Jaybird screaming in the dead of night
Home is where the hurt is: Part 1
-
“Hey Jay,” Zayne sang, slowly, menacingly, butchering ‘Hey Jude’, while swirling himself around the corner into the kitchen startling Jay. “Don’t be afraid.”
Jay, at the first notes of his name in rhyme, turned away from the counter and his dinner prep, his eyebrows raising in surprise and the hairs on his arms in alarm. Just hearing his name in song gave him many reasons to be afraid. He raised his chopping knife in an automatic response, just holding it out in front of him.
“Drop the knife,” Zayne said, now stepping forward and emphasizing his words with the click of his own knife, flicking it up, “Unless you want to compare which one is sharper.”
His kitchen knife might not be as sharp, but it was coated in onion juices. Not an experiment Jay wanted to engage in. With a loud clank, he dropped it in the sink, falling another step back.
Zayne kept advancing on him, slowly, backing him into the dark corner of the kitchen, talking and waving his knife about with every step. “So, I just bumped into your neighbour, downstairs. Or well, he almost fully crashed into me, really. So I shouted after him, holding the door open for him, ‘Hey, what’s the hurry?!’ And you know what he shouted back?”
Probably, yeah, Jay had an inkling of where this was going. And how it was now going to bite – stab – him in the arse. But he kept his mouth shut, dread stealing his voice and knowing Zayne would continue his terrorizing monologue anyway.
Which he did. “He said, ‘Sorry, I’m late!’. So I asked, ‘Late for what?!’” The conversational tone fell away as he leaned forward against Jay, one hand brushing against his, pinning him to the kitchen counter. “Work,” he breathed in Jay’s face. “He was late for work.”
Jay leaned back as far as he could, hands on the edge of the counter, arms bending. He tried to make a soft hum in feigned surprise, but it turned to a soft but sharp inhale as the knife was brought up in his face.
“You never told me he works night shifts,” Zayne crooned, brushing the flat of the knife over Jay’s jawline.
“I mean, it never really came u—”
“But then it all started making sense, you know. How you always tried to hold back on your screaming in the afternoon. And here I was, making an effort to keep the noise down at night…”
The knife fell away from Jay’s clenched jaw, dropped against his clavicle and disappeared under his collar. The cold sensation turned sharper, gradually pressing into his skin.
“Well, no need to worry about that now, you don’t have to hold back. He just left. You can scream as much as you want.”
~
~Bonus~
Zayne leaned back and pulled the kitchen knife from the sink.
“What were you chopping?” he asked, turning the knife back and forth as if he could analyse what was on it (instead of, you know, looking back).
“Onions...”
“Hm.” He swiped his own blade over the knife as if sharpening it, making them sing a threatening tune together. “Do you think it stings in more than just your eyes?”
“You don't need onions to make me cry,” Jay tried to goad him into dropping the knife. He didn’t need a dual-wielding Zayne.
Zayne merely stared at him, eyes softening to a fond expression as he was mulling it over and the stupidity of Jay’s words hit him.
“You’re right,” he said, to Jay’s short-lived relieve. Then his tone shifted and he merely whispered: “I don't.”

barbecue day (feat damian)
Tumblr media
— aurora todd verse
Tumblr media
"Well it's not."
"It is, Todd. I know it's kind of hard for you to understand, but it is."
"It's not—"
She is in the kitchen, cutting some condiments for some sambal to go along with chicken thighs and tomahawk steaks that Jason is currently roasted over portable grills in backyard.
But he's apparently bickering with Damian—who is visiting from his university's summer break, who's helping here and there but mostly supervising Aurora, which she has provided with entertainment in the form of her inflatable pool and her baby toys.
The thing is, they've been bickering for like ten minutes straight. She's pretty sure their closest neighbor know what they are arguing about already—meanwhile she only caught something about latest episode of some sci-fi show and latest video game update because she was chopping garlic with her new chopper and it drown their voices for her.
She needs to make sure that they get along.
And oh, how she has an idea.
As she wash her hands, she can hear them becoming more louder.
When she is finally opened the kitchen door towards the backyard, she finds out Jason's making gesture with his free hand and his other gripping kitchen tongs and Damian, which is inside Rora's inflatable balloon, making gestures with his hands holding some of her baby girl's toys.
If this isn't comical.
She clears her throat.
"Jay."
Jason instantly stops talking and Damian too—but not without drawing out his last syllables.
Damian immediately sits down on inside the pool.
"Yeah, sweetheart?"
Jason is back facing the grill, flipping some of the chicken thighs. You want to roll your eyes in affection.
"I need you and Damian to buy me some Thai chili and lemongrass."
"I thought we already have all the ingredients."
"Well, we actually were underestimating the need of several sambals."
Jason basically can't say no to her request, so he just drops the kitchen tongs and cleans his hands on the nearby outdoor faucet. Then, he picks up Rora from inside the pool.
Damian gets up, eyeing the grill—probably about to take over Jason's work. But she claps her hand seemingly to surprise her brother-in-law.
"Damian, why don't you go with Jay and Rora? I can handle the grill."
Tumblr media
"How much she said she needs the lemongrass again?"
Damian asks when they're at the last traffic light before the grocery store. He's the one driving. Jason's shotgunning and Rora is on her baby chair on the backseat.
"Five stalks, but she also said just pick one plastic wrap building."
"And—"
"Ten ounces."
"Ons!"
Rora mimics, which surprised Damian.
"Thank you, Rora."
When it's green, he starts talking again—while Jason is currently turning to face Rora, giving her grubby little hands her a baby biscuit.
"I cannot believe she's your spawn, Todd."
"Me neither."
Jason looks ahead—back to the street in front of them afterwards, but Damian can see from the corner of his eye that he sports a fondly smile because they're talking about his niece.
"I actually think she acts more like her mom and the biggest evidence that she's yours is because she literally have your eye color, which is improbable for it to come from her mom's genetics because her eyes are dark and her heritage; but now I can see that she behaves like you, too."
Jason definitely isn't prepared to hear his little brother saying all of that, but he turns his head to the
"Really?"
"Yup. Believe me or not, before we were bickering—which I am sure why your wife sent us away, if you haven't noticed yet—I was inspecting how you and Rora interacts."
"Of course you did."
Damian dismisses his older brother.
"And from that, I can see that she's your mini you. I mean, she's obviously her mom's mini me, but it's not without you."
"That's genuinely the nicest thing you said to me today, little brother, and I appreciate that."
The twenty-one years old man shrugs.
"Don't thank me. I was just saying facts. Anyway, we're here."
Damian stops the engine and opens his car door. He goes to the backseat door to release and hoist Rora from her seat.
Jason definitely can see his smile before opening his own door, though.
Tumblr media
"What's this sambal called again?"
Damian points his fork at the chopped herbs and Thai chili bowl of sambal.
They already finished cooking and are sitting together in a round backyard dinner table.
"Matah. M-a-t-a-h."
"Matah," Damian nods, "it's so fresh and fragrant from the kaffir lime leaves and the lemongrass. I like it. It's unlike anything I have ever tried."
"We can put it in a jar if you want to have some when you're going back to to uni, right, Jay?"
"Of course. You should send him your recipe too, so if he runs out he can make it himself. It's quite easy to make."
"Thank you."
Damian smiles gratefully at her and Jason. She almost cannot believe these two were bickering like teenage boys awhile ago. That's just what being siblings like, she guesses.
"Easy! Uncy!" Rora giggles. She's perches on her baby high chair beside her mom and face to face with Damian. Her little fingers holding a piece of cucumber that she's chewing.
(She is pleased she picks up "uncle" when she's talking to Damian)
"Thank you, little Rora."
Tumblr media
mariea's notes: another writing out of aurora todd universe. randomly, "cannot believe she's your spawn" line came into my mind and then the rest is history. i know this series(?) don't have much readers compared to my regular fluff or especially regular smut (lol) but i really love exploring the dynamics of this family throughout my writings. also, trying the third person now. probably going to stick to this. as always you can drop a request (any) or a question and thanks for reading <3

