Merlin S4E4, "Aithusa"
So someone is stealing something. Great. I'm sure no trouble will come of it.
Ohhh c'est un triskell qu'il fait! On en avait vu un avec Freya, c'est le symbole des Druides!
He better not have slaughtered the Druids.
So Gaius knows him and doesn't like him.
BAHAHA COLIN'S HAIR STICKING UP
They're calling it a triskelion not a triskell?
What/who's Ashkanar?
(I love that shot with the light on Merlin's eye.)
Every single time I've seen him so far I keep thinking I know this actor from someone else.
Half the time when someone says they've changed, they're lying - or not telling the whole truth.
(Sleep shirt Merlin!)
Merlin what the fuck Gaius does not deserve that!
MERLIN DON'T YOU DARE GO WITHOUT TELLING GAIUS. Oh it's only to go see Kilgharrah… well, "only"…
We're getting constant reminders of S2E13 huh
(Oh that's a beautiful shot of Pierrefonds/Camelot.)
Merlin you are SO stupid
Yeah I'm not impressed either
Of all the things! I feel sorry for Agravaine, needing to see that.
See I trust Gaius. And if Gaius says not to trust the guy I vote don't trust him.
(Is this treason for Merlin to do this?)
Kudos to the guy, he doesn't try to take anything else.
And to no one's surprise, Borden is an arsehole!
Merlin is completely batty. (Only slightly concerned, Arthur?)
For once Agravaine isn't the baddie.
Oh great, Arthur considers dragons monsters.
SHOUT LOUDER, GAIUS. I'M SURE THEY HAVEN'T HEARD YOU IN EALDOR.
So Merlin is the servant to all the knights apparently. Just great.
Has Merlin even eaten?
It's just not even fun at this point.
The waterfall is hell on my earphones.
Merlin is a good cook is canon apparently!
What is going on??
So Bad Guy is in the cave. Somehow I could've guessed there were wards…
The smile :)
Merlin you're not going to hatch it are you? How would you take care of a dragon?
Merlin will protect that dragon egg with his life I feel it.
Merlin you do realise you're a shit liar? The only reason you keep your secret is that nobody ever asks!
Oh he's giving the egg to Kilgharrah?
OH MY GOD SO CUTE!!!
BABY DRAGON CUTENESS OVERLOAD

The last thing Gwaine feels is a pressure on his forehead, a breath caressing his face and a sob that cuts through the haze of darkness (but not enough. Mere strength is not enough to pull him from the clutches of death and failure and--)
He falls.
He stays there, suspended in a chasm that swallows him as he remembers the unending darkness that Lancelot had walked through. Yes, there is where he will go, the cacophony of sound and nothingness which had chilled his bones into terror and rage. There is no heaven waiting for him; not for the knight who had failed his king, not for the friend who had failed his friend.
And yet.
And yet he can hear it - a soft voice whispering, “Gwaine,” (he realises with a sudden clarity that should have been apparent to him long before this, that there is one more person he failed), and the metallic sound of a body covered in chainmail being settled onto the ground.
He opens his eyes (when had he closed it? He doesn’t know, though he supposes that there are a lot of things one can’t know about what happens after death) and sees Percival covering something with his cloak.
His body. Of course it is.
.
Gwaine is there when his king dies.
He buries it deep within his chest (or whatever is left of it), brands the memory into his being - for what is a spirit, if not a lingering memory unable to let go of the world that created it? - because this, he thinks, is hell; the amalgamation of his failures: Arthur dead and cold in Merlin’s arms as he screams to the heavens (and Percival, abandoned and left behind).
But they’re not simple screams, even with the grief and desperation that reverberates through it. There are words, there. Words that Gwaine doesn’t understand (But he knows. He thinks he knows what they could imply, has suspected for a long time)
Gwaine is there when the dragon comes down from the sky. He is there when Merlin says, broken, “I failed?” (No, you’ve never failed him. It’s me. I failed him. I failed you. I failed--). He is there when Kilgharrah promises Arthur’s return, and when Merlin’s eyes flashes gold as he sends Arthur’s funeral boat drifting into the lake.
He stands there with Merlin, watching the boat disappear into the fog.
He stays with until Percival comes and they hold each other in combined grief. (Gwaine does not deserve their tears. He never has.). And there too when Gwen and Merlin hold each other as Merlin recounts Arthur’s death.
He is there when Leon’s voice breaks as he announces the death of his king; next to Merlin, watching from the balcony of the great hall in silence.
He stays in Camelot through the lifting on the ban of magic, through Merlin refusing to be made court sorcerer, through Gwen’s reign of Camelot’s most prosperous time, through her marriage with Leon, through Gaius’ death, through wars with the Saxons, through Percival’s last breath as he falls upon an enemy’s sword.
And he leaves. He leaves when Merlin leaves.
He lingers, making Avalon his home as Merlin makes Avalon his.
(Because home is not a place, Gwaine thinks. And he never once questioned where Merlin’s place is.
He’s never questioned his either.)
.
Years pass. The world changes. And still he is by Merlin’s side in the water-filled gateway between life and death, until that water is no more, until the tower in its centre crumbles as did the citadels of Camelot. Until Merlin, too, is far from the man he met at a tavern a millennia ago.
Then one day, like a sudden rumble of thunder in a quiet storm, he hears a voice.
He looks to Merlin, hunched over his armchair pouring over books on magic he had begun collecting since the waters of Avalon had receded. He does not notice.
Gwaine follows the call to the tower, feeling a tingle in his body (is it a body? He still doesn’t know after all this time) every step he takes. The center of the Sidhe’s power, he remembers reading on an open page of Merlin’s books, the powers over life and death. When he enters the tower, he half expects to see farie-like creatures flying towards him.
“Hello,” he says, instead finding a woman standing at the centre of the ruins, the dark black robes she wore an anachronism to the hundreds of years that have passed. “To which lady do I owe this pleasure?”
She blinks, slightly fazed, before taking on an amused expression. “You’re exactly as they say, Sir Gwaine.”
They?
“Freya.” She holds out her hand. “And you are the Strength that will save Courage and Magic.”

