Love and Redemption Review

Overall, I have to say that the story was really good, maybe even better than the popular xianxia romances that came before it like Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, Love and Destiny, and Ashes of Love. The romance may be comparable to AOL, but as a whole, the plot in L&R was more interesting and cohesive.

****SPOILERS AHEAD FOR LOVE AND REDEMPTION AND OTHER XIANXIA DRAMAS****

Plot

What sets Love and Redemption apart from the other 3 xianxia romances is that Love and Redemption also feels like a quest/adventure story, while also delivering a gut-wrenching, star-crossed romance plot. What’s interesting about L&R is that the main focus is on the mortal realm and the FL and ML’s current mortal incarnation, as opposed to the heavenly realm and their immortal identities.

The actions of the mortals have consequences across the 3 realms, as opposed to other xianxia romances that only use the mortal realm as a temporary stage for the leads to fall in love. The other 3 xianxias that I mentioned all opened up in the heavenly/celestial realm first, while the mortal realm was just a brief trial that the leads have to endure before returning to the immortal realm. The moral realm in L&R therefore feels livelier and more eventful, and the mortals have more agency and are not easily influenced by celestial beings. Whenever a celestial being does come down to the mortal realm, their powers are limited and are they are bound by the rules and restrictions of the mortal realm (which means that celestial beings can’t use their powers to mess with the emotions and decisions of mortals).

The drama opens up with a tournament being held at the FL’s sect and members from all the other sects are arriving for the tournament. When the FL and ML meet, they are on equal footing (well, equal in terms of status as disciples, but not so much in terms of magical prowess). It’s like when you were in high school and you meet the visiting basketball team from a rival school, and then end up becoming friends with them.

Love and Redemption also takes the audience through a mystery. What is the true immortal identity of the FL? What’s her relationship to the Star of Mosha? Is she the saviour or the doomsday harbinger? Does the ML have an immortal identity too? Why do they have the same birthday? The drama keeps us on our toes because we learn about the truth and the history of the characters as they’re discovering it, as opposed to the other xianxia dramas where there is very little mystery and few plot twists.

Because of this mystery, the drama is tight and well-paced, since a new piece of the puzzle is always being revealed. Just when you thought that the mystery is solved, there’s a twist, and you realized that the twist was set up from the very beginning of the story, but you just missed it.

The story also doesn’t stray from the main leads. Yes, there are subplots (as all dramas do), but the subplots here are brief, and they usually relate back to the main leads. Unlike in AOL where the later half of the drama derails and focuses on the two other supporting couples, while the main leads only get about 10 minutes of screen time.

The Male Lead - Yu Si Feng

Before starting the drama, I read a lot of comments about how much whump and emotional torture the ML goes through and how much he sacrifices for the FL. I thought this was an exaggeration. I mean, Xufeng in AOL went through a lot of Jin Mi too, (and you could make the same argument for Ye Hua in TMOPB, or Bai Zi Hua in Journey of Flower), so I was a little hesitant about the premise since it’s such an old trope, and I was doubtful that it could top the sacrifice that other MLs have done in other dramas.

But reader, boy was I wrong. Yu Si feng is the definition of limitless, unconditional love. I lost count of how many times he almost died for the FL (not including the 9 times she killed him in their previous 9 lives). He’s spitting up blood and stabbed in nearly every episode. Episodes 37-47 were the hardest to watch because of the escalating chronic angst and misunderstandings between him and Xuan ji that caused irreversible damage to their relationship. Even when she tries to kill him and tells him she regrets having ever known him, he still drags himself back to rescue her. To quote Si feng himself, it’s not a question of whether or not it’s worth it, but it’s a question of whether you are willing to do it. And Si feng is as eager and willing as ever to sacrifice everything for Xuan ji.

I mean, even Xufeng in AOL and Ye Hua in TMOPB snapped at the FL’s cruelty and aloofness at one point, but Si feng seems incapable of ever being angry with Xuan ji. Even when Si feng purposely tries to avoid her, it’s out of protection for her, not out of anger for everything she’s done. Like??? Si feng is impossibly perfect, even by the impossible standards of xianxia.

Cheng Yi plays Si feng to a T. He conveys a different type of pain in every crying scene, and so Si feng basically experiences like 59 different types of crushing pain, and you feel it in your bones every time you watch it. The man’s eyes speak volumes.

While it would be easy to say that Cheng Yi carries the drama with his portrayal of Si Feng, the actions of the ML would be meaningless if there were no romantic interest that he was doing this all for.

The Female Lead - Chu Xuan Ji

Some people may feel that Xuan ji isn’t worth Si feng’s devotion. But, I would argue that the first 37 episodes shows us that she is definitely worth it.

Xuan Ji is similar to Jin Mi from AOL in that she is incapable of feeling or understanding love. Because Xuan Ji was born without her 6 senses (and also without a real heart, unbeknownst to the other characters), she’s naive and juvenile. But despite not having feelings, she’s still able to care completely about others. She cares about her sister, her father, her sect brothers, and Si Feng. She’s fiercely protective of them as they are of her. To the best of her limited abilities, she is devoted to people as much as she can be.

Because of her sensory deprivation, Xuan Ji is really curious about the world. She wants to be like everyone else, to feel like everyone else, in hopes of being able to properly reciprocate people’s love for her. She envies people who are able to cry because she thinks that’s an unhindered way of showing love. She regrets not being able to cry when her mother died. Xuan Ji is therefore a self-aware character, unlike Jin Mi, because she knows her shortcomings. She wants to be able to feel, understand, and share pain.

As such, she’s quite an active character because she has this goal of reviving her senses, which has ripple effects for the other characters in the story since they become a part of her journey, whether by choice or by force.

Why Si Feng fell for Xuan Ji

Xuan Ji and Si Feng are very opposite characters, and not just because of the obvious difference in their personalities. Si Feng is a boy who feels too much (we later see that he gets his persistent sentimentality from his father), but was taught his whole life to suppress his emotions (I mean, the mask both literally and figuratively prevents him from emoting). Si Feng wants to express his feelings, but cannot.

On the other hand, Xuan Ji is allowed to be as expressive as she wants, but she is empty on the inside. Xuan Ji represents everything Si Feng wants to be and is expected to be: free and emotionless.

In this mortal incarnation, SF has responsibilities to everyone, from his spirit beast to his sect. Xuan Ji is the only one who doesn't ask or expect anything of him and yet, for someone who can't feel, she's always thinking of him. she stands up for him, she brings him snacks to comfort him when he’s being punished, she helps steal back his mother's hairpin. These are very simple gestures, but they mean the world to him (no one else has done these things for him before, and he doesn’t understand why she would unconditionally do these things for him), and that's why he's so quick to risk everything for her. Thus ironically, Si Feng actually learned about unconditional love from Xuan Ji.

He’s never known love, warmth, or friendship in his lonely years growing up in the Lize Palace. And so, when you’re just a 16 year old awkward, hormonal, and introverted teenage boy, it’s easy to fall for a selfless girl who invades your personal space and has no sense of propriety.

Why Xuan Ji fell for Si Feng

We see that her love is gradual. She falls in love with him without even realizing she’s fallen in love. She cares for him as a friend at first. After all, like she said, Si Feng is the first friend she’s made from outside her sect. But soon, her caring for him surpasses that of what she feels for her sect brothers. Si Feng teaches her about the world, from what different food tastes like, to naming colours. Si Feng doesn’t infantilize her like her sect brothers do. Her sect brothers are either dismissive or protective, like Ming yan, but she is able to find a proper confidant in Si Feng who is willing to be patient with her and listen to her.

Their 4-year separation when they each undergo training and achieve a boost in their abilities, only made Xuan Ji’s heart grow fonder. She misses Si Feng, and is frustrated to see that things are different between them when they meet again. She doesn’t understand why he’s so cold and distant, and all she wants to do is close the distance between them.

It’s a meme that Xuan Ji is the one who wears the pants in the relationship. She’s assertive and bold, and I think part of the reason why she fell for Si Feng is because he gives her that space to be best and biggest version of herself, whether in the heavenly realm or in the mortal realm. She’s also fascinated by him. A person outside of her sect who has an endearing personality unlike anyone else she’s seen. He piques her curiosity, and so she’s drawn to him. He’s as much as her romantic and sexual awakening as she is his.

It’s apt that their ship name is the combination of their last names “Chu Yu”, which sounds similar to the words 初遇, which means “first encounter”. Not only is this drama about capturing the feelings of first love, but Si Feng and Xuan Ji have also had 10 different first encounters because of their 10 reincarnation tribulations.

The Romance

It’s actually quite fun and endearing to watch because both Xuan Ji and Si Feng are playing hard to get, which frustrates the hell out of both of them. Xuan Ji is trying to win back Si Feng and convince him to stay, while Si Feng himself is trying to win Xuan Ji’s heart, and she doesn’t even realize it. They’re both trying to woo each other, but they’re both being resistant, intentionally and unintentionally.

I have to admit, though, that the first few episodes were slow.

There aren’t major sparks during the first meeting between the leads. She just falls out of the sky into his arms, and he’s flustered by her sudden appearance and clinginess. The love story didn’t feel “epic” during the the first 4 episodes because it didn’t feel like there were any stakes. These were just 2 young disciples from different sects who had a stereotypical meet-cute. It was like watching a high school coming-of-age romcom.

Things start to get serious when Si feng is forced to wear the lover’s curse mask, meaning that he cannot love, or else every time he’s hurt by the one he loves, that mask will release a feather to his heart and he’ll feel unbearable pain. When all the feathers are released, he’ll die. This means that he has to stay away from Xuan Ji, but obviously, the drama can’t let that happen, so he’s constantly thrown into situations with her, he can’t stay away from her, and he ends up falling for her harder and harder against his will.

Xuan Ji trusts Si Feng completely and unconditionally (until episodes 37-47 that is). She is willing to go against her father and sect in order to protect him. She’s willing to sacrifice herself to save him. She’s willing to go rogue with her powers for him. When no one else trusts him, she does.

This makes Xuan Ji a very cathartic character to watch because she isn’t frustrating at all. She isn’t easily influenced and has her own views. She doesn’t share the same prejudiced views as the elder sect leaders. She is willing to disobey if it’s the right thing to do. She immediately clears up misunderstandings, like the one between her and Ming yan. We see her gradually become more mature through her increasing protectiveness over Si Feng.

I think because we see this rational and loyal side of Xuan Ji, we’re able to have a higher tolerance for her ignorance and mistakes later in the drama (but only barely).

The Reincarnations - What Does it Mean to Love a Soul?

Si Feng fell for Xuan Ji 10 times in the mortal world, not including the very first time he falls for her when they were immortals in the heavenly realm.

