How does troll reproduction work exactly?

Cuz I'm genuinely curious. I dont think anyone on the series production team has said anything and so far I've seen absolutely no one touch on this subject but as someone who's always had an interest in the habits of creatures (both fictional or otherwise), I kinda sorta maybe NEED to know this otherwise I'll never be able to sleep peacefully again

But anywho. Let's dive in

So trolls come from eggs. This is basic knowledge. First instance of this phenomenon (as far as I know, I've only seen the movies) is from World Tour.

Egg pops out of Guy Diamond's hair, egg hatches and BOOM, (literal) baby. Now I understand that this whole sequence was probably just a gag and a way for DreamWorks to implement another (merchandisable) addition to the cast HOWEVER this sequence also raises a few questions

First off, as far as I know Guy Diamond has no partner (again: I haven't watched any of the spinoff shows). Either that or maybe the other troll was a sorta one-night-stand/no-longer-in-his-life kinda situation? Which is great either way cuz its shown he obviously cares for his son and we at Tumblr appreciate a loving single father no matter the circumstances, but if my former theory is correct than that would imply that trolls are capable of reproducing asexually. Like onions.

Now if that hypothesis is, as they call it, "cap" then that would mean that some sorta hanky panky has to go down before an egg comes into question. And if that's the case, does this mean that male trolls are traditionally the ones who carry the eggs?

But that can't be right, can it? Afterall, World Tour gave us yet ANOTHER egg scene later on in the movie

In Cooper's flashback, we clearly see Queen Essence being the one carrying the eggs meanwhile King Quincy is eggless. Now, as far as i see it, this could be explained either one of four ways:

1) Quincy was the one who actually produced the eggs and Essence is merely holding them for her husband (since her hair seems more fitting to be a makeshift nest compared to Quincy's)

2) Female trolls are the ones who produce the eggs. Guy Diamond is just a trans icon

3) Troll reproduction differs from genre to genre

4) There is a... *sighs* a/b/o type of dynamic among troll kind where certain trolls are capable of giving birth/siring children depending on a secondary gender

In regards to theory #3, this could also explain why Guy Diamond seems to reproduce and hatch an egg in such a short amount of time (like 5 seconds I'm pretty sure) as opposed to Queen Essence/King Quincy who's eggs presumably went a while longer before actually hatching.

Actually, speaking off eggs, are trolls the only species in their world that reproduce that way?

Because now that Band Together has officially been released, we now know for certain that it's possible for different species to crossbreed. Biggest example? Resident DILF Bruce and his giant muppet wife

I was incredibly clear in that post of why I am going to keep an eye on Threads, despite the concerns: Twitter was a valuable source of live news, especially during natural disasters, and Threads is the first potentially viable replacement for that. IDK if you actually follow me, but if you do you'll know I do a lot of work around natural disaster communication. Twitter was invaluable as a communication source during natural disasters. Full stop. It is not up for debate. But hey, if you want a source with more authority than a random tumblr blog, here, have a nice shiny research paper:

Mind you, that was written in 2010 and the importance of Twitter as a communications tool during natural disasters has only increased since then. There is no other tool out there, no other website--news or otherwise, that can provide such granular, specific updates when shit hits the fan as Twitter did. The only better, quicker source of information I have found during natural disasters is listening to actual radio chatter from the departments involved in whatever problem, and that can be very tricky to do if you don't know where to look or have the right equipment. There is no other site where I can go specifically follow so many of my local fire departments, my local emergency services, my local National Weather System stations, and get live pushed updates from them every single time they post.

When Twitter DDOSed itself last week and put a limit on the amount of tweets people could view and forced people to be logged in to view anything at all, the effect was immediate and BAD. People suddenly couldn't view things like missing person alerts, or weather alerts. I had people messaging me because they were trying to check the National Weather System autoalerts for their area on Twitter due to being caught in a sudden storm, but they couldn't get on to check.

Love it or hate it, Twitter had an immense amount of value and it got that value--at least in the case of natural disaster communication--because the stubborn ass government decided it was big enough to be trusted with official lines of information. Very, very few other social media sites have ever had that trust from the government. Look at how they banned TikTok on all government devices. But they DO trust Facebook, and Instagram, and Meta. Which means their chances of trusting Threads and migrating over there when Twitter finally takes its last breath are ASTRONOMICALLY higher than expecting them to go anywhere else.

We can debate the privacy and moral issues of the Metaverse and those involved until the cows come home, but it does not change the fact that if my mountain is on fire I'm gonna get information about where that fire is from wherever the fuck I can. I'm not going to wait around for it to maybe show up in a "live" updates news article from CNN from some reporter half a continent away in New York who doesn't know anything about where I live and gets the roads wrong because they just don't know. I'm going to go to the website full of my neighbors and local firefighters and see what's happening right that second.

Do we need to fix the privacy and moral issues? Yes. But we can't throw the baby out with the bathwater either. Not using Threads or any other Meta product isn't the answer here. Using them with extreme caution and only for very specific needs, for the time being, is. Long term, we need to be focusing on privacy based legislation that would finally put these companies in their place. But until then, again, I'm going to keep following my local fire departments wherever they go.

