anyways. enough spitballing
i was so right abt fun parent tai
YANG: Do you… wonder why he’s not here? With everybody else? I know Qrow said he’s on assignment, but what’s more important than here? RUBY: Maybe we don’t have the full picture. YANG: I don’t know. Some things you just need to be there for.
first. there are two possibilities: if qrow knows what this “assignment” is, he hasn’t filled in his nieces and the old guard backslid HARD after team rwby fell—the exclusion of ren and nora from the secret meeting in B1 also points in that direction, so it feels quite plausible; on the other hand, if raven knows where tai is and what he’s doing, it seems strange that ruby and yang would not also know, unless the girls haven’t asked her about summer at all (in which case i’d believe that they’re just not really on speaking terms).
like if raven had a conversation with ruby about summer, i can’t see her hiding ‘the full picture’ with regard to tai if she knew about it, even if qrow wanted her to. maiden of knowledge, begrudging oz his secrets, and all.
on the other hand. if the girls know everything qrow does, that would imply that tai’s “assignment” is either an ozpin secret (and oz hasn’t been keeping his promise to be honest, which feels incongruous with him actively fighting his curse now) or a taiyang secret, in which case i am one hundred percent sure it isn’t to do with the crown of choice.
“maybe we don’t have the full picture,” says ruby, thinking about what the blacksmith showed her and what the blacksmith said. that’s the big lesson she learned in the tree, not to jump to conclusions on incomplete information. so that narratively links tai’s mysterious “assignment” to summer’s mysterious “last mission,” which was a “summer secret.” if tai stayed behind in vale to deal with a taiyang secret that not even oz knows about… it’s summer. lol. it can only be summer. if it were the crown, oz would know because ozpin would have given him that assignment in the first place; if it were defending people hiding in mountain glenn, there’s no reason for it to be secret.
but if he knows summer is alive and well and with salem, and he’s trying to, i don’t know, turn her against salem (or ‘save’ her)… well. maybe we don’t have the full picture indeed.
second. oouuugh the weight of what yang doesn’t say. back in v4 she forced herself to put on the prosthetic before she was ready and white-knuckled her way back to functional so she could go find ruby because her dad said he hadn’t gone after ruby because he had “some stuff to look after” at home, and yang thought he meant her; that the only reason he wasn’t out there with ruby was because he had to be here with her.
so she removed herself from the situation—left to find ruby herself—and tai… stayed at home. it’s been months, now. atlas fell and everyone is regrouping in vacuo, trying to prepare for an attack they know will come sooner or later, except tai, who is “on assignment.” what’s more important than here? what’s more important than being here with both his daughters, at the end of the world? if qrow knows, what’s so important that he has to keep them in the dark? if qrow doesn’t know, then it can’t reasonably be to do with the relic at beacon—which is the only thing that could arguably be more important than joining the vacuo coalition.
“some things you just need to be there for,” says yang. my dad just kind of… shut down. and then dad was always busy with school and ruby couldn’t even talk yet; i had to pick up the pieces. i had to keep things together, alone. ruby starts to reminisce about coming to this place with tai when they were kids, and it’s a fond memory for yang too…but one undercut with all of this. the outings were fun—they slowly increased from once a month treats to twice-a-week because ruby got so excited—(ruby is over the moon when she sees the boba shop; yang spends half the walk there second-guessing herself and downplaying the surprise; both reactions speak to their experiences of these outings in childhood)—and why isn’t he here now? why is it, once again, yang trying to pick up the pieces alone while he’s busy with something else more important?—and this time it isn’t even that he’s going to work to put food on the table and make sure bills get paid, he’s just “on assignment” doing… something. that qrow either won’t tell or doesn’t know.
and that feeling is what incites her to talk to ruby about her own failings, and the first thing she says is i don’t need an explanation, because she doesn’t want to make ruby’s crisis about herself but also because she’s about to apologize for not being attentive enough or present enough or aware enough to Be There when ruby needed her.
which is not untrue (surprise! parentified children don’t make good parents for their two-years-younger siblings!) but also. back in v5 when she confronted raven, yang compared herself to raven (you’ll give me the relic and run because you’re afraid of salem; i’m afraid of salem too but i’ll be here waiting for her when she comes after me).
and that’s what yang is doing here with tai (he was physically there and provided for their needs and took them on fun outings sure, but he wasn’t there, when yang looks back on her childhood what she remembers is a sense of overwhelming responsibility and isolation because her dad wasn’t present, and now he’s not even here; she let ruby down in a similar way, being around without really seeing what ruby was going through, but she sees now how she failed and knows what she needs to do to make up for it and she will, she promises, she already is.)

