Secret/supressed omega and OT4/5 werewolf/pack fics
NOTE: Because of the nature of the trope, many of these, particularly the secret omega fics, deal with graphic descriptions of non-consensual sex/rape and manipulation, as well as abuse/PTSD/trauma, drug and alcohol use etc. Quite a few in this list involve polyamory too if that's not your thing. Not all are super angsty, but quite a few of them are; see my particular notes in the list below.
So why do I like these fics? Just a few reasons: I think it's the winning against all the odds theme that runs through many of the darker ones, the total relief for everyone when it's all over; the love of the pack touches something in me about acceptance of different ways to love and live; and the gender exploration in the omegaverse is such a clever way to examine stereotypes in our own world.

Oh, that's such a good question. I'm surprised I don't have a rec for that already. But here you go!
Danger I Can’t Hide by CelticSky (E, 227K) This one’s got all the tension and drama you’d expect of a World War II story—life and death high stakes, friends and lovers unexpectedly torn apart, battles and heroism, plus the added stakes of classism and homophobia—then add a slow burn, high risk, scorching love affair spanning years. If you want a story that’s complex and fantastically researched, plus lovers to root for, read it. It’s long. But I couldn’t put it down.
Faking It by TheCellarDoor (M, 46K)This one is so sweet. I loved Harry's internal monologue... his insecurities and thoughts that he'd made Louis uncomfortable because he liked, him made me cry. Louis is so soft and supportive. It’s just a lovely fic.
Our Lives, Non Fiction by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 114K) this is, quite literally, the best fic I’ve read in years. It’s so well written, clever, funny, emotional, and sexy. Its draw you in immediately and you’ll end up falling in love with these characters before you know it. Don’t miss this one.
Pull Me Under by zarah5 (E, 140K) One of the very first fics I read when I came into this fandom…and I’ve read it multiple times since. Zarah’s fics hold up every time. This one has it all, great pacing, ot5 friendship, banter, super sexy smut, etc etc. Plus, Louis being super jealous of Harry’s best friend. Zarah writes really terrific internal monologue and her fics are all so good. I'd definitely check her entire catalogue. Link is to a download.
Things Unsaid by LadyLondonderry / @londonfoginacup (GA, 4K) This is so sweet and cute, I actually laughed out loud a couple of times. Louis’ internal monologue is neurotic and funny and this is such a fun twist on soulmates.
boy with kaleidoscope eyes by docklands / @hershelsue (E, 8K) This was just lovely. There was so much tender sweetness in the way they treated each other and I loved that even though it was just in Louis’ POV, we still got a very clear picture of how Harry felt. Honestly Louis in this fic is just sweetest thing ever. Harry should marry that boy.
don't have to go to the pool by kingsoftheimpossible (E, 12K) I just loved this one. This author captures the overwhelm and insecurity and desperation of a high school crush so well. Plus, the shaving scene is ridiculously sexy.
For Reasons Wretched and Divine by @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 95K) Really well written, angsty, emotional fic. I love this author’s ability to draw you in so deeply (and the smut is excellent).
all my love was down in a frozen ground by navigator (E, 16K) This is an old one that I didn’t have bookmarked for some reason. But it’s a favorite and I love everything this author wrote. This is one of those quiet, soft fics with a bit of angst and a lot of internal monologue and gentle conversations. I don’t know, there’s something so touching about it.
A Slow and Steady Rush by godots (E, 12K) I really enjoyed how this one was almost all internal monologue and how the slow build up led to a sweet and awkward first time for them. Just really nicely written.
My Lights Stay Up, But Your City Sleeps by PearlyDewdrops (E, 108K) Featuring lots of pining, really well done internal monologue from Louis, and excellent smut. It also has some really lovely writing that I felt captured the pain of mental illness/anxiety very well.
Could you love me anyway by @sadaveniren (E, 13K) I particularly like the way this fic handles both kink exploration and Harry’s internal monologue of negative self talk – both felt really well realized and realistic.
to hell with romancing by @bottomlinsons (E, 8K) This is worth reading for Harry’s internal monologue alone. This is just a funny fic that morphs into a sweet and really sexy one. Link is to a download.
Laundry Room by beautlouis (E, 10K) I always love an unusual meet-cute, especially when it’s combined with a quirky internal monologue, banter, and super hot smut. This one has it all.
use somebody by istajmaal (E, 5K) One of the things I love about fics from Nick’s POV is that he’s very much an insider, but he’s also very much outside the bubble of LouisandHarry. But here he’s been invited in. Sort of. I just love everything about how he and Louis bicker, Nick’s internal monologue, the set up. It’s all really well done.

