Jack Fenton is Kryptonian (or perhaps a meta? Up to you). He certainly doesn’t know it. Take that as you will.

Let me set the scene for you;

Kite Man, the nemesis of Spoiler (Spoiler would say otherwise), was currently face down on the concrete. The kite on his back was ruined and torn, but he was still alive nonetheless, albeit bloody and bruised with a broken arm and sprained ankle.

There was a fire burning somewhere in the background, maybe a fire hydrant or two taken out by a monstrous armored vehicle (no, Red Hood didn’t take the Batmobile for a spin) which was an unholy cross between a tank and a minivan.

What kind of company would construct and sell such a thing? Legally???

The bats had yet to show up, but Gotham’s citizens current savior was this built man in an eye-burning orange suit of some kind. His midnight black hair, greying at the roots; kind, warm, and icy blue eyes like the delicate frost on a windowsill; focused on passing out homemade fudge to the street children who nearly got caught in the crossfire.

Who is this kind man? Did the smog and heavy clouds really part to shine down in this out-of-towner? Who’s his cheery polite wife with fire orange hair, warming the coldest of criminals hearts and treating any physical injuries.

Who are his kids? Peeking out of the tank of a van, spiky black hair with eyes that match his fathers, ginger hair and sea foam green eyes that reflect her mothers - however, the wife’s eyes, Maddie’s eyes, are a rich lavender unlike her daughters.

Kite Man attempted to sit up, dazed and probably concussed, only to get shoved down again and tied up by the hazmat suit power couple that roamed Gotham’s streets. Now sporting a broken and bleeding nose, Kite Man groaned in defeat, muttering about how he’ll be back for vengeance.

The city spirit tilted its eldritch head, it purred with satisfaction in what it managed to draw into its city limits. Gotham had found its new golden child, and it wasn’t about to let him go.

TL;DR: Jack Fenton beats Kite Man’s ass with super strength and his wife before handing out homemade fudge.

I feel like Jack and Maddie would be genuinely nice people, unfortunately the cannon stuff doesn’t really represent them that way, making them ignorant and neglectful.

Imma just twist that a bit, they care for their children, they’re good parents and they have their moments where they get wrapped up in a project for hours… but when someone needs help, the Fenton’s can’t say no. Jack unknowingly starts to develop powers that aren’t ectoplasmic based, he hides it well enough. (Coughs- sound familiar but the powers are ecto-related?)

Point is: the Fentons care, they care for the people of Amity Park and by extension, Gotham. They love their kids and are always giving back to the community. I feel like they should have been depicted as better parents, however, there is this thing called headcannons I heard about… :)

See y’all next time, I’m probably gonna disappear for a couple days as I go back into school ‘n stuff. 🫡

Pt 1

Jazz was the original troublemaker in her family before Danny. 

Well, troublemaker is kind of a stretch, but if you were to ask any other adult that wasn’t her parents then they would have told you otherwise. 

I mean, who would want to befriend the toddler who sprouts biosciences facts to an agitated classmate who just wanted her to move from the Lego box? How else would you explain how a police officer found a child with red hair in the middle of the night saying that she wanted to follow the pretty voice in the woods? What would you say when the pretty dolled up girl talks about what her brother is going to look like when nobody, not even her mother, knew that she was pregent?

No one had an answer to that, and they all tried to stay away from the weird pretty girl with amber fire hair and deep teal blue eyes with a mind that was too smart for her own good. 

Most of the adults chalked it up to be the parent's fault for her ‘quirks’ while the children wanted to stay away from the freak who didn’t understand that they were more afraid of her then the burned victorine women walking through the streets. 

For a while, even with the birth of the boy the girl predicted to be true, was known as the witch of her family. The weirdo, the cursed child and freak of nature. 

But then her brother started to grow from being a toddler into a child and the girl was seen less in the streets and more at home. She drove her attention to her brother and her brother alone which helped the town to relax a bit when they no longer saw a wisp of red hair at the corner of their eyes. 

(There was always a slight feeling of uneasiness that came with the presences of the girl. No one can explain what it meant or what caused it but whenever she entered into a room somehow it was like the feeling of tension and hands gipping at them ghosted their throats and opened their eyes. It was the feeling of a prey watching the walk of a predator in their home yet were unable to understand why said predator never strike.)

(The hint of teeth and to bright eyes and burning sun hair was as equally as enchanted as it was terrifying.)

Then her brother grew, and the girl was more isolated, preferring to stay in her brother's company or to bury herself in a book and slowly the town relaxed. Not so much that they don’t stop search, but enough that they don’t fear to step outside their homes without the phantom sensation of eyes on their very being. 

