Silver In The Sea Chapter 4 (Denial)
"You're welcome."
For a moment, Julian had to blink slowly to even understand two words that were spoken back to him, digesting them slowly before his eyes opened to the realisation. Truly, the fish now speak and he and everyone else had no clue. Oh, the horrors of knowing this was all too much. He clutched his head to rub his temple, delusional.
"You... you spoke?" He asked in disbelief.
The mermaid crossed her arms about her chest as she snorted, "Oh my, did you truly stand too long in the sun for it to fog your mind?" She sighed with confliction on her breath when she muttered, "I'm too late."
"No, no, I'm just-- confused. You can talk? This isn't some cruel joke I am only just being told of?" Julian laughed nervously, a bubbling wave of nausea and hysteria mixed as one when he did so, and it hurt all the same.
"Oh my, I've truly lost my mind."
The mermaid swished her tail back and forth with wavering concern for the man, as she slowly reached closer towards him. "Please, don't hurt yourself any further. You've been on this island for some time."
Julian paused, looking back on her, watching how the blending from human skin to scales was utterly flawless, her tail gleaming like a thousand silver. Then, he looked to the two fish that had been degutted and left on the pale rock, as shimmering as her tail but a seamless colour of blues and greens. Julian halted himself from leaping down onto them and feasting on them raw and all in front of his new friend, but he was sure the mermaid wouldn't care.
"Did you watch me?"
The lady gave a lamented smile, "The storm was cruel to your ship, those men aboard, they were filled with water and stopped moving when they went beneath the waves. I shook and shook them, but none moved," Julian watched how her eyes lit up briefly.
"But when I came to you and shook you, you moved! You were bleeding from your head, but I pulled you out before you stopped moving. I found the nearest spot of land because I knew land walkers like you couldn't swim for too long."
"Land walkers? I--" He sputtered, groaning when he believed himself drunk off of the lack of water, or he was actually back in the pub drinking and imagining away vivid scenarios.
I could really use a pint of salty bitters right now. "You still saved me? Why? You don't know me."
"I know, but I couldn't let you die! And besides," her face rouged for a moment across her cheeks and she averted her gaze from him. "You are very pretty."
Julian's face reddened itself upon hearing the words come from her mouth, shaking it in dismissal for now. "You saved my life there, and even though I cannot understand why... I must thank you still for doing so. I would've been claw food at the bottom of the sea by now."
The mermaid gave a quizzical look to him, her expression unreadable before she gave a curt nod. "It is my name after all."
"It is?"
She gave a broad smile and gave a few sharp clicks and whistles of the tongue before calling out a noise that was so otherworldly that it almost brought Julian to tears. He couldn't stop himself from feeling a sense of forlorn from hearing it; long and drawn, but hauntingly beautiful. She stopped and gave a pleased looked to him from her spot, lying stomach down in the shallow water.
"That-- that was your name?"
"Yep!" She clicked again happily. "It was from my ancestor, meaning 'one who is peaceful'. My brothers and sisters have hundreds of different names too."
Julian thought carefully, the sound of her name was familiar to whistles and clicks from dolphins so he was certain he wouldn't even be able to say her name properly without the required vocal range. "Perhaps, I can give you a name more fitting... and easier to say."
The mermaid went from looking confused to rather chuffed with being called something more suitable for what she called humans 'land walkers'.
The doctor thought of different names, hundreds even, from patients he could remember back in Prakra, of the old and babies he met and cared for. He knew all the same that it had to be fitting for her.
"How about Mira?"
The mermaid's head tilted inquisitively, trying to pronounce the name with as much accuracy, "Meeei-ra?"
He smiled at the effort, thinking nonetheless how cute she looked, "I think it could have the same meaning as your own name. But it means in my language 'ocean'."
She tested out the name again and again softly to herself, the water lapping around her as she tried. Finally, she looked back up and him with a broad smile. "Then, that shall be my new name, my land walker name!"
Julian smiled, and for the first time since being washed up on the island with little knowing if he would make it away alive, all Julian could think about was the possibility of being saved, regardless of who it was.
But for now, at least he could confirm he had gained the trust of a mermaid.

