Uh this triggered something long, SHIT , you don't have to read it lol sorry QWQ MY DREAMS ARE MOVIES ATP AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA alr well it was a little weird but bassically: me and my fam [even my dad for some reason but not my lil'est sis] were in a barn, and there were a lot of people there also sick, my dad was really sick [to the point where he was laying down, unable to open his eyes], the most sick. He was on one of the hays in the corner, the only one without doctors around him for some reason I was at the entrance of the barn area so I walked forward a bit and I saw a pig/white dog [can't remember], and I walked up to it cause why not. There were 2 men also next to the animal, 1 of them was js there so i dont remember him well, but the other one looked like litterally straight out of the 1890's, he had a tophat and a walking stick for some reason lol. I looked at the animal and made some kind of remark [i forgor, sorry, my memory is shit and i'm writing this at night, probably will continue in the morning], the man laughed and [im going to translate it but it might not make sense, since it was in arabic, which is something i rarely dream in?] said "remember that people and animals are the same [/neg, as in, animalistic], don't view them any different". I just nodded and then walked away, exploring the rest of the place. [although i believed the info] It was mainly just me like looking at the sick peeps and i saw the pig/dog running/jumping around from area to area, also looking at the sick people, pretty quickly, but they still never went to my dads area. [idk why but that was an important detail in the dream lol]. So after i finish inspecting and stuff, my mum tells me we need to go somewhere and we needed to go get stuff [she wasn't specific, and again, it makes more sense in arabic]. So we go, leaving the middle sibling as she became sick and a little tired as well, and the dream then skips to when me and my mum come back, my mum is holding a plastic bag filled with stuff i didnt know and im js holding chocolate [granted, i ate chocolate before bed so that may have affected it lol], but when we came back the place was mostly empty, only my dad in the corner [it was very far away and barely noticable but he was there, it was a really big place, more than 100m fs], and my sister in the middle-ish front of the place, next to a doctor in the barn and yk the docters stand in hospitals that they wheel around? with a screen? yeah she was next to that. My mum was mad at the doctor cause she was like 'oh as soon as we left, she got sick, it's the doctors fault, blah blah blah', and she started being angry at the doctor. After hearing my mum yap for a bit i js went up to my sister and she was very tired and she looked very sick, i bassically chilled with her, and we were talking as i ate my choc bar. I thought she was going to die in the dream but at the end she didn't, so yippee! Then another time skip happened and we were now all sitting at the side area of the barn and sitting on hay [btw i've never actually lived in a barn? or been to one that looked like that lol], and the doctors came up to us and were like "Oh yeah your husband [they were talking to my mum], died". and my mum deadass turned away from him and then the vibe suddenly was off [anxiety, it got like a scarier feeling for some reason], and she said "But his soul is still alive". I looked at her, then at his place, where his body was still there, but the body was dead, and a bad vibe hit me [idk how else to explain feelings help] and i said "His body is dead but his soul is still alive, he's alive" And then the dream fucking ended MY DAD ISN'T DEAD AS FAR AS I KNOW???

hello! sorry this took me so long i went to answer you and then completely forgot to post it. also i may over/under explain things, idk how much of the series you know so sorry about that.

also this is really long, theres a tldr at the end if you want

basically in the books theyre mainly only mentioned through Snape's eyes (and snape is a racist terrorist who created torture spells - dont listen to snape stans they havent read the books) so the marauders are presented as "bullies" that used to hex people for fun.

ill admit, james potter (harrys dad) wasnt a great guy when he was younger and did take it out on snape a bit, but we're only really given the worst bits, and obviously snapes memory will have exaggerated it a bit.

the marauders were james potter, sirius black (harrys godfather), remus lupin (harrys 3rd year defence against the dark arts professor) and peter pettigrew (a traitor prick).

Voldemort (aka Tom Riddle) leads the Death Eaters, a terrorist group based around blood supremacy (hating wizards that have non-magical/muggle family members, especially parents, and arent 'pureblood' wizards), and the marauders and their friends joined the original Order of the Phoenix, lead by Dumbledore (hogwarts headmaster) against the death eaters in the first Wizarding War. Snape was a death eater, but later joined the Order as a spy for Dumbledore.

