Elvis Presley (with Scotty Moore and Bill Black), made his Las Vegas debut, opening for the Freddie Martin Orchestra and comedian Shecky Greene at the New Frontier Hotel.
Although he had become a teen sensation by this time, Elvis was not the typical Vegas Strip entertainer of the period and the audience reception was cool-to-indifferent. The contract was torn up after one week of what was supposed to be a two-week engagement. The experience was not a total loss, however. While there, Presley witnessed Freddie Bell and the Bellboys doing a raucous version of Big Mama Thorntonâs blues hit âHound Dog,â and he soon worked that song into his live act. Presley wouldnât play Las Vegas again for almost 13 years.
With opening acts: Sheeky Greene and Freddy Martin and his orchestra backing him; Elvis performed at the Las Vegas, NV New Frontier Hotel (2 shows daily) at 8.00 p.m. and midnight. Liberace. attended and did a publicity meet.
Later Elvis recalled: â after the first night I went outside and just walked around in the dark. It was awful. I wasnât getting across to the audience.â