Love the headcanon of Kai eating foods that are crazy spicy (like Carolina reaper pepper hot), wether because he's the master of fire or because he just vibes with it, but I headcanon that Lloyd is also able to eat crazy hot foods as well because of being part dragon. So when it's Kai's night to cook, Nya is resigned to his use of spice, Zane can't taste it, Cole eats it fast enough to where he can mostly deal with it, and Jay physically can't handle it. I like to think that Lloyd thoroughly enjoys it, even though he doesn't really think it's very spicy. All of this is to say that I've had this very specific idea in my head for days and wanted to share⬇
-
[Kai's night to cook]
Jay: [on his hands and knees] Kai~ please I'm BEGGING you, PLEASE just make dinner edible! I don't want to start sweating just by being near the food!!
Kai: [chopping up a bunch of chilies] Tough shit, dude. It's not my fault you can't handle flavor. Besides everyone else likes my cooking
Jay: No! Just NO! Name ONE other person besides the master of fire, who wants to eat what's basically LAVA!
[Kid Lloyd runs into the kitchen]
Kid Lloyd: [sees the pile of chilies] Ooh, is that candy?! [Grabs one and bites into it]
Kid Lloyd: Awe, this isn't candy [Keeps eating it though]
Jay: [looking on in horror] ...
Kai: [smug look] Ha! Even the pipsqueak can handle the heat
Kai: [turns to Lloyd] Hey kid, help me out with this. We're gonna burn Jay's face off
Kid Lloyd: Yeah! [baby evil laugh]
Jay: [starts crying]
-
And that's the day the ninja discover Lloyd's immunity to spice

Happy new year! Here's a WIP (emphasis on the WIP) that I started writing a while ago for my favorite, Glacier!
Working Title: glacier falling in love
Fandom: Ninjago
When Cole thinks about it, he really couldn't be more obvious than he already was.
"Go catch up with your boyfriend!" "I hope you two are done making out." "I know you two are having a moment, but we have more important things to be doing." They had been piling on him a lot recently. It bugged him. What exactly did they think he and Zane were up to when no one else was around? They were just friends! Just like he was with Kai or Jay… but clearly no one else shared in that sentiment, except for Zane, though he never said it. It was just obvious whenever he rolled his eyes… At least, Cole thought that was what that meant. Was there something he was missing? Why wasn't anyone telling him? He grumbled to himself as he prepared his chili, something he rarely got to do anymore. (Not that he was complaining- Zane's food is amazing and he gets why everyone loved it more than his- it's just that it had felt like a forgotten hobby.) What exactly could he possibly be missing? He raked his brain as he chopped up some vegetables, frowning to himself. Maybe it was the fact that they always sat next to each other during meals. Well, that wasn't Cole's fault; Zane invited him to, patting the spot beside him. He had done that for days, and every single time, Cole came to join him, before it just became some sort of… routine for them. It would've been rude to reject the white ninja's request! Plus, if Zane suddenly didn't feel like eating that day, the master of earth always had the space for two helpings, so he didn't feel guilty about wasting food. Then, if it wasn't that, maybe it was because he always stayed behind to help Zane clean up after meals… No, it couldn't be. It was only rude to refuse helping a friend out. It wasn't his fault that everyone else always seemed to have something else to do… well, except when Wu or Nya would offer, but that was occasional, and Zane would only glance over at Cole for a moment before returning his gaze back to his sensei or fellow ninja. It always stirred something in his chest, but it was easier not to wonder about that. The master of earth sighed as he dumped the chopped vegetables into the chili, before grabbing the ladle and stirring slowly. If it wasn't either of those, then what could it be that the others were teasing them for?
Late in the evening, Cole had gotten up to get a glass of water. He had spent a lot of his day either training or drawing, and had forgotten about his bodily needs multiple times during the latter. He figured it'd be best if he got up to take care of at least one of them before heading to bed. After all, he had to be up early the next day, and the moon was well up in the sky by now. He stepped into the kitchen of the monastery and reached up into the cabinet full of cups and mugs. He closed the cabinet door after taking one, before nearly jumping up into the ceiling. "Zane- you nearly gave me a heart attack," he breathed out sharply, glaring ahead at the taller boy. He sighed. "We really need to get you a bell…" The other cocked his head and his brow curved upward in concern, the light from the dying kitchen bulb giving him a warm hue, one that clashed with his glowing blue eyes in an… interesting way. "Heart attack?" "No, not literally," the black ninja assured with an amused huff, heading over to the sink to get his water. He caught the way his shoulders and face relaxed with relief before he turned all the way towards the sink, and he had to hide away his humored smile. "Well, then, what bell would suffice? I can always download one if my silent entrances truly are a disturbance." Cole laughed at that. "No, no, I just mean that you're so quiet, I could've taken you for an intruder, and then I would've had to explain to Wu why you were stuck head first in the counter. You're lucky the bulb hasn't completely gone out yet." Zane shared in the laugh. "I suppose I am," he agreed. He paused to let him drink his water, watching all the while, before it seemed curiosity got the better of him and his lips pursed. "... If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing up this late?" "I could be asking you the same question." "I'll answer if you do." Well, fair was fair, Cole guessed. "Just drawing. I haven't been able to in ages, and time caught up with me," he mumbled, glancing away from the other sheepishly for a moment.
"And you?" "... I've been… trying to figure out my full capacities as a nindroid," Zane explained softly, almost reluctantly, looking down at the floor. "Maybe it is morbid curiosity, but I do want to know." It had only been a couple of weeks since the master of ice had learned that he was a nindroid. Cole was surprised. "Y'know, if you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to-" "But I do! I want to! It's just so… different from any of your experiences in life, from Jay's and Kai's, even Sensei Wu's, and after thinking I was the same in that aspect for so long… It almost feels like I'm generally different in every way than I thought I was. It feels like I lied to all of you, but I do not know what about." He sighs and shakes his head. "It is ridiculous, I know." Cole pursed his lips as he looked at the other up and down, trying to figure out what to say. He understood his feelings, maybe not in a way that he had genuinely felt in his own life, but he could empathize, thinking back to his own life and having to figure himself out for years. It certainly wasn't trying to figure one's self out from the ground up, though. "... I feel like that's just what it feels like to be human sometimes," he hummed. Zane looked at him again, an eyebrow raised. "Maybe not all the way, but in some ways. Sometimes, someone learns something about themselves they had never thought would be possible or had never thought about period, and it ends up feeling almost like the end of the world; you never knew this about yourself. You were never lying about who you were, you're just learning something new about yourself with everyone else. You're still the same person." He offered the other a reassuring grin. "That's the most sane response anyone could have." Zan blinked a couple of times, before he returned the smile sheepishly. "You seem to know more about this kind of thing than I thought you would have." "I'm full of surprises!" "Clearly," Zane responded, amused. The two shared a quiet moment as Cole sipped his water, before the black ninja sighed. "I should get some sleep… you coming?" "I will… May I take care of your glass?" "You may." He ceremoniously placed the cup in his hand. "Thanks." "It is my pleasure," the master of ice smiled, taking Cole's place at the sink. "Get some good rest. You are going to need it." The water started as Cole started making his way to the bedroom. "Good night." "Night." Cole had made it to his bunk, and even though he knew he needed to sleep, he couldn't quite reach that peace of mind. Something was stuck up in his brain, and he had to get it out. So, trying not to think about the later consequences of his current actions, he reached for his sketchbook.
(Because Cole stayed up late, he woke up late, yet still tired. “I can hear when you're awake” “Alright, Santa” Wu whoops his ass during training before he makes him do an extra two hours of training and clean the training area until it's spotless. Zane quietly joins in the punishment without being told. He could have gotten away scott free since it doesn't seem Wu had even known he had been awake, but he says that he technically deserved the same punishment, regardless of being caught. It leads the two to bond. Later, Zane feeds him dinner early and ushers him to bed, knowing he's exhausted.)
(Something between)
[Rewrite in Cole's perspective] Zane was making dinner, like he always did. He didn't mind cooking for everyone; he actually quite enjoyed it. It gave him time alone for a bit, let him think about other things. Normally, at least. Here he'd been, chopping away at the ingredients he'd be using, when Cole had entered, uninvited. Usually, this would have led Zane to shoo him away, as he did with anyone that entered without getting permission to- after all, there were knives in small spaces. It was dangerous. But Cole usually wasn't the one to enter; that was left for Kai and Jay. The master of earth knew better… So why was he here now? “Hello,” Zane greeted politely, setting the knife down. He could hear the confusion in his own voice, so he cleared it. “Did you need something, Cole?” Cole didn't say anything for a minute, looking around as if he hadn't meant to walk in at all. He scratched his cheek awkwardly. “I… don't know,” he finally managed, still standing beside the kitchen door. He huffed quietly at himself. “I guess I wanted to ask if… you wanted any help?” Zane blinked, surprised. No one had ever seemed interested in helping him. He raised a brow. “Really? Why would you want to? I feel like it would be… less than entertaining.