Since October is my yearly Fullmetal Alchemist Rewatch MonthTM, it's time to rehash the ol' BBCM AU
Arthur as Colonel Roy Mustang. Naturally my gut instinct is to put Arthur as Edward. They're both angry blondes with a red cape-thingie and twice their weight in daddy issues. But honestly, if we look at this from a perspective of themes and character arcs, I honestly think Arthur would be a better fit for the role of Roy Mustang. Both of them are members of an oppressive military structure, have a history with participating in genocide that haunts them and requires redemption, and are in a position of authority over a found family group of soldiers (drawing parallels between the Round Table and Team Mustang). Also, Mustang stages a coup to overthrow the evil/oppressive government, and it would have been *chefs kiss* good character development to see Arthur do that
Merlin as Edward Elric. Y'know I didn't think Merlin as Edward would make any amount of sense. In terms of personality they couldn't be more different. But the more I think about, the more I realize that while they are very different people, thematically there's a lot of similarity. First and foremost, themes of sacrifice. Merlin puts himself through so much crap just to protect his friends, while Ed lost his leg trying to bring his mom back, and gave up his arm and later his alchemy in order to save his brother. Also, they're both young magical prodigies and considered anomalies within their respective magic systems - Merlin because he was born with his powers, and Ed because he can use alchemy without a transmutation circle. Also also, they're both being used as weapons in service of an oppressive authority - Ed is a State Alchemist, aka a "dog of the military" and one of Father's chosen sacrifices; and Merlin is both a servant to the Pendragons and destiny's chosen protector of the Once and Future King. Both have to struggle with balancing duty/obligation with their own morals and desires, and both characters inevitably fall on opposite sides of that fence. (I also put Merlin as Ed because I'm a slut for whump and I would love nothing more than to see Merlin endure all the angsty crap Ed goes through)
Percival as Alphonse. At first it might seem like Percival would be Major Armstrong since they're both muscle-y boys. But actually, Percival is Alphonse. They're both large and imposing guys who are secretly total softies and don't have nearly the amount of screentime they deserve. Also, if Percy's soul had been bound to a hollow suit of armor like Al, he would definitely start hiding cats in there and you cannot change my mind
Freya as Nina Tucker. Don't hate me for this one, but it makes sense right? Like, like, forget the romantic shippy stuff for a sec, that's just gross in this context. Freya as Nina is so accurate it hurts. RIGHT????
Kilgharrah as The Truth. They're both morally ambiguous, physically displaced entities who are often visited or called upon during magical/alchemical events, who dispense wisdom and judgment based on their own strict adherence to a certain code - Kilgharrah to destiny, and The Truth to equivalent exchange
Uther as Father. Daddy issues
Balinor as Van Hohenheim. This one's a bit of a no-brainer. Balinor and Hohenheim are both absent fathers who have a brief reunion with their son/s and then die shortly thereafter. Also, parallels between them both having ~special magic~ that make them a target (Balinor's a dragonlord and...whatever the hell Hohenheim has going on). Also, both of them became lonely wanderers after suffering mass death within their community - the Purge and the fall of Xerxes respectively
Hunith as Trisha Elric. Ooh this one hurts but it just fits so well
Gwaine as Ling Yao OR Jean Havoc. Comic relief foodies and fun-loving characters who are secretly royalty but don't even remotely act like it? Wanderers from a distant land, coming to Camelot/Amestris with seemingly the sole purpose of messing with everyone? Yeah he's definitely Ling. But I'm also willing to accept the idea of Gwaine as Havoc, what with them both being the chaotic bastard subordinates to Arthur and Mustang respectively. Not to mention parallels between Gwaine being tortured and/or killed, and Havoc being hospitalized and paralyzed - both of these tragedies occuring after a fateful run-in with a murderous black-haired sadist
Mithian as Lan Fan. Can't explain this one, it just feels right
Gaius as Pinako. I don't think I have to justify this choice even a little bit
Nimueh as Scar. Yeah you heard me. Thematically it makes a world of sense. Both are members of a group of people that were subjugated, oppressed, and overall victims of genocide that became extremists in their quest for wholly-earned revenge. Also because Scar got an interesting redemption arc and I want Nimueh to have what he had
Lancelot as Maes Hughes. OOOOHH THIS ONE HURTS TO THINK ABOUT. But uhh. It makes sense. Both of them figured out the big secret before everyone else - Lancelot found out about Merlin's magic, and Hughes found out about what Father was planning. Not to mention that both of them are loveable characters whose deaths will be forever burned into my psyche. Also, if Lancelot had a wife and child you can bet your ass he would show off pictures of them to anyone and everyone
Elyan as Maria Ross. Mostly I made this choice because both of them were on the run at one point for crimes they didn't necessarily commit, Maria for accusations of murder and Elyan for all the stuff he did while being possessed by a ghost. Also because the idea of a shapeshifter using Elyan's face to murder Lancelot hurts in all the angstiest ways. At first it was tricky thinking of a place to put Elyan and then it HIT me and now I can't stop thinking about it
Gwen as Winry Rockbell. Hello, Winry's a mechanic and Gwen's a blacksmith? And then there's the dead family trauma, and them both being caring and compassionate but also won't take anyone's crap. And if Nimueh is Scar in this universe, then it makes a bit more sense from that angle too. Y'know, since Nimueh poisoned Gwen's father and indirectly led to her almost getting executed, while Scar straight-up killed Winry's parents. Just thinking about the scene where Ed gently pulls the gun from Winry's hands, telling her she shouldn't kill Scar because she has the hands of a healer not a fighter...but with Merlin and Gwen instead....oh my GOD I am going to EXPLODE with FEELINGS
Isolde as Izumi Curtis and Tristan as Sig. Fighter-type power couples who could wipe the floor with you while also held within each other's passionate and tender embrace? Sign me up
Agravaine as Cornello. Both of them are horrible people. Enough said
Leon as Riza Hawkeye. A weaker man might place Merlin or even Gwen as Hawkeye. But I have the balls to admit that if anyone fits the role of Arthur's badass yet stern ride-or-die second in command, it's Leon. If you can't see that because you're too busy trying to think of this from a shipping perspective, then I really can't help you. Leon is so obviously Hawkeye it hurts
Morgana as Olivier Armstrong. They're both BAMF girlbosses. A lot of people would classify Morgana as Lust instead, but that's low-hanging fruit. Uwu Morgana and Lust are both dark-haired, black-clad evil beauties who kill people and cause mayhem. Get real. As if Morgana would willingly follow the orders of someone who calls themselves 'Father'. C'mon guys, Olivier is just Morgana but blonde and not evil. They even have a similar relationship with their siblings, for crying out loud (although the concept of Arthur as Major Armstrong is absolutely terrifying and that mental image will haunt me for years to come)

Bbcm?💜
The first character I fell in love with: Gwen. I adored her, she was so sweet and cheery and she deserves the world
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Leon. He's just a guy, a dude who is very resistant to fire and sword damage and there was no reason for why I latched onto him so hard, but I knew he was a knight and I was very desperate for knight content and now here we are lmao
The character everyone loves that I don't: Well I don't know about EVERYONE loving him, but I really don't like Kilgharrah and I know some people DO like him. Can't stand him.
