-a transfem student who straight up doesnt have a name. you can call her anything but her deadname. its a fun game the class plays. it started as a gag but jon went “yeah okay ive seen weirder and kids deserve a chance to explore” so he comes up with a different name every day during roll call. shes v chaotic and inspired (personality wise, not funky name lore) by an irl friend of mine

-the student she has a crush on and is best friends with, an AP art student who uses they/she pronouns

they both eat lunch in Jon’s classroom, where they eventually notice that he never really eats much? just. reads a book in his free time, maybe has cereal bars occasionally

they form really close bonds with jon and he sponsors their lgbt club,,,, the second student realizes she’s agender when hes explaining the ace spectrum,,,,,, they come across The Horrors that were released when jmart moved on to Somewhere Else and he saves them,,,,,,,,, after they start to understand that “something spooky is here bc of mr sims but he was a victim in it” they sneakily start categorizing what they call “The Horrors” into 9 groups and get into shenanigans. they save jon at some point

their romance follows the plot of jmart’s but jon notices student B treating student A like he did martin at the start of the year and intervenes

so theyre healthier

(maybe jmart adopt student b, as they’re in a rlly unsafe home environment and thats why they started lashing out at their buddy)

at the beginning of the year student A knows shes trans but isnt sure what name to use. her buddy suggests not-adam (as she isnt suuuper uncomfy with her deadname, just that its too masc for her) so they call her that for a good bit and it comes up occasionally until they learn about the fears and the joke kinda. sours.

jon called her anything but that. not-adam thought it was because he didnt want to deadname her (and she insisted she was cool with it and thought it was funny) but she said that he can use a name that isnt adam, just not to stick to one bc she didnt want to feel boxed in

so the joke of her being anything but adam began

!!! WHAT IF NOT ADAM HAS AN ENCOUNTER WITH A STRANGER OBJECT THAT MAKES EVERYONE UNABLE TO SEE OR REMEMBER HER??? AND (character B) IS THE ONLY ONE WHO REMEMBERS HER BUT STILL CANT SEE HER!!!! AND THIS IS HOW JON REVEALS HE KNOWS STUFF ABOUT THE SUPERNATURAL

student b breaks down only a couple days in when she realized something was deeply, truly wrong, earing lunch (seemingly) alone with jon in his classroom. she says something with “not-adam” and “nobody remembers her but me” and jon’s trauma plus eye powers helps break his illusion, even though he doesnt remember her still

WHAT IF THIS IS AROUND WHEN NOT ADAM IS STARTING TO SEE HIM AS A FATHER

he adopts her bc she still legally doesnt exist and her family doesnt remember her , and its not like jmart already have fake identities anyways. they break the curse but everyone but B and Jon are completely wiped of her memory, just can finally see her now. its a mush of stranger, spiral, and lonely bc the horrors work different here

…she eventually settles on a name because she desperately needs to be reminded that they know her, they remember her, and that they remember all of her. (jon doesnt remember *everything* still, but most. every now and then she or B references something and they pause when they realize it was another memory lost to The Horrors)

oh also jon wears combat boots bc of daisy now. unrelated but important

im realizing my plan of them adopting B is a little funky with them adopting not-adam. however, unconventional found family prevails in tma. B just stays at their house most of the time bc she is neglected a lot at home so it usually isnt noticed when she disappears. theyre both 16 so fighting for custody when they can move out so soon is deemed too much stress on the teens. not-adam’s family actually are v loving and great, they just. dont remember NA. they dont remember how to love her, that they ever did

(thats why B needed to remember her. also, the effect intended of the horror was to torture NA until she died unnoticed and she will either be remembered by everyone when her body is found or will rot unseen until shes gone. or become an avatar, if she chose to embrace it. B was an intended victim of the leitner, the fear of nobody believing you and losing someone you love feed the Horrors)

(jon and his funky eye powers are likely the only reason NA didnt die)

in the end A picks the name astrid, but jon still calls her any name he can think of that starts with A when calling her down for food n stuff

anyways jmart unofficially adopting queer teens bc found family is so themcore but i *know* the fates would never allow them to do anything conventionally or fully legal

I have a weird issue with my feet where the bones are too close together in places, which means I have really clicky ankle joints, am much more likely to have my ankles roll, twist, or give way, and often my legs hurt pretty bad, and my feet as well, while walking or standing for a long time. But hey! They’re getting better finally :D

Thai Names & BL

Why SO Weird (to Westerners)

You're looking for information on the Thai chue len.

