I just realised that Jason/Thalia largely parallel Nico/Bianca and now I'm sobbing. Remember in the ending of lost hero? Jason was anxiously waiting for Thalia to join the chb meeting saying "She promised, after all" he sounded just like a little Nico saying "where is my sister?"

Jason Grace , the high and mighty leader of Rome becoming such a soft lil bro to Thalia is just so heartbreaking and adorable :( the moment he saw her face he immediately knew she was family, he took her hand when she offered it to him with zero hesitation and hugged her, was enraged after she was turned into an ice statue, and was deeply pained when he found out she had a whole new life without him and that she most likely won't need him anymore but all the while still desperately wanting her to be there with him in chb, for moral support. Gosh he's such a puppy :')

Thalia was also SUCH a soft older sis too, there's this passage in the lost hero where jason went "But we've barely talked" bc she said she had to leave and her eyes soften at his kicked-puppy face. Also the only thing that calmed Thalia from blowing up at juno was jason grabbing her hand and calling her "sis" UGHH THEY ARE BOTH SO SOFT

i’m going in depth about each of the first 10 cabins, how i feel their portrayed through the series, and powers i feel they should have. starting with zues and ending with aphrodite (minus hera and artemis)

zues: i think that the zues cabin had really good representation with jason and thalia (two pretty main characters with their respective series’s) in my opinion they were seen as a power cabin, extremely strong, a leader when fit, very powerful over others (intimidation) and just powerful in general. they should have defined had more powers that just naturally happened and they didn’t have to make happen, like static electricity is much stronger than it should be, sparks when their very happy (that one’s my personal favorite), they become attracted to people a lot easier than other people, but they should have some extremely strong powers sense zues is literally the god of olympus, like they (thalia in this case sense her powers are more lightning based) can summon bolts of lightning that are strong enough to set fire in a 5 ft radius, or they (jason) can make the wind form a tornado that can rip houses to shreds.

poseidon, i skipped hera cuz she has no kids: poseidon has very, very good representation in the series (the main character) and again this cabin is definitely seen as a very powerful cabin (all of the big three ones are) seeing as percy is the only one in this cabin we won’t really ever know if there is a different set of powers that he doesn’t have (like how hazel has gems and nico has necromancy or how jason has wind and thalia has lightning) so i’m going to just say all of the powers i think they could have. obviously a lot of people have established blood bending as a power he probably does have and i have to agree, and pee bending but that’s a whole different story. like this man could probably make someone’s bladder explode. another power could be the power to summon earthquakes, like they could control how bad it is, there could be ones so inefficient that maybe bother but an empty solo cup or a paper plate would shake, but there could be ones that could destroy entire cities and kill millions. also they can talk to horses

demeter: i have stated several times before that i think demeter cabin is extremely underrepresented throughout all of the series’s, yes there’s meg, who was a main character in toa but she was in the last book series that has been writen. before that there was little to no representation at all. this cabin is definitely seen as a very peaceful cabin, maybe not as much as hypnos but definitely close. they need a lot more ability’s that happen naturally (just like zues), like flowers naturally sprout or whither depending on their emotions, whenever they’re near plants they grow a little bit faster. demeter is also an underworld goddess so not only can they grow plants but they can kill them too (and probably control the mist). they can fertilize and/or compost soil within seconds.

ares: i think that area got pretty good representation (clarisse, frank) ares isn’t seen as a cabin that is necessarily powerful but more of a cabin the craves power and do what ever it takes to get it, that’s why they have so much, people are scared of them. i think that they should be able to summon weapons and armor at will, they should have a power like charm speak but instead of people being charmed into doing the speakers bidding their scared shitless and have no choice but to. they think their above everyone and think their powers are exceeding everyone else’s.

athena: athena’s caning got good representation just really shitty abilities, like what can they even do? their seen ad a leader cabin, like no matter what that’s the cabin you should take instruction from, no matter the situation. again they should have a power like charmspeak that they can only use in a life or death situation or when in dire need to use it, like to give orders to an incorporative soldier or to make it so a monster doesn’t kill them. everywhere they go people feel beneath them. they should be able to intake the knowledge of a book by just touching it, fiction or nonfiction but only in a language they are fluent in. also they can read in almost every language just they can’t speak or write in that language. they, like ares, can summon any weapon or price of armor at will.

