[MK1] Bi-Han & Kuai Liang. Good brother? Evil brother? Nah, just different reactions to trauma, part 4
part 1, part 2, part 3
Sources provided a clear difference how brothers felt about their father. For Kuai Liang, the man was a cherished parent AND authority figure he built his life around. For Bi-Han, father (and mimicking him grieving Scorpion) was a source of frustration and limitation he did not agree with. Bi-Han and Tomas definitely had a more complex relationship with their father than Kuai Liang did.
So far, we got only little bits in regard to mother and her influences on brothers and Lin Kuei politics but enough to see how Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s relationship with her differ from how they felt about father.
Before I will dwell on those relationships I would like to point out a small detail noticed during my research: so far there is no direct mention that the mother was in fact a wife of Grandmaster. She is either referred to as a mother or parent - which makes sense, because her importance is related to the brothers, not to their father, so it would be weird if Bi-Han, Tomas or Kuai Liang talked about her as the “wife of Grandmaster”. At the same time, the lack of implication of marriage bond between mother and father[1] and how she is refered feels similar to the obscure reference from original timeline:
Born in America, Sub-Zero was the oldest of three children, which included a brother and sister. Their mother wanted a normal life for her sons, who had already been chosen by the Lin Kuei to become warriors for the clan. She tried in vein to hide them from their father whose own life in America was only a cover for his true identity and purpose. Eventually they were found and their father returned with them to his homeland. Their mother and sister were never seen or heard from again. (x)
Due to this, I decided to not describe her as the wife or supposed wife of Grandmaster and stick just to provided by sources terms of mother, parent and Lin Kuei fighter - so in advance sorry for repetition of those words. At the same time, this specific way of including the mother in Bi-Han, Tomas and Kuai Liang’s story creates a possibility of a more complicated family relationship, both between brothers and their parents or between the mother and father alone. And as a result the whole Lin Kuei inner politics, as we already have a hint of its complexity due to Cyrax and Sektor's loyalty to Sub-Zero threatening Kuai Liang’s birthright to the title of Grandmaster.  Keeping it in mind, here are some of my thoughts and conclusions about the mother and her sons.
Let’s start with Kuai Liang. There is no doubt he respected and deeply cared for father’s teaching. As I hopefully proved in the previous part, there is a solid reason to think that the loss of a cherished parent affected Scorpion to the point that grief influenced his behavior (mimicking father) and in result, relationship with brothers (barely talking with them if it didn’t involve father or tradition up to Sub-Zero’s betrayal). He expressed a burning anger at Bi-Han for letting their father die.
Kuai Liang doesn’t seem to have the same emotional bond with mother.
Sindel: Both your parents were excellent fighters. Scorpion: I can only hope to live up to their example.
Like yes, he will acknowledge Sindel’s opinion and hope to be good as his parents but that is like the only one time we hear him saying anything about mother - and even then, she is mentioned alongside the cherished father.
Mind you, this is solely my impression, but this intro reminds me of film scenes in which a character is told by others about a parent they had never had the chance to meet or know too well. It may be a wrong impression, but there is something about Kuai Liang’s response that makes me wonder how old he was when mother died and if he lost a parent at a young age, did it fuel his deep dedication to father as there was no other authority figure to influence him as a person?
Granted, both Kuai Liang and Bi-Han never bring mother first in their intro dialogues - what A) says a lot about their upbringing and B) differs from some mentions of father. But in Scorpion’s intro there is hardly anything truly personal about his bond with mother, or her personal feelings on Lin Kuei duty, especially when compared to those focused on the previous Grandmaster.
In contrast, we have interaction between Tomas and Bi-Han:
Smoke: If Mother were alive -- Sub-Zero: She would applaud my actions.
Tomas and Bi-Han may have a different idea of how mother would react to their brotherly conflict, but both talk about her in a more personal way. Tomas invokes her the same way he brings father into discussion:
story mode: "Were he here, Father would advise us to wait without protest."
or
Sub-Zero: You were never truly one of us. Smoke: Were Father here, he would disagree.
So we can assume mother had an impact on Tomas as he respected her as an authority figure similar to father. Alternatively, he thinks Bi-Han is more likely to listen about mother than anything he will say about their father.
The letter part would be an interesting parallel between Tomas and Bi-Han, because Smoke himself is implied to grow up without a father or not being close to his biological parent - when talking about his original family Smoke directly mentioned so far only mother and his twin sister.
Also, the same as happened with father in intro dialogues, Kuai Liang and Tomas do not talk about their Lin Kuei mother. Scorpion claimed that Tomas never mention his biological mother and sister:
Scorpion: You never speak of your mother and sister. Smoke: Their ghosts no longer haunt me, Kuai Liang.
but as the other intro dialogues proved, Tomas does talk about them directly and indirectly with some characters,
like Kitana,
Smoke: My sister was my twin. Kitana: How it must have hurt to lose her.
Tanya (priestess warrior)
Smoke: After losing my family, I lost my faith. Tanya: It's the only thing that can sustain you, Tomas.
and Liu Kang (Fire Lord who may be responsible for their death)
Liu Kang: I cannot bring back your family, Tomas. Smoke: You can't or you won't?
Like I said before, it is impossible to tell for sure about which mother, biological or adoptive, Smoke was speaking, but as he claimed Li Mei resemble him mother
Li Mei: I remind you of your mother? Smoke: No-nonsense and tough as nails, just like her.