Suddenly the town was quiet and that was okay. 

It was okay until the brother started to act strange, the presences of ghost entering their own, and a group of men in white started to invade their town. 

Suddenly eyes were on the new threat that invade their home, suddenly it wasn’t so quiet anymore, suddenly there was another set of predators stalking their lands.

But the town learned to adapt, have to adapt as they were no longer able to leave so easily anymore, trapped in their own home with the dead and by the men with black glass over their eyes watching them. 

Suddenly the Fenton’s were their least important problem and they left it at that. 

That was until the town woke up to something that left shivers down their spine and ice in their throats. 

Jasmin Fenton was dead, Daniel Fenton was missing, Madeline Fenton was screaming, and Jack Fenton was silent.

Phantom doesn’t hold her gaze long before his attention flits back to whatever it is he’s holding. She lowers her weapon, and watches Phantom try to manipulate the object with shaking hands.

She moves a few steps closer. 

She’s never seen him so injured. 

“What—what are you doing?” she asks. “What do you have?”

It’s long, thin. Phantom is pointing it inwards, the way someone might to stab themselves.

Everything is so covered in ectoplasm it takes her getting closer still for her to realize—it's a syringe—full of liquid that glows the same toxic green as ectoplasm.

She can only think of one thing it could be. 

The small, empty vial rolling to a stop at the toe of her slippers only confirms it.

Not as much as Danny would like to think. As the trial goes on, Danny discovers he and his sister aren't who or what they thought, that their parents are not as they seem, and Vlad, his enemy, may be their only shot at survival.

This story is told primarily through dialogue and epistolary storytelling as an experiment. Throughout the story, please expect body horror, illegal and nonconsensual experimentation on human beings, murder, and kidnapping. Mind the tags, please.

Darcy Lewis' Adventures Dating Dracula- AO3 link here. Summary: Follow Darcy Lewis and Vlad Masters as they start dating- and deal with everything from ghostly serial killers, the Things In Crybaby Creek, Politics, the Addams Family, and international spyassasins.

The Fantabulous Emancipation of Danny Phantom- AO3 link here. Summary: The Fenton family journeys to Gotham to get Jazz settled in her dorm at Gotham U. Things go a little sideways when Danny lets something ghostly slip, and his parents try to shoot the 'evil ghost' out of him.

Danny can't go home. But his sister's 18 and willing to rent a campus apartment, Gotham has a layer of ectoplasm so thick it's almost as good as Amity Park, and he's already made a new friend!

Harley was just going to get snacks for Bud & Lou, her hyenas. She did not mean to befriend a tourist, but the kid's almost as crazy as she is!

Join Danny and Harley in a journey of friendship, crime for good reasons, and kicking Vlad and the Joker's ass.

Jack, the DILF of Amity Park- AO3 link here. Summary: AU where Vlad doesn't lust over Maddie. No, he's obsessed with Jack, and since college (minus a 20 year gap), they've fought over the man's affections like two cats.

However, as Maddie would kill him in 2 seconds, tge shenanigans are more sitcom-esque competition, conolete with Danny begging for brain bleach multiple times, and Vlad realizing Jack isn't the only Fenton he's in love with.

Jack, of course, is completely oblivious to the fact his visiting very friendly people causes Vlad and Maddie to stalk him amd talk for once. Or is he?

Danny Phantom in Showghost!- AO3 link here. Summary: Tucker Foley was having a perfectly normal day- until he runs into Narrator, a ghost who is possibly as powerful as Clockwork or Ghostwriter. The problem isn't Narrator- they just want their book back.

No, the problem is the GIW. And the possibility that the town of Amity Park was sucked into a mini-universe outside of time. And, to add more problems to Tucker's day, he seems to be the only one who realises what's going on.

"We are on a timeline, though," Narrator said cheerfully.

"What?! When were you gonna tell me that?!"

They scowled. "Those idiots in white broke my book. If we don't wake everyone up before we run out of pages, everyone dies here."

Not Broken, Just Bent- AO3 link here. Summary: The sequel to Vlad & The Accidental Family Acquisition and Darcy Lewis' Adventures Dating Dracula, NBJB is a Jazz-centric fic about growing up asexual, and the trials and tribulations of being asexual in a very sexual culture. thank you! deathly weapons is one of my favorite things to read- and i especially love reading your meta on the subject- so anything you’ve read that you think is great/ has an interesting premise would be cool to see.

I’m always astounded and delighted when people tell me they're rereading Deathly Weapons or anything else I wrote.  To me, one of the elements of a good story is it being something that you can return to, and it’s lovely to hear that I’m doing something right on that front. 