The character I love that everyone else hates: I was going to put Mordred but I think the better answer here is Gaius, because I'm pretty sure I've seen more animosity towards Gaius than I have for Mordred. I love them both, I know they have both done shit things, but I don't blame Mordred as he was a child and Gaius... Listen I really love found family father son relationships
The character I used to love but don't any longer: Morgana. I knew she would become an antagonist when I started the show but that didn't stop me from growing to love her. But I also came to hate her though over the course of s3.
The character I would totally smooch hug: I have taken the liberty of changing this to hug because I'm ace as hell and don't want to smooch any of them. Hug on the other hand? I want to hug most of the characters. I would definitely hug Percival, he looks like he would give SUCH good hugs. I would also give Gwen and Merlin hugs because I think they need them the most, and I want to hug Leon because he's my favorite.
The character I'd want to be like: Leon because he survives the show and is immune to fire and sword damage. He also is really good with a sword and I want to be good with a sword
The character I'd slap: Slap is not a strong enough word, but Uther.
A pairing that I love: Perelyaine <3
A pairing that I despise: I really don't want to speak of cursed pairings, but ever sense I found out that Uther/ Gaius is a pairing that exists, I've wanted to die every time I remember about it.

“if i cant use magic, i might as well die” ....well, ive got a surprise for you-
“maybe theres someone with more magic than me?” like... a whole dragon? i mean if you say so 👀
merlin about why he was born like this: if you cant tell me, no one can!
a fucking dragon, basically every magical creature and the druids: WELL-
the camelot guards are so stupid how the hell is this kingdom still standing
how does kilgharrah know merlins name? in prophecy hes known as emrys (and we see basically every magical being call him emrys and not merlin,, i think). so how does he know? did he stretch his neck long enough that he could somehow hear merlin? is it cuz theyre kin? is it cuz merlin and gaius were yelling so loudly that kilgharrah could hear them all the way in his cave? ig we’ll never know 🖐
merlin: where are you?!
kilgharrah:
kilgharrah: without you, arthur will never succeed.
merlin: ....oh look, im already paranoid
the amount of sadness i feel hearing kilgharrah say “none of us can choose our destiny, merlin. and none of us can escape it” is INSANE cuz in season one you can SEE merlin trying to escape it. hes doing his damned best trying to have some control over his life. and then in later seasons you can see the light slowly drain from his eyes as he becomes just another toy for the gods to be entertained by. he realises he cant control a single thing about his life so he does the one thing he can: protect arthur. and he loses SO MUCH because of it! its not fair, he deserved so much, and when he finally got everything he could ever ask for, it was taken away from him by his own mistakes.
arthur, seeing morgana in a beautiful dress: god have mercy 😍
uther: .....um
the way they set arthur and morgana up as if they arent gonna make them siblings i- what the fawk 😄
person A, who knows arthurian lore: oh no! arthur is going to have an affair with morgan(a) and have mordred! oh no!!
person B, whos seen merlin: oh no in this show its worse
person B, knowing full well theyre siblings: much worse....
gwen: who’d wanna marry arthur? 🙄
-
gwen, getting crowned queen of camelot: well fuck
hhhnghnh yes queen sing them to sleep yes murder his bitchass (and fail but like its the thought that counts)
on a sidenote tho this is such a fun way to murder someone, id try this
the absolutely OFFENDED “FATHER!” and the horrified look in arthurs eyss when uther announced merlin would be his manservant is PRICELESS OMG
oh the way uther unintentionally plants the first seed of his sons love story omg 😍😍
Conclusion: this episode is a 10/10 greatest episode with so many iconic scenes omg. mary collins u will forever have my heart for unintentionally kickstarting merlin and arthurs relationship destiny. i loved the whole thing and oh GOD does it already hurt knowing full well how the show ends

let's talk about s02e08: the sins of the father.
let's talk about how this could've been a pivotal point in arthur's character arc, if the writers of this show weren't fucking cowards.
let's talk about how it was completely unfair on merlin's part to lie to arthur, because arthur deserved the truth goddamnit and it wasn't merlin's place to take that away from him.
of course, this is later justified by merlin saying that he knows arthur and that he wouldn't be able to live with himself or the guilt of it if he had gone ahead and killed his father. and of course, like every other potentially life-changing event, all of this is never mentioned by the show again.
magic is damned even further in arthur's eyes, uth*r threatens everyone who knows the truth into silence, vaguely implies that he's totally chill with his son fucking his manservant as long as they're all of the same anti-magic ideals, the episode ends in all smiles.
but whew! at least arthur's been protected from the harsher sides of reality, once again! god forbid this character gains any sense of self-awareness!
my point is, if all of this was to keep arthur from killing daddykins bc it would weigh on his delicate conscience, to preserve the Goodness Of His Character As A Man And King, why the fuck should merlin have to lie to him about it?
consider, instead of:
Morgause is lying! She's an enchantress. She tricked you. That was not your mother you saw. That was an illusion. Everything...everything your mother said to you...those were Morgause's words.
we could have had something along the lines of:
What your father did was wrong, Arthur, but is this man the man you want to be? The king you want to be? Would you be able to ascend the throne even as your father's blood glistens, still fresh, on your sword? Would you be able to live with yourself if you made this decision?
if he kills his darling father anyway, honestly, Good For Him. he has every right to. uth*r went through with a dangerous spell despite knowing the risks, then commited genocide in its name whilst lying about his reason as to why.
uth*r has commited genocide.
