Being Rin's one and only best friend comes with a lot of growing pains. Whether it be constantly receiving threats from his "super fans", always having to show up to his games just to drive him back home because he insists that he's too tired to walk back, or having to hear him vent about how absolutely shitty his older brother is.

And, much to no one's surprise, that dynamic hasn't changed even after becoming one of the nation's highest-praised athletes. And yes, he still insists you to drive him because he claims that his own private drivers "suck ass".

But there are some positive outlooks of being his one and only best friend. No, it's not the fact that you get free tickets to his games or the fact that you essentially eat for free whenever you're out with him. It's nothing materialistic of that sort. One of your favorite things is that he always picks up your packages, even when you order just a bit too much.

"You're going to break your bank account if you keep this up."

"It's your birthday. How can I not celebrate?"

There's a click from his tongue. "You know I hate celebrations."

You sit up from the sofa, flashing him the tiniest of smirks. "It's just gonna be between us. I'm not planning on inviting anyone over."

Rin rolls his eyes before setting down the mountain of delivery packages onto his apartment floor. It looks to be about eight... no twelve? You honestly lost track of how many items you ordered but not like that matters now. The packages vary in size and you can tell by the scowl forming on his face that he's confused by what you have in store this year.

"They're decorations, you dumb dumb." You finally answer after watching him struggle to think.

This only deepens his scowl. "It's my birthday and you want me to decorate?"

"Oh, so now you wanna play that card? Thought you didn't care about your birthday." The kick you receive to your legs is a clear indicator that you've successfully annoyed Rin Itoshi. Which really doesn't take that much effort, but it's still fun to tease him nonetheless. "Are you gonna help me now?"

Rin opens one of the smaller boxes, pulls out a roll of blue streamers, and puffs out his cheeks slightly in frustration. "Where do I put this?"

You blink. "Have you never decorated before?"

You watch his ears turn red and he quickly responds, "I have, idiot."

"You just—" Rin struggles with the streamers and you suppress a laugh when he accidentally tears a ribbon in half. "Actually, never mind, just leave it to me."

He takes a few defensive steps back when you stand up, clutching the streamer close and dear to his chest, shooting you one of his piercing glares. "Stop, I know what I'm doing."

"For someone who's so careful about his actions in football, you sure are clumsy when it comes to anything outside of that." The scrunch on his nose only solidifies your point.

You don't quite understand how someone like Rin can have such a meticulous lifestyle but then mess up when attempting to parallel park or even fry an egg. You're mostly teasing though. Mostly. It's not like any of his "clumsy" actions bother you.

"I made a birthday card for my mom once." He says as if that's enough proof to prove that he actually does know how to decorate. "It's on her fridge."

"Yeah? The one with the shitty drawing of you and Sae hugg—"

"You can stop now."

The blue streamer rolls to the ground as you lunge forward and smack it out of his hands. Rin is annoyed, very annoyed, and attempts to playfully aim at your shin again. You let him but this time around you push him back, aiming for his chest.

Rin is taller and stronger than you are but, during times like this, he holds back just enough for you to take the upper hand. Only for a brief moment that is.

You give up as soon as he pins you beneath him on the floor. "Ok," You manage out. "You win, you win."

Rin loosens his grip on your wrists and rolls over next to you. "That's what I thought."

After what feels like an eternity laying in silence on the floor, you speak up, letting your tongue run. "You know that I’m secretly jealous of you, right?"

His body shifts slightly from your peripheral but you keep your eyes glued to the ceiling. "Jealous how?"

"I don’t know how you do it but you always end up looking like some hotshot supermodel even with all that sweat. Too bad people don’t know that you’re actually so emo that it hurts." Despite saying it in a teasing tone, your lips curve into a small sincere smile. You didn't need to see his face to know that he was also smiling.

Another kick. "Shut up, you sound so dramatic right now."

You kick back but with less force. Too tired out from the struggle earlier. "Says the guy who wants to beat up his brother over football."

Silence hangs in the air again. And suddenly you become hyperaware of his proximity, the scent from the cologne he's wearing, and how melancholic he looks from your angle.

"Are you ever scared of growing up?" Rin's sudden question makes you sit up. "I think about that more often than I like."

You tense for a moment at his words and quickly collect your thoughts, shaking your head. "There's nothing scary about growing up. Think about all the cool things you got to experience. You accomplished a lot compared to when you were sixteen."

He hums. "That's true."

"And think about all the cooler things you haven't experienced yet. Like scuba diving and shit."

"What if I can't swim?"

"Then you take swimming lessons, dummy."

"Also true." He pauses and finally sits up with you. "You'll still be around, right?" Rin stares with his usual tight line on his lips but his eyes seem to be searching for something in yours. He looks very serious and also mildly stressed out.

"Hey," You offer a hand on his shoulder and he flinches at the contact. "As long as you're around, I'm gonna be around too." You say softly.

He holds your hand in place and squeezes it. "Even when we're both old and wrinkly?"

You squeeze his shoulder in response. "Definitely gonna stick around to see that."

There’s silence again for a minute, as he thinks it over. It’s not quite as awkward of a silence, but it’s still not entirely right. You're mentally preparing for another round of existential questions from your best friend. After a moment, Rin's leaning forward, instinctively pressing closer, and there’s something happening between you two. Some weird shift taking place.

Skinship of any form isn't something that Rin is comfortable exploring with just anyone. The most that he's gotten physical with is maybe a hug but even that lasts for just a fleeting second. You find yourself reciprocating and leaning close, relishing the fact that he doesn't do this often. And soon, you feel the sudden urge to kiss your best friend.

"Hey—Rin, do you..." You stumble over your words, but the way that you say his name catches his attention.

"Yes." He cuts you off before you get a chance to finish.

Rin leans in and you meet him halfway. Your noses bump awkwardly against each other due to the height difference and it causes you to laugh. Rin looks like he wants to be embarrassed and annoyed but he ends up laughing too. You two try again, shuffling yourself closer and placing your hands on his thighs to steady yourself, and this time it's better.

There's a bit of mint aftertaste left in his mouth from the gum he was chewing earlier and you didn't know if you should feel self-cautious of your own breath because you're pretty sure it tastes like the cereal you had this morning. You quickly decide it's out of your worries when you feel his hands around your waist, pulling you closer into his lap and deepening the kiss further.

Rin calls out your name when he pulls back and you're positive that you could pass out right now if you're given the option. "Stop looking at me like that." He frowns, red sweeping his own cheeks.

You swallow hard and tilt your head. "Like what?"

"Like you're nervous to be around me. I don't want that."

You feel yourself growing small under his touch. "Then what do you want, Rin?"

