A sincere effort to investigate one’s own culture makes a dive into another’s more authentic and palatable, he said.
“It’s frightening to walk into a room with white people who want to talk about Indigenous culture, and want to talk about your culture, and they have nothing to bring to the table,” said Bolden-Newsome, who is married to a white person (Truelove Seeds co-founder Taylor). “Because if you come to a potluck and you don’t have anything, you’re going to eat up all my stuff. That’s fine, I guess, at a potluck. But we’re talking about a spiritual potluck, you know?”
“My ancestors made a choice to be less Italian and to be less Irish, to be less Catholic, to be less ethnic ... to send their kids to be around WASPy people,” Taylor said. “That was the process of becoming white. What does it mean to investigate who you were before that, in the context of a broader racial justice movement? That, I think, gets to the heart of ... a big reason why we do this. This is a challenge to the dominant narrative.

As urban populations boom, urban agriculture is increasingly looked to as a local food source and a way to help combat inequitable food access. But little is known about how productive urban agriculture is compared to conventional, rural farming. A new study digs in, finding urban gardeners and hydroponics can meet and sometimes exceed the yields of rural farms.
“Despite its growing popularity, there’s still quite a lot we don’t know about urban agriculture, like whether the yields are similar to conventional agriculture, or even what crops are commonly grown,” says Florian Payen, an environmental scientist at Lancaster University and lead author of the study, published today in AGU’s journal Earth’s Future.
The new study compiles studies on urban agriculture from 53 countries to find out which crops grow well in cities, what growing methods are most effective, and what spaces can be utilized for growing. The researchers find that urban yields for some crops, like cucumbers, tubers and lettuces, are two to four times higher than conventional farming. Many other urban crops studied are produced at similar or higher rates than in rural settings. Cost efficiency remains an open but important question.
Most studies on urban agriculture have focused on green spaces, such as private and community gardens, parks and field growing operations. Payen’s work includes “gray” spaces — places in cities that are already built but could be used for growing, such as rooftops and building facades. In both green and gray spaces, the study examines a suite of crops grown in soils versus hydroponics, horizontal versus vertical farming, and natural versus controlled conditions.
“Surprisingly, there were few differences between overall yields in indoor spaces and outdoor green spaces, but there were clear differences in the suitability of crop types to different gray spaces,” Payen says. Certain crops like lettuces, kale and broccoli are more naturally suited to be grown vertically in indoor spaces than others. “You can’t exactly stack up apple trees in a five- or ten-layer high growth chamber,” he says, “though we did find one study that managed to grow wheat stacked up like that.”
Other crops, like watery vegetables (e.g., tomatoes) and leafy greens, performed well in hydroponic environments. And crops grown in fully controlled environments can be grown throughout the year, allowing harvests to happen more times per year than in open-air environments, which leads to higher annual yields. But scientists will need to keep studying these systems to plan cost-effective agriculture solutions.
The finding that urban agriculture can have similar or greater yields to conventional agriculture “is exactly what we have been waiting for in the urban agriculture research community,” says Erica Dorr, an environmental scientist at AgroParisTech who was not involved in the study.

SANTIAGO FLORES: sheep. 20. he/him cis dude. fine arts student. absolute sweetheart with a huge family who's been dating jamie for only a few months before the inciting incident of the story (detailed below)
JOHNNY DEAN CLANTON: red appaloosa horse. 21. she/her cis butch. worked on her family's chicken/various other birds farm for a year after high school, then decided to just be a "free spirit" living out of her van and doing odd manual labor jobs for people. she's also an absolute player (with a thing for small carnivores in particular)

the general gist of this story is that everyone here except for santiago knew each other in high school. jamie is best friends with johnny, johnny is briefly dating null, and null is friends with argyle. jamie gets introduced to null through johnny, then gets introduced to argyle through null. jamie is immediately smitten and has a crush on argyle for months
at the end of jamie's junior year/argyle's senior year, jamie finally asks argyle out. argyle says yes, but he's really not that into jamie, he just wants to see what will happen (... and also feels bad for him). over the course of the summer it becomes clear to argyle that this relationship cannot last but he keeps putting off on breaking up with jamie. finally, the day before argyle moves across the country to go to college, he admits to jamie that he was kinda dating him out of pity and breaks up with him. jamie, understandably, loses his fucking mind, blocks argyle on everything after he leaves, and proceeds to have the worst senior year of all time
flash forward a few years. jamie is now a sophomore in college in an animation program. he's got a new beautiful sheep boyfriend named santiago. null, who was only really an acquaintance before, goes to the same college as them and they become better friends. johnny isn't always in town but they still hang out on the regular. jamie is still mad at argyle, because why wouldn't he be, but there's enough good in his life that he doesn't have to focus on his one bad high school relationship
... until argyle, dropping out of his ruthless engineering program, decides to transfer back home. to jamie and co's college. now BOTH of them have to deal with feelings that have built over the past three years as seeing each other becomes almost unavoidable. jamie has to grapple with the fact that he can't be mad at argyle forever, and argyle is forced to actually deal with the fact that he hurt someone like that instead of just hoping they've gotten over it
... ok wow i did not expect to type that much. i scripted a comic of jamie seeing argyle for the first time in three years in a frenzy a few weeks ago, and i've been telling myself that i HAVE to do a longer comic (and by longer i mean like. more than 3 pages) with my ocs this year, so hopefully i'll start working on that soon. i'm also gonna make a separate Lore Post about my furryverse because there's some silly stuff i've come up with for it. anyway ENJOY

Opinion on Arkos?
Ah Arkos, the ship that lives on long after being sunk.
But honestly, I would probably say it's the most well done romance in RWBY, despite the fact it never got past a kiss. For now at least.
And it's easy to see why Arkos is still so popular. Jaune and Pyrrha's personalities do work well together. Even if the initial attraction was fairly shallow, that tends to be the case usually anyways. And I do think that they did a pretty decent job of having Pyrrha and Jaune grow very close.
It's a cute ship. Lot's of great fan art and fics featuring it.
That being said, it is probably my second least favorite of all the Jaune x RWBY/JNPR ships. And it doesn't really have much to do with the ship itself.
You see, I didn't get into RWBY until Volume 7 was being released. And I was introduced to RWBY by a youtuber I watched at the time. I think it was some video about the volume 7 designs. So I kind of got spoiled on Pyrrha's death before I actually started watching the show.
Which has kind of resulted in me not really getting very attached to Pyrrha or really have much interest in any of her ships. The only exception to that being Greek Fire.
If I would've gotten into the show when it was first releasing, or just without spoilers, I probably would've liked it a lot more. I probably still would've preferred Lancaster, or I might have been pretty hard on the Gilded Rose bandwagon.
But the way I was introduced to Arkos, I think it serves it's purpose well. I'd kind of prefer if they actually let Pyrrha rest in peace, but that doesn't have much to do with the ship itself. But I have little interest in writing any sort of long farm narrative with it or really seeking out any fan content of it.
Also it suffers the cardinal sin of being a partner-ship. So that's an automatic -1 for me.
Also I find the trope of Jaune never really moving on from Pyrrha to be annoying. But I've never really been a fan of angst for the sake of angst anyways, so eh.
So in conclusion, Arkos is probably the most well done ship in RWBY at the moment, but due to a lot of external factors I don't really care about it that much.
