteve in general imo, and I really wanted to read a story about Steve’s guilt and grief but I couldn’t find a long one. So that’s where this idea came from. That and the fact that there’s just so much potential in that five year period that I could really let my imagination run wild.

Sambucky for a ship, or just Sam for a character.

Did Sam find Bucky between TWS and CW? Yes, but only once. They didn't even speak that much. It became obvious pretty quickly to Sam that Bucky was avoiding any confrontation, because it was easier to cope with, and also because he wasn't so naive to think that he could just "come home", whatever that means. He likes Sam instantly, but not overwhelmingly. Sam is less impressed, but he's sympathetic. He feels like absolute shit for not telling Steve and throws himself into the Avengers stuff to distract himself.

Civil War - they spend like a day and a half in a car together. They get on surprisingly well, jumping straight to banter, certainly less awkwardly than Bucky and Steve do. I don't think Sam (or anyone, sorry) visits Bucky in Wakanda before Infinity War. HC wise, in the days after Endgame, Sam and Bucky spend a lot of time together and that's when it really starts. Unfortuntely, it doesn't really get off the ground. Sam hasn't seen his family in seven years (two on the run, five in the blip); he needs to go home, so they separate. This is where Bucky's entitlement to Sam's time and personal space in TFATWS comes from, and their mutual concern for each other.

Sam is bi, but he doesn't really talk about it much. Partly because he's a private person but partly because he's guarded and doesn't want to show vulnerability. Bucky is also bi but is still 1930s about it - like, it's not the same vocabulary, it's not the same concepts, but he's still chill about it, if a bit stunted. It takes them a while to go public with it, and when they do it's a gradual process, not a big bombastic coming out. Nobody is remotely surprised either way.

Being Captain America isn't a real job. There's a lot of waiting around for some crisis to emerge, for something to help with. Sam has a knack for finding things to keep busy with, even when he should probably just be resting. Bucky keeps himself busy by looking after Sam.

i’m glad both that i’ve improved my skills in writing him and his dynamics with both other caps, whether that’s platonic or romantic, and that mcu has given us more insight into his character than before which for me makes writing him easier too bc there’s just more of a basis to work with. no matter how a fan is including his character in a work, regardless of the main ship, he deserves to be presented respectfully and not as a prop. i really really hope i can do him justice both in sessions as part of the ship and in my other wip, dublin au, where hes one of the main side characters because he’s been one of my favorite characters since catws premiered and this polycule has become so important to me. plus i definitely want to prove myself a bit since i’m not happy with how i’ve written him in some of my other works. wooooow that was probably way more of an essay than u needed sooooo maybe ill end here w my little obligatory snippet, as a treat <3:

Is Sambucky Canon or Not?

TL;DR: Yes, it is

I've seen some people saying that they only see friendship between Sam and Bucky, and I can understand that. Because depending on your education, the environment you grew up and the kind of media you’re usually exposed to, you will have a different interpretation of different situations, in real life or in TV. Just let me insert a short story before I dive into the Sambucky topic:

My best friend's uncle is in his fifties and has been living with his roommate (a man) for more than 10 years. They lived together, went on holidays together but officially were just roommates. My best friend wondered if they were a couple, but never talked about it to her parents because it wasn't her business. Two years ago, they decided to come out and get married. My best friend's parents and his parents were genuinely surprised, they were not expecting that, at all, not even a little bit. Let me tell you that it didn’t even cross their mind that it was a possibility, at all. For them, it had always just been two men who had decided to live together because they were single. And preferred to have a roommate rather than living alone.

What I want to say with this story is that people will see what they want to see, or what they're used to see, or what they were raised to see. It’s human.

What I mean is that you will have different perception of a same event, depending on your own circumstances. And I think the writers of TFATWS were counting on that a little bit when it came to Sam and Bucky’s relationship. They obviously didn't want to make some big announcement or big love declaration.

And yes, of course, I have my own circumstances as well, influencing the way I see things. I have shipped SamBucky since Civil War, when they were supposedly enemies. I never expected anything to happen between them on screen. But then they got a show together and I was so so happy about it but I didn't expect anything other than friendship between them.

I was perfectly fine with that because a show was already more than enough: my man Sam Wilson was becoming Captain America, the show was great, the characters were great, their interactions were great, and this wasn't a love story anyway but a superhero show. I thought that here was no way the showrunners would ever go there. I changed my mind after episode 5. I tried to stay objective, but it was clear to me that the writers were hinting at a relationship that went beyond friendship between Sam and Bucky. In some of my previous posts, I explained that there are some scenes and writing choices that make absolutely no sense if you read them as a scene between two friends. I can link them if anyone’s interested.

Side note: I would like to know if one person on this website can tell me what was up with Bucky's behavior with Torres (in episode 5)? What other explanation is there, if not jealousy? It's a scene they chose to keep, so it was probably written this way, there must be a reason. Please I’m begging someone explain it to me. I'm genuinely asking, because otherwise that scene alone is canon Sambucky.