Diary of the Writing Raven
Part 3 of the 1000+ follower milestone! A continuation of Raven lore (check out part 1 and part 2 for more context)!
Today, we will peak into the raven’s diary. Shhh, don’t tell anyone. The bulk of the entries are hidden under the cut--because a bird has to keep their secrets under lock and key!
***Warning: Spoilers for the main story campaign, particularly chapter 3 and chapter 4!***
Tumblr media
Day 1
I am here. At Night Raven College.
There is a strange man. He calls himself my Uncle. He says that he is so very, very kind...and that he will give me a nest, a place to call home.
Uncle has given me this diary with which to record my thoughts. I will put it to good use.
I am thankful.
Day 32:
Uncle says I cannot stay in the attic writing.
He says I cannot stay in my cage forever.
Uncle says I must go out into the world.
He says it often.
I am scared.
Day 45
Uncle has given me robes.
He smeared things on my face.
There will be a ceremony of sorts, and I must attend.
...I am still scared.
Day 46
The ceremony is over.
I got lost on the way to the Mirror Chamber.
A weirdo chased me.
But...a nice person helped. Then he guided me to the ceremony.
He had very pretty eyes.
His name is Mon-sure Schemer? Mister Jade Leech. I hope I can see him again.
Day 49
I am so fortunate! I have stumbled upon Mister Jade again--this time in the hallway.
There was another Mister Jade with him. His name is actually Mister Floyd. They are brothers--twins, in fact! Eel mermen, too.
They look alike, but their personalities are quite different. It is a curious thing.
Mister Floyd is a little scary. He talks funny, and he is moody--but he promises he does not bite. He has taken to calling me “Black Pearly”.
They say they work at this “Mostro Lounge”, and that I should visit.
I am excited!
P.S. Mister Jade says I do not need to call them misters. I will be doing that!
Day 50
The Mostro Lounge is lovely! It has these glowing jellyfish lights, and seashell decorations. There is cool jazz, and a calming underwater ambiance.
Jade seats me and gives me recommendations. I don’t know what a lot of things on the menu are--Uncle has been feeding me mostly grain and small scraps of meat, trying to get me accustomed to human food.
Jade brings me a thing called Flounder’s Blue. He says it will be easier to hold down than solid food.
Flounder’s Blue comes in a short and stout glass. The liquid itself is actually yellow, with streaks of a blue drip swiped on the inside of the glass, and a blue...circle (?) stuck in, protruding out like a fin.
It tastes...sugary. I do not yet have the words in my vocabulary to properly describe it.
Jade tells me the circle is a “wafer”, the blue is a “syrup”, and the liquid is a “pineapple and cherry juice”.
I am learning many new things today.
Jade is so smart!
Day 54
I almost flopped at giving a presentation to Professor Trein’s class.
Floyd says it’s because I talk strangely, that I stutter and pause too much.
“Why can the Black Pearly write so much, but talk so little?” he asks. “You should tell Jade to tutor you, he’s pretty good with words!”
I have to agree with him. Jade taught me many new words in the Mostro Lounge before. I was embarrassed, but I asked him for help.
He was happy to oblige.
We will meet a few times each week to work on my speaking skills.
Day 59
I tripped and fell in P.E.--I am still no good at running.
Jade was sweet and helped patch me up.
I cried a little.
Okay, a lot.
He stayed with me until I stopped.
Day 71
I have gotten into the habit of visiting the Mostro Lounge every weekend.
The owner, Azul, is friends with the twins. He lets me sit at a table in the corner to do my work and practice speaking.
Jade sits with me and exchanges words.
He has me read stories I have penned aloud.
Sometimes he puts a plate of snacks or a drink in front of me and asks me to taste them, then describe the flavor to him. Other times, he points to people or things in the lounge and asks me to give my thoughts.
Once, he pointed at himself. I told him that he was very patient, that he was someone I trusted.
“Fufu. That is good to hear,” he says.
I also told him that his smile was beautiful.
Day 75
Today, I saw Jade’s true form.
We were swimming today in P.E., but I had to sit out. Ravens cannot swim.
Floyd and Jade were eager to get into the water. Their skin turns blue, and they sprout fins and long eel tails.
...I am not entirely certain why they lack clothing though? It must not be customary for merfolk.
They are having fun in the water.
I am glad.
Day 83
An angry Savanaclaw student came to me in the hallway after Alchemy.
He started to say something about the Leeches and deals, but Floyd told him to stop bothering me. In that moment...Floyd looked like a monster, all teeth and sharp edges.
Jade pulled me away and invited me to go hiking with him.
It sounds fun, but I am concerned about the Savanaclaw student.
Jade says to not fret.
So I listen.
Day 84
There is so much to see in the mountains!
Trees! Streams of water! Rocks! Dirt! Animals! Plants! The sky!
I want to experience everything at once. I am so excitable that I trip over my own two feet a few times--but it’s okay. Jade is always there to help me up.
His favorite thing about nature is mushrooms. He tells me all about them, and the places they like to hide.
I like listening to him talk. His voice is so deep and melodious--and his eyes sparkle when he is excited.
It’s very cute.
Day 86
Jade shows me the mushrooms he is cultivating, and his terrariums.
They are fascinating--each mushroom has its own personality, and each terrarium is like a miniature world.
A thought has wormed its way into my head as of late:
I wonder what it would be like to be a part of his world.
Day 90
It rained.
I shared an umbrella with Jade.
It was a little strange to be squished right next to him.
My heart would not stop pounding, and my cheeks were on fire.
Day 112
The days are growing colder, and shorter.
I wish that time did not fly so fast.
I want to spend more of it with Jade.
I need to return the jacket he lent me.
Day 120
Uncle is worried.
He says I spend too much time with “morally dubious” people.
He questions my ability to judge character.
He does not believe me when I tell him that Jade is a good person.
Uncle warns me to be careful.
I am being careful.
Day 132
Winter has set in.
Jade is kind enough to provide blankets and warm beverages for our study sessions.
At this point, I do not have many issues speaking, but...I do not want to stop. I want to learn more and more. I want to learn more about him.
I enjoy being by his side.
I hope he feels the same.
Day 139
We said our good-byes for the holiday break.
Uncle is taking me with him to a tropical island, and Jade is staying in Octavinelle.
I tell him I will miss him, even if it is just for a few weeks. He looks a bit sad, but he sends me off with a head pat and a smile.
Uncle offers to order me a tropical drink as we board the cruise ship. He tells me not to think of Leeches--those vile, blood-suckers, he calls them.
I say no thank you, but I dream of Flounder’s Blue.
Day 153
The new year has come.
It feels nice to be back on campus, to see Jade again.
We exchanged stories.
Not much happened on my end--I mostly sat indoors and wrote what I could to pass the time. Uncle was often up late into the night, partying and sipping on pina coladas.
Jade says that he helped a few friends and stopped a snake from tearing apart Scarabia. He even shows me a video.
How heroic of him!
I know that I can always count on Jade.
Day 166
I went shopping with Jade.
Floyd was in one of his infamous moods, and Azul is busy with school work--and Jade could not possibly restock ingredients for the Mostro Lounge all by himself.
It was quite busy in town--it made me nervous. I’ve never done well in big crowds of strangers.
Jade said I could hold his hand, if that made me feel any better.
It did.
And it reminded me of the day we first met.
Day 170
I’m still thinking about holding his hand.
Whenever I do, my heart quickens and my forehead begins to bead with sweat.
What is wrong with me?
Have I fallen ill?
Day 185
The students speak excitedly about this holiday known as “Valentime’s Day.” It is a time when you give gifts to the people you care for a lot. A common one is a sweet known as chocolate.
Jade laughed when I told him about it. He said it is actually “Valentine’s Day”, not “Valentime’s Day”. Silly me!
I asked him how many valentines he was expecting.
“None. Oh, woe is me. I appear to be rather unpopular among my peers, fufu.”
How could someone as amazing as him not get any valentines? It boggles my mind.
Day 186
I’ve decided.
I will give him a valentine.
Day 193
I’ve stopped writing stories and devoted most of my free time to researching recipes and designing chocolates.
I think he will like little mushroom-shaped ones. I’ll need to test the flavors out to see what works the best.
I hope the chocolates will bring a smile to his face.
I like his smiles.
Day 195
Oh no, diary.
I’ve realized.
I think I like him.
Day 197
The chocolates came out so well!
I’ve wrapped them up in a box and secured it with blue ribbon. There is an old nursery rhyme...
If you love me, love me true,
Send me a ribbon, a ribbon of blue.
Even if I cannot say those accursed three words...I hope that my feelings are able to come across. The curse cannot punish me for that, yes?
Day 198
I was a fool. I have been tricked. I was being used.
I heard them. I heard everything.
In the Mostro Lounge today...the octopus was speaking to them, the twins with the pretty eyes.
“This is not like you. You are working too slow,” the octopus said to the man I considered my friend.
“I apologize. She was...putting up much resistance. It can be rather difficult to form a connection with such a jittery bird.”
“That is your job,” the octopus sighed. “We need the raven on our side when we approach the headmaster about expanding the Mostro Lounge.”
I understand now--I understand it very well.
Those smiles, that kindness--they were smoke and mirrors.
To begin with, I was always destined to be a prop in someone else’s story. A convenience. Something to be used, then discarded once I am no longer useful.
I have overstepped my boundaries as a storyteller. I...should have remained on the sidelines, where I belong.
I...I know what I must do. I will not allow myself to be tricked a third time. Not by that old storyteller, and not by a slimy eel.
I will steel myself. I will build a wall—and none shall scale it. I will lock myself in a tower, or perhaps even a bird cage, and throw away the key.
To the man with the pretty eyes and the charming smile, farewell.
I’m glad that this raven was, at the very least, able to be a useful footnote in the pages of your story.
Day 201
He feeds me pretty lies and sweet nothings, day in and day out.
He tells me everything I want to hear--that it is a misunderstanding, a mistake. That things are different now. That he cares.
Uncle was right. Leeches are vile blood suckers.
Day 210
I reject his advances every chance I get.
I know they are all with ill intent to begin with.
Even so...no matter what I say or do, he always manages to get the upper hand in the conversation, the interaction.
I hate him.
I hate Jade Leech.
I hate how he is able to take my words away and render me speechless. Words are my only strength, my power as a storyteller. Without them, I am vulnerable.
I don’t want to be the same weak and naive little bird I once was.
Day 213
It is unfair.
Maybe I am too kind, or too weak, or too gullible, but...I want to believe him.
I must put such thoughts behind me and move on.
Day 226
Uncle tells me that someone has sent a letter and a small package.
Into the trash the package goes--right where it belongs.
But the letter--that, I cannot bring myself to throw away.
It bears his handwriting, the very same gentle curves and slopes that taught me new words and phrases many an evening.
It is silly of me to be this sentimental--and over an eel, of all creatures!
So I stow the letter, unopened, in a drawer. It will remain there as a permanent reminder of my follies.
It is better this way.
I cannot be hurt.
I will not be used.
The curse will not kill me.
I can write stories, forever and ever.
This is...for the best. Isn’t it?

okay, hello, this is going to be a part one to a series of introductions ! i have already hit my five character cap because i’m a menace but that means you get more content and honestly that feels like a fair trade off. without my rambling, i give you nicky ( click here to find some quick facts about my boy ) and emi ( click here to find some quick facts about my girl ) ! wanted connections can be found here.
be warned ! before you click that handy dandy little read more, the following triggers will be discussed : death ( multiple deaths due to the fog, not explicit : both nicky and emi ), grief ( parent losing a child : emi ), religion ( turning away from : emi ) !
losing  friends  and  family  to  the  fog  and  blaming  yourself  for  not  being  more  vigilant,  taking  guardianship  of  your  little  sister  and  getting  a  second  job  to  make  sure  ends  meet,  trying  your  hardest  and  kicking  yourself  for  not  doing  better,  bloodied  knuckles  aggravated  by  vodka  to  clean  them  and  wrapped  so  tightly  you  fear  your  fingers  might  turn  blue,  anger  replaced  by  grief  replaced  by  the  understanding  she  needs  you  and  you  will  tear  down  the  rest  of  the  world  to  keep  her  safe.
nicholas adam locklear was born in inverness, scotland, and still has a scottish accent even though he’s been in the country for twenty years.
nicky and his family moved to maine a few months before his seventh birthday. they moved to maine because his mother, a once american ex pat, had a father who wanted his kids to be closer because they all seemed to have scattered to the wind. he walked into the fog a week after the locklears had unpacked their home.
the fog has always been a thing of morbid fascination from nicky and after grandpa took his walk into the woods, nicky was kept particularly far away from the forest line, fog warnings or not. on all saint’s day, the day after he turned eight, nicky found himself in the fog. and then he found himself in his bed with no explanation for either event.
he started drawing that day, intricate sigils that gave themselves meaning but no voice, so he spoke them into existence: protection from sorcery, protection from evil, wards off negative energies, heal the body and the spirit. four symbols that he couldn’t stop drawing on everything he owned. homework, notebooks, on the walls of his home in crayon ( if you look in those spots today, in the locklear family home, they’re painted now. a whole interior room covered in the sigils intended to look like an artsy photo collage wall. ).
some in town say that the locklears are cursed, that their family bears bad blood, that they owed some kind of karmic debt too large for one life. whatever the rumor, they all boil down to one thing: too many locklears have gone missing in the fog. nicky’s paid little mind to them, though there’s a voice too strange to be his but too familiar to dismiss that encourages him to go in ( to go back ).
nicky’s life revolves around his little sister, belle, who was born when he was twenty. a few months later, their mother went into the fog and their father went about an hour later to try and look for her. neither came home. though the courts tried to pass belle off to the next living relative, nicky petitioned for rights to guardianship because he lived in the home and could find a way to make ends meet for him to be belle’s caretaker. enter the diner and blue valley.
nicky’s always been a hard worker, never one to take a short cut and never one to take the easy way out. his focus has always been to take care of belle above board, so no one could have a reason to take away the last of his family. that little babe was his world and is nicky’s driving force in most things. he started working at the bar first and took on a job at the diner when he realized that tips got slow after a certain hour and what better way than to make more money by helping to sober up the people you just got drunk ?
when customers offer to buy nicky drinks, he usually puts together a couple of complimentary mixers ( cranberry juice, pineapple juice, and orange juice ) and pours in water from an old tito’s bottle to make it look like he’s adding tequila. he’ll pocket the cost of a drink as an extra tip. he never drinks on the job.
his jobs aren’t glamorous but they keep the roof over his head and belle’s. he works 14 hour days ( 9 pm to 11 am ; 9 pm - 3 am at blue valley and 3:10 to 11 am at the diner ), 6 days a week ( sundays off ), 84 hours a week and he’s damn good at what he does, and seldom calls out for anything. nicky’s the kind of guy to pound three monsters and call it a day just to keep himself going. he’s used to running on little sleep because of his paternal role with belle and wanting to keep as engaged with her as possible. he usually leaves her with the finnegans so he doesn’t have to pay any babysitting money.
the one time nicky tried, dottie looked at the bills in his hand and just hugged him tightly and said, “no child of mine is going to pay me to watch theirs.” nicky cried that day and spent ten minutes crying into her shoulder and then slept on her couch for a few hours while belle played with the finnegan twins.
nicky is a good person and he’s a really good dad. at 22 he became licensed in the state of maine to be able to foster and has fostered ten kids in the last five years. right now it’s just him and belle in the house that his parents bought that he keeps up as best as he can. the guest bathroom needed a remodel three years ago and the kitchen appliances only work when you knock on them the right way and if the wind’s blowing in the right direction, but some things are just the way that it is.
other important things that i couldn’t work in above but you should know:
nicky gives like ,,, just really comforting hugs that suggest a level of emotional intimacy that is likely to catch you pleasantly off guard.
will help you buy your groceries because he has a better chance of making fifty dollars tonight than you do.
usually sleeps on disney princess sheets because belle insisted they would look best in his room ( she was right ). his other sheets are bubblegum pink and he bought them for himself because that’s the vibe he was feeling and sometimes you just have to do what will put a smile on your face.
his little sister is seven but nicky is the only parent she’s ever known and she usually calls him dad over nicky even though she knows the difference.
nicky calls her his kid a lot. everyone in town pretty much knows the story.
steady  hands  and  steady  heart  are  starting  to  shake,  pleading  with  officers  don’t  let  me  bury  an  empty  casket,  the  table  set  for  three  but  you  can’t  bring  yourself  to  put  the  plate  away,  pale  yellow  front  door  once  made  your  laugh  now  just  makes  you  sad  because  your  daughter’s  sunshine  still  lingers,  and  there’s  no  place  to  put  your  faith,  nothing  so  powerful  would  take  away  a  little  girl.
emi is considerably less fleshed out than nicky but we’re still going to do our best to give her a fair shake at an intro, so here goes !
noemi was born noemi sofia ibarra in pine haven, maine. though she’s always considered pine haven her home, she’s always desired that her upbringing was somewhere warmer.
she’s a third generation doctor at the clinic, following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother and knew from a young age that she wanted to help people. she bounced from pine haven for a while ( from ages 18 to 28 ) and followed her dreams to go somewhere warmer and graduated from emory university’s medical school in atlanta.
she pushed through medical school immediately after graduating with her undergrad and returned to pine haven as a permanent resident when she was 29. having been home, officially, for ten years, she has found herself in the center of the community. more often than not, residents of town know they can call emi and come sit on her kitchen table if they need urgent care.
life outside of pine haven’t wasn’t all medical school, though, because she also met her the father of her daughters. at 23 emi gave birth to her elder daughter, evangeline. that sweet little girl meant the world to her and emi spent double the amount of time awake those first semesters trying to get used to having a baby and school to balance. she was the center of emi’s universe, this baby and her father.
emi’s second daughter, catalina, was born about eight years ago and is as much emi’s pride and joy as her older sister. the pair never fail to blow emi away in their creativity, kindness, and love, and she has made that known to them from the time they could open their eyes. though these times were sweet it’s time to fast forward to the current day because this is where emi shifts for the worse for as much as she doesn’t want to.
two weeks ago, during the fog warning, evangeline wasn’t home with the family. emi was at work, locked down with a few patients, and when she didn’t get a phone call from her daughter, like she asks of all her family, she started to worry. panic didn’t settle in until after the fog warning and no one had heard from evangeline. frantic, begging, trying to stave off the final moments before the inevitable declaration, emi found herself begging the officers at the station: find me something to bury before absolutely crumbling against the weight of her own fears.
prior to her daughter’s disappearance, emi had put at least some stock into god but spite consumes her whenever she thinks about him. something all loving doesn’t steal child from the arms of their mother’s and something all powerful doesn’t let whatever lives in the forest to exist after taking the first soul. this town suffers because of that fog and venom pools in her mouth waiting to spit at the first person who proclaims that god will watch over her daughter. some people turn to faith for stability. emi has turned away.