I was wondering if you ever watch clints reptiles - he just posted a video about marcupeal phylogeny and specifically mentioned thylacines, and talked about how theres been sightings in new guinea? i was just wondering about your opinion, since you just posted a new thylacine drawing and i know youre very interested in them :D

idk, the fact i haven't heard all that much buzz about this theory from the zoologists i follow on twitter makes me doubtful by default.

i'll be honest i'm pretty skeptical of this new guinea claim because of dingoes and new guinea singing dogs.

the popularly accepted theory for the mainland extinction of the thylacine and likely tasmanian devil was competing pressure from dingoes.

clint mentions all of this, but he leaves out the fact that dingoes arrived on the australian continent from the north and studies indicate that dingoes may be descendants of more basal new guinea singing dogs. that would likely mean imo that the new guinea thylacine population, if anything, would be the first to suffer the consequences of canine encroachment.

only on the island of tasmania where absolutely no dingoes were ever present sheltered a 100% verifiable thylacine population by the time of european colonization. to my knowledge, the most recent solid physical evidence of thylacines in new guinea is still several thousand years old. so to me it seems that dingo/wild dog distribution and thylacine distribution mixed as well as oil and water. If there's thylacines in new guinea, it would have to be some enclave free of dogs.

i know the topography of new guinea can give refuge to very cryptic animals, and as clint said the relatively low human population and no european persecution is a plus. i won't disocount local indigenous anecdotes because they've been proven right with other species once thought extinct, but like where are skins or bones or footprints?

also i feel like clint really really oversimplified the cloning process thylacines would require. he makes it seem like it would be simple because we have their whole genome sequenced and have specimens under 100 years old to work with. the thing is, cloning a mammoth is simpler than cloning a thylacine even though they went extinct millenia ago, because mammoths still have a close living relative.

a cursory look at google tells me wooly mammoths and extant asian elephants last shared an ancestor as recently as 6 million years ago, they both belong to the family elephantidae. thylacines however were the last living member of their own family, thylacinidae, which diverged somewhere around 25mya from the other dasyuromorphs. scientists don't really have a close living relative to work with. clint says the complete genome means we wouldn't have to "stick frog DNA in there" to complete it, but the thing is with cloning you have to start with a frog/living DNA sample to tweak it into a thylacine!! until we can 3D print an organism out of thin air with proteins and acids, there has to be a template sample of living cells whose nuclei we can tamper with. and the less related they are, the more DNA has to be overhauled

if you wanna learn exactly how much of a logistical nightmare it's gonna be to clone a thylacine, this lecture explains it way better:

the takeaway analogy is that cloning a thylacine is the CRISPR equivalent of doing a puzzle of a clear blue sky, not having the box to look at for any reference, and about half the pieces are doubles of other pieces (because most DNA is junk code that does nothing). it's like next to impossible and i still have more faith in de-extinction than a rediscovery.

so yeah, i guess i'm a bit of a thylacine doomer. but i do want to believe, just temper your expectations. to me a win would be a single engineered thylacine cell by the centennial of their extinction lol.

So due to certain behaviour I am inclined to believe that yes, by 2016 they had gone all the way. Maybe late 2015 (thus my theory for why 8/11/15 is important) or early 2016. You've probably got a thousand things to say about the latest "The Kiss" info, but I have been thinking about it all morning, especially about the way there seems to be no need to acknowledge it between the two of them. They just went for it, and then they didn't feel the need to talk about it. Idk about everyone else but to me that just feels like to them, this was just a kiss among perhaps many. They knew the song and dance around it already, so there was no need to mark it as different other than it being in characters rather than out of.

But those are just my thoughts. So excited to hear about yours if you have any :3

Hi there! Oh, yes…yes, I do have so many thoughts about Michael talking about the kiss, and The Assembly in general.

Something I'm not sure I've mentioned on here (at least not in a long time) is that five years ago (in June of 2019), I wrote a thread on Twitter about fanfic and why it was so important to me as an autistic woman, as well as the role it played when I began to discover my sexuality. I received a lovely comment from Neil, and on top of that, Michael reposted it from me, which was entirely unexpected but delightful.

So when I first heard about The Assembly, I was anxious, apprehensive, and uncomfortable--mainly because of how the autistic/ND interviewers would potentially be depicted on screen. By the end of the show, however, I was in tears--and for once, in a good way. Michael did not let me down for one single second (which I did not think he would), and I loved how he and everyone else just held space for each other during the group singalong to "Here Comes the Sun."

(The only thing I haven't liked is seeing some of the response on social media that suggests Michael did an extraordinary thing just by talking to autistic/disabled people like we are human beings. It shouldn't be special when he or anyone else does that, but it's depicted that way because it is unfortunately still so rare...)

In terms of Michael talking about the kiss with David, it was of course so lovely to see his expressions and listen to him talk about what it was like. For me it was the fact that he actually didn't say that much that was so revealing. It was perfectly in line with what was reported about what Michael said a month ago, about it being "everything you dream of." With the Assembly, we could now see and hear him talking about it and that same carefulness with which he gave the previous answer--a carefulness borne not out of wanting to hide something, but wanting to keep something about the kiss private. Just for him and David.

