Supervillains for a community. (Well, except those jerks over in Gotham, insular lot, but they’re they’re one problem) Of course they do- supervillains are a group defined by strong opinions and a willingness to see them through, often with a healthy dash of societal failures and trauma as a catalyst.

The fentons, while not active even on the online message boards, are well known and explosive when they do show up, full of fascinating insights and hours long rants on mad science on hair pin turns courtesy of that ADHD attention span. Bit of the cryptids you feel honored to bump into kind of deal. Besides, like a good quarter of the community as it aged, they’d settled down and had kids (not necessarily in that order) and taken it very seriously! Out in the middle of nowhere, where even the most fearsome government outpost members, the local branch of the IRS, quake before them in fear. Out of the way.

Reveal gone okay-ish, Danny moves to Gotham still to get some air bc now things are Akward and he landed that engineering scholarship which is loads better than any other college would give him with his track record. So- the mysterious Fenton children are finally crawling out of hiding! Everyone is psyched! And roll in to Gotham en masse to witness the fireworks!

Except Danny is Determined To Be Normal. He’s had enough of the throwing himself into harms way shit for a lifetime- he wants to be free to peacefully built Rube Goldberg machines and unintentional increasingly complex bombs to his hearts content. JAZZ, on the other hand- the coveted token Normal One, has finally snapped! She’s watched her baby brother she practically raised throw himself into danger over and over and could do nothing, and now that she’s exposed to this whole network of superheroes outside of small town Amnity, some of those uglier emotions are coming out. And boy is she pissed! And can’t afford to show it much while filing the paperwork to have Arkham legally razed to the ground!

See I love this idea of like, niches in superhero society. A villain the heroes know they can plop their kiddo down with for an exciting afternoon brawl while they take care of a particularly grisly case and come back to a few hours later ranting about some new life lesson and a new move they really want to try. A villain who has a functioning moral compass despite their somewhat batshit long term goal and you can contact to fuck with another villains’s plan so they can laugh at them and you can have an easy afternoon. One who pries up hostile architecture and fills in pot holes, idk man. Get creative here, there’s such potential!

So Jazz becomes a Training villain- someone the heroes know their sidekicks will walk away from in a fight 100% of the time, usually with some new lesson to ponder and only a couple of bruises. Sometimes even snacks!

She also absolutely ambushes mentors to check that they’re worth the kiddo, which they appreciate once they get over being jumped in a dark alley by a 7 foot Amazon trained force of nature. They are not used to being on that side of the jumping, it’s a little unnerving.

(Yes, she low key adopts Shazam upon checking in with him on cursory ‘is the main hero of this city and asshole’ checkin. Yes, the super clones get yoinked out from under Superman’s negligent thumb to go have a blast with Ellie. What about it?)

This however only encourages more assorted weirdos to crawl out of the woodwork. It’s not often one of their own forfeits their potential spot for the running of the coveted Most Normal I Swear prize, but when they do it’s bound to be good! But jazz is off hounding various heroes and punching the faces in of pedophiles and shit whenever there’s no cape within easy reach, and so is a mite bit harder to contact than Danny, who has innocently gotten an apprenticeship under a clockworker for access to their workshop and is gleefully going about doing nerdy shit with great abandon.

Plus this is Gotham. No one gives a shit if someone in the Mad Alchemist uniform and still smoking from their latest experiment pokes their head in a window to bother the local shrimp teen- none of the usual social rules apply, everyone’s crazy here! So everyone drops any and all attempts at masking and just acts their genuine unhinged selves, much to the alarm of the Bats and frustration of Danny.

Bc he cannot get these mfers to go. Away. Even liberal use of the creep stick has little effect when the interloper is calibrated for an opponent with super speed or laser vision or whatever, and he’s trying to maintain his guise as a Normal College Student Do No Investigate.

So he calls in the big guns. He’s not super active in the supervillain kids group chat ever since things in amnity calmed the fuck down post becoming King and then immediately using a loophole that says he will not take the throne until he is grown, as defined by finishing learning his trade a la the medieval standards Pariah set up. So he can just take his sweet ass time with his graduate degree and out of inter dimensional bull shit that much longer! Point is, he hasn’t taken the chance to rant over there in a while, so his Crazy friends are getting a lil worried.

