Du wirkst wie die Sonne, wie ein Licht. Ich dachte immer, ich wäre die Sonne. Und ich war es auch, aber jetzt weiß ich das es daran lag, wo ich war. In einer Welt voller dunkelheit, kann ich nur als einzige Strahlen. Weil ich das halt auch nicht bin, nicht wie sie. Aber du, du bist viel mehr am Strahlen. Du blendest mich fast.

Du hast absolut keine Ahnung, wer ich bin, was ich bin und woher ich komme und welche Wege ich in meinem Leben gelaufen bin, glaub mir. Das war nicht immer schön. Ziemlich selten eigentlich. Ich habe Dinge gesehen, erlebt, getan, zugelassen, ich habe Menschen belogen, sie hintergangen, kriminelle geschützt. Ich hab geweint, tausend Mal mein lachen verloren, tausend Mal versucht aufzugeben. Ich hab's niemals geschafft. Ich hab's wirklich versucht.

Vielleicht hat mir das Sicherheit gegeben, die Welt in der ich gelebt habe, strahlen zu können, weil hey, wer hätte von diesen verlorenen Menschen schon eine Konkurrenz sein können?

Mich hat nie jemand beeindruckt, nie jemand dazu gebracht zu glauben das mein Leben sich ändert, durch diese Person. Im Gegenteil, es wurde immer schlimmer, immer so schlimm bis ich gekämpft habe, ich hab immer gewonnen, okay, ist schonmal was

Aber wieso verdammt, strahlst du? Wieso bist du auf einmal da und wieso, tust du mir gut?

Mir geht's doch momentan gar nicht so gut, wenn wir ehrlich sind, wissen wir das beide. Ich denke ich bin ganz okay, aber all das was du hier Grade mit mir machst ist schon zuviel, als das du dass fallen lassen kannst jetzt. Ich warne dich jetzt einfach, bevor das ganze aus dem Ruder läuft. Zu spät ist.

Ich bin alles andere, als Ruhe, ich bin Chaos, mein Kopf ist nicht sortiert, ich bin eine Mischung aus einem teenie-Emogirl für immer, was gleichzeitig den miesesten Rap feiert und Balladen und Soul singt und sich nirgendwo angekommen fühlt, sich selbst seit Jahren nicht findet, sich tausend Mal auf die Fresse legt oder irgendwo gegen läuft, sich nach zwei Tagen fragt wo die ganzen blauen Flecken her kommen und ich mache unlustige Witze den ganzen Tag.

Ich bin tausend Mal verloren in meinem Kopf und vergesse eigentlich die Hälfte von dem, was ich nicht vergessen sollte. Ich hab das ganze nie gelernt, wie das Leben so funktioniert.

Aber du kannst das, mir geht's Grad auch nicht gut, weil mich das überfordert. Sehr. Vor kurzem hab ich mich fast wieder auf etwas eingelassen, einfach damit ich nicht das Gefühl habe ich mache irgendetwas falsch, was mich sowieso irgendwann umgebracht hätte. War auf dem Weg, früher oder später wäre das darauf hinaus gelaufen. Ich mag dieses Leben nicht, ich bin alles andere als glücklich. 0,0%.

Ich weiß das diese Menschen mich nicht weiter bringen und das ich mehr will, aber kannst du dir vorstellen das jemand, der seinen Kram alles so zusammen hat, mich Überfordert? Du kannst mich nicht mögen, das ist gar nicht möglich. Das ist irgendein Fehler dann im System. Das ist wie minus und plus, das passt nicht.

Und irgendwie erinnerst Du mich daran, auf welchem Weg ich damals war, was dann alles passiert ist und welchen Weg ich gegangen bin aber das ich nicht aufgegeben habe. Du erinnerst mich an Sonnenschein, an Sonnenblumen, an Frieden.

Ich dachte immer, ich wäre die verdammte Sonne. Aber neben dir, bin ich vielleicht nur noch eine vernarbte, verdornte Rose. Und du, du bist der Grund wieso Sonnenblumen, meine Lieblingsblumen seit Jahren sind.

The chaos and absurdity of the beat on “Comfort of my Car”--my #1 rap pick--always brings to mind my continuing, frantic attempt at navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. But DJ Lucas sounds in control; undaunted, exuberant, hopeful? Makes me feel good. The only times I really remember forgetting about the pandemic involved smoking weed and listening to Lucas and Papo2oo4′s Dirty Designer. Babyface Ray, Yeat, and Veeze seem to be the best rappers right now, although Veeze didn’t release much this year. Mach-Hommy’s record was phenomenal. Big Wan in the 50th spot because it seems so senseless to “rank” his music. So much death this year, but his hit me harder than most.