Previous/next/first
I am going to rewatch one episode of ninjago a day until I ether give up or finish I will put my thoughts down as I watch it and rate each episode out of ten. I missed a day because I was busy all day.
Day 5
Season 1 episode 5 can of worms
All the other ninja have legitimate reasons to be mad at Lloyd. But Kai is just angry over a video game score which I find hilarious.
This is gremlin Lloyd at his finest
Why is Zane so upset at his gi being pink. He literally wore a pink apron back in episode two
Baby Lloyd’s laugh :)
Kai had no problem with nya living with them two episodes ago
Also kai stop being sexist to your sister
He looks so guilty when nya says she can hear him. I guess season 1 & 2 kai dies have a Conscience.
Nya did not hesitate to throw the darts at her brothers head. Sibling bond at its finest. Also revenge.
Jay everyone can see your simping from a mile away.
Why would the elemental alliance put the tombs in the snake shape. It just makes it easier for trouble makers to open the tombs
SIMP. JAY IS SUCH A SIMP. Also post season 8 jays simping has nothing on season ones jays simping
Yes, jive the one thing that can stop the Sneks to your immature students who more times than not mess up and loos what ever they had been guarding.
PINK GI ZANE MY BELOVED
This is funny because Cole is literally carrying a cars worth of metal on his back.
Mail man :D also what the heck is he saying
Oh yes the plot convenient prophecy on a wall. Could they not just had pythor monologe about the devour instead
Small detail, Cole notices the constrictai burrowing underground first because he is the master of earth
The constrictai are probably my least favorite Snek just because of how boring they are. Like all the other tribes have cool powers but the constrictai just have super strength.
Why is Zane’s vision getting blurry he is literally a nindroid.
Once again coles slash should have literally chopped his head off
Music 10/10
Coles chili must be really bad if everyone hates it
I love the tree climbing
Why does I am only echo not evrey thing else Jay said
That frog is just eww
Best part of this episode kai gets high on venomari venom
Kai is aparently afraid of gingerbread men and elves. I don’t know wether to find that funny or sad.
Butt jokes always make me laugh for some reason
This is why wu should never give the ninja any important thing. They always lose it
High Kai is peek Comedy
Kai’s hand is clipping into jays hand
Samurai x kicking butt since 2012
Zane talks with coles voice
Jays simp-o-meter can simp over nya even in disguise
Kai’s Santa? Makes me loose my crap every time
How do they not notice nyas bracelet. Like come on they have probably scene it like a million times. Kai especially, but I can give him a pass because he is high
Also how does the sleeping gas work on Zane?
Says samurai were the highest class of Warrior and were noble. Literally insults them in the pilots calling them slow and clunky
They look like they are so done with Kai’s crap. I love high kai
Smack. After I first watched this episode any time I would get potstickers with my family I would smack them on my face and laugh and my family would look at me like I had grown two heads
Can of worms roll credits
They don’t blame Lloyd for this or say it wasn’t his fault they just say you can’t change what you did in the past but you can change your actions in the future. I love this because it’s avoiding the we forgive you it’s not you fault trope.
And rip high kai you will be missed. Also the venom just wares off for plot convenience. I wish they would have kept the gag going untill the end of the episode. It would have been hilarious
Small detail, Zane’s spinjitzu changes from white to pink when he changes his clothes
Kai’s scream is hilarious
That is very specific Cole
Our first time seeing ninjago city. And it looks so bad compared to newer Ninjago city.
Kai being smart :)
How not they not see the ninja
This makes me angry that they didn’t notice him
Zane be Indiana Joansing
Bros support bros
Oh zane I’m so proud of you, you are using phrases :D
Jays gonna have a lot of bad frostbite after this
Gremlin Lloyd my son
Final thoughts
This episode was just as enjoyable as I remembered. The jokes were funny and Kai being high was amazing. There was a reason this was my second favorite episode from season one. Over all I give this episode a 9.5/10

A Heck sausage wrap (ft. salted butter, Philadelphia, table salt, ground black pepper, HP BBQ Sauce, and Reggae Sauce), two episodes of Jay & Miles (one looking at a failed TV pilot for an 80s cartoon, and some arcade games, the other continuing coverage of an overlong 90s crossover event), two slices of toast (ft. salted butter & Marmite), two melted plastic cheese wraps (ft. salted butter, Philadelphia, table salt, ground black pepper, chopped spring onions & spinach, deepfried chicken strips, and tomato & basil soup [ft. ASDA Halloween Beastie cheese sauce]), three episodes of Doctor Who (Planet of The Spiders), sleep.
Several pieces of leftover garlic pizza base (soak in water, flatgrilled, season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then serve with one pan of leak & potato soup [ft. salted butter, table salt, ground black pepper, chopped spring onions & spinach, and deepfried chicken strips]), a Naked Blue Machine smoothie, a Laughing Cow bagel (ft. salted butter, table salt, ground black pepper, fried battered cod goujons, and Sweet Chili Sauce), an episode of American Crime Story (penultimate installment), another Laughing Cow bagel (ft. salted butter, table salt, ground black pepper, fried battered cod goujons, and Sweet Chili Sauce), an episode of Brand New Cherry Flavour (ft. uninvited house guests, charcoal mural montage, snorting pollen, and immolation), sleep.

A burger wrap (ft. salted butter, table salt, ground black pepper, chopped spring onions & spinach, melted plastic cheese, and tomato & basil soup [ft. ASDA Halloween Beastie cheese sauce]), one and a half Big Finish Eighth Doctor audios (the decent but rather slender Seasons Of Fear, and 50% of a trudgingly unexciting Gallifrey epic), the Unreal Sex book launch (although I was extremely spaced out and having a weird day this was an amazing showcase of young diverse talent. Some acts were more polished than others, some more to my tastes than others, but everyone had every reason to be there and honestly the story I will always think of as Wax Cunts was both the best written and delivered), a handful of chips, five chicken strips, a chicken burger (ft. a hash brown, and chicken shop chili sauce), a can of Dr Pepper, sleep.

when he doesn't know how to do something he bugs you with questions until you teach him
so its
"y/n what's a bain marie?"
and
"how the fuck do you butterfly a chicken?"
for AGES
it may take a while but you end up with a pretty bomb meal after 😌
jay
power cooking couple 😡💪
the two of you are a well oiled machine
it's like you're doing a choreographed dance you move around each other and trade off items and tasks like it's nothing
the other members are shocked
the two of you are so clumsy and dramatic outside of the kitchen but in there?
there's some music or a well-loved show in the background as you work
occasionally tapping utensils against the others lips to ask them to taste
cutcutecute someone get me a jay
jake
he's not bad at cooking! and he loves helping you
give him a specific task to do and jake's on it
he'll happily follow your lead as the one with the slightly less marginal level of experience
oh but if you're making ramen?
buckle up you're not handling simple jake anymore
no now it's jacque™
he'll fucking roast you like kitchen wars lmao
"what are you?" "i'm not saying it."
"what are you?" "...an idiot sandwich"
"good." *peck* "NOW GO PUT IN THE SEASONING"
sunghoon
he's clueless but acts so experienced
"-and now we put in the... chili flakes?"
*points* "that's furikake. that's chili flakes"
"as i knew already! it was a test! a test you passed!"
is awesome at finding cool recipes to try
not so awesome at executing them
but he has you to help 😌
he may call you his sous-chef
but ratatouille taught you a think or two about manipulating chefs lmao
sunoo
v v helpful
is very comfortable with knives (am i sneaking my mafia!sunoo into this? maybe)
he can chop fast quick and even so you ask him to do all of that
the stove is a bit of a hurdle for both of you
the fire came on once and you screamed
and you read one (1) article about leaving the gas on and you pestered the others to get an induction cooktop
so they did and you're still a bit scared
but you have successfully cooked pancakes once!
jungwon
fucking awesome
delegates and helps you and asks for your help when he needs it
but sometimes he gets really frustrated at not being able to do something but he's not asking you to do it and he just
follows you around like a ghost 👻
with a lil pout until you ask him if he needs help
"...." "jungwon?" "...." "...do you need help?" "yes."
but he's awesome at plating!
he took one look at your plating (completely good plating but to artist jungwon? no no no honey this won't do)
is like one of those cartoons where you only see the person's backs and like a bunch of thing flying
but when he shows you its a literal piece of art
ni-ki
the two of you are menaces in the kitchen
one of you tries to calm down and get something done and the other cackles at a meme and you're both done
heeseung or jay need to be in there to get you started or nothing's ever happening
but you're surprisingly productive after a bit
once in a while one of you will try to distract the other with something else
"LOOK AT THIS PUPPY OMG" "no, we're getting distracted! ...alright dammit show me"
"should we make bungeoppang instead?" "gasp... maybe? no, no we are finishing this!"
you end up with a pretty great tasting set of okonomiyaki though so everyone's happy

