An upcoming main cast character in a story I'm working on is a multigender boygirl, and I'd really like to (as with all my writing) make sure my characterisations and writing reflect and represent real experiences as much as possible. I've also started asking other multigender folks so I can get an even better pulse on it than just my own experiences and knowledge, so - the question.

What sort of internal experiences would you like to see expressed in the writing of multigender characters, especially boygirls?

Some general things I'd enjoy seeingI

In general, I'd love to see the different ways people conceive of their genders. There are so many labels, now and and throughout time- I like boygirl, but also manwoman and androgyne. Some people used to use "bisexual" as a description of gender. And multigender people often have such diverse ways of seeing their genders & the way their genders interact. If one of someone's genders technically aligns with their AGAB, some might feel partially cis and some might see that gender as equally trans. I think it would be lovely to see multigender characters who are really deep and complex and feel like a full person, and also have their genders considered a meaningful part of them.

Multigender sexuality, if it makes sense to incorporate it into the story. It's something that gets very heavily policed (and I personally have had to deal with the trauma of having mine policed) and I'd love to see some represention of what it's like to have multiple sexualities/labels. There's also the complicated topic of relationships, and how multigender people interact with those. There's concerns of your partner/s being comfortable with your genders, and being respectful of them. A couple people on that other post made the good point that multigender people aren't depicted as desirable partners. At least some of us worry if we could ever be desirable, because we fear our multigenderedness makes us too complicated and strange for people to actually consider as partners. & on a less sad note, there's also how different people describe their relationships; spouse? wifesband? boygirlfriend?

Atypical medical transitions! There's still not enough awareness of how genderqueer transitions can look. I, personally, would enjoy seeing a character who is also multigender and salmacian, (although salmacians can be any gender), especially because it's so rarely heard of by people outside of porn. But you could also use stuff like different ways of doing HRT, like SERMs & other stuff (can't be fucked to find links rn but if anyone wants to add atypical HRT methods go ahead)

The daily ins-and-outs of presentation, pronouns, and names. I'm someone who changes their presentation pretty regularly, who sometimes prefers different pronouns, and generally prefers different names based on the dominant gender/s of that day. I also tend to crossdress; I dress much more femme when I'm a man and much more butch when I'm a woman, although I always stay androgynous. Some people may be gender conforming for one or all of their genders, some people may not vary their presentation at all!

Related to above: the struggle of everyday binarism. you are surrounded, especially as androgynes, by the forced choice between genders, especially male and female (just by virtues of those being the most discussed and compared). People expect you to be able to fall in one, OR maybe to fall in male, female, or neutral- but ime people generally don't think about you falling in multiple. It's an issue on things like forms that ask you to choose just one gender, or using bathrooms. It can be daunting to speak up about your experience as any gender, both because it might cause people to view you exclusively as that gender, and because you worry people will discount your experiences because you are multigender. People often don't think of us as fully any of our genders, in comparison to monogender people. You may not want to include discrimination in your story, but if you choose to I would enjoy it because I'm the kind of person who prefers stories that tackle those issues to ones where they don't exist.

Shapeshifting. I feel like it's a near universal genderfluid desire. Absolute ideal body situation tbh

february: straight trans girl!! buguary is also t4t suprise! i think her parents were really supportive growing up, and shes just unapologetically feminine i love her for it

taz: kind of nonbinary kind of gender fluid she doesnt care whats in her pants? a knife. also butch lesbian because i love her. i dont think they've ever been in a relationship really (shes a 16 year old leutenant i dont think shes had that much free time) but if they were to be it would NAWT be a man

up: genders a bit wobbly but mostly masculine. he/him but doesnt really care about pronouns, i think pre-injury he was pretty hegenomic - and also very unconfident in his masculinity. but after his recovery, and after his talk with bug, hes kinda found himself out! Technically cis but literally who cares. also i think hes gay

specs: transfem nonbinary i have never seen a cisgender computer programmer/j. any pronouns but primarily they/she. i think growing up they always had really long hair so people kept mistaking them for a girl and eventually she just stopped correcting people lmaoo. also silly hc: specs was a nickname given as a kid because of their glasses that just kinda stuck. also aroace. maybe lesbian.

