Notes: I don't know if you guys have seen the postgame trailer for Scarlet and Violet yet, but I am SO excited to see Arven and the gang again :D

I won't spoil anything, but if you've played both DLCs, you should be able to find the postgame trailer somewhere on YouTube!

Drayton and Kieran Rivalry, plus Arven is visiting

Drayton and Kieran kinda REALLY hate each other. They were already off to a bad start when Kieran beat Drayton and started acting like an asshole, but even after Kieran's redemption arc, Drayton doesn't trust him, not even for a second. Them finding out they both had a crush on the same person amped up the tension even more.

Drayton is slightly clingier around you when Kieran is there. He lets his arm linger on your shoulder for a couple moments longer, but not enough to make anyone suspicious.

Kieran is hostile when he and Drayton are in the same room together. His tone is colder, sharper. He looks pissed off too. The two of them don't fight, they just glare menacingly at each other from across the room.

Things were already tense before Arven showed up, but Arven being there made it ten times worse...

Arven greets you like an old friend. I mean, you are literally his friend, after all- but Drayton is the first to notice and he's immediately suspicious of Arven.

Drayton questions Arven in subtle, yet prying ways. Asks how he and you met, if he considers you a friend, if he really cares for you, all that stuff.

Drayton is also the first to battle Arven after you have your turn battling the sandwich boy. His dragon pokemon seem to understand how Drayton feels, and they are ferocious in battle. Arven loses, but still puts up a good fight.

Kieran, on the other hand... he destroys Arven in battle. His eyes are dark and brooding the whole time, and he doesn't speak unless giving commands to his pokemon. To say he's furious is putting it lightly.

Drayton and Kieran form an unspoken truce of sorts with each other. They make excuses to hang out with you, making sure to exclude Arven or steal your attention away from him whenever possible.

Even if Arven were to reveal he only cares for you platonically, they need to hear it from you as well. And even if you confirm that you don't like Arven that way, their jealousy is still present. It simmers down for sure though, mostly on Drayton's end. Kieran is still quite jealous, and makes it known he and Arven do not care for you the same way.

But if Arven also likes you romantically? Then oh boy... he's in for a heap of trouble. Drayton is persistently by your side every chance he gets, and Kieran is always glaring at Arven when he's around. Poor Arven does NOT feel welcome in the slightest. You try to reassure him that they're just a little protective of you, to which Arven responds, "Only a LITTLE? Y/N, I think they want me dead!"

Kuro's Advice for Awesome Fight Scenes

So I heard you want to write a cool fight scene. Rock on.

Running into some trouble though? No sweat, I got you covered.

I compiled this list of 8 Rules I personally use for Kickass Action Scenes for a Discord group of writers and thought it might be useful for others as well.

Rule #1 Fight scenes MUST tell an emotional story.

A fight is just an argument but with physical violence instead of words. Just like how in a musical people talk until the energy and emotion goes so high they burst into song and then when that keeps building, they all start dancing. Same concept. People argue and disagree until the emotion is so high they start throwing hands.

Fights act like any other scene where it starts with one emotion and ends with another. Emotion should flow through each move. They should ebb and flow from start to finish, raising and lowering tension to keep a reader engaged and guessing over who is going to win.

This is the bedrock of fight scenes. No amount of “rule of cool” is going to save the scene if there is no emotional heart beating through it.

Rule #2 You need personal stakes

Goes kit and parcel with Rule #1. Your POV characters have to have something on the line to tell an emotional story.

What happens if they lose? What happens if they WIN?

Go beyond JUST “oh if they lose, they die”. What happens to the character’s world if they lose. What will happen to the ones they love when they’re gone? What are the TRUE long term consequences for failure?

Even if it's a friendly (ie non lethal) competition scene, what are those stakes? Bragging rights for a proud character? Or perhaps taking their opponent down a peg?

Avoid vague generalized stakes and find what makes it personal. A knight may fight for his king and country but he also does it because he has his pride as a knight on the line if he walks away or loses.

Rule #3 Pacing is key

Action is fast paced in real life. It should be so in writing.

I personally think of my fight scenes as if they were a movie/show/play fight scene. Partly because that’s my own personal experience and partly because it helps me with pacing, especially with multiple POV characters.

Don’t spend too long on one action. Keep it flowing but have moments of pause. Real fights have moments where someone needs to pick themselves back up or two opponents need to steady themselves for the next round of assault. Use those moments to dig into the introspection of the POV. Your reader is also gonna need a breather from time to time.