It Was You (Part Two)
A/N: Jensen and Y/n are childhood best friends. When his agent informs him that his image could use some improvement for a role, will she help him? Or will her feelings get in the way?
Read Part One Here!
A holiday (Christmas centric) Jensen x Female!Reader Best Friends to Lovers series for @spnchristmasbingo. This chapter and others will fill the square of ‘fake dating’. Un-beta’d, so all mistakes are mine. Header created by me with images from Google. Chapter word count: 3284
Series Warnings: angst-ish at times (if you squint), but mostly all the fluff.
I consider this an AU, as Jensen is single in this fic. This is completely a work of fiction, and I wouldn’t want his reality to be any different, this is purely for entertainment.
Tumblr media
Jensen returned home right around 3:30 and went to his place to grab the beer he’d promised Y/n before heading to her apartment, his mind still reeling from the conversation he’d had with Stacy.
Letting himself in, as he always did, Jensen called as soon as he stepped into the entryway, “Sweetheart? It’s me.”
When he entered, he found you lying on the couch with your arm covering your eyes, and soft sniffles were coming from your direction. You were huddled in a mess of blankets and tissues littered the floor surrounding you.
Jensen quickly set the beer on the counter and hurried to you, kneeling on the rug in front of your sofa and reaching towards you. “Hey… Y/n, what’s wrong?”
Pulling your arm away from your face, he was met with puffy, red eyes. You’d been crying.
“Oh, nothing.” You sniffed, wiping your eyes. “I just got dumped, is all.”
You quickly sat up as Jensen climbed onto your couch and pulled you into his arms. Honestly, it wasn’t that you were broken hearted in any way. Sure, Stephen had been nice and sweet, and you were sad to lose him in a way, but the tears were more for your own sorrow of no longer being with someone, which seemed to be more often than not lately.
“I just don’t understand. What is it about me that I can’t just be with someone?” You cried.
Jensen simply swayed you back and forth as you curled into his chest and crawled into his lap. After a few minutes, you wiped your eyes once again as he said, “You know, any guy would have to be crazy for letting you go.”
It was another little jab to the heart, but he wouldn’t know why. You straightened up and took a deep breath. Your head was beginning to hurt from crying, and at this point you needed that beer he brought over. Running your hands through your hair, as you sat on the edge of the couch, Jensen seemed to read your mind as he quickly got up and returned with an opened beer for you.
“Thanks, Jay.” You said, taking a long drink.
He bent down and kissed your head before retreating to your kitchen. Peering over the island, you saw him taking down pots and pans and grabbing ingredients out of your fridge.
“What are you doing?” you called, standing and bringing your beer with you, leaning on the counter and watching him move from one end to the other as he emptied the contents of his arms onto the countertop.
“Well, it may not be your mom’s recipe, but I’m going to make you some chili. I know you were probably really looking forward to it, and I’m not gonna’ to let you go hungry.”
“You don’t have to do that. I can still cook.” You objected, even though the thought was exhausting in itself.
Jensen turned to you and began to chop an onion after setting the pot on the stove, “Nope. You sit your cute butt right there and watch me work.” He replied with a wink.
Smiling, you sat at your kitchen island and tried to avoid being a back-seat chef and allowed him to take the reins. He was a great cook, so you didn’t mind letting him do so. It wasn’t long before he had you laughing and clutching your sides. Between the way he was dancing around the kitchen and cursing when he made a mess, your mind had been cleared and you were in a much better mood. The situation with Stephen sucked, sure, but it wasn’t the worst breakup you’d endured. You’d find the one, eventually.
Jensen made the cornbread and put it in the oven while the chili simmered and came to sit on the stool next to you, bumping your shoulder with his and swiping your beer to finish it.
Clearing his throat, he dared to ask, “So, do you want to talk about it?”
You grabbed the bottle back from him, if only to hold and begin peeling the label, needing to fidget with something in your hands, “It’s not a big deal, really. It’s not like I’m super upset about it. Honestly, you were right. Stephen wasn’t the most exciting person, and I don’t think we really meshed well. He was sweet and everything, but I knew it wasn’t going to work out. It’s more of the fact that I was dumped, again. If you’re not in love, it’s easy to get over. Your hearts not broken.”
“I know, sweetheart. Trust me.” Jensen said with a small sigh.
“Have you ever been heartbroken, Jay?” you asked in a whisper.
“You remember when Allie dumped me the summer before senior year?” he laughed. “You never left my side. That was more of a high school type heartbreak though. I don’t know if that was real, you know?”
“Yeah, I do. Really. I’m sad about Stephen, but not in a heartbreak type of way.”
“What about you?” Jensen asked.
“Hmm?”
“Have you, uh… have you ever had your heart broken?”
You stiffened in his hold and took a deep breath, “Once.”
“Really?” he probed. “Who was it? Was it Tyler?”
You snorted, “Tyler was in tenth grade, dude.”
“I know, but still. I’ll kick his ass. Or whoever it was.”
A nervous bubble caught in your throat. He didn’t know, and he shouldn’t. “It doesn’t matter. It’s in the past.”
“Well, again. They’re an idiot, whoever they are. Besides, you’ll always have me.”
You gave him a small smile, hoping to hide the pain that the memories brought with them.
Jensen draped his arm across your shoulders, allowing you to rest your head on his shoulder as you shook off the emotions from so long ago.
You continued, “He, um… he asked me about you, right before we had lunch. I don’t think he liked how close we are.”
Jensen pulled back a bit, an unreadable expression on his face, but you were quick to grab his hand and tug him back towards you, lacing your fingers with his, “but, I don’t care. I don’t want to be with anyone who can’t respect this friendship. We’ve been through everything together.”
With that, he smiled and squeezed your hand, bending his elbow so that you were almost in a headlock and he could plant his lips to your forehead. He lingered for a moment as you both sat, tangled in each other’s arms. He released your hand and ran his soothingly along your side before getting up to stir the chili.
It was true. You didn’t care who came along, Jensen would always be your best friend.
The two of you ate seated on your oversized sofa and watched Elf, a favorite of yours and Jensen’s, even if he wouldn’t admit it. Jensen was right – it wasn’t your mom’s chili, but it was damn good. Grabbing the last spoonful, you couldn’t help the moan that escaped as it landed on your tongue. Jensen’s eyes snapped to you, the sound making something within him stir.
Dropping the spoon in your bowl, you set it on the coffee table and leaned back, satisfied.
“That was amazing, dude. Remind me to tell you to cook more often.”
He laughed, grabbing your bowl and his and setting to work at the sink to load the dishwasher. You got up to help, but he snapped his fingers, making you sit back down with a grin.
“So, how was your meeting with Stacy today?”
He wiped his hands on the dish towel that hung on his shoulder after cutting of the sink, “Oh, uh…” he paused, looking down and busying himself with starting the dishwasher. “She brought me a script. It’s a different character, to say the least. A single dad who meets a small-town woman when he moves to a new place with his kids.”
“That’s interesting. What’d you think of it?”
“She’s going to send in my stuff, and we’ll see how that goes. I wouldn’t mind getting it… could be pretty cool.” He shrugged casually, but something in his expression told you he really wanted it. “It’s a really competitive part, though. A lot of interest, so she wants me to keep up my image.”
He returned to join you on the couch with a fresh beer, casually draping his legs across your lap as you asked, “What does that mean? You’ve got a good image. You’re not scandalous or anything.”
“Yeah, but I’m a ‘bachelor’.” He replied, using air quotes to indicate that Stacy used that term specifically. “She thinks I’d have a better shot at the part if I were in a relationship or something. Even threw around the idea of just finding someone to help me out for a bit so I could look like a committed man.” He huffed out a laugh at the ridiculous request.
You’d heard of some of the lengths agents would go through, but you could never imagine being asked to do something like that, even from your own. “You mean, like… a fake girlfriend?”
Leaning his back against the armrest, he stretched out as you scooted closer, with his knees coming to rest over your thighs and his legs extended as you both got comfortable. “Apparently, but I told her it was a bad idea. I wouldn’t feel right finding some random girl and selling a rouse.”
You nodded, your hands casually laying over his strong thighs, “That doesn’t sound like you, so yeah… I get how that could be hard.”
He sighed heavily before sipping his beer once more. Gruffly, he seemingly put the issue to bed for the time being, “Yeah, well you know how it is. If I get it, cool. If not, oh well. I’ll just keep up my appearances. Besides, I get to go to work with you every day now. Wouldn’t want to change that, right?” he nudged you with his foot, grinning at you.
Jensen had encouraged you to apply for a position on the show in season two and you were lucky enough to be considered. He’d been so excited that he’d flown you up from your shared hometown. Prior to that, you hadn’t seen him much since he moved to L.A. shortly after you’d both turned 18. The haunting memory of him driving away crept up as you studied his face, looking very much like the boy you’d always known but also the man he’d grown into. It’s in the past, you thought to yourself as you quelled the small amount of lingering feelings of that day.
You simply smiled back, finding yourself a bit lost in thought.
“Hey.” Jensen said, grabbing your attention. “You okay?”
“Oh, yeah. Just thinking.”
“About the Stephen thing?”
You realized in that moment that you hadn’t thought about Stephen since Jensen started cooking dinner. He’d done a great job of distracting you, but you also didn’t want him to know what you were thinking about. “Actually, no. I think you helped out a bit with that.”
A proud expression donned his features as he puffed his chest, obviously pleased that he completed his mission successfully. You chatted a bit more until you grabbed your tablet to do a bit of shopping and you both fell into a comfortable silence. You turned away to hide the item that you’d added to your cart, seeing as it was a little something extra for him. Pleased with the items you’d found for your family back home, and that they’d get to you before your flight in a few weeks, you placed your tablet on the coffee table before snuggling into Jensen’s side, who was enthralled with the animated Rudolph film playing on your TV. He was always a sucker for Christmas movies, though he might not confess that to anyone but you.
The stress of the day began to wear on you, and you soon found yourself drifting off. Between your comfy pajamas and Jensen’s heartbeat in your ear, you fell into a peaceful sleep.
You awoke the next morning to the sunrise shining faintly through the curtains adorning your living room windows, confused to find yourself in the room. With a sleepy mind, you slowly shifted as you began to stretch your limbs but froze slightly when you met resistance. Eyes widening, still heavy with sleep, you came to find yourself snuggled against Jensen’s chest with the blanket from the back of your couch draped over you both. Your back was towards the cushions as you lay on your side, tucked beneath his shoulder and curled into his body with legs tangled beneath you. He was on his back, his one arm securely wrapped around your shoulders and the other resting on his midsection and your forearm that was enclosed around his trim waist. As gently as you could, afraid he might wake, you tilted your head to gaze at his sleeping form. His face was peaceful as he slept, his mouth slightly open and his chest rising and falling in a soft rhythm.
Content to savor the moment, you allowed yourself to revel in the feeling of being in his arms and nestled a bit further into the blankets, finding the chill of the morning slightly eased from his body heat.
You awoke again a bit later, when the sun had settled high in the sky, roused by something feathering across your cheek.
Jensen’s velvety voice jogged your sleepy mind, “Y/n? You awake?”
His thumb was slowly caressing across the apples of your cheekbones, the touch sending a shockwave through every inch of your body and straight to your chest. When you opened your eyes, he was peering down at you still in his arms with so much emotion behind his eyes that you couldn’t quite read. He smiled warmly, his dimples, freckles, and crinkles all present in the light. He was looking at you with such adoration that it made your heart skip a beat.
“Morning, sweetheart.” Came his usual greeting, but you couldn’t help but shiver at the gruffness and tone, stealing a glance at his lips. “Did you sleep well?”
Tearing your eyes from his face, you stretched slightly, “I did. Very well, actually. You’re a nice pillow.”
He chuckled, his chest rumbling beneath your head, “Yeah, I guess I am. I was gonna move you to bed, but I didn’t want to wake you. And I’ll say, I was quite comfy myself.”
Jensen ran his hands up and down your side and back, almost as if it was second nature to do so, before he moved to sit up. You did so first, giving him the space to swing his legs over the edge of the couch and set to work at the coffee maker. Taking a moment to head to the bathroom and brush your teeth, you smiled finding him with your mug already at the windowsill.
“Thank you.” You said, picking it up and taking a seat across from him.
“Thank you for the sleepover.” He grinned, toasting towards you with his own cup.
After a few moments of chit chat about how happy you both were that the snow had lasted, you made you both breakfast and ate together at your kitchen island.
“So, what are you going to do about Stacy’s idea? Have you given it any more thought?” you asked around a mouthful of bacon.
“Actually, um… yeah. I have.”
You’d be lying if you said you weren’t a little disappointed that it sounded like he was considering her proposition of getting a girlfriend to help his image, but urged him continue none-the-less, “Oh, yeah?”
“I was—I was actually thinking about it this morning. What if—and you can totally say no—but what if you were my pretend girlfriend?” he proposed, looking toward you nervously.
Nearly choking on your breakfast, sure you’d heard him incorrectly, you stared at him in surprise, “Are you serious, Jay?”
“Well, it was just a thought, you know. The fans think I’m with you, anyway, considering they know how close we are and have always been. You’re all over my social media already and I get a ton of comments about you all the time. It would be a cute story, but I totally understand if that’s pushing things too far.”
Still in shock, you hardly registered the sip of coffee you’d taken before putting your mug back on the counter. Your arms and legs felt like Jell-O as he looked at you expectantly.
“Are you sure I’m the type of girl Stacy had in mind? I mean, you’re you ya know. I’m hardly a celebrity or anything and I don’t have a ton of clout. What would the story be?”
He perked up a bit, seemingly please that you were asking more questions. Maybe that meant you were considering it. “It might be good to play the childhood sweetheart angle, but this would only ever happen if you were 100% okay with it. I’d never do anything that would make you uncomfortable in any way. Then, maybe after a few months, we decide to just stay friends. We wouldn’t even need to necessarily announce it to the world or anything but getting people to talk wouldn’t hurt and we just wouldn’t correct the rumors.” He looked into your eyes and took your hand in his, “Y/n, I swear… if it’s too much you can call me crazy and it’ll be no hard feelings whatsoever. No job or role would ever be enough that I’d jeopardize anything with you. It was really just an idea that I had, and it can be shot back out into the abyss and we can forget it ever came up.”
You pulled your bottom lip between your teeth, considering his proposition. It wouldn’t be so hard to fake it for a bit, would it? It’s not like much would change. You were already always together, and yeah, people had been speculating about the two of you for years, especially when you started working on set. “What about our families, Jay? What would we tell them?”
He considered your point for a moment. Both sets of parents had been friends for more than thirty years and would no doubt be aware of the rumors once they started, but again that wasn’t anything new. They’d been answering the same questions about you as a pair since you were kids. “We can tell them we’re together, or not. It would be whatever you choose, but we can always keep things vague for a while. We can even chat with Stacy together and see what would be needed, but it’s all totally up to you.”
Running it through your mind in that moment, it didn’t seem much different than what you and Jensen already were – best friends that everyone, everyone speculated about. Giving Jensen the opportunity to appear he had settled down wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, would it?
With a hint of a smile, you nodded, “Okay.”
“Wait, really?” he said, an obvious shock written across his face.
“Yeah… I mean it’s like you said. Not much would be different anyways, right? We can meet with Stacy, for sure, but it’s alright with me.”
He pulled you in for a tight hug, “You’re seriously the best, sweetheart. Don’t worry, I’m going to treat you like the queen you are for as long as this goes on. You’re gonna get spoiled.”
“Well, then…” you teased, patting his back as he kept you in his arms, “At least I’m getting something out of the deal.”
“Oh, trust me, Y/n. I’ll make sure it’s worth your while.”
Suddenly, you thought maybe this wasn’t the best idea after all, given the way your blood began to rush as he shot you a wink.
To be continued...