krayonder: trans man for sure, he/him. kind of an unrelated headcanon but i think he wears alot of stupid fucking graphic tees (alpha wolf howling at the moon, galaxy space pizza cat etc) and cargo shorts and its horrifying for everyone involved. also bisexual (damn son you get no bitches for real)

tootsie: trans man, he/him but honestly he doesnt give a shit hes just here for a good time. to me, farm planet is actually really accepting gender wise it was pretty chill ! doesnt really label his sexuality at all but i do think hes been attracted to men in the past

mega-girl: technically sexless but uses she/her, im not sure if that counts as being trans but shes gender enough so it counts. surprise tootsie&megagirl are ALSO t4t(ish) get hit with my beam. i think genders a little weird for her because while she "is not a woman" (her words) she is a megaGIRL unit so. im not sure if that means shes programmed with gender or not, either way she is comfortable with she/her pronouns so Shrugs. also sexuality wise she doesnt really label but Technically pan

junior: honestly, token cis man. im sorry hes awful /LH I LOVE HIM. tbh i think he would have to take ALOT of introspection and alot of therapy to even BEGIN to be thinking about his gender. embodiment of that "i might be nonbinary but i have a job so idc about that rn" tweet. he/him but with a bit of self care he/xe 😈 hes also gay but he has a job so he dc about that rn

saw a post about the fandoms use of the word chussy and how violating and disrespectful it is and it really got me thinking. not going to name the op because I am absolutely not trying to argue with their take which is clearly fueled by very real anger and hurt, and I fully respect their opinion. so please understand that im not trying to start #discourse and anyone who does so on this post will be blocked (eta: please feel free to disagree with this post and let me know that you do/argue your point. by discourse I mean the annoying and pointless brand of internet arguing that we all know and hate). all that being said, here’s my take on the issue:

1. the post raised some excellent points about the desecration of the body and the implications of sexual assault that the nonconsensual alteration of gideons body carries. so first off: this is absolutely an important point and it’s something that needs to be taken into consideration. additionally, the oversexualization of butches is a huge problem and the use of the word chussy undoubtedly plays into this. all of these things must be acknowledged and respected.

2. my analysis of the joking nature the fandom has taken towards gideons chest wound is that this attitude is fueled by grief and discomfort/despair. muir tends to take her characters past their breaking points and explore how that impacts them, and that is a really hard thing to witness as a reader, especially when it’s a character as beloved as gideon, especially when the change from the first book to the third is so stark. imo, people simply don’t know how to handle these feelings, and funnel them into black humor. inappropriate? yeah, probably. but I think what’s crucial here is that this is a coping mechanism for very real feelings that are stirred up by these books. people aren’t being irreverent purely for the sake of it (though there’s definitely some of that too), they’re processing uncomfortable emotions stirred up by this - crucially - fictional character

3. arguably, this reaction was also brought on by muir herself. violence and sex are inextricably tied in this universe. harrow and ianthe have multiple sexually charged scenes that are explicitly violent - the scene where ianthe knifes harrows hand and obviously the bone arm scene. the dios apate scenes are laden with hatred, deception, and a desire to literally murder one of the participants. joli thinks nona and cam are being prostituted. palamedes’s love interest turns out to be murdered, and he tries to kill her killer in return. pyrrha has sex with a corpse. while the sexual aspect of it is never discussed, harrows conception is marked by genocide. even the excerpt of alecto that muir shared earlier this year combines a description of personal struggle and torment with explicit yonic imagery. this is all to say, the concept of gideons wound being partially sexual within the text is not far fetched at all. i would honestly be surprised if alecto doesn’t address this in some way, either in a joking way or a serious way (knowing muir, probably both). for all muir’s faux outrage over the term in the q&a earlier today (technically yesterday), she always knows exactly what she’s doing and dare I say more or less exactly how the fandom is going to react to things. im certain she anticipated that people would draw a connection between the wound and sexuality. now, muir intentionally planting this subtext does not negate any problematic aspects of said implication. but I think it’s important to note that it’s not purely a “fandom joking about serious topics” thing - it also falls on the writer

overall, I think it’s a very nuanced topic, as with pretty much everything pertaining to muirs work. bodily autonomy is a huge theme in tlt and there is a certain flavor of ignoring or defying muirs message in making a joke out of the bodily violation that gideon has suffered. however, again, i a) think the jokes stem from a place of understanding muirs intent and the discomfort that arises due to this and b) maintain that this is not a case of the fandom disrespecting a creators message but rather the fandom running with the context and tone of the source material. and finally, I want to emphasize that this is a fictional character, and while attitudes toward fiction 100% affect reality, I doubt that the people making these jokes would do so if they were aimed at a real person.

