whenever I try to think Uther as a cruel Father, my mind would go to that scene where he carries him, crying. Fuck! The root of the whole problem is that he had a heart! Imagine him as a cruel man, vindictive but he wasn't heartless, if that had been, purge wouldn't have happened. He'd have moved and taken another wife, come to think of it, he didn't take another wife, nobody would have begrudge him, he was the king afterall, and one prince isn't enough to secure the bloodline and the throne. So yeah, Uther did love Arthur and Morgana, Morgana's betrayal was so deep he went mad man! Truly astounding. That a man who committed genocide was a human and had a heart and he loved his children. Truly, too much complexity
The difference between Uther and Gaius / Arthur and Merlin is that uther didn't accept gaius completely. Their loyalty to each other was based on uther's condition that you must leave magic, which it was a big part of gaius's life, so it was like leaving a part of himself and all his memories for Uther and guarantee for his life, as for Arthur he didn't care at all about Merlin having magic, than that Merlin didn't trust him enough to tell him, and what Arthur did ? he told him that he didn't want him to change and accepted him completely and without conditions
we fuckin hate Uther in this house but those times he'd look at Merlin and be like "wtf is wrong with Arthur rn??" were so funny
like Uther was very firmly on the you're too close to this boy train but the moment Arthur was doing something weird he'd look at Merlin like "boy fix this rn"
uther doesn't approve of bottom!arthur, but nevermind the relationship with his manservant
[ALSO, thank you guys so much for all the love in the last merlin meme redraw, i really didn't think it would get that much attention!! :00 so thankyaa <3 you're amazing]
I think it would be insanely funny if after Arthur’s death everyone returns back in time to the place they were the day Merlin arrived in Camelot. But like, everyone thinks they are the only ones who has returned. We see it all from Merlin’s pov, who’s traumatised and wondering why the fuck Arthur is so much sweeter to him this time around and keeps saying ‘thank you’. He wonders why Lancelot shows up earlier, why all of a sudden Gwaine is there three years too early, saying he got hurt in a tavern bawl and needs a physician. He wonders why Leon keeps pretending like he didn’t just accidentally see Merlin do magic. Why Gwen keeps giving him these knowing looks. And why Morgana doesn’t seem as afraid as she used to when she was figuring out that she had magic. Everyone is trying their best to change history for the better, thinking they are alone with this duty... and then one day when uther is dead and they are sitting around the round table, merlin steps forward and is like: ‘I need to confess that I have magic, but also that I have returned from the future.’ And everyone just whips around and is like ‘YOU TOO??!’ And then they realise that they’ve all returned and wasted their time thinking they were alone.
One of my favorite merthur scenes is Merlin’s “I didn’t want you to feel that you were alone” and it’s so beautiful for so many reasons, but what I don’t see ever mentioned is the moments right after Arthur opens the doors. Merlin doesn’t look at Arthur or give any indication he’s awake until he says Merlin’s name.
I think it’s so special because he’s giving Arthur the choice of what he wants to do. He can leave Merlin there and be alone or he can ‘wake him up’ and have a friend. He knows Arthur might not want to engage with anyone after an entire night spent with his deceased father. It’s a beautiful, understated act of consideration, love, and empathy.
