“colorless desire” is such an interesting and evocative phrase.

We don’t think of desire in those terms,. do we? We think of desire as hot, as red, as chasing, but it can be other things too. It can be a forest. It can be cool, and measured. But I never would think of it as colorless. This is, of course, referring to Maya, and her desire for the stage. It is desire for desire’s sake. One of the best things about this revue is in the way it will, in just a little bit, cut Maya and her whole thing down to the quick, but this is the first criticism of her we really see on the stage.

She desires to go better and higher in the stage because like so many things with Maya, it is the next step (or so she thinks--more on that later). She chases the next step with a formless and colorless drive, with no goal beyond to be the next greatest. ANd maybe that’s what the black tragedy is, is that Maya has immense skill and drive, but at core, what is there? Maya herself feels, maybe even worries, that there’s nothing else there. Is the tragedy that someone can be so good, with so little feeling behind it?