(Also I’m just so humbled that you would give my story your time like that.  I put a fair bit of my own time into Deathly Weapons, but that’s still a little piece of your life in return and it’s just… amazing.)

For me writing and meta are things that kind of ouroboros together.  I tend to engage with stories in a very inquisitive/ interrogative way - I want to understand the characters/ events/ world it’s trying to create as well as the mechanics behind the curtain - and I have a special place in my heart for stories that were constructed with enough thought to reward that kind of curiosity.  Which then reflects in my own writing and the behind-the-scenes planning work I do to make sure things hold up to inspection by other puzzlers.

Fanfic Recommendations

This one is actually a bit of a challenge for me because I consume media (and analysis) quite widely across a lot of fandoms.  I tend to draw eclectic inspiration from my whole ‘source-pool’ and its meta-patterns, so it’s hard for me to point to any one thing and say: ‘that specifically inspired part of DW’.

It’s also a little tricky because Deathly Weapons was partly inspired by me having some specific itches that I couldn’t find any stories to scratch. “People won't write the books I want, so I have to do it for myself” and so on and so forth. If you would like to make any recs based on DW then please do so, I would love to see them.

That said, my FFN Favourites and AO3 Bookmarks double as general recs lists - I tend to use my bookmarks/faves as quick-access for stories I want to revisit, so you can take anything on there as something I would potentially recommend to other people.

What I’d like to do now is give a more specific list of stories that are somewhat DW-adjacent or are doing interesting things with their premise/execution/characterisation:

For sometimes, believing you are doing what is right makes innocent people suffer; and sometimes, saving people's lives is not enough to make you their hero.

Not the first YJ x DP fic I ever read but this is the first one I remember really sticking with me.  Warning for heavy content but lovely style.  Also, coincidentally, by the artist who drew the cover which first enticed me into checking out Turning Tables.  Because life, like fic, is sometimes very well written.

The Heart of a Hero (FFN) by Rookey DP x YJ | Gen | Hiatus/ Discontinued | Post TUE AU With the whole world blaming him for an accident that killed thousands, Danny Fenton finds himself living day-to-day in a rather peaceful city he thought to be widely overlooked by the Justice League. But the heart of a hero knows no bounds, and Danny finds staying hidden to be much harder than he anticipated; especially when Happy Harbor isn't nearly as "overlooked" as he thought.

Control (FFN) by nikodark  DP x YJ | Gen | Abandoned | CW: kidnapping & violence Dick Grayson gets kidnapped a lot. A whole lot. We all know that tired trope. But this time he gets kidnapped by a ghost.

The Half-Finished, Half-Assed Guide to Being Half-Dead: By a Half-Ghost (AO3) by ItsyBitsyBatsySpider DP x YJ | Gen | Ongoing Dick Grayson is thrown into a world he didn't even know existed, with powers that he can barely understand, and Danny Fenton did not expect to become a ghost mentor when the Justice League came knocking on his door.

He's the neurosurgeon that cut a tumor out of Bruce Wayne's skull. At first, Dev was just coming around for tea with Alfred. But somehow he's now working as the doctor for the Wayne Family. And the Wayne family? Also the Batman Family.

I don’t usually recommend OC-centric fics but Dev is one of the best support characters I have ever encountered.  10/10 very good Batdoctor.

Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach (AO3) by Nnm Good Omens (TV) | Gen | Complete As soon as Aubrey Thyme, psychotherapist, had opened her office door and seen her new client, Anthony J. Crowley, sitting in her waiting area, she was observing and assessing him. At first glance, she paid attention to the following: --His clothing was expensive and stylish; --He wore very strange but noticeable cologne; --His relationship to the seat he occupied could only, very loosely, be described as “sitting;” --He looked angry; --He was wearing sunglasses. What Aubrey Thyme, a professional, thought, upon first seeing her new client was: you’re going to be a fun one, aren’t you?

Going to finish off with a little tangent (as is my wont).  Sometimes I get the sense that Deathly Weapons is built a little different from the average crossover fic, and I think part of it is that I draw a fair bit of inspiration and stylistic influence from traditionally published media across a bunch of genres.  Here are a few of those:

Works that directly influenced Deathly Weapons

The Millennium Trilogy Book Series | Mystery/ Modern Noir | Trilogy | Complete | CW: MA15+ Millennium publisher Mikael Blomkvist has made his reputation exposing corrupt establishment figures.  Enigmatic delinquent security specialist Lisbeth Salander is a genius computer hacker who tolerates no restrictions placed on her by individuals, society or the law. They were men who hated women, and she was the woman who hates men who hate women.