Congratulations, Honey! You are accepted for the role of Mandy Silverman. This is another sample application for potential applicants to have a look at. You’ll notice that this is quite a long application, but that’s just how I write. You can do whatever you like with yours! If you have any questions about this application or any characters with a connection to Mandy, don’t hesitate to let me know.
OUT OF CHARACTER
Name: Honey Age: Twenty five Pronouns: She/her Timezone: GMT+11 Activity estimation: I essentially work full time and have several obligations, but this group is so tightly organised and planned that I’m confident in participating regularly on the dashboard and as an admin! My admin duties will always take precedence but I will be able to reply to threads several times a week. Triggers: (REDACTED)
IN CHARACTER: BASICS
Full name: Amanda “Mandy” Silverman Age (DD/MM/YYY): Thirty (02/03/1966) - Pisces (Sun), Virgo (Rising), Cancer (Moon) Gender: Cisgender female Pronouns: She/her Sexuality: Homosexual homoromantic Occupation: Adult Education Coordinator Connection to Victim: Mandy did not know the Goode family. She knew of them in the way all newcomers to Devil’s Knot are known: through rumor and glimpses in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot. Mandy had little to do with Linda; she’d seen David and Beth at school, when she’d gone in to meet Mary after work; but she’d never met Brian at all. Alibi: Mandy was at home that Saturday working on a craft project. She ran out of glue at around three, then walked into town to go to the craft store, where she spent a few dollars too many on a crocheting kit. She decided to pick up some coffee and doughnuts then walked back home, where she stayed for the rest of the day.  Faceclaim: Elizabeth Olsen
WRITING SAMPLE
This is a self para written for the Mandy in 1984.
The Datsun.
It was such a shit little car. Really, it was. Sandy’s miscellaneous paraphernalia littered the dashboard. Her dad’s manuals and work shit stuffed beneath the front seats. Pete had stamped grubby hands all over the back windows - people asked them all the time if they had a dog. “No,” Mandy replied grimly, hoisting Pete up on one hip. “Just a kid.” The motor turned over more often than she could count, which would put her father, ever the optimist, into an agitated but vaguely amused mood. Him, hunched over the wheel, grinding the key, revving the engine, If I… could just... Then, Sandy, cranky and likely hungover, snapping from the passenger side: I told you we needed it serviced! They had about a thousand tapes in the center console, most of them in the wrong cases, with a mix that spanned from Bob Dylan to Pete’s ABC children’s songs. Them, zooming along a damp highway, rain splattering the glass, her dad cheerfully singing, The wheels on the bus go ‘round and ‘round! as Pete laughed in delight. Mandy tries to forget that she’d eventually lose her temper and shout, Can we turn this stupid shit off? as her mother mumbled, Amen, behind enormous sunglasses and a gas station Slurpee.
The Datsun, which was rotting away at the police station right this second. Mandy hasn’t asked when they’ll get it back. It’s evidence, that’s it. She has her bike or her skates and Sandy doesn’t leave the house unless she has a ride (Aisha pulling up front and blasting the horn; Sandy, clattering around gathering her things, muttering, Where’s my goddamn…). Their family car is nothing more than a shell, a marker in the Pete and Phillip Silverman’s trail to murder. Kind of like a pit stop. Wrappers marked with imaginary blood stains littering the cab floor. That clean-sour smell of nervous sweat. Her Dad was always a sweater, mopping his brow and fanning himself, Jeez, it’s hot today. Mandy kind of loved that about him. How when she was looking for him in a crowd, she just had to search for the slightly damp white button-down, the back of his nearly-balding head. His hair was soft, like down, and Pete’s was too. Two twin sandy blonde heads sitting in front of the television, Pete curled into his father’s side, Phillip slowly stroking back those baby-shampoo-soft curls.
So, yeah. The Datsun. Scene of family road trips and midnight grocery store emergencies. A wreck that managed to limp from point A to B, with her dad faithfully in the front, eager to drive her to friends’ houses or cheer practice or a competition two towns over. She still thinks about winding the windows down as far as they could go when they were on the highway. Her dad would look over, catch her eye, and grin in a way that made her think of him as a teenager, a young man, that cheerful abandon of youth that was infectious as a whisper, goose-bumps prickling her arms.
“Shall we see how fast this baby can go?” He’d yell, and Mandy would laugh and laugh: “Go, Dad, go!”
ANYTHING ELSE?
Here is my Pinterest board for Mandy (featuring ‘84 and ‘96 boards, because I’m that kind of person), and her account can be found here.
HEADCANONS
Mandy works at the Community Centre as an Adult Education Coordinator. Which is just a fancy way of saying she organises craft classes for senior citizens. Seriously. Mandy picked up the job mainly to get Sandy off her back. After commuting to Lansing to attend community college, her decision to drop out and live and work in Devil’s Knot was met, unsurprisingly, with a pointedly raised eyebrow and a loud slurp from a glass of wine. And Mandy knew, she just damn knew, that if she stuck around her childhood home any longer, she and Sandy would end up killing each other. The job isn’t taxing: she works a few days a week, has a desk up on the mayor’s floor in the Community Centre, and spends way too much time putting flyers together for their new pasta making courses or adult literacy classes. The administration is what really bothers her, because the students are lovely. Little old ladies she’s known for years; grandfathers who remember her father back in the day. Best of all, they like her. Mandy wouldn’t consider herself a charismatic person, but she is a patient one. She’ll listen to a grandmother’s story a thousand times, nodding in the right places, exclaiming, asking questions. She’s gentle. Around other people it can be a slightly different story. She’s not clipped, exactly, nor is she rude. But she is shy, and Mandy is naturally suspicious. When people stop her to talk, she hesitates. It would be too much to link that back to ‘84, although there’s little doubt that that October and the months that followed succeeded in severing her trust in adult figures for life. No, Mandy prefers to keep to herself, to the people she knows. It’s safer that way; controllable.
Mandy loves movies -- always has. Bobby, Mandy, and Perry always went on about music, talking rapturously about guitar solos and funky beats, all while Mandy pretended to grimace and trade teasing looks with Jenny and Mike. But movies. Mandy’s favourite genre is horror. Surprising, maybe, but she can’t get enough. Sci-fi is her second favourite. Her ritual is to go down to the Videoport on a Friday afternoon and stock up for the weekend. She trails down the aisles, fingers skating over the titles, looking for some weird German expressionist thing or a summer blockbuster she can zone out to. Mandy would hardly consider herself a connoisseur, but she has an encyclopedic knowledge for actors and actresses, and can name their filmography from memory just by looking at them. It’s like, one of her only talents.
Mandy enjoys cooking. She mainly enjoys cooking for Mary, who will always, without fail, praise her skills until Mandy’s rolling her eyes and begging her to stop. Even if it’s crap (which it is a lot of the time; God knows Sandy never taught her to cook; this was all the result of afternoon cable and Reader’s Digest), Mary will come up and hug her from behind, kissing the side of her neck, suffusing Mandy in warmth and her spicy perfume. That was so good. You’re so good to me. Doing things for people is Mandy’s way of showing she loves them. It doesn’t matter what it is -- laundry, vacuuming, cooking -- she’ll find herself doing things automatically. It’s a little funny that she’s turned into a housewife ever since moving out with Mary, but it’s also really damn nice. Mandy looks after their small apartment so tenderly. Watering the plants on the windowsill, buying kitsch ornaments from the thrift store, airing out their cramped bedroom in the spring sunlight. Much of Mandy’s life revolves around domestic duties. She picks up the mail, pays bills, goes grocery shopping. Mary comes too, of course, but doing things together in public can get difficult when all Mandy wants to do is kiss her deeply in the fruit and vegetable section. Mary’s full-time job is also demanding, and Mandy only works a few days a week (despite what you may believe, there are not that many adult education classes to organise; the biggest scandal was when they introduced a salsa class and everyone collectively lost their minds). Maybe, in some way, it’s Mandy’s way of holding up her end of their relationship. And maybe, in a deeper, smaller way, it’s also an excuse. If she’s busy, how can she possibly go back to college? Who’ll make apple crumble and fold the socks? Huh? The pixies? If this makes Mandy sound territorial, it’s because she is. She clings to these chores because it’s far easier than thinking about the alternative, which is to get off her ass and actually make something of her life. She’s thirty years old. Nearly thirty one. And she’s got absolutely nothing to show for it. That hurts more than anything. Maybe that hurts most of all.
Mandy is a lesbian. She knew. Even when she was a teenager, she sort of knew. She and Mike started dating when they were thirteen and just... kept going. Certain things seemed inevitable: prom, college, maybe even marriage. It was so simple to imagine her life with Mike, whose family, the Hawkers, were best friends with her parents; they’d all been born months apart; they were raised together. Most of Mandy’s childhood memories involve Mike and Mary, Jenny. They tumbled around together like puppies, climbing trees and having sleepovers. Then they started to grow up, and Mandy and Mike got together, and the atmosphere shifted a little. Mandy liked Mike. She did. Maybe she loved him, in a way. But it was so, so platonic, and the way she felt when she looked at Mary was anything but. Mary used to scare her; still does, sometimes. She was a force of nature and Mandy was the eye of the storm. Looking back, the signs were obvious, but then again, they always are.
Mandy used to dress the way people expected her to dress. T-shirts and jeans, bleached white sneakers and cheer uniforms. Not feminine enough to please Jenny, who’d wrinkle her nose and fondly say, “Mandy, are you kidding? You cannot wear that,” and not masculine enough for her dad, who’d hand her wrenches as he worked on the Cadillac on weekends, shooting sidelong glances at her squad jumper, mumbling, “You’ll get grease all over you, honey.” Scrunchies and high ponytails. Pale pink jackets and a signet ring Mike gave her when they were fourteen. Just enough to be acceptable; to be palatable. To blend in, fade away, be nothing at all. These days it’s the opposite: Mandy dresses like an amorphous blob. In fact, she’d rather people hazard a guess at what she really looks like underneath her oversized flannel shirts and huge boots. The more clothing she has on, the more protected she feels. Layers upon layers. Band shirts worn soft with too many washes; jeans more grey than black. She still has her pink jacket from high school (Mary hung it up in their wardrobe and shrugged when Mandy found it, saying, “You always looked cute, and I’m a sucker. So sue me.”) Mandy pulls her hair up and away from her face; she doesn’t wear make-up. Still has the signet ring, though. She’s a sentimental doofus, she knows.
Mandy loves arts and crafts. Pottery, weaving, knitting; painting, sketching, cooking. These are things that bring her peace, that quieten her inner world. Growing up, she wasn’t creative in the slightest. Mandy was decidedly pedestrian: the most creative thing she ever did was design banners for the cheer squad or doodle in the margins of her school notebooks. But after Pete was returned, she needed something, anything, to stifle the panic static in her brain. Countless nights were spent sitting on the couch in front of the television, Pete curled into her side, her doing finger knitting or making a collage, eyes darting between her project and the cartoon onscreen. Over the years she’s gotten better -- last winter she managed to knit Mary a hideous scarf -- but her hobbies were never pursued in the same vein as her other achievements. Mandy still remembers practicing for cheer for hours in the cold, or studying in her room until midnight, eyes dry and head aching, quietly panicking about a test the next day. Everything she did, she did obsessively. These days, Mandy just wants to be still. Their apartment is stuffed with half finished craft projects: stacks of coloured paper, jars of beads, wool in miscellaneous piles, flowers drying on the windowsill. Sometimes Mary will come home to find her sitting cross-legged at the kitchen table, a pot of sauce bubbling on the stove, Stevie Nicks in the background, Mandy carefully cutting out prints for her art journal. She started journaling when she was a teenager, mainly to help with her father’s murder and the stress of the subsequent trial, but it’s a habit that has followed her happily into adulthood. Mandy would be lost without her projects, her art. It’s a channel for everything she feels; it clarifies her. And it’s never undertaken with any attempt at perfection. Mandy’s learning, slowly, to let go of unattainable ideas. Life is messy. She’s trying to accept that about the world, herself.
Mandy failed community college. Well, it felt like she failed. In reality, she dropped out. There were only so many classes about psych and childhood trauma that she could take (and ironic, right? That she studied psych? Mandy remembers the day she flicked through the brochure to pick her classes, ticking boxes on the vague notion she’d specialise in children, maybe, in kids who’d been taken or abandoned, and help them find their childhood again). The people were too much. Tons of people like her -- great in high school, but not good enough for a decent college out of state -- and older people too, people who reminded her of her dad (not that he’d gone to college; he used to joke that that was all above his pay grade, No, no, I’m happy where I am! Although Mandy knew how avidly he poured over science magazines, and how impressed he was with Apple and that computer stuff. Maybe in another world he would have done something else, been someone great. Maybe it runs in the family). Mandy felt boring in turning down invitations to parties or even drinks down the campus bar. She’d cite anything -- Pete’s homework, the long drive home, dinner waiting -- and soon that got old. She felt old. Like she’d skipped the fun part of her twenties and jumped right into middle age. It didn’t help that everything after ‘84 melted her brain into goop. The minute Mandy received her final marks from school, she shoved the paperwork back into the envelope and hid it with her dad’s old things. The word failure pounded in her head. How did it happen? How could she have gone from mathletes and cheer to barely scraping by? To holding on by a thread? And why? Why did it all affect her so much; why was she such a damn baby about everything? Pete was back safe. That should have been enough, right? But his return didn’t come with everything. Somewhere between Pete disappearing and that Christmas, Mandy cut herself loose. Swapped SAT prep for making spaghetti for her returned little brother. Watching reruns on TV until it was way too late, tucking him into bed. Some nights she didn’t want to leave him, so she put out a sleeping bag on the floor by his bed between him and the door. Just in case. Mandy always wanted to go to Oberlin for one reason: it was far away from Devil’s Knot (and, okay, she liked the name). Ambition was a thing she wore because it fit, not because she liked it. Watching her dad’s face light up when she showed him her grades was reason enough to try hard; and studying with Bobby made her feel light, if only for a little while, them laughing and whispering about D&D campaigns, teasing each other like siblings. Being smart felt good, even if it didn’t come wholly naturally, and Mandy worked damn hard to keep it up. Giving it away should have been freeing. Instead, Mandy knows she disappointed everyone. She’s just another person who raced to the state line only to stop dead, toes at the edge, and feel fear prick the back of her neck.