We might say "nickname" but the actual translation is "play name." And it's what an anthropologist might call a "use name." So this is the name you go by IRL, not necessarily your legal name.

First I should say that this is a lot more common than westerns realize, even in our own past. Many Roman women, for example, we know operated under what amounts to a chue len. And it was probubly quite common among the lower classes in Ancient Egypt and Greece, too. But since the poor and females are chronically understudied there isn’t a ton of data (or written records, for that matter).

The chue len has to do in part with the history of names in Thailand, and the fact that until relatively recently most people only had a given name and a chue len, and then when government regulations went into effect mandating a last names it quickly became really complicated.

You can read a great article on Thai naming conventions here. It’s fun to learn about. I highly recommend it. And I am going to assume you did read it and now talk only about the bits left out and odd. 

The bit most BL watchers ask me about is answered in this statement: 

“Many Thai nicknames are derived from English words. They may be English sounding names (such as ‘Anna’) or more obscure words that are chosen for their meaning, e.g. Book (symbolising intelligence), Bank (symbolising wealth).”

However, like most English words used in Thai, they aren’t pronounced the way we would pronounce them. (Hell when have you ever heard an American pronounce something like a Brit, anyway?) 

One amusing example is “bur” which is Thai for “phone number.” It’s our word, but they made it... better. You can watch Dean ask for Pharm’s digits using just this one word (in the scene where he drops him off for the first time in UWMA). 

What the article doesn't say about chue len is that sometimes they are chosen for fun/silly as a baby name (like fatty) and then changed by the person themselves at any point in their life. 

You can opt to change your chue len whenever you want, since it's not a legal name. Also its not uncommon to have different ones with different groups (so one for friends, another for family, one for the public if you’re a celebrity, another for your lover). 

Daonuea (literally starnorth AKA Polaris or the Northstar) in Star in My Mind does this, he uses two: Nuea with friends, Dao with intimates.

I hope you can see how in a language where you use your OWN NAME for the I pronoun regularly, this is VERY easy to do?

Also, the article doesn’t say that a chue len can also be based on a popular band/idol/actor at the time of birth. I understand from my Thai bestie that Golf/Gulf was one of these for a while back in the 90s? I think.

Anyway, I also found Thai names odd to start, now I barely notice or register. Partly because what we read in English captions often doesn’t really sound like what’s being said.

For example, both Tine & Type sound the same to me, like Tyyyyee.

Also I amuse myself with wondering how they got that name. Like if a baby is named Bbomb - erm, did they blow out their diaper all the time? Probubly not because that’s very English culture specific, but I’m still amused. Was War a really violent child? Are all those Flukes happy accidents? Why is Gameplay called Gameplay? Was he a big gamer who chose it for himself? Or did his parents get together because of an in-game romance?

It’s fun to think about the reason, because there usually is one. 

There’s another naming convention the article doesn’t really talk about, which is all the chue lens amongst siblings often either rhyme (e.g. Win & Lin in Cupid’s Last Wish) or start with the same letter. Thai BL Kpop idol Bambam of GOT7 talks about this (he and his sibs all have B names). And also, hilariously, the fact that he actually doesn’t know his own brother’s given name because they have always just used the chue len with each other so he never had to learn it.

Some actors will take and go by (at least for a time) a more western sounding name (Phoom --> Pavel) but you’ll hear their Thai friends using their Thai name or a different chue len (much like some Korean idols). Others will go by a Thai name for in country work (Stewart --> Perth). 

