Waste Away Hex

A popularly recorded spell, although not necessarily popularly performed (if only because of the time and expense demanded), the following was no doubt invented by the owner of a spiritual supply store wishing to drum up business quickly. Deriving from New Orleans, this spell has now passed into general Western magical lexicon.

Graveyard dirt is combined with a host of standard formulas: Asafetida powder, Babel powder, Black Cat Oil, Damnation Water, Four Thieves Vinegar, Goofer Dust, Jezebel Root Powder, Lost and Away Powder, Mummy Oil.

This blend is mixed with some item belonging to the spell’s target, as intimate as possible.

Placed in a small bag, it’s buried or hidden near the target’s home. The goal of this hex is to cause the victim to gradually waste away, becoming listless, passive, and losing vitality and life force.

The End Is Near: "News" organizations using AI to create content, firing human writers

A new byline showed up Wednesday on io9: “Gizmodo Bot.” The site’s editorial staff had no input or advance notice of the new AI-generator, snuck in by parent company G/O Media.

G/O Media’s AI-generated articles are riddled with errors and outdated information, and block reader comments.

“As you may have seen today, an AI-generated article appeared on io9,” James Whitbrook, deputy editor at io9 and Gizmodo, tweeted. “I was informed approximately 10 minutes beforehand, and no one at io9 played a part in its editing or publication.”

Whitbrook sent a statement to G/O Media along with “a lengthy list of corrections.” In part, his statement said, “The article published on io9 today rejects the very standards this team holds itself to on a daily basis as critics and as reporters. It is shoddily written, it is riddled with basic errors; in closing the comments section off, it denies our readers, the lifeblood of this network, the chance to publicly hold us accountable, and to call this work exactly what it is: embarrassing, unpublishable, disrespectful of both the audience and the people who work here, and a blow to our authority and integrity.”

He continued, “It is shameful that this work has been put to our audience and to our peers in the industry as a window to G/O’s future, and it is shameful that we as a team have had to spend an egregious amount of time away from our actual work to make it clear to you the unacceptable errors made in publishing this piece.”

According to the Gizmodo Media Group Union, affiliated with WGA East, the AI effort has “been pushed by” G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller, recently hired editorial director Merrill Brown, and deputy editorial director Lea Goldman.

In 2019, Spanfeller and private-equity firm Great Hill Partners acquired Gizmodo Media Group (previously Gawker Media) and The Onion.

The Writers Guild of America issued a blistering condemnation of G/O Media’s use of artificial intelligence to generate content.

“These AI-generated posts are only the beginning. Such articles represent an existential threat to journalism. Our members are professionally harmed by G/O Media’s supposed ‘test’ of AI-generated articles.”

WGA added, “But this fight is not only about members in online media. This is the same fight happening in broadcast newsrooms throughout our union. This is the same fight our film, television, and streaming colleagues are waging against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) in their strike.”

The union, in its statement, said it “demands an immediate end of AI-generated articles on G/O Media sites,” which include The A.V. Club, Deadspin, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, The Onion, Quartz, The Root, and The Takeout.

Just weeks after news broke that tech site CNET was secretly using artificial intelligence to produce articles, the company is doing extensive layoffs that include several longtime employees, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation. The layoffs total 10 percent of the public masthead.

Greedy corporate sleazeballs using artificial intelligence are replacing humans with cost-free machines to barf out garbage content.

This is what end-stage capitalism looks like: An ouroborus of machines feeding machines in a downward spiral, with no room for humans between the teeth of their hungry gears.

Anyone who cares about human life, let alone wants to be a writer, should be getting out the EMP tools and burning down capitalist infrastructure right now before it's too late.

Hoodoo 101 - Jezebel Root

What is Jezebel root & why is it used in Traditional Hoodoo & Vodou?

Jezebel Root is a feminine root used in traditional Hoodoo & Vodou for dominating a wealthy man, sugar daddy or powerful person and is sometimes used for hexing or cursing. This root was named after a mythical biblical figure Queen Jezebel who belonged the Omri dynasty of the Kingdom Israel in 852 BC. As a controversial figure, she was known to be extremely cunning and ruthless, using her power to gain the upper hand by any means necessary. Historically this plant has been used by ADOS who practiced Hoodoo & Vodou, for a variety of reasons. The Jezebel stereotype was an oppressive image that was used for the sexual assault and servitude of black women during chattel slavery in the US. This root was typically associated with brothels, working girls, vaudeville/showgirls and mistresses who needed to keep their bills paid and food on their tables, by attracting abundance and docility from rich clients to better their lives as a means of survival.