I personally assume he meant the adoptive one, as according to Smoke’s ending he lived with the Lin Kuei family for around 15 years. Logically thinking he would have more clear memories of her than about the biological parent he lost in childhood. We of course have no idea when - and how - his Lin Kuei mother died, but if I’m right in my assumption, then Tomas is providing vital insight into what kind of person she was. As Tomas said, a tough and no-nonsense woman and that fits perfectly the image of an excellent Lin Kuei fighter, because frankly, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang easily fit that description too. As presumably, the majority of Lin Kuei warriors.
Another thing to note, the adoptive mother is not identified by Tomas with kindness, comfort or warmth or anything most people usually associate mothers with. This of course does not mean his adoptive mother didn’t love him or was a bad parent but may give us an idea what it felt to grow up in a clan primarily focused on training warriors. A purpose that definitely affected how people interacted with each other and what was expected from children.
However the most interesting thing about Tomas considering Li Mei to be similar to adoptive mother is the fact that from all possible female fighters, he identifies mother with a woman forced into and shaped by Umgadi system of servitude but who found her true purpose outside said system.
Kitana: Resuming your old role is a waste of material. Li Mei: Being First Constable is my first, best destiny.
or
Liu Kang: I hear the Umgadi want you back. Li Mei: I prefer to remain First Constable.
And this finally led me to the eldest brother and Sub-Zero’s statement that mother “would applaud me”.
Bi-Han outright claims mother would be proud of him and logically thinking, supportive of his choices. Which is a drastic contrast to how he perceives father as he did call the man a fool that doomed Lin Kuei.
And here comes an important thing: though sources barely provide us an idea who Bi-Han’s mother was in original timeline - a Lin Kuei herself who knew what lay ahead of her sons already chosen by the clan or just a woman that was unlucky to meet and have three children with an assassin working undercover in America - she was literally the only person that tried to give Bi-Han and Kuai Liang a normal, safe life. This woman, whoever she was, challenged a powerful assassin clan to save her two sons and daughter and was presumably killed alongside the daughter by Bi-Han’s father. This definitely affected Bi-Han’s worldview and interestingly, the sources have never implied Sub-Zero had any strong emotional ties with his father.
Mythologies Sub-Zero’s backstory mentions only Bi-Han and Kuai Liang being kidnapped against mother’s will, that cryomancy was passed down to Bi-Han from father, that he took his place and mantle when the man died and that is basically all we know about their relationship.
Between brothers, it is always Kuai Liang to mention other male members of their family with respect, as can be seen with new timeline Scorpion and alternative timeline Kuai Liang:
Sub-Zero: I disown you in every way. Noob Saibot: Then disown my name, 'Sub-Zero'. Sub-Zero: The name was Grandfather's first.
and
Sub-Zero: Grandfather? Sub-Zero: Defeat me to earn my mantle. Sub-Zero: You honor me with your kombat.
despite the possibility that said Grandfather may be the one that kidnapped brothers to enroll them into the Lin Kuei clan, while Bi-Han as a Noob Saibot was the one bringing their mother, even if just to be sarcastic/ironic:
Noob Saibot: You disappoint me. Sub-Zero: The feeling is mutual, brother. Noob Saibot: Mother would be so proud.
and on two separate occasions talked to Jacqui about her mom that passed shortly before MK11’s events:
Noob Saibot: Vera's soul calls you. Jacqui: Keep mama's name out your mouth, Revenant! Noob Saibot: Revenant? I am Wraith!
and
Noob Saibot: Return to your mother's arms. Jacqui: She's dead, asshole. Noob Saibot: And her soul is mine.
and isn’t it a surprisingly similar thing to current timeline Bi-Han talking to Kitana and Mileena about their dead mother?
And yes, Liu Kang’s timeline is a fresh start and a lot of things have changed but some elements seem to repeat themselves, whether the Keeper of Time agrees with it or not. Which is why I think mother - and her fate - again deeply influenced Bi-Han, the same as he was influenced in the original timeline by her desperate attempt to save him and Kuai Liang from Lin Kuei bondage.
Bi-Han claimed mother would applaud his action, so she may herself feel resentment for Grandmaster’s idea of tradition and duty to Earthrealm and that resentment was passed down to her eldest son. Alternatively, it was her death that made Sub-Zero question both the nature of the relationship between Lin Kuei and Fire Lord and his father’s wisdom.
This leads me to another detail that may not be intentional on NRS’s part but it is repeated through the sources. The same as mother is never said to be the wife of Grandmaster - what admittedly is the most logical assumption for a traditional (patriarchal) clan as a way to secure the line of legal heir from proper marriage  - the decision of adopting Tomas was made solely by Grandmaster. And so we have:
Smoke’s bio: As a boy, Smoke lived to hunt with his family. Their final hunt, however, ended in tragedy. Having accidentally trespassed onto Lin Kuei lands, they were attacked. Smoke was orphaned. Ashamed by his warriors' actions, the Lin Kuei's Grandmaster adopted Smoke. He raised him alongside his sons, Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
and
Kitana: You are Kuai Liang's adopted brother? Smoke: His father's honor demanded that he take me in.
and
Reptile: Lucky for you, Kuai Liang's father took you in. Smoke: It didn't feel that way at the time.
or
Bi-Han, story mode: Mind your place, Tomas. Father may have taken you in, made you one of us… but your blood will never be Lin Kuei.
