Peter gets underestimated. Everyone calls him “kid,” as if he’s not part of the Avengers. Well anyway, contrary to what the others may think, he does notice things. Being in high school is good for something. Noticing when people have crushes, for one.
Nobody else seems to notice the way Captain America looks at the Winter Soldier. Peter is still not sure how to act around Cap. He’s a little intimidating, not a very approachable guy. He always looks very severe and serious and to be honest, Peter’s arms still hurt when he thinks about the fight at the airport. But when Steve’s looking at the Winter Soldier, he looks a lot more approachable. Softer, somehow. Peter likes him better that way. Not that he’d ever dare say that to Captain America’s face. He’s not in any hurry to die again. Anyway, the point is, Cap clearly has it bad for his best friend.

If you don't mind: how much of a happy accident was Soldier/Bucky and Natasha mirroring each other in character development/recovery (ITHLYN)? Because I loved how as he was figuring out smartphones for eating and that it's ok to have feelings but be careful of bad thinking, she was figuring out shaving her head and spy/Avenger/Multitude!Natasha (again) over the shieldra fallout.
Soldier/Widow mirror q p. 2: the thing os, Natasha was going to get fallout no matter what, but I adored out you *made it important bc she's a person not a persona *let it become a mirror of Bucky, respecting both people *turned it into a fascinating illustration of how recovery spirals and fractals back into itself *did all this beautiful musings inbetwen scenes that were also utterly honest but completely ridic. Like, intermission With Llamas, or That Damned Kayak *g*
HAHAHA WELL THE SHORT ANSWER IS “COMPLETELY ACCIDENTALLY”
the longer answer is ithlyn is an exploration of characters who have had similar traumas and losses of identity, support structure & trust. natasha and bucky (and steve and sam!) are looking for answers to the same question, basically - who am i now? what the fuck am i supposed to do? my entire world crashed down around my ears - AGAIN - and i have to dig myself out and figure out what’s next. What choices do i make this time? what wasn’t working before? what the fuck happened, where did i go wrong, how do i make my future not look like my past?
natasha and bucky have to prioritize their bodies in this process, in different ways - bucky because he’s basically coming off pretty intensive life support with a LOT of medical problems and has to teach himself how to deal with that, and natasha because (also like bucky) her work lives in her body and her body is the primary tool of her work. since so much of her work is also tied up in identity and interpersonal relationships, how she displays herself is a direct correlation - in her own eyes as well as others’ - to what she’s doing, who she is and what message she’s trying to send.
they both also have very practical approaches to the whole process - partially because, again, their bodies/lives necessitate it, and partially because i think by both nature and nurture bucky and natasha are very practical people. they see their bodies as tools, and there isn’t necessarily a negative connotation there - they both have complex relationships with their bodies and minds, and while bucky’s especially is adversarial at times, a lot of ithlyn is them working hand and hand with who they are, to the full extent of who and what they are.
it was also important for me to depict them as characters who don’t hate themselves. they hate what they’ve done, they hate things that have been thrust upon them, but not themselves - barnes goes so far as to absolutely reject and other the parts of him that he hates, so that what he’s hating isn’t self, and he keeps it at arm’s length until he doesn’t hate it anymore. I would argue that natasha is especially comfortable in herself, body and mind, and her conflict comes from what she has chosen to do and allowed herself to go along with, not who/what she is.
As a result, both characters never really wallow in despair or failure, and always get up when they fall down; half because they have never been allowed to quit in their lives, and half because neither of them are quitters. they are both survivors, and even if they don’t think of it in such explicit terms, they believe themselves worthy of survival, and self-protection, and success. even when they’re down they’re not out, and they know it. they are motivated to improve and heal themselves for themselves first and foremost, and i wanted to really explore those kinds of characters + that determination - i think there are a lot of stories where people motivate themselves through others and their relationships, and that’s great! everybody does that! ithlyn has a lot of that too! but for characters who are as narratively and physically isolated as natasha and bucky are, it was an awesome opportunity to really dig in and figure out what drives these people - these two motherfuckers who survived, alone, for decades in extremely hostile territory, and how their internal engines are powered both because of that and despite of it.
and of course it’s all interspersed with silly moments, because what is life but a series of increasingly silly moments

