Any good Chinese LGBT drama/ movie recommendations? And where to watch it?

Hmmm I thought I would have a lengthy list of recommendations but limited to just Chinese-language films/dramas, and ones that I would actually recommend, I realise that my list is a lot shorter 😅.

These are pretty much all going to be gay (mlm). Sorry for the lack of diversity 😔. Summaries are taken from Letterboxd for the most part.

霸王别姬 || Farewell My Concubine (1993) - China (mainland), Hong Kong - dir. Chen Kaige

Personal rating: 4/5 || [HQ link, EN subs]

Abandoned by his prostitute mother in 1920, Douzi was raised by a theater troupe. There he meets Shitou and over the following years the two develop an act entitled “Farewell My Concubine” that brings them fame and fortune. When Shitou marries Juxian, Douzi becomes jealous, the beginnings of the acting duo’s explosive breakup and tragic fall take root.

东宫西宫 || East Palace, West Palace (1996) - China (mainland) - dir. Zhang Yuan

A heterosexual Beijing policeman and a young homosexual challenge each other’s sexuality.

春光乍洩 || Happy Together (1997) - Hong Kong - dir. Wong Kar-wai

A couple take a trip to Argentina in search of a new beginning, but instead find themselves drifting ever further apart.

自梳 || Intimates (1997) - Hong Kong - dir. Jacob Cheung

Personal rating: 4/5 || [link, ZH subs]

Set in Hong Kong and China in the early 1900s, an older Wan and Wai travel through China in search of Foon, Wan's true love. Wai, whose on-and-off status with her boyfriend leads her into a struggle with self-identity, slowly learns about the life of the aging Wan. Through flashbacks, we learn about Wan in her early days and Foon, who move in and out of each other's lives.

美少年之恋 || Bishonen (1998) - Hong Kong - dir. Yonfan

Personal rating: 3/5 ~ 3.5/5 (I flipflop on this lol)

Jet is a gay hustler who one night spots a young man walking with a woman, and falls for him instantly. He does some research, and discovers that the man is called Sam, and is an apparently straight policeman.

蓝宇 || Lan Yu (2001) - China (mainland) - dir. Stanley Kwan

Personal rating: 5/5 || [HQ Link EN subs] [HQ link, ZH subs] - Bear in mind these are both the cut version of the movie. There are about 4 scenes cut from this version, which is unfortunately the most easily found.

A love story between a country boy in Beijing to study and a wealthy businessman set against the backdrop of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident.

春风沉醉的夜晚 || Spring Fever (2009) - China (mainland) - dir. Lou Ye

Personal rating: 3/5

Hired to spy on a philandering husband, Luo Haitao soon becomes entangled in a clandestine affair with the other man. Along with Luo’s girlfriend, they succumb to the delirium of drunken nights, but how long can their tryst last?

谁先爱上他的 || Dear Ex (2018) - Taiwan - dir. Mag Hsu, Chih-yen Hsu

One day Pak, a taxi driver who refuses to retire, meets Hoi, a retired single father, in a park. Although both are secretly gay, they are proud of the families they have created through hard work and determination. Yet in that brief initial encounter, something is unleashed in them which had been suppressed for so many years. As both men recount and recall their personal histories, they also contemplate a possible future together.

Danny slams his head against his locker.

“That kinda day?” Tucker asks from his left.

“That kinda month,” Danny slumps.

“It’s the second,” Sam says from his right.

“Yep,” Danny groans.

The two pat him consolingly on his back.

“Lay it on us, we can handle it,” Tucker says.

There’s a beat of silence before Danny sighs a gust of air frosting his locker. “You know how I was in the Zone yesterday?”

“Yeah?”

“Well-”

“Daddy!” a high pitched voice squeals from down the hall. The entire population of students turning to the voice.

A small child darts amongst the sea of bodies, a mop of pink hair standing bright against dark skin.

“Jay!” Danny exclaims in surprise. He bends down just in time to catch the child who flings themselves into his arms.

“Daddy?” Sam and Tucker echo.

“What are you doing here?” Danny asks them.

“Missed you,” they say, burying their head into his shoulder.

“Uh, Danny?” Sam lays a hand on his shoulder.

“This is Jellyblue,” Danny starts when Dash spots them.

"Fentina??" He calls, eyes wide. "The fuck is that."

"A child, you know? Small young people? A little older than a baby?" Danny quips.

"I know what a child is but tha-" Jellyblue turns in Danny's arms to look up at Dash with big brown eyes. "-at's actually adorable. Hello little guy."

The trio blink. Sam and Tucker exchanging faces behind Danny as Jellyblue smiles big. They have a missing front tooth.

