hey so what's up with ganke's design in the spider-verse movies?

this is what he looked like in ultimate comics: spider-man #2, his first-ever appearance (as drawn by sara pichelli):

this is concept art of ganke from spider-man: into the spider-verse: the art of the movie. the first image is by seï riondet; the second is by shiyoon kim. i am naming the artists in this post because i believe in giving credit where it's due, NOT to single anyone out.

now compare and contrast kim's version of ganke with the final character paint by wendell dalit.

the latter design is how ganke appears in the movie spider-man: into the spider-verse.

and this is how he looks in the sequel.

call me crazy but i cannot think of a single reason for these changes other than fatphobia 🤪🤨🤨🤨

HAPPY PAUL BUNYAN DAY!

Not sure what the Pines were looking for on their hike, but running across a couple of legends is a nice bonus!

Aside from the iconic statue in the town of Gravity Falls, and the OTHER iconic statue at Mystery Mountain, I was always intrigued by the little side about Stan invoking Paul Bunyan in his hour of need. (And really, given how they defeat Darlene, ol' Paul came through in the end. In a manner of speaking!)

CIPHER CULT KICKSTARTER DOWN TO THE LAST 17 HOURS!

(as of 11:00 pm EST on Thurs. March 21st. Meaning, it should end between 4:00pm-4:30pm EST on Friday, March 22nd. I don't know the exact time that it will end.)

The most important piece of info in the latest update (from tonight) is:

"Unfortunately we will not be using Backerkit as our post Kickstarter third party survey. So you will not be able to add-on your order after the campaign ends. Both KS and Backerkit combined will take too much of a percentage, so that is why we are putting up the last two products mentioned above now. We appreciate your understanding in this."

Campaign backers are often used to being able to add items to their pledge after the campaign ends, when they are confirming their pledge. However, the above statement makes it sound like NOW, before the campaign ends tomorrow (Friday 3/22/24) is the ONLY time you will be able to add on any of the extra items shown above.

This is pretty crucial info! So if you have pledged and were thinking about adding on later, NOW is the time to do that.

each ninja was a different kind of teacher (except Lloyd who basically went on a year long press tour) and it also explains why Rebooted and after they seem a bit more responsible than in season 1 and the pilot

Cole has my favorite teacher characterization because he's objectively an interesting person with cool hobbies but when he is responsible for a group of children he just becomes Dad Who Is Helping Out At The Summer Camp. we never see his classroom, but given his proficiency in the arts we can assume he's the English teacher

since he went to art schools, he's probably not used to kids who aren't actually interested in what's being taught. the louder kids seem to dislike him (ref: running gag of "Mr Cole is the worst"), but that doesn't mean he's necessarily a bad teacher- just not one to humor pranks

also his and Kai's teacher outfits belong in the 1970s. I like the touch of making their ties the same color as their gis

little bit of meta: most of the people who worked on this show went to school in the 80s/90s so to them "older/boring" teacher outfits would look like this. also, as someone who was in the intended age range and saw it at the time of release, this sort of clothing conveyed that the ninja were doing a stuffy adult job- juxtaposed with their colorful gis

Kai appears to be the history teacher? his teaching style is likely structured and straightforward. given his nontraditional childhood, his frustration with the kids likely comes from both his jealousy that they aren't aware of how valuable schooling is and that Nya was much easier to work with when she was their age. at the end of the day he's an older brother who's now in charge of a bunch of kids

he's using an old-fashioned projector with film, which I assume (1) shows how low-budget they are, (2) emphasizes that Kai is out of his element (pun not intended), and (3) juxtaposes them with New Ninjago City

Zane is the one who doesn't know what a vape pen looks like but will listen to you infodump for an hour after class, then drive/walk you home because you missed the bus. he probably doesn't get any of the classroom humor or notice if the kids make fun of him. I can't imagine him ever getting angry at the kids, and he probably is very good at keeping them to a routine and a schedule

in rebooted episode 1 he seems to be teaching science? and the use of catapults is actually quite endearing- he's probably explaining tension and going to get his kids to make little models, which shows that he both is a pretty good teacher and hasn't realized that giving elementary/middle/primary schoolers their own catapults will only lead to chaos

he and Jay have personality-based outfits, with the snowflakes being an obvious allusion to Zane's element and the zig zags on Jay's emulating lightning

the little bowtie on Zane reminds me of Bill Nye the Science Guy (program with a a host of the same name who taught kids about science in a fun and accessibly way- very nostalgic for kids who went to american public school)