he is not a good king or father either, as proven several times throughout the show. he deserves no mercy, no pity.
but the choice should've been arthur's to make. this scene should've been a testament to arthur's character.
if he kills daddy dearest anyways but then feels Super Guilty about it later, we know he wouldn't have made a good king. you can't head a country when you're prone to making drastic decisions without thinking them through bc you were throwing pissy fit at the time.
so if he still goes through with it, he must not been shown to regret it.
but say he does let uth*r live. maybe for whatever love remains for the man who raised him. but he renounces him as his king, as his father.
arthur starts publicly going against his policies and decisions. bc if uth*r could have been so wrong about this alone, what else is he wrong about? arthur refuses to carry out his orders if he believes it’s against the interests of the people.
raising taxes? how about No. oh, he can’t knight commoners? just Try and stop him. he learns to trust in the counsel of merlin, gwen, morgana, people who we know interact direct directly with the citizens of camelot and want what’s best for them; builds his own circle. he routinely breaks out prisoners from the dungeons he believe have been punished unjustly.
especially the people who use magic. he openly speaks out against his father and his persecution of it.
uth*r can try and stop him, alright. but there is a clear rift in the kingdom now, two distinct factions. those who believe in the king that arthur will be, and those who believe their loyalty is still to the current monarch.
and look at these people, from the execution scene from s01e01:
Tumblr media
look at their faces (and also hnfvbdjh colin morgan and his obscene fucking cheekbones jesus christ). they don't seem to appreciate uth*r saving them from the evils of magic much. how many of them have lost their friends and family to his crusade? how many of them remember a time when magic was still allowed in camelot and the kingdom flourished?
these people will stand with arthur pendragon.
yeah. the ones who still believe in uth*r’s authority are few and far in between. and they know where they can shove it.
arthur learns. about magic, about its history, the old religion. merlin finally reveals his magic to him, so does morgana. he goes to the druids and he falls to his knees and he begs for their forgiveness. morgause begrudgingly allies herself with him, seeing his determination to right his father’s mistakes. he still struggles with the little boy within him who just wants his only parent’s approval, sometimes. but he is slowly but surely becoming his own man.
arthur becomes king long before he takes the throne. uth*r is forced to watch, a meaningless figurehead, as everything he worked to achieve comes undone at the hands of his own son. no attempts to make the viewers sympathise with him. he is angry and miserable and wasting away and there is nothing he can do about it; and it’s exactly what he fucking deserves.
and merlin? merlin finally realises kilgharrah’s word isn’t gospel. morgana is redeemed before she ever loses herself. but they must learn to trust each other again, bc merlin left her to face her fear and self-loathing alone when she needed someone more than ever (you might be cute, merlin, but not enough to get away with THAT). he finds himself taking young sorcerers who don’t know how to control their power under his wing (gilli, daegal, oh god the endless opportunities here), including mordred. MORGAUSE TEACHING MERLIN AND MORGANA MAGIC.
he and arthur are equals now, partners in destiny; the world is theirs.
and for the love of god, give me villains whose entire personality and motivations don’t boil down to I Hate Uth*r Pendragon And Also His Son.
give me kings who are afraid of camelot’s growing power, give me bandits and slave traders who realise they have no place in arthur and merlin’s albion. give me uth*r apologists scrambling to maintain their position in court, hell, give me anarchist organisations if that’s what it takes to spice things up a little.
give me the golden age of albion we were promised.
of course, all of this requires characters acknowledging and growing from their mistakes, and making their actions have lasting consequences — so i suppose it really is a bit too much to ask of the writers.

When Albions need is greatest, King Arthur shall rise again...
Imagine Merlin laying awake for hours upon hours, losing sleep because he wishes he could know what Albion's greatest need could be. He wishes he could know when Arthur will rise again, and he hopes more than anything that he will still be alive when he returns.
Imagine him promising that he will make sure Arthur knows what's happening in Camelot. He goes down to the lake at least every month, if not much more often. He tells Arthur when Guinevere remarries, when she has children, when she passes away. He cries for his friends when he loses them, as he tells Arthur all that they've done since he left.
Imagine Merlin pleading with him at the edge of the lake, hoping to see him one last time before his own death.
Imagine him realising that he is now over 100 years old, and the years don't age him like they did once. He starts to realise that death doesn't threaten him like it does others. He promises Arthur that however long it may take, he will wait for him.
Imagine him going to the lake as fast as he can manage when the Five Kingdoms begin to fall and fracture. No empire can hold forever, and this, this must be Albions greatest need. The land needs a great king, a good man, to lead them away from their own destruction. And as much as he is afraid for the fate of his land, he cannot help but be glad that the wait is over.
But Arthur does not come.
Imagine Albion falling into pieces, invaded and overtaken by Saxons and Vikings alike. The wars over the throne seem to continue for generations, and this must be Albion's greatest need, but Arthur does not come.
Imagine Merlin watching as the Normans take the land, ending the Dark Ages for good, crushing the last few remnants of all that Arthur knew. He is certain now that this must be the end of Albion, this must be the greatest need. Castles are stamped on ancient lands, people are driven from their homes, and blood is shed of innocent people with no defence. The land is starved.
Still, Arthur does not come.
Imagine Merlin watching the Medieval times unfold, and waiting still for Arthur to return. Albion is dead, kept alive only in stories, and Merlin tells them often, to children and adults alike, but the children love them best. It's all he can do to protect it now.
Imagine him seeing wars and bloodshed, and the falling of great dynasties and Kings.
Imagine him watching the beginning of the burning times in England, as a hatred of magic rises again. He tries to protect as many as he can, he tries to hide those accused from their death sentences. He knows that almost all who stand trial are innocent, that magic has never been theirs, and he knows too, that magic is no crime. His power is as strong as it has ever been, but he has almost no reason to use it without a Camelot to protect. In fact, he hasn't used magic much in years, but he uses it now, to defend the children, to keep as many as he can from torture. He fails far too many times.
This, he thinks, must be Arthur's call. He will return to defend the very last of the old ways, the last of the magical worlds. He will save the innocent and the sorcerers alike, undoing all his fathers past evils, and he will reign once again over an Albion which is just and fair. He is certain.
Arthur does not come.
Imagine Merlin seeing that, finally, these Kings and Queens achieve what Uther never could. Magic is destroyed, feared. Sorcery had almost been allowed to survive, but now, it will never have that chance again.