apollo: apollo cabin got pretty decent representation, i say that because of apollos role in toa but the other series’s they were maybe mentioned for a chapter of two. they’re seen as a neutral cabin, but it varies depending on what they’re doing, like if it’s archery or health related, then they’re seen as more powerful than the average demigod. but if it’s music related they’re just seen as average even though they’d be better, it’s just because it isn’t battle related. they’d definitely have some really cool powers sense apollo is the god of so many things, like they can make people tell the truth or detect when they’re lying, or they can cause plagues. apollos also a god of agriculture so they could have abilities much like the demeter kids just not as good, like maybe they can help plant growth . he is ALSO the god or order and beauty (he isn’t the only one, adonis is the official) so maybe they have a better understanding of the law than a normal person, or they can charmspeak like the aphrodite cabin. and they should be able to speak italian

i am not going over artemis because while yes her cabin is in use sometimes, she doesn’t have demigod children.

hephaestus: they have really shitty representation in the pjo books, i can’t think of them being mentioned at all besides charles , then in hoo when leo (can’t remember if harley was hoo) comes in it gets gradually better. they’re seen as a needed cabin, as they make all the weapons and technology that’s in camp, but the demigods themselves aren’t seen as very powerful or authoritative. they need better abilities, like i can’t think of many that they actually have besides leo’s fire thing. being able to build something really well isn’t an ability. they should be able to weld things with their hands or work with extremely hot things (like glass) without the need for gloves. their bodies should be able to survive in fire for a short amount of time, they should be able to feed a fire without actually putting anything in it.

aphrodite: this cabin gets pretty good representation through pjo with selena but it gets a lot better in hoo with drew and piper. they’re also seen as a peaceful cabin, which makes sense because they don’t have many combat related abilities, their charmspeak could be used in combat but probably isn’t. they should be able to make two people fall in love, it doesn’t matter if the two want to or not. they should also be able to make people fertile, it wouldn’t mess up that persons cycle at all. they can heal people who have any sort of sexual difficulties (not being able to cûm or not being able to feel sexual pleasure in general)

Ok but I think the fact that Nico was willing to out himself, in front of a friend of him former crush, and playing into Cupid’s games (cause we know he’s stubborn af) for a quest really shows how complicated and just plain good he is.

Imagine this: You’re from the 1930s and have grown up knowing that there’s something “wrong” with you. Then you are magically taken to the present where it’s getting more accepted but homophobia still exists and the first person to show you kindness after losing everything is your crush. Who you can never date. So then you decide to enter your reputation era, do a bunch of bad shit but end up becoming good later! And your only friend a memory-wiped giant. That would kinda suck. (But bob is nice.)

Then you save everyone, save the world and shit, and find out you have a new sister before being kidnapped and almost dying. DAYS after that you are rescued by your former crush and sister and you don’t know anybody there besides them and your old crushes new girlfriend, who everyone thinks you like. Then, you have to go on a mini-quest with an (almost) total stranger to save a sword for your old half boss. (Don’t quote me on this I don’t really remember the mission) And then you go flying and follow the god of love, something you’ve avoided for so long. Who then makes you admit you’re gay and the person you used to have feelings for because he finds it interesting. And the person who you admitted it to seems to be homophobic.

But you STILL DO IT. Even though you could be safe if you didn’t. Even though you could be outed to everyone else. Even though the person you were outed to is friends with your former crush. Even though you could lose the family you already have because your sisters also from the 1930s. Even though everything could go wrong you still do it just to save everyone.

Let’s all appreciate Nico much more.

Everyone was singing around the campfire as you and Jason snuggled up. Ever since Jason and you made it official, Piper had been annoyingly popping up at the most inconvenient moments.

She started barging in on your couple time, causing the two of you to turn alone time into trio time.