As I talked before about Bi-Han and Tomas forced brotherhood on different occasion it struck me how the adoption resolved mainly around father’s selfish reasons like saving his honor and erasing the feeling of guilt rather the boy’s safety and emotional health. There is something truly disturbing about forcing a child to be part of clan that murdered his family over a trivial matter. But there is also something disturbing about how the mother had no say in the adoption of Tomas, as there isn’t any hint the man consulted that with her. Now, it is understandable that in a very traditional (patriarchy) clan the father, as the Grandmaster and head of his family, could make decisions without consultation with others, including his own wife or children. But usually people who love or at least mutually respect each other discuss the vital matters before making decisions whose consequences will have such a great impact on their and their children’s life. Adopting a child, so greatly traumatized and from totally foreign culture, is something that should be a joint decision of father and mother if both were supposed to raise said kid alongside their own. In that regard the father comes off badly, not only by how sources made his reasoning selfish (“his honor demanded”, “Ashamed by his warriors' actions”, “father wanted us to be brothers”) but also how uncaring he was toward the mother of his children, especially compared to Sindel and Jerrord.
We have no idea if Bi-Han’s father and mother were in love or were forced into a relationship by demands of tradition, maybe even through arranged marriage. But we have Sindel that though married Jerrord as a means to ensure peace,
Sindel's Bio: When Sindel ascended to Outworld's throne, she worried that she was ill-prepared. Adding to her stress: her impending arranged marriage to Jerrod, an Outworld noble. Forced into it to placate a rebellious region, Sindel could only pray that he was worthy. To Sindel’s delight, Jerrod proved an ideal partner.
she was loved, respected and supported by her husband and the feeling was mutual.
So far there is little suggesting Bi-Han’s mother had any real influence over Lin Kuei’s politics or that Grandmaster sought out her advice. She is not called the wife of Grandmaster, a title suggesting some high social position and so far only Sindel's remark gives us any idea what her role in clan could be. Liu Kang and Scorpion do not bring her dedication to Earthrealm and duty as a counterargument to Bi-Han’s resentment the way they talk about previous Grandmaster’s teaching and wisdom. She is pretty much removed from the picture and only Sindel and Tomas bothered to mention her at all. Sindel by praising Kuai Liang’s both parents as excellent fighters and Tomas by recalling her authority - the only one that Bi-Han seems to agree with, as according to him reclaiming Lin Kuei independence is what would please his mother.
If Tomas and Bi-Han have such a different idea of mother, the first question coming to mind is which brother speaks truth and which one is delusional. However I think that is not right question, because mother could not to speak about her desire to gain independence for Lin Kuei with Tomas - not because she didn’t love or accept the boy as her own, but because the orphan, as not born into clan, could not understand fully the Lin Kuei situation. Especially not when little Tomas was mourning the killed family and not when it became clear he and adoptive father became close.
Another thing worth to examine is the possibility that Bi-Han, consciously or not, also associates Li Mei with his mother, as
he clearly respect her, a former Umgadi turned into First Constable, more than Tanya, the current leader of priestess warriors:
Sub-Zero: No one in your order can defeat a Lin Kuei. Tanya: A nescient boast which is easily disproven.
or
Sub-Zero: Mileena sends a bodyguard, not a warrior? Tanya: Underestimate me at your peril, Sub-Zero.
vs
Sub-Zero: I hear your skills are formidable. Li Mei: As are those of all who have been Umgadi.
he encourages Li Mei to stop serve Royal Family and govern themselves
Sub-Zero: Your constables could also govern. Li Mei: We are sworn only to protect and serve.
something he usually does not do, as Sub-Zero has no interest in people outside Lin Kuei.
I’m painfully aware there is not enough source material to have clear conclusions and many of my thoughts are based on guesswork and comparative analysis. That said, I do think that as death of father deeply influenced Kuai Liang, the same happened with Bi-Han when their mother presumably was killed on duty. We have no idea what is the age gap between brothers, however I do think that Kuai Liang, as the younger brother, could not have a chance to know their mother well so all his devotion was focused on the living parent that raised him. If the mother personally wished for or actively supported Lin Kuei independence, she could do so as a way to ensure her children will have a better life than endless servitude, the same way the original timeline incarnation tried to save her sons from servitude to the assassin clan. In that case, Bi-Han was raised with an additional influence that shaped his mindset about his duty to clan above duty to Liu Kang and Earthrealm. If mother’s death was somehow the fault of Grandmaster and/or Fire Lord, as in, they sent her on ill-fated mission, it could be the origin of Bi-Han’s resentment against both men.
There is much more to say about the conflict between tradition vs independence and I for sure will talk about that soon, but the next part will be focused on POWER.
SIDENOTES:
[1] Alternative timeline seems the closest to presenting Bi-Han and Kuai Liang’s parents as the “normal family” as both look devastated when their children were kidnapped by Lin Kuei.
Tumblr media
At the same time, MK11’s intro dialogues of Sub-Zero and Noob suggests their grandfather was once a Sub-Zero himself, with raises a question how much their parents were aware of danger from the assassin clan and if any of them were a Lin Kuei themselves.

The Kombat Bois!
Satoshi Hasashi (resurrected): age 12, son of Hanzo and Harumi Hasashi. Is the emo one with anger issues.
A lot of trauma from watching his klan and mom die and then get murdered himself. Then being resurrected by Quan Chi and have his manipulated to hate Hanzo and then used as Quan Chi’s weapon of revenge against Hanzo.
Was cured of being a revenant by the combined powers of NightWolf and Quan Chi. Raiden promised to spare Quan Chi if he helped turned back Satoshi back to normal.
(Hanzo had to choose between revenge and his son’s life and he choose Satoshi)
But after Scorpion took Quan Chi to the NeatherRealm to be tortured by Lucifer for eternity.
Although Satoshi was human again he wasn’t the same sweet boy he once was. This is the main problem between him and his father.