Imagine Merlin crying for all that has been lost. Imagine him cursing at Arthur for abandoning them all.
Imagine him watching the rise of the scientific world, with all the new knowledge that comes with it. He has waited so long for his King to return, to bring back the old world, but now he's losing faith. So he tries to become a part of the world as it is now, he learns what the doctors of this time are learning, and he tries to learn too. In time, with magic and science both his, he becomes a great healer. He isn't sure what that's worth anymore.
Imagine him sitting in libraries, rewriting the ancient stories of his King and his friends on scraps of paper, because someone needs to keep them alive. He doesn't tell them himself much anymore, because after years of watching others pass on without him, he fears friendship. He has seen tragedy after tragedy that he could not stop, he has seen death upon death, and it sometimes feels as though the bloodshed will never end.
Imagine him hiding himself away in a society that is making it harder and harder to do so. He is a doctor for as long as he can be, for as long as people don't ask questions, but in time he has to give that up too. Instead, he finds work in libraries and museums, telling the tales of those he has seen rise and fall. At first, he teaches mostly about the dark ages, but soon he starts to specialise in the stories of those burned much later, of the witches he saw die under the reign of far more recent kings and queens, and the innocent people accused too. As much as Albion's, their story deserves to be told. Merlin still feels ashamed that there were so many he could not protect.
Imagine Merlin reluctantly accepting a newer world, yet still hating the evils that come with it.
Imagine him sitting in a bunker as bombs rain down upon him, as civilians are killed without thought and families are torn apart. It feels as though it must be the end of the world when he stands outside again, smelling the smoke thick in the air, and seeing the glow of fire all around him. Buildings have been reduced to rubble and ash. Albion seems as though all of the land is alight. This is the reality of war now.
Imagine Merlin sitting at the lake and begging Arthur to return, but knowing now that he won't.
Imagine him knowing that all he can do is protect as many as he can. It will never be enough. Magic cannot stop the evil that lies in the hearts of men. By the time 1945 comes, he is sure that Kilgharrah must have lied. If Arthur ever could come back, he would have done so. He would have done what he could, even if was no longer much. He no longer believes his King will return.
He still goes to the lake every month.
Arthur is never there.
Imagine him seeing the dawn of a new millennium, as the number 2000 seems to appear everywhere. He thinks of how much has changed, and it pains an already shattered soul. Too much is different, and immortality is a burden far more than a gift. He has never wished more that he could join Arthur, instead of being stuck waiting for someone who never comes, but he has no choice. He is destined and doomed to stay here, forever, if that's how long it takes.
Imagine him heading down to the lake one morning to tell Arthur of all that's changed since he last came. It isn't much, and it's nothing Arthur would be able to understand anyway, but he made a promise. He hasn't broken it in well over a thousand years.
Imagine him stopping when he sees a man sat at the edge of the lake, a chainmail shirt still on his shoulders.
Imagine Merlin just bursting into tears because its been so long, and in all this time it's never stopped hurting.
Imagine Arthur getting up, and seeing him, and smiling, and for a moment it feels like nothing has changed as he pulls Merlin into a hug.
Imagine Merlin hitting on the arm and calling him a cabbage head because, "Arthur, where the hell have you been...?"

Have you ever watched the merlin movies? because I was obsessed with them but for some reason I can't get into the series, even though I was super excited about it. It's been like 10 years now haha
Hey anon!
I'm not sure which movies you are talking about. So from the top of my head, I've watched :
- the Merlin series from quite a while ago (ok, just googled it, it's from 1998), and it's good. I come back to it every once in a while, although I don't know if it's objectively good or just nostalgia playing.
-Prince Valiant (I liked it, it was an easy watch but left no imprint on me really)
-King Arthur (the 2004 film). Good watch, but I might be biased because of Keira Knightley, Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen.
-The sword in the Stone, absolutely love it, it was my childhood comfort movie, I dont take criticism.
-Excalibur, kinda a guilty pleasure cause I cant say it is a good movie but I like it. Not my ultimate favourite though.
-Monthy Python, great. 10/10. Again, I dont take criticism.
-Camelot, never saw it sober but my drunken self loves it.
-King Arthur and the Legend of the sword or whatever. Saw it twice. Forgot it twice. Dont know why, it doesn't appeal to me. I keep forgetting this exist until I have to heavily think about it.
-Kaamelott (French tv serie), 11/10. Know every words, been waiting 10 years for the movie, which is finally coming out this year and it's gonna be a trilogy, and it has Sting in it, because why the hell not. Best adaption of the legends in my opinion, the humour is spot on, the music is incredible, and the finale is the most impactful piece of media I have ever watched in my life.
-Cursed, dont have a full opinion on it as I never came around to finish it. And probably won't.
Sorry, I got distracted there. 😂
And then, of course, Merlin! Do I think it's the best TV show ever? No. (Fun fact, my favourite TV serie is Blackpool, a 6 episodes musical crime/drama serie with David Morrisey, Sarah Parish and David Tennant and ... the whole British actors catalog. It's amazing, the plot is amazing, the musics are amazing, the acting, the plot twists, the finale....*deep breath* it's a must-watch!)
To come back to Merlin, I know a lot of people who never got into it and stopped watching it. I think either you hear the first Merlin/Arthur dialogue and you're hooked for life, either you got a meh reaction and can quickly abandoned the serie. I personally think it deserves a chance, and that it should be watched as a whole. It grows on you I think. You genuinely get attached to the main characters and some episodes are pure silliness whilst other could make you cry. And as most British TV series of the time, yes, it looks cheap. The CGI is almost laughable but it has the passion. You can see all the actors are there because they want to, to me, it makes a massive difference. Anthony Head is a great Uther and I could not see anyone else feeling this role anymore. John hurt as the voice of Kilgharrah is the best choice they could have come up with: it has the cheek, the mystery, the sass and the ageless feeling to it. Great fantasy voice. Richard Wilson as Gaius is an other great choice in my opinion. Always loved him (also feels like he was always old and been here forever bless him). And on top of all these great actors, you get a young Colin Morgan and Bradley James, and it works. It almost feels like these great actors who have nothing to prove anymore are giving the spotlight to these new talents and I love it. Angel Coulby as Gwen is... incredible. One look at her, and you know she would be a great queen. Katie McGrath as Morgana is a clever choice as well. It works! And the knights and... yeah. I do like it. In fact I love it. And it's been... 12 years?! And I still love it. Why? Idk. Nostalgia? Comfort TV serie? Me trying not to let go of my childhood? Because it's actually factually good? Idk.