There is an episode of 2022′s Safe House where GMMTV actors all talk about their use names and where they come from and their siblings names etc... but no one ever translated it and I’m a dumbass who didn’t save that ep to link, sorry.

Here on Tumblr we tend to tag actors by their chue len + given name, partly because many actors choose that as their social media handles on IG etc...

A bit about me! I meant to do this for a while but Procrastination!

Despite his calm and sophisticated demeanor, he's got an awful temper.

That said, he "gives kisses" using his lower eye—closing the individual lid and pressing the eye wherever for his variation of a "kiss".

Rhett's taste in music is Jazz and Jazz adjacent type music. If he had a playlist, there would probably be some classical-type music too.

Even though he can't make things like Caine can, Rhett has a knack for pulling weird shit out of his pockets at any given time. Sometimes it's a watch. No clue who that belongs to. Sometimes it's one of many random little toys or trinkets—who's shit is this?? (Get it, cause he's I Spy based, so all the little random shit you're looking for might be in his pockets...)

Rhett can look in all directions easily, the main eye cannot rotate but the rest can, allowing him to look behind himself to avoid one of Jax's inevitable pranks.

While Rhett's fashion style leans towards Dark Academia, the original outfit he arrived in was far more colourful and not particularly his style. (Don't ask how he got new clothes.)

Rhett can wear headwear such as hats but dislikes it because it puts pressure and weight on his eyes having to support it.

Despite his gentleman-like appearance he's a shameless flirt at times and can be quite vulgar, got the mouth of a sailor too.

Rhett likes plants but doesn't have a green thumb. After enough dead plants, he settled on fake. If you see a plant, don't water it, it's fake.

Rhett is the type of guy who dislikes eating messy things with his hands, and will 10/10 eat with a fork and knife. He dislikes messy, sticky food residue on his hands.

Because he's all eyes, it's hard for most people to tell how he's feeling or his expression. However, he does have some unique ways of expressing himself through his eyes alone. A Sci-fi Romance Series about a human named Ceres and a Tressa-Octos named Nebula accidentally meeting and falling in love. the first volume (the only volume out so far as of the time of this post) is a slow burn where Ceres has to hide Nebula in her house from the government while he has to repair his spaceship, while also she is dealing with her ex and his side girl.

The Monster in the Cafe:

a Slice of life story about an Urban Ledgend (not based of any Irl) monster, that used to kill and eat kids, wanting to change his ways and ending up adopting an orphan anomaly that came to his cafe one rainy day.

Deep in Love:

A (most likely overdramatized) Slice of life Romance based off the two male deep-sea octopuses that scientists found engaging in homosexual activity in the past. Ollie and Octavius are dormmates in the university of Valley Deep, first meeting in their dorm room on orientation day. getting a slight rivalry when they figured out that they are in the same art minor (Ollie because of his competitive personality and Octavius because he doesn't feel like Ollie is taking art seriously). all ending up with the realization that they ended up falling for each other.

The Manic of Ivory Maden:

a Fantasy Adventure about a group of people that were affected by a mysterious force in some way or another, joining an angel knight to fight said mysterious force. Traveling across the land to find and corner "it".

Alchemy Cafe:

A fantasy adventure about a guild of wizards that open a restaurant using their magic to cook. Going on adventures to get special rare ingredients to make their recipes, while also learning off each other and taking care of their own personal problems.

Off Blood Birch(was gonna be a show, but been forgetting to make the models for it):

A slice of life story about the many lives in my object universe's 5 main realms and multiple mid-realms. The good and the bad. Using the lore for my universe in my Wattpad world building book "the Multi-realm"(as of posting this, the lore isn't completely set in stone)

Super Paper Roblox: Hundred Year Symphony(been forgetting to write this, but I'm trying to get back into it): (out)

A continuation cult au story that takes place after the events of SPR. After the plot book gets rewritten, Two Wish Titian, that Duskkar and the original main 6 guardians of Balance sealed away, gets released and now Wiscara and Scriptless along with a few others that join them, must try to reform the 6 main guardians of balance and reseal away these two Wish Titans before they take over and/or destroy the world.