i fully invite conversation on this post and I would love to hear what you guys think, particularly butches (I am a lesbian who considers myself gnc but not masc/butch and i would never presume to speak for/over butches, especially on a topic so important). i don’t mean to be a killjoy, but after reading that post and reflecting I do think it’s important to explore the ramifications of these jokes before continuing to make them.

OKAY SO BASICALLY in homestuck canon jane is the heiress to this big giant (evil) corporation. but over all she's fairly kind and does her best to be a good friend (albeit she's skeptical and bad at stating what she needs from people until she gets angry). then the homestuck epilogues just. DECIDED to make her irredeemable? and evil? and a xenophobic capitalist who's lowkey taking over the world? like... a big thing was her relation with the big bad (who literally STRANGLED HER, MIND CONTROLLED HER, and more). and then they just decided ""yeah she's basically that now""? like come on she doesn't deserve that.

Became a genocidal xenophobic dictator in the epilogues. The comic gives John a tearful reunion with her dad and she gets nothing

Anyone who read Homestuck^2 knows that she was uh. Made into a racist cheater in the sequel. So there could be another villain. She wasn't perfect in the og material but christ that's outright character assassination.

hi im the sane person that sent that super long jade harley submission. anyway before i start i need to point out that jane is one of my fave characters and i love her so in the original comic all i have to say about her is that she didnt get a finished arc which is sad . shes basically a super sheltered heiress to a baking empire and as a result she has a lot of pressures on her to act in a certain way and her arc was about like breaking free from that i guess. so like for example she was expected to be super fem and be a girlboss housewife because her evil alien grandma was trying to manipulate her into being the perfect heiress but once jane gets into the game shes like naw fuck that and becomes awesomely butch & wears a moustache. i dont have anything against the crockerteir part of her arc (in summary it was a part where she got mind controlled by her grandma and temporarily regressed to the star pf her arc but like ten times worse and also evil) cause i think its a necessary part of her arc and low points are important for conflict .

HOWEVER it kind of just… ended there. like arquius freed her from the mind control and then she flew off with jasprose and then her story just ended there with no further development which like sucked because it wouldve been a good point to like jump off of and give her an actual finished arc but it was sooooo rushed and skipped over which is a shame because i found her story to be really interesting and then it just ENDED right after the arcs low point instead of ending like a normal arc and having more progression after the low point. it sounds nitpicky but honestly if you read the comic jane and the other 3 of her friends get such abrupt ends to their stories it was like the author realised the webcomic was too long and just cut it short early. i forgive them for that though. there are a ton of characters in the comic and even though jsne was technically the protagonist for half of the comic I understand that the author was juggling like 100 different characters. HOWEVER this bad ending for jane left a door open… for the worst writing decision ive seen in my life… in the homestuck dubious canon sequels (‘fanfiction’ written by the a team of people including the comics original author, available on the homestuck.com site and therefore relevant to this conversation despite their dubiously canonical nature) JANE WAS ABSOLUTELY BUTCHERED IN THE SEQUELS!!! they completely stripped her of her of all of her character development that happened in the original story and they turned her into a villain. they made her into a human version of her evil alien grandma. this was ABSOLUTELY caused by the fact that her arc ended abruptly right after the crockertier mind control thing and also caused by the fact that people in the fandom didnt like her cause there was a scene where 2/3 of her friends didnt show up for her birthday so she got sad and yelled at her other friend and then immediately apologised and everyone thought she was evil for doing that😭 anyway so in hse&hs2 jane was turned into an evil xenophobic dictator that started a war against the trolls for some reason and also they made her wear pencil skirts which is so messed up cause she needs to wear trousers she butch… get her out of that.