Regulus Black, Sirius' younger brother, gave up his life to help take down Voldemort, by stealing one of his horcruxes (an item that contained part of voldemorts soul, keeping him immortal) and as a fandom, we generally bloody love reg.

**this is where the spoilers start**

Peter Pettigrew, who was Wormtail in the Marauders due to his animagus (animal you can turn in to) being a rat, was part of the Order but also secretly was working as a Death Eater spy for Voldemort. As a fandom, we generally hate the bastard and wish he died sooner.

There was a prophecy made about Voldemorts death, that seemed like it was about James' son Harry. so James, Harry, and harrys mum Lily went into hiding to protect themselves.

(its worth mentioning that Lily was muggleborn - her parents werent magic - and snape had ended their 'friendship' while they were attending hogwarts by joining the death eaters, terrorising other muggleborns and then calling lily a slur. he claimed that he loved her and its supposed to be his turning point that he reveals he was secretly good bc he loved lily, but he didnt he was creepily obsessed with her. again, dont listen to the Snape stans)

lily and james made pettigrew their secret keeper, meaning peter was the only person who could tell people where they were, and peter told voldemort

voldy then came to their house, killed james and then asked lily to move out of his way (Snape had made him promise not to kill her, snape didnt give a fuck about james or harry though). lily didnt move, and sacrificed herself to protect her son. this act meant that when voldy tried to kill harry, the spell backfired, killing voldy instead of harry, and accidentally created another horcrux inside of harry. harry had a piece of voldemorts soul inside of him.

anyways harry goes to live with lily's sister and her family, and theyre incredibly abusive, and then the first book starts when harry is 11 and gets accepted into hogwarts, finding out that he's a wizard and all of the horrid shit that happened to his parents. snape hates him because harry looks exactly like james did and reminds him of lily.

tldr; we mainly see the marauders through the eyes of the terrorist group that they fought, so they look like 'bullies' but actually snape was a prick. the fandom is composed of people who know this, and most of the canon isnt relevant to us.

Also the story is so shite? like he has a mum and is part of a magical lineage but in a weird not John way? Like there's a good post about how two panels show the massive difference between the two. Also? How can u wright John Constantine without his mum dying as he was born? Like it affects sooo mutch. It's like rebooting Spiderman and not killing uncle Ben. It's the catalyst of all catalysts.

Also I'm not saying John ain't pretty when he's young, because he's decent looking in the first hellblazers, but he's scruffy there, also he's[yasstantine] a poser. Like John ain't a poser. Idk how to explain it but making John pretty and airbrushed and ticktoc alt is fundamentaly opposed to who the actual charecter is. Like they look at all the reasons ppl like him and changed them. John is a queer northern man who had dealt massively with childhood trauma and abuse as well as poverty, and stripping him of that is something I wish I could be surprised about DC doing but given how DC are already trying to downplay and flatten him

(don't get me started on the king shark thing or the flirting w batman. John may not have self respect but he does have a burning hatred for the rich and batman is not an exeption and the "oh John's such a slut he even fuked a shark" fuck off.) Ok speechless was a lie ^ pissed of queer and punk Londoner who has to many opinions on John Constantine and to many fights they want to pick with dc.

John is an inherently political charecter and that's where he is best. And you can't strip him of his context as a British punk queer man who lived through the aids crisis and Thatcher and the coalminers strikes and section 28. But DC want to strip him of his politics and so put him in America. No! John's story is important and speaks of things the government want to ignore. Issue 3 of hellblazers cover was taking the piss out of Thatcher. Hellblazer isent just a comic its a comic that calls out the bull going on in the world, and sits you down and forces you to empathize with people, and to show how bigots are pathetic. I read hellblazer and I can point to the things my parents have told me about, and more. Hellblazer is political, hellblazer is important and hellblazer tells me my history. Hellblazer is about people that I could know, and the horrors I have to face. Idk how to say it but hellbazer and John Constantine are so important to me in a world where most English language media is American. Where you learn all about America. And we have alot less media telling it how it is. England has a massive issue with putting old horrors under the rug.