I explained why I think Si Feng fell for Xuan Ji is this 10th reincarnation, but why did he fall for her in the past 9 lives? In the flashbacks, we see that in each life, Xuan Ji is cruel and heartless, and she still had the same unforgiving and ruthless demeanor as when she was the god of war. Is it because Si Feng’s soul is always going to be automatically attracted to Xuan Ji’s soul?

Because we only see brief glimpses of the past 9 lives (more specifically, we only see the ending of these lives), we don’t really know how they met or how Si Feng came to love her in each life. But, I would assume that there was something about Xuan Ji in each of her reincarnations that attracted her to Si Feng and completed him. Also, we know that Xuan Ji is capable of tenderness. As the god of war, she disliked fighting. As Mosha, she cared about Bailing. So, while Xuan Ji’s nature might be violent and cruel, I think that with each life, she learns about love and sincerity. If we assume that the flashbacks of the 9 lives are in order, then it would seem like Xuan Ji becomes more and more affected by Si Feng’s death with each successive lifetime. In the first life, she is completely indifferent to his beheading. but we see that she begins to become affected in the later lives, but tries to shove those emotions aside because they’re foreign and unfamiliar to her.

We get even less context for how Si Feng might have fallen for the god of war in the heavenly realm. We only know that Si Feng was the Jade Emperor’s son, and only gained a celestial anamorphic form after 10, 000 years. His true form is the Golden-feathered bird. He’s always appearing by the god of war’s side to listen to her vent, but the god of war only sees him as a stray bird who comes by to visit occasionally. Why did he fall for her? Did he empathize with her loneliness? Maybe she was his only friend, like he was her only friend, but she didn’t even realize it.

We also see that Si feng loves Xuan ji no matter who she is or what form she takes. Her gender doesn’t matter to him, and gender was never even an issue in the drama. The drama doesn’t give an explanation for why Bailing created a female body for the god of war (besides that he wanted to disguise Mosha’s appearance), but it also doesn’t matter. It’s a non-issue, and I love it. We just need to accept it, because the “why” isn’t important.

Xuan Ji has 3 different identities: The Star of Mosha (Luo Hou Ji Do), the god of war, and Xuan Ji the mortal. The god of war and Xuan Ji have the same “soul”, and that soul came from the glass of Mosha’s imprisonment lamp, and also from Mosha’s altered corporeal body. So, she is a part of Mosha, but has also become her own entity.

To Si Feng, all 3 identities are Xuan Ji. The memories, emotions, and experiences of all the identities are what made Xuan Ji Xuan Ji, and so he loves all of them.

But what made Xuan Ji finally crack so that she’s now able to love Si Feng in this 10th reincarnation? I think it has to do with her upbringing. We see in her previous 9 lives that she had a troubled upbringing filled with scheming and violence. So she was consumed by the darkest side of humanity and Si Feng couldn’t pull her out. But in this life, she grew up with an abundance of love, which made her want to learn how to love, which allowed her to open up to Si Feng. In this way, the drama shows that Si Feng alone isn’t enough to redeem her, but it took the love of her friends and family to help her grow a heart.

The Angst

Okay. So. Si Feng has probably suffered more than any male lead in xianxia history. I think someone said that he has a martyr complex. But, I’d like to break down the type of angst that are present in dramas.

There is angst that is harmless, and there is angst that is damaging to the relationship.

Harmless angst is usually angst by external forces. Like parents who don’t allow their kids to be together. Like in AOL when Xufeng mistakenly thinks that Jin Mi might be his sister so he can’t be with her. In L&R, this kind of external angst happens when Si Feng mistakenly thinks that Xuan Ji likes her 6th sect brother Ming yan. Xuan Ji isn’t purposely hurting Si Feng, but it’s an unintentional misunderstanding.

Damaging angst is when the couple turns against each other and become enemies. This happened when Jin Mi kills Xufeng and says she never loved him (which technically is true since her heart was re-sealed so she didn’t even understand what love was when she said it). In L&R, this happens Xuan Ji sides with her sect and attacks Si Feng when he reveals his demon form. This happens again when they confront each other outside the Lize Palace and she announces that she’s done with him and breaks ties with him. This happens again when she stabs him, says she regrets having ever known and loved him, and proceeds to try to stab him again. In Love and Redemption, Xuan Ji keeps saying hurtful things to him. There’s not just one moment of betrayal, but a constant onslaught of betrayals over 10 episodes that make the relationship feel like it’s entered a point of no return.

The masochistic side of me likes love/hate relationships and damaging angst. I grew up with it. TVB dramas have a lot of it. My favourite is the angst in Raymond Lam and Charmain Sheh dramas like Drive of Life and Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion. But despite over 20 years of watching dramas, I was still not prepared for the pain and suffering in Love and Redemption.

The good news is that they make up fairly quickly, though some may argue too quickly and easily.

What I Enjoyed

Other xianxia romances usually only have 1 mortal reincarnation. This has 10 reincarnations (even if only shown briefly), and I love that. The leads have already had such a rich history together, but they don’t remember, and so the romance is about them falling in love all over again in this life, while also slowly remembering the love they had in their previous lifetimes.

The world-building was also compelling, and the supporting characters were great. They were the voice of reason and talked sense into the main leads to help move the plot forward. I also liked how the ML and FL each had their own personal relationship with the supporting characters separate from each other. For instance, Ming yan has a childhood friendship with Xuan Ji, but he also develops his own friendship with Si Feng. Wu Ziqi was once Mosha’s helper, and also knew the god of war, but also forms his own friendship with Si Feng. Zi Hu is also friends with both Xuan Ji and Si Feng. Having separate friendships with the leads means that the supporting characters are unbiased. They’re not likely to help the ML more than the FL or vice versa, but they’re able to see both sides of things. They help the leads, but they’re also critical of them, and is therefore able to help the leads make rational decisions. It reminds me of the friendship dynamics in Avatar where the characters have unique relationships with each other. Like Toph has her own relationship dynamic with Sokka and Katara, which is different from Aang’s relationship dynamic with them.

It goes without saying that Si Feng is the best part of the drama. He plays an emotionally repressed character, so it always feels like the heavens opened up when he smiles, and Xuan Ji seems to be the only one who can make him smile. SF's best moments are when he shows moments of vulnerability, like when he begs Xuan Ji not to cut ties with him, or when he's so happy to the point of disbelief and he's afraid of it being true that he begins to slightly quiver, like when he kept asking XJ if she was really the one who took off his mask. You can see him break down and not being able to contain his emotions and how much he’s desperately yearning for his love to be reciprocated.

I like that the FL has the same personality throughout the drama. I'm always annoyed when the FL's personality takes a 360-degree turn when she has a sudden "awakening" when her past life memories come flooding back and she instantly matures and becomes jaded. In Love and Redemption, Xuan Ji stays her bubbly self, even when she’s burdened with responsibilities. Hell, even when she becomes a mother, she’s still aloof and playful. In episode 52 or so when she burns her leg and refuses to leave Si Feng’s house, she acts like a helpless little girl again. Si Feng tells her that such a small injury wouldn’t even faze someone as powerful as she is, but she reminds him that he once told her that even if she didn’t feel pain, her body would know the pain, and so she should always tell him when she’s hurt. I just like this throwback to the earlier episodes to show that while Xuan Ji has grown and matured, she’s still the same person who wants to be loved and pampered.

Weaknesses of the Drama

Xuan Ji is a really multi-faceted and complex character (because of her villainous tendencies), but Crystal Yuan doesn’t completely deliver in all of her performances of the character. Crystal Yuan is great when she’s acting cute (though it reminds me a lot of Zhao Liying’s acting in Journey of Flower, even the voice actress is the same actress), but I feel like Crystal Yuan’s crying scenes are a little lacking. Also, Xuan Ji is a character who is often in moral and emotional conflict because she starts to feel emotions that she doesn’t understand since she’s never felt them before, but sometimes Crystal isn’t very convincing when trying to convey this internal conflict. For instance, in the scene when she thought Si Feng was getting married to Ah Lan, I thought that her devastation at seeing that should have been a bit more palpable. I mean, you finally found the love of your life after searching him for over a year and now he’s in front of you, about to get married to another woman. There should be more pain, anger, regret, disbelief, a battle of emotions unfolding on the face. There should have been more deflation, more staggering. I think back to when Tang Yan was watching Luo Jin get married to someone else in Princess Weiyoung, or when Jin Mi was watching Xufeng propose to Sui He in AOL, and the desperation and shock was subtle, but still so strong. You could feel the drop in your own stomach when sympathizing with the female character.

I also obviously disliked how Xuan Ji didn’t believe Si Feng. But I would have understood why she didn’t believe him (even when he logically explained his innocence) since there are so many people pressuring her judgment, but what I can’t get over is how she had it in herself to physically hurt him. And she already hurt him before too, so she knows how much it pains her to hurt him. She already regretted the act before. But because she mistakenly thinks that he killed Hao Chen, she decides that she needs to kill him? Does Hao Chen mean that much to you that you’d be willing to sacrifice Si Feng in order to avenge him? That was my breaking point for her character.

I didn’t like how Hao Chen’s arc was resolved. For 1000 years, he thought he was right and never had any regrets. He was obsessed with controlling his friend Mosha to the point of killing him and sealing his soul away. He then created another being, became possessive over that being to the point of falling in love with it (without admitting it), and then follows his creation down to the mortal world, and wrecks havoc on the mortals, especially Si Feng. And when Hao Chen learns that he can no longer control or redeem Xuan Ji, he decides that he needs to kill her in order to prevent Mosha from coming back. But then suddenly, because of a few words and visions from the Jade Emperor, he immediately has a change of heart and sees the error of his ways. It’s just so anti-climactic. Yuan Long’s ending was also underwhelming. I just wanted the good guys and bad guys to fight it out without divine intervention.

While I sympathize with Si Feng and agree that it's like watching a puppy get kicked over and over again, he honestly gets jealous way too easily and is too insecure. He also keeps everything to himself and sucks at communicating. We blame Xuan Ji for being too quick at jumping to conclusions, but Si Feng also jumps to conclusions too and causes unnecessary pain for himself.

Overall Impression

Overall, despite the frustrations, I really liked the consistency of the drama. It flows as one complete narrative and all the subplots are well intertwined with the main plot. With other reincarnation xianxia dramas, you could divide the story into distinct arcs, but it’s harder to do with this one since you have arcs that overlap and transcend other arcs. There’s the mask arc, the god of war arc, the reincarnation arc, the demon identity arc, the Mosha arc, etc. Before one arc is completed, another arc is introduced.

If you’re looking for a be-all-end-all, til the end of time and end of the world romance, this is it. While it has many similar tropes to other xianxias like AOL, I think this executes the tropes better. Although if you’ve already watched AOL or other xianxias, you might be more immune to the angst (even though this drama is angstier). But if you watch this drama first, I think it sets the bar pretty high for other xianxia dramas.