I also feel like some folks might have misunderstood what he meant when he said, "We never talk about it," though. I think the unspoken part after that is, "We never talk about it, not because we don't want to, but because we don't need to"...

And I agree with you that it was exactly that--one kiss out of many, something so tried and true that neither David nor Michael had to give it much thought. It also makes me think of previous discussions about comments from David about how, between the sunglasses and the contact lenses for Crowley, he couldn't see shit, yet he only needed one take to find Michael's lips. It's like needing a GPS when you drive someplace new, but then it quickly becomes familiar, and after a while you don't need anyone to tell you how to get there. Because you already know the way home.

Talking about the kiss like this almost gives a feeling of domesticity, of something deeply intimate, beyond the physical. I'm thinking of it as well in tandem with David's comments from prior to the BAFTAs, about it being "another day at work" and saying that Michael had "brushed his teeth." There are so many examples from movies or TV shows where a couple wakes up in bed together in the morning and when one person goes in for a kiss, the other stops them and says "Not until you've brushed your teeth" (or something to that effect). And it just makes me picture them getting up to film that day and sharing a good morning kiss, after which David gently reminds Michael to brush his teeth before he gets to the set. (And he does, because Michael never forgets anything David tells him.)

The last thing that I wanted to mention that stood out to me was Michael talking about how moved everyone was--both the people who watched the kiss be filmed on set, and the fans who watched it in the show. You could actually hear the way his voice caught in his throat, hear him become emotional just from remembering that. And it made me think back to when GO 2 came out last summer, in the midst of the Writers Strike (and then SAG-AFTRA) and how Michael was probably reading all of the fan reactions online and feeling very much the same way, even though he couldn't say anything about it.

So it becomes even more poignant and compelling that now, when he finally can say anything he wants at all about the kiss, he gives us so little. Or maybe just enough, with a small, knowing smile on his face. Because he's found a boy he likes, and he has his photo.

Those are my thoughts on Michael talking about the kiss on The Assembly. I know it's been a week now, but hopefully everyone has had time to process it too, so I'd love to hear what you all think. Thank you for writing in! x

there was no usability research done for this, at least from what i can see

like absolutely no interest checks were done at all or else I feel like they would have realized this is not feasible or at least the way they did it wasn't

none of the paterons mods knew, barely any fans knew (also there was a leak which makes a little worried for their website security)

what i think they needed was some user research before they did the launch. because all the feedback, the critism, the hate (yes even the hate) is the kinda of feedback that would SHOULD have been given BEFORE. during the production stages not NOW after the launch. it would have made everything a lot smoother for them

(by feedback i mean things like: users are interested in different tiers, users are think the price doesn't justify how much product they're getting with the service, users are confused due to misinformation, etc.)

and like testing and interest checks stuff like this would have been essential to make this launch have a better reaction from the fan base

more UX stuff below the cut but

TL:DR Watcher hire a UX designer please this would have solved all your problems OR JUST DO SOME USER TESTING NEXT TIME JESUS

my biggest thing is there's a lot of companies (big and small) that tend to make these types of big changes (whether it's to better their product, bring in more people, appeal to a new demographic, whatever their goal may be) but in the process they forget their core userbase (in this case Watcher's current audience) which are arguably the most important group to factor in company decisions bc they're the ones that are going to stay long term

idk if I'm making any sense but i hate seeing this trend of what's basically just picking up other companies "trending feature" (for example tiktok becoming popular and all other platforms adopting short form video content, Instagram/Snapchat stories becoming popular and other social media like WhatsApp and Twitter tried it too) only for the feature that originally made them appeally in the first place to fall to the wayside

and the ones who jumped on the trend aren't guaranteed to stay, and now you've lost your loyal userbase

and even tho Watcher didn't do exactly that it still kinda feels like they did u know? I'm certain (and hopeful) this will work out but the execution was just absolutely not it at all, and i wish there was more research done because it helped so much and they wouldn't be bombarded the way they were now

i get it this was something that may have been a long time coming but it is clear that it wasn't ready, both the product and your userbase. also the method of dropping was also absolutely not it

I looked at recent endOTWracism stuff linked from previous asks and the main thing they seem mad about is ao3 not hiring a diversity consultant yet? Which seems like a lit of pressure for one person when really broad sensitivity training for the abuse team seems more effective? Also, they kept referring and talking around what they're actually mad about you for. I had to go through 4 diff twitter threads linked within each other to find something about a 16k racist screed? But they don't actually link or name the fic that i saw, so it could be anything from a racist manifesto to idk, bts fanfic?

They just seem really caught up in their own righteousness, to the point of being naive.

It's an old rant post from 2016 that's pretty badly written, but you can go read it if you want.

I haven't volunteered with OTW since 2014, and while I did set a few policies (like ignoring duplicate reports of the same work to lighten the burden on the Abuse team), I really don't think I'm terribly relevant anymore to the standard organizational dysfunction that has been all through all parts of OTW since the beginning.