And it's hard to explain to some people that didn't grow up with the horrors, or there parents didn't warn them if the horrors they lived thru, about the council estates, about section 28, about the privatisation of the verge, about all the British issues shoved under the bloody carpet. I read hellblazer and it tells me that these horrors do exist, the wounds that scar us still do exist, but people survive and people are good. [note- by horrors i mean the real life horrors, that are either played straight or allgorised]

Also from a story point of view, disregarding context, disregarding charecter, John's story is so fuking British. "The Americans want someone to succeed where they haven't, the English want someone to fail where they have," is a p good summary of the difference between the two countries media [i am heavily generalizing the common trends of american vs british media please dont @ me w outliers] We [brits] like watching someone else go through the shitter like us, to show that were not alone. We don't get happy ending. We know. We like morally complex arseholes who make bad choices. We don't want superman. We want our gritty hope that we may not be happy, but we can make choices that matter. We want to see people like us suffer and be absolved and be punished. We want the truth that is glossed over. We want to know that life sucks, and we take delight in watching other people go through the shit we do. Witch is why u need a British writer, not just because of knowledge of the context, but because the story is fundamentally different to American stories.

Thena sighed, sitting herself down on the staircase, just for a breath of air. This cold wasn't quite as bad as the last one, but that didn't mean it was easy. She wouldn't expect it to be, with her son--her sweet boy who became a menace with so much as a stuffy nose. At least the last dose of children's tylenol she got in him seemed to be taking effect. Perhaps if she got his fever down, she could sneak in a nap for herself.

"Mum, someone's at the door!"

Thena stood with a sigh, "Darling, don't shout. it will hurt your throat."

"Rough day?"

"Gil?" Thena blinked, although she instinctively stood back to let him in, which he took her up on instantly. She shut the door behind him, subconsciously running a hand over her hair. "What are you doing here?"

He was already taking his coat off, "well, Druig never misses school. I texted Ajak, and she said you had asked her about ear infections."

"So," Gil stood proudly with his hands on his hips, "how can I help?"

"Oh," Thena let out a faint laugh, shaking her head at him already, "no, Gil. It's sweet, but believe me, you want no part of this."

"I don't know about that," he said softly as he stepped in closer to her, "I'm here, aren't I?"

Yes, he was very...here. He was standing close, looking cute, and handsome, and he smelled nice while Thena was sure she smelled like sweat and cough syrup getting spat up onto her.

"Mum, can I have soup!"

Gil grinned at the look on Thena's face, which told him all he needed to know about how her day had gone. "How does a kid get even louder when he's not feeling well?"

"It's a talent," Thena murmured.

"What kind does he like?"

"There's a pile of the cans on the counter next to the stove," she pointed in the direction of the kitchen with a thankful smile on her face. She headed into the living room.

Druig sniffed back a continuously runny nose, playing with the plush triceratops in his lap. "Mum?"

"Mister Gil's here, Darling," she whispered, running a hand over his hair as she encouraged him to lie down. She smoothed the covers over him, "he heard you were sick and came over to check on us--y-you! Came to check on you."

Druig didn't catch Thena's bizarre correction of herself, or her nervous smile. He sniffled again, "is he gonna make some soup?"

"Yes, Love, he is," Thena promised, adjusting his blankets ont he sofa for him.

Druig drew his shoulders up in his fluffy robe and shrank his neck back, "m'cold."

Thena leaned forward, kissing his forehead. Indeed, his fever was down, but instead a cold sweat had replaced it. She sighed, "I'm sorry, baby."

Druig extended his arms, at which Thena wasted no time in pulling him up into her embrace. She sat herself where he had been lying, bundled up in pjs and his fluffy robe. She pulled the blankets up around herself, rubbing Druig's back.

"You know," she whispered to him, "there was a time when you were sick as just a little baby. I held you all night like this until morning because I was scared you'd get even sicker if I went to sleep."

Druig resettled himself against her shoulder, "did I?"

"Nope," she smiled, holding the back of his head and burying her nose in his mop of dark hair. "You didn't. And I still held you until you were all better."

Druig smiled at the happy ending to her little story. "Was Dad there?"

No, he most certainly was not. If he had been, then he was asleep in their bed, complaining about how much babies cried when they were sick. "I don't remember, Darling."

"Hm," Druig sighed against the softness of her sweater. "I don't 'member Dad ever bein' there when I was sick."