He furrows his brows together and you feel his fingers toy with the fabric of your shirt. Rin does this for a while before answering, "I just want you to stay by my side for as long as you can. Is that possible?" He whispers.

"If it's impossible then I'll make it possible for you, Rin." You close the distance and rest your chin on his shoulder. "I'll give you all my seasons if you want them."

You don't hear anything from Rin but soon his grip tightens around your waist and you swear you can hear him sniffling. You pretend to not notice. God knows what he'll do if you catch him crying. Instead, you close your eyes and rub his back gently in circles.

"Happy birthday, Rin."

can i talk my shit for a moment?

i've been thinking about enhypen a lot, i actually do on a daily because i have a problem but that's a story for another time, and every time i think about certain types of "engenes" i get so, so mad and just as sad and frustrated because we're literally witnessing the way enha as a whole are slowly losing the recognition and attention for their talent because the focus is slowly shifting towards their visuals and their fan service.

i can't even explain why this makes me so mad and maybe i'm just a baby engene who's a little sensitive and protective but it's just so frustrating to see people praise enha for their visuals and fan service only when they're so, so much more.

don't get me wrong, PLEASE praise your fave for their visuals, they're the hardest on themselves and the kpop industry is so visual focused, it'll do wonders to their self confidence and esteem to hear how much their fans love their looks and styles and visuals.

it's the fact that at this point i barely ever see anyone praise any member for their actual talent. maybe i'm on the wrong side of the fandom but whenever the boys are done with a performance, they go viral for their visuals and not the actual effort, energy, time and attention they put into that performance.

seeing the comments being full of people who only praise one thing about the members is just so..heartbreaking considering just HOW hard they've worked to be where they are.

they have received titles during i-land and are still standing up to those and the high standards everyone has set for them, so seeing their fan service being what gets people into the fandom makes me so sad.

heeseung is a fucking ace, mans can sing, dance, produce, rap – he's literally known for his immense talent yet his biggest headlines somehow always included his visuals, especially with the whole nose implant shit. yes, his fan service is top tier but he's more than that short flirty moment and i hate seeing people praise him for it.

jungwon keeps on showing everyone what a good lsader he is, that he actually deserves his title as the hidden ace but people never ever give him credit for what matters. that guy loves his fans so, so much he spends hours on weverse to chat and respond and always updates us on what's going on. he's so csring and sweet and yet ever since he's become an adult its yet again, just about his looks.

i don't even wanna talk about sunoo because his situation makes me SO mad in a way i can't explain at all. that fucker is so fucking talented and so gifted, he's literally worked his ass off all these years just for people to go around and go omg he's so pretty!!! and that's it. he's not just your little mlm projection since most engenes love to label him as such, he's so much more and deserves to be treated like the talented idol he is.

sunghoon is also of that category because tell me why people have made his visuals hs only personality when he literally was told he was born to be on stage. every single performance, every single song, every single tour night he gives his everything because he knows he's good but he wants to show the world that he's more than a pretty face. i wish people would just see his talent and dedication for once instead of his eyebrows.

jay is also a topic i dont even wanna talk about anymore because the treatment he's been receiving all these years from his own "FANS" is so embarrassing and heartbreaking. i have never, ever watched a performance where that fucker didn't give 150% of his energy and power, his dedication is so impressive and something to admire. he's not just your fashion icon with a pretty face and a sharp jawline, i might upset some of y'all, but he's just as much of an ace as heeseung to me and i wish people saw that.

riki literally left his home country when he was a child and was called the dance prodigy, became a member in the official line up at the age of 14 and yet people will literally do nothing but praise his visuals. that fucker came okt of his mama dancing and people dare to argue whether or not he's as good as engenes make him to be what the FUCK? ppl need to stop focusing on his face and actually look at him as a whole when they watch him bc how could we ever argue about his talent???

jake had a dream and an opportunity and that fucker took. it. he literally only trained for six months and now his dance challenges with other idols are some of the most viewed ones on social media. he's a pretty face and the biggest flirt ever, he loves his dans and doesnt hesitate to show it but i wish people would actually see how hard he works and how far he's come. he was never bad but he's literally at such a high level right now when it comes to his skills and stage performances, i feel like people just love to ignore that aspect of him bc of his intense fan service.

i can't believe i spent 10 minutes writing this but its been on my mind for so long and i really hope we as engenes can actually sit our asses the fuck down and start showing those boys and their talent the love and appreciation they deserve. they are a group of visuals, yes. no doubt. but they were also chosen to be in this group bc of their talent and their skills.

particularly for me, his emotional dependence is so big just because he confused things with the Barbara

tldr; i ramble a little abt how i hate modern Jason fucking Todd and highlight how much justice this comic did for him

and how modern writers are just trying to turn him into a batfam insert of deadpool

Yes! I dont think Jason had 100% feelings for Babs, like he said, he thought it could work. It definitely came from a moment of weakness/vulnerability, its often that Jason doesn’t get cared for too often, not in the way he needs. So when Babs let out a hand for him, it hit him HARD. Especially with just being traumatized by the last two jokers, I think its pretty obvious he doesn’t need someone to clean up/watch after him but like need someone to generally emotionally guide him.

my personal pet peeve with most modern Jason Todd canon ships is the laziness of it(b4 i get criticized i think ANY ship with ANY CHARACTERS can be good as long as the writings GOOD and makes SENSE) . GOD NO- i dont ship jason and babs, but they still put an odd amount of effort into it, to at the very least actually flesh out their characters.

Jason doesn’t need a character that fixes his mistakes when he’s overly impulsive, or babies him, or fixes his mistakes with a veil of ‘Your so dumb but i secretly care about you!‘ because then it leads to most of lazy writing where he does something stupid but his gf is here to fix it! so its ok! NO!! HES NOT LEARNING ANYTHING!! YOURE MAKING HIM LOOK STUPID AND MENTALLY BRAIN DEAD!! anyways sorry.

Jason needs someone to break him out of his cycle of impulsiveness and self-destruction, not have him indulge in it.Jason needs to go fucking soul-searching or something im so tired of his ass— REALISTICALLY I COULDN’T DATE COMIC!JASON IF HE DIDNT CHANGE,, HE WOULD FRUSTRATE ME RLLY BAD.

ahem. anyways. I think Jasons note shows a lot about his character and something that the modern writers ignore a lot. Jason CAN change, he just needs a reason, a solid reason to. He doesn’t have to put down his code, or the guns, he just needs someone solid to really make him think about himself. “All I need is one chance to you I can be better. And I will devote my life to making you proud. Happy. Loved.” WHERE IS THIS SWEETHEART RN?? I SWEAR EVERY OTHER WRITER IS MAKING HIM A EMO FUCK-BOY WHOS BRAIN MATTER GOT SUCKED OUT THROUGH HIS COCK?? ahem sorry.