After episode 5, I was convinced they would make Sambucky canon, one way or the other and I started speculating about the ways they could do it. What I said was that if they did make Sambucky canon, they would do it in a very subtle way, in order not to make it too obvious because that’s generally how Marvel movies deal with love stories. And also because they wouldn’t want to scare away their homophobic audience ( I guess Disney needs their money...who knows)

So here are the scenes of how I imagined SamBucky becoming canon and the comparison with reality:

1.

- What I thought we could get : AJ and Cass calling Bucky "Uncle Bucky" - What we got: AJ and Cass running up to Bucky and playing with him. This point is interesting because it’s also related to the point I made about how the environment you grew up in influences your perception of things. I grew up in a big family and I know that, at least in my family, kids don't run up to an adult like that just because it's their uncle’s friend or just because he's nice... There's a real bond there. They haven't seen Bucky just that one time when he slept on the couch. They're obviously close. But some people might just see this as kids being kids. Also, if you watch at how the kids were fake punching him, they were really coordinated with Bucky. They have done this plenty of times. 2.

What I thought we could see: A non-explicit scene where we were supposed to draw our own conclusions. I thought they could show us Bucky staying over for the night, and the last scene would be an empty couch, meaning we would have to understand that Bucky slept in Sam's room this time.

-What we got: Bucky arriving in Sam's car ( A few people on Tumblr pointed out that it was the car Sam was driving in episode 1) So here again we have a scene that a lot of people will not notice. But they still chose to put it there. 3.

What I thought could happen: Sam asking Bucky to stay in Delacroix

What we got: Bucky wrapping things up in New York, as if he was leaving the city for good and coming to Sam's party as if he already knew everyone there. You can read my take on this here. 4. What I thought could happen: The scene in the trailer where we see them looking in the same direction and then we get a shot from very far away where they're holding hands but it’s not so obvious because they are being filmed from a disctance. -What we got: The scene in trailer and then a blurry shot of Sam holding Bucky and then fondling with his neck to find the best spot to rest his hand on. So none of the scenes I was imagining happened exactly like I had imagined, but it felt like all of them happened but in a different versions, which is still crazy to me. If it had been only one scene. I could probably understand the people who see them as just friends. Actually, I still do understand the people who see them as just friends, because everyone has their own interpretation. What I am saying is that they are NOT being portrayed as just friends. There are TOO many scenes in the 6 episodes for it to be a coincidence. One or 2 would be ok but friendship doesn’t explain everything:

The therapy scene (not the therapy scene itself since it was improvised) but the therapist saying she had heard a lot about Sam and wanting them to do a couples’ therapy

Bucky following Sam no matter what

Sam saying ok as soon as Bucky says "do it for me"

Sam asking "what about Bucky?"

Bucky starting to touch Sam whenever he has the chance

Bucky being the one to bringing the suit for Sam

The boat repairing montage

Bucky wanting to stay at Sam's place, when a hotel room would have been more comfortable than a couch

The second day of boat repair in closed quarters with an intense staring scene.

And there are so many other scenes, soft touches, looks,...

These writing choices are not a coincidence, it’s not involuntary, and it’s not fan service ( Fan service is the roll in the flower field scene, or the therapy session). This is them telling a story.

Let’s not even talk about the scenes in Endgame:

So yes, Sam and Bucky are canon in the sense that Peter and Gamora were canon in the first movie, or Wanda and Vision were canon in Captain Civil War. Meaning that there was no big moment, kiss or anything, but the show is consistently throwing elements clearly showing Sam and Bucky as a romantic item and hinting at a lot more than friendship between them.

It is normal that some people have a different opinion. Because it is extremely rare, in big productions like this to have two male leads with romantic feelings towards each other, so not a lot people who see it will interpret it as such (I don't think it ever happened). You’ll see what you’re used to seeing.

I guess it also depends on what you expect from a love story. For me, the storyline between the characters, their scenes, their chemistry, the way their feelings towards each other are described, are the most important. The kiss scene is just there as a bonus, but I don't need it when the love story is told perfectly. If you’re used to seeing love stories with many kissing scenes, that’s what you will be expecting to see in most love stories.

If you're only used to seeing male friendships in superhero or action movies. The 1000th time you see men interacting in that type of movie or show, you are more likely to assume it is a friendship and nothing more, no matter how many codes and tropes usually associated with romantic movies, the writers and show makers are using.

Add to that the conviction that Disney would never approve Sambucky in a million years, and there you go, I can understand the people who see only friendship.

But, just think about it, if we had the same show, same scenes, same dialogues, but minus the action scenes and the project was being marketed as an Indie movie, would you think they were just friends or a blossoming couple?

