One thing that almost always bothers me about Merlin fics, but is not just the norm, but the rule:
When Arthur tries to repeal the magic ban, it is always the "stuffy old councilmen" who oppose him. Meanwhile, the one or two younger advisors are the ones who are in favor.
Now, I understand why that is. People look at real life and of course, they put it in fics. So if you see that it's the old people who stand against what you fight for, you would imagine that would happen in fantasy as well.
See, here's the thing though: in the Merlin universe, I guarantee that the older people would be the ones who would approve of magic coming back.
And the reason is the very same reason why you despise the elders here today: they are stuck in the old ways, so to speak.
Those men who are 60 or 70 under Arthur's rule would have been 40 or 50 when the purge happened. They would have already been used to a world with magic and would have fought against such an old tradition being outlawed.
Instead, the young men of 30 or even 20, would hardly know a world in which magic was known to be good and everywhere. For them, it would be an old dangerous thing that only mad old people with bad intentions would want to reinstate.
They are people who grew up like Arthur. Indoctrinated by Uther's propaganda. The ones who grew up only seeing magic's destruction.
Of course, this is fiction, YOUR fiction. So you can decide who the bad guys are. But realistically it would be someone older to not only support the return to the old ways but to push for it.
Would they be against Arthur marrying a servant? (a man????????) yes... That's very likely. But not when it comes to magic.
(Of course, there are always exceptions... But still)

How I picture Leon finds out that Merlin has magic:
Merlin was tired.
Not because of the abundance of chores and the fatigue that came from running around after yet another assassin, but because he hadn't used his magic at all for the past month. Yes, even with the presence of the assassin. Gwaine had fortunately been there to knock the guy out and throw him in the dungeons, catching him red-handed.
He had been trying to stay as cautious as possible, which was why he hadn't used magic in such a long time.
But the fact was - Merlin was born with magic. It was as natural as breathing to him. So when he didn't use magic for an extended period of time, he would get tired.
He needed to use magic. Just a small bit.
He would do it in the safety of his room, but he was currently carrying Arthur's armor to his chambers from the training field and it was heavy and he was so so tired and- well, it would only be a small spell.
He put the armor down, checked that no one was around, then held up a palm. His eyes flashed gold and a small fire appeared on top of it.
Just because he had missed his magic, he flashed his eyes gold and made the flame morph into a butterfly. He smiled as it slowly flapped its wings, staying on Merlin's palm.
Then Merlin heard a gasp and he snapped his head to the newcomer.
The thing about knights was that they were trained to be as quiet as possible even in armor. It was required for certain missions as well as hunting. But armor was impossible to be quiet, so Merlin, having spent a significant amount of time with them, had trained himself to automatically hear when they were approaching. And since they were always in their armor anyway, even sleeping in it sometimes, he had relied on that to alert him of anyone crossing the hallway.
After all, anyone else - servants and nobles alike - wouldn't bother quieting their footsteps while walking.
If they did, it would be because of malicious intent so it wouldn't matter if they saw Merlin or not.
But occasionally - very very occassionally - knights walked around without their armor.
That, combined with their light footsteps and silent movements, had caught Merlin unaware.
So when he snapped his head over to look at Leon staring with wide eyes at the butterfly made of flame in his hand, Merlin was surprised. More than that, he was afraid.
The two of them froze, with Leon's gaze on the fire butterfly and Merlin's on Leon, standing rigidly like deers caught in the wild.
Then Leon raised his eyes from the butterfly to Merlin, then back to the butterfly, then back to Merlin again-
Before he spun on his heel and walked the other way whistling jovially like he hadn't seen anything.
Merlin was still frozen like a deer. He didn't move until several minutes later when he did hear armor clinking against each other. That was when he got rid of the butterfly and hefted the armor up, walking back to his room, leaving Arthur's armor in favor of panicking.
~
When Merlin met Leon in the armory that evening, he tried to approach him. Leon, recognizing what Merlin was trying to do, let him, moving into a secluded changing room far from the armory with the other knights and squires and pages.
Leon nodded at Merlin in greeting when Merlin closed the door.
"Leon," Merlin started. "What you saw-"
"That you were shirking Arthur's chores? No worries. I didn't give you away before, I won't do so now."
Merlin blinked. "What?"
Leon sighed. "Look, Merlin. I don't get paid enough, even as a knight. Not with all those missions and calamities that keep getting Arthur into trouble. So I refuse to deal with anything above my paygrade. Even you avoiding chores."
Merlin blinked again.
Leon clapped a hand on his shoulder, and with a smile, left the room.
Merlin looked after the knight, wondering for the first time, exactly how many times the knight had committed or aided or turned a blind eye against treason for him to be this casual about it.