I don't know how many people are on the Abuse team now. In my day, we had maybe 3 active people at a time. I'll bet they're equivalently understaffed now.

Sensitivity training won't do shit if they're operating at way more than maximum capacity at all times. That kind of situation is exactly why so many nonprofits have the type of dysfunction OTW does.

So I found some Rawfury videos of Yuri Lowenthal, Krizia Bajos and Cissy Jones talking about their characters and talking about the game before it was released (I was looking for clips for OC voice claims) and there was something in Cissy's Vivian video that kinda stuck out to me.

So what she says about Vivian exactly is: "Arcadia to her is- its not only where she's built her career, its where she's building her legacy, and uh, for her this is something really important. She wants to leave something of value, something that's worth a lot to people-"

Now, from a non spoiler point of view this is like, oh yeah rich Ceo lady wants to leave a mark on the world. Ceos are always talking about legacy, wanting to leave something behind, be something great yadda yadda. Added bonus if you know that she's supposed to be Elijah's '''Granddaughter''', she wants to continue her family's legacy all checks out.

But, knowing who she really is, not Elijah's granddaughter but one of the Arcadia 6, makes this sentence a lot more interesting. You could see this as her wanting to remake her legacy, because she technically already had one. Emily Garland is one of the 6 Arcadian born citizens to escape the dome, that's something pretty cool to be known for. But she threw that away, she sold out and chose to support the very company that oppressed her and many others like her. So now she has to make something more of herself to justify that choice. If she can make Arcadia greater, bring it out of its current slump like Howard Ashman did for Disney, then she's no longer the escapee who sold out because she was too weak to handle the outside world, she's the amazing woman who made American Arcadia popular again!

Cissy goes on to say: "-and so she works really really hard to make this thing, um, the best it can be with the most interesting people-" (She also goes on to call Trevor 'a bit of an L 7' or a square and I think that's really funny, like yeah, yeah he wouldn't be there, he would be square)

She does work really hard to leave something that, in her eyes, is positive to her image. She's reinventing herself to make her crawling back to the company worth it. To prove to herself that it wasn't a mistake and to leave a legacy that, hopefully, most people will look fondly on instead of in contempt or betrayal. She wants to leave something of value, because I can imagine there is a part of her that doesn't hold any value in herself, not after failing to make a difference that actually mattered and becoming part of the problem.

And I dunno I feel like that adds just an extra layer to her which is pretty cool. I could also be reading way too much into this idk.

Anyway, the other two videos are very cool too. Yuri talks about how Trevor's life isn't boring like Walton thinks it is, its just 'Exciting in the wrong way'. He also talks about how he thinks lots of people will relate to Trevor (So true) and how just because your life may be simple, it doesn't mean its boring and not worth living which I think is very sweet. Thank you Yuri. Krizia talks about how she really related to Angela because she grew up on Puerto Rico and how she got to add a couple of 'spicy words' as she put it, in her dialogue for a bit of extra authenticity. She also talked about how Walton was the job Angela always wanted, but after 'peaking behind the curtain' she realised that it wasn't the dream she thought is was, it's both kinda heart breaking but also very relatable, especially I'm sure to those in the entertainment industry. It makes me really want to know what her 'peak behind the curtain' moment was and what the steps where to get her to this point in more detail (Hey hey, Out of the Blue, hey please. please make that prologue thing you said was a good idea of mine on twitter. Hey, please? Please? It has the Regi Davis stamp of approval, please?)

The videos are very cool I'll put them under the cut if you're interested. I just wanted to have a ramble cause I haven't in a while and I've just been thinking about this.

Do we think the maire3xx person on twitter was legit now? I unfollowed after that farm leak on the Duffers birthday, but the latest Will leak has got me wondering again, since she did predict something off in his appearance...

Personally I think the evidence we have point to them being a fake that's just very good at guessing some things for now, I'm gonna keep the possibility that they are not lying open just because either way it doesn't actually hurt my personal theories since they say Mike is bi and byler is endgame lmaoooo

but if I have to be 100% fair I haven't seen any actual proof that they are telling the truth AT ALL and all the "leaks" so far are things that could be guessed by looking at the casting announcements for example, even Will looking possessed could have been guessed because in the finale he literally talks about how he's feeling the connection with Henry again... Like it's all very guessable so idk I don't actually believe them, I started following again just to see what they invent next but they have posted MULTIPLE fake pictures taken from the internet lying about having taken them themselves when they literally did not and also they keep posting too much, they look more like they want attention imo

Also if they were a real leaker they would be extremely stupid to risk being found out??? what if someone started messaging the production accounts to signal that account and they opened an actual investigation on who's running that? They are risking a lot if they really work there because there are ways to find out, and they have literally said for example that they filmed this scene personally so from this alone someone inside the production would understand exactly who they are

quick question, what's an era 2 tumblr user? we have eras??

it's sorta something I made up myself. tumblr has gone through various shifts in presentation and tone that dramatically affected how people use the website. honestly idk if anyone besides me actually uses this system, but I'm gonna use it anyway because it's funny

so Era 1 is from the start of tumblr until dashcon. this is where the dashboard had those weird lines on the side of reblogs, was the hight of superwholock, allows editing other people's posts, and was filled the overwhelming prevalence of fandom. back then, tumblr wasn't very mainstream and most people who used it were big nerds (affectionate). so there was a strong sense of community between people who had shared interests.