If you read Sambucky’s relationship like a friendship: some scenes don't make sense. If you read it like a developing romantic relationship: it all makes sense. "When you hear hoofs, think horse, not zebra" If a writer or a film director chooses a last scene with a romantic setting and the two leads are staring at a sunset, smiling repeatedly at each other and then walking away together with one of them touching the other's neck, with a love song in the background, maybe friendship isn't the first thought they had in mind.

Some people may say “I see them as just friends” and other people may say “ I see them as lovers” and both are fine, because people have different perceptions, and that’s ok.

What I am saying is this post is that the show and the writers are portraying them as more than just friends, they’re portraying them as two characters who are romantically involved.

Perceive what you want but that’s how they are being presented in the show.

Bucky’s therapist said that the exercise she gave them was for couples who want to figure out what kind of life they want to build together. Then, the show ends with Sam and Bucky, staring at a sunset together, looking in the same direction.

What else do you need???

This show had more romance than half of the Marvel projects out there. Not every love story needs a kiss (for now...)

We'll see in their next projects which direction the writers want to go with this. But since it was said that the writer on the movie is the same as the writer from episode 5, there's no doubt in my mind that we'll keep seeing this dynamic. I don't think they would have made the same choices if this had been a movie. But I won't complain that we got this. I hope they keep this going even if it stays subtle like in the show. Just hope they will add one explicit scene where one of the characters acknowledges their relationship. But even if we only ever get this show, it’s already a great love story. Fake SamBucky fans: We love Sam and Bucky as a couple if Steve can't have him in Canon. He's not white or a woman. But until someone better comes along, Sam will do. 😅

I ship SamBucky because Sam choose on his own to search for Bucky after how badly they treated each other with Sam dropkicking Bucky on the street and Bucky ripping off Sam's wings before kicking him off the hellicarrier.

Sam literally went from 'I don't think he's the kind you save. He's the kind you stop' to 'where do we begin' in his steps towards helping bring back Bucky. Steve didn't ask it. Sam volunteered. It's sweet that no matter how much Sam acts like he hates Bucky, he was willing to give up his secure job to search for him. Clearly, he saw Bucky was redeemable enough to risk approaching a guy who normally attacked first and asked questions later.

No matter how much they pretend they can't stand each other, they always find themselves drawn together in a crisis. Whether its fighting a teenager in pjs at an airport or dealing with an alien invasion, Sam and Bucky always had each other's backs.

Sam doesnt need to write out in big letters in the sky that Bucky means everything to him. Sam shows his care in little ways and Bucky is lucky to have someone in his corner to treat him like a person and not a weaponized accessory or just Captain America's best friend. He sees Bucky as Bucky and let's his opinions be known accordingly with no ulterior motives.

Sam is someone who checks in on him without prompting because he recognizes Bucky as a PTSD victim and POW without trying to lecture him like he's one of Sam's patients. Sam defends Bucky automatically against people like John Walker and Zemo. He teases and argues with Bucky like a schoolyard kid with and crush. Fights at his side, trusting Bucky to have his six.

Sam is someone who gives him that little drop of normalcy by welcoming Bucky into his family. He let Bucky around his most vulnerable, precious people because Sam trusts Bucky and wants to show him off to his family.

Bucky showed he cared with how determined he was to give Sam the shield. The fact he considered that shield his only family and Bucky fought to give it to Sam means something that people fail to notice. Bucky could have stolen it for himself. It was his last reminder of Steve; wherever old man Steve is. But he wanted it for Sam because he believed in Sam and he clearly wasn't ready for that kind of responsibility in Infinity Wars.

Bucky gave Sam a whole suitcase full of Wakandian tech, using his last favor from the Dora Milaje because he believed in his man that much. He knew he was on thin ice with them but he needed something to convince Sam that he was the one.

Bucky doesn't trust easy. So for him to put all his trust in Sam time after time. They consuled each other in Endgame. Sam was the only Avenger remaining that kept checking on Bucky despite their supposed bad blood. Bucky willingly opened up to Sam about his nightmares when it was like pulling teeth for Dr. Raynor to open about anything.

When they both refused to acknowledge what they had, Bucky was willing to face off John Walker so that Sam could talk to the terrorists. They argued constantly but Sam and Bucky where never vicious to each other like jaded Sharon Carter was to Bucky. Their arguing was their own love language. Whenever they would say 'I hate you' it had no real fire and is said more with fond annoyance.

Sam worried about Bucky long after Steve disappeared and Bucky gave his blessing the moment he saw old man Steve on the park bench. SamBucky is amazing because they went from two perfect strangers whose only connection was their best friend Steve Rogers; to two petty and in love people who proved they can survive together without Steve as long as they have each other.

Sam Wilson deserves Bucky Barnes and Bucky Barnes deserve Sam Wilson because they can be real with each other and know the other ain't going anywhere.