This is one of my favourite mystery/ crime series and provided a fair amount of inspiration for DW in terms of structural, tonal and stylistic elements (especially in chapters like the Prologue and Phenomenon).  People familiar with this series might recognise some direct stylistic homages in future chapters. Trigger warning:  This series deals heavily in subjects of bigotry (especially misogyny), abuse (personal, sexual and institutional) and violence against women, and includes explicit depictions and discussions.  MA15+, reader discretion is advised.

The Kingkiller Chronicles Book Series | Fantasy | Trilogy | Incomplete (2/3 Published) I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me

One of my favourite fantasy series, and a big inspiration in terms of prose and style as well as some character dynamics.  Fans may recognise direct homages in some of DW’s chapter titles, such as Roads to Safe Places and Ill-Lit Ships.

The Book Thief Book | Historical Fiction | CW: War, Nazism/ Antisemitism, Death It’s just a small story really, about, among other things: a girl; some words; an accordionist; some fanatical Germans; a Jewish fist-fighter; and quite a lot of thievery. I saw the book thief three times.

This book has my all-time favourite prose in terms of lyricism and imagery, as well as its ability to speak to loss and find beauty in the human condition even under horrific circumstances.  I sometimes re-read it as part of preparation for writing emotionally heavy chapters like Roads to Safe Places, and fans might recognise some direct stylistic homages.

Avatar: The Last Airbender TV Series (Animated) | Fantasy/ Martial Arts In a war-torn world of elemental magic, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous mystic quest to fulfill his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world.

What can I say about A:TLA that hasn’t already been said by a million other writers and story analysts?  I certainly took some structural and emotional cues from this show and the discussions around it when planning DW’s overarching story.

Other ones you might like

I’m going to bundle Psychonauts 2, Leverage and Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse together as I have discussed them at length in another recommendation post but if you enjoyed any of the story flavours in Young Justice Season 1 then these will probably scratch some similar itches.

If you like young adult spy stories that are played more for tension/ intrigue than fantasy then you may enjoy the Alex Rider book series.  I reread the first book, Stormbreaker, while working on the last third of the Black Gold mission.

The Bartimaeus Sequence is a very entertaining series of YA Urban Fantasy political intrigues featuring magic and demons, narrated mostly by a djinn who has some pointed comments to make about humanity.   Those who like their Urban Fantasy with intrigue/ crime elements, villain protagonists and/or banter may also like the Artemis Fowl series (YMMV on the last 2 books, which were written later and somewhat divisive for their shift in style and focus).

Speaking of morally ambiguous intrigue-heavy Urban Fantasy, the Death Note manga is a fun cat-and-mouse murder-thriller between two ruthless strategists.

Fullmetal Alchemist is another deservedly well-renowned modern fantasy manga with mystery/ political intrigue elements, which has some broad-strokes overlaps with A:TLA in terms of structure, tone and general thesis on humanity.

Spiritfarer is a cozy indie management game about dying.  This might seem like a bit of a dark horse offering but a major component of DW Arc II’s planned main character thread is about the journey through (and specificity of) grief.  If that is something you enjoy then Spiritfarer is a concentrated dose of that in an exceptionally executed, insightful, gentle and touching form, with a gorgeous soundtrack.

Another dark horse offering coming in to land (heh) is Air Crash Investigations (also known as Mayday: Air Disaster), a documentary series about aviation forensics.  As discussed here, it’s a very good example of fair-mystery style investigative storytelling grounded in human tragedy - especially from Season 11 onwards.  Fair warning: if you have issues with planes or flying then you may want to tread carefully here.

Ectoberhaunt 22- Day 4: BOX

Way before the portal to the Ghost Zone started working, Jack Fenton had a minor hiccup while building it. He hadn’t felt it important to let Maddie know, after all, he was fine, thank you, and the hiccup itself hadn’t had any significant impact on the machine as well, so…

It took him far too long to realise that maybe, just maybe, getting zapped by the ecto-technological miracle and not checking it out had repercussions on his health. When he started to develop what he would later call ‘cool superpowers’ he was…

You guessed it! Ecstatic!

After all, having superpowers over gravity and density meant he was far more equipped than the average ghost hunter to catch those dreadful spooks (that no doubt would show themselves eventually with the portal running). But work was plenty, and plenty stressful so Jack forgot to let Mads know about them. 

He thought he told her, he really did! He swears!

Cut to now.

It’s just another work-filled day and Jack needs some time to unwind. He thinks he’ll just go zero-gravity with his powers, maybe get his transformed ⁠— and what an incredible day that was when he first transformed! ⁠— blue hands on a few boxes. Maybe play some harmless pranks on those punks loitering around Target’s parking lot. Perhaps that’ll teach them not to graffiti the GAVs of innocent people with fake swirly moustaches. 