today's ATLA headcanon, Ozai isn't actually as manipulative as he comes off as a result of Azula, Iroh, and Zuko's stories, he's got the emotional intelligence of a goldfish that's been dead for two and a half weeks and i apologize to all goldfish necromancers for the grievous insult
he's opportunistic as hell, a deft political player (as long as he doesn't have to actually DO anything), but he's essentially a man-child and not a terribly sophisticated one at that. He doesn't outright manipulate people so much as dangle stuff he KNOWS they want just long enough so he can snatch it out of reach and then laugh at them for being sad
he didn't intend to set up Azula for being starved for affection and attention, he probably barely thinks about her whenever she is not actively making him look good by association, and he completely ignores Zuko whenever possible, not out of active malice but with an indifference that's somehow even nastier. They barely exist to him as independent beings and they mistake any lack of active abuse from him as signs of favor when his mental space is an empty room
he actively refuses to have the emotional intelligence to be much more than a spoiled brat, blowing up and violently attacking anything that makes him look smaller than he is. this nicely makes a contrast to Aang, who acts childish because he IS a child but more importantly is wise enough not to care about how he looks and just roll with things, while Ozai explodes into a screaming fit of murderous violence whenever the universe dares to imply he's not the most important thing in the cosmos. Aang heavily weighs everything he does (which does not rule out his mischief or throwing a monkey wrench into things for the fun of it, its just that when he does Universe Crimes you KNOW it was absolutely premeditated), and if Ozai has ever had an internal thought or moment of reflection in his entire life, pigs will spontaneously manifest rockets and launch themselves to the moon, because 'pigs will fly' is probably a fairly likely thing to actually happen in this setting but the point is that Ozai is, once you get past his menacing exterior and willingness to be a manifestation of Ultra-Racist Colonialism that quite literally wants to burn the world down as an expression of avarice, kind of a dipshit.

The Right time
So. It's been a hot minute, huh?
I'll spare you the long list of reasons why I haven't written for a while, and I can't even promise a full comeback because of my studies and stuff. I've written this very randomly, it's short, and I'm rusty, but I'm still happy I've been able to write something. I hope you'll like it :)
Shout out to @phoenix-fell for proofreading this very last minute, thanks bud!
AO3
------------------------------
Saying that they were shocked was an euphemism. Finding out that one of your friends is now decades older than you and turned into one of the main characters of your favorite childhood book isn’t a commonplace event. It makes you wonder how it must have felt for Jaune to realize that the guy he read about as a kid was actually his future self.
He surely knew how hard it was to process, which is why he left Team RWBY alone for some time, giving their minds the time to ease into that new reality before going straight back to business. In the meantime he’d use that spared hour to help the people of the Ever After that got hurt by the earlier attack, which is hardly a bad idea.
Ruby is visibly shaken, another hit on her sense of duty, feeling once again the failure to save a friend. Weiss is right beside her as the two take comfort in each other’s presence, and Yang feels particularly grateful that Weiss is still fighting to keep her promise to be the best partner she can be. It means that, at least for a little moment, Yang can take time for herself, and address the inner struggles regarding her own partner..
“Are you okay?” Blake, always the observant one, doesn’t miss the betraying flick of worry in Yang’s eyes.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Yang’s quick to answer “It’s just- I think I need to talk to you.” She says, before she can change her mind. She’s aware that it’s not the right time, probably the worst actually, but when was there ever a right one?
“Oh! I- I mean- sure.” Blake’s nervousness is obvious, which is why Yang doesn’t hesitate to take her hand in hers and give it a reassuring squeeze. It works, and Blake lets herself be led outside. “So, what do you need to talk about? Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yes- no- I mean-“ looking down, Yang can see the Rusted Knight, Jaune, moving around with Juniper to help people. She takes a deep breath; she can do this. She has to. “Listen. I know that this, whatever this is going on between us, is still new. And I wanted to wait for the right moment before bringing it up but… then I saw him.” she nodded towards Jaune “Did he even try to get home? How long has he been waiting for us to find him? Or for him to find us?” Yang knows she’s pretty much rambling right now, but Blake’s focused gaze and pointed ears tell her that she still has her undivided attention. “And now I keep wondering: what if that was me? Or you?”