Becoming the Villain Wrangler
So . . . that thing I said earlier I might try? Posting new stuff that’s not pictures? Well, here’s this. It’s a flashbacky sort of scene about characters from my current WIP, Average, Ohio, about superheroes and supervillains in suburban Ohio. It’s about 2.5k, and most of it is hiding behind a cut so it doesn’t clog your dash. Here goes nothing, I guess. Enjoy.
--
She started with Sonos.
She was fourteen, and she knew that Sonos didn’t “do kids.” She knew that 84% of Sonos’s premeditated hostage situations took place in establishments where either coffee, baked goods, or both were available, and she knew that the baked goods and coffee combo hostage situations tended to be safest. So far, at least, no one had died in a Panera or a Starbucks.
She also knew that, despite popular and professional opinion, Sonos’s bakery hostage situations did actually follow something like a pattern. She spent hours and hours in her bedroom surrounded by police reports transcribed and translated into color-coded index cards carefully taped to her blue walls. Nobody ever tried to head off Sonos’s hostage situations because they seemed completely random, the whims of a flighty, unpredictable super with a penchant for drama and chocolate pastries.
But the color-coded, meticulously-arranged index cards on her wall whispered that maybe the whims weren’t so random after all. There was definitely a cycle, even if it wasn’t quite regular—almost every twenty-one to twenty-seven days, except when it was more like forty-five, Average could count on a hostage situation somewhere. And Sonos had four favorite spots to hit: the Panera at the Plaza, the Starbucks off 42, the Bagel Brothers by the schools, or Servatii’s downtown. Sonos very rarely hit the same spot twice in a row, except when she did, and she almost always timed it to the tail end of a weekday rush, except when she didn’t, and she never ever hit a Starbucks in the same month that jewelry stores got robbed.
There was a break-in at Jared’s on Sunday, Bagel Brothers was still being renovated from last month’s super battle, and twenty-two days ago the hostage situation was at Servatii’s.
Maddy Cox had spent every waking moment at the Plaza’s Panera.
It was the second week of her summer vacation, but she’d been preparing for this since April. Every morning at 10:02, she locked up her bike outside the Panera, ordered a smoothie, and parked at the smallest table she could find to do summer work until lunchtime. She was going to be a sophomore, so on top of her reading and essay for English, she had APUSH work to do, too. So far, it had been an uneventful week at Panera, so Maddy was almost done reading Rebecca, which she didn’t think was as bad as all her older friends complained it was.
She was finishing her third panini of the week when Sonos and a small squad of henchpeople stormed the dining room.
“No screaming today, please,” Sonos announced. Her voice came from nowhere and everywhere all at once, even though Maddy watched her lips move. “If you have to panic, use your inside voices and get it out of the way now. Everyone knows how this next bit works, right?”
A woman somewhere to Maddy’s left started to shriek. Behind her mask, Sonos’s eyes narrowed. She was cradling her hostage situation shotgun—the one Maddy tracked to every hold up incident since Amp suppressed her powers years ago at a Graeter’s and left her undermatched—in her left arm, but with her right she reached out and snatched the woman’s attempt at a scream. All the sound in a three-foot radius died, and the woman’s hands flew to her throat.
“Maybe I asked too nicely,” Sonos said quietly. The hairs on Maddy’s arms stood straight up, and a hush only Sonos could have intensified fell over the dining room. “Don’t. Scream.”
The woman gulped a few breaths of air silently and nodded. Sonos released her hold on the sound, which died away like it had never existed. By that point, the henchpeople had taken up their posts around the dining room, and a few were herding employees out of the kitchen. The henchpeople were armed—they were always armed—and Maddy forced herself to take a few calming breaths. She would be okay. Sonos didn’t do kids, after all. Maddy would be fine. She just needed her window of opportunity.
“Better,” Sonos said with a nod. “Now, who’s the manager, here?”
The next few minutes passed like déjà vu. Maddy had read so many reports about it that she knew the script: The manager emptied the safe, got Sonos however many pastries she asked for, and resumed being hostaged with her employees; the henchpeople made their rounds through the dining room gathering cash and other valuables that were easy to turn into cash; all phones except for one were confiscated, and guests were told to pack up their things. As Maddy packed up her APUSH homework, an odd sense of calm washed over her. She had, after all, been planning this for months. She’d even purchased a brand-new two-pocket folder with brads for the occasion.
Now her backpack was full and zipped on the floor beside her chair, the yellow folder was next to her empty plate, and Sonos was making her dining room rounds to dismiss unsuitable hostages, namely those under eighteen and their parents or guardians. Maddy watched her send two young families, a set of grandparents with a gaggle of ten-year-olds, three girls Maddy recognized from school, and two very pregnant people to the booth Maddy thought of as the escape hatch by the side door.
Then Sonos approached Maddy’s table, without the shotgun because she always left it on the counter when she dealt with minors and their responsible adults, and gestured. “You too, kid. Up.”
Maddy took another deep breath and stood, pulling both straps of her backpack over her shoulders and scooping the folder off the table. “Um, actually, Ms. Sonos, if you have a minute I was wondering if we could talk.”
Her voice came out squeakier than she wanted it to, which she remembers even years later, and even though she’d spent hours rehearsing in front of the mirror she still hadn’t been able to keep the vocal pause from slipping out, but every time she hears Sonos tell the story the villain kindly skips over that part. Instead, Sonos makes her sound brave. She likes when Sonos tells it.
Sonos hesitated, her mask deforming at her forehead in what Maddy later understands as a double eyebrow raise, and said, “You realize this is a hostage situation, right?”
Maddy nodded. “Yeah. I’ve been waiting all week.” She offered the yellow folder, where she had written SONOS in the top right corner in her neatest handwriting in black Sharpie. “I have some ideas.”
Sonos’s mask deformed further, and a tinkling laugh like wind chimes escaped her lips and breezed through the dining room. For a moment, Maddy became very aware that they had a wide-eyed, terrified audience, and she forced herself to focus on Sonos again. This was probably her only shot to make this work.
“You a super? Cuz I don’t do sidekicks. Or kids,” Sonos said.
Maddy shook her head. “No, I’m just ordinary. I don’t want to be a sidekick. I want to handle your public relations.”
“I’m a supervillain, kid. PR is a thing that happens to heroes.”
“And I don’t think it’s fair that they get all the good press,” Maddy says. “Supervillains are people, too, not just monsters.”
“But monsters sometimes?” Sonos asked.
Maddy held her gaze. “Everyone is a monster sometimes.”
Sonos studied her face for a few nerve-wrackingly long seconds. Maddy didn’t look away, but became aware of one of the henchpeople moving. It was so quiet in the dining room that even Maddy could hear the number pad on the one unconfiscated cellphone as the henchperson started to dial.
“Wait,” Sonos said, still looking at Maddy but rerouting her voice so it was very clearly directed at the lead henchperson. “There’s been a change in plans, Larry. No hostages today.”
Larry ended the call before it connected and said, “Sure thing, boss. What do you need?”
Sonos considered for a moment or two and said, “A couple smoothies and an empty building.”
“You got it,” Larry said with a nod. He separated the store manager from the rest of the employees to have her make the smoothies before reorganizing his crew to herd the hostages quietly outside.
By the time the manager had finished the smoothies and brought them to the booth Sonos had seated Maddy at, the Panera had emptied. Only Sonos, Maddy, Larry, and the manager were left, and Larry handed the bag of confiscated cellphones to the manager before hurrying her out the door and issuing instructions too quiet for Maddy to hear. Sonos called, “I’ll be in touch, Larry,” after him, and Larry nodded and vanished. Sonos and Maddy were alone.
Sonos pushed one of the strawberry banana smoothies across the table toward Maddy before taking a sip of her own. “All right, kid, I’m officially curious. What’ve you got?”
Maddy cleared her throat, hoping she wouldn’t squeak again, and opened the yellow folder. It wasn’t quite a perfect match to Sonos’s suit, but it was close, and it made Sonos smile. “I’ve been volunteering at the children’s hospital for a while, specifically with community involvement.”
Sonos was still slurping her smoothie, but she nodded. “Ah. Wound up with the Be-a-Hero Foundation?”
Maddy nodded. “Sort of. Just the logistics side—figuring out which kids wanted to talk to which super.”
“Cute.”
“It was pretty cool,” Maddy admitted, “to see their faces light up when their hero walked into their room. Every kid, every time.”
“Do-gooders have that effect, I’ve been told.”
“Supers in general have that effect,” Maddy said. Sonos’s eyebrow arched, and for an instant Maddy wondered if she should scale it back, if she was being too forward, but the instant passed and Sonos didn’t seem angry. Just curious. Maddy pulled a patient profile—one she technically wasn’t supposed to have, but she’d gotten approval from Kyoko’s parents so she thought it would be okay—out of the right-hand pocket and pushed it toward Sonos. Sonos set aside her smoothie to study the sheet, which had a color photo of Kyoko at the park and some basic information.
“Cute kid,” Sonos said after a couple seconds.
“Her name is Kyoko,” Maddy said. “She loves swimming and horseback riding, and her favorite band is One Direction. She has stage three brain cancer and maybe three months left to live.”
Sonos’s lips set into a thin line, and Maddy realized that the super probably wasn’t that much older than her. She’d only been villaining in Average for a couple of years, and most supers started fairly young. Now that Maddy was seated across from her, she saw how smooth Sonos’s brown skin was, except for a concealed zit on her chin. She was probably early twenties, if even that, which was still old but not, like, parents old. That was weird.
“Because she’s terminal, she’s eligible for the Be-a-Hero Foundation,” Maddy continued. “And when I asked her who she wanted to meet, she said you.”
Sonos frowned. “Come again?”
“She wants to meet you, Ms. Sonos. She says you have the coolest costume and the coolest power and she wants to be able to break things with sound when she grows up.”
Sonos silently laid the profile flat on the table again. For a few seconds, the dining room seemed unnaturally silent. Maddy counted time to keep her nerves under control and let Sonos think.
After two full minutes, Sonos exhaled a, “Huh,” and sound resumed. “That’s sweet and all, but there’s no way her parents would go for it.”
Maddy shook her head. “No, I checked explicitly with her parents, and they think it’s a long shot that you’d do it but they’d be cool with it if you were. They just want Kyoko to be happy.”
Sonos lifted an eyebrow. “And the hospital? And the Foundation?”
“If you were willing to see Kyoko, I would deal with them.”
“And law enforcement?”
Maddy nodded. “There’d be something horrible about arresting a super who was visiting sick kids in the hospital, right? My dad is on the force, and he said that was true. I could deal with that part, too.”
“Why?”
Maddy frowned. “I don’t understand. Why what?”
“Why are you doing this? What do you get out of it?”
“Oh. Well, I think it’s important for the kids. Plus, if I want to get into good colleges, I need to have a long-term community service project.”
“And you picked wrangling supervillains? You’re what, fifteen? Sixteen?”
“Fourteen,” Maddy said, and Sonos laughed her wind chime laugh.
“Ambitious, for sure. Seriously: Why supervillains?”
Maddy hesitated. She’d known that Sonos would ask—Sonos always asked—and she’d known what her response would be. It was just that the whole situation was more intense than she’d anticipated. Even volunteering at the hospital, she hadn’t been this close to a super for this long, and she’d certainly never held a conversation like this one.
“Because you’re people, too,” she finally said. “We’re all in this together, and everyone should get a chance to do good.”
“I’ve got chances to do good all day every day. I choose not to.”
“But you’ve never gotten a chance to choose Kyoko before.”
After another moment, Sonos sighed. Maddy continued laying out her ideas and rationales about why, in the long run, having some positive PR on the villainy front would benefit Sonos. She left Kyoko’s profile on the table as she walked Sonos through the rest of the folder’s contents.
At the third repetition of “Ms. Sonos,” Sonos said, “Just call me Sonos, kid,” and ten minutes later, when Maddy had done all her explaining and Sonos had taken it all in, she asked, “What’s your name?”
“Maddy. Maddy Cox.”
Sonos smiled and finished her smoothie. “Well, Maddy. I’ll think on it. Give me a couple days and I’ll get back to you.”
Maddy beamed. “Great! My number and email are in here—you can call or text or email or whatever. This is for you.”
Sonos smiled when Maddy offered her the folder. “Came prepared, huh?”
Maddy nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah! I, um, sort of figured out your pattern—don’t worry, I didn’t tell anyone or anything, your secret’s safe with me—so I’ve been waiting all week.”
“I’m impressed, kid. Maddy.”
Maddy felt a blush creep up her neck, and she stood when Sonos did. Sonos offered a hand, which Maddy shook, and then Sonos asked her to stay in the booth for two more minutes while Sonos cleared the scene. Maddy did, Sonos left, and two minutes later she walked out of the Panera for a very weird encounter with the police. When her parents showed up, they weren’t thrilled, but they agreed to see where things went because it was important to Maddy and everyone knew Sonos didn’t do kids.
Four days later, Maddy got a call from a restricted number, and Sonos said she’d give it a whirl. It took Maddy two weeks to get everything squared away with the hospital, and the Foundation, and law enforcement, but on the third Thursday in June, Maddy and Sonos and a very skittish guard detail walked into Mercy Children’s.
It made Kyoko’s whole year.
The visit was so successful that it was easy to persuade Sonos to come again for Ben, and for Jake, and Rachel, and Maya. Once Maddy was comfortable with Sonos, she asked the super if maybe Ratman or Firebrand would be interested, and Sonos passed along her proposition. Soon Maddy was the liaison for the villains, much like how Shanu Adebayo was the hero herder.
It was Sonos who eventually affectionately dubbed her the Villain Wrangler.