The chemistry and sexually tension is also through the roof (and the BTS will have you raising your eyebrows - are costars normally that flirty and touchy feely on set?)

So yes, this drama does live up to the hype. More meta posts to come because I’m still going through withdrawal.

It’s hilarious how we’re all assuming Sasha will be the one to get the STD. What if its Jungkook?

I think it’s because subconsciously, most of us might want her to be ‘punished’, or face some type of obvious repercussion for the break up and the many bad decisions she’s been making. Or maybe I’m wrong… and thinking too much.

Still haven’t read recent chapters. 😂 My self control should win me awards (lies). Foxy please update soon, I don’t know how much longer I can last 😭 😭 .

I just want all the angst to pass so I don’t end up disliking Sasha and unshipping them. The last chapter I read, I was actually hoping they never get back together or at least for the next five years. The toxicity was just too upsetting.

I don't think you're thinking too much; at least not if you compare it to how much I thought about everything I put into this story! And I mean I have literally gotten multiple comments from people (serious or joking, they both kind of prove the same point...) who said Sasha deserves to get an STD.

You have really good insights when you send in comments so I'm going to hope this is ok in a response to you and elaborate a little more on a topic I get really excited analyzing and see at play right now with Flux...

Without referencing anyone's comments specifically, I'm just talking general trends, it's probably unsurprising to know that in my 11 stories over the last year and change, I have seen that BTS men can get away with WAY MORE "misbehavior" than the female OCs before I see escalated reader outcry. JK's non-con sexual acts in Lowlander didn't get the reaction that Isabella interrupting her own orgasm in Amended did. Obviously these incidents have context that also impact how we react to them, sure. And there's obviously a starting bias we have towards even fictional JK based on our love for real JK because we know I'm writing him with a good heart in my stories whereas you're meeting the OCs fresh, so this isn't a perfect comparison. But I do think it's hard to completely divorce the common sexist ideas the world has about female behavior and identity from the way we react to fictional female characters. I know I'm not perfect about it; a desire to look more closely at ways in which my own thoughts still reflect some of the very sexist ideas I was raised with was literally the starting of Amended! (And, arguably, I could write an analysis about how it still reveals internalized mysogyny through the narrative choices I made... 😬)

In general we tend to hold female characters to a higher bar of behavior and expect them to "know better" than male counterparts. This often holds even in a case like Flux where we know JK was raised by good parents and has seen good relationships modeled through them and his hyungs, and we also know Sasha does not seem to have had any good relationships modeled or have any specific family we know of who could have taught her anything healthy. I think she even said at one point (unless this is a spoiler? if so oops haha) that she's never seen a long, loving relationship. She's never had a relationship endure her having a mental health crisis. Her only long, healthy relationships are with three platonic friends, no romance or sex involved. Her family is three friends she met as a teenager who are similar to her in terms of age/experience/knowledge. But we expect her to model behavior she's never seen while giving JK more space to learn and grow through mistakes. I'm simplifying here because there are so many more details that can be brought in to understand this whole picture, some of which you all don't have yet, but I hope you get the gist of what I mean. Female OCs have to prove they deserve our beloved JK, but JK tends to get the benefit of the doubt unless I really swing him hard (Meadow and Sugar Fairy the reactions did manage to flip! Is it kind of interesting those were my most "well-behaved" female OCs too? Lowlander was sort of middling, some readers really loved Mishka and some found her behavior really off-putting in ways that are very interesting to analyze, even stopped reading because of her.)

Not saying every critical response is completely gender biased, or unfounded/unjustified, or a result of mental health stigma (which I didn't even get into in here but definitely comes up with some of my stories), and obviously responses will be messy because I intentionally try to write messy characters in messy scenarios. I try not to push ideas here and instead let my works speak for themselves and spend more time listening to reader understanding and response than proselytizing mine. Even when I disagree with the response in a specific comment, it's still interesting and enlightening to see other viewpoints and opinions. My own opinions are of course baised by my own life experiences and studies and I love having that broadened; in a way my stories are, for me, a big long discussion about ethics, identity, and society. LOVE IT.

Ok I'm sorry, I got carried away. It's just so interesting to me to get to see how people respond to my characters and events and how that changes over time and analyze how to impact or direct those feelings as a writer. I wish I could just give a readers guide of questions because I'd be so interested to read the think about the answers (not leading questions, genuinely curious questions like "What do you consider Sasha's many bad decisions?" and "What do you see as the differences in morality between Sasha having sex with Seojoon and JK having sex with the women in the hotel in Japan?")

Three days ago, I decided to start watching one of the Chinese dramas that had been sitting on my Netflix to-watch list for as long as I use it: 'A Love So Beautiful'.

I was (am) really excited over the Korean version because the FL is So Joo Yeon, whom I love since I watched 'Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2' last year―she's adorable!

However, I knew that the Korean version was a remake, so I figured I should start with the Chinese one first. Besides, a few years ago one of my ex-friends told me I should watch it, and she has a pretty good taste in dramas... So, well―I succumbed. And, oh my! I'm so glad I did!

'A Love So Beautiful' is a coming of age drama, which depicts the lives of five friends as from the moment they meet in high school up to adulthood, and how they learn about love, friendship and life in general. It especially revolves around Chen Xiaoxi (Shen Yue, from 'Meteor Garden') and Jiang Chen (Hu Yi Tian, from 'Unrequited Love').

♡ PLOT & EPISODES:

It is a really light-hearted drama, and its plot is uncomplicated. It is ideal for when you are in the mood for something that doesn't have twists and turns, and/or whose plot doesn't require a great effort to follow. If you feel like watching a drama like that, then I really recommend you to start this one.

Although it's made up of 23 episodes (and one special episode), they are approximately 40-minutes long each. Therefore, I didn't feel that they were tiresome to watch. Also, as a person who gets distracted quite easily ―I have the attention span of a goldfish―, I must emphasise that I didnt pause it at all―except, maybe, to go and grab some snacks... And to post that screenshot with a reference to Argentina, lol.

♡ CHARACTERS:

Xiaoxi (FL): This character is a well-known one in dramaland―the typical female lead who is really (and when I say really, I mean extremely, blindly) in love with the male lead, no matter his actions or the words that leave his mouth.

I normally find this type of character annoying (yes, I'm looking at you, Nao). I find it painful to watch that she keeps resiliently following the male lead, even when he is continuously humilliating her. Of course, if you keep in mind that she is a teenager, then you may be able to understand the way she behaves―we were all a little bit like that during our younger years... Or, at least, I know I was. However, that's hard to remember when the story depicts her to be neither a teenager nor an adult, although she is supposed to be the former. By this I don't mean that teenagers can't go through situations that may force them to 'grow up' quickly, but stuff like 'living alone with my classmate' is not a normal situation for a teen (especially, with their parents consent ¿¿¿¿¿)―that's more adult-ish.

Anyways, back to Xiaoxi.

When I think about my younger self, I think she might ―in some points― relate to Xiaoxi. Why? That's simple―because she truly acts like a teenager. For her, the problems she faces are like the end of the world, and deals with them as (most) young people would.

Amongst those problems, love is obviously included. She's devoted to the love she feels, and doesn't waver. She's always true to her feelings and to her heart―sometimes, a little too much for my liking. However, her genuiness and stubborness are two of the traits I liked the most about her.

But Xiaoxi is not entirely naïve―not all the time, at least. She stood her ground in some parts of the story, as a teenager and, mostly, as an adult. I must admit that one kick was amazing―I was lying in bed and I literally had to sit up and scream 'APLICADÍSIMA' (an Argentinian slang that, in this context, could be translated as 'nicely done').

Jiang Chen (ML): Yet another typical character in dramas. He's one of those guys who barely speaks, looks serious 24/7 and, the most important thing, has feelings but is unable to show them most of the time.

I'm not going to deny that people like that do exist in real life (now that I think about it, I may be like that irl, lol), but the real problem is how they are portrayed in dramas. I mean, the fact that a person gathers all those characteristics within them does not equal to being an a*shole (again, I'm so looking at you, Uehara).

Jian Chen sometimes acts like an a*shole, I'm not going to deny that. He mostly acts like that out of jealousy, which doesn't make it right. However, he's continuously growing out of that behaviour (maybe not so much out of jealousy 🙃), and that's what I liked about this character. Even if his character doesn't entirely lose his true essence (being serious is not a bad trait per se, just to name something), it was refreshing to see that, when he's with her, he wouldn't act like he doesn't care about her at all.

Wu Bosong (SML): Oh, dear. He's the sweetest. For real.

I'm not the kind of person who usually falls for the second male lead (for example, in Heirs I was always team Kim Tan, although everyone loved Young Do and shipped Eun Sang with him). However, this time, I found myself falling for Bosong really, really hard.

His character is yet another cliché―the sweet boy who's always helping the FL and has to be content with watching her from the sidelines. However, his kind and tender nature slowly captured my heart.

*spoiler alert* It broke my soul that the story was unfair to him―he deserved way better. Not only romantically speaking―all the scenes where his grandma doesn't recognise him were so, so heartbreaking. I know life isn't fair, but it is a drama! Don't make the poor boy suffer that much 😭.

However, even though I loved this character a lot, I ―by no means― shipped him and Xiaoxi. He deserved someone who would give him their entire heart―and, let's face it, Xiaoxi would never grow out of her love for Jian Chen. *end of spoiler alert*

♡ FRIENDSHIP:

As far as I'm concerned, most people are only interested in the romantic side of dramas ―which is fine, of course―, but I'm adding this item because it was seriously one of the things I enjoyed the most about this drama.

The chemistry between the five of them is awesome. Sometimes, it's not just about how nicely the leads are to each other―I think that portraying a great friendship is equally important. After all, life is not just about romantic love―it's about all the other kinds of love, as well.

It was sweet that they not only grew up together, but also that they stayed friends even if they had other things going on in their lives. They were unconditional to each other, but that didn't just stayed in high school―it followed them to their adult lives. They still tried to find the time to meet, even if they were busy (*spoiler alert* Xiaoxi's fansigning! *end of spoiler alert*), and supported and had each other's back no matter what.

I liked how friendship was one of the main topics in the drama.

♡ SUMMARY:

If you're looking for a cute and light coming-of-age drama (and you don't mind a school drama―i.e., dealing with the fact that they are teenagers during most of it), then A Love So Beautiful is the one for you.

Also, if you haven't ever seen a Chinese drama (and you're up to a drama with the characteristics abovementioned), then I recommend you start with this one. It's not boring, chapters are relatively short (40-minutes-long episodes are considerably shorter than Korean drama's one-hour ones).

The acting was great (again, bear in mind that the characters are teenagers!), the chemistry between the leads was good, and, if you're like me, you'll enjoy the chemistry between the entire group (*spoiler alert* although Bosong and Jian Cheng are ready to throw hands at each other like 99% of the time *end of spoiler alert*).