I really love how much DC actually puts details into Jason in this comic. Ex. Jasons helmets abilities being highlighted, “Helmets registering multiple security doors opening across the facility.” OR him saying the chronic pain management book was helpful. SORRY— I REALLY ENJOY DETAILS LIKE THIS. It just makes Jasons technical skill and such more obvious then whats normally stated. Also Jason tracking sea water off a wrench to the Aquarium— where is this skill in more modern comics?? I swear they make Jason a braindead wannabe deadpool sometimes i swear to fucking god. Also him shooting the shark tank so it eats Gaggy— I DIE FOR DETAILS LIKE THIS.

They don’t even get rid of his humor in 3 jokers either, he still has a really well displayed personality and his banter with Batman is really bearable for once, it makes sense and its well written. I slightly dislike how hard Babs is being on Jason but i’m not 100% sure what Babs is like. I haven’t read comics centered around her, so I don’t mind it. Also dont mistake this for me disliking babs for rejecting Jay— thats not what i mean at all. Just her constantly saying how he’s a criminal and focusing on getting him in prison like he’s an opp was confusing 2 me..

Ok one last dip into "the Izcourse" before I take my own advice and pivot to rewatching S1 in prep and posting about what I love!

We get a lot of trolls, and harassers, and staunch antis looking to pick a fight with the "bad fans" who either drop bait or jump on people's posts to be annoying. That's the flame war part of all this mess. But we also get a fair number of posts from "neutral" people that I want to gripe about for a moment because at least the antis are misrepresenting "what Izzy fans believe / discuss" because they are actively against my take on the show for whatever reason. But it's more annoying to me personally when it's just... a lack of effort.

(And I've mentioned this before)

Like... a "neutral" observer weighing in on "The Izcourse" is a member of the general fandom who doesn't care enough about Izzy to really be an anti. Their perspective on the matter is coming from directly or indirectly following people in the antis' main meta circle. We know this, because just about every neutral person who was not from this background got classified as an Izzy apologist / problematic Edward thoughtcrimer and they are counted as in "the Canyon" now. We watched it happen a lot over the past year and a half. So the observer is not neutral, not really, but they probably aren't heavily blocking / blocked if they don't care and don't talk about Izzy.

Which makes it so frustrating when they feel the need to bring up "concerning" trends among Izzy fans and their interpretations and then they don't know what those interpretations are.

Like - in the most patient tone I can possibly manage - scrolling a bit of the Izzy Hands tag and taking fans squeeing about their blorbo as evidence there is no nuance in meta and too much babygirlifying here is dumb as fuck. Hell, even isolating a recent meta post and going "well I don't agree with this because XYZ" is still very much a "so what?" situation because that one person is not representing all Izzy fans? And also you still have a huge blind spot.

Because meta is - at its core - a collaborative structure.

You can't experience a particular branch of meta primarily through people vaguing or screenshotting and dunking on whatever looks the worst, then skim a little bit of a tag and be able to confidently call out what the "problematic trends" are. You can't even understand where the random meta you singled out is coming from, because you don't know which posts they've been looking at for over a year. And this is all really highlighted by the fact when you go to dissect that post you disagree with, you'll do it by just saying things that you understand to be established, well-defended facts from your own circle of meta and not back them up at all. Because in your mind you don't need to! And yet the post you're disagreeing with won't make sense because they are just assuming things and talking about this fanon version of Izzy you don't recognize. 🤷‍♀️

(This is why my typical meta post is linking to three separate discussions, lol. I'm building off of things said before like basically every meta writer, but I want those things referenced.)

If you aren't going to actually put in the effort to identify which blogs are the "major players" and then go back through tags or their popular posts or whatever to get an actual idea of what the meta structure Izzy Canyon has spent over a year discussing contains, then at least don't disparagingly comment on those people and discussions while lumping them into one "problematic" hive mind??? You don't know what you're talking about because you didn't care, and that's whatever. Just please stop confidently conflating random blog #7's generally happy post about how "i can't wait for my fave little guy to have friends 💕" with a concerning lack of discussions on Izzy's relationship with the crew.

My "#ofmd meta" tag - among others - is full of almost exclusively Izzy Canyon blogs writing complex posts about all sorts of things from romcom genre conventions to POC fans' takes on Edward's cptsd, and it's beyond annoying to see them repeatedly insinuated to have the depth of a puddle because the antis prefer to pile on a headcanon about Izzy reading and turn it into an insult to Edward's intelligence, and all the "neutral" blogs take it as gospel.

I'm also a queer black adult. There's a difference between spending money for sources of comfort vs needlessly spending stuff to flex status in very childish ways. We definitely see that as we boycott all these companies. Would the latest iPhone be nice? I guess, but it ain't that impressive to support Congo's genocide. Is that Stanley cup cool? Honestly not really, and it definitely ain't worth supporting another genocide for. Even ofmd, it really wasn't that important for queer media or even black queer media, which a lot of Black shows were also canceled at the same time. No one talks about how important black rep is here though. Despite this, however, you are not seeing black people gather funds for a billboard for a show unless we talking about blm. Because that's more important than getting a show back on the air as a flex. So we as adults can recognize the bizarre message we see when people are out here begging for help, and dismissed as scammers. But the moment a donation post for a billboard gets put up to get a show back to production, it meets its up almost instantaneously. As an adult I literally study these kinds of phenomenons in our capitalist society. I'm not sending this message to come at you because you are not the only one who does this, and I certainly am forced to partake in capitalism. But I do want to share that these are the "adult" conversations people are going to have and question. For as many "we can support both ofmd and Palenstine" I read here, I see the same bloggers attacking Palestinians and Black people for rightfully being upset that they certainly do not "do both" with the same amount of passion

Thing is? I don't disagree with almost anything you said, and the frustration is real. The disparities are real. I've been on the other side of that and needed support and seen whose fundraisers met their goals quicker than mine did. All of that is real and under ideal circumstances, yeah, the billboard people could have handled all this better.

I think the differences in where I come at all this from is that:

I watched the live feed of the billboard for a minute, and people put all kinds of less-than-important shit on it. So when I see people talking about how wrong the billboard is I just remember the like, graduation-announcement-level other stuff that was on it for the same price. I'm not saying the idea still didn't rub me wrong but I am saying that put it into perspective for me at least.

This show has changed lives, which may sound silly, but that's art sometimes. There are people whose lives are better and bigger and more authentic than ever before because of this weird mix of kindness and space to be queer that isn't like anything I've ever seen before. I understand that not everyone had such an impactful experience with it but I've found that incredibly moving and valuable and worth the fight for a 3rd season.