He and Takeda often fight a lot because Satoshi is jealous of him. He often reminds Takeda he’s not Hanzo’s real son.
Get along a little better with Forrest Fox.
He abilities are fire manipulation, teleport, and he’s the best fighter in the group.
Wields a two chains with big metal skulls on the end of them and a kitana
Code name is Stinger.
Liu Jarrod (mostly called Jarrod): age 13 son of Kitana and Liu Kang. The heart of the group and it’s leader.
The nicest boi in the group. Humble, noble, optimistic, and naïve.
He is the prince of Outworld.
At this point in the timeline, Kitana is Kahn and Liu Kang became the fire and thunder god and is the protector of Earthrealm.
Has a shit ton of pressure put on him from a young age.
People expect a lot of him because he is the son of a Kahn and a God. It suffocates him a lot.
Is unintentionally neglected by his parents. Kitana and Liu Kang love him but Kitana is busy most of the time running Outworld and Liu Kang is busy protecting Earthrealm.
He’s secretly spiteful to his father.
Is closest to his redeemed Aunt Mileena.
His abilities are a little bit of Edenian magic, 2nd best fighter in the group, and later in life develops the ability to fly. His father taught him the flying kicks.
He wields a sword that was created from the original King Jarrod’s sword and Liu Kang’s Dragon sword. It was his 13th birthday gift.
Bi Fang: age 11 1/2, son of Bi Han and Sareena. Is the loud mouthed and jokester of the group.
Half Demon half cryomancer. Is also a little shit.
Is very hyper, mischievous, and carefree. He doesn’t have filter on his mouth and will say what’s on his mind. This means he can be a lil mean sometimes.
Uses humor as a defense mechanism because he fears rejection.
The other children at the Lin Kuei temple rejected him because of his demonic features so, he begged his mother to let him use a magic potion to hide his horns, fangs, and wings.
He and his father have a strained relationship. His mother understands him better.
Bi Fang is also the black sheep of his family. And a lot of people doubt him. He’s so used to disappointing his father that he’s just stopped trying.
His cryomancy is very advanced for his age. This is because of his demonic heritage. He’s almost as good as his uncle Kuai Liang in cryomancy.
Cryomancy is as easy as breathing for him. He doesn’t even have to think about it. He has difficulty controlling it a lot of the time.
His fighting skills aren’t as advanced though. This is mostly because he skips training classes a lot. Depends on his powers more than fighting skills.
Has demon speed, smell, and strength.
Has wings and is capable of flying but rarely uses it. He makes all of his weapons out of ice. Usually uses a ice bo staff.
Took on his uncle’s former code name Tundra.
—————
Bi Fang and Satoshi meet each other first when Kuai Liang and Hanzo introduces them to each other.
Satoshi, still hating the Lin Kuei, tries to kill a confused Bi Fang. So they’re not on the best terms when they meet again.
Mavado has the boys kidnapped from their homes and held for ransom.
The Red Dragon puts special collars on them that stops their powers and they throw the bois in a large cage.
At first Satoshi and Bi Fang where fighting.
Satoshi: Say one more word ice demon and I rip out your tongue!
Jarrod: Woah.
Bi Fang: Come on and try it!
Satoshi: I swear to the elder gods! I’ll kill you!
*Jarrod holds back Satoshi*
Bi Fang: Ya well, your mama is a hoe!
Satoshi: YOU’RE DEAD LIN KUEI SCUM!
Jarrod: BOTH OF YOU STOP! We’ll never get out of here if you don’t stop fighting!
*Both start fighting anyways*
Surprisingly the underdog, the man, the best cop ever, Stryker was able to get behind their defenses and had to fight against Hsu Hao.
The bois reaction to an everyday cop coming to save them:
Bi Fang: Paul Blart the mall cop is supposed to be our savior?
Satoshi: I’m going to die...again.
Jarrod: Do not think like that! I believe in him!
*Stryker gets knocked across the room*
Bi Fang: ...You were saying princess?
Satoshi and Bi Fang call Jarrod princess a lot.
Despite the boi’s doubt, Stryker helped then escape from the Red Dragon.
Jarrod got to drive Stryker’s cop car at one point in the adventure, when Stryker was knocked unconscious for a short time.
Bi Fang drew a dick on Stryker’s face while he was knocked out of course.
Mavado managed to get away but Hsu Hao was arrested and given to the special forces.
Stryker returned them to their fathers. The bois hugged him goodbye.
(He still wasn’t aware that their was a dick drawing on his cheek the whole time.) Liu Kang tried to tell him but decided not to. Finally, Kabal let him know. Stryker screamed “That little shit!”
After that, Stryker became their babysitter/coach. The bois became friends and did a spit swear to help each other become the greatest warriors in all the realms.
The special forces base became like their summer camp. Here they’d be trained by Jax, Sonya, Kabal, and most importantly Stryker.
Stryker would help them a lot with their behavioral issues and their emotional baggage. He became their main shoulder to cry on.
Stryker: Of course these kids are fucked up! 13 year old’s shouldn’t be training to be fucking grandmasters and kings! They should be worrying about their first crushes and math quizzes, and getting acne! I’m surprised they’re not already sociopaths!
He’d expose them to normal kid things like, going to amusement parks, movie theaters, and playing video games.
He even showed them how to play Dungeons and Dragons. This was like team building exercises.
The Bois make a very good team and despite their differences they worked really well together. They became better from being mentored by Stryker.
They call Stryker “Coach” and everyone else calls Stryker “the babysitter” and he’s the best damn babysitter in all the realms.
The 3 bois beat up Kano for hurting Stryker.