Happy Sunday friends!  So, we are told that spring will arrive early this year - who's with me on the excitement for that???  Part of my excitement is the warmer temps but a BIG part of my excitement is getting started building my new gardening area.  I've got plans people, and I know it will be a struggle to get my better half to help with some of it but I'm determined to do just that.  After my win on the cattle panel trellis last year I'm feeling confident in my persuasion abilities.  I'll share more about garden plans in the next month or so.
Tumblr media
We received a winter storm Thursday and Friday.  It started with snow, then switched to sleet and rain, then back to snow.  The snowfall at the end, on Friday, was stunning.  It was wet and heavy and stuck to the trees so beautifully.  The temps quickly dropped below freezing so the trees remained adorned with their white coating.  I walked out of the house Saturday morning to let Oliver out and spent a couple of (very cold) minutes just reveling in the beauty of it all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saturday is food prep day so an hour or so was devoted to that.  I try to get my salad ingredients and anything else that makes sense to do, prepped on Saturdays.  I also prep all of our Sunday meals since we have the farmer's market that day.  I roasted some sweet potatoes, mushrooms, and beets for a delicious addition to this week's salads.  As I was prepping the beets my husband walked through and his eyes lit up.  He asked what the beets were for and I said for my salad.  He looked at me, then the beets, then me and said "well, I like beets".  I laughed.  I said I would put some aside for him to eat without salad, which made him quite happy.  I don't serve beets as much as I should because they are a pain - red getting all over everything.  I like to bake them and then slip the skins off and cut them up.  It's a bit messy but not too terribly bad.  I never was a fan of beets but I've incorporated them into my life because they are so good nutritionally.  I still don't love or crave them, but I don't mind them anymore.
Tumblr media
I also prepped all our products on Saturday, cleaned and packed eggs, did a light cleaning in the house, worked on taxes (yuck!), and listened to the first day of a (free) health/weight loss summit I signed up for.  I signed up specifically for 3 speakers which includes one who claims to have a way to break the craving for sugar (seminar is on Wednesday).  I've pretty much broken my craving but sugar is a serious pull for me so any additional tips and tricks I learn would be great!  (not an affiliate link and a heads up that it is plant-based focused - just sharing if you are interested)