“Yang, we don’t know how things work here, and this is all just a conjecture. But I know that if that was me, I would have waited for you. No matter if I had the chance to escape, I’d never leave you behind.”
“This is not what I meant. I…” now it’s Blakes turn to give her a comforting squeeze.
“What do you mean then? It’s okay, go on.”
“It just… it made me realize: there’s no right time. There’s just here and now. And I don’t wanna force anything on you, you don’t have to answer me in any way. But I can’t risk spending my whole life waiting; I just need to tell you. Blake, I lo-“
Yang doesn’t get the chance to finish, interrupted by a pair of lips pressing on her own. Her first instinct is to freeze, - this is her first kiss, their first kiss! – but she gets one second to reciprocate before Blake pulls back.
“Are you really telling me about waiting and what ifs?” Blake starts, her voice breaking “Yang, I watched you die.” She grips on Yang’s jacket, not holding her but keeping her close “I saw you fall and disappear into a void that I was sure was certain death, and everything just stopped. Atlas, the relics, the evacuation, all gone; all I could think about was that I needed to reach you. I would have jumped if Weiss hadn’t stopped me.”
“Blake…”
“Finding you here has been the greatest relief I have ever felt in my whole life. But, most importantly, it gave me, us, a second chance. I am not risking it, and I am not waiting anymore.” She says solemnly, before looking up and right into her eyes, the amber shining like gold “Yang Xiao Long, I am in love with-“
Yang tries, she really does, but she just can’t resist. She just has to lean down to kiss her again. This time it lasts a little longer, Blake has the time to adjust and kiss her back while both of their arms find their way around each other.
“I’m sorry.” Yang says after pulling back, with a wide grin that says she’s not sorry at all. Somehow Blake can’t bring herself to be mad.
Then, the next time they speak is together, like they’re one person, one mind, one soul.
“I love you.”
They grin at each other. Grins that turn into smiles, that turn into giggles, until they let out a full blown laughter. It’s not even that funny, but they laugh so hard that they start crying.
All of their stress and fears finally find a way out through that pure unrestricted laughter. All of the feelings, good and bad, but most importantly all the love that has been held close to their hearts, are now free and out into the air of that unique and magical world. And they laugh like crazy, like in love.
When it finally calms down, the two women look at each other, catch their breaths, then kiss again.
There’s never a right time for this sort of thing, especially when you’re a huntress and the world has fallen onto your shoulders. They could be gone tomorrow, or live long enough to witness the end of the world.
Now is the right time. So they kiss, and laugh, and enjoy it to its fullest. Because that’s what makes it all more perfect: it’s the present.

Chapter five! Sorry for not updating in a but I've been busy, this ones kinda short, enjoy!
“Okay, so you need new clothes.” I say while loosely gesturing at Isabelle's threadbear dress that she's clearly had just a few years too long.
We got to the safe house about half an hour ago, and Isabelle has already had three panic attacks and even bit atlas once when he tried to pick her up. She looks down at her dress and then backs up at me, her expression clearly conveying that she doesn't think they make clothes in her size.
“Atlas over here makes doll clothes, I'm sure he has something in your size.” I gesture over to Atlas who is wasting a bandaid on the small bite mark that isn't even bleeding.
Atlas has told me that he plans to be a dressmaker once he gets out of college. He works with me since we make a lot of money in our line of work so he can save up to start his own business. He makes miniature versions of his designs for practice, which im sure would fit isa perfectly.
“I'll draw you a nice bath while atlas grabs those?” i suggest, and she just gave me a weird look. With a sigh I grab a small bowl from the cupboard and set in behind the old breadbox. Most of the kitchen appliances here are pretty old and the house is old despite the money we make.
We have to keep a low profile.
Besides, most of our money goes to buying weapons and extra cars so we can’t be traced. “You can go behind there for a bit of privacy, we won't look, promise.”
Atlas says, and I watch her carefully step behind the breadbox as I fill a cup up with warm water to fill the bowl with. I send atlas to go grab a bit of shampoo, conditioner and body wash in a bottle cap.
My hand Hesitates for a moment when Isabelle lets out a small sound of surprise while I was reaching my hand in to grab the bowl. “Not looking, just grabbing the bowl.” I reassure her.