Many health-care workers have not gotten a coronavirus vaccine – The Washington Post
Roy Lakes wasn’t planning to get a coronavirus shot until he overheard a Zumba instructor urging her attendees to sign up. “You owe it to your kids, to your grandkids, to stay around,” the instructor kept saying.
Those words changed his mind. The 46-year-old from Anaheim, Calif., who has worked as a mental health counselor, has now set up an appointment with his doctor to discuss getting vaccinated.
Health-care workers were the first group in the United States to be offered coronavirus vaccinations. But three months into the effort, many remain unconvinced, unreached and unprotected. The lingering obstacles to vaccinating health-care workers foreshadows the challenge the United States will face as it expands the pool of people eligible and attempts to get the vast majority of the U.S. population vaccinated.
According to a Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll, barely half of front-line health-care workers (52 percent) said they had received at least their first vaccine dose at the time they were surveyed. More than 1 in 3 said they were not confident vaccines were sufficiently tested for safety and effectiveness.
The nationally representative survey of 1,327 front-line health-care workers, conducted Feb. 11 through March 7, illustrates the challenges ahead as vaccine advocates try to persuade a wider population — with less familiarity with medicine — to get vaccinated.
While about 2 in 10 health-care workers said they had scheduled a shot or were planning to, 3 in 10 health-care workers said they were unsure about getting vaccinated or not planning to do so. As many as 1 in 6 health workers said that if employers required them to get vaccinated, they would leave their job.