"Ma name's Jellyblue! Am from the Zone!" Jellyblue declares.

Kwan smiles back, leaning down to be eye level with them. "That's cool! What's it like there?"

"Lonely and then dad found me and now am not lonely no more!" Jellyblue says, hugging Danny.

"Uh, why was a kid in the Zone to begin with?" Sam asks.

"I think they fell through a transient portal," Danny says.

"Daddy, daddy, daddy-" Jellyblue fists Danny's shirt and tugs.

"Yes, yes, yes, what is it?" Danny bounces Jellyblue making them squeal in delight.

"Why aren't there any floating cars no more?" They ask.

Danny and co blink.

"Floating cars?" Dash repeats.

"Yeah! I remember 'fore everything was green 'n purple, every body drove flying cars."

"What year do you think it is, Jellyblue?" Tucker asks.

"2893."

At this point the entire hallway of students is silent.

"Well that explains that." Danny half laughs.

"My planet was esploded-" Jellyblue makes a big motion with their hands. "Mommy said to find the [garbled] king, and I found you!"

"King of losers, you mean," Dash crows with laughter.

"Knock it off, Dash," Danny rolls his eyes hefting Jellyblue a little higher in his arms.

"Danny!" Jazz’s voice calls over the din of students. She pushes her way through the crowd, "I'm so sorry, I took my eyes off them for one minute and- oh you found them."

"Sorry Jazz, Jay followed me to school," Danny says.

"Daddy daddy daddy-" Jellyblue shakes Danny's shirt again.

"Yes yes yes, what's wrong, bud?" He rubs a thumb on Jellyblue's cheek, wiping away his tears.

"You're not a loser! Your cool! Why is he being mean?" Jellyblue wails.

"Oh Jellyblue," Danny puts a hand on the back of his head to pull him into a tight hug, "It's okay, that's just how Dash shows affection."

"I do not!?!" Dash squeaks.

"Being mean is..." Jellyblue sniffs.

"Still being mean," Danny says. "Don't be like Dash, he's just confused."

"I am not confused, Fentina!" Dash half shouts, half squeaks, which doing his best impression of a cooked lobster.

"You know, it’s a natural physiological phenomenon for a person to be embarrassed about feelings they don’t fully understand and it often leads to an avoidance of the deeper introspection that-" Dash holds up his hand in Jazz’s face, cutting her off.

"Yeah, I'm going to stop the talking textbook there-"

"Rude!"

"-good luck with the kid Fentoe-nail," he says before turning to walk away. "What're you losers looking at? Scram!"

The crowd disperses leaving the trio plus Jazz and Jellyblue alone.

"You know the entire school will know about him-"

"Them."

"Sorry, about them by the end of first period." Sam says.

"Wanna bet the whole school knows before it starts?" Tucker asks, fiddling with his PDA.

Sam squints at him, "...no. I don't think I will."

"What's the plan, little brother?" Jazz asks, pulling Jellyblue from him.

Jellyblue goes easily, smooshing their face into Jazz’s shoulder.

"Not to be that person, but their hair is pink," Tucker says glancing up.

"And?"

"Their name is Jellyblue?"

Jellyblue lifts their head, hair turning periwinkle purple, and skin shifting to something more green. They blink, bright blue eyes shining.

"Only you Danny, only you," Sam pats Danny consolingly.

The Devil's Den

TW: Mentions of blood, dog attacks, mental torture

Anubis sat in the living room in the house he shared with his brother and other close friends. He reread the texts Chan sent him, his hand slowly tightening around his phone increasingly tighter. He wasn’t a violent person. No one knew Anubis for being violent or able to even hurt a fly. But no one really got to see the other side of Anubis, the side that held all his anger, all his resentments towards the world. As he sat there rereading the messages his mind seemed to have snapped. His phone made a slight crack sound as the screen split at certain places. The sound brought him out of his little world, he looked up noticing Angel and Set looking at him with pained looks on their faces. Concern flooded their eyes as they looked him over. “You alright…” Angel started off his slightly higher pitched voice getting higher as he spoke nervously. Anubis cringed a little against his will at Angel’s voice, he looked at them both and nodded his head to signify he was all right.

“You’re not. Your pupils are shaking.” Set said as he walked closer to him. It was true, Anubis’ pupils were shaking violently, and he tried to rub them to make it stop. Set sat next to him, motioning Angel over to sit on the other side, and took his hand lightly squeezing it. “You haven’t acted like this since the stuff that happened with Ra. Are you sure everything is all right?” He asked looking into Anubis’ eyes and lightly stroking his cheek as tears welled up in Anubis’ eyes.