For the dvd commentary thing, this passage: "He’s never even heard of tech like this, not even here in the future. Googling military prosthetics gives him images of crude robot hands and bulky, bare-bones connections. He’s not surprised HYDRA had something better up its sleeve— in his sleeve, ha ha ha ha ha— but even they didn’t seem to even partially understand it." I have a theory that ithlyn maybe started with the alien-made arm idea, and I'd love to know the true story.
you are correct in that alien tech arm was one of the core concepts! the sordid truth is that ithlyn grew out of a bunch of chunks of other stuff that i already had written to make my then-gf laugh, which i then cannibalized and frankentaped together to become the vehicle for all my “okay what REALLY happened after CATWS” ideas. i was super inspired by cascades by @robotmango and modulation by @sleepswithcoyotes - for the operatic scale and boldness of premise, and ofc ANG by @spitandvinegar for multi POV and the most deftly handled OCs ive seen basically ever. if you havent read all of these fics go now, you wont regret it, each is not only enjoyable for its story but is tbh a masterwork of craft + style!!! i was taking notes!!!!
anyway, buck’s robot arm - partially i wanted to have fun with that, with the whole concept, and when i was like oh shit i can give him a SPACESHIP it all fell in together like i had some kind of plan or something. plus it made sense to me - his arm is VERY advanced tech, just having PROPRIOCEPTION in the damn thing is a literal miracle & insanely complicated to achieve, and honestly? if hydra had that tech? they wouldnt use it for PROSTHETICS, they would be making a damn robot army. sure a robot arm is cool, but you know whats cooler and way less likely to flip out and crush your trachea? an entire damn robot.

Barnes doesn’t answer. Sam kind of feels sorry for him. You get brainwashed, blown up, ambushed and shot, you get hauled in and prodded at a horse clinic, and now people are all sitting around asking you if you want to be dead or not. That kind of thing can’t be good for you, existentially. The fact that Barnes is just sitting there and sort of vibrating is pretty incredible. Sam would’ve flipped his wig in nine directions by now.
Fat Seal Bucky Sequel:
Tony’s still staring. Bucky, who is now prodding at the digital display on the refrigerator, glances around and then gives Steve a look that says Is the little hairy one okay? Steve waves it off. Tony probably wouldn’t appreciate more of an audience right now. Bucky nods, pulls a knife from under his pelt and starts using the tip to pry the digital panel out of the casing.
“We’ve got to go,” Steve says, making a tactical decision in light of Tony’s emotional catatonia and Bucky’s impending vandalism. “Let us know if there’s anything we can do for you, Tony. C’mon, Buck, there’s a specialty restaurant just down the block, it says they sell swordfish.”