Jay is the exhausted teacher who's more interested in his hobbies than class material, and if you get him talking about that hobby, he won't stop until the bell. as a jokester, I think he'd get along well with the kids and definitely encourage them to annoy the other ninja

we don't see his classroom, but given Jay's skills he's probably the math teacher. he'd have a difficult time explaining things in different ways- very gifted people who learn well on their own often find it hard to teach things to others, though he would make sure he doesn't leave anyone behind

Nya definitely teaches math classes, but she probably handles tutoring as well since she's well-balanced in most subjects. it would also give her an intelligence network- kids come to her room after class/during lunch to complain and gossip. she uses it in the noble pursuit to antagonize the others

J'onn's head shape changes throughout the historical group photos of the jl in the background of several panels during final crisis: requiem- he trusts this team, he loves this planet, and slowly takes on a more martian form. his subconscious comfort around them physically manifests as his body allowing itself to take a martian shape (all IDs in alt text)

he was like a grandfather or a father to some of them, a mentor to many, and a friend to all. the fact that Nightwing finds him dead is so powerful because, in this continuity, Dick has known J'onn since his time as Robin. Dick is frequently at the beginning of modern heroes (Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) in DC, so him being the one who finds J'onn feels very full-circle

the usage of "Martian Manhunter" vs "J'onn" is of note as well. when the Secret Society is fighting him, they only refer to him as Martian Manhunter, while every single hero calls him J'onn

the day after J'onn died, a telepathic link is activated in the minds of Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Hal Jordan, Cynthia Reynolds, and Dinah Lance that causes them to record and recite J'onn's history of Mars. not only did he trust them to accept his martian form, he entrusted them with his account of his almost dead civilization. and they not only keep that promise by combining their part of the account into a book, but they also bury him on Mars so he could be reunited with his home at last

Superman being the orator at the funeral becomes even more fitting when J'onn recounts meeting a young Clark Kent in Smallville. they share not only a history, but a burden: as some of the last members of their civilizations, aliens on Earth, and heroes, J'onn frequently lent an ear to Clark's troubles

Batman is not known for his displays of affection, but the end of the comic makes clear that Bruce will miss him. with his cowl off, he leaves a single choco (the DC's version of oreos) on J'onn's casket and calls him an old friend before leaving back to Earth

J'onn's steady presence in the league is so important to their ability to come together, not just as an organization, but as a community. it is not the same without him

CIPHER CULT KICKSTARTER UPDATE! ADD-ONS ARE POSSIBLE!

Hey, folks! Just received an update on this -- if you backed the Studio Bad Egg kickstarter in any way, you will have as well. But this also involves NEW customer pre-orders and some new info.

Here's what the latest update said:

Just wanted to update to help with any confusion. Surveys for address' will be sent out in two weeks. That being said, we have decided to bite the bullet and do Backerkit survey, as it will help us navigate better for any extra add-ons, new customer pre-orders that we will have, and all of the existing pledges!  When you get your surveys, we also put up, as an extra add ons, the Voodoo Dolls from the previous Alex Hirsch collab as well as soldout The Owl House merch! This way you can save on shipping and not have to order twice!  Now bear in mind, the surveys will be sent April 5th and you will have until April 19th to fill out your survey. PLEASE make sure to fill them out or we wont know where to ship your items come August.  We are currently receiving an influx of emails and will return to them on Monday!

So, again, this is NEW INFO and it reverses what was said the other day when the kickstarter was ending (in this post here).

Especially the ability to order the plushes from the last round, too.

I'm honestly not sure what to tell people who did not back the kickstarter, but who might want to get in on the regular pre-orders for the items (or some of the items?) -- I mean, I don't know where to tell you to go for updated info on that. I think only people who backed the kickstarter before it ended can get the updates from that.

I guess one thing to do is keep an eye on the Studio Bad Egg Instagram.