You wouldn’t consider her a friend, not really, she was more of an acquaintance. You knew of the most messing with her mind and making her think Jason and her were an item, but you are also aware of the fact that it was an illusion and when it came down to it, she rejected him. But she couldn’t seem to let go.

Right now is one of those moments.

She appeared next to you two and just helped herself to the blanket cocooning you and Jason.

“Don’t mind me.” She said as she sat next to Jason’s side.

Jason gave you an annoyed look and mouth “sorry.” As he looked back to the fire.

You reached under the blanket and went to hold his hand.

“Jason! Could you fix the feather in my hair? I can’t quite get it to stay put.” She said.

“Sure.” And just like that, both of his hands are occupied. Piper gave you a smirk that went completely unnoticed by Jason as he concentrated on fixing the feather.

You were sick and tired of Pipers ability to get Jason to do what she wanted. Her powers whether she could tell or not, you knew she could but would love to give her the benefit of the doubt, had a clear affect on him. Cause afterwards he’s confused on why he did what she asked, he goes out of his way to avoid her because of it.

You decided to knock him out of it. And an evil little idea entered you head and you impulsively took it.

Jason was almost finished with the clasp on the feather when he felt your hand gently grab his knee. He ignored it but he couldn’t now because it was traveling up his leg slowly.

He tried to keep his breathing steady as he fixed the last little bit of the clasp. He tried to ignore the tightening of his pants as your hand stroked his leg slowly getting closer to his bulge.

“There.” He said as he turns away from Piper, ignoring the smile she sends his way.

He turns to you and gives you a stern look. You smile innocently back and turn to face the campfire.

you hand grabs his bulge hard causing him to quickly get up ands grab your hand, pulling you with him.

Piper gets up and asks where he’s going but he far to gone to listen to her.

He drags you all the way back to his cabin and slams the door shut. Everyone is far away at the campfire for anyone to see you enter his cabin.

“You’re gonna get it.” He says as he rips off your shirt and pants quickly.

Piper followed you. She was concerned for Jason, he had left in a hurry.

She thought something was wrong. He must have had a vision, or remembered something about the prophecy.

She walked up to the Zeus cabin and knocked on the door. No answer.

She could have sworn she saw you guys walk this way.

She was curious and opened the door.

What she was not expecting was to see Jason and you on his bed fucking like cats in heat.

She stared horrified at the scene in front of her as Jason and your moans bounced off the walls.

Jason felt someone watching them and turned around. He quickly fell on top of you and tried to cover you up with his body as he pulled a blanket over his bottom half.

“Piper?!?” He asked as he scrambled to cover you up.

Piper seemed to have come to her senses and snapped out of it. She looked like a deer caught in headlight.

“Shit! I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to- bye!” She said before running out of the cabin and slamming the door shut.

“Fuck, I’m sorry.” Jason said, losing all of his precious confidence and looking away.

“It’s not your fault. She walked in and just had to ruin things.” You said jealously. You played with your hair as Jason turned back towards you.

“I know. She barges in all the time. I’m sorry. Her charm speak whether she knows it or not affects me and then I just can’t focus clearly.” He said as he buried his head in his hands.

“Well,” you start as you push the blanket off his shoulders and trail your hands down his chest. “She’s not here now.” You say with a mischievous smile.

Jason lifts his head and smiles at you too before kissing you with so much urgency.

He picks you up flips you around, putting you on your hands and knees. He quickly rubs his cock through your warmth before thrusting in.

He goes faster, probably scared of Piper coming back, and moans as he reaches a point inside you only he can reach.

He reaches down and runs your clit, causing you to orgasm quickly. You won’t lie, being caught really turned you on.

Ok, I was warned this one was basically locked behind endless streaming paywalls or was otherwise just lost media. I was a little discouraged, so I was ready to just crack on with Series 1, but then I found the whole damn thing on YouTube. Lucky!