the also took away her epic moustache :(. its just really sad because its such a stupid direction for her character to go in i dont get how they could just reverse her character like that out of the blue for no reason. oh wait yes i can get it… its cause shes a GIRL and the homestuck 2 writers hate women (refer to my jade harley submission) . half joking about that. jane was a great character and then in the sequel they made her evil and racist and turned her into a complete other character because they wanted conflict but they killed off the evil alien grandma lady in the original comic so they just took jane and made her into the evil alien grandma because people didnt like jane so they knew no one would notice how much they fucked her up.

UGH! worst part was that they made her straight in homestuck2 as if she wasnt a huge lesbian in the original like she literally called a crazy magical catgirl lesbian hot and then flew off into space with her and they hung out for the rest of the story before her arc got cut short and then they had to audacity to make her marry a dude in the sequel. fuck everything 😡😡😡SHES A LESBIAOOONNNN it’s literally gay erasure cause the writing team of the sequel didnt like her 💀💀💀😭😭😭AAAARUHHHH

Honestly it's so weird whenever I see people talking shit about or having mspec lesbians in their dni because I just feel so disconnected from that label. Like technically I'm an mspec lesbian, but I'm also an ace bisexual, and a non-binary boy. I'm not an mspec lesbian I'm just a lesbian. I'm just a dyke. If someone on the street saw me they wouldn't question "I wonder if that kid is actually non-binary. I wonder if that kid is just a gnc bisexual." If they saw me and my partner holding hands they wouldn't think "what a lovely pair of gnc transmascs." No they'd think "oh look at those butch lesbians." And if they're not as nice they'd think "look at those fucking dykes." Because it doesn't matter if my partner is also my boyfriend, or if I think men are hot. I still love women. I still have to stop myself from glancing or staring too long whenever I see a pretty girl in public. I still look at girls and think about how hot they are. Before I was a dude or bisexual or queer first and foremost I was a lesbian thinking looking at girls and loving girls and being attracted to girls and wondering why. Why was I the only one doing this. Why did I feel like this. I'm not an mspec lesbian, I'm just a lesbian

It's also so weird because just a few years ago a lot of my lesbian friends were bi, but they're still fucking lesbians. That wasn't something that got questioned, you just liked women and you were a lesbian. The only people who ever questioned us about it were fucking straight people and that also annoyed the hell out of us. But now I'm seeing people in my own community saying I can't use a label I've been using since before their egg even started cracking because im "mspec." Suddenly that label doesn't belong to me? I've seen people online talk shit and know, logically they're talking about me. But there's no connection there because i'm not an mspec lesbian im just a fucking lesbian !!!! I'm a dyke !!!!

I'm not even angry because again I just feel SO disconnected from this conversation, even though I'm the group that exclusionists are targeting. Like, I've said like 3 times but im not an mspec lesbian I'm just a fucking lesbian

i’m actually getting more and more into art recently, and wondering how you landed on your specific style, also, do you use procreate? or something else? i mostly do traditional art styles but i love to learn more about digital art

im sorry you’re anxious at the moment, i am too if i’m honest. i guess we can both find a little comfort in acknowledging it but also knowing that these feelings will pass (as my therapist would say lol) 🫶🩷✨

hi!! that’s so sweet—it means a lot to me that you see yourself and your gf in my art. my whole goal for the butch & femme portrait series was to create art that our community would be able to see themselves reflected in, because for so many of us that doesn’t happen very often.

it’s awesome that you’re an artist too! i’m sure you don’t need art advice from me, but i can try to describe how i landed on my current style at least.

so i tend to switch up my style a lot (if you scroll for long enough in my art tag you’ll see what i mean lol), but i knew i wanted this portrait series to feel cohesive. i also wanted something with kinda shaky, imperfect lineart and a lot of texture. just because i feel like i am able to put more emotion into a piece when it isn’t technically polished, for some reason.

then i just kind of experimented with procreate brushes until i liked the result. i use the “evolve” brush on procreate, usually with opacity turn down low so i can build up my colours in layers. and then i had to practice lol

anyway, i hope you have fun with digital art if you end up getting into it. it’s brought me a lot of joy over the years.