Vaccination rates are particularly low among health-care workers who are Black, those in lower-paying jobs such as home health aides and those with less education. Partisan politics also play a role, with more Democrats saying they have been vaccinated and Republicans more likely to express uncertainty or concerns about the vaccines.

“Health-care workers are everybody,” said Bruce Gellin, president of global immunization at the Sabin Vaccine Institute. Gellin noted that the hesitancy and disparities encompass a range of health workers, from front-line infectious-disease doctors who followed the vaccine science and approval process carefully to home health aides who may have little access to such specialized knowledge — or to the shots — in their work settings.
The Post-KFF survey is the most comprehensive survey of vaccine adoption across the health-care workforce, encompassing those working in hospitals, assisted-living facilities, patient’s homes and other health-care delivery settings. Other studies echo the findings. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that by mid-January, 38 percent of staffers at long-term care facilities in the agency’s vaccination program had received a first dose. Becker’s Hospital Review found that among eight top-rated hospitals, between 63 percent and 84 percent of employees had received at least one dose by mid-February.
The new vaccines were shipped immediately after receiving emergency use authorization from the federal government. And because health-care workers were the first to be offered vaccinations, some took a wait-and-see approach.
“There was very little time to prepare health-care workers for the vaccines,” said Kelly Moore, deputy director of the Immunization Action Coalition, which promotes vaccine education.
Now that more than 75 million people have been vaccinated, with very few side effects and broad-based national educational campaigns being launched to counter concerns, experts hope vaccine confidence will increase among health-care workers and others.
Swaying those minds toward vaccination will determine how quickly and completely the United States is able to bring the crisis phase of the pandemic to an end.
“Unless we all do it together, we’re not going to be victorious over the virus,” Gellin said.
‘I don’t think there is enough research’
The more people are vaccinated in the coming weeks, the closer the country will come to herd immunity, slowing the ability of the virus to transmit. But if large groups of the population never get vaccinated, the virus will continue circulating and mutating.
Even among health-care workers — who have seen the devastation of the virus up close and work in a field rooted in science — 36 percent expressed doubts about the safety and efficacy of the vaccines, a rate that closely mirrors that of the general public.

While individuals’ explanations for that hesitancy vary, they often revolve around three core ideas: safety, efficacy and trust.
About 8 in 10 health-care workers who were not planning to get vaccinated against coronavirus or were on the fence said they were waiting to see how the vaccine affects others and were worried about adverse side effects. About two-thirds of those unvaccinated and without plans to get vaccinated said they did not trust the government to ensure the safety of the coronavirus vaccines.
Rather than considering the critical mass of vaccinated people needed for herd immunity, people are often thinking on an individual level and want an answer to a simple question, Gellin said: “Are people like me taking this vaccine, and how are they doing?”

Shelly Robinson, a long-term care nurse in Upstate New York, said she sees many covid-19 patients but does not want to risk getting a shot, because she feels the vaccines were rushed.
“I don’t think there is enough research,” Robinson said.
Many elderly patients have gotten vaccinated, she said, to be reunited with family members. But for now, she intends to rely on her mask for protection.
“I’m going to wait,” Robinson said. “Me and my family will keep wearing the masks until there are more studies done.”
One of the starkest numbers from the poll shows that 16 percent of health-care workers would rather give up their jobs than get vaccinated. The poll finds 58 percent of health-care workers who are not self-employed support their employer requiring all workers to be vaccinated. Among Americans who are not health workers, 70 percent say people who work with patients should be required to get a coronavirus vaccine.
“I’d quit if work told me I had to take it,” said Sandy Hull, 65, a registered nurse who lives just outside Indianapolis. She works in a prison and in a behavioral health setting for adolescents. “I wouldn’t run the risk of ruining my health to continue working.”
Hull said she believes the coronavirus exists and that she takes general precautions such as washing her hands and wearing a mask, but she said she believes that the virus’s dangers have probably been exaggerated because of political and financial concerns.
“It seems to me if it was as contagious as they say, I would have probably ended up catching it,” Hull said.
[‘We want to be educated, not indoctrinated,’ say Trump voters wary of covid shots]
Even though many health-care employers require influenza vaccines, Moore, of the Immunization Action Coalition, warned against enforcing coronavirus vaccination as a term of employment — at least for now.
“Mandates can be counterproductive” unless they follow extensive confidence-building programs that are designed to address employees’ concerns, she said.
“They come after, not instead of, educational efforts,” she said.