Thena just continued rubbing his back in gentle circles. Druig had so few memories of his father, which she couldn't decide if it was a good thing or a bad thing.

Druig pressed his face into his mother's shoulder, "s'always you there."

"That's right, Darling," Thena smiled as she pressed the cold tip of her nose into his cheek, making him giggle and squirm. "It will always be me, right here."

"Dinner is served!"

Druig went to the immense trouble of lifting his head, blinking slowly at Gil and the tray he had in his hands. "Misser Gil?"

"Hey buddy," Gil greeted in a soft voice, sitting down next to Thena and setting the tray down on his lap, "I heard you weren't feeling very good. Makkari sure did miss you in class today."

Druig plunked his head onto Thena's shoulder again, tired just from looking up, "I missed her too."

Thena grinned; she would have to text Ajak. They were keeping tally of all the adorable things their kids said about each other. Even if they didn't end up falling in love when they were older, it would still embarrass them to bits as teenagers.

"Well, I made some of that soup you like," Gil held up the tiny mug with handles on each side of it. "With a little something in it."

"What's that?" Druig frowned at the chunks of beige in his otherwise perfect minestrone.

"Just try it," Gil chuckled, handing the cup over and letting Thena help Druig hold it. "It's the perfect temperature, so just tip it back and drink it."

The rather ravenous little boy did just that, relatively unafraid of the foreign substance in his meal. He blinked at it as Thena helped him hold it level again. "Huh."

"Tastes like normal, right?" Gil smiled at the kid, who nodded. He looked up at Thena. "I saw you had a little soft tofu in the fridge."

"Mum puts it in her smoothies for gotein."

"Protein, Darling," Thena mumbled, feeling oddly embarrassed for some reason.

"Not a bad idea," Gil chuckled. "When I was sick as a kid, I'd get soup with tofu and ginger and kimchi in it, because it's good for your tummy."

"What's kimchi?"

"It's probably a little spicy for you right now, but the rest is good for helping you feel better when you're sick," Gil promised. He picked up a bowl of it, holding out a spoon. "And you."

"Me?" Thena blinked, glancing at Gil between helping Druig take sips of soup, hoping to avoid it getting all over him. She smiled, "it's okay Gil, I'm-"

"Druig, did Mum have a gotein smoothie today?"

Druig shook his head with the cup still held up to his mouth, blocking his face entirely. Thena took it away before he could tip it back too far. Druig licked his lips, "I didn't hear the blender."

Gil gave Thena a look. "I bet you've been telling him all day that he has to eat something so he can get better."

Thena's jaw dropped a little at the - teasing - accusation of hypocrisy in her. She gave him a playful glare, "that is not the same thing. And I'll have you know I had half a cheese toastie earlier."

Gil shook his head, leaning closer with the soup, "half his unfinished sandwich does not count, Thena, and you know it."

Thena sighed, looking between the outstretched bowl and Gil's hopeful little grin. She resigned herself, closing her eyes and nodding.

Gil dragged the spoon through the bowl, catching some tofu and some diced veggies. He held it up over the bowl, "open wide."

Thena glared at him for the little display. She leaned forward to accept the bite, blushing a little (for some reason). She gulped it down, and she had to admit, Gil had managed to make the simple canned tomato broth shine. "There."

Gil nodded down to the tray, "Druig finished his."

Thena huffed at Gil, who was unfazed. She looked down at Druig, who was settling in against her shoulder again.

"I'm done," he declared as his fatigue started to take over him.

Thena sighed, rubbing his back to help him drop off to sleep properly. She looked at Gil again, whispering, "fine."

Gil pulled the bowl back from her reaching hand. "Ah!--you have your hands full."

Thena looked at Druig in her arms and then at the man next to her. She had been married once, and yet she could not think of anything more disgustingly personal - borderline intimate - than him feeding her soup while she held her sleeping child. "No."

"Come on, Thena," Gil argued, both of them still whispering, keeping in mind the boy dozing against her side. "You know very well you're gonna get his cold. Just eat something so you'll be a little stronger for it?"

She wilted. He had a point. She couldn't afford the time to let herself be sick. She could barely spare the time to stay home with Druig while he was being a little terror.