i’m writin’ for charity (and political mobilization)
So! Since my laptop is busted and I can’t draw, and @spitandvinegar had the fantastic idea of writing stuff in exchange for donations to Swing Left, I am jumping on this bandwagon. I’m opening up 4 slots for ficlets at 3 cents per word - so for $30 donated that’s 1k words, $15 that’s 500 words, so on so forth.
- 1 of these slots is gonna be for Selkie Bucky fic content. How that works: everybody who donates and wants Fat Seal Bucky, then whatever amount you donated, the corresponding word count will be added to the story. Feel free to add specific requests and I will do my best to incorporate them - possibly this may turn into a series of vignettes if I can’t finagle a way to stick all the requests into one fic.
- Other 3 slots are for other content.
- What I’ll Write: my strengths are comedy fic and shenanigans. I’ll write outtakes or vignettes or codas of any of my published fics (tho keep in mind ITHLYN is not finished and I might not be able to write your request due to story plan!). I pretty much write only in Captain America movie universe, though I can also write Discworld fic. I’ll write AUs - Shrunkyclunks, modern AU, one or more chars are mythological creatures, etc. I can do you a great Steve, Bucky, Sam and Natasha, with whatever pairings thereof, up to and including Barbershop Quartet. NatSharon, SteveSamBucky and however u wanna stick Clint in there will come out good too. Tony, Pepper, Maria, Fury, Peggy and the Howlies I can do you a great genfic, though I’m on more uncertain footing on pairings in that set. I don’t know shit about comics canon or Agent Carter or any other Marvel shows, so unfortunately I can’t really write anything there.
What I Won’t Write: no noncon, no children at all (yes even in genfic, I straight up do not write children). No high school AUs. No angst - guys, I’m just shit at it. No torture or HTP stuff. No Stony this time - I don’t think I’d be able to write it properly. Please message me beforehand for NSFW and/or kink stuff! I might not be able to write what you want to read.
Disclaimer: I write pretty much comedy only, and it creeps into basically everything I do. If you ask for 800 words of NatSharon pussy eating, what you’ll probably get is 100 words of pussy eating and 700 words of Natasha kicking her heels off in passionate undress and accidentally kicking a shoe through Sharon’s bedroom window. If you want ABO, you’ll get some incredibly weird biology and worldbuilding and most likely zero self-lubing buttholes. Please keep this in mind when requesting! I’ll take you on a fun ride, but it probably won’t be what you were expecting.

so back seat drive was written literally as scaffolding around the entire premise of “bucky gives steve road head”, so literally everything else was straight hodgepodge pulled from random corners of my brain. it’s my least planned fic after bored as housewives, and as such it’s 90% tell not show and montage sentences such as the one you picked out. for this chunk you chose, i literally was pulling together scrabble tiles out of my brain basket: let’s see... bucky will have... “Impotency”... with a side of... “Not giving a fuck about it”. Okay! Let’s roll!
so like, i’m playing with certain elements here - y’all know i like trope inversion, and i like to write characters who meet their problems head on - but it’s p much surface level only. overall, i think BSD worked so well bc it’s so divorced from anything else. it’s got great banter, bc i churn out some amazing bullshit when there’s no plot involved, but honestly i feel like the sequel was such a mess exactly because i had practically zero background on these versions of steve and bucky. in BSD, there’s nothing going on outside of them: no real politics, no repercussions, no real problems, it’s 10000% a fluff piece. for the sequel, i had to tack all of that on and play catch-up with myself.
so like, is this an indicator that i should burn plot and pursue off-the-cuff banter pieces? i mean, probably. once i get ITHLYN out of my system - aka The Big Answer To The Big Question Of What Happens After CATWS - i’ll probably be able to pursue more of that. my AUs are currently letting me blow off steam in that direction - how to lose a guy in 30 seconds is a complete romp, and mob wife is more plotty/serious (bc it’s literally at its core a love letter to materialist yuppieism, which is, tragically, what passes for my id fantasy) but since i can’t write non-comedy it’s got a hefty serving of that as well.

so we all know ITHLYN is my party child, and back seat drive is my duckling who was never ugly but still grows more beautiful with every day, and i’m surprised better than to bend got the numbers it did given it’s a 3some and not just steve/bucky exclusivity. it does have sex! which probably made up for it.
we all also know i came late to the fandom party and i write slow as balls, so i don’t have that many works posted; as a result, my bottom five is just my top 5 in reverse. (we’re not counting the crackfic, because while it is truly a gem and a glory, it’s crackfic and by nature skews the numbers.) (still dead last tho, if ya wondering.)
as for like, do i feel this stack accurately represents my feelings to these fics? Kinda - ITHLYN is where i put the most work, energy, thought and research, so naturally it looms over the others, but bored as housewives was so EASY. like, FREAKISHLY EASY to write. it WROTE ITSELF. I DID IT IN ONE DAY. ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! which is fucking UNHEARD OF for me. so for that it has a super special place in my heart, though like, i can’t figure out if it’s proof of concept or a weird fluke, that i can write painlessly and quickly and well. we shall see!