The bois built a super secret club house in the ground, that not even Stryker knows the location too.
Satoshi and Bi Fang tease Jarrod a lot but it’s out of love. Satoshi and Bi Fang are the only people who treat Jarrod like a normal friend and not a prince.
They spar together.
Bi Fang has a crush on Jarrod’s mom Kitana. It annoys the hell out of Jarrod.

Sindel Dialogues
Tumblr media
(Yes I am making new intros for the Edenian queen. Multiples one in fact. Yes I also am pissed at what they did to her. No this is not meant to be an attack on anyone that likes the new her or MK11. This is specifically a vent post for me that others can look at. I still hope you enjoy!)
Sonya:
1. Sindel: I heard you chased your daughter and her friends around with batons?
Sonya: They ready for anything now, aren’t they?
Sindel: That is certainly... one way to prepare them for the world...
2. Sonya: You’re okay with Kitana and Liu Kang getting together?
Sindel: Why not? He has promised to love her as long as he lives.
Sonya: They ALL say that in the beginning.
3. Sindel: We share something in common.
Sonya: We are powerful leaders and are proud mothers?
Sindel: Yes. On the second one at least.
4. Sonya: You’re the one who killed Jax.
Sindel: I would have never done that atrocity if I was in control!
Sonya: How can I be sure you are now?
Kitana:
1. Sindel: I failed my duty.
Kitana: You prevented Shao Kahn from taking Earthrealm though.
Sindel: I did not prevent him from taking you however.
2. Kitana: It was not your fault for what your revenant did.
Sindel: Then why does the guilt tear into me so?
Kitana: Because you have yet to let go of the past.
3. Sindel: I remember when you and Jade would spar and play together in the gardens!
Kitana: Mother, please! Now is not the time to discuss such things!
Sindel: Oh but you were so adorable with how you tried running up the walls!
4. Kitana: Mother, why do you not desire the throne? It is yours by right.
Sindel: Because It already has a worthy queen seated on it.
Kitana: I... Thank you mother.
Scorpion:
1. Sindel: Quan Chi wounded you greatly...
Scorpion: We all have scars.
Sindel: No truer words have been said.
2. Scorpion: My sword ended Quan Chi’s life.
Sindel: For that, I am indebted to you.
Scorpion: I did not do it for you. I did it for my clan.
3. Sindel: You have killed your master. What drives you now?
Scorpion: Ensuring another monster like him never rises up from the pits of the Netherrealm.
Sindel: I wish you luck on your never ending quest then.
4. Scorpion: You gave your life to save Earthrealm.
Sindel: But my daughter suffered in my place.
Scorpion: We cannot save everyone we want to.
Sub-Zero:
1. Sindel: Your ancestors abandoned Edenia to Shao Kahn!
Sub-Zero: If they had stayed, they would have been wiped out.
Sindel: If they had stayed, Edenia might have had a chance!
2. Sub-Zero: The last we met, you killed me.
Sindel: The last we met, Quan Chi used me for despicable things.
Sub-Zero: Yet I cannot be sure you do not still serve his whims.
3. Sindel: Frost seeks to depose you. Why is that?
Sub-Zero: She was too impatient and desired more power.
Sindel: Seems the lust for power ails humans as well.
4. Sub-Zero: What does the Edenian queen wish with the Lin Kuei?
Sindel: The be assured you will not attack Outworld.
Sub-Zero: As long as Outworld does not attack first.
Sindel (Evil):
1. Sindel: Shao Kahn had me cloned?
(Evil)Sindel: He perfected a weak willed wife.
Sindel: He had already forced me to death, must he defile me further?!?
2. (Evil)Sindel: You should have stayed with Shao Kahn.
Sindel: That bastard killed my beloved Jarrod!
(Evil)Sindel: And gave you a much stronger one in return.
3. Sindel: What is it you desire, abomination?
(Evil)Sindel: To return Shao Kahn to his rightful place on the throne.
Sindel: Then you are doomed to fail.
4. (Evil)Sindel: Kitana should be punished for such disobedience.
Sindel: Don’t you dare touch her you witch!
(Evil)Sindel: Then I’ll scream until her ears bleed!

March Media Madness!
Hello and welcome to the post where I talk about all the movies, books, and TV I consumed this month in my seemingly never ending quest to shout my feelings into the void. And oh boy all the winter anime is ending so I feel dead inside.
*puts on sunglasses* Let’s do this.
Movies!