Gil inched the bowl forward again. "I'm not leaving unless this bowl is empty."

Thena sighed. She rubbed Druig's back, feeling his little breaths against her cheek. She rolled her eyes, making sure Gil could see her doing it.

He chuckled, fully accepting her scorn as he held out another bite for her. "I'll make you some real sundubu jjigae some time. I can even make a mild version for Druig."

Thena smiled, licking her lips after another soothing bite. The tofu really did slide down easy and make the soup seem wonderfully filling. "I bet he'd love it. The boy eats like I never feed him anything."

Gil snorted. He had seen Druig eat - devour - his lunch at school; he knew. "We can learn to make it together when he's feeling better. It'll be fun."

"That does sound lovely," Thena smiled, leaning her head against Druig's between bites.

Gil caught that telltale drooping of her eyelids. She wasn't very good at hiding when she was fading; he remembered that from Christmas. "Hey."

Thena looked at him at the call for her attention, but he set the bowl and tray on the floor in front of him, shuffling closer. Maybe it was the cozy atmosphere, or her reluctance to wake Druig. But she let him take up the spot directly next to her, their thighs pressing together as he wrapped an arm around her.

"You're doing great," Gil whispered, his breath rustling a stray hair or two on her head. "But you need to rest, too."

"I'm," Thena paused, unable to cover her yawn, "fine."

"Hm," Gil nodded, playing along as he had before. It was another thing she seemed to have passed on to Druig; they both could fall asleep nearly on the spot when they were tired.

"Sorry," Thena murmured, aware she was leaning on him but unable to do anything about it.

Gil pressed a light kiss to the top of her hair, "c'mere."

Gil leaned back into the opposite corner of the couch, propped up against a spare pillow for Druig. He stretched his legs out, encouraging Thena's to do the same, laid over top of his. With her stretched out, Druig naturally followed suit, snuggled into his mother's protective embrace.

It was an adorable little tower, they made.

Gil pulled the blankets up over the little family. He knew Thena would be horrified when she discovered that he had let them fall asleep on him. But his only goal was to get them both a little rest, and if he was the bed on which that happened, then so be it.

Why was the sweet bride's mother one of the worst people you've ever met? (Love a good storytime!)

okay! this is going to be long i’m sorry in advance! so the bride (stunning, ethereal, heavenly personality just a gift to earth tbh) is disabled, i’m unsure of details of her disability as i didn’t ask but she has a specialised wheelchair, one that she controls with a little joystick and it was made clear throughout the time i spend there that she had very limited mobility and is bound to said wheelchair. anyway, the bridesmaids had helped her into her dress before me and the hairdresser arrived so that she wouldn’t mess her hair or makeup off pulling it over her head (stunning dress btw 10/10) so she was already “ready” when i got there, her hair was in the process of being done as i pulled up.

when i got there at first her mum was like hi hello thank u a few mua’s turned this down (i had to go to her home which was an hour drive, but ofc it was adapted for the bride so she felt more comfortable getting ready there) and i was like oh no i don’t mind the drive! got a starby on my way here i’m having a great day, yknow being nice, then her mum says “not because of where we are, but because she’s a cripple” now i’m uncomfortable, brides mum who i’ll called S notices. S says “you did know she was a spaz, right?” (yep actual wording) and i say “i’ve been here before to do her makeup trial this isn’t my first time meeting her she’s a lovely woman but pls don’t say those words they make me uncomfortable” (bride couldn’t hear me she was in the process of blow drying but still i had to say SOMETHING yknow) S says “oh she doesn’t mind! it’s how she deals with her disability through humour” now i’m like ...okay? hairdresser wraps up, i start my job

the whole time S was making comments about what i was doing “oh i didn’t know you’d use that much foundation” “aren’t those eyelashes going to be too long?” “why is her face wet looking?” (setting spray) “___ you look like a clown!” so i respectfully asked her to leave and wait to see the finished look, the bride was getting upset and when S did leave the room the bride apologised for her behaviour, i said darling there’s nothing you need to apologise for at all, S then comes storming back in “why didn’t you tell me you had a makeup trial btw i should’ve been here what the the mua was a psychopath who killed you what would’ve you done then?!” she was just very... i can’t explain it. she was an asshole through and through, picked apart every single thing i did and took every opportunity to call her daughter an offensive term and remind her that she’s disabled. “i hope T knows what he’s got himself in for marrying a handicap!” was the last straw for me, but ofc it was the brides day didn’t want to cause a scene but had to set boundaries so i kicked her out the room again, told her to wait (she was equally as rude and overbearing with the hairdresser too)