With multiple POVs, I flip through them like I’m switching shots on film. We cut away from one thing to see what another character is up to in the flow of things. I flip the camera at moments of triumph or tension to keep building that emotion.

Rule #4 Let your heroes take some hits

Show off those stakes by letting your big bad character get his ass kicked a little bit.

Let ‘em get knocked around a bit to build that tension within a reader. Make them wonder how they’ll pull this off.

Superman fights are so easy to be boring because he’s basically invincible. We all yawn because we know he’s gonna win. Then along comes someone with kryptonite and suddenly it's Superman getting the beat down. Now we’re emotionally engaged because how is he going to get out of this one?

Show their competency in a fight by how well they can take big, painful hurts and keep going anyway. Show it in how they fight back or stay standing, despite the effort.

And don’t be afraid to let your heroes lose a few times. It makes their eventual victory sweeter.

Rule #5 Be clear and concise with your descriptions

Now ain’t the time to pull out your best Tolkien describing a meal impressions.

Action is fast. There are a ton of moving parts which can be severely complex and hard to follow. You want to avoid this confusion at all costs.

Use clear, specific language so the reader can visualize what is happening in their head and not get lost. Once they get lost, they will get frustrated and disengage.

Ditch the heavy metaphors. Let the movement speak for itself as the allegory. If you want to sprinkle in some flowery language, do so separate from the actual action happening in a fight.

Rule #6 Learn the basics of movement

You don’t need to know how to swing a sword with proper technique to write a sword fight (though, let’s be real, it helps). As long as you understand the fundamentals of how the weapon moves, you can write a good sword fight.

Because what makes a fight good is the EMOTION in the fight. Not just the fancy flourishes.

However, if you go too crazy and it becomes unrealistic, your readers can easily disengage.

So you don’t need to know the difference between a riposte and an ochs stance. You just need to know that arms don’t swing that way. You need to know if someone gets pushed, it can throw them off balance.

Learn the basics of human movement, and if there are weapons involved, learn at least the basics because if I see one more person say they’re wielding a longsword like it’s a small sword, you people will kill me inside even more.

Rule #7 Every action has a consequence

When someone attacks, someone has to defend (or get hit). But when someone moves their body one way, it can open them up to a counterattack.

If I lunge too far forward and overextend, I’ve left myself open for attack. If an opponent turns around, their back is now my next best target.

Pay attention to how your characters are moving. Are they opening themselves up for easy counterattacks when you don’t want them to? 

Thinking about what opening a move gives their opponent can help you write your fight scenes, as it will lead to a natural flow and chain of events.

Rule #8 Don’t be afraid to add sound

Fights are vocal. People grunt and groan and shout when they’re hit. They also make noise when they attack. The more wrapped in emotion, the louder and noisier people tend to get as they get lost in it.

During those moments of pause you add from Rule #3 is a great moment for characters to continue the verbal part of their argument

 If one character temporarily overpowers the other, let them brag. If one character gets punched in the mouth, describe the sound of the blood they spit on the ground. 

Just, for the love of the gods, don’t go all Marvel and be quip central. Don’t undercut your own tension and emotion for a quick laugh or to sound cool.

It’s not a particularly good misdirection when the rest of the family has caught them together in various stages of undress (and that one time in a dress). But it’s the thought that counts, they think.

Jason comes down and drops himself into a chair, trying not to reach down and touch where the imprint of Bruce's teeth leaves his inner thighs still throbbing from the bite. He doesn’t look over to Bruce because Jason knows he won’t be able to hold back from making a comment about how Bruce is wearing yet another black turtleneck.

At the head of the table, Bruce is just trying not to recount every single hickey Jason left on him, spanning from his throat to his hips and then even further down still. None of them a claim so much as an ownership made stamped and branded into him when they have settled in so deep.

4. Mirror I Cannot Avoid (ORV dokhyuk, 'modern' AU)

They meander home to their shared apartment, with some difficulty. Yoo Joonghyuk continuously grabs at Kim Dokja’s ass, eventually settling his hand into the back pocket of his pants. Kim Dokja, for his part, lazily weaves the hand not gripping Yoo Joonghyuk’s shirt through his partner’s hair. He tugs directionally when they need to make a turn down darkened streets towards home. It’s sloppy, how they manage to even enter the apartment is beyond Kim Dokja. He feels lucky that at least one of them didn’t lose their key.