More than anything else, I value the efforts to get the show renewed because it feels like a watershed moment in the TV and streaming industries, and things will only get worse from here. I'm aware of all the Black shows that got canceled before OFMD did but a lot of the time people only care when something comes for their shows, and now we've got a a bunch of agitated white gays (who to be clear to everyone except the asker, are NOT the show's sole audience so please stop talking about it that way) who we can and should be pushing to include Rap Sh!t and Love Life etc. when talking about all this. Because it does represent a trend that's coming for everybody, it just started with going after POC and queers first. FWIW I actually did make a post the other day aimed at OFMD people to try to get them talking about the Black shows that were canceled first. (I deleted the original post because my notifications were killing me but reblogs of it should still be floating around out there)

I'm not out here trying to say that people's perfectly understandable frustrations are invalid, it just has felt inconsistent the way a lot of (almost entirely white) self-styled leftists have been coming after OFMD as if it's uniquely horrible.

When BIPOC object to the disparities Asker pointed out, I lift that up and value it. There are things I might say in other forms of this conversation that I would have with other BIPOC away from prying eyes that might surprise you. But right now there's too much noise in this conversation from people who don't actually give a fuck about any of their talking points, they just see an opportunity to dunk on a cringe fandom or they're operating with incomplete/incorrect information about things or in the least surprising/most transparent move of all, they're projecting a bunch of inaccurate shit onto Taika and using it to criticize him in as pattern that's familiar and obvious to every POC watching it happen. That's not what I think you're doing or anything Asker, but it's important context for the conversation we could/should be having and something that keeps getting left out of the conversation.

OUTLANDER EPISODE 702: Two villains meet their untimely ends

Watching the second episode of season 7, I realize how much I've missed the show. They packed a lot into this episode. There were all the feels associated with Amanda's birth, the MacKenzie family saying goodbye to Jamie & Claire, Wille and Bree meeting at last, and Jamie severing his relationship with Lord John because of the war.

But there was plenty of dark drama too, starting with Allan Christie's confession and death, and ending with the Big House on fire.

So I thought I'd take some time to dissect the tangled paths that led two Outlander villains to their deaths in this episode--and to consider the choices that some Outlander protagonists made regarding these villains.

Ian's Retribution for the death of the "bairn" he once thought was his

Episode 702 started with a death, which proved to be apt foreshadowing for its ending.

Allan Christie's death in this episode is very much like the one in the book. Alexander Vlahos brought a good mixture of sleaziness, despair, and infantile anger to his portrayal of Allan.

Cait deftly portrayed Claire's enormous frustration at being put in a situation where she had to stop a man from killing himself, whom she probably wished would die for his crimes.

Finally, John Bell as Ian fully embodied his role as a Mohawk warrior. He was believable in how he stolidly disposed of Allan for having killed the "bairn" he had originally thought was his, but which he still thought "deserved to live." There was nary a sign of the carefree, mischievous lad Ian used to be. (Sadly there was also nary a sign of the boy who was distraught when he thought he accidentally killed someone in the print shop fire.)

Allan Christie was a horrible human being, who had gotten away for years with the incest of his sister Malva, and eventually with Malva's murder and the death of her unborn bairn. [The flashbacks illustrated the creepy brother-sister story perhaps too well--I was extremely uncomfortable watching them.]

Furthermore, Allan's attempt to hide his guilt almost resulted in Claire being hung for a crime for which she was innocent. It also indirectly led to his father's sacrifice to protect Claire.

Still, Claire, ever the physician who takes her oath to preserve life seriously, went above and beyond the call of duty by wrestling the gun away from Allan before trying to talk him out of suicide.

But Claire's valiant efforts were in vain because Ian made the decision to step in and grant Allan his death wish.

Ian's code of justice comes from both the Scottish Highlands and the Mohawk nation; therefore, he does not appear to have any qualms about taking the life of a murderer.

But there are issues I had with Ian's decision, besides the ones I have about his playing judge, jury, and executioner.

Although I agreed with Claire's decision to try to stop Allan from killing himself, I had issues with Claire's suggestion to Allan that he run away.

What I wished had happened is that Ian and Claire had worked together to take Allan to justice. In doing so, they could have cleared Tom's name. Even if they believed that Tom was dead, his memory deserved not to be tainted by a murder he did not commit.

However, I do appreciate that Claire felt that Tom's sacrifice had also (probably unwittingly) spared his son from having to die for Malva's murder. I don't think Tom knew that his son had killed Malva, but the end result was that Allan was free. Claire clearly thought it would have been a waste of Tom's sacrifice, if his son took his life.

Yet, I still wish that Ian in particular had chosen a different course of action, one that didn't involve Ian and Claire having to dispose of the body.

The irony could not have been lost on Claire that she had just escaped from an unjust charge of murder for one Christie, only to go on to help Ian cover up the murder of another Christie.

Both Claire and Ian were lucky that Mrs. Bug decided to help them rather than turn them in.

Wendigo Donner: The man who lost his moral compass in an uncaring past

We saw Roger in episode 701 meet Wendigo Donner, another time traveler, who had come back to help the 18th century indigenous people avoid the genocide that was to come. Unfortunately, Donner's plans went awry, and he ended up becoming a criminal, who didn't do anything to help Claire when she was kidnapped.

Brennan Martin as Donner did a good job of showing just enough of the decent man that Donner used to be to get the kind-hearted Roger to take pity on him.

Fortunately, Bree talked some sense into Roger, and he decided not to help Donner. We don't know what Donner would have done, if Roger had helped him to escape. But most likely, the end result would have been the same.

Despite Donner's crimes, Roger was sympathetic to him, because he felt guilty for some of the things he himself felt compelled to do (or not do) after going through the stones.

Still, Roger never lost himself to despair, anger and selfishness like Donner did. That's because the love of Bree, Jemmy, Claire, and Jamie helped to provide him with a moral compass as he confronted many of the hardships of living in the past. (It probably also helped that Roger was a minister's adopted son.)

Although it is clear that Donner had unselfish motives to travel to the past to help the indigenous people, when he arrived in the 18th century he was truly alone. The rest of "the Montauk Five" weren't with him--or weren't alive.

Unfortunately, unlike Roger, Donner never found a caring group of people in the 18th century to provide him with a moral compass to help him avoid losing his way, as he struggled with the difficulties of living in the past.

Over time, whatever concern Donner had for others took a back seat to his own needs, gradually corrupting him, and tragically leading to this:

The Big House finally did burn down on December 21, 1776. Not on January 21, 1776 as had been recorded. The colonial newspaper had gotten the date wrong.

The epicenter of all that the Frasers had built on the Ridge went up in smoke with the careless lighting of a match. A match that didn't belong in the 18th century, wielded by a man who didn't belong there either.