Today this root is still very potent and extremely beneficial for anyone who works in any type of service industry but is typically used by women seeking a luxury lifestyle via wealthy boyfriend or sugar daddy. Typically, these roots are fed or dressed in a variety of ways and placed in mojo bags, candles or other spells to manifest their intention.

Unfortunately, in modern times authentic Jezebel root has been extremely hard to come by and the majority of Jezebel root being sold on the market is actually common garden variety mulch or cherry bark. To the untrained eye it might resemble an actual root, especially when ground up. Here is a common example of fake jezebel root that you’ll typically see being sold in spiritual shops in person or online below.

Real jezebel root should not resemble bark or any type of mulch. Depending on the maturity of the root, the main root will always have multiple smaller roots sprouting from it, unless they have been clipped or shaven off. It should always look like a root! Fake jezebel root is also easy to snap and like most bark, has a dark brown center. Real jezebel root should be somewhat flexible and have a white center, when broken open.

While this is an easy to mistake to make, many trusted shops are STILL selling fake jezebel root to their clientele. A Cantrip Wreathe I made for a client, which involved empowering and aligning the virtues of eight Botanical Spirits within a framework of Knot Magic.

In this Wreathe, eight knots are underpinned by Nutmeg, Wishing Bean, Jezebel Root, Beth Root, High John root, Master Root, Cinammon Stick, and Lucky Hand root, respectively. The ninth and final knot serves to bind these virtues together synergistically, forming a new 'alloy' of virtues specialized for the given task.

I'm not really a fan of DC retconning the way Damian became part of the batfamily from "Damian is introduced to Bruce, Bruce decides to let Damian stay with Talia and not pursue them not once but twice, Talia brings Damian to Gotham again during Batman RIP and leaves him with Bruce again (however exactly that happened, DC never explained it), Bruce gets lost in time during Final Crisis and Damian becomes Robin to Dick's Batman" to "Talia introduced Damian to Bruce and Bruce immediately tried to bond with him, but got shot and send back in time by Darkseid shortly afterwards, cutting Bruce's attempt at parenting short"

I get it's easier to understand and Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul probably isn't canon anymore considering that many of Damian's more recent stories act like Damian grew up around Ra's, which strongly contradicts Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul.

But Damian doesn't really gain anything from this retcon. First of all, it's not a proper retcon, by which I mean an arc or a oneshot that shows Bruce and Damian bonding, a story that truly replaces the original storyline, we only get single panels that promise us that this is how it actually went down now without elaborating on it.

It's also either written with the main intention of making it sound like Bruce was a better father to Damian than he was in the original storyline:

By acting like Bruce had been dedicated to bond with Damian and teach him another way right from the start.

Or with the intention to create a sob story for Tim about how Bruce forgot all about Tim the minute Damian showed up:

Completely ignoring that Bruce made sure to tell Tim that Damian's arrival wouldn't change anything:

Tim is the one who storms away and acts rather childish.

Even though in fact nothing did really change for several months. Bruce did not make Damian Robin, he did not look for Damian after the explosion on the boat. Instead he went on a date with Jezebel Jet:

Feeling possibly sad about what happened with Damian, but basically going back to business right away.

When Tim goes out alone to face a villain that just beat Bruce to a pulp, according to Alfred because Tim is still shaken by meeting Damian:

Bruce goes after him immediately despite being badly injured and high on painkillers to protect Tim and to reassure him that he has nothing to prove to him:

Bruce also didn't tell Tim about the result of the paternity test, probably out of consideration for Tim's feelings:

In fact Bruce did not refer to Damian as his son until the climax of Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul, always choosing a distancing term to refer to Damian prior to that moment.

But that story also ended with Bruce choosing not to pursue Talia who had once again left with Damian:

You know for all the times Bruce complains about Talia raising Damian to be an assassin he sure as hell was not all that invested in getting Damian away from the league during their first few meetings.

In the original canon that was it. Damian and Bruce did not meet again on-panel until Bruce returned from his adventures in the time stream. Somehow Damian became a member of Bruce's household before Battle for the Cowl off-panel.

And I get that retconning it so that Damian moved in with Bruce after Talia dropped him off the first time makes that whole thing easier to explain. But Bruce's rejection of Damian is important to make early Damian's behaviour more sympathetic. Because a lot of Damian's arrogant behaviour during that time was rooted in deep insecurity. By removing the reason for that insecurity from canon Damian's feelings become a lot more unreasonable when he in fact had very valid reasons to feel that way.