Jack Fenton’s face is not made for facial hair, okay?

In any case, Jack goes out for a zero-gravity late evening walk, vowing internally to be back for Maddie’s no doubt delicious dinner⁠— God he loves his wife! An hour and a half is more than enough to have some fun and have some time to do some gadget-to-scrap-and-remake-into-ghost-weapons shopping.

Just as predicted he finds those very same delinquents hanging out drinking diet soda ⁠— what are those kids’ parents even teaching them?! ⁠— squatting at the side of the parking lot under an old tree that has seen better days. 

“BEWARE!” he shouts in his echoey voice and zero-gravitys a few empty boxes from the recycling bin to float menacingly around him. 

The teens startle and look at him with wide eyes.

Oh, man this is going to be fun! He’s not really a ghost, could never be such an ectoplasmic scum of post-human consciousness but the kids don’t know that and he’s going to use that to teach them a lesson not to deface people’s things. 

Let’s just hope that that spook Phantom doesn’t show up to trap him in that soup thermos again…

Warmth

    Danny Phantom Fic

Gen | Danny Fenton centric with his his relationship to his parents | Sort of a what-if introspective | ~700 words

    It was hot in the house. It curled around on Danny’s shoulders and rested in the bottom of his lungs. 

    The spot on the couch was warm too. Just a little bit. His body temperature never returned to normalcy after the accident. The accident his parents were all too aware of.

    Danny had kept Phantom secret for a couple years, managing the town & its ghost invasions as easily as Doomed.  Tough at first, but no longer felt overwhelming. 

    Danny’s fingers flew effortlessly on the controller in his hands. The living room TV yawned in before him, displaying a generic fighting game. Behind, the clink of dishes reminded him that Maddie was making dinner.

    The heat settled in his stomach. 

    Danny would be one of the first people to defend his parents. Despite all their faults, they cared, and as he grew older, he came to appreciate all they had sacrificed, all they had done to make sure he and his sister had everything they needed. While admitting that outloud was one thing, Danny had allowed the thought to rest comfortably in his normally troubled mind. 

    “Danny,” Maddie called, “do you want any sausage?”

    “I’m fine.” Danny mumbled. 

    Then, his parents had found out his secret.

    ‘Found out’ was a strong word. Danny had been fed up. Fed up with his parents’ snide remarks about the humanity of ghosts. Fed up of the way his parents so routinely treated it as a science project instead of a real question that had an answer.  Fed up of concealing his ghostly features around his own home when all he wanted to do was exist as what he was without being scared. 

    So Danny told them.

    And they cried. But not for him.

    Danny supposed they had tried to understand. However, Maddie had a face he had only seen once before. Her eyebrows furrowed in determination, her face becoming red with  the strain of holding back tears as she delivered the news of her father’s death. With the news that she would never see this person she loved so dearly ever again.

    Maddie had that face with Danny. 

    But Danny was still here. He just had this part of himself that he couldn’t allow them to ignore anymore. Especially since they inadvertently campaigned for his death.

    A long talk spent justifying himself, explaining what it meant to be a ghost, pleading with them to understand that this is who he was, that he couldn’t change it. 

    Maddie had apologized. She acted like her parenting had something to do with it when that didn’t matter in the slightest.

    Jack had promised to fix it. That he would build a contraption that would cure Danny of his ghostliness.

    Neither of them understood it was something that couldn’t be changed. So when Danny refused treatment, when he told Maddie her apology wasn’t what he was asking for, his parents…couldn’t understand it.

    His parents told him that Phantom was a parasitic entity that needed to be gotten rid of. Danny refused.

    The next day, Maddie & Jack acted like the talk hadn’t happened. The same with the next day, and then the next. 

    Danny confronted them about it. 

    And Maddie told him, with that damned face, that she hoped he would come around and make the right choice about Phantom.

    Danny expected many different reactions. He saw himself gunned down and caged like an animal. He saw his parents tearing him apart for the audacity to exist as something they hated. 

    Now that he had their reaction, Danny wasn’t sure what was worse.

    If they actually did something, then Danny could be mad. He could be angry. He would know where they stood and in turn, take a stand. Like he had against so many evils before.

    However, this pseudo peace left him wavering. He couldn’t bring himself to be mad. But he couldn’t act like it didn’t hurt either. 

    His parents refused to acknowledge him.

    What was he supposed to do? When his parents were loving aside from pretending that a big part of who he was didn’t exist?

    “Dinner’s ready.” Maddie said in a sing-song voice.

    The heat wrapped around Danny’s throat and choked him.