Technically i have freckles all over my face but i only really count the ones that are darker and in a line under my eyes and over my nose, the other ones aren't prominent enough to call them freckles imo. And i'd feel more than lucky if you did worship me, sweetheart<3

I would love to take you to the gym with me, it honestly helped me with my depression as well! And of course i'd watch over you sweetheart<3 i wont lie, i love to go after dark bc theres less people. And i had the same problem but now i catch myself and try to stand straighter. I mostly lift weights when i work out so I know my posture improved due to needing to have a straight back to lift. Plus its super fun imo!! I miss the gym so bad but i hate going alone. I also miss feeling sore, im a bit of a masochist so i love feeling sore the day after working out🤭

Last series: i finished Evangelion for the fourth time recently! this was to show it to my girlfriend and watch her Writer Analysis Brain kick into overdrive haha

Last movie: Who Framed Roger Rabbit! watched with a couple friends - it's a pleasure to watch the animation mesh with the live actors and is very technically impressive. also its got good jokes.

Currently working on: finally moved into my new place today. im gonna miss my old apartment, but god damn moving out of there was stressful for everyone involved. it sucks that my last memories of it are colored with those emotions but ill live. looking forward to having the spoons for creative projects again :3

First, found this movie from early 80s (pretty sure ‘81) called Night Warning/Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker and 👀

I didn’t even know about it but it has an actual interesting plot and a lot of VERY GOOD reviews, so now im curious

AND SECOND it fucking happened again, this man has been an even bigger part of my childhood then half seeing Twister sometimes, and it both took me out and made me feel like an absolute fool for never noticing it

First off: I've heard of Butch Baker Nightmare Maker but never had an interest in watching it but with the reviews and...Stuff....Now, I suddenly do. It's so strange. Wonder what it is? 👀 (FFFFFUUU- He looks so good there omfg I swear if Severen would have stripped off his jacket at least once in the movie I would have been FERAL🥵 )

Secondly: lolol Ikr? He's such a softboy (Little yanadere ngl. Like tone it down, Paul.) in Mortuary I honestly felt so FUCKING bad for him tho. It's hurting me that I can't spoil anything but people really failed him and his character is the most interesting thing about that movie.

It's campy, certain things were unnecessary plot holes and the lead actress imo wasn't as good as the actor playing her boyfriend and Bill as Paul but it's worth the watch at least once! Technically, a slasher just an lesser known one. Look at his gay lil run ☠️😭 That alone should be the only reason needed.

Third: Bro idk WHY but a barely remember Spy Kids 😬 Idk if I just wasn't interested as much as a kid or if it's just been that long 😅 But yeah it does not shock me at this point. He played so many characters from serious to goofy throughout his entire career (Which is kind of refreshing bc so many actors only play serious cash grab roles as they get older then there's middle aged Bill like 3 decades in the business playing a character called Dinky Blinks ☠️)

He was also in the Titanic which shocked a lot of ppl including me like that hair and tan completely disguised him.

And I forgot to add this to the watch list (IDK HOW IT'S ONE OF MY FAV MOVIES WITH OR W/O BILL) but Frailty is really good. I LOVE psychological thrillers with twist endings especially if they're done right and Frailty is one of the best ones I've ever seen (Bill Directed it too!)

It has Religious Trauma in it so if ur sensitive to that then I get not watching it but its really well done AND Matthew McConaughey is the leading role AND the child actors were amazing idk who they are but if they were that great as kids I'm sure they went on to be major Actors and I just don't recognize them.

Claymore review

An extremely overlooked cult classic. It's probably the butch lesbian fantasy of all time.

For a good time for the most part I still think everyone should read it!

The Anime

this is probably the first time ive preffered watching the anime than the manga. Personally i found the beginning of the manga drawn too plain and thought the story telling was illustrated in a rather boring way and honestly i dont think the Norihiro Yagi was at the level he needed to be with choreographing fight scenes in a comprehensive way at the time and i just had to go ahead and watch the anime instead mostly because i could finally understand what was happening in scenes.

