art is fucking stupid. objectively it should be easier to draw one species (human) than to learn how to draw several mammal species and adapt them to a bipedal stance. so why have i hated most of the human art ive done the past few months. make it make sense

yet another person has fallen victim to my furry beam... ericdoa is now in the hmfcu (hivemind furry cinematic universe) as a ring-tailed lemur. i was so stumped on what to make him and then i realized i've never given someone a lemur sona or even made a lemur oc despite really liking them. i had to remedy that

also when i asked people if they had ideas for his sona literally everyone said 'make him something tiny with huge eyes'. lemurs are small enough and their eyes are pretty striking. works for me

i know i only introduced these guys like 2 weeks ago but i've managed to get emotional about them as if i've had them for years. it's mainly because their actual story is really personal to me... but also i just like them

this is set at the very very end of jamie and argyle's story when they finally make up. texas blue came on while i was finishing my height lineup and it felt so them that it hurt. and then funnily enough easier came on when i finished THIS and that ALSO feels so much like them that it hurts. i don't feel like drawing something for that though

okay hey wait art suggestion time. stop locking yourself in to an art style. especially if you're anyone whos still in/under highschool. but even then stop fucking doing that.

theres nothing wrong with having a preferred style to draw in (clearly as a guy writing a multi book comic i know. trust that i know) but if you catch yourself thinking 'i cant draw that its not my style' or 'i want to learn to draw like that but its not my style' you gotta knock that shit off

you are not a brand. you are not a company. you are a person learning a skill and how the hell do you know what 'your style' is without trying to learn to draw in different ones? please do style studies. please try drawing realism even if it looks like shit at first. try doing abstract works. you dont have to like them but im begging you at least to try, because the things you learn carry over into your main body of work. and youll see yourself grow in ways you didnt think you could 'in your style'.

@jetstarred idk if this was rhetorical or not but i will give you my personal tips and tricks regardless

rendering is basically just sculpting with light. youre trying to make a 2d object look 3d and you gotta make the lights and shadows look like theyre matching the form to get that effect (i think its actually better shown in this other jane drawing i did). you will get good at this by just drawing stuff from refs and looking at how light hits stuff irl

generally the lit-up parts of a drawing are more important for showing detail while the parts in shadow are more important for showing form

a more normal artist would tell you to block out all your most basic lights and shadows first before getting more detailed. this is probably what you should do. however i dont do that because i get bored that way i literally just completely finish rendering different chunks of the piece until it all comes together

speaking of details. its so easy to get bogged down in trying to make something super detailed. you can avoid that by using a medium-to-big brush and not changing its size at all. i still use pen pressure, so theres some variation in size, buuuuut whatever its good enough. im weird so my coloring brush is 33 px instead of like, a more normal number like a multiple of 5

i guess another way to avoid getting bogged down by details is using a brush that doesnt blend. but i mostly use non-blending brushes simply cus i feel crazy when i dont have full control of my colors

ummmm idk what else. when in doubt you can just scribble some shit on top of your normal rendering to make stuff stand out more. using that other jane piece as an example again, i did normal rendering then added all those bright yellow lines to really bring out her hair and nose

ok thats it. if you want to see the way i render "in action" ig i have two speedpaints here and here. i saved another quad photo to redraw so i might do a speedpaint of that too whenever i get around to it. love you bye (said in the same tone as someone ending a phone call)

important character trait i cooked up for null is that they're normal about all their opinions EXCEPT their opinions on music. they were a scourge upon the rym userbase (and then on the aoty userbase once they got banned). eventually they give up on music review sites and start their own neocities that no one reads. they're terminally online they're toxic they're watching furry hivemind and typing tomatoes in their premiere chats on the regular

dorian furryverse EXCLUSIVE LORE

as i mentioned in the prev posts here is a bit of lore for my furry universe. this setting is supposed to be my break from lore-heavy work... but i still made some stuff up because i'm me and that's what i do. ok here we go

in this universe, only terrestrial mammals (and semi-terrestrial mammals like pinnipeds) are sapient. trichechids and cetaceans are not sapient. this is because i really really really don't feel like trying to adapt fully aquatic beasts and other animal classes to a terrestrial bipedal body plan... and i want my guys to have SOMETHING to eat that's not mammalian

birds and reptiles have basically filled in every niche left unoccupied by terrestrial mammals. i will refrain from going spec bio mode on this. most i'll do is revive some extinct reptiles based on if it's cool and/or funny to put them in

since the furries are all terrestrial mammals (which usually can't digest lactase in adulthood) they don't eat dairy. however i still want them to have the joy of cheeses. so in this universe there's a weird genus of bug that's been domesticated to make something milk-like that can be processed into something cheese-like. carnivores tend to digest it easier than herbivores but both groups can eat it

i didn't want to go full zootopia mode and make every furry the same size as their normal animal counterpart, but i still wanted some variation. in my head i class every species i draw as "small" "medium" or "large" and then give a size based on vibes. generally the lower limit of height is 3 feet (stuff like rodents and shrews) and the upper limit of height is 8 feet (stuff like elephants and giraffes)

different species can interbreed but it's only within their taxonomic families. mammal families vary wildly in size which makes this really fun for me. for example santiago from the last post is in family bovidae which has 143 extant species. he's got cousins who are goats, bison, antelope, muskoxen, etc. meanwhile jamie is in prionodontidae which only has 2 extant species. his family tree is only linsangs. also i don't feel like dealing with hybrids or actual genetics so when two species interbreed there's just a simple 50/50 chance between whether the kid will be the mom or dad's species