Reading - Breasts: The Owner's Manual, by Dr. Kristi Funk (affiliate link).  So I've had this book for about a year I think.  I picked it up at a flea market.  I've never read it until this week when I devoured it over the course of 2 days.  Why?  Because it scared the heck out of me.  In a good way.  (if there is a good way?)  Here's the thing - I knew the risk for breast cancer increases with age and I knew that I have a couple additional factors making my risk a bit higher, but I did not know the specifics, and reading it made it very real.  VERY real.  For instance, did you know that if you are between the ages of 50 and 59 your chances of breast cancer are 1 in 43??  If you're in your sixties, your chances are 1 in 29.  And that's just the risk due to age, it's before additional potential risk factors are factored in.  Ugh... It was actually the perfect timing for me to read it because I was struggling just a bit with my fairly new plant-based lifestyle.  Every once in a while I go through just wanting to be able to eat "normal" - meaning, I'd like to just go out to dinner and not have to worry about whether or not a restaurant is going to have something I can eat.  Anywhoo, reading this is keeping me on course with my new "normal" because Dr. Funk gives the following details as part of her book: eating a plant-based whole food diet + regular exercise + maintaining a healthy weight = reduces your risk by 80% (for women 50 and older, which is a group I'm newly part of). Plant-based eating aside, I highly recommend this book for all women of any age to read.  It's very well written and full of information on breast health and details her recommendations for lifestyle changes (including info on what to add to your daily diet, plastics, cosmetics, deodorant, radiation, myths, risk factors, stress, etc.), the why's behind it all.  She also includes quite a bit of information for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer.
Learning - about my own personality.  So I decided, on a whim of course, to take the (free) Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test here.  I really didn't think much about it as I clicked through the test.  Until I read the results...… huh, I thought.  Honestly, I'd never thought of myself as an advocate but that is indeed who I am.  After reading the turbulent versus assertive I am definitely turbulent, definitely an introvert and the information under diplomat and constant improvement are fairly spot on as well.  Interestingly, good or bad, for the most part it was me in a nutshell.  Who would of thought?  It was very funny reading that friends and colleagues often believe this personality type is a quiet extrovert, not understanding that instead it's a true introvert.  I've tried to explain this to others who just didn't believe me.  Have you taken this test?  I would love to hear your thoughts.

Cooking - we've been loving taquitos in the air fryer for lunches.  For mine, I take some refried beans and chopped canned chilies, roll a bit up in a corn tortilla, and throw them in for 6 minutes.  For Jay's I use pre-cooked ground beef, cheese, and canned green chilies.  Crispy, chewy, and delicious!  I make a guacamole dip and a side salad to go with it.  I could honestly eat this everyday but the man says he needs variety so I've been making it only a few days a week.  Saturday was one of those days.  For dinner on Saturday it was one of Jay's favorites - seared scallops, gnocchi with sage butter, and steamed broccoli,  and a big old delicious raw salad with balsamic dressing for me. Sunday's are usually oatmeal for me for breakfast, and an egg sandwich and air fryer hash browns for Jay.  For lunch I brought veggies with hummus dip and avocado toast.  Jay gets a burger at the farmer's market.  I bring fruit and (healthier) cookie dough balls for a snack.  The cookie dough balls I make up as a large batch and store in the freezer so they are easy to grab and go Sunday mornings.  Dinner for Jay tonight is slow-cooker Mississippi pot roast with potatoes and beets, and a big salad with veggies, beans, seeds, & quinoa for me.

Planning - a few outings to local museums or other attractions.  We've talked about going and have only been to a handful.  We typically only think about visiting local sites in the summer, when we get too busy, so I'm trying to get the husband to go visit a few before winter is over.  If I have to, I'll entice him with lunch at his favorite local restaurant (that also offers vegan options for me - hooray!!)...... A girls gotta have a few tricks in her back pocket, you know? Link Love: Take Back Your Online Privacy (prjvs) - an interesting read. Online privacy, or all privacy for that matter, no longer exists it seems. Most Of Your Stuff Is Worthless: 3 Things You Should Be Doing NOW To Reduce What You Own (dallas moms collective) - this is so spot on.  After going through my MIL's home when she passed it was a relief that my mom had pared her stuff down to what she really loved. The False Promise Of Morning Routines (atlantic) - I, personally, feel better having a morning routine, but I get that it isn't for everyone. 3 Kids. 2 Paychecks. No Home. (California sunday magazine) - eye opening. Say What You Mean To Say (modern mrs darcy) - because we don't get do-overs in life, a lesson to learn.  p.s. while you're there, if you're a reader, check out some of her book recommendations. How was your weekend?  Did you read or do anything interesting?

ACORN FEATHER NOSH DINNER SERIES #4
Acorn Feather Nosh Dinner Series #4 took place on the evening of Saturday, October 21, 2017. Rain was coming down in great gusts, so the festivities all took place inside. Er… except for the Weber kettle-bbq I had fired up in the open garage, which was used to roast green chilis and late-season tomatoes. (It was also meant to roast beets, which it did, before i walked away and forgot about them, and they turned to charcoal.) I invited almost all of the same list as attended one or the other of Dinner Series' 1-3, and the off-shoot cheese cocktail party with Sasha. Surprisingly, there were very few declines; out of 24 invites we had 18 in attendance, although one had to make a hasty retreat early, having lost a crown in one of the downright Paleolithic ribs we we all noshing on.
Seriously, the ribs were Fred Flintstone huge, and unanimously the hit of the night. Heck, they even had a longtime vegan nibbling a few bites. I paid my son Carter $20 to bus tables and help on dish duty, and he did pretty great, when he wasn’t running around battling my sister’s boyfriend Jay. I think the rain made for a better party, as it kept everyone in close proximity. I like that intimacy. Later on, after the bulk of the guests had gone home, we were discussing the cost of doing these dinner parties and Sarah K. brought up the idea that’s been lingering in my own head, to charge, say $20 and a bottle of wine, OR, bring a food dish and a bottle of wine. I still paid out for this party, but much less so than meals past, when i cooked everything on the menu. Food for thought. .... [Also note, the pork butt is a pretty good value, compared to say, beef bavette steaks or lamb chops.]
My main contribution was an 8 lb pork butt, cooked Carnitas style, sourced from Laurelhurst Market & Butcher Shop. It turned out great, and I ate leftovers for a week. A late-game addition was glazed carrots cooked in a ginger ale reduction, sourced from an Eastern European guy out of the back of his car in the Woodlawn neighborhood. .... Other food items follow, in no particular order. I’m almost certainly missing something. I failed entirely at noting the beverages which were brought and consumed. Mostly wine. Meanwhile, that list: .... - Rogue Creamery Smokey Blue Cheese. (CA.) - Assorted charcuterie from Laurelhurst Market & Butcher Shop. - Mixed olives and Marcona almonds from New Seasons. - Steve’s smoked beef back ribs, sourced at Old Salt Marketplace w/two house-made hot sauces: BBQ Sauce #1: Hoisin base, w/roasted garlic, ginger BBQ Sauce #2: tomato base w/mustard, horse radish - Salmon dip and grilled veggies from Flying Coyote Farm by Carol & David. - Fire-roasted tomato & green chili chunky salsa. Tomatoes mine, peppers from my sister Nicky. - Garlic bread. Three loaves of Piccolo Como from Grand Central Bakery. - Chanterelle/bacon risotto w/parmesan, mushrooms hand-picked by Tim. - Cauliflower/béchamel casserole by John. - Grilled seasonal veggies by Heather and Jeff. - Chocolate olive-oil cake by Heather and Jeff - Chocolate chip, butterscotch, coconut cookies by Steve.
[All pictures mine, except for that one of the gorgeous beef ribs in the smoker, taken by Steve. Thanks Steve!]