And you know, we all got different taste! I personally never got into Game of Thrones, and I still don't understand the hype, and it's fine..!

merlin has got some elements of class awareness- you've got will, the commoner knights, guinevere, the portrayal of uther. and, sure! when you're working with king arthur myth specifically and medieval fantasy in general, kings and monarchies as heroic entities are kind of ubiquitous. they're magically appointed, etc. but the idea of merlin as "born to serve" arthur makes me sick, on more than a level specific to them as characters. born to work with arthur to bring about the golden age, sure. 1
Tumblr media
YES.  there is no reciprocity here.  the idea is that eventually they are supposed to be partners in this work.  equals.  but the show never reaches that point.
the line i was born to serve you does such a disservice to who merlin is, and who he could have been.  i wrote about it more in this post, but like - merlin could have been anyone he wanted to be.  he could have done anything.  he is so talented at so many things and so naturally gifted at interacting with people and so curious and enthusiastic and clever, all on his own - he could have done anything with his life.  but he puts all of the possibilities and potentials for his own life on hold, because he believes he has to do so; he has to prop arthur up so that arthur can (supposedly) free merlin’s people and build a better world.
merlin chooses to do this, because he has dragons and mentor figures and literal gods telling that it’s necessary.  but he wasn’t born for that.  he wasn’t born to serve anybody.  he was just born, period, and he exists, period, and his life has value by virtue of that fact alone.
i know lines like “i was born to serve you” are popular, in some circles.  i know.  i understand that taking them as...starry-eyed romanticism is probably a more common read, and that’s fine.  if people have fun engaging with it like that, they should keep right on doing it.  that’s what fandom’s for.  but for me personally, lines like that leave the ugliest taste in my mouth.  they are the tragic fallout of merlin’s five-season slide into self-abnegation.
lines like that aren’t RIGHT.  and they definitely aren’t RECIPROCAL.  arthur never says anything equivalent to ‘i was born to serve you’ when it comes to merlin’s place in arthur’s life.  arthur’s life is never framed as existing for merlin’s sake alone.  never.  whereas merlin is told from the get-go that his purpose in life is arthur.  just arthur.
‘i use it for you.  only for you.’  thanks, i HATE IT!  i know wider portions of the fandom probably love it, and it’s fine to love it; we all experience things differently.  but i despise it.  i loathe it.  i would shoot it into the sun if i could.
because first of all - LIES!  merlin does not and has never used magic ‘just for arthur.’  never.  i know i say this all the time but - merlin’s life does not revolve around arthur pendragon.  merlin uses magic for his own purposes, his own missions, for things he personally thinks are important.  he protects ealdor, hides freya, helps lancelot, retrieves the dragon egg, releases kilgharrah, saves his mother, heals gwen’s father, rescues mordred.  he does his chores with magic so he can sit around and read books.  he cleans stained shirts with magic so he can show off for his friend.  merlin’s magic is not and has never been a gift for arthur alone.  it’s part of who merlin is.
and second of all, again - where’s the reciprocity?!  why the FUCK does merlin have to say something like that?  arthur has never expressed any sentiments like this in merlin’s direction.  never.  he is never told to subsume himself for merlin’s sake, or to use his power for merlin’s (’and only merlin’s!’) benefit.
this piece sums it up a lot better than i ever could, but the ultimate fact of the matter is that merlin and arthur never achieve an equal partnership in canon.  only merlin is ever expected to say lines like i was born to serve you, but the show still tries to feed these lines to us as if merlin and arthur both care about each other the same way, as if arthur has ever demonstrated that same level of devotion, and as if merlin’s personal attachment to arthur isn’t also tied up with insanely complicated beliefs and hopes and fears about arthur’s prophesied role in liberating merlin’s people and bringing peace to the land.
i know fanon likes to envision the two of them as destined partners (whether you want to read that as platonic or romantic or whatever) and in fanon people just love this idea that they’re the most important people in each other’s lives, but in canon that’s just not true.  it’s not true.
so when it comes to i was born to serve you, i personally can’t stand it.  merlin deserves better than that sort of thing, but the show still tries to ram it down my throat as if i’m not going to spit it out and ask “how the hell is this fair?”
tl;dr - my metric for whether something is worthy of merlin's humanity or not is whether i think prince william of ealdor would throw a fucking fit if he heard merlin say it, and if the answer is yes, i know it’s trash.  i was born to serve you and i use it only for you fall squarely into that category.

is there any fics from the last ep of merlin where when kilgharrah says “no man, no matter how great, can know his destiny” merlin just flips the fuck out
Like kilgharrah would say it and merlin would just be like
Merlin: no- NO MAN CAN KNOW HIS DESTINY??? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??!???! oddly enough I remember a million times you SPECIFICALLY state mine or arthurs destiny so what the FUCK do you mean by that huh??? You didn’t consider to mention this early on???!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME RN???? man this is why I should have NEVER listened to a stupid fucking dragon omd ‘no man can know his destiny’ FUCK YOU???
Like hes so overwhelmed and sad about losing his best friend and thinking hes failed his lifes mission just for this THING to say “welp idk couldnt have seen that coming, its silly to think you can know how the future will play out”
Like I knowwww that was his last straw

(but also jk bc merlin deserves to be loved and appreciated, and all of that romantic ‘hold me’ shit is what sustains me)

Merlin 2x11 "The Witch's Quickening" Highlights:
Mordred's hot bandit foster parents
Okay so the guards just let this dude through even though they've definitely never seen him before and he's impersonating their (now-dead) coworker. Camelot Security: never not disappointing
I just really want one of those swishy red capes man
Merlin's Mordred senses tingling
Mordred’s evil little smirk when Alvarr asks if he's ready to go through with their plan
Arthur complimenting Merlin on his display of initiative (before taking it back a few minutes later)
Ah yes, our first introduction to the mind-fucking crystals
Sneaky Morgana in full Slytherin gear while she rummages around Arthur's chambers
Suspicious!Merlin snarkily reminding Morgana that Arthur trains at the same time every day, subtly letting her know that he doesn't believe her
"You know what they say: food takes time to prepare." (Merlin is the fucking mayor of snark town this episode)
Being a citizen of Camelot must be so stressful. A powerful sorcerer escaped from the dungeon? Warning bell. The city is being attacked by a giant mythical beast? Warning bell. Something's been stolen from the vaults which has literally nothing to do with you and you’ll probably be fine? Same fucking warning bell. These poor people probably never know when they're actually in danger.