Warum erzählt jeder Rapper dieselbe Geschichte?

Ob jung oder alt, Mann oder Frau:

Hat lange Musik gemacht, arm, vielleicht kriminell, keine moralische Unterstützung bekommen, definiert Erfolg nur als Geld, liebt Sex aber hasst alle Frauen außer Mama und/oder Freundin, will König im Rap sein, redet nur über eigene Erfolge und Projekte wie ein Größenwahnsinniger.

Wir recyclen die Trends aus anderen Ländern.

Am meisten aus den USA, aber auch Nachbarländern wie Frankreich und England.

Wir sind ein Land voller Ausländer, aber wir teilen unsere Herkunft nur als Flagge auf Insta oder bei Sportarten. Unsere Herkunft ist erst dann wichtig, wenn jemand aus diesem Land berühmt wird oder wenn wir ein anderes Land hassen sollen, das Probleme mit unserem Land hat.

Ich wünschte mir, dass die Musik über alle möglichen Themen redet, die uns wirklich beschäftigen:

Mieten, Depressionen, Freundschaften, Schwiegerfamilie, Haustiere, Prüfungsangst, Pfandflaschen und so weiter..

Immer mehr Marken werden genannt, die ich nie besessen habe. Ich kenn das nicht mal mehr vom Namen! Machen Musikvideos auf ner Yacht und ner Villa und reden über struggles. Am schlimmsten, sind diejenigen Künstler die die Häuser und Autos on den Videos mieten, aber so tun als wär das deren Eigentum!

Wie hilft mir Fiji Wasser , um Verstorbene zu trauern? Warum muss die Frau einen falschen, teuren und unerreichbaren Barbiekörper haben, bevor man sie atttaktiv nennt?

Warum beschweren sich die Musiker nicht einmal mehr über Rassismus und erfüllen so viele Stereotype wie möglich für so viel Geld wie möglich?

Alle sagen sie sind "real", ehrlich, aufrichtig, offen und toleranten Menschen.

Aber es gibt fast keine dicken Musiker, keine Menschen mit Rollstuhl, Schwarze und Frauen sind nie die grössten Stars und so viele Menschen sehen nie Leute, die wie sie selbst aussehen oder dieselben Dinge machen und glauben.

Warum nicht?

Pray for Haiti / Mach-Hommy (Griselda Records, 2021)

On one of his most ambitious and definitive projects, Mach-Hommy reunites with Westside Gunn and puts on an unforgettable clinic with his razor-sharp bars and an exceptional eye for detail.

On Pray for Haiti’s opening song, “The 26th Letter,” Mach-Hommy raps about a sort of alchemy: “It’s crazy what y’all can do with some old Polo and ebonics.” The spectral Newark rapper’s work blurs the sounds and images of past lives, be they rap songs from his adolescence or his ancestors dating back generations. He will interpolate Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album cuts then slip into Haitian Creole, nod to ritualistic healing practices and then to Thirstin Howl III. His slang and diction shift depending on the narrator, depending on the mood, the beat, the threat or the plea being conveyed. His work is not designed to be decoded; its success does not hinge on the listener knowing which words or cadences are borrowed from Vol. 3 or Mm..Food?, or on the Creole being translated exactly. Mach reveals himself slowly, through allusion and immersion, an image loading grainily. Pray for Haiti is his most ambitious, definitive project since his 2016 masterpiece Haitian Body Odor, a collage rendered in full.

Pray for Haiti is a reunion with Westside Gunn, the Buffalo rapper whose Griselda collective included Mach before the two had a falling out. Gunn serves as executive producer and raps three times, though his added value is clearest when he shows up to ad-lib under Mach’s verses or talk neo-Puff shit between them. Mach has long been a chameleon, rapping or singing over some of the drumless loops that are a staple of the post-Marcberg underground, but also beats that are far more punishing, or far more maximal; the unifier has been a jagged mix. (On “Makrel Jaxon,” he speaks directly to that omnivorous streak: “Next tape might hear me sliding on flamenco/Or calypso/Maybe you should tip-toe.”) The beats he and Gunn have assembled here—mostly from Griselda mainstays like Cee Gee, Camoflauge Monk, and Denny Laflare, plus, notably, three in succession from Kansas City’s Conductor Williams—are varied enough to draw out of Mach each of his many styles: see “Magnum Band” and its low growl, the deceptively rich vocal arrangement on “Kriminel”’s chorus, the way “Makrel Jaxon” sounds like a copy of Donuts that was left out in the rain.