If you have some time, I highly recommend you to watch it!

Hamefura Idol AU!

No one on tumblr really knows it but... I love idols, like idol animes and games are my childhood and has eaten away at my very soul. I like drawing and imagining idol aus for pretty much any show I get into, and sadly hamefura isn’t gonna be an exception to that :P

(i’ve yet to draw for my dumb au so have a placeholder image from an upcoming anthology by @/relaxmakoto)

Instead of being isekai-ed to a bootleg PS4 otome game, our monkey girl gets reincarnated into “Fortune Lover: Cinderella Idol!”, an idol-production rhythm game (help me i’m bad a choosing names).

(Long post, I’m basically gonna retell the entire game in an idol setting lol. I only wanted to draw for this au, but thinking about plot and gameplay was too fun so I wanted to share it)

The Game

The original game’s story follows Maria Campbell, the main character of the game who applied for a job in Sorcier Productions after seeing a wanted ad online. By some luck, she gets hired as a temp-producer for the famous male idol group “Fortuna”. After a few hours of gameplay involving producing the male idols (Gerald, Keith, Alan and Nicol) through the game’s tutorial (introducing various aspects of the gameplay like “Choosing your Idol”, “Getting Relationship Points”, “Rhythm Game Concert Mode”, “Idol Produce Mode”, “TV Drama Mode” etc), the game reveals the plot twist of the game: Not just the male idols, but you get to also idol-produce yourself!

By the outcome of various events, Maria ends up performing in the stead of another idol during a mini concert that she escorts the boys with, and immediately stole the hearts of the audience by her beauty and hidden talents! M.C. is actually the first idol in the “Self-Produced Idol” project, one that aims to determine and bring out the full talents of an idol by exposing them to all the in outs of the idol world. Maria ends up becoming quite known very quickly, being rumored as a “Cinderella” of the idol world (In sports, the term Cinderella is used to refer to situations in which competitors achieve far greater success than would reasonably have been expected, rather than the typical meaning of Cinderella which means “damsel”). This rumor leads her to the anti-hero rivals for Maria (who ends up joining you in the game as idols you can produce), the perfect idol Mary Hunt and the “rarely appears publicly despite her talents” Sophia Ascart.

They start out as rivals for the game but ends up becoming friends with you and becoming produce-able idols like the 4 boys. You can even form a trio unit with the girls if you have enough relationship points (when your trio unit “Amour” is unlocked, you get more events, songs and outfits for you and the two girls!). But the true antagonist of the game is Katarina Claes, a boastful and prideful newbie idol who joined a few months before Maria, who earned a fan base thanks to her confidence and mature style. She doesn’t have the best voiced or is very skilled at dancing, but her confidence and ideals draws people to love her for her unique character. Katarina lacks self-awareness though, and thinks that she is the jack of all trades when it comes to being an idol, thus leading her to have an unbelievable amount of self confidence when it comes to her popularity and skills. She despises Maria Campbell because of how much the articles praise her for her charm and adorable singing, as she thinks that Maria is nothing more than a wannabe that doesn’t know the harsh reality of the idol world (the irony of that is an important aspect of the game’s story, since Katarina is overly reliant on her producer Anne, and Maria is the one who works both as an idol and as a producer).

Maria doesn’t really play much into the “self-insert” protagonist, more like an involved protagonist like Izumi from A3 that plays an important role into the story. The player does get to choose Maria’s (and everyone else’s) songs, schedules, outfits etc. by the guise that you are Maria, working as both an idol and as a producer.

The game does have a “relationship points” system, which means you can actually date one of the boys form Fortuna (secretly). Even if you don’t intentionally date anyone, the game already does play the “you, the main character, are so important and they wouldn’t know what to do if you weren’t here” agenda that most games have, so the game already makes all the love interests seem interested with you regardless of whether you actively target Gerald, Keith, Alan or Nicol.

Katarina’s Bad End

(Rather than the life threatening doom flags of FL) In the game, Katarina Claes constantly sabotages Maria’s events and performances, creating the conflict in the “story mode” and the “events” of the game. Near the end of the game, the character who has the highest relationship points with Maria will reveal Katarina’s awful treatment of Maria in public, ruining Katarina’s reputation and causing her to lose public opinion and fans

Sabotaging fellow idols is actually quite common in idol stories, but the extent that Katarina goes for her bullying is terrible, which shocks the public because that side of the idol world had never been put into the forefront before. While Katarina does have an arrogant and prideful personality, learning that she, who didn’t have the cleanest reputation in the first place, has been harassing the darling of the idol world, meant that shows, programs, radios and events didn’t hire or invite Katarina anymore in fear of loss in sales or public outrage, leading to her eventual downfall.

The final event of the game, the Idol Queen Tournament, Katarina performs despite her ruined reputation, and was met with almost no response from the audience. Realizing that her life as an entertainer is ruined, she quits and vanishes from the public eye.

It is said in the epilogue that she moved into the country side, by a small farming field, shunned by her parents and the public for her embarrassing behavior, in order to repent and look back on her actions, much to her anger and disapproval.

The degree of Katarina appearances and story events differ depending on which male idol love interest Maria has the highest points in. Katarina is most active if you are closer to Gerald, as she is madly inlove with him and only became an idol to be by his side (as Gerald won as the “Idol King” of that year, and Katarina aimed to be his “queen”). Katarina is also frequently present in Keith’s events and interactions, as she makes fun of the both of you for being a disgrace as idols. She also appears on Alan and Nicole, but not as much.

“Fortuna” and “Amour”

Fortuna, the most popular male idol group during that time, and Amour the all-new girls idol unit, are the “produced” characters of the game

(i’m bad at thinking at idol group names so those are placeholders lol)

Gerald Stuart is a child actor known for being a perfectionist. Even as a child, he had a good face, pose, fashion sense, perfect memory, amazing acting talent and charisma to carry himself infront of a crowd. He became an idol in hopes of escaping the endless sea of acting offers he gets, and to just starve off a bit of his boredom and free time. He ends up becoming interest in their new producer Maria, due to her unique circumstance and how hard working and earnest she is. Idols are known for being prohibited from dating, but in the Gerald Ending Epilogue, he proudly announces Maria as the woman of his affections and deeply apologizes to all his rabid fans and supporters, and hopes to gain their support for his feelings for her. The two are crowned the “Prince and Princess” of the idol world for that decade.

Keith Claes is an adopted son of the Claes Household. He was bullied by his sister and mother, making him feel alone and isolated as a child. In his teens, he became a handsome playboy that easily caught the hearts of a female crowd, leading him to be scouted by someone in Sorcier Productions. He accepted, wanting to use the love of a huge fanbase to drown himself with praise and adoration and to fill the hole in his heart from years of trauma and loneliness.

Keith attempted to flirt with his new young producer, but gets constantly rejected due to the idea that idols can’t date (and bc Maria is just so busy), making him crave Maria’s attention even more. He ends up respecting her diligence, intelligence, beauty and honesty, making him slowly fall inlove with her. In the Keith Ending Epilogue, Keith confesses to Maria and wants to date her, but knows that he can’t just let go of the fans that he gained from his playboy persona, so instead he gives her a promise ring, telling Maria that when their whole “idol” thing is over with and pass them, he hopes to be able to date her (and even marry her) for real one day without a fanbase that might attempt to seperate them.

Alan Stuart is the twin brother of Gerald, who is often compared to his twin brother due to his lack of acting and entertainment skills. Alan does however, have a deep love for music. He might not be as good with instruments as his brother, but unlike Gerald, he truly loves composing and performing music and finds solace in the melodies that he can convey. Alan ends up becoming an idol due to his love for music, with the desire to one day use the connections he can make as an idol to become a full-time composer and song writer (as well as to generally learn how to sing bc he secretly likes that too). Alan also wanted to be an idol as a way to compete with his brother in an area that he is more knowledgeable on.

Throughout Alan’s encounters with Maria, he ends up rejecting Maria’s friendship and praises due to his inferiority with his brother. Through time, Maria’s constant praises of Alan’s music and singing ends up resonating with him, leading up to her telling him that he shouldn’t compare himself to his twin brother and there are only things that he is good at, like his music. Maybe a line like “Not even Gerald can recreate the melodies that you write and compose, Alan! These scores are very Alan-like, and there’s nothing I’d rather listen to; nothing that warms my heart more. This is something only you can do, as Alan and no one else” does him in.

In the Alan Ending Epilogue, he admits that his heart isn’t ready for a relationship yet, but declares that he wants to be with Maria forever and that from the moment Maria started to make an impact in his life, she had become the “Aria” of his music, and that he wants her to know that he will always write his music with his love for her in mind. He wants to be able to convey his love for her through song one day, and he hopes that she will continue to love him until he finds the right words to sing.

Mary Hunt is the daughter to a famous businessman and politician, who has connections to the Stuart Family. She met Alan by accident, during the dinner party in her house for his father’s birthday. Mary was hiding in her beloved garden, and had encountered Alan who had done the same, before she could retreat to her safe haven. She was in awe as she watched Alan play and sing a song in his small guitar, almost thinking that the song was for her. They ended up singing in a duet, with Alan complimenting her voice, saying that she should develop it. Mary instantly fell inlove with Alan, and had trained herself in the same musical arts that Alan loved, especially the voiced that he had complimented, in order to one day become worthy of performing by his side. She had originally assumed that Alan wanted to perform for an opera or musical, but when she found out that Alan wanted to become an idol, she auditioned to Sorcier Pro. as fast as she could.

In Alan’s ending, Mary was very heartbroken to know that she could not be the one to stay by her beloved Alan’s side, but silently thanked Maria for breaking Alan free from the inner turmoils that Mary knew was an impossible job for her. Despite her feelings, she still wanted to sing by Maria’s side and congratulates the two with all of her heart.

Nicol Ascart is the son to the esteemed Ascart Family, owner of the Ascart Inc., one of the major sponsors for Sorcier Productions. Nicol has been a child model and was popular since childhood because of his beautiful face. He doesn’t talk much, so when someone has filmed him singing to himself in the hallways in highschool, it immediately went viral, causing various scouts to offer him a role as an idol. Nicol had only accepted his request due to the circumstances of his little sister, Sophia.

Sophia Ascart is born with unique features, leading to her being bullied and made fun of in public due to her stage appearance. Sophia has always loved idols, being envious of their ability to enchant a crowd and sing songs about their feelings out loud. She had a sweet voice and an adorable face, but her hair and eyes caused people to think of her as a freak. She wanted to become one, but knew it would impossible for her. Nicol decided to use his popularity to jump-start Sophia’s possible idol career, by trying to brainwash/persuade his fans to also love Sophia (when she first joined and started as an idol). It didn’t work on everyone, but he was determined to help his sister.