Era 2 starts after dashcon in summer of 2014. this was a disaster of an event that sorta boosted tumblr's popularity for better or for worse. this is also when I first joined in late 2015 as an undertale blogger originally (my first blog has since been deleted though). this is what I'd call the meme era of tumblr. it's when most of the most popular jokes are from. it's when massive inside jokes and tumblr references started. and it's the time where the most people were active. and it lasted until about late 2018 with the porn ban

Era 3 was kicked off with many users deciding to leave tumblr near the end of 2018 beginning of 2019. tumblr's policy on porn up until then had been "go nuts. show nuts" until it was bought by virison who tried their best to make it "family friendly". the whole thing was handled very poorly ("female presenting nipples") and didn't even get rid of all porn, just porn from sex workers and artists who sold nsfw content to make a living. most of those people left for sites like twitter, and many other sfw artists (and also people who just used tumblr for free porn) left with them. for a while, tumblr was pretty empty. but not entirely. there were still very close knit communities, arguably even closer than Era 1 even. and honestly, this is when tumblr was at its most usable. it was quiet. the only thing that you had to worry about was the occasional porn bot (and staff's growing authoritarianism, but we'll get to that). it's hard to argue when exactly Era 3 ends. I like to say it's when elon musk bought twitter, but I also think it might have started a bit before then. it's more of a slow transition that happened sometime between early and late 2022

Era 4 is the return era. when everyone who went to twitter came crawling back. this was sorta kicked off with staff starting to be more lax with their porn restrictions. but don't think that staff was having a change of heart and suddenly nice. for the longest time, they had been overstepping boundaries and abusing their authority, such as banning mainly Black and leftist users calling them "Russian psyops". it was also around this time that people discovered that there were several terfs on the development team, and that was likely the reason they didn't ban nazis and terfs despite both being in clear violation of the tos. tumblr staff tried to distract from this controversy by adding a bunch of gimmicks. the crabs for April fools, blazing posts, checkmarks, tumblr live. this for some reason actually worked, and a lot of people just forgot or didn't care about staff any more, and it actually brought in a lot of new users. I have no idea how long Era 4 will last. all the Eras have been kicked off with a massive change in how social media operates that becomes more dramic and impactful each time. so short of the us government completely banning tiktok for good, I doubt Era 4 will end any time soon.

sorry this turned mostly into a rant against staff near the end. as you can obviously tell, I'm sorta biased towards Era 2 and 3, as that's when I had the best experiences with tumblr. and a lot of the problems I have with the site today can be traced back to staffs stupid decisions and abuse of power and authority.

but yeah. I hope that makes sense.

what do you think the chances are about the admins listening about how unfulfilling it is to watch our streamers watch lore instead of actually participating (+ the burnout thing) ? i feel like theyve been receptive to some things, but they could easily write it off as "a vocal minority" despite it very well being the shovel for them to dig the servers grave with

I think that the admins are actually pretty responsive to viewer feedback from what I've seen. If enough people say something, then there's a pretty good chance of something happening.

Like, the other day there were (extremely valid) complaints about Quackity not having French subtitles on his stream, and today Elena uses French text-to-voice for the books she was reading.

I think that Elena in general was actually an attempt to work with some of the complaints, and I'll give the admins kudos for that. It's really hard to balance the story you want to tell and the audience's complaints- take it from me, I'm a GM on occasion, it's HARD. I think that Elena is meant to be a more relatable figure than Cucurucho, and I think that she's in place as the pov now because of complaints about Cucurucho's pov.

I think that any feedback needs to be polite and concise. Say exactly what you want to say in the comments of the stream's vod or on Twitter/Reddit/Facebook/Wherever, but be polite about it. The admins are legitimately doing their best and I have a feeling that this is their first time running anything like this, so you gotta cut them a bit of slack.

They obviously won't change the story, but maybe if they understand what everybody's criticism is actually about, the way the story is approached can be adjusted at least until the ccs are all back from break? Idk, I'm actually pretty optimistic despite all my posts. If enough people voice their criticisms in a nice way, maybe something can happen. They've changed some story beats because of audience reactions by now I think (egg rescue, Elena, Minimes, Cucuruchito, etc), so who knows?

On Lucifer S5, Michael, and God (but mostly God)

(See end notes for disclaimers)

I did a Twitter poll about which Lucifer meta I should write up first, and I actually got responses! \0/ 4 out of 7 people wanted to see my thoughts on Michael, God, and S5 first, so let's do this :P

Thesis statement: Michael played the long con and pushed God into retiring.