5. Commit Ballad (ORV dokhyuk, mid-scenario canon divergence)

It starts as a simple peck, and then he’s pressing against me with more force. Asking, almost begging me to reciprocate. I meekly move my lips against his and it feels pathetic, but Yoo Joonghyuk only seems to grow more forward with the confirmation. One hand grasps my hip and pulls our bodies flush together.

6. Take Care (ORV kim dokja whump, fic scenario continuation)

“Okay.” Kim Dokja breathes for a moment. “Did he say anything about jumping?” “No?” Kim Dokja leans his arms back behind himself on the bed, chest open and throat bared as he looks up at the ceiling. “Well that’s the entire point here. I think… My first thoughts over this situation were something like, ‘when i jumped out of my classroom window, before waking up in the hospital, maybe my consciousness jumped to here.’” Yoo Joonghyuk’s muscles tense next to him.

Yoo Joonghyuk and Kim Dokja bodily jolt as they take in the scenario window on the computer screen. One of them pushes the device away, though they’re not sure who, in their triggered state of shock.  They jump again from their place next to each other on the couch at the sound of a groan from behind. Han Sooyoung stands by the back of the couch with her hands crossed in front of her chest. “Hate those things…” She grumbles to herself as the men in front of her slowly turn to look back in awe. “What?” She takes in their look of terror with immense skepticism. “They annoy me, what’s your problem?” Yoo Joonghyuk stands up, leaves the living room, and throws his entire self face-down on the bed in the adjacent room. Maybe they imagine the muffled scream of frustration from the often composed man.

8. I Begged You Everything (ORV dokhyuk, NSFW)

Kim Dokja snorts out a shocked laugh. “What? You’d bottom?” “Yes.” Yoo Joonghyuk leans back, towering above him with hands splayed over his chest, covering each nipple. Well, Kim Dokja was not expecting that. In the mental scenarios he was running through, none of them left Yoo Joonghyuk, massive ego and all, deferring to him. It’s with a flush of warm affection that Kim Dokja realizes Yoo Joonghyuk really would do anything for him. “You would… want that?” He asks, to make sure.

9. Van Gogh (DCMK, kaishinshi, BO!shinichi AU)

It’s weird, enough that I make a mental note to look for tools on or around the property once everything is documented.  By the time I return to Heiji, the woman’s body has been processed and removed; the taped outline of her creating a dismal caricature on the floor.  It’s then that the victim’s boyfriend sprints in from the hallway. Disheveled, dark stains lining below the knees of his jeans. His eyes rake across the living room in rapid tracks, terrified of reality.

10. Fall (ORV, kim dokja can sing AU)

Bravado returned by the nature of the skill, Kim Dokja looks back at the man restraining him. “Joonghyuk-ah,” He says smoothly.  Yoo Joonghyuk immediately activates ‘Eye of the Sage’ in response. It may bounce completely off of Kim Dokja’s main skill, but ‘Siren’s Tongue’ is separate from the Fourth Wall. He centers himself and sees through whatever bullshit Kim Dokja was starting to spew. “Kim Dokja.” Yoo Joonghyuk can hear the muttered ‘fuck’ under the other’s breath. “We need to talk.”

For the Laicion nation (aka, me and three other people)

I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).

The general pitch is as follows :

AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.

In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.

One time you walked in on him petting it - one of the rare occasions you ever saw him smile.

Loves when the cat sits on his lap while he's in his armchair by the fire, sipping on a glass of wine. An adorable image, and his favourite kind of self-care.

It will rub itself against his beard all the time. Who can blame it?

Needs at least one new outfit a week since the cat will always wreck the feather of his hat or scratch his leather clothes.

Talks to it with a way higher voice than usually, and yes, he does babytalk.

Is pretty chill about standard annoying cat behavior. This pet will be misbehaving a lot since he just takes everything with a smile. Can't really be mad at all.

It will probably have a standard seat on his shoulder and loves hiding under his cape.

Always buys snacks when he's on land and even shares his meal with it.

Talks about the cat as if it's an actual person, and talks a lot. Literally his new bestie, you're almost jealous.

This animal has seen some shit. He'll definetly not go anywhere without it and do some weird party tricks when drunk.

Would protect it with his life, certainly.

Poor guy is actually a lil' bit allergic, but endures for your and it's sake.