When Maria befriends and even starts a unit with Sophia, Nicol eventually fell for the woman who made both his and Sophia’s wish come true. There’s also the fact that as their producer, Maria became a true friend of Nicol’s, one that didn’t look at him with obsessive desire and only wanted nothing more than to be a friend and an ally.

In the Nicol Ending Epilogue, he quits being an idol due to his desire to eventually join his father in the family business, much to the disappointment of his fans, but promises to always watch Maria from the side lines. He would always send bouquets almost everyday, with small cards giving the declarations of love that he normally wouldn’t be able to vocalize. He thanks her for supporting both him and his little sister, and promises to jump to her side once she is done being an idol.

Bakarina

As usual, Katarina ends up remembering her future as an 8 year old kid, and plans to prepare for her future “banishment” and humiliation. She learns to farm in order to provide for herself once she gets shunned and retreats to the countryside, and (unknowingly) meets all the characters in the game and gains their good favor before the events of the game begins

I’ll write the rest of the plot involving reincarnated!Katarina next time lol :P

This au is obviously heavily influenced by a lot of the Idolmaster console and mobile games, Ensemble Stars, A3, Vocaloid Project Diva games, Aikatsu etc lol. Hamefura is still a small fandom so idk if i’d write for this au, but it’s a good enough excuse to draw the girls in cute idol clothes so i’ll take it XD)

Congratulations to both of you on the wonderful work<3 I came across a not so nice news that Saath Nibhaana Saathiya is back with season 2. I am amazed how such shows run for years and make a comeback. My ask for you is some of the worst shows or ridiculous things you have seen in ITV and how IPK was pathbreaking and how it stuck to some of these stereotypical tracks. Ah, you bet I have a BILLION things to crib about the current state of Indian television. So I’ll just stick to what is the WORST things on TV and how IPK worked with those tropes. Btw, I’m just addressing some of the MOST problematic things in TV.

Tropes IPK subverted

Trope: Post Hate Marriage

- Shows like Yeh Hai Chaahatein, Naagin 5 highlighted that since marriage ‘happened’ a man has rights on a woman aka patnidharm *puke break* which results to threats of marital rape and/or sexual harassment but that’s termed as “passion”.

But BECUZ it iz a Hindi TV show lead, he doesn’t “do it” *puke break again*

Quick note: There’s a WORLD of a difference saying “welcome to hell” in an office, and in a bedroom.

- IPK: One thing I genuinely respected about this show is that Arnav never implies any sort of sexual harassment (btw this is bare necessity, doesn’t make him a great or even a good guy) towards Khushi cause she’s his wife hence patnidharm. Sex, intimacy, all of it remain as a very meaningful act for both of them. If at ANY point Arnav was like “Khushi you are mine, fulfill patni dharm” bullshit, I would have exited the show ASAP.

Trope: Angst leads to Passion, aka forcibly being close to a woman when she DOES NOT want it

- Angst is different from passion, which is different from discomfort. From Naagin 5 to even some scenes in IPK 3, I cannot fathom why people find harassment sexy, angsty or passionate. I just watched a scene in Naagin 5 where the ML (male lead) dances ‘passionately’ with the FL (female lead), calls her a sweetheart and she is VISIBLY uncomfortable but because it is cued with Dil Ibaadat’s background scoring and sudden stares it is supposed to be... sexy?

- Also, my issues with IPK 3 was never the lack of Sanaya or anything. It’s just that the bg scorer plays Rabba Ve RIGHT AFTER Advay tells Chandni she looks prettier without her dupatta (Advay set her dupatta on fire, she doesn’t know it, drops it off, and she faints into his arms). He’s an anti-hero. Please... don’t play Rabba Ve when he’s being an anti hero. Ugh

- IPK: Apart from the dori break, weird hut consummation attempt, “main batata hoon characterless...”, and the stupid we-ain’t-married-so-let’s-bang-even-if-one-partner-is-uncomfortable; Arnav and Khushi DO NOT engage in any sort of physical contact that is undesirable. The dance on honeymoon, Arnav and Khushi lock their eyes and dance on tandem, at no point is Khushi attempting to run away from Arnav or Arnav continuing to feel up Khushi despite learning she’s uncomfortable.

Trope: Women against women

- *takes a deep breath* Kasautii Zindagi Ki (1 and 2), IPK 3, Qubool Hai, Kumkum Bhagya, Yeh Rishtey Hai Pyaar Ke (mostly), Anupamaa, Yeh Hai Chaahatein, Lockdown Ki Lovestory, Saath Nibhana Saathiya - you get it? Literally all of them have women who also desire the ML or don’t want the FL to be the Bahu of the house. Also like I literally put mostly Star Plus shows. @tellywoodtrash is legit your go to person about more info. Her legendary liveblogs are a living insight.

- IPK: (Not considering Sheetal cause that was barely a track and Dadi was brought by Shyam) I LOVED that Shyam was brought into the show. It was one of the few shows that allowed a villain to grow. Shyam had plans, motivations, and was actually quite the villain until he started monologuing his every plan. And apart from the ‘makeover’ given to Lavanya, I LOVED how Lavanya grew as a character was respected and that she got a dignified breakup.

Tropes IPK followed

- Darcy & Lizzy - rich arrogant man meets peasant intelligent woman

- Orphaned leads.

- Siblings are the beta pair.

- Misunderstanding before/around love confession.

- Hate marriage.

- Remarriage track.

- Enemies to lovers / takraar se pyaar.

How good is Love Scenery? I saw your post of the poster but that's it I heard there is a second male lead who is so much older and likes the FL which makes me dreading the drama because I hate love triangles I hope someone who has read the novel can say if she only likes the ML and the otp stays together no matter what happens I love power couples.

hiii! at this point there’s 10 eps out and from what I can gather from all the teasers and what I’ve watched so far...the female lead definitely doesn’t like the second lead like that. in fact, she’s uncomfortable at the thought of it when she suspects he views her as more than a friend. I don’t think they’ll play it out as frustrating love triangle, more as a cute way to get the ml jealous. (of course there will probably be at least one misunderstanding but that’s just dramas for you) the two leads very much have tunnel vision for each other at the moment. I hate love triangles too and if there’s a manipulative second ml or fl it always drives me insane, but so far I’m not seeing that. overall so far it’s really cute! despite them not even having met each other in person officially yet. I think it’ll start to pick up now, since they’re about to realize each other’s true identities soon and we’ll get lots of cute interactions between them. based off all the trailers and teasers I’m seeing 80% just them being happy and cute and maybe 20% angst (we know how cdramas like to spoil everything in their trailers/intros/outros lmao). I wouldn’t say it’s a very complex drama, but if you’re looking for something fluffy and cute I say go for it! plus it’s friends to lovers trope, which is always being overshadowed by enemies to lovers in my opinion

A short rant/ review: Princess Wars

Brief synopsis: FL was transmigrated to another world after dying due to overwork. She could return to her own world and get a huge amount of money if she succeed in Princess Wars, a competition between princesses, and married the crowned prince.

One of the things I don't like about this manhua is how the clever female characters (aka the princesses) have to compete against each other just to win the favor of the one and only prince. I know all of them are participating in the competition for their own benefit, but it's disappointing seeing them hurt each other physically just to win. I'm sure if the circumstances are different, it's possible for them to become friends.

Another thing that frustrates me is how the prince could easily throw the princesses away once they disappoint him. One instance is when Charlotte (Little Mermaid) was framed to be having an affair. The princesses needed to swear loyalty only to the prince while they are part of his princess candidates so when she was found unconscious beside another noble guy, instead of calling it as sexual assault, the prince immediately concluded she was cheating on him and shamed her in front of everyone. When it was revealed that she was, indeed, framed, his attitude towards her changed back to how it was before the incident and started caring for her again.

Also, the most disappointing thing about this manhua is the choice of male lead. That two-faced jerk of a prince would flirt with every princess candidate, and he would praise and flatter them every chance he gets, even though deep inside he thinks little of all of them and are only using them to get favor from the king and the people. The fl (Juana, Princess Pea) is already appointed as his guard and not part of his princess candidates but he treats her as if she belongs to him, prohibiting her from being close to other guys and telling her to be loyal to him. He also has no regard for the people around him and would order anyone to be killed regardless whether or not they are innocent (it seems like he is queen of hearts' genderbend version lol).

So why am I still reading this despite all these? Because of the female lead, Juana. Her growth is evident throughout the series and although she has no special talent like the other princesses, her cleverness, tact and straightforward personality makes her stand out. I want to see if she will be able to succeed with her plans of making the prince fall in love with her despite not being a princess candidate (and I want to witness the defeated look on the prince once he realizes that Juana doesn't really like him and how she only did all that just to win the game). Also, I want to find out why, among all the other princesses, she is the only one without a family and a kingdom in that world because it seems like it would be one of the major plot points. And I hope her endgame would be the caring and thoughtful gardener, Ima. Juana deserves a guy like him who genuinely likes her for who she is and would stand with her no matter what happens.

Appearance: Aisha is one of the taller members of the party standing at 5’10” at her full height. She has bright blue eyes the color of the ocean, something that often comes with being a water magi. Her skin is incredibly dark, as is typical for people of Andros. Aisha naturally has ears that appear to be webbed like fins due to her having some mermaid blood. She has significant muscles, making her the most defined out of the girls. Aisha’s arms are particularly muscular, showing how much she has worked to refine her body. She also has impressive abs she doesn’t hesitate to show off. Her hair is long and immensely curly, reaching just below her hips. Her hair is a deep brown color with highlights of red here and there, another show of her Andros heritage. Aisha often wears cropped shirts to show off her muscular figure with shorts, finding them to be easiest to move around in. She prefers to wear tight clothing when not in a cropped shirt and shorts to keep from having any flowy materials to tamper with her maneuverability. Even so, Aisha hates wearing too many layers of tight material, as it reminds her of her past issues with repression.

Personality: Aisha is naturally am ambivert, not being great with talking to others at first but opening up to them more as time goes on. She struggles with making friends since she spent most of her childhood hiding away from people at the request of her parents. Aisha was forced to spend her time alone growing up, and she longed for new friendship despite not having the means to make new connections. She’s not the best at talking to new people, feeling like they have better things to do than worry about her, but she slowly unfolds and starts talking to them. Aisha is shy at first, hiding herself away and refusing to say much until they show a genuine wish to be around her. She fears being left alone and wants to make sure that the person she is with actually means it when they say they want to make a connection with her. Aisha hates being without others even if she pushes them away at first, which she does as a way of protecting herself from being hurt. After she starts to feel more comfortable, she shows how she feels more often, being a bit more cheerful and determined. This side only comes out when she feels fully secure though, meaning not many people have witnessed this side of her. Loss frightens Aisha more than anything else, and she can fall to pieces when she feels that somebody she cares for is threatened, making her break down and go back into old self-destructive habits since she doesn’t know how else to respond. Aisha has horrible trust issues as well and rarely opens up to others. It takes a long time of serious connection for her to be willing to talk to her friends about problems that plague her, as she fears her issues being used against her, as she hates thinking that she could be betrayed. However, once she feels confident in her friends, Aisha gladly shows a side with confidence and determination, never letting herself be swayed. It takes a while to see this side of her due to her hesitant nature when it comes to trusting others.