She reminds me a bit of a squirrel. She jumps at the slightest movement, when we were eating early I saw her stuff a bit of food into her pockets, she's fast, and most notably her size.
Now that we aren't actively trying to escape the lab, I'm able to fully take in her size. She goes against everything I learned in school. Logicly, a person of her unique stature wouldn't be able to produce enough body heat to keep themselves alive and would need to be constantly moving and eating to keep themselves alive. Kinda like how hummingbirds drink sugar water and are constantly in a state of movement.
Yet, here she is. Defying math and logic itself by standing at a mere fourish inches tall and near starving to death via malnourishment and seemingly producing enough body heat to not freeze death.
Hopefully she'll answer my questions and explain what had happened to make her like this before her brother comes to collect her. I can't explain why, but the thought of her leaving makes my heart heavy.
With a sigh, I make sure she has everything she needs before I leave the kitchen to go find atlas. It doesn't take long because he's usually in either one of two places, his bedroom or the studio.
I do the same knock that anna did during ‘do you want to build a snowman’ on the studio door, and wait for his confirmation that i can come in.
“knock normally.” he calls back, i can tell that he's focused. A grin stretches across my face and I proceed to bang on his door, again to the tune of the famous kids song. He groans and I laugh, “come in.”
I enter the studio and am immediately hit with the scent of fabric glue invading my sense of smell, I cover my nose while opening the window closest to him. “What are you working on? And does it need that much glue?” I ask, and atlas doesn't even bother to look up.
“Pajamas, Isabelle needs something to sleep in doesn't she?” he replies dryly, a small sigh escapes his lips as he sets down his pin to look up at me.
“Am I in trouble for hitting you with the car?” i laugh at the question, “of course you are.” he deflates, and goes back to his work. “Unless. . .” I start with a smile in my voice, and he turns back and spins around in his chair immediately.
“Find out everything you can about isabelle.”

Can you elaborate on how Weiss should've let her hair down and her attitude should've become more rebellious and less uptight after healing from her family?
Sure!
The show dipped its toes in themes of wealth inequality and classism, establishing that Weiss's family was the most wealthy with the most influence and with the most dark past. I think they had a responsibility to then make it clear that they were against that dark past (including Nicholas Schnee) and against billionaires and classism. And the show also established that Weiss at the beginning of the show was judgmental, high strung, bigoted, and spoiled, but they were trying to get across that she has a heart of gold anyway (though with how they mishandled the Faunus/White Fang issue, it puts a damper on Weiss's early character.) By the time the third season was done, Weiss had already grown much more casual and easygoing, having fun with Ruby and Yang, and it was also established that her home life wasn't very happy and she (with Winter's encouragement) started taking steps to shed her reliance on her father's ways. Then in volume four, we see Weiss more unhappy and subdued than we've ever seen her in very unhappy circumstances with her father treating her badly, and her 'princess' vibes have actually gotten more intense than ever with the heavy jewelry and closed up blue dress. Her moment where she yells at the party goers for being so out of touch and then her actively running away from the life of luxury but confinement she's been stifled in... Plus, songs like It's My Turn, Mirror Mirror Part II, and This Life Is Mine really gave the impression of disillusionment that Weiss was breaking away from everything she knew and finding happiness once she was free from everything holding her back.
The closed off blue-gray dress and heavy jewelry really felt like symbolism to indicate how held back Weiss was. I kind of thought that when she left or when she got to Haven with the others, she would change into something white and open and less princess based (and maybe cut her hair.) And I wanted Weiss to leave the family because of realizing how horrible her parents and grandfather were and how unhappy she actually was, but instead she left because her dad gave her inheritance to Whitley and she couldn't become CEO anymore. And then I thought leaving her family and all the luxuries behind would kickstart a growth arc for Weiss where she struggles with basically having nothing but also starts enjoying herself, and starts realizing how much she never actually wanted the things her parents and grandfather had wanted.