“Sung got hurt.” He whispered silently, voice cracking a bit as he did. Set and Angel looked at each other with worry but nodded as Set took a deep breath. Angel hugged his arm lightly while Set kept a firm hold of his hand. Nubis’ anger seemed to subside for a second, worried about his boyfriend’s wellbeing more than anything else. He might have been projecting, maybe, what happened with his own ex passing on to this situation. He wasn’t sure but it pissed him off that his boyfriend, the sweetest being he’s met got hurt by some jackass.

“What do you have planned?” Set asked as Anubis looked at his phone one more time before glancing at the other two and then cracked his neck a little.

“Payback.”

“So, tell me again why we can’t kill him?” Ari asked as she laid her head on Set’s shoulder. They were currently in Anubis’ old practice building. They were waiting for Anubis and Loki to come around with some human they didn’t know much about. All they knew was that he hurt Jisung and that was enough for them to jump along with the plan. No one hurt a friend and got away with it, no matter how long ago it was.

“Cause then Anubis, me and Angel will constantly have to see his idiotic face whenever we step into the Undercity.” Jay scrunched their nose a little as they let out an exaggerated sigh.

“Humans need to learn their place in this world.” She muttered as she picked on her nail polish. Set snorted a little and laid his head on her head.

“You say that as if Sung isn’t human.” Jay scoffed and shook her head moving to look at him.

“Nah, that boy is a damn supernatural if I have anything to say about it. I’ll make sure he’s immortal before I turn 30.”

“So before 10 years from now?” Set looked at her with raised brows and she nodded her head proudly. Set rolled his eyes before they both looked up to the door watching as the human, Kwan Donghyun, walked in two sets of green translucent strings hovering around him. Loki’s strings of control. Humans couldn’t see them, and other gods and supernatural beings only saw them very faintly. Loki walked in after fingers out and moving, Anubis and Angel behind him. Anubis kicked a chair into the middle of the dusty room, combat boots making loud thuds as he walked past it. Loki moved the human along, letting the strings let go as he got to the chair. Donghyun flopped into the chair half dazed with a small groan as he tried to process where he was.

“Puppet.” Loki muttered his Irish accent thick with disgust and annoyance. Angel skipped over to the two draped himself over their laps while Loki leaned on the back of Set’s back laying their head on his. “I’m so tired.” He grumbled lowly.

Angel giggled as they grinned big their fangs popping out. “I tagged along. Nubis said I can do something.~” Ari snorted while Set rolled his eyes at his friend but smiled and looked at his brother.

“So, he’s here.” He eyes the human. “Sort of. What’s the plan now?” He asked, looking around to see if there was something to tie him down with or anything.

“Hallucinations.” Anubis said simply and the 4 of them looked at each other with wide eyes.

“Woah you’re going all out.” Angel said as their eyebrows raised.

“Are you sure…you haven’t been the…strongest recently.” Set said looking at his brother as he chewed his bottom lip with concern. Anubis nodded his head and leaned against a wall in front of the chair Donghyun was sitting on.

“Yes, I’m sure. You and Ari are going to make sure he stays still. Loki is going to monitor, and Angel is going to add a little…extra encouragement.” He said simply, his deep voice ringing out. They all looked at each other and just nodded, all going into their positions. Ari on Hyun’s left, Set on his right and Angel standing behind him. Anubis closed his eyes as he took a deep breath focusing his powers. Hyun started to move coming to his senses. Ari held his arm and leg down Set doing the same on the other side while Angel held his head in place. When Anubis reopened his eyes, they swirled, his normal one grey and one black swirling with white and gold as they glowed. He took off his beanie, his ears popping out and letting his tail swish behind him. He only ever let them out for situations like this.

He looked into Donghyun’s eyes and that’s when he stepped into his head.

Donghyun’s eyes opened as he looked around confused. He didn’t know where he was. Everything was cloudy and chilly.

It didn’t seem real.

It felt like he was in a different dimension.

He tried to yell to scream for someone, but nothing came out.

Then he felt movement and followed it. He walked around fists balled as trees, sidewalks and grass started to materialize. ‘A park?’ He thought to himself as he walked along one of the sidewalks and looked around trying to figure out where he was exactly.

And that’s when he heard them.

Barking.

His heart sped up as he felt his legs start running. He wasn’t thinking. He just ran. The sound of his heart rate was pounding in his ears as the barking got louder and louder. He panted as he kept running trying to scream, yell, something but he couldn’t. Tears welled in the corners of his eyes as he felt his legs sting, but he couldn’t stop running. ‘Why now? Why me?’ He frantically thought as the tears fell down his face. He looked up and saw a glowing light and his chest felt light as he smiled. That was his escape, he was so close.

But then he tripped.