General Thoughts

Paul McGann was a ton of fun as the 8th Doctor! He was obviously having a ton of fun in the role, which I’m sure he must have been a fan of. He’s since retuned to the role in cameo appearances and such years later, so his infectious love of the material is apparent. I’m not sure if he was aware that his tenure as the Doctor would be relatively short, but he really makes the most of it. I also love his look! It’s a fun missing link from the campier looks of the OG Doctors into the more modern/tactical looks of the modern Doctors. I also liked the detail that his clothes were basically just a Halloween costume he stole after he woke up from his regeneration. Really clever.

Speaking of his regeneration, it was fun to see Sylvester McCoy return for an extended cameo as the 7th Doctor. I haven’t seen his Seasons yet, but I was familiar with him from The Hobbit and Sense8, so I really just like him as an actor. He’s also evidently having a lot to fun here, despite only about 20 minutes of screen time. As a newer fan, I’d say this is a great introduction to the fun of the Doctor’s personality and purpose in the modern era, as well as carrying the torch from the OGs.

I was really surprised by the setting being 1999 San Francisco, considering this is a pretty famously Anglo-centric show. It must have been a fun breath of fresh air at the time for fans, but I also enjoyed it as a new fan. It had a fun ‘90s neo-noir vibe to it that ‘90s England or some fictional future realm maybe couldn’t have gotten cross just right. (Also, idk if this is canonically the Doctor’s first visit to America, but I just found it funny that as soon as he steps out of the TARDIS onto American soil for the first time, he gets shot.)

Moving onto the Doctor’s companion this time around, we’ve got Daphne Ashbrook as Dr. Grace Holloway. She’s smart and resourceful and overall just really cool. An underrated companion, in my opinion. Her introduction in this movie is probably one of my favorite things about the franchise so far! She’s first referred to in the story as “Amazing Grace” by a fellow surgeon, followed by her having to rush into the 7th Doctor’s surgery straight from an opera house, all while still wearing her gown. Iconic.

Her relationship with the Doctor and her chemistry with Paul McGann is a ton of fun. They’re (for the most part) intellectually matched, so it’s fun to see the Doctor have a literal Dr to bounce off of. I do wish she had accepted the supernatural sci-fi truth of it all a bit sooner, cuz her having to come to terms with that takes up a good chunk of the runtime, but once she’s in the thick of it, she’s able to carry her weight. Also, idk if this is correct so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but Grace and the 8th Doctor appear to be the only Doctor/companion pair that are romantic with one another. idk how this aspect is liked among the fans, but I personally didn’t mind it. They’re quite cute together, so you really root for them.

Now for the villain. I know nothing of the Master so far, aside from the obvious that he’s an evil Time Lord who can also regenerate, albeit not as successfully, since the conflict of the movie is the Master trying to steal the Doctor’s lives after he uses up his own. I thought he was cool enough, and as a horror fan, his wormy-possession form reminded me a lot of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. I assume he’ll return as a big bad later on, but he’s a little one note here. He gets the job done, and Eric Roberts is obviously having a lot of fun chewing the evil scenery.

Favorite Moments

The Doctor’s little “these shoes fit perfectly!” was cute lol

Just one look at my blog will show anyone that I’m a massive Frankenstein fan, so the parallels drawn between the monster’s reanimation to the Doctor’s regeneration was super cool. Paul McGann also plays it really big! His “Who am I?!” dramatic moment after he comes back to life is classic monster-movie cool. Very Boris Karloff of him.

The one hospital orderly reacting to the 7th Doctor’s body disappearing by saying “You think he got up and went to a better HOSPITAL???” was so fucking funny oh my god

The look of the TARDIS’ interior appears to be carried over from how it looked for the 7th Doctor, but it fits the 8th Doctor so well. It’s like a gothic mansion, which just clicks so well with 8’s overall vibe.

The setting being at the direct turn of the millennium into Y2K was genius! It was sooo sooo cool I loved it

Overall, Doctor Who 1996 is a fun and stylish entry! Highly recommend for those who haven’t seen it yet.

Now, that’s it for the 8th Doctor for the time being. Onto the modern era show, starting with Christopher Eccleston taking the reigns as #9.