The change to come over and shout at their batshit crazy but (mostly) well meaning parent AND see Danny? Score!

The bats, however, are getting awfully suspicious about this one kid that villains from all over the country are flocking to, especially young and upcoming ones as of recently! And he’s acting his engineering course- all the worst rogues are known to have flown through their PhD studies prior to Cracking. They seem to have a real problem on their hands with this Fenton guy.

Okay, so a while back me and @mac-cheez came up with a list of what was supposed to be Gotham cereals, which quickly evolved into any breakfast food, and then food in general. So, here's that list.

First, let's get most of the cereals out of the way

First of all, Count Chocula is the only on brand cereal sold in the city because no one wants to sell in this hellhole and also is funny

Bat Crunch is the batman themed cereal, Man-Bat Crunchies is the off brand of that.

ok i mentioned that i watched hxh 1999 the other week when i was sick and i also rewatched 2011 (minus the ch*m*ra *nt arc) so here r some expanded thoughts on the 2 adaptations:

why tf would 2011 cut kite out of the first episode(s). this is unforgivable. it UNBELIEVABLY weakens the entire ch*m*ra ant arc (i hate it to begin with but cutting gon’s previous connection to kite makes is so much stupider)

2011 hisoka would tear 1999 hisoka to PIECES. 99 hisoka is just kinda weird and off-putting but 2011 hisoka is TERRIFYING and charismatic and seductive and disgusting and 85% of the heavy lifting is done by namikawa daisuke’s voice acting but he has so much more PRESENCE in ‘11

99 gon is so babey omg. look at him

2011 killua is also extremely babey and i like that, but i also like how he seems a bit older in 99. i don’t prefer one take over the other i just like the flavor variations it adds

99 cut most of the kastro fight?? WHY?

2011 really nerfed leorio lmao when i was watching 2011 i was like theres no way this guy should have passed the hunter exam. but in 99 it’s a little more believable because he’s not a complete dolt. justice for my man he ain’t done anything wrong

the choreo and technical aspects of kurapika vs uvo are better in 2011 but 99 really hammers home how disgusted and conflicted krpk is over the whole thing. i loved his prayer before the fight begins and his breakdown when it ended. how completely done in he was by just one fight with one spider. 2011 focuses more on his anger and doesn’t give it the gravity it needs (KURAPIKA ⛓️🩸IS DROWNING🌊IN AN INDESCRIBABLE EMPTINESS 🕳️🚶‍♂️🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶😝) (WHAT WERE THEY THINKING)

the fight between chrollo and the zoldycks seemed weird to me in 2011 because it takes place in a bright yellow room. 1999 gave it a much darker atmosphere that i think it deserves

it CANNOT be understated just how much of a difference mozart’s lacrimosa/dies irae makes in 2011. the 1999 requiem was so empty without it

i know it’s filler but i really really like how gon meets leorio first in 99. they have such a special relationship and i think giving them a little side quest together before they meet the other boys was an inspired choice

they were not kidding, 1999 chrollo really does look like michael scott. tf

in 1999 kurapika actually seems like a boy. i cant explain it but 2011 kurapika will always be a girl to me

Role Reversal AU

Basically, the heroes are villains and the villains are heroes or civilians.

There's a lot of information that I packed into this post.

Beings that aren't included in the swap are: Captain Marvel/Shazam/Champion Teth/Black Adam Captain N*zi (because fuck no is any n*zi going to be anything but evil. No Marvel mistakes with this au.) The Seven Deadly Enemies of Man Literally all of the villains trapped on/in the Rock of Eternity Orange Lantern The Blue Lanterns The Indigo Lanterns White and Black Lanterns Demons maybe Constantine? what do you guys think? Darkseid (good darkseid could be interesting tho) Doomsday Hfuhruhurr (aka Word-Bringer; an alien that collects brains from all over the universe to create an immortal hive mind called "The Union") Mongul 5th dimensional beings (they just like annoying people in general) Pariah Dark probably more

Some Heroes: Amity Park - Plasmius, Technus, Skulker, GIW, Maddie & Jack Gotham - Joker, Two-Face, Bane, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Ra's Al Ghul (the LOA is more like a secret watcher's society but more infighting in a friendly way) Metropolis - Lex Luthor, Cyborg Superman, Metallo, Parasite London - Cheetah, Giganta, Circe(part-time) Justice League (leaders) - Talia Al Ghul, Lex, Professor Zoom, Cheetah, Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris), Black Manta, Cyborgirl Justice League (general) - Poison Ivy, Gorilla Grodd, Captain Marvel, Red Lantern(Guy Gardner), etc.