Arthur lying about how the intruder got the keys from his chambers to protect Merlin from Uther's rage
Kilgharrah and Merlin locked in a snark-off
Morgana snapping at Gwen (who is just trying to do her job properly) is irrefutable proof that she's headed down the path of no return
Mordred literally running to hug Morgana. Like I know there's some potentially evil shit afoot, but it's such a genuinely sweet little moment
"I don't want to be brave – I just want to be myself." (mood)
Morgana's 'Oh Shit' face when Gaius tells Uther about Alvarr
Arthur misinterperating why Morgana doesn't want to go on this trip as her being worried for his safety and Morgana fighting not to roll her eyes
The more evil Morgana becomes, the less lipstick she wears
Arthur being able to tell when Merlin is terrified (even though he doesn't necessarily know why he's actually terrified) and him being concerned about it
Merlin using magic to find the camp without Arthur realising it
Mordred straight up impaling two dudes, smiling creepily, then glaring at Merlin and warning him that he'll never forgive him and he'll never forget
I know that they needed to show time passing and I’d never complain about Alexander Vlahos being in anything, but how badass would it have been if it was baby!Mordred that murdered Arthur
Not that I wanted Arthur murdered
Honestly, I could have done without that part
But if we had to do that part again, that’s how I’d want it do go down
Merlin's semi-magicgasm when Arthur walks past him with the crystal
Merlin fretting about how the renegades knew they were coming and Arthur trying to reassure him
Arthur giving Merlin the crystal to guard instead of one of his knights
(because Arthur trusts Merlin more than anyone pass it on)
Merlin unable to resist using the crystal and it severely fucking with his head
Alvarr choosing to protect Morgana even though he knows he's going to die either way
"Being an enemy of Camelot is no crime."
Uther: *furious at Morgana standing up to him* "YOU WILL GO TO YOUR CHAMBERS!" – Morgana: *with quiet fury* "And you, Uther, you will go to hell." (SHE DID THAT! ♥)
(If Merlin is the mayor of snark town, Morgana is the queen)
Merlin being properly wracked with anxiety about the stuff he saw in the crystal and Gaius trying to gently reassure him like the amazing dad he is
Gwen still being so lovely to Morgana even though she was so rude to her earlier. This world doesn’t deserve Guinevere.
Morgana breaking Alvarr out of the dungeons
Uther knowing exactly who broke Alvarr out of the dungeons but not being able to say it because then he'd actually have to punish her, so he’s reduced to just making vague threats
Kilgharrah being super pissed that he's not free yet

"The dragon, that attacked Camelot, is standing right in front of me." Gwen says hoarsely, still unable to believe it was true, despite said dragon standing right in front of her.
"It's kind of normal for me, actually." Merlin shrugs, looking as if this is as common as the sun shining.
Once again Gwen finds herself wondering, how the hell she even got in this mess. Right. Because of the other dragon running rampant throughout the kingdom.
Or
After Arthur's death, Gwen and Merlin take it upon themselves to bring magic back to Camelot. The Once and Future King might be dead but the Once and Future Queen is still alive.

Magic, Monsters and Merthur - 1x01 - (Monsters)
Hello hello. Welcome back.
By monsters I used to mean the magical creatures of the episode, like the afanc, the fomorroh and so on and so on.
But... I kind of realized that there aren’t that many monsters in the show. Not in every episode, at least, sometimes it’s just... people doing shitty things with magic.
*gasp*
I said, dramatically. What if... the people... are the MONSTERS?!?!?!?!?
Not a... An amazing revelation, since... Well, since season 4 I realized just how much I actually talk about the villains. I like the villains, surprisingly, when I know that in the end they don’t win. First time through, I was fuming literally every episode, wishing someone killed the bastards already.
During the re-watch? I started admiring them, and what they did, and their thought process. Call me a psychopath, but if I know that my boy Merlin and my sunshine Arthur don’t actually get permanently hurt by the big bad of the episode, I’m able to just sit back and relax, think of it as a battle of wits instead of screeching at my screen to someone fucking notice the villain.
I like battles of wit.
Sadly, I don’t usually have much to say about the villain. Most of it comes down to the magic they use, and I decided to make a separate post for that, so...
How about I throw in a few character moments too? Just to... Not make this post 2 paragraphs long.
I think I managed that and more already...
OH WAIT I JUST REALIZED I HATE KILGHARRAH.
HELL YEAH LET’S TALK ABOUT BITCH ASS OVERGROWN LIZARD.
AND UTHER!
OH I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THE MAIN BIG BADS. HELL YEAH, THIS PART OF THE RE-WATCH IS NOT GOING TO BE EMPTY WHATSOEVER.
(I get really fired up at times... Please understand that I am ranting to a fictional character that will never actually hear me, and knowing that doesn’t dim my anger, it does the opposite since I know they can’t retaliate :))
<_><_><_>
“No young man, no matter how great...
Can know his destiny.
He cannot glimpse his part in the great story that is about to unfold...
Like everyone, he must live... and learn.”
00:09
Already, ALREADY, not even a MINUTE into the FIRST EPISODE, Kilgharrah is contradicting himself.
How the fuck can anyone think this dragon is anything but a manipulative little shit that has his own unknown agenda.
Fuck Kilgharrah.
NOT EVEN A MINUTE IN.
(I just thought that maybe Kilgharrah means it literally when he says "man", as in, human.
BUT I THREW THAT OUT THE WINDOW BECAUSE THEN KILGHARRAH WOULDN'T TELL MERLIN'S DESTINY TO HIM, SINCE MERLIN IS STILL A MAN, "HOWEVER GREAT".)
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media Tumblr media
02:14
Let’s start the “Uther is a sick fuck” book early.