I really liked the anime however in the i am always inevitably a manga over the anime fan til the bitter end. It actually made me really angry to find out they had to drastically change a bunch of major plot elements and even make up a bunch of shit just so they could wrap up the anime in a nice way. Like i kind of understand why but it was actually such a corny and confusing ending it actually made me really angry lmao (ESPECIALLY HOW THEY REPLACED THE SCENE WITH JEAN SAVING CLARE WITH RAKI INSTEAD)

The Characters

For the most part I really liked everyone but of course I absolutely despised Raki. I do not blame anyone who couldnt bring themselves to continue or even start the series because of him because it took so much out of me to continue regardless of his almost pointless presence.

Like I kind of understand its because hes sort of supposed to expose and ground Claire's humanity but i really think it was still possible to do that without him even existing. hes kind of really a walking character device isnt he? Like im pretty sure Jean's existence was enough.

So anyways i think everyone else was really cool.

setting/genre/lore

I really dont know how to start with how much i admired everything. I really liked the legion of really cool/scary/pretty butch lesbian warriors, the concept of youma/awakened beings is so interesting and i love how horrifyingly beautiful they all are, I was super into how little i fucking knew about the organization.

In general everything is so unique and fresh I like everything about it. It pains me to no avail acknowledging that this is the only series asides from berserk thats a dark fantasy and even worse understanding both of them are technically over and its extremely maddening knowing nobody wants to draw dark fantasy manga anymore

creature design

i fucking love monsters so of course I have to discuss the unique appeal of the creature design in this series. One of the greatest things i absolutely adore from Yagis designs for the awakened beings is the stark contrast of a creature that is frightfully elegant.

I have to praise Yagi for also being the only other artist asides from Kentaro Miura whos considerate about exploring different shapes and forms for the overall silhouette of his creature designs.

Another specific aspect I greatly admire from his designs is that hes probably the first artist ive come across whos capable of mixing mostly scaled/armorlike textures on a monster while still retaining an air of tension and an organic looking design.

from my own personal art and observation from other creature designs from all sorts of artists I find it almost impossible to have these textures while retaining said elements of design because i think it gives it more of a "cool" vibe than a scary one.

Up until this point I was quite convinced its only feasible to have scales/armor-like textures on a monster if you balance it with a fleshy texture (approximately 70-80% fleshy and hard textured for the 20-30%) but Yagi truly is a genius or something because hes the only artist i know whos capable of making designs that are like 90% armor but its still somehow gives you chills.

So anyways heres a list breaking down my deepest feelings about my favorite awakened being designs:

1. The destroyer

I actually havent ever seen a monster design so grand it took my breath away. Theres too much to love about it. Out of all the awakened beings nothing radiates such a thick aura of radiance and absolute terror than this design alone.

The whole idea of two sisters lovingly trapped together to become a greater and unstoppable creature is so overwhelming it really makes me shiver with delight and terror. Ive never felt so strongly about a design before so I really think nothing else will outdo this unique sensation.

Its just so fucking cool!!!!!!! I'm obsessed with religious iconography so i really adored how it was shaped like an angel and devil at the same time. i thought it was super fascinating how it would relentlessly and indiscriminately shoot everything and everyone in its radius with pieces of itself warped into more awful abyssal creatures that could even manipulate and transform anyone it stabs itself into. its all just so coollllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!

2: Isley

i thought isley was a really weird guy and i probably hated him but i cannot deny how I think his awakened form was soooo cool. Isley is the prime example of what i was talking about with balancing textures on a monster. Super cool design i like it a lot

3: the awakened girl that showed up during ophelias first appearance

god i really wish i could properly admire her with knowing her fucking name. Quite an ephemeral appearance but she had such a unique look to her despite everything I've seen throughout the series i could never forget her. She's probably the defines the general features and theme of what awakened beings should look like. A trend setter dare i say.

4: Cassandra

VERY interesting silhouette. its not often you get to see a humanoid like body be treated like somewhat of a quadruped. Its interesting how its something vaguely erotic and terrifying at the same time. The multiple heada that snaps its jaws on anything that gets near it is a fantastic touch.