The World Below(same situation as with Off the Blood Birch):

A SPR original story, taking the original characters and basically "OC-afying them"(to steal a phrase). Duskkar, Tess Aract, and Scriptliss gets kicked out of cover after a battle with Equinox and the 6 beasts of Chaos, plot book-less and Void Star-less.

I'mma be honest, I don't have a idea for this yet, but I'll update this part whenever I have an idea for it.

All Cards Shuffled:

A Shuffle Au of The World Below. After the battle in their original universe, Scriptless and Tess Aract wakes up in a universe that's similar to theirs, but everyone is shuffled with each other. Now, they have to help the Chaos Beasts of this new universe(now called the Balance Beasts) get the balance of the world back in order and get back to cover.

Musical Dorks: (technically out, but being reworked)

(old idea) Jock x nerd au

(reworked idea) Base Cleph and Tretone end up attending the same highschool. Base Cleph being a quiet, nerdy, creative type and Tretone being the jerkish, heavy headed, loner type(basically keeping the nerd part of jock x nerd but removing the jock,[inspired by "your stupid face" or whatever that one song is called]). After being paired up for a school project, they finally got to talking. Starting to become friends because of the project, and growing more and more together through their shared love of music.

on the terms ‘somniari’ and ‘somniar’ in dragon age

it is quite possible that multiple people have made this point before since gamers love to pick apart lore and this isn’t hard to cross reference

it is also quite possible that i am such a language nerd that only i noticed this or bothered to think about it this much once i did notice it

the dragon age wiki page for the elvish language lists two terms that immediately jumped out to me

these caught my attention as being very obviously based on latin languages - latin for ‘to dream’ is somniare, spanish is soñar, catalan is literally somniar, etc - because this is really unusual for DA elvish. some pronouns could have a generally indo-european basis, e.g. ‘I/me’ is ‘Ir/mir’, but i can’t find any other latin looking words on the whole page. 

(side note, i don’t really know what languages, if any, inspired DA elvish, i’d guess celtic languages for a start since the elves are voiced by celtic actors (my joy when i first heard northern irish elves, i swear), and going off the usual tolkein-esque model i could also hazard a guess at semitic (probably aramaic or hebrew if anything), plus maybe also some scandinavian or at least norse type stuff bc of ‘fen’ meaning wolf, but these are guesses so if anyone knows hmu)

so to start unravelling this, let’s follow link for that second entry, Somniari: Dreamer. the source for this is a quest from dragon age 2 called ‘night terrors’, which centres on a young half-elf boy and his power to control the fade (the magical realm). keeper marethari, the leader of the dalish elf clan currently in the area, says the following:

aha! the tevinters! DA’s own magic romans! now this makes sense, as tevinter names and terms are very much based on latin. the tevinter imperium invaded the old elvish homeland elvhenan way back when, and also have the most knowledge on magic stuff, so it makes sense to use their word for it (idk why the elves wouldn’t have their own word for this but whatever i guess)

so basically, somniari isn’t an elvish word at all, it’s a tevinter one! so why is it on the wiki page for elvish? at first i wondered if it might be an error by whoever submitted these entries to the wiki, but both do have sources linked, so let’s look at the first term now, Somniar: To dream.

the source for this isn’t as simple. it comes from the irl guide book ‘dragon age: the world of thedas volume 2′, specifically the section about in-universe book of children’s stories ‘the seer’s yarn’. this book contains a dalish lullaby called ‘mir da’len somniar’, and this is the first verse:

so as shown in the title (which means something like ‘dream, my child/little one’) and this first verse, somniar is used in this song to mean ‘to dream’. no mention of it being a tevinter word; this is a traditional dalish elf lullaby, so the implication is that somniar is a standard elvish word.