It follows him around despite his best efforts not to. He gets used to it quickly however and starts talking to it. It helps him get his thoughts in order, actually.

Lets you keep it in the end because this man just can't say no to any of your wishes. Won't admit it though, probably says it's because they're useful to catch mice on the ship or something.

Throws a tantrum at least once a day, especially when the cat got anywhere near his maps.

Unsuccessfully tries to teach it any tricks for them to participate in the circus.

Is often caught juggling for it and acts like the cat just happened to be there while he was practicing.

It's an open secret that he adores this animal. It's also the only one allowed to sit on his throne besides him.

Indulges it as good as he can. Only the best food, it's own room in the mansion and always new toys.

Always nerds out some biological or historical facts about those animals.

Loves to absentmindedly stroke it's fur whenever it sits on his lap. Looks like a Bond villain when doing so.

I think she needs to relax and get taken down 1 peg maybe, and I think he needs like…….. Someone to teach him what is unhealthy lmao, also remind him to get work benefits, and if they can like get to feel safe and comfy with one another (and god just the road there would be a beautiful trainwreck to watch) they would be gossip besties worsties.

Kabru needs to be the epitome of morals but like, if it’s Mickbell she can lower the bar… Just for him… <3 She can fix him just a little and she’ll be like "wow! Ok I can settle for this amount of upstanding behavior from you Mickbell you get a gold star"

I never expected it ok I read this extra expecting nothing and god knows why I saw him be like "hey u like Kabru right. You’re his babysitter right. Which poor sap is being Kabru’s maid" with 0 fear and her being so casually pissed back at him and idk, how they’re so comfy being not polite with one another but they’re still coworkers-friends despite it… Crazy for how prickly they both are that they manage that much. BBA League and Kitakami siblings meet Arven, Nemona, and Penny!

Unsurprisingly, Amarys and Lacey are the ones who have to handle flight details and travel preparations. Amarys is SCARY good at organization-- she makes sure everyone arrives on time, even Drayton. (Though it was quite a struggle to get him out of bed.)

Drayton and Arven are like your older brother figures, in a sense. They're both protective of you in their own ways. So when they meet, there's tension in the air as they both realize they care for you in that way. They shake hands, though you could swear their smiles are a bit more strained than usual... Must be your imagination though.

Crispin and Arven get along really well! They both love making food, so they instantly bond over that. Crispin lets Arven try some of his food, to which Arven nearly dies on the spot from how spicy it is-- but Arven gives Crispin a shaky thumbs-up, and Crispin is overjoyed!

Lacey is ALL over Penny, fawning over Penny's cute clothing, especially that adorable Eevee backpack!! Penny is a bit surprised and taken aback at first, but they get along well enough and they share a taste in cute fashion.

Kieran and Nemona have this uh... weird standoff. "So, you're Y/N's first rival? You must be pretty strong then." Kieran says, his expression unreadable. His hand is already clutching his pokeball.

Nemona goes from nervous to excited IMMEDIATELY. "NO WAY!! You're the one Y/N keeps talking about?! We have GOT to battle. Let's go to the battle court now!!" She grabs his hand and instantly runs off with him.

Arven raises an eyebrow as he watches them run off. "Typical Nemona." He sighs. Suddenly, Carmine shoves him out of the way with a determined look on her face. "What are we waiting for?! Let's go watch!" She exclaims. Penny just gives a small shrug and grabs a snack from her bag. "Snacks are on me."

Amarys, whose face is usually quite still-- watches the battle nervously. "I have not seen Kieran this fired up in a while." She comments quietly, pushing up her glasses. "I cannot help feeling a bit excited and nervous myself. The outcome of this battle will be interesting."

Kieran manages to pull off a win, though it's definitely a close battle. He's breathing heavily by the end of it, looking exhausted yet determined. To his surprise, Nemona walks up to him and offers her hand. "That was an awesome battle, dude! Kitakami trainers sure are something else!" She says with a smile.

Kieran hesitantly shakes her hand. "...Thanks." is all he says before he walks off and excuses himself to go to the Pokemon Center. Nemona laughs it off-- "I guess he's just a quiet kid!" She says.

Drayton cheers in the background. "Woo-hoo, let's go Kieran! He wasn't our former champ of BBA for nothing!" He exclaims before Carmine swiftly elbows him in the stomach.

Overall, it's an enjoyable trip! And of course, it wouldn't be a trip without Miraidon/Koraidon there to steal some of the food.
