An arc that should’ve been added in Merlin was just how downright terrified Merlin was of him.
Especially with the whole magic thing. He was scared of Arthur. Scared of him as a warrior. Scared that everytime he wielded a sword Merlin thought it was meant for him. Scared that every glare just a little too harsh, every comeback just a little too snippy and suddenly he’d be staring at Arthur from the guillotine.
Arthur was his executioner. Arthur was his grim reaper, waiting for an opening so he could swoop in. But most of all, Merlin was scared of him as a friend. As someone he trusted. Because if he let magic slip around him, even just one flicker that’s the last time he would see Arthur smile at him.
And Arthur notices. He doesn’t know why Merlin flinches a bit too hard when Arthur mock draws his sword in a show of anger, he can’t place his finger on how if he added even a little heat behind those words his friend would stiffen.
Until one day Merlin has to accompany him to face a magic kight who he’s clearly nervous about. And it’s only when Merlin flinches do the pieces slide together for him. That it clicks why Merlin’s face looked so familiar whenever Arthur accidentally overstepped a boundary he never knew existed.
I want to see the look on his face as he stared at his best friend, and realised that he was afraid of him.
And obviously the Angsty arc following Arthur trying to redeem himself and be better towards Merlin without changing their dynamic too much and Merlin is getting more and more tense because with how soft Arthur’s acting it’s like he’s winning Merlin’s trust, and maybe Merlin wants to tell him if the man keeps this up.

Merlin's trending, so I'm gonna spill a bit about an au that's been bouncing around my head that idk if I'll ever write. Anyway.
Merlin Lucifer AU
Merlin has given up on finding Arthur at this point and has just decided to enjoy life for a while. He's tired of looking into a thousand "Arthur's" a day and being constantly disappointed. By this point, Merlin barely even remembers what Arthur ever looked like. Just vague impressions of golden like and blue oceans.
He owns a bar in LA that he's named Avalon and goes by Merlin Emrys because no one believes Merlin is a real person and he doesn't care anymore.
Then there's Arthur, the detective he's decided to pester. As various cases open around the town, Merlin helps as a civilian consultant and uses discrete magic to help them along. Arthur is skeptical of Merlin's entire stick which is just even more entertaining for Merlin.
Anyway, blah, blah, blah, various hijinks ensue and eventually Merlin figures out Arthur is really his king, has a crisis, and the pair bring about some peace/happily ever after

I love bbc merlin so much because despite the variety of plot points that drive me insane they’re all needed for everything to play out correctly.
I hate that Merlin’s magic isn’t revealed till the very end but also recognize how incredibly powerful he is that if everyone knew their external threats just. Wouldn’t be a threat anymore.
And I hate that Arthur never repeals the ban on magic but if he did than Mordred wouldn’t have had a reason to turn and the finale would fall flat.
I can’t stand Agrivaine but I understand that Arthur being betrayed by him is necessary in order to make Merlin’s perceived betrayal hurt more. That it serves to break down Arthur’s confidence in a time where he only trusts Merlin, who brings him back to himself. Then to realize that foundation of trust he’s had has been wrong and that he has literally been deceived by every single person he lets get close to him.
I hate how they ruined morgana’s character and while I still think it could have been done with more nuance, there is literally no major antagonist besides her. Plus she’s such an interesting one because of her connections to everyone before she slipped.
I hate that merlin tries to kill her, especially like that, and so early on. I get why he does it, and I get that it’s necessary to break morgana’s trust in him. I get that the whole point is that every choice he makes is to try and stop things and he does the best he can every single time, and it’s still never enough.
I don’t always like how we get there but GOD do I love the tragedy of it. For a show that’s so happy on the surface the tragedy of knowing there’s nothing any of them can do to stop the ending is SO GOOD.
It’s devastating to watch merlin lose huge pieces of himself, watch his morals change and shift, watch as the lines he won’t cross get pushed farther and farther away. He loses so much of himself to save Arthur and he STILL LOSES ARTHUR.
And listen I can and I will complain about some of the goofy ass plots but it’s so important to me that people recognize the seriously tragic narrative at the Center of it. I could go on for AGES about how each and every one of the leads is doomed by the narrative.