this universe is parallel to ours in terms of pop culture and such. i want to be able to have characters who watch furry hivemind and listen to furry quadeca. its important to me

ok i think thats all i got for now. another part of why i'm sticking to mammals is because i took mammalogy last year so i just know more about them. lord willing i will be taking ornithology next year so maybe after that class i'll make a parallel universe where birds and reptiles are the sapient ones. anyway ENJOY

sketchbook dump to accompany jamie and co's long ass intro post

descriptions and such below

this is like the first thing i drew of the main cast together (before i had designs for null and argyle) because that dialogue popped into my head and got stuck there. this was also before i decided on everyone's heights which is why it might look weird

i mentioned in the intro post's tags that argyle is named after a brakence song. i also decided to make this universe's pop culture parallel to ours so i could draw fursonas ive made for musicians and e-celebs in-universe. this means that argyle by brakence exists in-universe and if jamie ever heard it it would drive him up the fucking wall

argyle and jamie make up by the end of their story and become friends again. idk the exact circumstances except that it happens on the beach outside a party. this is the moment before they actually make up, where they both want to talk but don't know what to say

just argyle drawings. way way back in his genetic code he was modeled after namjoon from bts and he still wears long cardigan type things like namjoon does

null works at a grocery store so they should be allowed to not only make death threats on the job, but act on them as well

figuring out how to draw jamie is going to be a bit of a struggle because i'm so used to drawing mustelids... but he is not a mustelid he is a different type of Long Mammal. even here i accidentally gave him ferret riley's ears on instinct. at the end of the day though i am my own biggest critic and probably the only nerd who would get mad at someone drawing prionodontids incorrectly

half the reason i gave everyone more variable heights is so johnny could sling jamie over her shoulder like that with no problem. real homies carry their friends around like sacks of potatoes

JAMIE NAM: banded linsang. 19. he/him tboy. animation student. he is a nervous wreck and kind of a cringe failboy but by god he's trying his best

SANTIAGO FLORES: sheep. 20. he/him cis dude. fine arts student. absolute sweetheart with a huge family who's been dating jamie for only a few months before the inciting incident of the story (detailed below)

JOHNNY DEAN CLANTON: red appaloosa horse. 21. she/her cis butch. worked on her family's chicken/various other birds farm for a year after high school, then decided to just be a "free spirit" living out of her van and doing odd manual labor jobs for people. she's also an absolute player (with a thing for small carnivores in particular)

NULL: blue point siamese cat. 20. they/them agender. chemistry student and pawblix (furry version of publix) cashier. they are actually friends with people, but they're also great at lying and generally pretending to get along with people they hate. needs a smoke break

ARGYLE LANCASTER: lion. 21. he/him cis dude. engineering student who burnt out and decided to go into fashion design instead. chill and agreeable to a fault, he will go with whoever else's flow even if it ends up hurting him (or someone else)

the general gist of this story is that everyone here except for santiago knew each other in high school. jamie is best friends with johnny, johnny is briefly dating null, and null is friends with argyle. jamie gets introduced to null through johnny, then gets introduced to argyle through null. jamie is immediately smitten and has a crush on argyle for months

at the end of jamie's junior year/argyle's senior year, jamie finally asks argyle out. argyle says yes, but he's really not that into jamie, he just wants to see what will happen (... and also feels bad for him). over the course of the summer it becomes clear to argyle that this relationship cannot last but he keeps putting off on breaking up with jamie. finally, the day before argyle moves across the country to go to college, he admits to jamie that he was kinda dating him out of pity and breaks up with him. jamie, understandably, loses his fucking mind, blocks argyle on everything after he leaves, and proceeds to have the worst senior year of all time

flash forward a few years. jamie is now a sophomore in college in an animation program. he's got a new beautiful sheep boyfriend named santiago. null, who was only really an acquaintance before, goes to the same college as them and they become better friends. johnny isn't always in town but they still hang out on the regular. jamie is still mad at argyle, because why wouldn't he be, but there's enough good in his life that he doesn't have to focus on his one bad high school relationship

... until argyle, dropping out of his ruthless engineering program, decides to transfer back home. to jamie and co's college. now BOTH of them have to deal with feelings that have built over the past three years as seeing each other becomes almost unavoidable. jamie has to grapple with the fact that he can't be mad at argyle forever, and argyle is forced to actually deal with the fact that he hurt someone like that instead of just hoping they've gotten over it

... ok wow i did not expect to type that much. i scripted a comic of jamie seeing argyle for the first time in three years in a frenzy a few weeks ago, and i've been telling myself that i HAVE to do a longer comic (and by longer i mean like. more than 3 pages) with my ocs this year, so hopefully i'll start working on that soon. i'm also gonna make a separate Lore Post about my furryverse because there's some silly stuff i've come up with for it. anyway ENJOY

im posting new ocs for the first time in forever on tuesday and i am very excited. they are technically remakes of human ocs i had for years that i didnt know what to do with... and then the moment i made them into furries i wanted to draw them 462956290572197548309374 times and came up with way more detailed backstories/character relationships/etc for them than they ever had before. insane what making someone into a funny animal can do for my brain