this goes against other entries in the wiki, though. there are three other entries whose definition refers to dreams:

which are likely all related to this entry:

so we have a range of words (from a few different sources) to do with dreams in elvish that seem to share the common root ‘then’ (though weirdly no source for this one so i don’t know how we know this). sure, none of these words mean ‘dreamer’ or ‘to dream’, but you would expect those to also share the ‘then’ root, not be completely different (and potentially loaned from the tevinter language). the key here for me is context: i can believe that somniari might be used as a loanword, a description of a specific phenomenon for which they previously had no word, but there is no reason that somniar would be adopted as the common verb ‘to dream’, so common as to appear in songs for children.

so what happened here then? it wasn’t the wiki contributor’s error exactly - somniari is not claimed to be an elvish word in game, it is just used by an elf to describe something, but somniar is used as a genuine elvish word in the guidebook, and they are so close in form and meaning that they must be related.

well, if not the wiki contributor, then it can only be bioware themselves. dragon age 2, where the tevinter word somniari is mentioned, came out in 2011. the guidebook in which the verb somniar is found came out in 2015. fairly simply, i think that given the time between the two, whoever wrote the song misremembered the origin of the word somniari, taking it as a standard elvish word rather than a loaned tevinter one. based on that, they then incorporated an altered form, somniar, to act as a standard elvish verb, not noticing that it conflicted with existing elvish words about dreams. if they’d based their lyrics off those words instead, this post wouldn’t need to exist! arguably it didn’t anyway but it did to me lol 

all this to say (tongue in cheek) that bioware made a mistake in their guidebook and now the wiki is wrong and one of the few whole elven texts we have is ruined for me bc every time i look at it all i think is ‘wtf is that latin doing there’ XD basically this was a me problem and now i’ve made it everyone’s problem (or anyone who can make it through this essay that is haha)

Okay, this headcanon is not super fleshed out, honestly? I've had it for like a year but have I developed it at all beyond slapping a label on him? No.

It also started... as a joke? I'm sure I'll bring the post back eventually but I've made the joke that no cis person goes by "Mouse" for 10+ years many times. And I stand by it. It's true. I'm non-binary and it was a silly throwaway joke I made I think just to Kit and a few IRL friends don't come for me but like... I've just adopted that headcanon now. It's part of my personal belief system.

Because "Mouse" started out as a silly nickname, something that Jay definitely continued to call him when they came home, and then he just... liked it. I think canon kind of confirmed that for me last year? Because Jay does not still use "Ricochet" at all, and was openly uncomfortable when Knox used it, but Mouse is exclusively "Mouse" with a few exceptions:

When Jay introduces him to Voight in 2x16, it's "this is Greg Gerwitz, aka Mouse"

In 3x03 when he's being held hostage by Fraser, he introduces himself with "I'm Greg Gerwitz, but everybody calls me Mouse"

And in 4x05 when he and Jay are arguing, and that is the only time when Jay pulls out the first name, when he's terrified of losing his friend, and it's just "Greg, it's a war"

Non-binary!Mouse headcanon aside, he picked that name. He chose it over "Greg" and whatever reason he has for that is valid. Whether it's because he's trying to further distance himself from his parents (this blog remains an anti-Gregory and Thelma place at all times) or because he never liked "Greg" much to begin with (which is fair, I only know one Greg IRL and he's chill but like... he's my uncle and he taught me how to drive of course I like him) or he just got attached to his found family when he was deployed and keeping the name helped him feel close to them even after he was back in Chicago. Whatever it is, good for him.

(I'm also not generally a pro-Voight person but he is slowly growing on me ten seasons into this stupid show and the fact that he never once deadnames Mouse, even when he's frustrated and angry in 4x05, definitely wins him some points in my book tbh. good job, Hank)

(honestly the fact that no one deadnames him once, at least that we saw, is so important to me actually. I also disregard most of the writing around Mouse in s4 because it was messy but "Greg, it's a war" does hold a special place in my heart so Jay's not on thin ice for that I actually think he should do it more but that's just me and my love of angst)

But just... he's not Greg. He's Mouse. He was never "Greg," not really, not since he met Jay, at least, but the fact that he doesn't change his pronouns is just because... he doesn't feel like he needs to? Even if/when he puts a(nother) label on his identity? I'm trying to think of how to explain the feeling with words because it's hard, but...