The Evidence:

Michael plays off people's fears -- that's his power -- and he can bring out the fears of both humans and angels alike. (Which is very interesting because Lucifer's desire power doesn't have the same pull on celestials, and Amenadiel can only freeze time for mortals.) So, if Michael's power worked on his siblings, then who's to say he couldn't play on God's fears as well?

God admitted -- in actual words spoken in S5 -- that he was scared he was losing his powers. And then, of course, that plot point went exactly nowhere and seemed to have no bearing on why he retired -- but still, God admitted to being afraid!

Well, I'm taking that evidence and proposing that Michael manipulated this fear and amped it up the same way he amped up Amenadiel's and Chloe's fears. When Michael positioned himself to be the next God, he wasn't just taking advantage of Dad's retirement. He'd been planning the move for a long time.

What makes this theory particularly interesting is that for Michael's plan to work, God has to be afraid of something. Michael can't invent fears, just like Lucifer can't invent desires. But how could God be scared of anything? Why would he fear he was losing his powers? It makes no sense, right? Because he's God who's supposed to be all-knowing and all-powerful.

My theory, and the one I've written into my Can We Keep Her fic, is that God can only see all of time and space when he's in that universe to witness it. The second he retires to his wife's universe, he no longer knows what's happening on Earth. Now, let's take that to the next logical step. God can see the future (or predicts it ala Uriel because he sees everything in the present and knows everything about the past -- unclear which it is from the show). But if he can truly see EVERYTHING, then he should know that he retires one day. Instead, he's scared he's losing his powers. That implies that God can't see his own retirement. And he can't see it because he switches universes. Everything after he retires is a black hole of nothing to him, and he has no idea why. That would be terrifying to someone who has always known everything, who's always been in control of everything. If God can't see the future anymore, and he doesn't realize it's because he retires to another universe, then he would absolutely be scared that he was losing his powers. Especially as time passed and that black hole of nothing got closer and closer and the future he could see grew smaller and smaller until all that was left was the present day.

Now, God probably stopped seeing the full future LONG before S5 and long before Michael began manipulating him. Exactly, when he noticed depends on how much of the future he can see at any one time. Given that free will exists to make the future malleable, he probably can't see indefinitely into the future. So, he might not have noticed anything was off until like, idk, maybe a hundred years out? A hundred twenty? And when he saw the nothingness on the horizon, he probably just figured the future was in flux more than normal. Nothing to be concerned about. :)

But then he gets, let's say, 40 years out and that black hole has only drawn closer. Nothing has replaced it. There still isn't any future. NOW he starts worrying. Maybe, he thinks, maybe he should interfere and take some direct action again. Because something must be wrong with Earth that's affecting the future. He doesn't think it's his powers yet. No, a balance is off in the universe if its not progressing the way God expected it to.

So, he sends Amenadiel down to bless the Deckers with Chloe (oh yes! We're connecting all the dots now because why the hell not?). God puts Chloe on Earth to speed up Lucifer's realization that he can help the souls stuck in Hell. ("evil shall be released", remember?) God could afford to be patient before -- he and the angels are immortal beings after all, and Hell is purposefully designed to make time irrelevant. Guilt and torment doesn't compound in Hell the way it does when alive on Earth because nothing new ever happens in Hell. It runs on loops, offering a person chance after chance to make things right. Plus Hell runs out of sync with Earth. Time moves faster in Hell which lets the loops repeat even more. A soul trapped in Hell could have a thousand years of opportunities to get out while only a month has passed on Earth. It's an attempt to have family and friends arrive in Heaven more or less together instead of spending eons apart.

But the systems must not be working anymore. They're (seemingly) running out of future, and God can't afford to be patient anymore. So he interferes, Chloe is born, and it works! God can see the timeline shift, he can see the changes in Lucifer -- but the future is still black. THAT'S when he gets truly scared and fears that he might be the real problem, that he might be losing his powers. And this is when Michael steps in to start manipulating that fear, before S5 but not before Lucifer meets Chloe. I don't believe Michael was manipulating things for decades, because I don't think God's fear was strong enough for Michael to sense until the last couple of years. But once dear old Dad showed weakness, Michael -- the one who's never had the power he thinks he deserves -- absolutely pounced on it, whispering lies in his ear, making offhand comments about God losing his grip on the world, but framing them as concern. You know the drill.

Now, this theory falls apart entirely if you believe God is not only omnipresent but also truly all powerful and can do anything he wants with a snap of his fingers. If that's your belief, then I guess God was just faking being scared he was losing his powers in S5? He was play-acting to manipulate everyone because he wanted Michael and Lucifer to go to war? (and therefore wanted Remiel to be wiped from existence like Uriel???) Like I guess that's an interpretation? A bit convoluted and renders the story pointless, though, imo. Why would S5 exist -- why would the entire show exist -- if God truly planned and controlled everything and no one else had any power over the narrative?

Especially because the second biggest theme of the entire series, right behind anyone can be redeemed, was the theme that angels were just as flawed as humans. Powers and immortality didn't actually separate angels from humans as much as angels wanted to believe. They weren't fundamentally different or better than humans. At our core, the show said, angels and humans were the same.