Butchering a man, and then calling it a “lesson”? Yep.
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
02:42
You think Uther does this whole speech every time he orders someone to be hanged, just to stroke his own ego?
I believe it.
Prick.
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media
08:56
Why is the chopping block still there? Don’t they dismantle the execution areas after the execution?
Are there more people scheduled to be killed later or is Uther just that afraid someone’s going to overthrow him and keeps his “intimidation” block to try and fail to prevent it?
Uther’s a sick fuck anyways.
<_><_><_>
<_><_><_>
“Uther made it his mission to destroy everything from back then, even the dragons.”
“All of them?”
“There was one dragon he chose not to kill. Kept it as an example.”
21:11
One for the “Uther is a sick fuck” book!
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media
26:17
And who tells him he’s supposed to stay a nobody, a servant pushed around and berated constantly, to this little insecure bean who is incredibly confused about everything that’s happening to him, just to fulfill some bullshit “destiny” of his?
Kilgharrah.
Fuck Kilgharrah.
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media Tumblr media
32:24
Fucking hell Kilgharrah...
Just two days ago he was talking some shit about “nO OnE cAn KnOw ThEiR dEsTiNy” and now he’s just outright saying what’s going to happen.
FUCK IT IF IT’S THE ONLY WAY FOR THOSE THINGS TO COME TRUE, THIS IS MANIPULATIVE AND THE WAY OF A HYPOCRITE IT IS NO BETTER THAN UTHER AND WHAT HAPPENS LATER ON DOES NOT EXCUSE THIS PRICK, BECAUSE THE NOW IS NOW AND RIGHT NOW ALL I’M SEEING IS ONE BITCH ASS OVERGROWN LIZARD BEING A SLAVE TO HIS OWN PROPHECIES.
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media Tumblr media
33:22
Perhaps it is not someone’s duty to change someone for the better, because a relationship where someone is a slave to the other is not healthy and inherently abusive.
This should be more hated, the fact that this is how Merlin and Arthur got to be their dynamic duo. But since it’s not, I’m just going to keep seething here in my corner about how Merlin was never allowed to be his own person, to try to become great simply because of his magic and unite Albion all on his own, instead was thrown an identity that didn’t even suit him and just barely got by not losing himself completely, which you could say he managed to do only up until season 5, maybe 4.
Just the fact that everything could have gone in a much more different direction and the fact that MERLIN NEVER ACTUALLY NEEDED ARTHUR to be himself or do magic or save all of Camelot repeatedly makes me froth at the mouth and forced me to make that theory you read before you dove into this. That there were two prophecies of how Albion was united, and only one of them spoke of Merlin being under a boot for years and years. The other was made solely for me to cope with this shit and think of a better way for Albion to be united – since that seems to be the focus here, not Arthur becoming king. Arthur could have been thrown aside and Merlin could have been the benevolent sorcerer king who brought peace to everything, but nO.
Justice for Merlin. My boy deserved way better than this.
AND THE TRIUMPHANT TITLE MUSIC PLAYS RIGHT HERE I FUCKING CAN’T THIS IS WHAT’S TRIUMPHANT – MERLIN BEING SOLD TO ARTHUR BY A FUCKING DRAGON HUH???
As you can quite clearly see…
I really hate how Merlin ended up as a servant.
But I come around quickly because Arthur isn’t a complete prat all the time and he doesn’t abuse Merlin like he could if he truly hated him. I come around to this whole thing as quickly as Arthur does – by episode 2.
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media
38:56
Anyone else kinda bothered she didn’t even try to hide the body? Well I know that what she’s about to do will probably result in her death or at least jail time, and it doesn’t even matter if they also find a dead body in her chambers and put two and two together, but like… What if someone walked in before it was time to leave and go do her one-in-a-lifetime performance and they caught her? Would she have killed them too? Would she also have left their body just lying there and people kept coming, and she kept killing them, until there was a whole pile and someone would eventually come by looking for all the dead people and they’d see it and they’d scream and then more people would be alerted and her plan would go to shit?
Just an… Alternate universe idea. Would have been a hilarious first episode.
<_><_><_>
Tumblr media
39:12
What if Uther just dropped a ton of cloth on himself, called it fashionable and hanged anyone who dared point out how ridiculous it is?
<_><_><_>
Heh... Mostly about Kilgharrah, huh? Yeah... I can’t wait for season 5, just to watch this old fuck wither away.
Fuck Kilgharrah. There’s a reason that’s a tag.
Also, a thing.
The Villain List
1. Mary Collins (what a surprise...)
It’s episodic villains, for now. The true evil is too much to be compared to these cute witchy-poos...

▲ + magic reveal?
SALT I GUESS.
okay, so when it comes to the magic reveal, i actually really do like this episode. obviously i hate it because of the immense pain, but i’m also evil. i like the way it was structured, the way arthur’s coping progressed. i didn’t like things like the whole servant thing which was just... honestly unfair, but it’s a whole other thing and i don’t wanna get to it too much right now.
what i hate though, it’s the fact that this shouldn’t have been just one episode. like i get it, what they wanted to achieve, but they had no time to properly go through each of the steps, properly react without the dooming feeling of arthur being about to die, you know. they deserved better than this. the magic reveal deserved at least a season of actually building a healthy relationship, and also obviously getting rid of the annoying fact that merlin spent this whole time STILL being a damn servant ya feel.
like, again, the reveal is beautiful in itself, i’m just really mad that it was one painful episode with them being backed into the corner instead of having the time to properly deal with it, you know. plus like that one moment that kind of irks me the wrong way, but what can you do.
plus, one more reason why it should have happened sooner is something to think about. because just imagine for a second, right, that this happened earlier. they work through all these lies and issues. become equals in a proper sense of it (i can’t stress enough how all of this annoys me that by the end they weren’t). and THEN all of this shit happens anyway. that they just brushed against what could have been, but everything still happens i mean.
kilgharrah insited he fulfilled his destiny, but he really didn’t. magic was still outlawed, everything was still shitty, and if they actually began the changes but it all went to hell anyway, and merlin has an eternity to think about it, i mean how painful is that.
so basically what irks me the most is that it was a bunch of injustices towards merlin, as per usual, and not even giving arthur the chance to become what he had a potential for and truly break out of his father’s rules. alas, none of that happened and i’m dead.