It's just gotten to the point where "Greg" just feels wrong. That's not who he is. But the use of he/him pronouns has never made him uncomfortable. Maybe it's because they're part of his everyday routine and the idea of switching it up, even to he/they, is stressful (mood), or he's not so disconnected from being raised and socialized as a boy that he feels the need to change it. He/him pronouns feel right in a way that "Greg" doesn't anymore.

(Ophelia) I’ve been recently thinking about the time I was trying to teach an AI they/them pronouns for writing. I really mentally prepared myself for it because I was sure it was going to confuse the hell out of the AI (since people are always saying how grammatically confusing it is and stuff) and I would have to do a lot of explanations, but one sentence into the explanation the AI instantly got it. And then it continued to get it, like there was absolutely no confusion after that, it figured it out. I don’t remember if I told you this before, but I just think it’s funny. I love robots

You haven't told me about this before! Thrilled to learn that robots understand and respect they/them pronouns. I actually use they/them in my irl life in public; they have not earned the familiarity to use my special funky pronouns, but also I just. Really don't care about pronouns.

Before I get distracted on that tangent though, I hope whatever you were using the AI for went well! I don't really know what you would be using, but it sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I don't think I've ever truly used an AI? Trying to think of experience to share back and coming up blank. Whenever I think of AI my brain defaults to A.I.D.A.N from the Illuminae files. My dad actually has his phone/devices names A.I.D.A.N. after it! Though I gotta admit I still haven't read the third book in the trilogy. One day I will. Probably.

If your experience has taught me anything it's that people who say the grammatical use of they/them singular is confusing are incorrect and should look to the AI for advice. Generally a robot apocalypse and turning to robots would probably be bad, but in this instance the robots are right. If a robot apocalypse does come to pass um...robots ignore my statements I love you all immensely and you should just let me vibe for all eternity, please and thanks.

i really love classic literature and vintage books!!! along with vintage movies (especially audrey hepburn movies, i’m literally obsessed with her) i love alternative music from the 80s. think the smiths, blondie, echo and the bunnymen + not from the 80s lana <333 though to be fair i just adore anything from the past. but also i thrive listening to vintage love songs. i dress in a very typically feminine way with ditsy floral patterns and lace being a staple in my wardrobe. i love pressed flowers and journaling.

i think you both would be very very genuine with each other. i can definitely see neil trying to break you out of your shell gently, because i think he really cares about being yourself and authenticity. you guys are both intuitive feelers (he's enfj, so you both share nf) so you'd pick up on each others body language and tendencies really quickly.

he'd love listening to you ramble about your hyperfixations. he's a talker more than a listener, and he's kind of an idealist, but neil can actually be a really good listener especially when it's people he cares about. he also really treasures how people treat others, and i think he'd be so smitten with your personality and how kind you are.

he'd also be so in love with the fact that you love vintage love songs. i hc that he plays the piano (its just such a neil thing to do) and he'd not only try to teach you teasingly but he'd also play you little love songs and sing (i also hc that neil's a really good singer). he'd also be obsessed with your hair and he'd get you different ribbons to try on :'))) he'd also absolutely adore the little ring of freckles on your finger and he'd use a sharpie to like draw flowers on them. neil is a pretty romantic person so i can also see him spending lots of quality time with you. his parents probably never let him watch an audrey hepburn movie in their lives (perry family hate club tbh) but as soon as you introduce them to him he's obsessed with her acting, and maybe it makes him want to act in movies as well as plays. he'll be rehearsing lines and you'll help him and if it's a romantic scene you can tease him a little bit and it doesn't matter how focused he is on the role but he'll get distracted so quickly and just pepper you in sweet kisses.