Background: Aisha was born as the single daughter to the king and queen of the Andros kingdom above the sea. As is tradition on Andros, Aisha was taught how to be the perfect princess from a young age, never being allowed to leave the palace. She was taught by personalized tutors on how to be the optimal lady of the court for when she eventually took over the kingdom. Such was ordered by her father, who wanted Aisha to be the best possible ruler of Andros. She was arranged in a marriage from a young age she never asked for to a noble named Nabu. Nabu and Aisha were friends from a young age, but while they loved each other in a platonic sense, they had no urge to marry one another. Nabu was going through a similar situation to Aisha, and the two supported each other every step of the way. Nabu was the one who encouraged Aisha to start sneaking out of the palace in the first place. Aisha followed his advice and snuck away for the first time when she was eleven. She wandered around the castle town under the name of ‘Layla’, where she met a young girl named Anne who was her age. ‘Layla’ and Anne bonded and became the closest of friends. Anne was running away from a tragedy she didn’t want to explain, merely claiming she wanted a place and a way to be free. Anne taught Aisha how to dance, saying it was the perfect way to express herself. Aisha followed Anne’s advice and found that she had a passion for performing. Aisha and Anne remained close for the next few years until they were both fourteen. Around this point, Aisha realized that she had fallen in love with Anne, and she decided she was going to confess her feelings to her friend. When Aisha arrived at her and Anne’s regular meeting spot, she didn’t see Anne there. Aisha started to wander around as the hours passed by, wondering where her friend could have gone. She ran into an older woman in the town who told Aisha that Anne had passed away in a horrible incident, having been killed by her mother, who had turned out to be abusive. Aisha grieved horribly for her friend, realizing that this was the horrible thing Anne had been running from when they snuck out to dance together. Aisha snuck out to attend Anne’s funeral a few days later, and Anne’s younger brother gave Aisha a note, realizing she had to be the ‘Layla’ Anne had loved so much leading up to her death. The note told Aisha to find the life she had always longed for and that Anne loved her. Anne’s brother told her that the note had been found in his sister’s bed and had been there for a while. Aisha realized that Anne had been trying to confess her love for a while as well but didn’t know how to do so, and she was overcome with grief. After the funeral, Aisha returned to the palace in a state of numbness over the loss. Nabu was the one person who was able to get through to her, and he told her to follow her heart and Anne’s advice. It was time for Aisha to carve a new life for herself of her own wishes and not her parents’. Aisha wiped away her tears and prepared to leave, bidding Nabu farewell. He told her that one day, he would follow her, and if she ever heard of a man by the name of Ophir, he was ready and waiting for her so they could reunite. With that, Aisha waved to Nabu and left the palace behind. She found the Pixie Village, which had been teleporting around to ensure none found its true location, and the pixies took her in after realizing she had a pure heart and needed their assistance. Aisha was the only person who had free access to Pixie Village for many years, and she moved where the village moved. When the pixies were kidnapped after Darkar awakened again, Aisha set out to rescue them. They were the only friends she had now that Anne was dead and Nabu hadn’t yet run away and to repay the kindness she had been given.

Other: Aisha’s father and uncle are twins. Previously, Andros was ruled by one royal family, that being the one above water. However, when the twins were born, territory was divided between Teredor and Neptune, who happened to be one human and one mermaid. In truth, both have half-human and half-mermaid blood, but it manifested itself in different ways for them both. Due to this mermaid blood, Aisha can breathe underwater and has an increased skill with swimming. She knows all about royal practices as well after years of being trained to be the perfect princess, but she does her best to eliminate these habits as a way of rebelling against the way she was raised and expressing herself in a different way.

Position in Team:

Aisha is the shaper of the group. She relishes in challenges and tackles anything difficult that comes her way head-on, never giving up. When others lose hope or struggle to press on, she finds a way to motivate them and urge them into looking on the hopeful side. Sometimes, her pressing on seems like blind optimism, but her words of encouragement keep the group from falling apart at the seams when times get rough, making her vital to the team’s central dynamic.

Dynamics:

Bloom: Aisha and Bloom have a friendly competitive relationship. They're both fans of sports (though Aisha is much more intense in her adoration), and they spend time playing around together every once in a while. Both girls have struggled with loneliness in the past as well and are finally settling into a secure routine now that they have a full group of friends. Due to their mutual understanding of loneliness, they get along well and are able to comfort each other through bad times.

Stella: Stella and Aisha have a surprisingly strong friendship. After suppressing their interests for years to fit into a mold proposed by others, the two are both letting loose at last. Stella and Aisha enjoy playing tennis together in their free time and use it to get rid of pent-up feelings. The two share an interest in dance as well and enjoy dramatically showing off their skills on the dance floor, especially where paired dances are concerned. When with each other, Stella and Aisha are shamelessly free.

Flora: Aisha and Flora are slowly working through their issues of self-worth together even if they're opposites. Flora is calm and a natural pacifist while Aisha is bold and rebellious, but they still mesh perfectly. They are helping each other past their previous problems by encouraging the other to make a new life outside of their inferiority issues and predetermined paths. Aisha is helping Flora out of her shell while Flora aids Aisha through her repressed past.

Musa: After Aisha arrived at Alfea, Musa was the first one to reach out to her. They hit it off nearly immediately, confiding in one another once they got to know each other well enough. Musa helped Aisha find her place as part of the group, and Aisha helped Musa to show how she felt to the world in return. The two have a lovely performing dynamic as well with Musa writing and performing music while Aisha dances to them when they take to the stage side by side.

Tecna: It took Aisha a while to open up to Tecna after she joined the group since they were both the types to stay away from most other people. However, as Aisha found her place as part of the group dynamic, Tecna did her best to reach out to her. They can bond over their issues with their fathers and tend to rant to each other once in a while. Aisha also asks Tecna for help researching ‘Ophir’ every once in a while, praying that one day she’ll get an answer saying Nabu was free.

Roxy: When Roxy first appeared, Aisha was friendly to her, wanting her to feel welcome in the group since she had felt so hesitant and isolated at first. Aisha helped Roxy find her home as part of the Winx group, for which Roxy was immensely thankful. After Roxy’s true heritage came out, Aisha did all she could to help reassure Roxy that she was on the right path despite what others might say, keeping Roxy grounded when the world seemed to be against her, something she remembers fondly years later.

Diaspro: Aisha and Diaspro were easily able to bond due to a common background when they first met. Since they were set up to marry friends from a young age despite not wanting to, they can sympathize with another easily. Diaspro is the first one to get Aisha to open up about her past since she understands the pain Aisha is going through. Even after their arranged marriages are called off, Aisha and Diaspro remain close and spend time together talking about what they will do with their lives now that marriage is off the table.

Sky: Sky and Aisha are able to understand one another just as Diaspro and Aisha can. They talk a lot more than one would expect at a first glance. Aisha helps Sky to get out of his shell to reclaim his life when Sky is unsure of what to do. Aisha doesn’t want him to fall into the same trap of feeling powerless that she once had, and she is ultimately successful in helping Sky find another way of living his life that isn’t solely for other people. Aisha brings out Sky’s rebellious side as well.

Brandon: Brandon’s casual nature helped Aisha to feel welcome as part of the group from the start, as he was happy to reach out to her kindly from the moment she was recruited to join the Winx. Aisha appreciated such greatly, as she wasn’t sure how to approach the boys that hung out with her new companions. Brandon was the primary one to help her find friendship with the other boys, something Aisha remains thankful for even years after the fact. They still talk years later.

Riven: Out of all the boys, Riven is easily the one Aisha gets along with least. He tends to be a bit too snippy for her liking, which can make her highly uncomfortable when he gets sarcastic. However, as time goes on and Riven gets better, Aisha grows to appreciate him more. Even so, she is wary of him when he gets snarky, not wanting to get on his bad side. She tends to keep him at arm’s length, struggling to get over how he was when they first met, but she never shows her hate openly.

Timmy: Timmy was one of the harder boys for Aisha to approach. She could tell he was an introvert and didn’t know how to reach out to him given that she was much the same. Even if they didn’t talk much at first, they were able to bond after a while due to having a common friend group. At one point, Aisha asked Timmy to see if he could find more details regarding Anne’s untimely death, and he happily complied, helping her through her remaining grief over her deceased friend.

Helia: Helia fascinated Aisha from the moment she joined the party, as she wasn’t sure of how to approach him but admired him at the same time. She loved how free he was with expressing himself, even if he was on the shy side. After a while, Aisha started to model her own free expression after Helia’s, and when he noticed, she was promptly embarrassed. However, Helia didn’t ever seem upset with such, instead encouraging her to follow her dreams and saying he would be her no matter what.

Nabu: Nabu and Aisha grew up as best friends and treated each other with immense respect. Both had dreams of making their own places in the world far from squabbles of royalty and nobility. Nabu was the one who encouraged Aisha to leave in the first place, declaring he would always support her and her dreams. When they reunited, both were overjoyed to see one another again, happy as could be to see that they were both free of the past issues that had plagued them.

Teredor: Teredor and Aisha were never particularly close when the latter was young. He was very oriented in tradition, wanting her to follow up on his rule as a potent queen. However, he tended to be ignorant of what she wanted, making Aisha fear he didn’t care. Deep down, Teredor does care for his daughter, and when he realizes the faults in the way he was raising her, he apologizes and allows her to carve her own future, believing that she knows best for herself.

Niobe: Niobe, while an intense figure in Aisha’s childhood, cares greatly for her daughter. She was never as rooted in tradition as her husband was, instead longing to focus on what Aisha wanted above all else. Niobe did clash with Teredor at times over what to do with their daughter’s childhood. After hearing from Aisha what she wanted to do with her life, Niobe placed her full support in her. Niobe and Aisha’s relationship has been changing for the better ever since.

Neptune: Neptune is just as strict and firm as Aisha’s father is, making the two brothers incredibly similar. Neptune cares greatly for Aisha and wants the best for her, but he tends to side with his brother on matters regarding how Aisha is raised. After Aisha runs away, Neptune softens up, realizing that perhaps the methods he discussed with Teredor were a bit extreme. Upon seeing what she is capable of, Neptune allows Aisha the freedom to live her own life.