Most villains who don't commit any violent crime are simply civilians in this au. (ex: Catwoman, Box Ghost, or Kite Man) Some villains - like Sivanna - become civilians while their family members become villains.

Some background info:

Danny dies and it pisses him off that his parents don't notice. Sam and Tucker agree and they become menaces to Amity Park. Maddie and Jack notice and decide that someone needs to reign in the troublemakers, which makes things worse. Then, the ghosts start noticing and they start sending a ghost to take care of the rogue ghost. Eventually, they find that Skulker and Technus are best suited to deal with the trio. Wolf and Cujo join the trio. Plasmius joins Skulker and Technus and they start trying to clone Danny to try to create an equal to fight against him. The clones are mostly viable because of the help of Technus and the Fentons. Team Phantom kill the clones except for Dani, who joins them. Jazz, while not evil, isn't good either. She just wants to prevent her brother from killing their parents. Because all the good guys are much less concerned with keeping civilians safe, there are a few casualties, which includes Jazz. Jazz notices that Team Phantom might be right about her parents, so she leaves Amity and eventually teams up with Zatanna. TLDR; Danny's mad at his parents and makes Team Phantom to cause chaos around Amity Park. Jazz leaves after she dies and joins Zatanna.

Zatanna (and her father) were low level thieves that were performing as stage magicians before Nabu's helmet turned Giovanni into Dr Fate. Zatanna became enraged at how he wouldn't give her father back and started murdering and stealing other magic user's powers and tomes in hopes of one day returning her father to her. After she found Jazz, who offered to help remove the helmet, she stopped murdering as many people. The two often help Klarion get in the way of Nabu's plans to get rid of anything he perceives as chaotic. While they happen to befriend Klarion, they never stop stealing.

Bruce becomes Owlman and is in charge of the Court of Owls. Tim, Dick, and Jason become Talons. Alfred is known as the Executioner. Barbara is a jewel thief until she loses the ability to walk thanks to falling off a roof while being chased by Joker. After, she becomes a cyber security threat that constantly steals, releases criminals from jail, and hacks into whatever tech the heroes use. Kate becomes a mob boss. Signal starts out stealing, but accidentally turns into a small time mob boss that works on the opposite side of the city. Commissioner Gordon is a corrupt cop who is firmly in Bruce's pocket. He sometimes fills in for Bruce during CoO meetings when Lucius can't. Cass is an assassin called Orphan that inspires more fear than (canon) Deathstroke. Steph got annoyed by how often her dad (cluemaster) was out of the house and became Spoiler - a villain similar to (canon) Riddler. Selena, while she's a civilian, also happens to be Bruce's street level informant.

Clark, while still having been raised by Martha and John Kent and becoming Superman, decides that being a hero is rather boring. While ruling the world sounds intriguing, he's seen many other villains that are just as competent as he is that want to rule. So he decides that he wants to be a complete (rather dark) nuisance. He ruins buildings by tagging them with his heat vision, freezes major water sources, cloned Lex and himself (technically it's a test tube baby but whatever) once, finds ways to steal everyone's stashes of kryptonite, and sometimes murders people. Kon or Conner lives with Lex part time and has two loving parents, both of which don't understand why he enjoys randomly jumping into their battles and fighting them both (causing as much property damage as possible). Lois helps keep criminal activity out of the papers and clocks Clark as Superman right away. She regularly publishes smear campaigns against the heroes and paints Superman in good light. Kara and her clone - Powergirl - regularly fight against Parasite and Cyborg Superman who constantly thwart their plans to take over the world (they're taking Lex's route).