when i finished the bride looked AMAZING like for real, she was so happy she’d never had her makeup done professionally before because counters aren’t adaptable and a lot of muas have refused her cause of the height of her wheelchair (i was bending down a lot and yes my back hurt after from being bent over but so what??? that’s two hours of my friday, compared to the biggest day of her life. my back will be fine it’s more than worth it idk why other muas would turn her down it’s so sad) anyway cut to S, she finally said: “oh ____ you look lovely! Laura do you have time to do my eye makeup please i’ll pay you” LOL NO I DONT BYE

when the bride called me after her ceremony it was to apologise again to which i said trust me you don’t have to excuse someone else’s behaviour you shouldn’t be worried about that today of all days! and she said to me “thank you for not refusing me, for once in my life i feel like a normal girl” and yeah lol i balled my eyes out after that call. i can’t even imagine what she has to go through on a daily basis, not just from society but her own mother too. it was clear her mum was upsetting her and i just think like come onnnn, that’s your daughter, on her wedding day, hell on ANY DAY don’t bring her down what the fuck. sorry for the ramble but the short of it is her mother was a cunt.

hi anonstie!!!! thank u for the compliments <3 but please dont beat yourself up and say you're 'not as profound as everyone else', that's so unfair and also not true! one thing i love about my writing style is that it's very pretentious. it's the kind of style a hater would read and go 'what the fuck is she even saying'. and the fun of it is, even when im writing very specific metaphors, i tend to be so hand-wavey with my writing that you can interpret it any way you like! in fact, i actually think that's why so many people appeal to my writing, because i cover topics that a lot of people can relate to but i do it in a way that encompasses niche sub-experiences without actually getting into them, if that makes sense? idk i think it's v neat for something i dont actually do on purpose most of the time.

so the line you're on about is 'he would be picking his home from his fingernails all his life'. MY interpretation of that comes from a very personal habit, which just further solidifies what i said before about no single interpretation being the 'correct' interpretation, because otherwise id be expecting every single reader to just Know about a habit of mine, and that would be a bit weird lol. so this thing i do a lot for no particular reason is like... flick my nails? it's hard to explain but for example ill put my thumbnail under the nail of my middle finger on the same hand and just? flick it up? and it's basically the same mannerism as what a lot of people do when getting dirt out from under their nails but for me i just do it bc i find it satisfying. like my mum gets SO annoyed about it lmao. and so i was doing this one day and i got on a weird train of thought about how even though im constantly doing this, i still always manage to have dirt under my nails, and that's just very human i think. like it's a very subtle but universal truth of being alive that your body, in all its tiny ways, will show proof of that life. having dirt under your nails isn't fatal or dangerous or even incredibly bothersome, it's just a bit annoying and is a permanent upkeep we will ALWAYS have to do.

so yeah, for me, this line is zuko acknowledging that, even though he's healing, even in a future where he's entirely healed, he'll still hold tiny signs of his upbringing. he'll never entirely be washed clean of it. but in a very quiet, inexplicable way, that's also a little comforting, because it just shows he's human enough to be troubled by it.

however i also had people in the comments telling me what that line meant to THEM, and they are just as right in their interpretations as i am. im truly someone who believes in readers each having their own take on lines. there's no 'wrong' interpretation. go with whatever YOU think it means.

i need to get my shit together and adopt a cool and aloof persona where i just speak russian as a ukrainian online and don't feel bad about it. like bad bitch vitaliy kim who keeps running an official ukrainian government telegram channel without avoiding/deleting russian texts he sends

it's really something to need a validation figure for something as stupid as this but here we are i guess. last week had to console my mum because a grown-ass woman was mean to her about it online, only to get sad about it myself today.