Still, I'm glad the show's writers made one change from the book in this scene. In the book, it was Ian who lit the match and accidentally caused the ether to explode (after Donner and his gang had been captured).

But it is far more fitting that the show's writers decided to literally show that it was Donner and his selfishness that ultimately made everything go up in flames at the end of his life--and of this episode.

It was odd, to say the least. Being a ghost meant Jack did not have to worry about a lot of things his Sunshine had to. It meant he didn't have to think about eating or even working out to keep his physique.

One would think it'd be the ideal dream- not having to put in a bit of effort to look as good as he did.

Yet here he was, almost wishing there was a point to it. He hated not having to actually do anything. It was frustrating.

Picking idly at the corner of a box in the backroom, he listened in on his Sunspot as they talked to customers.

"Thank you again for visiting Popov's Big Top Yogurtopia!"

He sighed.

If only they could spend time talking to me...

It was selfish, sure, but what else was he supposed to do?

They were out there working hard to support themselves while he...

All he could do was hang around and offer covert help and company. It left him feeling a little useless at times like these when he could do nothing but stand around silently. He really wanted nothing more than to talk to his Sunshine, but he didn't want to distract them from their work either.

With lightning quick reflexes, he cought a bottle of syrup he accidentally elbowed just as it was halfway to the floor. He carefully put it back in its spot. Stepping away and folding his hands behind his back, he walked towards the center of the room. Best to not make a mess if he could help it- his Sunshine would be the one stuck cleaning it, and he'd feel extra bad if they had to do extra work because of him.

As Carol walked to the back, he could tell the sounds out in the lobby had quieted down some. Taking a chance, he headed out there to check on his Sunshine and see if they needed anything.

They were wiping off the counter as the last of the customers were heading out the door. They noticed him and shot him a quick smile, which he returned.

Although he knew they shouldn't talk, he couldn't stop himself from saying something anyway.

"Pretty busy today, huh?"

They sighed and nodded. Looking around to make sure they were alone, they dropped their head and spoke quietly. Though he didn't necessarily like invading his Sunshine's privacy, he had to take a mental peek to follow along with what they were saying.

"It wouldn't be so bad if Carol could just pull her weight."

Jack understood that. Trying to cover the work of two people wasn't exactly fair to anyone, much less his special little Sunspot.

"Is there anything I could do in the back? I don't mind helping, especially if it can get you out at the end of your shift quicker."

They tapped their chin while they thought, mind running through their work's daily chore list. It wasn't much, but there was some prep work in the back that could be done. Nuts to be chopped, syrup bottles to be labeled, topping containers to be filled...

"As long as you're alone back there, have at it. Need me to show you how to do anything?"

Jack shook his head.

"I've got a good idea of what to do from watching you do it."

They nodded, having to cut the conversation short as another customer came walking through the doors. He took his leave, slipping back into the backroom while nobody was likely to notice the door moving.

Quietly, Jack went about gathering what he needed to start with chopping the nuts. It was slow going, if only because he was worried about Carol comimg back through at any moment. He didn't need to scare the woman off of working here ever again.

His hand hovered over the knife in its holder.

If Carol was taken care of though...

Tempting, but not only would it have to be done elsewhere, her being gone would certainly mean even more work for his Sunshine. More work meant less time to spend together.

As aggrivating as Carol's existence was to him, she was of more use to him alive as loathe as he was to admit it.

The back door creaked open just as he was about to grab the knife, causing him to freeze.

Carol was back.

While there was no indication of where she had been, she seemed a little bit in better spirits. Walking up to the door leading to the front, she stopped short. She messed up her hair some and produced the fakest cough Jack could ever recall hearing. Poking her head through, she croaked out something about being sick and having to go home.

Sick? Sick?! The nerve of her to-

Jack closed his eyes and steadied his breathing.

Furious almost didn't begin to cover how he felt about her skipping out on the rest of her shift. Leaving his precious Sunspot to deal with it on their own as far as they knew?! If only he could have said anything to her...

But as he was silently seething she slid out the back door after clocking out with a speed he'd never seen her possess before.

If only she could do her job with such efficiency...

Carol was the only other one closing today beside his Sunspot.

Guess it would be him and his Sunspot now.

"I suppose I better get to work then. These nuts aren't going to chop themselves!"

Something really cool about Revengence is how you don’t need to play the other games that are connected to that universe to understand it. Backwards references are kept to a minimum or briefly explained. Its great!

But

Sometimes I see just the most unaware analysis of the characters, from an in universe perspective. Like, you know that Raiden doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and I know that, but do they? Except this isn’t really about Raiden.

This is about my most hated nemesis… This is about Armstrong!!!!

Sure they’ll compare him to real life former presidents, but they won’t even bother comparing him to the other main antagonists!! They’ll focus on his philosophy, but not how its actually connected to the series. Say what you want about Solidus (encouraged behavior) but his philosophy seemed oddly faithful in the American people. Armstrong just has faith in the strong because he thinks he’s strong.

I’ve only rarely seen comparison of Armstrong’s status as a soldier to Raiden’s, about how he chose to join the military vs Raiden actually being forced into combat repeatedly.

This is just me being frustrated at YouTube video essays about Revengence lately. The games not just in a void! It relates to the other games I promise! Just because it wasn’t made by Kojima doesn’t mean its standalone! I promise!!

You have wonderful and thoughtful analysis that goes beyond the surface level. I’d watch a video essay if you made it. I’d watch a slideshow of Raiden pictures if you made it, because I know you’d put consideration into it.

and yeah i like where you're going with the idea of comparing him to solidus in particular. because solidus actually believed very firmly in this idealized vision of the united states, but armstrong wanted to burn it all to the ground to create his own vision of utopia--a vision that is only a utopia for him because he's never known what it's like to not be at the top of the pile.

which is the point raiden makes really well in my opinion. armstrong DOESN'T know anything about what it's like to actually have a hard life and he's just parroting the idea of 'pulling yourself up by your bootstraps' when he's never had to do anything like that. it's easy to say things like 'but you did survive! with your own two hands, you took back your life!' because he's never faced anything like the kind of things raiden's been through since he was a child. he doesn't understand what that survival cost, or how raiden really wasn't able to 'take back [his] life'--because armstrong is at the head of the pack. armstrong is in a position of power, and on top of that, he's helping desperado with their efforts to put innocent children through the same things that solidus and the patriots did to raiden. he's completely separated from the average individual and it shows. his idea of a perfect society would only be perfect for people like him.

which is another one of the reasons why people actually comparing raiden and armstrong rather than contrasting them is so egregiously absurd. for one thing, it's like you said--armstrong chose his path in life, whereas raiden's has been chosen for him from the beginning. but it goes a lot deeper than that, too. sure, they're both fighting for their own set of ideals, but raiden's ideals involve protecting the weak and making sure society is good for everyone, not just the rich and powerful, whereas armstrong's ideals involve crushing the weak under his heel in order to improve things for himself. people talk about him like he's some kind of revolutionary thinker, but that's honestly just plain wrong. in the end armstrong talks a lot about burning everything to the ground, but his ideals don't really change the status quo. after all, think about what it is he wants to create--whether he says it in so many words or not, his end goal is a world where those with money and power change the law as it suits them, to hell with everyone else. and doesn't that sound just a bit familiar?