5: Riful

overall a relatively simple design but its the simple things that are always the most fascinating isnt it? I really like tangled looking monsters. Not much to say except slay honestly lmao

6: Jean

She was only in this form for such a brief moment but it was such a striking design I couldn't forget it. If find the most unforgettable things are usually the most fascinating things in turn. Such a gorgeous yet terrifying thing. I hope i dont sound like a psychopath saying this but the visible helplessness being trapped in an awful and radiant body is very beautiful to me.

7: Miata

quite a short appearance but i really liked the silhouette of her awakened form. I wish there were more panels showing more closer details of it. not much to say about this other than i think its really neat!

8: europa

literally just a ball with several spines attached to it and i could say its a bit lazy in comparison to everyone else but theres sm attention to the finer details of the spines i cant get mad at it. I know you're supposed to focus on the arms with this design but i actually like this design the most for just the face. The upside down doubled face is really interesting to me and i admire it a lot for some reason.

9: the abyssal eaters

probably one of the most terrifying creatures in the whole series and maybe somewhere up there in my hierarchy of the most scariest monsters in a manga. i LOVE LOVE LOVE the whole idea of them so much bc theyre so fucking scary!!!!!! Very simple design but i never get to see stitches ENOUGH in media (which is a huge shame because its one of my favorite features to draw with body horror) so it makes me happy that all of their faces is just stitches.

THE STORY and the series as a whole

i really wish i could say i loved everything about it but everything I loved about it in the beginning basically disipated in the end. I think the main issue lies in the fact it all started in a very simple but effective manner but yagi ended up over complicating everything by adding too much. I don't scorn Yagi at all for the almost sudden and utter collapse in quality writing because its sort of an inevitability with titles that go on for a very long time. But I still think it's important and valid to explain my fascination with it in the first place.

I really liked the overall simplicity it had with everything. The plot at the start was very simple and straightforward: a woman who gives up her humanity to avenge the death of her only family. Not a unique plot of course but it obviously was the main character herself and companions (excluding raki ofc lmao) who really makes up the story.

I really liked how Claire was never the strongest. She really appeared to be but comparatively speaking to her fellow warriors she pales immensely. And I think its that remaining humanity I really liked the most about Claire. I REALLY liked how cohesive her group was and I was so impressed with the storytelling and character building in the beginning because at the time I thought this was the only other series I like I could think of other than Dorohedoro where theres a lot of characters that show up but you actually manage to sincerely remember them because they all have meaning. Too many times i run into series who introduce too many characters solely just to keep the story fresh; but none of them have any real purpose to them.

I also was obsessed with how well Yagi was with building tension throughout the story. To me I think its really hard to find series who are able to capture their readers with a good sense of tension.

The characters in this series are quite overpowered, but In the beginning I found it extremely admirable how Yagi was still able to make the reader feel anxious about whether or not the protagonist or their companions would persevere againt their adversaries. Yagi had a very good sense at balancing everyones strengths and flaws in a very balanced way.

But again with the sands of time it couldn't stay this good forever. To be completely honest it took a lot out of me to read the rest of it. It came to the point where i was so lost and frusturated about how confusing everything got i was just trying to read it just so i could be done with it?

I think my main problem with the series as it ended was how unfocussed it got with the plot. I feel like everything immediately got so muddled after the fight with Rigardo. Maybe it's just me but I honestly was ok with never understanding the organization I was mostly just interested in what was going to happen with the main cast with the abyssal ones and such. It actually made me really angry how the battle scenes got so stupid overtime with how it became one of those series where they overexplain the characters' tactics for a very long time. I initially really liked the battle scenes because they dont talk too much and they just simply fight, i really really hate it when anime/manga does the latter actually.

I don't really know how i feel about the ending honestly. I don't know if im satisfied with how claire somehow turned into teresa and she killed priscilla instead but i guess it was nice? I don't know how i thought it was all going to end but i would have never expected it to be like this and i dont say that in a good way but more of a confused way if anything. I wouldn't say it was a bad ending? but I guess thats okay???

anyways, despite all my criticisms i still think its worth the read and the credit it deserves in the end. It's really weird how it went on for so long but no one ever seemed to care? that makes me quite upset actually.