it's such an easy target to have on your forehead - today I didn't even speak russian, the exchange was in english, but my transliteration had 1 mistake in it (because of some frankly stupid choices ukraine implemented in 2007-2010 that result in VERY ugly -"ий" transliterations). and the other user decided this meant i was a filthy russophile traitor who did it on purpose to spite ukraine. there are ways to correct people that are in good faith, theirs was not.

physically it caused a, like, panic response, heart pounding feeling like i needed to "absolve" myself in their eyes, defend my worth, prove that i'm still ukrainian - specifically, prove that I speak ukrainian good enough to be ukrainian (i am decently fluent, but it's just not my #1 native language, that's not something I can change). i couldn't even think of anything to say, i just told them that it's hurtful for me that they assumed I was being malicious.

this is a recurring interaction forum so I'm pretty sure they'll just treat me with suspicion forever. what do they want, my birth certificate? my lack of any ties to russia? a manifesto? i said nothing to them to start this, this is all based JUST on the fact that ukrainian is not my #1 first language and it shows sometimes.

if it were just this one user, it'd be whatever, but it's not - i've seen this sentiment in so many places, even down to mocking русский language when that language is not just a российский language but the language of, idk, your neighbours downstairs? your friend's family (even if that friend speaks ukrainian with you)? a huge percentage of people who live east of the dnieper/dnipro river? i dont know. it hurts to see it over and over again and it hurts even more to see my mum get hopelessly sad about this thing she also cannot change in herself.

personally with saltburn i don’t think oliver had a true motive other than power, felix and his family are obviously very affluent but not only that but they are well liked (at least on a surface level) and i’m not sure if others can relate but in the beginning when you see oliver in his lectures with farleigh despite doing the work there’s a clear favouritism between the professor and farleigh and that is something i can relate to when in school if you work hard but aren’t as good at forming connections or are quieter teachers can prefer students who don’t work as hard and that does build resentment to people oliver clearly is very callous but we don’t know that at the beginning we are lied to just as felix is when we find out felix adopts people he sees as less than him every summer we start to dislike him. but then we find out oliver’s true nature and felix using working class people to boost his ego is nothing in comparison to that. but rich people and those close to them think they are untouchable and oliver brings them down one by one he disrupts their security from within their own home a vast estate which is far away from the problems those who are rich don’t even think of. i think oliver wanted what felix had which is being carefree around money, being able to treat people like they are unimportant and them still wanting to be around him basically being able to do what he wanted and oliver being someone clearly not in his right mind went to extreme lengths. at the end of the movie he’s looking at the toy that’s of the cattons they are dancing as puppets in front of him as he roams the house completely naked. this is so long i’m sorry if it doesn’t make sense also i understand if you don’t read all this!

Aw nah I read all of it and I get what you're saying as well, it's an interesting take.

I relate to that too at the beginning, but more on the level of like you can work as hard as you want and be as personable as you like but if you don't have connections and money in worlds like Oxford/Cambridge/St Andrews (the unis all the elite go to basically) then your intelligence and stuff doesn't mean that much. If your lectures went to uni with your classmates parents and regularly rub shoulders with them then you're not going to get the same leg ups and treatments.

The power thing definitely comes into it too, at first I was super confused about how Oliver seemed to keep switching between a very meek and submissive personality, playing at being awkward and shy, and then all of a sudden making out like he was Daddy with the sister and Farleigh, and tbh I think it was supposed to be jarring but also not directed wonderfully because it happened so awkwardly?

I genuinely think the whole things meant to be viewed as satire and total fantasy tbh, like Oliver isn't supposed to have much depth to him because he's just the representation of like the monster under the bed that the elites in the 21st century fear.

Something my friend pointed out too is that there's running theme of him being a parasite who wants to consume them all too... Like he sooks up Felix's bathwater, says the whole "I'm a vampire" thing to the sister, the way he kills the mum in the end too by cutting off her oxygen it's all very symbolic of that. So I think he really is supposed to be this garish rich persons worst nightmare. I dont know how much I think he even wants power, I think it mostly comes from a place of hatefulness and 0 respect? Like he low-key dances naked on their grave at the end naked dancing in front of the stones with their names on.