As a young(ish) woman with feminist sensibilities, I'm actually pretty glad Jezebel is getting shuttered because I don't associate myself with sociopathic sentimentalism without logic or rationality but you do you I guess.

I simply don't believe a publication in an industry rooted in getting vulnerable young women to share the worst things that ever happened to them is a net good for society. The entire Gawker empire is just filled with overeducated and underpaid pathological narcissists!

do you plan on rewriting the scp 963 article with dr. shaw? i know a lot of people say it's already not written the best, and i'm wondering if you'd give it some major rewrite or just sort of replace the character and leave it

the character dr. bright has been mentioned to be jewish, is dr. shaw as well? i'm not jewish personally but i know that, especially because he was such a well known character, a lot of jewish people (that i know at least) appreciated seeing that representation. ofc i understand that they're 2 separate characters so i don't expect them to be the same, but i'm curious because i've definitely seen mixed feelings on that aspect specifically

Hey hey! Dw about asking, I don’t feel forced to answer any of my asks and love talking to people!

Onto what you’re asking:

1. As of now there is an article being made! Unsure if it’ll replace the original’s slot at the moment. I’m sure you’re aware kaktus put me on board with the project, he proposed strong arming staff into the article getting the original slot but I have no updates as to how that’s going as of now. It is to note that I’ve lost contact with him since late April. None of our mutuals know what’s up with him either. I’ve both quintupletexted him and asked around;;

I’m making my own version of the proposed article, once he pops up again I’ll cross ref with him and probably ask for help with formatting because I suck at computer stuff.

2. Ethnically Shaw is Mexican, specifically Chicano-Indigenous. I’m latine myself and live in a community with a Mexican kind of majority (lossa Haitian people too, unsure which demographic is more prominent). A ton of family friends are from Mexico with indigenous roots and I only have two other Mexican characters so I have the advantage of being able to ask my pals from my former parish alongside my usual deep dive research. As for the Roma aspect of his character I’ve been doing research on both Caló and Chicano Romani peoples for him and his mother (https://www.tiktok.com/@florida.florian?_t=8eDhq1agf51&_r=1 here’s a link to my favorite mainstream Romani content creator. His informative videos have been of major help for writing them as well as Dr. Carina and their mom. He even has vids on how to write Romani characters!!)

I don’t have a religion for him or Ansel yet? His mom, Dr. Soraya Zugasti, however, is a Muslim convert and is actually hijabi, not presumed hijabi like Evelyn was. At the end of the day to my knowledge Judaism is an open religion with the exception of some ultra orthodox communities and Shaw is the kind of person to be pretty open minded when it comes to spirituality. Statistically, as Ansel and Soraya immigrated from Mexico, the country has a Christian/Catholic majority, especially in the time that they lived there. There’s always the possibility that Shaw could be a convert like how his mother converted to Islam from being mostly agnostic. I’d have to think more on it but it’s a good chance that I’ll write that in!

I also have more Jewish characters if that gives you and your friends reassurance! Most notably Carina’s wife Commander Jezebel Diamandis and her kids, Dick and Rachel, as well as one of Carina’s Uncles, Agent Hannemann Charles. I’ll have to draw em up soon but I’d like to think they’re pretty cool 😎

see this is why this is laughable because you’d think after emrata he’d be very careful when returning back to the scene of the crime. he knows that media interest in him with a girl in Tokyo would increase. Just like him going to any other “favorite place of his”. People see him and girl in Italy, Tokyo, and spread it because they want the clout of “OMG you saw him with his love in his loved cities”. Remember how his team reached out to Brittany because they knew she would promote him and LOT? With these influencers being the ones to capture him and TR in Japan after years of him being actually low key makes me wonder if they did the same with those people or just are deliberately going to hotspots knowing influencers/people chasing clout will capture images and make it organic. Also regarding Root, honestly I think either her mom, brother or a friend came and got her awhile back and have been the ones watching her. Boarding is insanely expensive and most places require vaccinations that requires a dog to rest for a bit. The excessive time differences and travel is a lot for a dog to adjust to. I dont think Taylor is some Jezebel per say. you can tell she likes the freedom to do whatever and stunt with Harry without having to be limited by caring for her dog or bringing her along.