Ligea: Ligea was perhaps the most supportive adult figure Aisha had growing up. She was free-spirited even if she preferred doing things a given way and encouraged Aisha to follow her heart. Aisha followed her advice and made her own path, something Ligea holds great pride in. Aisha at one point wanted to move in with Ligea and live among the mermaids, but Ligea instead told her to carve her own future, always putting her full faith in Aisha’s decision-making skills.

Nereus: Nereus and Aisha could relate to one another due to being the future heirs of the kingdoms of Andros. While they were both subjected to immense pressure growing up, Nereus had a habit of handling it better and did his best to help Aisha cope when she thought times were getting too rough. Nereus gives Aisha tips on what to do when she finally takes the throne as well, thinking the two can both learn from one another and their individual experiences.

Tritannus: Tritannus was immensely jealous of Aisha when she was growing up. While Aisha wanted nothing more than to be free of the throne, Tritannus longed to be made heir of an Andros kingdom. Their relationship could get tense at times even if they loved each other since Tritannus was prone to getting snippy with Aisha when she got upset. Even if they always made up afterwards, Aisha never forgot the arguments they had, and they had a lasting impact on her.

Tressa: Aisha and Tressa grew up incredibly close since Tressa was one of the only people Aisha was allowed to see regularly. Tressa felt horrible about the way she was being raised since she felt like she was being ignored by her father in favor of her brothers. Aisha was always there to comfort her, telling Tressa to make her own life in spite of what Neptune demanded of her, and Tressa did so by becoming one of the most powerful mermaid warriors alive.

Anne: Anne was Aisha’s best friend when the latter was younger. Anne encouraged Aisha to follow her dreams despite what held her back, believing she would be best if she was free. Aisha grew to fall in love with Anne over time, hoping they could find a life together one day. However, when Anne died, this dream was stopped in its tracks. Aisha followed Anne’s advice after the latter passed away and claims years later that everything she does is because of what Anne told her.

Piff: Piff is the perfect Pixie to counteract Aisha’s ever-present anxiety. Piff is calm and sweet, always trying to keep Aisha happy despite their young age. Aisha and Piff bonded as soon as the latter was born (which was a few months after Aisha joined the Pixies), and Aisha has been caring for Piff ever since. Piff has the least trouble calming Aisha when she battles her loneliness due to her calming aura, and the two can often be seen together on Alfea’s campus.

Vonda Smith and Wrong Man

Vonda Smith's case, which was featured in episodes 1 and 2 of Wrong Man's second season on the Starz network, concluded with more questions than answers. Whether you believe Vonda is innocent or guilty (in any capacity), I think we can all agree that this case needs to be reopened and reinvestigated.

Johnny Lawrence, the "blood splatter expert" determined two things to be true of the blood stains found in Vonda's car: the blood was NOT planted and that the car was only used to transport Jessie, it was not the site of her beating or death. Me being me, I have some questions about this. When Johnny Lawrence performed the forensics on Vonda's car by spraying a chemical onto the passenger seat and surrounding area to reveal hidden blood stains, why was there no blood on the passenger seat's headrest or on the front, where a passenger's back would rest against? Jessie's most series injuries were inflicted to the back of her head... so where in the world was all that blood? Why would there be so many blood stains on the seat if Jessie was supposedly seated there? If she was seated in the passenger seat and bleeding, would her own body (buttocks and thighs) not have protected the seat, shielding it from blood? Additionally, Mr. Lawrence stated that the blood on the glove box was caused by expirated blood- blood that's been expelled from the nose or mouth (an air passage) with some force. Reviewing the autopsy report however, it doesn't appear that Jessie sustained a broken or bloody nose, any major injury to the mouth or any internal injury that might cause her to cough up blood... expirating it onto the glove box. I like to think two heads are better than one and I wish Wrong Man had gotten a second opinion on this.

Also... if the blood wasn't planted in the car and was already in there when Vonda drove her car to Sharon's house to pick Emma up, then Vonda, Sharon and Emma all lied about not seeing any blood in the seat... and I have a hard time believing they all lied.

Speaking of lying... what's up with the bomb Vonda dropped? Initially, Vonda claimed that she didn't see who returned her car, then she said it was Gary Ealey and then finally, she said it was her own son, William. So, which is the truth? More to the point, how can anyone possibly trust what she says after she was caught lying? What else has she lied about? Lying doesn't make you a murderer, but it does make you untrustworthy.

Whether it was Gary or William or someone else entirely who returned her car, it doesn't necessarily mean they killed Jessie, but one thing is certain, one person can not drive two vehicles at once, so whoever returned the car, was absolutely with (at least) a second person... the person driving the white van.

I had hoped Mr. Matthews, the defense witness who says he saw Jessie get into a white van, would have been asked about Vonda's car. If Jessie borrowed Vonda's car and drove it back to her place on Cross Anchor, then what happened to Vonda's car if Jessie left in a white van? Was her car left behind at Jessie's? Was it ever there at all? The white van must exist because Mr. Matthews saw it, Jessie's neighbor Edward Hitchens saw it, and then Vonda saw it thirty minutes later at her house. Are all three of them lying? How could three strangers have independent sitings of a white van if it didn't exist?

Who, in Jessie's life, owned a white van? JD Ealey's youngest son, Donavan was said to have owned a white van at the time and was close friends with Jessie and JD's friend Dudley Hudson also owned a white van. Oddly, when Wrong Man confronted Dudley's mother about his and JD's alibi and they learned that it was a lie, Ira Todd said that they simply couldn't find Dudley to question him and that JD was in federal prison and they just dropped it. But was JD ever really in federal prison? Back in October 2018, he was swept up in multi-agency drug bust with 21 other individuals, but JD never appeared for the hearing. To my knowledge, he's been roaming Greene County, free as a bird, with a warrant out for his arrest ever since. In fact, to my great surprise, I saw him with my own two eyes back in August 2019 at the Wal-Mart in Greeneville. So.... there's that. As far as Dudley Hudson goes, he's newly married and living in FL.

While we're on the topic of bad guys, we should include a person that Wrong Man surprisingly didn't mention, Lee Britton. Lee Britton lived on Jud Neal Loop for years and was friends with Dudley Hudson. A day or two following Jessie's murder, Lee (who did not know Jessie) allegedly made a cross and placed it at the memorial site. When a friend and neighbor brought up Jessie's death in conversation just days later, Lee made a very strange comment. He allegedly said that they (the police) know who did it, that it was the grandma (Vonda). Now, this is a weird comment for Lee to make to his neighbor for two reasons: one, how did Lee know that the police said that and two, why would the police tell anyone who they thought was a suspect?

Fast forward to December 2016, just four months after Jessie's death and Lee, out of the blue, acquired a white van, which he never drove after obtaining. I was told that the van just sat on Lee's property until it simply disappeared a few weeks later. Could it have been Dudley's van?

Many have wondered if Lee Britton could have been involved with Jessie's death because he savagely assaulted a female neighbor 11 months after what had happened to Jessie.

Perhaps we'll never know the absolute truth of this case or what truly happened to Jessie, but we can keep trying. We can continue to question everything and play detective and reach out to others who might be able to help. Any avenue we can take (or create) in an effort to reveal the truth and bring Jessie and her unborn baby justice, is well worth our time and energy.

As for Vonda... I tried. I've tried really, really hard to help her... but I don't like liars.

When I reached out to Joe Berlinger with Vonda's case and was working with his team at Radical Media, I felt like maybe we were saved... and that they'd come in and investigate, find the truth, solve the case and bam... justice for all. But, this case is terribly complex and messy and a resolution will not be easy to attain. Chapter three of my "Even the Best Laid Plans" fic.

Saturday, Summer 27, Year 6

Addie woke up the next morning pleasantly sore but uncomfortably alone. She remembered vaguely that last night, Arlo had settled in right next to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and sleeping soundly. She'd even fallen asleep with her head on his chest. There was no way that Arlo had gotten up witout her noticing. But the bed was empty. There was no sign that Arlo had even been by last night: his side of the bed was made, the clothes they had so carelessly tossed aside were gone, and even the rug had been straighened out.

A quick glance out the window revealed the sun to be high in the sky, judging by the color of the sky outside. Upon closer inspection, the clock on the wall read noon.

"Blast!" She cried as she threw herself out of bed, pulling on yesterday's clothes as fast as she could and sweeping her hair up into a loose ponytail. Higgins had for sure beaten her to the best commission that morning. Stupid, stupid, stupid! How could she have slept in?

Addie raced out of the house, forgoing her habitual mailbox and resource box check in her haste to get to the Commerce Guild. She blew right by Ack, who was trying to point out the composite wooden boards she'd forgotten to turn in for the last four days for a commision. She didn't notice Remington riding his horse through the Plaza, even though it wasn't his usual patrol. She didn't notice Antoine, Albert, and Sonya chatting outside of the Round Table. She didn't notice the odd glance Gust gave her as she pushed by him and QQ to get inside. She didn't notice when she hit Builder Wang with the door as he was coming out of the Commerce Guild. Everything Wang was holding previously cascaded down the steps of the Commerce Guild, the desk lamp Higgins had so carefully inspected earlier tumbling into the fountain. The door shut behind her before Addie could hear Wang very colorfully cursing her out.

She did, however, notice the inspection tables blocking her path to the commisions board. It took her a few flustered, frustrated seconds to realize it was Saturday, and there were no commissions on Saturdays. When it did finally register, and the adrenaline died down, she let out a deep sigh of relief. No commissions meant no fluctuation in rep points, plus it was the end of the month, after all, which meant her position as number one for the season was secured. Celebration was in order.

Addie cast a quick glance around the atrium for her usual Saturday companions. They weren't hard to spot. Presley, Polly, and Isaac were all seated on the couches opposite her, sharing worried glances and cups of tea.

Presley, even with the large streaks of white in his hair, had never looked better. The years had been quite kind to the elderly man. Isaac, opposite him, sat poised on the edge of his seat like always, posture absolutely perfect, despite the chair's innate ability to swallow a person whole. And then there was Polly, ever the sweetheart, with her hair down today instead of pulled out of her face with a pencil. Her fingers bore traces of the charcoal pencils she would use to stubs in the wee hours of the morning, working hard to complete the extra credit work Lucy had set for her. Addie smiled- the girl never stopped working. Well, at least not when there was tea involved.

Polly caught Addie's eye and beckoned her over, patting the spot next to her in offering. Addie moved to sit, taking the fragile tea cup Presley had extended to her. It was good tea, she thought as she downed the whole thing in one go, not even bothering to breathe or add her usual milk and honey. She extended the cup wordlessly, and Isaac filled it, but this time, Addie slowed down and enjoyed each sip.

"It's so good to see you, little one," Isaac broke the silence, using his endearing nickname for her. "It's been so long since we last played together in the park." Addie's cheeks reddened with embarrassment.