Like idk about you but I thought Felix was the perfect read on arsehole poshboy at school, that bit where Oliver gives him the bike and he's like "oh wow yah that's soh khaind" there's something about him that immediately rubs me up the wrong day because he doesn't see Oli or even notice people like that until they serve him in some way, we see him treat that girl as disposable too. When Oli says "I was just being what you wanted me to be" that's so what being in those sort of rich people's lives is like. And I suppose it's probably trying to ask us what's worse, to be like Felix and his family (who see no value in others other than to serve as their props) or to be like Oli (who sees no value in felix and his family other than to serve as leverage)

Like ultimately Oli and felix's family are all guilty of the same things - lying to people (Oli who obvs lies about so so much) (Felix in that he uses Oli and other poor people to lie to himself about how generous he is and like how charitable he is when really he just wants a pet) (the rest of the family who seem to lie to everyone by putting on this pretence of being lovely and accommodating, but are actually deeply judgemental and quite selfish/paranoid about being generous)

Like we see Olis disregard for human life in the way he kills them all, but we see felix's family also show disregard for human life too when their friend dies and the mother says "she'll do anything for attention" especially because you could argue their friend wouldn't have died if they hadn't pushed her out of the house for fear she was leaching off their hospitality.

The more I think about it I think that actually all Oliver's sins are mirrored by Felix and his family, lying, 0 respect for human life, leaching off others (because felix and his family leach off Oliver's trauma and like Rosamund's character is telling all her friends deeply personal traumatic shit about Oliver for her own social gain to show everyone how generous she is) like I wonder if in a way the point of the film is to make us question why we forgive Felix and his family for their evil but are disgusted by Oliver's. It's actually something Rosamund is constantly dropping too when she talks of her aversion to ugly people, she says about how "you wouldn't think it because she's such a riot to look at but..." as if like beautiful and stylish people can't be bad... Like I think wealth allows people to distance themselves from their moral ugliness in a ways that poverty prevents poor people from doing? There's probably a lot of academic research into this as a social trend but as I have read no deeper than Chavs by Owen Jones I am unfortunately unable to site anything other than when he talks about how we allow rich posh people to swear and say offensive things because they do it in a camp/quaint way, but we don't forgive working class celebrities for saying fuck or being racist (I don't think we should forgive racism btw it's just we forgive it in rich people more often than we do in poor people)

I'm also sorry this was so long, honestly I watched it not expecting to have this many thoughts but its actually really interesting to think about

hi maman, i hope you are well! i just came back from france a while ago and i've been having some grown up™ thoughts. i'm 20, and graduating in a year. i wish i had more time, but i need to get on with my life very soon.

until i can pursue my real goal in 2025 (that's when an exam i need to take for a certain career opens up), i have to find something to do in the meantime: work for an international company as a climate analyst in the EU, or go to grad school... again, in the EU. i specify this because that's what all my french is for––leaving the states. i don't even know WHERE yet, belgium felt miserable with all the dutch and i didnt actually LOVE the parts of france i did see (which means maybe i would like normandy, or far south with all that water, but so far idk!)

i hadn't even been abroad before, and i learned how lonely it was. but coming home was lonely too, and i realized that i have to start a new life no matter what in a year's time when i have to move out of this house, and i dont know where to go looking for my next step. i'm scared because i have no confidants, and these are realizations ive come to in the past like... two months.

i like reading your asks because you have so much insight, so... if you have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

I hope I'm on time for this one but my advice is to start working. Not only because it seems to me that a routine would be a relief at the moment (you will spend most of your life working: learning how it works, how to navigate colleagues, bosses, micro-management, a life/work balance, etc., is immensely useful) but also because professional experience can be more valuable than degrees, especially if you get a network out of it (most job offers never make it to the public, everyone hires from the inside).

2025 is far away, and then you still need to take the exam and get hired. You have all the time in the world to research francophone countries, take a Monday off and spend three days exploring new cities here and there, learn about new cultures. The reality is that adulthood is often lonely and I hear grown people regularly complain that they don't have friends and that it's harder to make new ones after you graduate.

Listen to your gut and think. Ask yourself why you didn't like those places, what was wrong - if something was actually wrong, or if you just felt like crap and associated it with your environment. I am of the opinion that friends will find their way to us if we frequent the right places, so there's always hope for a better life if you take a risk, but if you stay behind because you're scared, there will be nothing but regret.