“I’m getting married,” Arthur says. He is suddenly unable to breath. His chest tight, his fists closed. I’m getting married. It was an admission of guilt, of his weakness. A sentence which should strike joy into his heart, but can only make him grieve.
Merlin turns around. He does not look surprised. “I know,” he confesses, and the words ring in Arthur’s ears. He knows. He should not.
“I asked Gwen to marry me last night.” Perhaps he is admitting, or clarifying or just simply informing. It does not matter. Merlin puts down the clothes he was folding and smiles. As if it is a good thing.
“I know,” he says. “She told me. Right after.” But it is too late. And Arthur is sobbing, furiously wiping his tears as if that will make them disappear. He is six years old again, with his father standing over him and scolding him for crying. Except he is not, and Merlin would never say that.
“I’m so sorry Merlin,” it is barely audible. He is not sure if he should repeat himself to make sure Merlin heard him. Because he needs Merlin to hear him. He needs to make sure Merlin knows he is sorry. He is sorry. For his weakness. For his cowardice.
“Oh, it is okay Arthur. It is okay,” sighs Merlin. He is so perfect, so kind. He is the man Arthur wants to marry, but cannot. He is the person Arthur wants to spend the rest of his life with, but cannot.
Arthur sobs in his arms. His face is scrunched up. His eyes shut tightly. He fears that if he opens them, Merlin will be gone.
He thinks of the life he should have. The one where his blond children dart down the halls of the castle. Where his wife kisses him goodnight, and he can only think of how much he loves her. The one where Merlin, his best friend, stands by his side, as a good friend, uncle, brother. Not what he is now. Not the love of Arthur’s life.
“Why could you not have been a girl?” He feels Merlin’s chin against the back of his head, can feel the way his hair dampens as Merlin starts crying too. Perhaps it is only good if Merlin is with someone else, someone who is not Arthur.

Though I’m still on a social media break, I HAD to log back into tumblr, specifically to share the link to this Podfic.
I never thought anyone would want to/be able to/have the time to transform the 209,000 words of “And Like The Cycle Of The Year, We Begin Again” into a Podfic. And indeed, it took this talented crew of people a few years to manage this amazing task. But here it is. Amazing, and heart-warming and oh. My goodness. I have no words.
The link is below for your listening pleasure. It’s multi-voice, and being posted regularly. Be sure to kudo, and/or comment, to thank the creative team who spent so long to create it.

Soo... Just hearmeowt.
A while ago I had an idea to a merthur fanfiction. (It is my original idea and if this has been made before please do inform me.)
So because I am very very incredibly bored I decided to tell chat gpt my idea and have it create a summary for the fic.
Summary:
In a realm where magic and destiny intertwine, the legend of Merlin and Arthur takes a profound turn. In this world, balance is not just a concept but a law, as immutable as the stars. Merlin, the immortal sorcerer bound to the Pendragon lineage, carries a secret burden—a magical tether that binds his fate to Arthur's, the once and future king.
For every wound Merlin suffers that should have claimed his life, a mark appears on Arthur, not as a wound but as a scar, etched into his skin like a tattoo born of fire. These marks do not pain Arthur, yet they burn with the intensity of a flame, a constant reminder of battles fought and unseen forces at play.
Arthur, raised in the chivalrous life of a knight, had always believed these scars to be battle wounds, a testament to his bravery and strength. However, his father, King Uther, a man with a heart hardened by his crusade against magic, sees something more sinister in these mysterious marks. He watches, suspicion growing like a disease, as Arthur accumulates scars even when he hasn't stepped foot on the battlefield.
The pivotal moment comes during a time of plague, when Arthur is bedridden, his strength sapped by fever and illness. Merlin, ever loyal, takes up arms alongside the knights, venturing into the fray to protect the kingdom that Arthur cannot defend.
It is during this time that Uther, visiting his son, notices fresh scars blossoming on Arthur's skin—scars that could not possibly have come from his sickbed. The realization strikes Uther with the force of a thunderbolt: these are no ordinary scars, and his son, born of magic himself, might be entangled in sorcery.
Haunted by paranoia and the fear of magic, Uther confronts Merlin, demanding answers to the riddles that have plagued his reign. It is then, under the weight of accusation and the threat of death, that Merlin reveals the truth of their connection, a truth as old as time itself.
A MERTHUR SOULMATES AU (the whole show was a soulmates au but bare with me.)
Anyways if you liked the idea, do tell me. And if enough people will like it I'll write it!
Let me know! ~L