Bohemian Rhapsody: The one about Queen Freddie Mercury. And it’s pretty good. It’s a little weird seeing a biopic of a band with literally no struggles getting into the industry, and I wouldn’t say it does wonders for the negative stereotypes about bisexuals...but who cares because if you’re watching this movie, it’s because you just want to sing along to some Queen songs and see some big hair! 8/10
How to Train Your Dragon- The Hidden World: The third and final installment in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, in which Dreamworks pulls a Butterfree on us, but at least we get a happy ending. This franchise holds a special place in my heart for so many reasons, and I’m glad that this one stuck the landing. Each movie has its own specific feeling and message, and they all advance the story in unique ways. Apart from being beautifully animated and hilarious, it also packs the big emotional punch we all were expecting and ends on a satisfying note overall. But it’s still not perfect. The other riders are at their most useless by far, and this is coming from someone who never really minded them before. They’re a lot more irritating if you’ve watched the tv series and can see how they can be useful. And Astrid really only provides emotional support instead of her usual ass-kicking. The villain was...fine...but he didn’t really pack much of a punch. And I really wished they had kept some sort of continuity and embraced the television series (I NEED A DAGUR CAMEO)! But these are mostly small things. If you haven’t given this franchise a try yet, please give it a chance! 9/10
Tumblr media
Ralph Breaks the Internet: The poorly named sequel to Wreck It Ralph, in which Ralph and Venelope must travel to the internet to save Sugar Rush and keep the game characters from becoming homeless. It’s a fine follow up, but it definitely doesn’t have the same impact the first one did. There’s a heck of a lot going on in this movie, and it feels like it tried to do too much in terms of plot and character arcs in favor of sacrificing the humor from the first movie. And I really miss Felix and Calhoun. But there are a lot of good things about it too. Everything the Disney princesses do is pure gold, Shank is amazing, and there is a ton of effort put into building the world of the internet. I’m sure it will be pretty dated in a couple years, but it’s not just a quick cash grab full of name dropping and references (even though Disney seems like it wants it to be). It’s still worth checking out. 7.5/10
A Quiet Place: A family must survive in a world where deadly alien monsters that are attracted to sound have invaded the planet. I am the world’s biggest wimp when it comes to scary movies, and even I was interested enough in the premise to want to see this movie. And yes it’s amazing! The performances are all incredibly moving and believable, we get good representation of a Deaf character, the sound design is so creative it should be used in film classes, and it tells a thrilling and heart wrenching family story in only an hour and a half. I think I liked it because the focus wasn’t on the monsters just going around killing people. It’s about a family and what parents will do for their children. People like to say there’s a ton of plot holes, but if you actually think about them for more than five seconds, you’ll see there’s really nothing to pick apart because their decisions all make sense in the end.
My only question is about the cochlear device the daughter (Regan) uses. Was the dad (Lee) trying to make a new cochlear implant? Did Regan already have the internal component implanted in her cochlea? Had she been using one since before the monsters came? Did it break earlier because of the monsters’ connection with electromagnetic waves? Because if not...CIs don’t really work like that. I’m just confused about that situation. But that’s kind of nitpicky when this movie is still amazing. Even if you hate horror movies, I’d highly suggest it simply because of how creative its production is. 9/10
Tumblr media
Mary Poppins Returns: It’s exactly what it sounds like...Mary Poppins returns to help the now adult children of the Banks family with the help of Lin Manuel Miranda. It’s fun, but it definitely goes on too long. Though I appreciate Emily Blunt putting her own spin on the character. Odds are if you like the original, you’ll probably like this too. 8/10
Fantastic Beasts- The Crimes of Grindelwald: The second movie in the Harry Potter prequel-verse, where Grindelwald basically becomes wizard Hitler and Newt is more concerned with winning Tina back then saving the world. Okay...this movie is not great. Structurally it’s a mess, the fun is being sucked out of the wizarding world, the characters make decisions that don’t align with previous behavior and make no logical sense, and there really is just the bare bones of a plot. There are also several characters that don’t need to be there and are just thrown in for fanservice (for now anyway). I found myself constantly saying how things don’t work like that and asking why things are happening. But even so, there are still good things about it. Visually it’s...fantastic. Jude Law makes a good young Dumbledore, and even Johnny Depp embodies what I always imagined Grindelwald at the height of his power would be like...I just wish it wasn’t Johnny Depp. I also wish it had more humor, because what was there was funny. It’s really just a transition film, which proves this franchise should never have been five movies, and Rowling should have focused on a Marauders era series or on young Dumbledore and Grindelwald. You just have to form your own opinion. 6.5/10
Maquia- When the Promised Flower Blooms: An immortal girl becomes a teen mom to an orphaned baby after her clan is killed. It’s basically a high fantasy version of Wolf Children. I honestly don’t know what to think about this movie. It does the family relationships so well and really drives home what it means to be a parent. However, its setting really throws me out of the movie because it tries to focus so much on the politics and background of this world without really succeeding. And because it is about a baby growing up, the pacing is so fast it will give you whiplash. But it is beautifully filmed and animated, and I would have bawled my eyes out at the ending if I wasn’t so distracted by how much I didn’t like the other characters and things that were happening at the castle. So...yeah, it’s a well animated, hard hitting movie that will probably mean more to parents overall. I just wish it was a TV series or a trilogy or something other than a two hour film. 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Free Solo: A National Geographic documentary covering Alex Honnold, a man who is attempting to climb up the 900 meter side of El Capitan at Yosemite national park...without ropes or safety equipment. Yes, this is an incredible feat and the actual climbing portions are gripping and super intense. But personally, I found who Alex is as a person much more fascinating...and not necessarily in a positive way. Honestly, he can be a jerk. This sounds horrible to say considering he’s a real person and he’s doing something amazing, but seriously watch this movie and tell me this man is not one step away from being a sociopath. It’s completely understandable why he thinks the way he thinks, but it’s not exactly healthy for the other people in his life. I would be just as interested to see a two hour therapy session with him as I was with his climbing. Anyway, if you love gorgeous scenery and butt-clenching thrills with a side of psychologically interesting perspectives, watch this on the biggest screen possible. 8/10
The Matrix: REALITY IS AN ILLUSION, THE UNIVERSE IS A HOLOGRAM, BUY GOLD BYE
Yeah I’d never seen The Matrix, but I really didn’t expect it to be EXACTLY like the Oto arc in Tsubasa Chronicles. It’s too long, Neo’s an incredibly flat protagonist (but I feel like that’s on purpose to serve some sort of self-insert fantasy), and it seems like a YA dystopian fantasy series from 2013...but in an endearing sort of way. And hey it’s got a lot of cool slow motion fighting and neat body horror if you’re into that sort of thing. 7/10
Books!
Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman: What happens when California literally just runs out of water one day? A group of teens go on an apocalyptic field trip to find some of course! I’ve only read one other Neal Shusterman series before, but I’m sensing a pattern of how well Shusterman can propose a theoretical question and then build an entire world around it. And this duo knows how to cover as many bases as possible because every time I ask a question about how something world work, the authors answer it almost immediately. This is a great story with very well written characters, and it even has a small hilarious twist in the end that makes you completely rethink everything about one of the characters. Most importantly it doesn’t follow the Scythe series’ formula of terribly written romance. However...it’s definitely a major bummer. It’s very interesting to think about, and it’s a roller coaster of a story...but the roller coaster only goes down and makes you want to scream all the time. If you like books that make you question human behavior and society, definitely check it out, but get ready to start hoarding all the water you own. 8/10
Jackass!: Okay this one’s a manga, but I’m still counting it. Honestly I don’t even know how to describe the plot...there’s two boys...there’s pantyhose...there’s a fun side character who is openly gay and doesn’t take shit from anyone...there’s introspection about how to deal with developing feelings and realizing you care about someone. It has the most awkward premise ever, but it’s unfairly good I promise. The less you know going in the better. 8.5/10
TV Shows!
The Umbrella Academy: A family of seven children with super powers who were “adopted” by an eccentric billionaire become child superheroes. So naturally, they all grow into jaded adults who are now tasked with saving the world from the inevitable apocalypse. And it’s...amazing. Like, this should be the new Stranger Things amazing. It’s a Netflix original based off the Dark Horse comic series, and it has one of the most binge worthy plots I’ve ever seen. It is capable of pulling off some very weird things because it just leans into it. The setting and aesthetic is very similar to A Series of Unfortunate Events where different time periods seem to collide, and it works pretty well. It has (mostly) likable characters, interesting and/or empathetic villains, great use of music and editing, and Emmy worthy performances. The only thing I don’t like (aside from them killing off a perfectly interesting character for no reason at the beginning of the show) is the romantic relationship between two of the siblings. Because naturally they had to put a romance in it, and it just sort of conforms to the idea of “adopted siblings aren’t related so it’s not weird.” But even they have some great scenes together so I can’t be too annoyed. It’s amazing. Please watch it. 10/10
Tumblr media
Ducktales (2017): The reboot of Ducktales, in which the three nephews of Donald Duck go on mysterious adventures with their obscenely wealthy uncle. I’m pretty sure we all know this as the cartoon where Scrooge McDuck swims in his giant pool of money. It took me a long time to get to, but I like it! Webby is an amazing character, and even though the boys can be annoying, at least they all have their own personalities. I just wish Launchpad was a little less...stereotypically clueless. I’ve never seen the original series, so I can’t compare them, but I’d recommend it for everyone who likes Gravity Falls style mysteries and satisfying story arcs. 8.5/10
Carmen Sandiego (2019): The Netflix original animated series that focuses on a master thief who travels the world stealing important artifacts before an evil organization can get to them first...AND HOLY CRAP WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS!? I don’t know anything about the original Carmen Sandiego franchise, but dang this revamp is awesome. Carmen is a great character who banters enough to be a Marvel protagonist, there’s unique animation, some mystery, and its own twists. The side characters may not be for everyone, but I like them...well, most of them. Apparently the purpose of the original franchise was to be educational, so they do sound like they’re reading the Wikipedia page for every new place they visit in the beginning of each episode, but at least the cultural things they mention always come back into play later. If you liked the new She-Ra or shows with great heroines, PLEASE WATCH IT! 9/10
Queer Eye (season 3): The third season of the ridiculous makeover show where five fabulous gay men rocket into people’s lives to boost their self confidence and keep them from living in filth. I hate that I love this show so much. I don’t like things that try to be overly emotional, but dang it, this show will just make you feel happy...and then sad...and then happy again. 10/10
Honorable Mentions
THE LAST SEASON OF STAR VS THE FORCES OF EVIL IS AIRING! Stop sleeping on this gem people!
Tumblr media
Netflix finally released the rest of Arrested Development season 5
I started watching Yu Yu Hakusho because it’s a classic and the dub is hilarious.
I also started watching The Librarians. It’s...something that’s for sure.
And I’m currently reading Reign the Earth which is basically Avatar the Last Airbender set all in the desert.

Pining and Pinning [jarrod/mc]
Title: Pining and Pinning
Summary: Sparring makes up around seventy percent of your time with Jarrod, but all this training hadn't prepared either of you how to deal with feelings.
Fandom: Keeper of the Sun and Moon; Keeper of the Day and Night; Choice of Games
Characters | Ships: Main Character/Jarrod Lin
Tags: Pining, Also Pinning (Literally), Denial of Feelings, Almost Kiss, Sparring
Ao3 Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30802526
Notes:  Happy birthday, Jarrod! This is set during book 2, [spoilers] after MC's deathbed love confession. Also, the options below are meant to look like the different choices in the game, hehe. Dedicated to my amazing twin, Jamesio, who dragged me into this universe!! Ily bro <3 Special thanks to my darling Kristi for helping me improve as a writer and as a human <3
---
"And thats why... hah... I can totally... handle a gun!"
You punctuate that sentence with an overhead strike of your blade — one that Jarrod is quick to block with his own sword.
The situation is reminiscent of the very first time you met Jarrod: the same bright training lights illuminating the hard lines of Jarrod's muscles as he punches and parries; except now, a silver short sword gleams ominously at his side.