‘I was so glad to get the shot’
The Post-KFF poll finds sharp income and educational differences in vaccination rates of health-care workers. More than 7 in 10 health-care workers with postgraduate degrees had received at least their first dose, compared with over 6 in 10 of those with bachelor’s degrees and 4 in 10 of those with an associate’s degree or less.
Some health-care workers cannot access the vaccine, even if they want to get it.
Samuel Charles Jr., 67, handles intake of patients at a primary-care doctor’s office in Chicago, taking their temperature and paperwork. Despite the high volume of patients he interacts with, Charles does not know why he was never offered a coronavirus vaccine through his job or his status as a health-care worker.
It was only because he was in the University of Chicago’s hospital’s system as a former patient that he was vaccinated at the end of February. Suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, he almost died in 2019 and spent two weeks in an intensive care unit. The hospital called and offered him a shot, given his underlying conditions.
“I guess I was lucky in that sense. If I hadn’t almost died, I wouldn’t have been on their list for the vaccine,” Charles said. “I was so glad to get the shot.”
The income disparity among health-care workers is clear. Nearly 7 in 10 health-care workers with household incomes of $90,000 and above said they had been vaccinated. But that dropped to about half of those with incomes between $40,000 and $90,000 and to roughly 3 in 10 of those with incomes even lower than that.
Michael Kauten, 59, has been wanting to get vaccinated for months. Even before the first vaccine was approved in December, he said, he would have been willing to get it. He worked a lower-paying health-care job in a long-term care facility for adults with disabilities, but by the time some health-care workers were starting to get vaccinated at the end of December, cutbacks brought on by the pandemic resulted in Kauten getting laid off.
Still, working as a volunteer firefighter in Wisconsin, Kauten should have been able to get a shot as a first responder, but his deeply rural department still has not received a supply.
It wasn’t until a few days ago that he learned he could sign up for the shot at a local drugstore such as Walgreens, he said. No one told him, and he was too busy struggling to find a new job.
“I had no idea,” Kauten said. He recently was hired as a long-term substitute teacher at a local school and is scheduled through the school department to get a shot at the end of the month.

The Post-KFF poll underscores the importance of employers providing vaccinations to health-care workers. Nearly 8 in 10 of those who said they had been vaccinated received doses from their employers. Hospitals have been most effective, with 66 percent of those who work directly with patients in hospitals receiving at least one dose, compared with 50 percent of those working in nursing homes or assisted-care facilities, 39 percent of those who are self-employed and 26 percent of those working in patients’ homes. Just over half of those who work in doctors’ offices said they had been vaccinated (52 percent).
Among health workers who planned to get vaccinated but had yet to make an appointment, just over 6 in 10 said they planned to do so through their employer, though roughly 3 in 10 said their employer had not offered them a shot.
Access is one of the key variables in people’s decision about whether to go through with getting a vaccine, experts say. When people are on the fence, having easy, convenient access can often tip the balance toward vaccination.
“We don’t need every person to be a champion, just comfortable enough to choose to be vaccinated,” Moore said. That means making sure the actual process of vaccination is convenient, considering factors such as work schedules and child-care needs.
‘I was a lot more comfortable’
Partisanship matters when it comes to vaccination, with 48 percent of Republican or Republican-leaning health workers saying they had received at least one dose, compared with 58 percent of Democrats. Over a third of Republican health workers, 36 percent, said they were uncertain or did not plan to get vaccinated, compared with 21 percent of those identifying or leaning Democratic.
Race is one of the strongest predictors of vaccine disparities.
The Post-KFF poll finds that 57 percent of White health-care workers, 39 percent of Black health-care workers and 44 percent of Hispanic health-care workers said they had been vaccinated.
Tumblr media

Overall, 53 percent of health-care workers say they have been encouraged by their colleagues to get vaccinated. But only 4 in 10 Black health-care workers say they have been encouraged by their colleagues to get vaccinated, compared with over half of White health-care workers and just over 6 in 10 Hispanic health-care workers.
Robinson, who is Black, said the government’s history of mistreatment of minorities — including the infamous “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male” in 1972, in which Black men with syphilis were left untreated — is one reason Black Americans remain skeptical of coronavirus vaccines.
[Biden’s vaccine push runs into distrust in the Black community]
Lorena Esquivel, 28, a patient access representative at San Ysidro Health in Southern California, worried initially that not enough time had been given to clinical trials. Access to colleagues who were ready to answer questions was key to her decision to get vaccinated.
“All that knowledge. After that, I was a lot more comfortable,” said Esquivel, who is Hispanic and has received both doses.
“Even after being vaccinated, there’s a possibility I can still get the virus,” Esquivel said. “I’m not immune. Patients feel like they are immune and they are not. The vaccine helps prevent them ending up in the hospital.”

‘It is the only way we will get to the end of this pandemic’
James Conway, 47, knows several co-workers who remain scared of getting the vaccine, and he has wanted to change their minds. Conway works as a respiratory therapist at a hospital in St. Louis and has seen up close for the past year the death and suffering caused by the virus.
“It is the only way we will get to the end of this pandemic,” Conway said. But he has been careful not to press too hard or get into debates with co-workers.
“It’s like the patients I work with, you can’t force the respiratory therapy on them,” he said. “Approaching it that way is futile.” Instead, he often tells patients about his struggles with asthma and how such therapies have helped him.
Similarly, he has been asking co-workers about their vaccine doubts and trying to listen to them without judgment. And he ends those conversations making sure that they know that he got the vaccine and that he has not had an adverse reaction.
“I think that’s more persuasive than getting into argument,” Conway said. “For a lot of people, the only thing that will change their mind is time. Once they see others are fine and nothing went wrong, they will be more willing.”
For Lakes, a 46-year-old from Anaheim, thinking of his children made him want to get vaccinated. He spent 12 years working as a mental health counselor before the pandemic forced him to stop working.
“I would hate for my kids to be cursing me at my grave for not taking it,” he said.
[After months of trauma, vaccinated health-care workers welcome a surprising emotion: Hope]
The Post-KFF poll finds more than 9 in 10 vaccinated health-care workers said they experienced minor side effects (60 percent) or no side effects (34 percent). Among the 6 percent reporting “major side effects,” the most common were similar to those found in clinical trials: aches and pain, tiredness, headache, fevers or chills. A separate January study found that across 17.5 million doses given in December and January, just 66 resulted in severe allergic reactions, none of which resulted in death.

Mindy Darling, a nurse practitioner in Arizona who works in three nursing homes, said she devoted time to reading up about the research and listening to experts.
Darling, 38, who is White, says she is now passing on that information. She recalled an informal gathering with nurses and patients pulling up in wheelchairs, when she discussed the potential for long-haul covid-19, as opposed to the short-term side effects of a vaccine.
After the conversation, the assistant director of nursing came over. “That’s a good point about the effects of the disease,” Darling recalled her saying.
Darling was pleased to see that people in leadership positions plastered the walls of one facility with a simple poster listing their names.
“We are taking the covid vaccine,” it read. “Ask us why.”
Addressing health-care workers’ concerns is particularly important, Moore said, because they tend to wield great influence with their families and friends, as well as with their patients.
“Fix this problem and it’s going to be better for everyone,” Moore said.
Scott Clement contributed to this report.

Emo music is gay.
I love That 70′s Show. I’ve been called pretty. I’m vain.
I don’t label my sexuality.
I don’t really label my gender either.
I have a thing for the 1920s; everything about it was magical or close to it.
Photos of drugs interest me. I am taking Sign Language classes, or know Sign Language better than most people.
I have liked someone for the past four years or close to that time frame.

Lately, I’ve been listening to either really old school music or the popular songs. I’ve been trying to write a book for ages.
If I lived back in the 1920s, I would have been a total flapper. I’ve never smoked weed in my life, not even a tiny hit.
For the fact I have never taken a hit of weed, I feel rather proud of myself since most people have tried it at least once.
All my exes are gay. I’m not even kidding you.
I love wearing dresses; I just feel so nice in them. Another thing I love wearing? Combat boots or just tough-looking boots in general. I probably check out girls more than guys check out girls.
I’m mostly friends with guys because I just get along with them better.
My favorite part of my body is my boobs. I’m a senior in high school currently.
I don’t feel like I’ll live past the age of 25.
I have a very twisted mind; I think things quite differently than anybody else. I’m the biggest contradiction you’ll ever meet; I say one thing and do another.
I hate everything that seems to be popular in society.
If I had to put myself into a category for a political view, I’d be a libertarian. I want kids, but I don’t want to get married.
Both of my parents are unemployed, or underemployed.
I have a hard time accepting love and compliments from others.
I believe everyone deserves good things in life.
I love having my hair short, or would love to cut my hair short if I could pull it off.
My back really hurts if it’s cold outside.
Also, my hands are colder than the rest of my body.
I’m such a cynic for myself but for everyone else I’m optimistic. I’m starting to get into mediation and yoga to relax myself so I don’t have as many problems as I do.
I make everything a way bigger deal than it should be.
I have a random urge to clean my room right now, and I really should do that sometime.
I love noses and earlobes on people.
I’m really bad at memorizing things.
If I had to kill myself, I’d kill myself with a gun.
I’ve never been out of the country, though I wish I have been.
I’m always hallucinating.
I only recently learned how to swallow a pill.
I wish I had more time to read, or had the energy to read. My dream career would be to be a therapist.
I’m such a terrible dancer, but I’ll dance in front of everyone anyway.
I try to always be myself, no matter what. I don’t understand why people number bolding surveys. There isn’t anything that would be better than staying with my current boyfriend for many years, maybe even forever.
I’m interested in hallucinogenic substances.
Shamanism is something I find fascinating. It’s amazing how they heal and go about their spiritual practices.
If I HAD to choose which religion my beliefs most closely follow I’d choose Buddhism, even though it’s not even really a religion.
I’ve seen episodes of America’s Next Top Model.
^The Tyra Banks Show is better, though.
I’m mainly subscribed to survey sites on Xanga, but there are also a few peoples’ personal and graphics sites mixed in there as well.
KiD CuDi is seriously amazing.
My significant other was born during a summer month.
I have a StumbleUpon account.
^I’m addicted.
Lots of bolding surveys I see lately aren’t long enough for me to bother taking.
I’ve had a red, green, or silver car.
I have a facebook. University and school in general is largely overrated.
I would rather hire a midwife than give birth in a hospital environment.
^This is because I’ve worked in a hospital, with the moms and babies, and have seen how fucked up shit can be there.
I believe there is already a cure, or more than one cures, for cancer that we aren’t privy to. The health industry is corrupt. I’m never sick anyways and have no major health problems or complications. I’m moving soon.
People have criticized or judged me based on actions or beliefs before. I stopped believing in God as depicted in Christianity in high school.
My best friend throughout high school was/is Hispanic. I’ve lived with a significant other at some point.
I know a Mexican with red hair.
Alien abduction and UFO’s are two things I’m definitely interested in.
I’d prefer for my wedding dress to be a color other than white.
^Not that I even want to get married really, anyways.
I dislike surprises, generally.
I’ve seen boys cry. I have more than five siblings.
Sometimes I find random change laying around and it kind of creeps me out because there isn’t an up front reason for any of it being there.
I often crave food that isn’t good for me. When people at a restaurant get my order wrong I don’t stress about it because I understand that shit like that happens. ^I think it’s crazy when people freak out or get really rude about things. You’re going out to eat, and especially with fast food, what do you expect? I haven’t really seen my ex since we broke up.
I’m currently unemployed but am looking for a job…hopefully one that I can enjoy. I’ve had five jobs in my lifetime.
^Six if you include temporary positions, or something that wasn’t really a job that I got paid for.
I couldn’t wait for my sixteenth birthday.
Whenever I take leftovers home from a restaurant, I usually leave the to go box in my vehicle and forget about it until it’s too late.
My hair and eyes are the same color, about. I feel like I know some people on tumblr better than I know my own friends, sometimes.
I don’t have many friends, at all.
Marijuana is the only one who always has my back…humans aren’t loyal or trustworthy enough.