I'd like to join in on the "_ fell first, _ fell harder" debate because I have been seeing many posts which argue that Merlin fell first and Arthur fell harder and... Ah ah ah ah. No. No that is not what happened.
Arthur fell the moment this twink with an attitude came to him and called his ass out. No one aside from Morgana has ever dared SASS him in his life and it made him find out some things about himself. Whereas Merlin saw an asshole and said: "What a bitch" and tried to punch him. Arthur liked that. Merlin didn't like Arthur sending him to the dungeons.
In the first episodes, Merlin is keeping him safe because of destiny, while Arthur is willing to trust him (ep. 2) save his life after a magic confession (ep. 3), and give his life (ep.4).
Arthur fell first.
By the time season five arrives Merlin is lost. He hasn't just fallen for Arthur. He has dug himself a hole so deep he can't see the bottom just that he can fall that much harder. He is quite simply obsessed with keeping Arthur safe and happy. Not for his destiny (which he has by now completely forgotten) but for Arthur.
There is no one else in his mind but his King, so much so that in the first episode of the last season he would not think twice before leaving all his knight friends to die, if it meant bringing Arthur to Camelot safe and away for Morgana. He gives up his and thousands of people's life and freedom for Arthur. This guy is completely gone for Arthur and can't think about anyone else.
On the other hand, Arthur CAN and does think about others... Gwen, his knights, and his people, even if he values Merlin "above all others".
So Arthur fell first. But Merlin fell harder.
Dat's how I see it anyway, feel free to disagree 💪

a lesson in manners
For @merlinmicrofic. Prompt: "Then go", Arthur/Merlin/Gwen, Established Relationship, Gen. Words: 500
“Well.” Merlin rises from his chair. “If there's nothing else.”
Guinevere turns to him – her disappointment clear in her eyes, even though she tries to keep it from her voice. “You’re leaving?”
“Sorry.” Merlin smiles apologetically. “I promised Gaius I would be back in time for supper.”
Which is fair enough. Merlin’s been dining with Arthur and Guinevere more often than not, lately. They have – perhaps selfishly – grown used to his presence.
“Hardly the first time you've kept him waiting,” Arthur observes. Just to be contrary.
“Precisely. He's starting to ask questions.”
“What sort of questions?” Guinevere asks.
Merlin looks at her with a pointed raise of his eyebrows. “Ones I'd rather not answer.” Guinevere’s mouth curves into a faint smile. She closes her eyes when Merlin leans down to kiss her temple.
“I'll see you tomorrow. Good night.” Merlin nods at Arthur before going to the door.
Guinevere looks at him with a hint of sadness in her eyes – which, as a general rule, Arthur finds unacceptable. Guinevere should never look sad. Not in his presence. Not if he can help it.
“Merlin?” Arthur calls. Merlin stops, his hand on the handle. “Is that the way to take leave of your king?”
Merlin looks puzzled. “I'm sorry. Did I forget to bow?” he asks, and he does so, with a jester-like flourish.
Arthur rolls his eyes. “Yes. Not that it matters. Come here.”
“Arthur…” Merlin protests, weakly, but he obeys his beckoning.
“Guinevere got a kiss. I was just wondering at the disparity of treatment,” Arthur explains – not because he cares, but just to keep Merlin there a little longer.
Merlin clicks his tongue. “She's nicer than you.”
Arthur just looks at him.
Merlin sighs, theatrically, and Guinevere giggles.
Good.
When Merlin bends down – no doubt to give Arthur a quick peck on the lips – Arthur grabs his ridiculous neckerchief and pulls. Merlin gasps, grasping one of Arthur’s arms as he tips over, and slamming his knee next to Arthur’s thigh to avoid smashing his face against the back of his chair.
“Arthur— ” The rest of his objection is rudely interrupted by Arthur’s mouth.
Arthur kisses Merlin until he’s breathless – maybe from the kiss, maybe from the cloth that’s pulled tight around his neck. Arthur doesn’t loosen his grasp. He knows Merlin likes it.
When Arthur breaks their kiss, Merlin blinks at him vacantly. He moves his lips as if to shape a word, but seems to have forgotten what he wanted to say.
Then, he remembers. “Gaius is waiting,” he mumbles – eyes fixed on Arthur's mouth.
Arthur lets go of Merlin’s neckerchief and pats his chest. “Then go,” he says, amiably.
Merlin gets to his feet – a bit shakily. His ears are red. He walks to the door again, turns as if to say something, then frowns and closes his mouth. Wordlessly, he leaves.
Guinevere starts laughing.
Good.
“That was mean,” she says.
Arthur takes her hand and kisses it. “Don’t worry. We’ll make it up to him.”

We Begin Again Series Update:
- I’m looking to post the last story of the series to AO3 in December 2023, chapter by chapter, with it being finished for the Merlinversary.
- There will be a summary at the start, so anyone should be able to pick it up and read it if you’ve read nothing else in the series. I mean, it’ll help, but not necessary. I want all the suffering Merlin fans to be able to find solace around the anniversary of Diamond of the Day (and Agony of Christmas Night).
- The new story will be LOCKED, which means you need an AO3 account to read it. Sorry about that. It’s the AI clusterfuck that’s occurring. I’m leaving all my previous works open, though, because I think the cow has left the barn there already.
Back to editing during my lunch hour, you know, as one does.