I was watching Alex's interview at German Con and something caught my attention, when he said "I'm not really good at celebrating myself". It reminded me a lot of what has been said here on the blog, that he always makes himself look smaller and smaller in front of Johanne (and before that, some of his friends. But, I have to say, it seems to me that Johanne's presence has increased his low self-esteem and even some insecurity, or is it simply a major coincidence?). To me, that explains the odd change in his profile picture, the apparent sloppiness with which he has been presenting himself, how he no longer seems to take care of himself, how tired he looks, how his features are drained, etc. There must be some connection between these things.

I wonder where this feeling comes from, since in other situations he is extremely confident and gives off this impression of being a self-assured person.

Something that has been talked about on the blog recently, and which made sense to me, is that maybe he feels down and unmotivated at the moment due to his lack of work? We can't know for certain whether he is actually working on something as we speak, but last year wasn't a good one for him, career wise. The series and movie he participated in were released ("Darkness — Those Who Kill" & "Nattevagten", respectively), but these were both small roles, none of them granting him that much recognition, and even himself didn't really promote "Nattevagten" that much. Then there's "Call Me Dad", a series he seemed to be really proud of and happy to be working on, since he wrote it together with Magnus and they seemed to have put a lot of effort into getting it made, only for its release date to keep being postponed over and over again, and no one knows when or if it will ever be released. It must have felt frustrating and disappointing. For someone as promising as Alex, who showed so much talent and hard work in "Vikings" and who dreamed of working in "Star Wars", maybe he feels unfulfilled at the moment and is struggling with self worth? So maybe he's now channeling his energy and knowledge into helping his girlfriend succeed (like with the podcast, for example). Maybe that would explain why he seems to "hide" behind her & this relationship nowadays? Just a thought, of course. 😊

The next year would be filled with happy moments and sad ones. Valentine had reintegrated into the spider society quite well. She still spends most of her days in the lab. But occasionally when needed she would put on the suit. Miguel tried to convince her to wear her original suit or make a new one, but she would insist that she needs to redeem Scarlette web. If not in her universe then in others.

There was one such mission where she had joined Miguel. There had been a particular Mysterio variant has been showing up repetitively, causing troubles for everyone. It had been something they had been trying to figure out. How did this anomaly keep showing up, what does it want? So many questions, Miguel and Val had spent many hours, sometimes late into the night trying to figure it out.

“He must be planning something in particular, and he must have some kind of way to move across the multiverse, some kind of Gizmo of his own? I mean he has to have something because half the time we don’t catch him and he ends up in another universe” She says to him as they sit in his living room. Since starting this endeavor together Valentine had been spending most nights at Miguel’s penthouse after long hard days, chasing this Mysterio around the multiverse.

“That’s what we have to assume, but all our investigations in his home universe have turned up nothing unusual so far.” Miguel half grumbles as he leans back in his seat running his fingers though his hair. He felt the weight of the situation hon his shoulders. It was so frustrating, not to have an answer, not even the smallest amount of a clue. He looks over at Valentine, sitting on his couch with her legs pulled up to her chest, resting her chin on her knees. He smiles softly as she looks so deep in thought. They had managed to grow close again after all this time. It hadn’t been easy, Valentine frequently had doubts about herself and her place in everything, it took him a lot of time and effort to convince her to even try hero-ing again. it was still going to take time to convince her she’s not a burden on him, or anyone for that matter. He thought back to about a month ago when he went with her to her universe.

“You really don’t have to come with me…I can handle it.” Valentine wanted to return to visit her Miguel’s grave on the anniversary of his death.

“I know you can but, I’d feel better if I went with you.” Because you could use again He didn’t say it but he thought it, He was terrified he’d loose her again. She smiles at him.

“Alright, But you’re going to have to watch from a distance, I don’t think we could explain to the others why you look exactly like my dead husband.” She chuckled. She was supposed to Meet Cherry and the other members of “Scarlets web” at the cemetery. It’ll be the first time they’d seen each other since the funeral. Valentine was nervous, these used to be people who were like family to her. Now she hardly knows them. Miguel nodded at her request.

“That’s…fair. I don’t know how we would explain that either.” He smiles back at her. They portal to her universe, and Miguel watches from afar as Valentine kneels at the grave stone of this universes version of him. He couldn’t help but feel slightly nervous as his ruby eyes scan the area.

“Hey Tiger.” Valentine says softly as she brushes the dirt from the stone. “Couldn’t miss this now could I?” Just as she says this she feels a hand on her shoulder. Valenitne turns to see familiar bright red hair.

“Hey Val.” Cherry says with a smile. “its been a while.” Valentine gets up and hugs her friend.

“Yeah…yeah it has.”

Miguel was about to say something about the time, or maybe finally say something meaningful when both their Gizmo’s start going off.

“Mysterio got out of the containment.” Valentine says with annoyance.

“Dios Mio. Never a moment’s peace.” Miguel groans. Using his gizmo to materialize his suit he starts for the door. “I’ll get a head start on him you go to HQ and see if anyone is around to help.”

Open Shelving in the Kitchen—Yay or Nay?

Watch any home improvement show from the last several years, and you’ll see it: open shelving in the kitchen. But is this trend something you should embrace in your own space? 

Does it have staying power or will it wither away once people come to terms with its lack of function? Will you love it or regret it if you rip out all your upper cabinets? Those are the questions we’re posing today as we examine the pros and cons of open shelving.

Rise in popularity

If it seems like open shelving is everywhere, that’s because it is. “Open shelving is one the most popular—and also the most controversial—kitchen trends of recent years,” said Apartment Therapy. 

Some kitchens, in an effort to look updated and open, have eliminated upper cabinets entirely, integrating open shelving instead. Others utilize the trend more marginally, replacing just one or two smaller sections of upper cabinets. If you are wary of converting your entire kitchen to open shelving, this is a good starter. 

Another way to get your feet wet is to simply remove the front of your cabinets instead of taking them down all together. This way, you can get the look without a major change, and you can always put the doors back on when the fad eventually passes.

Light, airy, and open

That’s what a lot of people are looking for when they make the decision to go with open shelving. And it works—sometimes too well. Getting rid of all the typical upper cabinets can sometimes make a space look too minimalist. “Open shelving can also look a bit… unfinished,” said Apartment Therapy.