His eyes widened as he fell knees and palms scraping. His heart stopped when the sounds of the dogs were right behind him. He tried to get up, but he couldn’t, he let out choked sobs, bile rising up into his throat. He finally screamed when one of them bit into his shoulder. He tried to move, to push them away. He turned and screaming increasingly more by the minute, another dog coming and biting his thigh. Their teeth sunk into him. Blood gushed everywhere, dripping onto the sidewalk under him. Everything he saw was red.

His eyes widened when another one, the last one, trotted up to him and jumped on him. It clawed and mauled his face. He screamed, flailed around until he slowly started to give up.

His greatest fear was coming true.

On the outside, Set and Jay dug their nails into his arms and legs, making sure to leave visible scratches with blood dripping from them. Angel dug his claws deep into the human’s face. They all admired their work, watching him convulse and shake, skin turning paler as the seconds passed. Sweat dripped down his face. His eyes were a pure milky white with a gold glow on them. He deserved this, they all collectively agreed. He deserved this and they were being nice, so much worse could have happened.

As he let himself go limp, the dogs started to disappear, and everything started going fuzzy and black. He panted as he looked around, looking at his hands and legs, his blood still decorating them the brightest red possible. He looked at the ground noticing its now mirror like. He touched it noticing the ripple his finger tips caused, he started to slowly let himself get up until he heard footsteps. His heart started to pick up pace as he tried to scramble up and be ready to run more.

Deep humming could be heard, the deep humming of a lullaby it seemed. He looked up and that’s when he saw him. Anubis in his godly form. Eyes devoid of pupils or irises, one fully grey and the other fully white. They looked like voids with no emotion in them. His jackal ears sat proudly on the top of his head dangly earrings along with multiple rings decorating both of them while his tail, wrapped and decorated in beautiful golds and silk. His headdress sat on his head, the colors signifying his power. His canines poked out from his lips, gold fang caps over them. His claws are long and commanding, rings all over his fingers along with hieroglyphic tattoos displayed on his hands and exposed chest. Inky black tears started to trail down his face as he tilted his head at the human below him.

He looked ethereal and he knew it and he basketed in the look of slight awe and fear that the human held as he looked up at him.

He stepped closer, Hyun gulping and trying to inch away. Being taller in height made Anubis’ steps longer and he caught up to the human with 2 long strides. He bent down and grabbed his face, not caring if his claws dug into his cheeks. He looked him over judging him, anger pooling inside of him. Hyun shook and let out shallow breaths as he waited for anything, most literally anything. After one more scrutinizing look he spoke up. “You humans confuse me.” His deep voice shook his heart, fear pooling inside of him as dread and anxiety made him whimper and start to cry again. Anubis fought the smirk on his face as he continued, hand moving to wrap around the human’s throat. “You hurt each other for your own gain. Why don’t you just do your own dirty work?” He started applying pressure, Hyun gasped moving his hand to wrap around his wrist. “Whatever reason you have you deserve everything bad that happens to you. As much as I wish I could kill you, but I would prefer to never see your disgusting face ever again.”

His hand tightened enough to cause actual harm to his materialized body. He was going to give him the exact thing he did to Sung. An eye for an eye after all.

“Now. I’m only saying this once. Stay away from Jisung.” He pulled him close to him by the neck making sure their eyes made contact. “You got it?” He growled lowly fangs exposed more. Hyun nodded as best as he could, as quickly as possible. He grinned letting go and that’s when his vision got blurry again and he started coming back to it.

The three of them let go of him Loki’s watchful eyes as he made sure the human didn’t do anything rash. They slowly stepped away as they went to their places from before. Anubis closed his eyes letting his tail and ears disappear as he held his head with a small tiny groan escaping his lips. Donghyun’s eyes snapped open as he let a sharp breath out. He shook as he inhaled and exhaled quickly, slightly panicking as he instantly got up and ran. He didn’t know where he was, who brought him there or what had just happened, but he didn’t care. He wanted out. As they watched him leave Jay let out a snort. “Pathetic.” They muttered under their breath watching the human escape. Set got up to help Anubis sit down lightly rubbing his shoulders while Angel rubbed his temples. “I think it worked.~” Angel said with a wide grin and giggle while Anubis gave a faint small smile.

“Yeah.~ I don’t think he’s coming around anytime soon.” Set said with a nod as he gave his brother a hug.

“Scared him shitless.” Ari said with a nod and a laugh Angel soon following along.

“I’m just happy he didn’t get violent with any of you. I would have had to get my hands dirty.” Loki muttered slowly getting up and stretching. “Now let’s go. Nubis has to lay down before he passing out.” They all nodded helping Anubis up as they walked out, quietly chatting about what happened and certain plans for the rest of the week.