Instructions:

Begin the ritual on a Saturday morning with a New Moon ahead for the night. Spend the day meditating on what you want, communing with your ancestors, petitioning for protection for the journey ahead. Treat your body and mind well, drink plenty of water. As the day moves ahead and the sun begins to set, take a shower and envision washing your old self away like paint rubbing off of your skin. If you can, bathe in a natural body of water after your initial shower. Utilise the energy of water for its ability to show you what's on the other side of the veil as well as slip one through to the other side. When finished with the water, change into all black clothing and put on your black veil, whether it be a simple piece of fabric or an ornate veil.

At 11:30 begin your way to the crossroads with your supplies. Make sure to find one that is relatively quiet and unused. You will start the ritual by casting your circle with the white chalk. Mark twelve points on the circle, draw a line halfway through the circle and draw a door on top of the line. This door is your entrance, and if you succeed, it will not be your exit. Be cautioned, this ritual is only for those who are ready to leave behind what they knew in favor for what their heart truly desires. By entering Midnight City, you enter a domain of darkness, chaos, and infinite potential.

Continue to set the space by placing a candle at each point. Place the sigil of Bathin at 12, an ancestor at 1, Malphas at 2, an ancestor at 3, Bifrons at 4, an ancestor at 5, Murmur at 6, an ancestor at 7, Gremory at 8, an ancestor at 9, Seere at 10, and an ancestor at 11.

Light each candle, moving in a star pattern. Walk the circle clockwise 12 times, end in the center and take a seat in front of the door, where your cauldron and chalice sit.

Pour the alcohol you brought as libation into the chalice and take a sip for yourself from the bottle.

In the cauldron begin a fire with the acacia wood. Let the smoke pour over you and breathe it in, feeling your psychic gifts attune and grow in power. Start the fire spell by throwing in dried hyssop, the spiritual opener. Throw the Bat's Head Root into the fire, bringing forth your greatest wishes. Build the fire with black walnut wood to access divine energies and encourage the demonic deities to bless you. Burn your dried Dittany of Crete to aid in manifestation, astral projection, and bring the underworld to you.

Take your athame, make yourself bleed and smudge your blood onto the Jezebel Root. This represents yours life force signature and your dedication to achieving your wish, your recognition of the risks involved, and accepting the darkness in and around yourself. Throw the root into the fire. Sprinkle Job's Tears into the fire to aid in your perseverance. Now that the fire has plenty of heat, add your Balm of Gilead Tears as an offering for summoning the spirits. The fire will soon go out, when it begins to dim, kill the flame with graveyard dirt, and add pieces of diatomite to the mix of ashes, resin and dirt. Smooth the surface, pour some road opening oil and smooth a final time before adding enough mercury to create a mirror.

Scry into the liquid metal. Repeat:

"Bathin, lead me to the city. Seere, see me to my wishes, mark me abundant. Bifrons, mark me intelligent in your realms. Murmur, bring to me the souls I wish to see. Malphas, act on behalf of my pains. Gremory, speak to me of the past and beyond."

This chant will bring youinto a trance. From their seat, you will rise and step upon the door. After you've stepped onto the door, you will disappear from the site and find yourself out of trance in a completely dark world. The previous part of the ritual was only the opening ceremony. It couldn't be that easy, could it? The six ancestors that you've called upon will be in the world with you, facing the same dangers you do. In this world, you are not human, but soul. The beings in this world are not friendly to human souls, besides the owners of the realm, the demons you've called on.

You will begin to walk forward, quietly. The beings in Midnight City are aware of your entrance and are seeking to find you. Even though you are in the dark, you have an advantage. You have your ancestors to guide you and give you help. Be sure to be quiet and take every single word your ancestors say seriously. Don't fall into fear.

To make it past the monsters, you must control your fear as it begins to smell and your path becomes laden with twigs and pits. Should you remain calm and focused, your path will be straight and clear. There is no set distance or time to the path, everything depends on you. You burned Job's Tears for a reason.

Should you fail and be caught, your soul will become trapped in Midnight City along with your ancestors souls, paying the ultimate price seven times. In darkness, you will wander, wounded and perpetually dying. You may be eaten whole, you may just be scratched, but if you're found, you've lost.

Should you succeed, you will begin to see a light coming toward you. You will be at a crossroad that fits the reality that coincides with your heart's desire. Your ancestors and demons will surround you, and tell you about what will change. This is your only way out, if you don't like it, you face falling into the trap of Midnight City forever or going into a reality you fear.