And God. This theme extends to God as Amenadiel realized in S5. God is as flawed and prone to mistakes as humans. That's what makes him interesting! And these flaws create story. Instead of an all powerful being manipulating everyone like puppets, you're telling a story about a parent who fucked up and let his kids down. A story of someone trying and failing to balance work (being God) and home (the angels, the Goddess of All Creation). Where plans, however carefully constructed, don't always work out the way you believed they would. All universal concepts applicable to our every day lives! There's a reason religions like the Greeks and Romans wrote their gods with human flaws. Because ultimately every story (and yes religion is story brought to life by faith) is crafted to reflect us as human beings, to explore aspects of our desires and fears and relationships. Because if it doesn't do that, then what is the point? How is it even a story?

So yes, I believe God was flawed in Lucifer. He made mistakes. He was scared, and ultimately his powers came with limitations just like everyone else has. One of his sons took advantage of those limitations and preyed on his fears until God believed he should step down. And when God caught on to what had happened (because I believe he did realize Michael had manipulated him before the end), he still chose to step down because he realized not having his powers wasn't as terrifying as he'd thought, and because he missed his wife. But he didn't retire as a perfect God. That wasn't his character arc. He still made mistakes. He continued to believe it was best not to interfere, that his children should stumble and figure things out for themselves -- even though children learn through examples and guidance more than anything else. (There's letting your child try and fail on their own and then there's never giving them the tools to stand on their own to begin with.) God retires without a succession plan because, despite confessions and apologies and heartfelt I love yous, in the end he still chooses to be God rather than a father. And I personally think that makes him very flawed.

*During my entire first watch of the show, Lucifer rode the knife's edge between being a garbage show I was embarrassed to be watching and a canon soulmate AU I couldn't stop obsessing over. Clearly we landed firmly in the obsession camp, but I've avoided all cast and crew interviews to keep it that way. Sometimes behind-the-scenes footage/interviews are incredible and useful. Other times, they can utterly ruin the show. Lucifer seemed like it would have a high chance of the latter so I prefer to stick with aired episodes. If it wasn't explicitly stated in canon somewhere (and even if it was sometimes), then it's still up for interpretation.

*This fandom seems allergic to meta or at least to posting it publicly on an easily searchable site, so apologies if I'm retreading old ground. I've been studying fandom opinions via reading AO3 fic in chronological order, but I'm still in the S2 era, so I have no idea what S5 theories have already been floated by others.

All that being said.... What are your takes on God's retirement or Michael potentially orchestrating it? I fully admit there's some reaching with connecting Chloe to God not being able to see the future past his retirement. It never crossed my mind until I was writing this up properly, but I kind of like it??? Besides, ideas can't bake properly in a vacuum, so let's chat about your own takes! Narrative Frameworks in Only Friends

Something I have been tracking as part of the ongoing discussions about Only Friends is the use of the narrative framework for each episode.

So, I’m making this list specifically for tracking purposes, to note which framework was used for which episodes, if they repeat, and what they may be paying homage to. The goal is to update it every week. Due to suggestions, I am also tracking the end credit scenes, as well as any specific visual or audio formats used in the episodes.

Frameworks so far:

1. Voiceovers: gives the audience specific insight into a characters thoughts and feelings; also a great way to provide exposition. It’s more of an audio than visual framework, as we don’t always see the character doing the voice-over because it plays over other scenes.

2. “Talking Heads” (is there a better descriptor for this?): The characters talk directly to the camera, interview/documentary style. We get to see exactly how they feel about a given moment because they are reacting to it at that time. Audio and visual. Homage to Love8009 (per P'Jojo).

3. Social Media (ft The Artist Formerly Known as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook): Not as insightful as the other two frameworks but does give context and a way for interaction, commentary, and exposition on a given plot. Visual. Probable homage to Together With Me, one of the first spicy BLs starring our kings, MaxTul.

(Side Note: I was re-watching some scenes from Never Let me Go and realized P'Jojo uses yellow text on the screen in it too. So maybe he just likes the yellow text or maybe it means something, idk, idk.)

Discussion: It appears the frameworks are dead. Long live the frameworks. We barely knew ye.

Honestly, part of me is glad they dropped them all together. One episode without them, maybe two, before bringing them back would still work. Bringing them back now does not work. The show has moved beyond them at this point. As sad as it is that we didn't get anymore of them, I'm still glad for what we did get.

I am willing to be we'll get some kind of framework next week because it's the finale and will feel like a book end to the premiere. Potentially, I could see the voice over coming back. But if we don't , we don't.