When you talk about the best cuisine in the world, Thai food is right up there. Along with Italian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Mexican, Thai food makes it to the top 10 list of popular cuisines in the world. However, most of the popular dishes include meat, often pork, chicken, beef or seafood, as an ingredient. Because of this, if you’re vegan or looking for vegetarian Thai food you need to know and plan about it during your trip to Thailand. I have got some good news for you. You can still take a foodie trip to the ‘Land of Smiles’ and feast on some delicious vegetarian dishes.
The Thai combination of herbs and spices create ‘to die for meals’ that are spicy, sour, sweet, crunchy and chewy. That’s why a lot of people love Thai dishes because of all the flavors it presents in one meal.
Read to know more about the vegetarian Thai food dishes you must try during your trip, the best places to get them and how to order the food.
Remember to travel to Thailand from India you’ll need a Thailand eVoa from India.
Irresistible Vegetarian Thai Food Dishes To Try
1. Som Tam (Spicy Green Thai Papaya Salad)
Som Tam Green Papaya salad spicy and delicious. Image Shutterstock
This is one of the popular Thai vegetarian dishes you can try in Thailand. The mouthwatering meal is prepared using, galangal, juicy tomatoes, carrots, shredded green (unripe) papaya, lime and tamarind juice, long beans, palm sugar, and peanuts. The ingredients give the meal a sweet, spicy, salty, sour and savory flavor. The salad usually has fish sauce and prawns included, so when ordering you make sure to say you’re vegetarian/vegan for these ingredients not to be included in your dish.
2. Pad Thai (Stir-Fried Rice Noodles)
Pad Thai the stir-fried rice noodles with tofu and mixed vegetables. Image Shutterstock
A vegetarian Thai food cuisine menu cannot miss this dish. It is one of the national dishes in Thailand and is also very popular among tourists. Mostly it is cooked with eggs, bean sprouts, tasty tofu cubes, onions, lime juice, groundnuts, and shrimp or chicken. However, you can ask the chef to omit the meat products. The famous Thai dish is just as tasty without them. Pad Thai is sold everywhere in Thailand from five-star restaurants to the street food stalls.
3. Pad Phuk Tong (Stir-Fried Pumpkin)
Pad Phuk Tong – the stir-fried Pumpkin. Image Shutterstock
You’re probably used to seeing pumpkins begin carved out during Halloween. In Thailand they have a much better use for pumpkins, they use them to create this vegetarian dish. Other ingredients used to prepare Pad Phuk tong are spring onions, coriander leaves, sugar, garlic, water, white pepper, celery, and soy sauce. This is one of the best vegetarian dishes in Thailand and you should try it with Thai fragrant rice.
4. Pak Boong (Morning Glory)
Pak Boong the stir-fried Chinese Morning Glory or Water Spinach. Image Shutterstock
This is one of the healthiest foods you can take while you’re on vacation in Thailand. The delicious salad which is salty, crunchy, spicy and sour has soy sauce, chilies, soybean paste, and garlic. Oyster sauce is often added when preparing morning glory, so again tell the cook making it not to include the sauce to keep it vegetarian.
5. Pad Pak (Fried Vegetables)
As the name suggests this is an all-vegetable Thai dish. Some of the vegetables used to make it are mushrooms, cauliflower, and broccoli. When you go to a food stall you’ll see the different vegetables used to prepare it displayed and you can choose what you want or don’t want in your Pad Pak.
6. Vegetable Noodle Soup with Lemongrass
Should you visit Thailand during the cold season this noodle soup is what you should have to keep you warm on a chilly day. It is known to be a good remedy for a cold or flu and is also said to help boost your mood. To make it lemongrass, several vegetables, thin rice noodles or noodles of your choice, coconut milk is needed. The soup is quite filling and can be had as a meal on its own at any time of the day.
7. Vegetarian Thai Green Curry
Thai cuisine has a wide variety of curries with Panang and Massaman curry being some of the most popular ones. A lot of curries are made with meat but this can be removed in your order. The Thai green vegetable curry, for example, has meat in it but you can substitute this with tofu or wheat gluten. Whichever you choose will be mixed with kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, galangal, coriander seeds, green chilies, and coconut milk.
8. Pad Phak (Stir-Fried Vegetables)
This is another all vegetable meal that will ensure you stick to your vegetarian diet. It will also leave you full but wanting for more. Ingredients required to make this meal are vegetable oil, coarsely chopped garlic, broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, shallots, carrots, bell pepper, snow peas, mushrooms, soy sauce, spinach leaves, Thai pepper powder, and lime juice. These are all mixed together to give your food several different flavors. You can enjoy this meal with Thai jasmine rice.
9. Tao Hoo Song Kreung (Mixed Tofu)
If you don’t know tofu, it is soya milk coagulated to create curd. It is an excellent source of protein, iron, and calcium for vegans and vegetarians. To make this Thai meal different types of tofu are fried with the basil to make a tasty stir fry. Like most of the other dishes, we have talked about mixed tofu is usually served with some steaming rice.
10. Laab Jay (Vegan Laab)
In Thailand, most Laab salads have chicken, beef or pork but you can have a vegetarian version. Simply replace the meat with tofu and you have an amazing meal. The tofu is mixed with lime juice, Thai roasted chili paste, green onions, coriander leaves, roast rice powder, lemongrass, etc. The spices used to make this meal make it very hot and spicy, so if you don’t like spicy food ask for it to be prepared moderate or mild.
11. Thai fruit
Fruits in the streets of Thailand
If you have had enough of Thai vegetable meals on your trip switch to some fruits. Fruits are very healthy and in Thailand, you can try some of their rare fruits. You can but a bag of fruits from street vendors for 40 Baht (Baht is the official currency of Thailand), which is about $1. Mangosteen, rambutans, banana, durian, pomelos, rose apples, dragon fruit, lychee, coconut, and guava are some of the fruits you’ll find available at the fruit stand on the street corners of Bangkok.

There are so many more vegetarian Thai food dishes you can try while in Thailand. I’ll just list other options you can taste without going into details about them.
Heavenly pineapple fried rice. This is rice fried with cashews, peas, curry-flavored sauce and chunks of pineapple.
Thai Vegetable Spring Rolls. These make for a good snack as you travel around Thailand sightseeing. Stuffed with vegetables try them with sweet and sour or hot sauce.
Thai Mushroom Fried Rice
Khao Niew Ma Muang (mango sticky rice)
Thai Peanut Noodles
Chao Kuai. This is a Thai dessert prepared using sun-dried stems and leaves of the Chinese Mesona plant which are boiled to make a jelly.
Top Vegetarian Thai food Restaurants in Thailand
Roasted Bananas from streets of Bangkok
You can get Thai vegetarian dishes in most cities in Thailand you go visit. However, to make it easier for you here are some of my favorite vegetarian restaurants you can visit around Thailand:
1. Broccoli Revolution, Bangkok
This vegetarian Thai food restaurant located in downtown Sukhumvit was first opened in Bangkok in 2015. It now has two locations. It not only serves vegetarian dishes from around the world but also has a juice bar, which makes some of the best organic juices you’ll ever drink.
The Restaurant is open daily from 7 am to 10 pm so you can head on there for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I recommend you try the pad thai, mushrooms and basil on rice and green curry. This will cost you about 150-200 baht.
2. Greenlight Cafe & Bar, Koh Samui
This is not an exclusively vegetarian restaurant but their menu includes a wide range of Thai vegetable meals you will enjoy. Most of the ingredients used to make their dishes are organic and come from their kitchen garden.
It is open throughout the week 8 am to 10 pm. You can find the Greenlight Cafe & Bar at 3/28 Moo 1, Fisherman’s Village, Bophut, Koh Samui.
3. Atsumi Raw Cafe
This restaurant located in Rawai, Phuket is well known for its raw vegan and raw vegetarian menu. It also serves an amazing selection of smoothies, desserts, and juices made from organic ingredients. Going through its menu you may be overwhelmed by the large number of vegetarian dishes to choose from. However, the tom ka soup and zucchini pepper wrap will blow you away.  Atsumi Raw Cafe is open from 9 am to 8:30 pm daily. The last order taken is at 8 pm.
4. Tien Sien
At this simple Thai restaurant, you get to choose what you want to eat as the food is served buffet style. You simply get in line and point out what you want on your plate. The restaurant has very friendly staff who will explain to you what the different Thai meals displayed on the counter are.
Meals are affordable and for about 70 Baht you can enjoy a large plate of vegan food. Situated at 439 Khwaeng Silom, Khet Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500, this restaurant is closed on Sundays but from Monday to Saturday it is open from 7:30 am to 3 pm.
5. May Veggie Home, Bangkok
Their motto is ‘Tasty vegetables amazing dishes. When you’re here, you’re family!’
The all-vegetarian restaurant food has got many tourists taking and it has been dubbed by some as the best vegetarian restaurant in Bangkok. Looking at the reviews made by those who have been there that assertion could be true.
If you visit May Veggie Home try the Tom Kha mushroom soup, yellow curry with tofu, pad thai tofu or Penang curry with tofu, I guarantee you will love these meals. For dessert, there are several vegan cakes and ice creams you can order.
The restaurant is at 8/3 (Asoke-Sukhumvit Intersection) Ratchadaphisek Road, Khlong Toei, Bangkok. It is open from 11 am–10 pm daily.
6. Ethos Vegetarian
If you’re looking for a relaxing place to grab a late supper after a long day of touring in Bangkok this is the place to go to. Located near Khaosan Night Market, the market that never sleeps, Ethos Vegetarian is open until a few minutes to midnight every day. So you can pass by here for a meal before heading back to your hotel to call it a day.
Try the yellow curry with potatoes, spicy glass noodle soup, vegetarian Thai spring rolls and don’t forget to ask for some of their fresh fruit juices.
7. May Kaidee
This restaurant has two locations, one in Bangkok and another in Chiang Mai. Both serve mouthwatering vegan and vegetarian meals, such as tofu green curry, banana flower salad, Pad Tai, and som tom.
If you would like to learn how to make Thai food, to cook for yourself or family once you get back home, May Kaidee offers cooking classes you can attend throughout the year. There are open every day from 9 am to 10 pm.