Walking in a Straight Line Ch 17 - a little sneak peek
*rubs hands together nervously*
I don't usually do this (although I do love it when other authors do it) but I feel this will hold me accountable to finishing Chapter 17 in a timely fashion. Also, this story is set during Thanksgiving/Christmas, so it feels like as good as time as any.
HERE IS A SNEAK PEEK OF THE NEXT CHAPTER OF MY NEVER-ENDING AU WIP.   You can find Chapter Sixteen HERE to refresh your memories because it has been 84 years.  The line of poetry (mis)quoted at the end of this sneaky peek is by John Donne.
~*~
Kathryn’s eyes widen, a sure sign Emma’s actually managed to surprise her for once. “You want two weeks’ vacation time so you can go to England for Christmas and New Year?"
“I know it’s last minute, and I totally understand if it’s not possible-” Her hands hidden behind her back, Emma crosses her fingers as she offers her employer a bright smile. It’s an old habit from her childhood she can’t seem to shake, no matter how many times it’s been proven the gesture doesn’t make a wish come true.
“That’ll be fine.”
Emma blinks. On the other hand, maybe there was something to finger crossing after all. “Seriously?”
“Why the hell not?” The other woman flashes her a knowing smile as she reaches for the laptop on the desk in front of her. “Who am I to stand in the way of true love?”
Heat prickles at the nape of Emma’s neck. She’s always admired Kathryn’s ability to read people, but it’s never as much fun when that laser sharp gaze is trained on her. “Oh, I-” she begins, then breaks off, because there’s no way to finish that sentence without incriminating herself.   “Thanks. Really, I mean it.”
“Don’t mention it.” To Emma’s relief, her boss quickly returns to her usual brisk self.  “God knows you deserve a break after helping take down your ex, and to be honest, I was thinking of closing up shop for the holidays and taking the kids to Vermont to see Freddy’s parents.”
The passing mention of Walsh invokes the usual internal shudder, but Emma shakes it off, something that gets a little easier every time.  “Sounds nice.”
“Oh, his parents hate me,” Kathryn announces with blatant satisfaction. “Having me there will totally ruin their Christmas, I’m quite sure, so it will be nice.”  She flicks a glance in Emma’s direction. “Shouldn’t you be booking some flights right now?”
A flutter of nervous excitement (it’s not dread, definitely not) uncurls in her belly at the mention of flights, and her smile feels a little pasted on as she takes a step backwards in the direction of her boss’ office door. “Your in-laws still don’t approve of Freddy being a kept man?”
The other woman scoffs, her fingers already flying over her laptop keyboard. “You’d think they’d be grateful their son bagged himself a rich heiress and has the luxury of helping raise their beautiful grandchildren, but there’s no pleasing some people.”
Back at her own desk, Emma goes through her usual morning routine, flicking through the Midas Bonds database and flagging several new tips that have come in from their usual sources.  If nothing else, it’s a good distraction from the niggling anxiety tugging at her insides.  She should be ecstatic she’s just managed to swing two weeks’ vacation time at very short notice, but instead her head is filled with everything that might go wrong on this trip.
What if they turn out to be terrible travelling companions? How much togetherness so soon in their relationship is too much?  What if she has one of her stupid foster home nightmares while they’re staying at Liam and Annie’s and she wakes the whole house up?  She tries ignoring the most insistent unwelcome thought, but like these things always do, it keeps coming back again and again.
What if Killian’s family doesn't like her?
Emma frowns at her laptop. She’s met Liam only once before, years ago, and they’d got along just fine, but that was during a fleeting trip to Boston and involved nothing more than a drunken dinner at the local bar that had left her with a memorable hangover.  She’s never met his wife, but Killian has already assured her more than once that she and Annie will ‘love each other’.
Hmmm.
She works steadily for the next two hours, pretending her phone isn’t buzzing with incoming messages, before finally admitting to herself that she’s read the report on a new skip three times without absorbing a single detail.  Taking a deep breath, she picks up her phone and scrolls through four – no, five – texts from Killian.
How did it go with Kathryn?
Perhaps you’re out catching a villain.  I shall be patient.
Swaaaan.  Can we start packing our winter woollies? Don’t leave me in suspense love!
My brother just asked me if I’d mucked up our relationship yet.  Twat. Perhaps we should just go to Paris instead.
Emma, are you there?  Everything alright? :(
Her heart wobbles at the sad emoji at the end of his last text. This morning she’d promised to let him know straight away if Kathryn agreed to her taking some time off, so what the hell is she doing?
Panicking that things are moving too fast, that’s what she’s doing, she thinks darkly.  She shouldn’t be surprised.  It’s been her MO for so many years, and it seems old habits can be very hard to break.
“I need coffee,” she mutters to herself, then gives herself a mental slap. What she needs is to talk to the sender of those text messages and let him calm her ruffled nerves - something at which he excels - and soon she has her phone pressed to her ear, willing him to pick up.
“So, was I right?”
She blinks.  Not exactly the greeting she was expecting, she has to admit.  “Hello to you, too. Were you right about what?”
His chuckle drifts warmly down the connection. “Were you were out catching a villain this morning?”
The boyish glee in his voice makes her smile. “Sorry to disappoint, but I was chasing down leads from my desk.”
“You haven’t been able to speak with the lovely but stern Kathryn as yet?"
“No, I talked to her earlier,” she admits, then presses her lips together, catching her tongue too late, because now he’ll think-
“Ah. She said no, I take it?” There’s a soft sigh at the other end of the phone line. “I’m sorry, love. I would have asked you sooner, but things between us weren’t quite there -”
Unable to bear the disappointment in his voice a second longer, she cuts him off.  “She said yes.”
Damn it.  Her tone sounds flat, even to her own ears, and she winces. There’s a silence that stretches out for a little too long, making her squirm, then he clears his throat. “Excellent news.  Shall I book the flights?”
Nervous anticipation swoops through the pit of her stomach once again, her fingers tightening around the phone in her hand. “Um, I’m not sure what day my vacation starts yet.”
“Swan.”  That one word is infused with a wealth of gentle emotion, and she feels her eyes blur hotly. “What’s wrong?”
Nothing about this conversation is going how she wants it to go.  “It’s nothing, it’s just - can we talk about flights and stuff tonight?”
“Emma.”  Again, his voice is beyond gentle, and she’s very glad Kathryn’s office door is now shut, because she’s pretty sure her face is flushed to go with her teary eyes. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t feel ready to do, and that includes spending Christmas with a gaggle of Joneses.”
She can't help her loud sniff, but suddenly she’s smiling. “No, it’s good. I want this. I really want to go.”  Just like that, just like always, his simple words managed to cut through to the heart of the issue without making her feel like an overemotional wreck. She knows she’s still got a lot of self-preservation techniques to unlearn, but as he’s told her more than once, he’s a patient man.  “I don’t know about a gaggle of Joneses, though. Isn’t it just Liam and his family?”
His answering laugh is more of a scoffing sound.  “Considering our erstwhile father’s penchant for philandering, anything’s possible, but I’m fairly confident you’ll only have to deal with one other Jones brother on our Christmas adventure.”   Before she can reply, she hears a muffled sound at the other end, as though he’s covered the phone with his palm, and his next words confirm her deduction.  “Sorry love, duty calls. See you at home?”
“I’ll be there.”
Whoever had stepped into his office must have stepped out again just as quickly, because his voice takes on a sultry tone that has her toes curling in her boots. “With bells on, I hope?”
She grins, snatching a quote from one of the many books piled on his bedside table in their apartment, letting more than a hint of suggestion thread itself through her words. “Ask not for whom the bell tolls, Jones.”
Yet another pause, but this time she can almost picture his throat working as he swallows hard. “As long as your bell tolls for me, my darling, I’ll die a happy man.”