I wasn’t able to catch the comments on the actual fic but judging from the ones on your post addressing this…it’s very safe to say that none of them actually read the fic. Which is fine, and I’m never going to be happy about making people read stuff which violates their boundaries, but it really doesn’t help their case when they try to claim moral superiority…(and yes that is what they’re doing. The immediate aggression and like. Not even attempting to understand the other perspective outside of their pre established expectations and stuff really doesn’t hide it)

what I don’t think people realize is that the act of tagging dark content as *dark content* is a direct acknowledgment that the work treads into ‘impure’ or ‘immoral’ grounds—which is to say that it’s an acknowledgment that this shit isn’t to be condoned IRL or anything. Like, I’m sorry, if someone is genuinely into incest (to clarify, by that I mean someone who’s like. Into it. Brings it with them IRL? Idk how to exactly define it but I think most of us know what I mean) was tagging the work, they’d wouldn’t really tag it like dark content, nor would it really carry the sinister undertones and sense of ‘offness’ that the large majority of dc fics have in my experience. I’ve gone ahead and read the thing and sure enough IT IS PROPERLY TAGGED AND ACKNOWLEDGED AS DC BY THE TAGS AND WITHIN THE NARRATIVE. THE FIC IS LITERALLY ABOUT HOW TERRIBLE AND TOXIC CODEPENDENCY IS AND AVEN AND READER’S RELATIONSHIP IS A WORST CASE SCENARIO OF TOXIC CODEPENDENCY—

Which, is to say, the way people just act on their assumptions like this is depressing. Lots of Twitter migration tho so not super surprising but it still is. Honestly I could write a whole post or essay on this because there are layers to this…like a delicious onion. but it’s really tiring seeing people just go for the throat whenever they see anything remotely ‘immoral’. Just look at the shit that went on with Andi and Leilei. They’re remaining within their own bubbles and really don’t bother to again, understand dc creators. You did link cinnamonest’s excellent post, but I really doubt any of them read it. It’s just a mob mentality, which thrives off of the immediate dopamine and adrenaline rush whenever they condemn ‘evil’ and whatnot. Idk. But also I suspect that some of the ppl who left those comments have at least read some of ur prior works, and if that’s the case…ah, yes. How I love it when people place horrendous things against each other to argue which ones more immoral. Seriously. Why should you be worried if noncon or if incest is worse?????? Both are bad and that sort of conversation is really morpnic. Are these people actually having these consequences? Yes and no. Not IRL, but there’s definitely stuff happening internally in order to, as always, justify the individuals actions. Again there’s a ton more I can say but this is getting long. I’m personally conservative with tags (tumblr search engine tags) which helps minimize it and stuff. At the very least you’re taking it in stride—I personally wouldn’t interact with them much. In another note, it’s good to see you aren’t turning a thing into a thang. If those people aren’t even going to bother to put on a veneer of courtesy, there is no reason to take them seriously

exhibit A: him "drunk texting" fans on bubble during exo fanmeet in april. mind you this was right in the middle of the legal battle with SM which we had no idea about at the time. fans were so emotional - first exo performance as a full group in over 3 years, baekhyun fresh off his military life, yadda yadda yadda - he was pretty drunk from the post concert dinner the group had. yet later we found out idols need to review messages THREE TIMES before sending anything on bubble lmao 😭 i'm not saying he was faking it - i'm saying even drunk he knew exactly what these texts were gonna do to the fans. he is that good at riling people up like that + preemptively digging his parasocial nails into the fandom cause he knew shit was about to hit the fan.... I love his mind

exhibit B: the most recent example and something that had me crawling up the walls. i'm not saying he faked it or that he planned to fall asleep on purpose during a livestream, i completely believe baekhyun is careless and overworked enough to do that. what makes me scream into a pillow is the way he was UNFAZED by that shit when he woke up. had his manager blowing up his phone asking him to wake up and +40k people hearing him moan in his sleep and he woke up and stayed in the livestream. FOR 30 MORE MINUTES. he laughed it off and started joking teasing people etc etc like he genuinely dgaf.

might I add this pattern of starting twitter lives early in the morning only started after the comeback which i think is very interesting. i dont think its a coincidence at all but i need to gather my thoughts on that

exhibit C: not manipulative per se but this fucking clip is so insane to me i love how the worst things happened to exo completely unprompted it's like seeing an episode of the office. anyway baekhyun taking one for the team and distracting fans with his silly little dance.. THAT'S RIGHT HE'S THE GUY THAT STEPPED UP. and i think it showcases his quick thinking and social skills perfectly cause the rest of these men were frozen in place with half their asses out but baek just took it like a champ lol. he just wants to be seen <3 and told he's done a good job <3 give him all the praises please

exhibit D: this horrible fucking live. just baekhyun as a whole in superm.... like he's not dumb he knew nctzens were eating him up and shipping him w taeyong and what did he do? he went ahead and gave them exactly what they wanted.. while wrapping taeyong around his little finger might I add. now i think irl baekhyun and taeyong aren't that close, they're like those friends from work that you genuinely like but it's not someone you would seek out outside of pretty specific social settings. but baekhyun isn't fucking stupid he knew nctzens were a segment of kpop fans he could tap into and either turn into his own fans or he could get slapped in the face by exols turning on him.

anyways this is so fucking long im sorry to ppl following me i'm on mobile and can't make a read more. no one cares about the weird things i only notice about baekhyun but yes there's more to it i just dont have links for most things... but there's not a lot of specific examples idk once you notice it you just watch content with baekhyun and it becomes pretty clear.