But what actually happened was that they kept Weiss in that muted closed off dress for seasons while kind of just acting like she wasn't concerned about anything and didn't need to go through any changes, and then she went to Atlas. And I thought "Oh here we go, now she's going to start leaning into the rebellion stuff, all of this being in Atlas business is going to make Weiss remember how horrible her family has been and she'll throw off their classist ways and snobbish vibes, and be more of a woman of the people and maybe even let go of her grudge against Whitley and try to get him out because she no longer wants to be CEO and realizes that he's in the same boat she once was in." And then her V7-9 look was even more princess-y and rich and muted and heavy than ever before like being in Atlas had just made her miss her old lifestyle or want to prove she belonged to it or something. And the writers leaned into the 'it's not that billionaires are bad, it's that Jacques is a non-blood related usurper bad apple' thing with Willow being good actually and with having Weiss's grandfather being fine actually, and they had Blake joke about Weiss's family owning everything, and Weiss was still acting like Whitley had ruined her life, and Jacques just got brushed off, and Weiss got all this angel imagery and didn't care about attending the rally for the person going against Jacques.
Then the Schnees lost their whole fortune and mansion anyway, but like, that just makes it feel even more like Weiss didn't want that and would've actually gone back to being a billionaire CEO while dressed like a princess and living in a giant mansion the size of Blake's whole home town. And it just reeks of.... Billionaire simping. I really wish that Weiss had been more rebellious and shed a lot of her princess imagery and got away from the ideals of her family more, because not only would it imo make Weiss a stronger and better character, but it would also make RWBY more progressive because it would be anti-billionaire anti-classism commentary.

it's funny how you're an anti-communist pig when atla itself literally has communist undertones. lmfao.
Everyone, this right here is why you don't "learn" about political movements and government systems from Tumblr and TikTok.
In what world does Avatar have "communist undertones"? Because people were starving?
Because it has kind main characters that go around helping people? Said main characters are a messiah, two children of tribal chieftan that are only not living a good and comfortable life because their home was cosnstantly attacked and raided during the war, an obscenely rich girl that clearly has no problem using her family's money to get what she wants, the prince that would one day become an absolute monarchist, and a bonus a warrior that lives in an island that only exist because another messiah's solution to a conflict that threatened their way of living was CREATING A BORDER BETWEEN THEIR NATION AND THE REST OF THE CONTINENT BY PHYSICALLY SEPARATING FROM THE MAIN LAND and they avoided being dragged into the war for years because they stayed took a "each nation should deal with their own damn problems" approach until their messiah returned.
HOW does that scream "communism"? How does a show that repeatedly said "Drifting away from spirituality had horrible consequences for the world as a whole" fit with communism? Just because they also said "everything is connected to everything else" while STILL showing some level of hierarchy as positive, hence one of the good guys being a monarch and the others having zero issue with it? Saying "the lower classes shouldn't starve" is not the same as "We don't believe society should be split into any class system" and it sure as hell is no "LET'S KILL THE CZAR AND HIS FAMILY SO WE CAN FINALLY HAVE SOME GODDAMN SAY IN WHAT HAPPENS TO US!"
Even the divide between nations was kept in the end - they were co-existing peacefully again, sure, but that shows the lines like "We are really one people, but we live as if divided" is not saying "They should be one huge nation made up of four smaller ones that are ruled by the same system/people" but rather "humans, even with all their differences, are still one large group with no one being better or worse than the rest."
Not to mention, THE main promise of socialism and communism, the main things Marx and Lenin would go on about, THE thing that is actually interesting/has potential about it and that people always use to try and get people to think that "living under communism would be great actually" is COMPLETELY ABSENT in the world of Avatar: the promise of workers not only being treated fairly, but having the control of...
THE CAPITAL
You know, the thing Marx was so invested in he wrote a whole damn book about it and that's why anyone alive today even knows he existed?
Avatar NEVER gets into that. Ever. "Worker's rights" wasn't a matter of discussion EVEN WHEN THE TWO MOST POPULAR CHARACTERS IN THE SHOW WERE WORKING TO SURVIVE!
THE closest Avatar ever got to maybe, possibly, mayhaps referencing stuff that happened in communist nations, was with things like those ships that were essentially goulags - and not only is that a bit of stretch since MANY nations through human history, with radically different systems, had some element of forced labor for the "inferior" people and/or criminals, that would also be the show casting a NEGATIVE light on communism.
"Oh, but the Fire Nation is the evil nation and Bryke has said they used to criticize american imperialism!"
1 - "I don't like the way the US does things" is not the same as "I think the communists were 100% right." That false dichotomy of "If you dislike one, you support the other" is literally just propaganda both sides spread to frighten people into silence so they wouldn't have to deal with the consequences of "supporting" the enemy.