Green Lanterns are like corrupt cops whose mission is to exert their will over others. Hal kills his dad's previous employer while Sinestro tries to stop him. Sinestro creates the Sinestro Corps and is much more like "our and others' fears fuel us and drive us to be able to save people" rather than "fear is true power and should be used as a way to control people". When Parallax takes over Hal, they become the ultimate hero but over time Parallax starts to become corrupted by his willpower and Specter jumps in to keep Parallax from becoming the ultimate evil. After a while Parallax decides that Sinestro is a much better host and both him and Specter leave Hal, who decides to take a long break doing petty crime before breaking the Green Lanterns out of prison. Carol, in the beginning, stops Hal and other Green Lanterns from committing crimes but eventually stops and focuses mostly on taking care of her business and the Star Sapphires. The Green Lantern's main enemies are the Yellow Lanterns, Red Lanterns, and the Manhunters. Blue Lanterns tend to avoid the Green Lanterns and work with the Manhunters.

Barry is super cruel and Eobard Thawne (aka Reverse Flash or Professor Zoom) came from the future to prevent him from destroying everything. Barry's backstory is either he killed his mom and pinned it on his dad, or he ran away from home a few times and his parents died while trying to find him. Thawne is very careful about avoiding Barry while he's a civilian, but is aware that he needs to be close in order to prevent Barry from destroying the timeline or murdering everyone.

Diana has plans on taking over the world of man and eradicating the men while leaving the women in order to create a perfect world for women. Cheetah, Giganta, and (to a lesser extent) Cerce understand that men are needed just as much as women are in order for the world to continue on.

So Tom Brevoort, comic book nerd and editor over at Marvel is currently going through the first JLA volume over on his tumblr.

His take on Zatanna's extended backstory involving Sindella is the same as what I hear elsewhere:

<blockquote>Having inducted Zatanna into the League in the previous issue, Conway made her the focus of a multi-part story that delved into her history, background and origins. I don’t know that there was really any more of an origin needed that, “Daughter of Zatara, who employs the same manner of spells that he did”, but Conway felt differently, and so the new recruit became the center of the storyline. I wasn’t entirely sold on this reworked version of Zatanna, though, and so this wasn’t exactly a welcome direction for me. </blockquote>

Whilst Brevoort's blog is worth checking out for his insight into older comics (if you're into it), I have to disagree with his take here.

I get that the story of Sindella is very much a product of it's time and there are some weird bits that take away from the overall story but I think that on paper, the story of a mother and daughter cruelly separated from each other and for their reunion to end in tragedy is one with a lot of potential and is worth revisiting. (I covered Sindella's story here, here and here).

The story also has an important place in DCU lore in that it's also the first time that the term Homo Magi was mentioned. And aside from the silly 'fatal attraction' thing between human and homo magi, I like the idea of homo magi having to isolate themselves from humans because otherwise their magical gene would vanish over the course of a few generations.

I think the main problem is that the story has been left to languish and has not been revisited. Part of why Superman, Batman and Spider-Man stay relevant is because their stories, supporting characters and villains are constantly updated for newer audiences. Look at how characters like Mr Freeze, Kite Man and so many others have been revamped and upgraded over the years.

It also doesn't help that modern retellings often ignore Sindella's place in the lore. Especially egregious was the Young Justice show where they decided to tie the origin of all magic and Homo Magi to Vandal Savage while Sindella had no lines and just died of cancer. None of the bazillion 'all magic is dying' stories in JLD ever touches on Sindella's role in the magical cosmology either for that matter.

So, fingers crossed and hoping that Sindella gets her due one day.

Could you elaborate on the whole JW thing? I think I missed a step.

Ha! It's okay, JW is pretty obscure lore.

Basic rundown:

Greg made a non canon audio play that was a crossover between his Spider-Man show, Young Justice and Gargoyles. Not canon, so shouldn't really be important in theorizing, right? Wrong. For one key reason, Greg said that he accidentally left a spoiler in the script.

That spoiler was later confirmed to be the existence of one JW. JW was mentioned by Artemis in the audio play and she says that Will is watching JW and Lian. This implies that a) JW is a child and that b) JW is either her child or Will's.

(I'm going to start putting pictures in of who I think JW is because he's adorable)

Greg later confirmed that JW is still in the plans for Young Justice just that 'the timeline has changed'. The audio play was set and written after season two, so it isn't hard to imagine whose child JW is supposed to be. The W last name, born a few months after season two, has the same initials as Wally's son the comics (Jai West), ect.

It's easy to see that the plans have since changed but like Greg said, JW is still happening. I don't mind the change. It would've been interesting to see Artemis find out she's pregnant after Wally's death and be a single mom but it'd be way more interesting to have Wally come back and then have them be parents.