Showcasing the goods 

Then again, it’s a great way to highlight china, nice dishes, or décor items. 

Highlighting a mess

Of course, that requires you to have china, nice dishes, or décor items, and to be able to display them in some kind of orderly fashion–instead of like a typical home where bowls may be mismatched, or at least stacked unevenly. 

But, if you’re seeking a way to get motivated to have a clean and orderly kitchen, this could help. “If you’re looking for a built-in, training-wheel kitchen setup to help ensure that you stay organized, then open shelving might be a good idea,” said HGTV. “The trick is: you have to commit to keeping things neat so you can avoid having your kitchen look like a hot-mess yard sale.”

It’s dusty in here

Regardless of what your dishes look like, they’re likely to get dusty without the benefit of being behind closed doors. “While we love looking at neatly arranged dishware on an open shelf, the reality can be a bit frustrating. Namely, due to all the dust and grease that end up on the carefully-arranged plates, bowls, mugs and glassware,” said House Beautiful. In fact, the site is so adamant about its stance on open shelving that the trend made its list of “9 Trendy Home Features That Are Secretly a Pain.”

Story Pile: Inside Job

I guess it’s hard to recommend Inside Job. I mean not in the broadest way, where I can just say ‘it’s a funny adult comedy that doesn’t seem to venerate being a selfish asshole, and it looks like a lot of them these days, with the same general level of competence.’ It’s you know, the way that Rick and Morty pissed on its aesthetic to mark its territory and now any animation that puts in too much effort or has lines that are too clean winds up being seen as ‘like that.’

I don’t know if Inside Job is like that, because I haven’t seen Rick and Morty past the opening of the first episode. Didn’t jam with it, and instead watched other stuff I found more engaging instead. Like Inside Job!

No, what makes it hard to recommend is, and, like, reader – can I call you reader? – sure, okay, reader, the thing is, this is a shortish TV series that draws on modern mythologies of the conspiracy theory griftscape in which I grew up. It uses the ongoing behaviour of an overachieving conspiracy theorist father who doesn’t respect his kid as a plot point. One character idolises toys and franchises from the 80s because it lets him pretend he has an idealised family life that was fun. Oh, and the main character, Reagan, feels like an export of one of my friend’s OCs so closely that she uses Reagan gifs for reactions.

The series doesn’t feature a long form sequence of a character beating a priest to death or a thesis about how game play lets us choose our identities, but like, it’s otherwise hits pretty close to me individually.

Okay, like, it’s a great show! And when I say that it’s just as a sort of puzzle-box version of ‘I liked the experience of watching this show’ so you don’t feel you need to untether that and pick through all the possible permutations of what that might mean by me liking the show so instead we stamp on these labels like ‘good’ or ‘great,’ since I mean, I do think I can give you that ballpark of a generality of how good media is, how, you know, you can’t just necessarily think that media is ‘good’ in and of itself, but when I say ‘it’s good’ you know pretty much what I mean by that, within some bumpers. It’s not going to drop a random slur or something into the conversation, right, and of course, as a conspiracy theory based piece of media there’s going to be a heaping help of Let’s Be Very Clear This Isn’t About The Jews in all the jokes and the structures around those jokes.

It brings in Jeff Bezos for a cameo, then makes him look like a big dumb shithead, which sure, that’s some ‘acceptable billionaire targets’ and it doesn’t matter really, like it’s not praxis or anything but it is nice to watch a mainstream show that goes ‘you know, yeah, billionaires suck and we don’t need to invent one as an example.’ That’s in an episode that makes fun of how much Flat Earthers suck, and I think it’s a bit of a missed opportunity that it doesn’t make a point of how religious Flat Earthers tend to be,

Wait, you didn’t know that?

Oh yeah, like even the most science-brained of flat earthers typically, even for a diffuse group like them, you scratch the surface and you find frustrated catholics and antisemetic fundamentalist christians (but I repeat myself) just waiting underneath, all mad that a literal interpretation of certain phrases in the Bible doesn’t actually coincide with reality (because hey, that happens).

Uh anyway where was I,

Oh yeah like, there’s stuff about James Bond? And how that whole story, like, the whole point of James Bond as the movies depict him, is counter-conspiracy against conspiracy? Right? Like doom lasers and secret bases and all that stuff, that’s conspiracy theory guff, and James Bond is a government counter-conspiracy operative. He can do all sorts of goofy stuff, go where he wants, all his toys and tools? Same thing, conspiracy theory ‘hey, we have this tech we just can’t let the public have it yet.

And then, since he’s part of that space, Inside Job has episodes about what an absolute ass James Bond would be to interact with! It’s pretty funny, especially in the ways it draws parallels between rivalries and relationships and how, y’know, when you – when you – I mean, if you draw them down to their base parts, a lot of how we talk about and engage with relationships, romantic ones, tends to be built out of a language that’s used for conflict and harm. Pretty fucked up when you think about it, but like, not made as a hard point. It’s pretty cool, I liked that episode a lot too.

It was almost as good as how the episode about the 1980s seems really different to those people who grew up promised what they offered and never got it versus all the people who were excluded even from that promise. I mean I didn’t get all of it, because I was too young in the eighties and mostly spent my nineties in a cult that meant I uh, didn’t learn much about 80s culture, but still! It even has a great outburst, too!

Uh what else

What else…

Oh, Alex Hirsch is in it and he’s really funny for his few short scenes.

Like, I don’t know, I feel like all you really need to know about Inside Job is either that it exists, because Netflix haven’t done a good job of making sure anyone knows about it, or you already knew it existed but were afraid it was Just Another One Of Those Shows, and I’ll admit it, it is a show where a woman shouts SUCK MY DICK! at her coworkers before going to contemplate how much easier her work would be if she could just control all of their neurons. It’s not like it’s not wearing its Millenial Edgy But Not That Edgy interests on its sleeve or nothing. But you saw a pitch like conspiracy theory based adult cartoon comedy focusing on an autistic girl who rules and you probably started looking for a torrent before reading the rest of the article, or you were never going to.

I fell in love with someone who is going to leave.

I met her at the wrong time. I have finally recovered from my previous relationship, finally I don't feel the burden of having a broken heart, I was so done. Then I met her. What I thought would be a day of fun turn out to be different. I got to know her and she felt genuine and different her eyes when she look at me is so bright honestly its wonderful. After getting to know her for a few days I have fallen in love with her. I don't know why but being with her feels different maybe I have deep insecurities and being with her feed my ego? Idk honestly all this feels really fuzzy I'm not too sure how to proceed with this, Like the title said she only have a few days left before she leave to go back to her own country.

as time pass I felt like she is not interested, I think she got bored with me, well it could means that she is not invested, excited or comfortable in talking to me, but its okay, I can't force her anyways, Sometimes she don't send me a text for the whole day if I don't text her. I'm getting tired waiting for her to be honest. I feel like I am the one who is putting in the effort it feels like she does not care.