You're proud of yourself. You've grown and learned so much that he actually needs a weapon to defend against you this time.
Jarrod is an excellent teacher, if incredibly hard to please.
At the moment, Jarrod appears severely unimpressed by your combat skills as much as he is with your impassioned speech about carrying a celestial gun.
(You don't really care about owning one, not really, but you've missed the silly banter between mission briefs about monsters, researching about anti-human evil organizations, and the resigned way Jarrod tears your heart into tiny pieces each time he rebuffs you.
Weapons are, ironically enough, a safe zone for the two of you.)
"Are you done?" Compared to how badly you're out of breath, Jarrod sounds way too composed as he stabs at your chest.
You knock his hand aside, spinning around to slash at him. "Not even close! Still got... a couple more... lines for you."
(It's nice. Normal. He's always been a better hunting and sparring partner than a conversational one, anyway.)
Predictably, frustratingly, he leaps out of your grasp. The whole dance begins once more, with you seeking him out as Jarrod nimbly ducks and weaves out of range.
(The tension outside of training is similar. He keeps you at a distance, only to sneak past your defenses with a tender touch.)
Dodge, strike, parry. Lather, rinse, repeat.
"Okay, but... long range fights find the celestial gun to be very useful—"
"If they can actually aim," counters Jarrod with a well-placed kick that should've knocked you off your feet. You know him so well at this point that you manage to dodge, if barely.
"I can aim! I'll have you know, I have 100% accuracy! You just don't know what I'm aiming at."
"...The answer is still no, [MC]." Jarrod once again crushes your hopes by knocking his hilt against your stomach. Oof. "Look, I love how determined you are, but you have to know when to quit sometimes."
It's not even really about the gun anymore, you think.
(You would quit if he told you to, would keep to stolen glances from afar and hapless daydreams, if you didn't see the way he stares at you when he thinks you're not looking. If you didn't know the weighty concern behind his words. If you weren't aware of the minute way he tenses when you touch.
You know him well enough by now.)
"Sometimes, it's worth to take a risk, Jarrod!" Gritting your teeth against the pain, the frustration, you raise your sword and charge right at him. The force of your conviction nearly manages to knock him over, but Jarrod being Jarrod, manages to turn your momentum against you.
The training mat is harsh and unforgiving when you land, both your swords clattering to the side in a last ditch effort to turn the tide.
It's not a foreign feeling. Jarrod and Thalia have pinned you to the floor numerous times, often with some snarky remark or cheeky taunt. Bracing yourself for the biting sarcasm, you look up and meet Jarrod's eyes.
For a second, time stops.
For what seems like a minute, you question the existence of temporal magic, unsure if you should thank or curse the user who trapped you both.
For what feels like an hour, you find yourself lost in flecks of gold and black in the dark, warm brown of Jarrod's eyes.
Your heart races, beats wildly in your chest. Heat creeps up your cheeks. Self-preservation and training kick in: you're seized by the urge to escape and throw him off you, but this is at war with the instinctive feeling of safety and security you've come to associate with Jarrod.
Jarrod, who's had your back in a fight more times than you could count, fighting by your side like you're both parts of a well-oiled machine.
Jarrod, who's held your hand tenderly as he brought you back from the brink of death, scarred hands as gentle as ever.
Jarrod, who's tirelessly helped you prove yourself and fight back against confusing, complex world of monsters and mayhem.
The same Jarrod who remains unmoving, lips parted in shock as he stares down at you.
Possibilities bloom as the distance between you diminishes, as you wonder, not for the first time, how Jarrod's lips must feel against your own.
With his warm weight pressing down on you, you decide to:
> Speak amidst the hammering drum of your heartbeat in your ears. "...Jarrod?"
The sound of your voice tears through the still-born quiet.
All thoughts of closing the gap between you two disappear, shimmering in the air like mist as Jarrod shakes his head, gaze shuttering close once more.
He gets up.
> Wink at him. "Is that a knife in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"
Jarrod groans. He pointedly ignores the way you've been waggling your eyebrows and rolls off you in one fluid movement.
"It's a knife," he says flatly, bringing out a switchblade from his pocket and flicking it with finesse.
(Now you're convinced he's just showing off.)
"But you're still happy to see me?"
Tucking the knife away, Jarrod rolls his eyes and doesn't bother to reply (or deny that allegation.)
> Stay completely still.
You don't even dare to breathe as seconds, minutes, perhaps even hours tick by.
The feel of his skin, flushed and sweaty from multiple sparring rounds, pressed against your own.
The weight of his stare, drawn and intense, softening the slightest bit.
The heat of his breath, so close yet so far. Anticipation grips you as his lips are hover inches from yours—
"Ahem."
The sounds of polite coughing crash through the moment, splintering it into a thousand pieces.
In a flash, Jarrod rolls to the side, leaping to his feet. You're left bereft and extremely irritated at the onlookers who should've minded their own business.
He offers out his hand to you, face turned away.
You immediately take it, sparing a second to relish in his soft, steady grip against the rough, battle-worn calluses of his hand.
The next second is spent nearly crashing into Jarrod's chest when he pulls you up and close — too close. Brown eyes widen in surprise as Jarrod realises the scant sliver of space between you two. Clearing his throat, he quickly drops your hand and folds his arms over his chest. Under the harsh lights of the training room, you swear you can see a tinge of pink on his tanned cheeks.
"Let's go again," he says eventually. "No more distractions this time."
(A distraction. That's what he says, but you know you're more than a measly distraction to him.
You know he cares about you. You wonder if he knows how much.
You know him well enough not to hold your breath.)