"And it's been weeks since you've actually slowed down long enough to say something but 'hello' and 'gotta dash' to me as you run out the door!" Presley chimed in, setting down his tea cup on the coffee table so he could cross his arms.

"And you promised you'd help me out with my new project at the research center!" Polly added, turning her whole body to face Addie, tucking her legs under herself in a cross legged fashion. "But you've only ever come in to see Petra, and not me!"

"I'm sorry, guys." She ducked her head, rubbing the back of her neck. "It's just that I've just been so busy with the workshop. You know I've gotta stay on top. I haven't been the number one workshop in Portia for the last five years for nothing."

Polly snorted, a very un-Polly-like noise. "Oh, please! It's not as if you need the points! Higgins is a steady two *thousand* points behind you. You could stop working for the rest of the year and he still couldn't catch up to you."

"What's got you in such a rush, little one?" Isaac reached out and took Addie's hand.

"We know... well, *I* know it's not about the rankings." Polly said. "You've never worked this hard in all your time at Portia. You've got a fire under your ass that's bigger than the whole of Central Plaza! Question is, what could possibly more important than your ranking?"

Presley inhaled sharply. "Polly!" He exclaimed in a heated whisper. "Watch your language!" Polly rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue out at Addie, which made the latter female chuckle. When Addie didn't answer, Polly resorted to cruel tactics, which involved tickling.

"Polly! Polly! I'm going to spill my tea all over my clothes!" Addie managed to gasp out though the laughter. Polly just continued gleefully.

"Good! It's your punishment for not telling me what's going on! Are you taking a trip? Are you moving away? Yikes, I hope it's not that! Are you trying to make it into the Builder's Guild? That would be cool! Come on, spill!" At that exact moment, Polly pushed too hard, and, coincidentally, Addie did spill. But not in the way Polly was hoping.

"Polly!" Addie gasped as the hot tea soaked the front of her shirt, scalding her, then just as quickly going cold. But Polly didn't notice, she just kept on guessing.

"A boat? A fancy banquet for all your best friends? Really awesome presents for your best friends forever? Are you saving up for a new factory? A yard extension? A new house?" She suddenly stopped, as if something had knocked all the air from her body. "It's a guy, isn't it? You're saving up to get married, aren't you? You need a bigger house for babies, is that it? Are you pregnant? Oh my Peach, you're pregnant, aren't you? I KNEW IT! ADDIE'S GOT A BOYFRIEND!"

Addie covered Polly's mouth as fast as she could. "Polly! Quiet down or the whole town will hear you!" She glanced around to see if anyone had entered the Commerce Guild and overheard their conversation. Satisfied when no one else could be seen, Addie let Polly go. "I'm not pregnant, for your information. I've got other priorities right now."

"Oh my Peach, who is it, and why don't I know about it?" Polly was bouncing up and down in her seat, more excited about the prospect than Addie was. Addie looked around once more, checking for anyone lurking in a corner, before turning back to the group. Presley and Polly leaned in conspiratorially, while Isaac sat back with a lazy grin.

"What I say here stays between the four of us, you hear?" Addie looked at each person in turn, catching their eyes and staring them down. "I don't want the whole town knowing my secrets. Got it?" Polly nodded frantically, eager to get to the juicy details.

"You're right, Polly. I have been seeing someone." Polly's eyes widened as she wiggled in her seat like a caterpillar. Presley and Isaac just looked bemused. "You know how Arlo walked me home after the Day of Memories last year?" Polly nodded, but then the realization slowly dawned on her. If Addie thought her eyes had been wide before, then they were the size of dinner plates now. But then Polly seemed to deflate, and her eyes swept to Presley, who gave her a tiny, nearly imperceptible shrug. Addie watched Isaac's face fall from happy to worried, his forehead furrowing.

"Oh honey," Polly reached out comfortingly. This was not the reaction Addie has expected to get from her big news.

"What? What am I missing here?" Addie has never been more confused. Just what was going on?

"Arlo's gone." A deep, powerful voice came from the doorway. Addie whipped her head around to see Remington standing in the doorway, Builder Wang cupping a bloody nose just behind him. Where the heck had he come from so silently, and how had he overheard their conversation from that far away? "He took the first bus to Sandrock this morning. He left this behind." He advanced to press a single piece of paper into her hand. Addie couldn't take in the typewright fast enough.

The top of the page was emblazoned with the Flying Pigs logo, followed by a short letter of congratulations, an order to travel to Lucien immediately, and a extravagantly loopy signature. The letter was dated just a week before. Addie was speechless.

"I... I... I don't understand." She managed to stutter out. "How... Why... I don't get it. Is this a joke?"

"It's hardly a joke," Remington leaned up against the back of Isaac's chair. It was then Addie noticed just how exhausted he looked, as if he'd been awake all night.

"When did you find out about this?" Addie asked Remington. He couldn't answer right away.

"Five days ago." The words seemed to stick in his throat. "I've taken over as Captain of the Civil Corps. Sam and I have split up Arlo's patrol routes, which probably explains our slightly bedraggled appearances."

Addie was trying so hard not to cry. Arlo had left Portia without telling her and without saying goodbye. He'd kept his greatest achievement a secret from her. That's what stung: after all the scheming and dreaming and planning the two of them had done to get Arlo into the Flying Pigs, Arlo still hadn't found it in himself to share his success it with her. The room seemed to go blurry for a moment.

Polly wrapped herself in a hug around Addie, holding her tightly, while Isaac took her hands gently and squeezed. Presley stood up to walk behind the couch and place his hands gently on Addie's shoulders. Only then did the tears start to fall onto Addie's cheeks as she feverishly blinked to keep them away.

"Hey guys," a voice came from the doorway. Everyone looked up to see Wang still standing there, holding his nose to staunch the tiny trickle of blood there. "This has been real heartwarming, but can I get some help here?"

The glares from Polly, Presley, and Isaac shut him up pretty quickly. Wang mumbled good apologies and stepped outside.

Remington sighed. "I'll leave you guys be." He took one last look at Addie desperately trying to hold it together before heading out the door, closing it softly behind him. Once he left, Addie burst into sobs that should her whole body.

"It's okay, little one. Cry as much as you like." Isaac crooned softly. "We're all right here for you." So cry she did.

q’s thoughts on: love o2o

You know what? (Yes, I’m using capital letters for this) Let’s do a proper review of this drama, because I feel like this could actually be very interesting but first, let me confess that I am a very negative person. Bad things just stand out to me more prominently, even if the drama itself isn’t all bad itself.

Before anyone bashes me for this long negative review, I have to say that I enjoyed this drama at first. It was a cute drama, a bit on the fluffy side, but it was a bit like chewing gum, in that it lost its taste towards the end. Anyways, let’s get started :)

Okay, so I started this drama purely because the ML is Yang Yang (I’m watching The King’s Avatar atm and thought I would check out his other stuff cos he’s so prettyyy *squeal*) Ofc, it helped that this was a romcom as well - what is life without romance and comedy? But honestly, both genres weren’t portrayed as well as I had hoped, and even some of the characters were a bit annoying.

First of all, romance. Please fight me if you disagree that kiss scenes are literally the reason why dramas get tagged with the romance genre. This drama had the most horrible kiss scenes ever. We have the ML kissing the stick of wood that is the FL. I read somewhere that someone compared it to kissing a piece of cardboard and seriously, I completely and utterly agree. There aren’t even that many kiss scenes in the drama itself and in every single one of them, she is LIKE A PIECE OF CARDBOARD! It was frustrating as heck and I hated all of them because it was just so... urgh.

Okay, maybe you think kiss scenes aren’t the reason why dramas get tagged with the romance genre, and it’s more because of the interaction between the ML and FL. Legit, their relationship just feels so forced and I can’t help comparing it sometimes to the relationship between a human and their pet dog. (I’m sure even the characters themselves mention it somewhere in the drama itself)

Next, comedy. I admit I smiled and chuckled at some of the scenes, but the drama itself really dragged towards the end. Most of the comedy involves the ML teasing the FL, the FL teasing her friends (or vice versa), the ML messing with his friends or the ML’s friends messing around. Honestly, it was funny at first but it got kinda tedious after about 20 episodes.

Just the fact that these two genres weren’t that great really isn’t helped by the lack of plot either. Most romcoms have a driving backstory so as to the reason why the ML/FL have a certain characteristic, but this drama really doesn’t really have a plot or even any sort of story like that. There is no overwhelming plot and the drama itself just plods along at its own pace.

Now, let’s talk about the actors/actresses. I like Yang Yang in The King’s Avatar, but I don’t like him in this one. He plays the perfect Xiao Nai, who is kinda robotic, a bit rigid and honestly, a bit too perfect. Like, his only flaw is he can’t cook? That’s cliché and not even a flaw (technically) But for a romcom, I can let that slide. However, the fact that his only expression is a blank face (or the occasional smirk) was kinda irritating. It would have been nice to see some other expressions. Honestly, he even speaks pretty monotonously as well, it’s pretty much the same tone, the same tempo, and even the same frequency sometimes. Whenever I watched an episode, I can’t help but feel that he forces his voice to be a bit lower as well.

The female lead was played by Zheng Shuang, who is pretty but looks unhealthily skinny. I don’t want to hate on her figure because it’s up to her how she wants it to look like, but I don’t think she should have been the FL for this drama. Heck, one of her friends compared her figure to her supposed rival-in-love’s figure, and all I could think of was the fact that rival-in-love had a healthier-looking figure. The entire drama really has double standards. It tells that looks aren’t everything and that inner beauty is more important, but at the end of the day, all the characters just focus on looks. For example, the FL is meant to be this really brilliant computer science student; she even gets a scholarship at Tsinghua university (which is really hard to even get into btw) yet when she interns at the ML’s company (which consists of all males because one of the guys has gynophobia), she does some computer-related stuff for a bit and then resorts to bringing food, drinks, blankets and even mattresses for the guys when they have to work overtime constantly. Honestly, I get that she hasn’t graduated yet, but she could have been a bit more helpful, right?

Secondary leads just annoyed the heck out of me. I can’t be bothered to even complain about them. Let’s move on.

I’m not sure if you could call this a redeeming feature but there wasn’t really a villain in this drama, just a bunch of people there to annoy the ML/FL and the people around them. I guess it made the entire drama relatively lighthearted without much angst, but at the same time, once the ‘villains’ had annoyed the leads and friends, the scenes got a bit repetitive and it meant that the entire drama didn’t really have much of a point.

The soundtrack was just passable. I liked the tracks but I felt like there weren’t enough tracks to keep the scenes different. Overall, the entire drama feels dragged out, as though it was made purely for the viewer ratings. I definitely won’t watch this again, but I think I might give the movie version a try instead or maybe read the novel it’s based on. I feel as though this drama really doesn’t do the story justice.