Hey! I'm the nonnie who asked about the Zouis and Lilo fics! :) thank you so much for answering, it'd be so great if you could rec some of the fics you have saved, I'd appreciate that! I actually can't quite remember the name of the Zouis fic I've read recently, it was about Zayn moving back to Louis because he broke up with his boyfriend and needed some comfort from his best friend. There doesn't really happen anything between them romantically, it's just hinting at it. Thanks again!! :)

so it sounds like the one you read is the one that i’ve got at the top of this month’s fic list! wasn’t it amazing?? i loved it so much! @so-why-let-your-voice-be-tamed was the author of it (driving down a one way road (to something better) by we_are_the_same for those who want to look it up, i highly recommend it) and i thoroughly enjoyed it, so i’m glad you did too!

Thank you for the thoughtful answer about your larry fics and I'm sorry you felt anxiety writing it! I appreciate your answer so much, it gave me a new perspective on creating content for problematic ships (which larry is now unfortunately) I think people erase parts of their fandom past to protect their hearts, similar to the way you break up with someone. This person/fandom meant so much to you and you loved it but now it hurts to think about. Thanks for standing up against cts from the start
I can definitely understand that, and I’ve wrestled with it wrt Harry/Louis, too -- and with Harry Potter, because that was such an enormous, formative part of my life, and JKR has turned out to be such a vile piece of shit that it’s impossible to go back to the source material without feeling slimy.
But I think in both cases, I agree with what Heidi said in her episode of IMYOLJ about trying to reconcile loving Harry Potter fandom with hating JK Rowling and what she imbued canon with in terms of like, overt-veiled bigotry... what I loved, and love, most about Harry/Louis was never really Harry and Louis and One Direction, it was the fandom around them and the friends that I made and the creativity they inspired and the joy that kind of fannish excitement gave me. And I don’t feel gross about that, and I don’t regret that.
Same with Harry Potter; what I love, really, is how much my young self loved and learned and was inspired by Harry Potter, not the actual text of the books themselves. What’s mattered is the way that Harry Potter changed the MG/YA world and the world of fandom, and those have nothing to do, really, with JKR or her actual works. They’re about other people, whom I don’t feel gross about.
Harry/Louis was so much fun for me not because of anything that Harry or Louis or 1D did, but because of the days that @witchietozier and I stayed up all night writing fake versions of them, or the explosion of excited, joyful posts on my dash the morning that LWWY leaked early, or how igrab flew halfway across the country to spend the night at my apartment so we could see 1D’s first-ever US tour and then dipped out to get burgers before the actual headline act hit the stage because 1D were just the opener (lol), or @kingsoftheimpossible‘s Weird Cat Louis, or getting to meet Catie and Emma and @nichestars and so many other people in person and have coffee or whatever and talk about fanfiction in real life for once.
I loved Harry/Louis so much because sure, those pictures of them meeting Baby Lux for the first time may have been what inspired MYEYNL, but Millie was an OC that I spent a year writing and creating and actually finished a massive-length fic about, and I am always going to be proud of the massive-length stuff that I actually finish instead of getting in my head too much and forcing myself to just abandon. I love Millie. I love the fake versions of Harry and Louis that I created in MYEYNL, and I love the fake Harry and Louis that Lucy and I created in Sheylinson, and I love the fake versions of Harry and Louis that Lucy and I created in Landslide, and I love the fake versions of Harry and Louis that Hannah and I (but mostly Hannah) created in Anyplace Anyhow Anytime. I have always loved the fake versions of them that I was creating, by myself or with friends, infinitely more than the real versions.
That’s what fandom IS, to me. You see a thing and you love it, sure, but you love your own version of it infinitely more. And that’s worth trying to keep in a fond place in your heart, for me. And it’s something that I feel like, for me, is worth fighting against shitty people so that they can still exist, and hold back the tide against what the shitty people have created taking over entirely.
Harry Potter Fandom is the breakwall that stops JKR in her tracks because the versions of Harry and Ginny and Hermione and Ron and the Marauders, all of whom would fucking embrace trans people and mostly fucking ARE people of color, have a bigger and stronger and more meaningful place in the world to more people, at this point, than JKR’s dinky versions.
The Harry and Louis that starred in the fics that I loved -- and there was SO MUCH GOOD H/L FIC back in the day, holy shit -- are NOT the Harry and Louis that Larries believe in, and they’re also not the real Harry and Louis, who are just, like, dudes in their twenties who are whatever. And the more versions of Harry and Louis there are in this world that AREN’T the Larries’ version, the less ground the Larries’ versions can claim for their own.
But I totally understand looking at the carnage of the ideological battlefield and just being like, “My heart is too broken for this.” I get that, 100%.