Broken into discrete parts, Mach’s rapped verses would seem more conventional than they end up being: They are full of de rigueur punchlines, clever similes that were once the default setting for East Coast rappers. Some of these are ordinary (“Got lawyers on retainer just like an orthodontist”) and others exceptional (“Lotta these rappers big 12 like March Madness”). But they are stitched together in strange ways and at unexpected times and delivered with a flat affect that draws attention to the fact that the punchline is being placed here, as if he’s creating his own source material to quote and interpolate. And then there’s the level of detail he brings to his records. Mach is worldly the way you imagine a spy would be, or at least upper management in a global oil conglomerate: He knows how to order coffee in Damascus and a hit in Paris, knows which local toughs to muscle out and which to charm into his service.

Mach-Hommy - Pray For Haiti ALBUM REVIEW

I was instantly drawn to Mach-Hommy when I heard him for the first time on Westside Gunn’s King City from the Flygod album in 2016. Literally no one raps like him. Mach was one of the original members of Griselda outside of Westside Gunn and Conway as Benny The Butcher signed with the label after Mach left it in 2017 after releasing his album HBO. I’m still not sure about the reason for why Mach left in 2017 but he and Westside had some sort of falling-out and they went their separate ways. Both parties became even more successful during this 4-year window of time as all three Griselda members are now big-time industry names who have worked with Hip Hop legends and signed deals with both Shady Records and Roc Nation. While not on the same level, Mach basically formed a team of rap-machines with Tha God Fahim and Your Old Droog as all three of them kept churning out new projects in a Griselda fashion. Mach’s level of visibility is much different from Westside’s and the rest of Griselda’s as he is a mysterious person to begin with. He isn’t on social media and most of his music is not on streaming services. Instead, he opts for limited releases of albums that are sold at outrageous prices on his website. For new Mach fans, I highly recommend the aforementioned HBO, Dump Gawd: Hommy Edition and Wap Konn Jòj!. This album Pray For Haiti is significant not only because it is actually on streaming services but it marks the reunion of Mach-Hommy and Westside Gunn as this album was released on Griselda Records and is executive produced by WSG. It also is heavily produced by Camoflauge Monk who did a lot of work on the early Griselda projects so it really is taking it back to the origins of Griselda but just on an elevated level. Pray For Haiti is curated in the fashion of Westside Gunn’s Pray For Paris as the production is much more polished and the cover art slightly alters a painting by a famous artist (Basquiat). While it isn’t widely accessible, Mach-Hommy’s catalog is very extensive and there is a lot of quality in there but this is easily his best work. He doesn’t venture far from his sound but he doesn’t have to as this project feels more carefully constructed than his others and the production is insane, not to mention Mach’s rapping is the highlight of the album. He starts out the album barring with lines like “put this 38 in ya mouth, go ‘head and spit your magnum opus” and stays barring for the entire 39-minute album. One of my favorite lines in particular is when he says “I make Meghan Markle hop out and get the dutches (dutchess).” Mach has a very unique voice and rapping style but his singing voice is also really good. It’s not like he has a ton of range but when he sings he sounds very good and it suits the production. The song Kriminel is an instant favorite not only because it’s one of the best beats but his extremely low-voiced singing on the hook combined with the background vocals from a woman with a higher voice sounds amazing. Definitely an album highlight. I also love how the hook is in Creole, a language that Mach always incorporates into his music and this album is no exception. This album perfectly encapsulates how hard Mach reps for Haiti. I also really like how he keeps the features to a minimum and when there are features, it is either Westside Gunn or Tha God Fahim who has been Mach’s rapping partner-in-crime for a number of years. Fahim’s solo work isn’t usually my cup of tea but he always shines when he is on songs with other people as he and Mach sound great together because they rap so differently. The song Magnum Band is a perfect example of that. Pray For Haiti is definitely an album that longtime Griselda fans have been fantasizing about for a really long time and also seems to mark a new beginning for Mach as this is his first Griselda release in many years so I can’t wait to see what Mach does next, especially now that he’s back as a Griselda artist.