Another thing that supports this is that Barry was originally supposed to cease at the end of season two, not Wally, so the original plan probably did have Jai West being born after season two. It's possible that when they changed the speedster to Wally they wanted to keep the original plan as much as possible. Then when the cancellation happened and they revisited the season three plan after a few years they changed their minds and moved JW down the timeline.

I just hope Jai West doesn't happen without his twin sister Irey West. They're a package deal. Do not separate. Irey becomes Impulse in the comics and then later Kid Flash. She's poised to be a Flash when she grows up and she's 100% her father's child in personality and looks. She's a child prodigy when it comes to speed, she was vibrating her molecules through objects before she could even walk in the comics (which makes life incredibly difficult for Wally because he can't follow her) Jai on the other hand has had a weird relationship with his powers. Half the time in the comics he just doesn't have any. I could see him being an archer in Young Justice. It'd be really funny if he was the next Speedy in my opinion.

Can absorb/replicate the Justice League’s powers as well as their weaknesses

“Amazo had no interest in being revived, preferring his electronic ‘sleep of oblivion’ but each time he is reactivated, he carries out his original programming – to destroy the JLA – in hopes that he will be returned to his electronic sleep”

Poor Amazo – being used as a weapon of mass destruction when all he wants is a nap! Amazo’s power-set isn’t unique – Rogue, Nemesis Kid, and the Super-Adaptoid are all examples of this type of power. The Taskmaster is a very stripped-down example of it. Amazo may be the first to have this power-set in comics, as he pre-dates the Super-Adaptoid by six years.

Amazo isn’t an “A-list” enemy of the Justice League but he appears frequently in the various DC media series with notable appearances in Young Justice, Batman: Under The Hood, and the Arrowverse.

Ambush Bug by Keith Giffen & Bob Oksner

Irwin Schwab has teleportation abilities and limited invulnerability derived from his costume.

He first appeared as a super-villain but then decided to become a super-hero, operating out of a small storefront office in Metropolis.

A loner but fantasizes he’s Superman’s power.

I haven’t read much of Ambush Bug but he’s meant to be a silly, fun character.

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld by Ernie Colon

Amethyst is one of the twelve ruling house of Gemworld, beloved by all except for the House of Opal’s Dark Lord

Opal slew Lord and Lady Amethyst. The Amethyst’s faithful servant, Citrina, sent their infant daughter to Earth to be raised in secrecy.

The infant was named Amy and adopted by Herb and Marion Winston.

Time passes differently on Earth than Gemworld so twenty years passed on Gemworld but only 13 had passed on Earth.

Amy was kidnapped back to Gemworld on the eve of her 13th birthday. She found herself to be a twenty year old on Gemworld.

Amy found herself possessed of great mystical power on Gemworld. She took her place as the head of House Amethyst and led a revolt against the despotic Dark Opal.

She now divides her time between Earth and Gemworld.

I said in an earlier post, that I had discovered many of my favorite characters from Who’s Who and the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Amethyst is one of them. I was nine-years old when I read her entry, and I thought she looked and sounded so cool! I loved the concept of Gemworld. I’ve read some of Amethyst’s appearances here and there, particularly in the Legion of Super-Heroes “Five Years Later” era where she was thirsting for revenge against Mordru. I need to dive into her series on the DC app and see if my childhood love holds up.

Angle Man by Jose Delbo & Romeo Tanghal

Angelo Bend, criminal loser, decided he needed a new angle if he was to succeed. Thus, was born the terrifying threat of the Angle Man.

“His meticulously planned crimes always had a unique angle to them, a gimmick, an angle that took them out of the ordinary and made them something special.

He was curb-stomped by Wonder Woman so Angelo designed a sophisticated costume and the Angler weapon, “a triangular device which opens spatial portals” allowing him to warp his way through space and create force fields.

Still curb-stomped by Diana.

We’re only half-way through the first issue of Who’s Who and we’ve already met two of Diana’s D-List Villains.  Angle Man needs to move to Gotham – the obsession with gimmicks, the elaborate plans? – he’ll fit right in. He’ll still get stomped by Batman but he may be able to edge past the likes of Condiment King and Kite-Man (hell yeah) and make it to the C-list.