I should have just left and never look back but she calls me at random and convince me that she is busy. I sometimes find it hard to believe as when I'm with her she always have her phone on her hands without fail. I know a lot of times she purposely is ignoring my text. I also notice that she have a few unread text in her msg app. Maybe she have a bad habit of reading text only when she have the intention to reply? I honestly can't understand.

Sometimes I felt like she is seeing someone else? maybe she is... I was not that surprised to be honest considering what she is doing. I thought I was the special one.. But it seems I'm not... I wanted to ask her but suddenly its so hard to even see her or talk to her, Was I sad? of course.. some days she showed that she cares about me but the next day she treat me like nothing I was still holding on to that hope maybe I was wrong, Maybe she really is busy.

All that aside I wanted her last day here to be specially memorable, I wanted to make a lasting impression even if its just for a moment.

but

She ghosted me, She ignored me and left just like that... Why? who knows? But I was completely broken and shattered, After all that it wasn fair to me...

I tried my best.. But it was not enough.

This past few days have been miserable. I have lost all appetite for anything, I feel like drowning myself. well not literally... But I guess this is how life is huh.. too bad for me then

Even after all that I'm still willing to forgive her.

In the end I got myself hurt.

UPDATE

I do miss her sometimes, but she is so unpredictable.

Should I just stop talking to her? But I still have lots to ask her. She can't give me an answer she needs time. Maybe I should stop seeking for the answer. In the end she left me with a broken heart. I thought I have got over it but deep inside I'm still hurting. I really don't know what to do. I don't even know how I will feel when I see her again. I watched her give up on me, I think that changed me, That shit broke me.

It does frustrate me sometimes,

I wakes up

all alone

goes to work

while my feelings is battling itself

I got home and I got hit with more.

sometimes I rather stay up all night in the gym or cafe or anywhere where i'm not by myself as to not overthink :(

I need get away from all this and decompress.

I feel so sad sometimes that this happens.

What I felt when I'm alone

Overthinking, Tired of being unwanted, Need a hug, Falling apart, Angry, Crying Inside,

I only have this blog to keep me sane.

Somedays I wish I could relieve the moment I spend with her.

Do I regret? well.

I wish I never liked her.

I wish I didn't waste all those time talking to her or thinking about her. I wish didn't worry or cared about her, I wish I didn't cared about all those times she ignored me. I wish I never got excited everytime she made me feel special, I wish I never believed every word she said, Because in the end, the one that got hurt isn't her. But it's me.

But then I will never say I regret her or I wish I never met her, Because honestly, truthfully at that point of time she is what I needed, exactly what I wanted... And even though things didn't turn out the way that I envisioned them to.. even though she never loved me the way I wanted her to.. But still she makes me happy. She is the reason what I looked forward to. She is the reason why I strive for success.

This put me to tears..

I like to think if we never speak again, You will look back on me fondly as somebody that loved you the best they could even if its not what you wanted or needed.. I like you to think of me as somebody that you could spent your life with If only the timing had been right.. If only we work on it a bit harder.

I'm sorry If I won't meet you but I always miss you.

I won't say this to you but I always loved you.

I'm sorry if I ever hurt your feelings

2022 H1 Reflection

Today is 17th July 2022.

This is the first time in a few years where I haven’t set any New Year’s Resolutions … this is because I was feeling pretty down during the first 3-4 months of the year. It’s hard to explain but I just felt really low and frustrated, and at one point I wondered if I was depressed … Looking back, I don’t think I was, but it was a new kind of low that I’ve never experienced before, and I think these are the reasons why:

- Covid situation not getting better, so I felt really claustrophobic because I felt that I couldn’t really see the light at the end of the tunnel. 2020 was okay because everything was new and chaotic, 2021 was also okay because I understood that the world needed time to heal and recover and slowly ease back into things, BUT THEN in 2022 there were still new variants popping up and Bangkok was still semi-lockdown and I obviously had to stay cautious.

- Seeing my friends go on exchange abroad also made me feel bad about myself at times. Of course I was happy for them and glad to see them having fun, but at the same time it highlighted the contrast between my lives and theirs in terms of freedom and going out/living life Covid-free. It made me think things like: what am I doing with my life?

- My job was not fulfilling. I couldn’t help but get frustrated by the lack of work I was given. To be fair, this frustration was a gradual accumulation since August 2021 … so I guess after 5 months or so I was at peak frustration. It was hard because its not something I can directly control, and yes I’ve tried to find other ways to be productive during those free hours, but its still not the same. I felt like I was so eager and energetic to learn and do things, but I was being treated like an intern. Its even harder because everyone is so nice, and I could really see that they had a lot on their plate … I understood that assigning more work to me also requires more time and effort from them. Also, it seemed like all the other trainees were working really hard and had many things to do. So I kinda feel my impatience and annoyance was justified.

- Another reason is I think my acne patch project was going by really slowly. It’s not that me and my partner don’t want to do it, but I guess we both have other responsibilities and commitments to do in life, so its not always easy to share the same “bursts of motivation and proactiveness” to get things done. It’s really not easy to consistently show up and get shit done.

During those times, what really helped me was what I call “escapism therapy.” This was when I dove into the world of K-drama and BTS and it was really fun to be exploring something new. It all started when I read a quote somewhere that if you can overcome the 1-inch barrier, you’ll discover a whole new world. And I think its true! Getting into Korean culture has really made me reflect on many things. It’s made me realize that we have the same humor and jokes, and its made me prouder to be Asian for some reason. BTS made me laugh so much, I’m really thankful that they were able to make me smile during those times. Things like seeing BTS at the Grammy’s made me feel proud that an Asian group is there and made me question why we all put American music and Hollywood etc. on the highest pedestal. When did we all decide that only music written in English can be the best?

Jin’s words also comforted me during this time (see below) and made me come to peace with having minimal work and just try to enjoy relaxing as much as possible, even if it means spending more time watching videos, playing games or whatever, and not productive. Suga’s words also made me feel better about not having a clear dream of what I want to do or who I want to be. (see below) Sometimes I get frustrated that I don’t have a 5-year plan to focus on, cause it’d be much easier to hone my energy on a specific goal, but I’m trying to enjoy everyday life more and have small dreams like learning a new language etc . But to be honest, lately I’ve been wondering if I really don’t have a goal or am I just avoiding the process of having to sit down and think about it …

So I guess this is the end of my H1 2022 reflections and the next post will be about my H2 2022 ambitions, as I’m starting to feel better bit by bit :)