Conclusion
As you can see there are many Thai vegetarian dishes and places that sell these meals in Thailand. So you don’t have to worry that you won’t stick to your vegan or vegetarian diet when you travel to the country.
However to be on the safe side always tell the chef or waiter serving you that you are vegetarian or vegan. You can do that in Thai by saying “gin jay.”  Because most restaurants prepare your food after you make an order. The chef or waiter will take extra precaution not to add meat to your meal.
For a vegan to ensure no fish sauce or oyster sauce is added to your meal say “mai ow nam bplaa” or “mai ow nam man hoy” This way you get no meat or animal products in your meal.
Let us know which of these meals you have tasted/tried during your trip. How was it? We would also like to taste them if we haven’t already done so on our next trip to Thailand.

Because it amuses me, I’ve decided to assemble list of Weird Al polka songs and mark what songs I’ve heard along with notations of which ones are actually in my collection. Skipping Hot Rocks Polka from UHF (yeah, I have heard all of those, and I have some of them in my collection) and Bohemian Polka (is there a human being who hasn’t heard Bohemian Rhapsody, and of course it’s in my collection.)
Songs in bold I’ve heard at some point. Songs and artists in italics I literally know nothing about.
Just because something is in my collection doesn’t mean I love it (though more often than not I do) and just because something ISN’T doesn’t mean I don’t like it.
Polkas on 45 from “Weird Al” Yankovic in 3-D (1984):
"Jocko Homo" by Devo (In My Collection) "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple (In My Collection) "Sex (I'm A...)" by Berlin (In My Collection) "Hey Jude" by The Beatles (In My Collection) "L.A. Angry White Boy Polka from Poodle Hat (2003) (I wasn’t listening much to the radio at this point, and some of these songs I’m pretty sure I heard a good while after they were in the Polka, I either don’t care about or don’t like most of these songs.):

"The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Polkarama! from Straight Outta Lynwood (2006): (We’re at the point where unless I just randomly caught it on the radio or someone I knew played it, I was pretty over popular music and was digging through other musical interests)

I know I’ve heard some Black Eyed Peas in the past) "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand (In My Collection) "Beverly Hills" by Weezer (In My Collection) "Speed of Sound" by Coldplay "Float On" by Modest Mouse "Feel Good Inc." by Gorillaz featuring De La Soul  (In My Collection) "Don't Cha" by Pussycat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes "Somebody Told Me" by The Killers (In My Collection) "Slither" by Velvet Revolver "Candy Shop" by 50 Cent featuring Olivia "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop Dogg featuring Pharrell "Pon de Replay" by Rihanna (I feel like Umbrella is the only Rihanna song I’ve heard) "Gold Digger" by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx
Polka Face from Alpocalypse (2011):
“Poker Face” by Lady Gaga “Womanizer” by Britney Spears “Right Round” by Flo Rida ft. Ke$ha (the first time I heard this in the polka I thought Al was suddenly doing Dead or Alive) “Day 'n' Nite” by Kid Cudi “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum (In My Collection, weirdly enough) “Baby” by Justin Bieber ft. Ludacris “So What” by Pink (I’m surprised I don’t have more Pink) “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry “Fireflies” by Owl City (I know nothing about this band but the name sounds gothic, which probably means it’s pop) “Blame It” by Jamie Foxx ft. T-Pain “Replay” by Iyaz “Down” by Jay Sean ft. Lil Wayne “Break Your Heart” by Taio Cruz ft. Ludacris “Tik Tok” by Kesha (she’s on the periphery on the sort of thing I’m into so I checked her out and determined I wasn’t feeling it)
Now That’s What I Call Polka! from Mandatory Fun (2014): (To say that at this point I’ve long since abandoned any way to check out music that isn’t a deliberate choice is almost an understatement but at the same time I’ve become a lot more musically opened minded in recent years AND I’ve been on tumblr which has made me more vaguely aware of stuff younger folks are into):
“Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus (checked out re: controversy iirc) “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People (In My Collection) “Best Song Ever” by One Direction (I legit was like, well hey maybe One Direction is surprisingly good since so many people on Tumblr love them... nope. Sounded like every boy band in the history of ever as far as I could tell.) “Gangnam Style” by Psy (Too heavily referenced everywhere to have not checked it out) “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen (see above re: references) “Scream & Shout” by will.i.am feat. Britney Spears “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye feat. Kimbra (I legit love this song because it sounds like Peter Gabriel, I checked out Gotye without having any idea he had a hit song though) “Timber” by Pitbull feat. Kesha “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz (Yeah, I’ve BEEN to the Value Village that has since closed on Capitol Hill in Seattle but I’ve never heard the song or seen the video in which it is featured... in fact I’ve never heard any Macklemore, despite Seattleite status) “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams
I think the polkas from recent years come out better than I thought, though I literally only have two songs in my collection from the last one so...

A clementine, several small carrots, a chapter of The Body Keeps The Score (as ever with IFS stuff, very interesting and occasionally bordering on seeming potentially useful or insightful, but exhaustively rigid, frequently overstated, and relentlessly jargon heavy), two episodes to Jay & Miles (some stuff with The New Mutants exploring coming of age through grief & aliens that I think was very formative for the episodes of Buffy dealing with Joyce’s death, both The Body and the story right after, and a Hawk Talk on sitcoms that included a shoutout to a Walmart [stand-in] set sitcom the is explicitly pro unions, and to We Are Lady Parts although the latter not in much detail), a can of coke, paprika french fries, a steak pie wrap (ft. salted butter, Laughing Cow, Philadelphia, table salt, ground black pepper, chopped spring onions & spinach, melted plastic cheese, and [Bull’s Eye] Carolina Reaper Extra Hot Sauce), Doctor Who (The Aztecs; 4 episodes [10/10]; Produced by Verity Lambert, written by John Lucarotti script edited by David Whittaker, if this had to be rewritten by a major figure in modern Doctor Who [with an understanding that it really oughtn’t be handled by any white British writer] I would most like to see it adapted by RTD), Doctor Who (The Sensorites), beef noodles (ft. chopped spring onion & spinach, ground black pepper, diced red pepper, and [Bull’s Eye] Carolina Reaper Extra Hot Sauce), sleep.

Newman, script edited by David Whittaker, if this had to be rewritten by a major figure in modern Doctor Who I would most like to see it adapted by Steven Moffat), two sausage rolls, sleep.
A cup of tea, a clementine, a bowl of rescued leftover chips (dusted with table salt & ground black pepper, topped with Hellman’s mayonnaise, chopped spring onions, diced red pepper, [Bull’s Eye] Carolina Reaper Extra Hot Sauce, and spinach), a grilled prefab ASDA beef burrito (with added salted butter), an ASDA ‘Halloween Beastie’ prefab double beef burger and cheese sauce portion (with added chopped spring onions, diced cherry plum tomatoes, and potato waffles), half of an episode of ONRaC (further on the church of the eccentric televangelist and his mobster wife… while the first episode was a little ‘Ross & Carrie by numbers’ this starts to get delightfully weird as it goes on), a garlic & herb chicken Kiev portion wrap (ft. salted butter, Philadelphia, table salt, ground black pepper, chopped spring onions & spinach, and leftover Double Dragon takeaway salt & pepper chicken chilies), four slices of toast (one ft.