2 - The Fire Nation is also heavily based on Imperial Japan which is WAY older than communism. Once again, this is not a Captalism VS Communism deal
3 - Again, the happy ending of the show has the Fire Nation remain an absolute monarchy, they just changed the monarch.
4 - Bryke also created The Legend Of Korra, and "republic city", the symbol of all the progress the world has supposedly made, is literally just a New York city knock off. These guys literally picked the face of capitalism as a symbol of the main message of the show - they're not your comrades.
You can support whatever the fuck you think is right, but Avatar is not a show that said "communism is good actually", stop projecting just because you like the show or because you're pissed off that a random person online disagrees with you and you want some kind of "gotcha" to say "AH HA, YOU LIKE THIS THING AND THIS THING IS A METAPHORE FOR COMMUNISM! YOU HAVE TO BE A COMMUNIST NOW!"

Tell me about your girls
Hey thanks for the asks! Going to do both WR and CW cause I miss all my girls equally
Who would end a heated argument by defending their actions with ‘because I love you!’ ? I really think its a Schnee move not going to lie, because I can see the Schnees earlier on in relationships being the kind of people who have a far easier time performing love through actions much less through words. So its something which is blurted in frustration far less than something passionately offered, especially if its an argument about the actions of the other. Like Cinder being all horrible to herself or Ruby valuing a mission more than herself.
8. What happens if one of them gets sick? CW: Winter is the worst at actually being sick, well they both kind of are, but she'll be the one to dismiss everything of a symptom as just being a cold. She could be 90 degrees and still just say she has a stuffy nose and she's fine to continue on as normal. Cinder is pretty close to the same except she will make every one aware of how much this illness is doing to her temper with just glares alone. The other is usually the one of the pair to finally convince their other half to just lay down with some medication and calm. Not a lot of babying I feel as much as just very concerned and frustrated that they're failing to take care of themselves. WR: Weiss gets bed ridden sick if she ever does otherwise she's a lot like her sister in that she can still think she can do anything. And by bed ridden I mean Ruby is by her side forcing her to rest because no you should not be doing so much when you're that pale and can't retain fluids. Ruby is by her side a lot regardless, probably even getting her to her work on the days where the illnesses are not that bad; bonus if she sticks around the whole day to make sure Weiss is drinking still. Ruby likely doesn't get ill a whole lot because of her metabolism but when she does its so gross, lots of tissues, moaning, and gurgling the whole way through that makes Weiss forced to play the nurse--though she isn't declining she gets to perform her love through action in the biggest way this time.
20. Choose one song that perfectly describes their relationship. I already gotchu boo
26. What are their vices? CW: I think Cinder and Winter both smoke, it was much more Winter's thing initially from the army and Atlas, but when Cinder is around the taste of cigarettes on Winter's tongue just eventually makes it way into Cinder's and the pack isn't that far behind. For Winter it was a way to destress without losing her faculties like drinking, and for Cinder it was something which got her to be around Winter more often especially during the early post war. Where a better place to get away from the bigger crowds than a smoke on the terrace with just the two of them?
WR: Ruby I tend to think of having the procrastinator's vice, its not that she devalues or doesn't want to do things its just she purposefully stuffs her schedules and workload so that every thing is coming down on her while she is doing other things. So to avoid the stress and horrid nature of having so much going on she's more likely to ignore and reorient herself into some other project or thing where she can get quick gratification from the success. Weiss I think is a little more all over the place, she's smoked once because Winter did, hated the taste, doesn't drink often, but she works a ton to the point where her free time is just an extended work period. Would be the kind of person to put 'my greatest weakness is I work too much' on a resume.
30. Your OTP gets to pick out each other’s outfits; what is each wearing? CW: Winter is making Cinder wear something regal and refined, probably is very much red and gold, looks more like a Duke or Duchess than anything. It isn't something Cinder will complain about but the layers aren't helping. Cinder probably either has Winter finally just wear something which doesn't have a button up or collar on a casual day, or is also wanting Winter to feel some value in herself in a show off sort of way. Open backed dress or cut and polished suit both are on the table. Lots of silvers and royal blue.
WR: Weiss I think would value Ruby wanting to be comfortable but she wants to see Ruby in something more refined than that hoodie and slacks sort of getup. Probably leans more on the polished vest and suit side of things, maybe a little bit of grunge or alt influence in there too with some jewellery and accessories. Just knows to stay away from heels. Ruby though is practically begging Weiss to stop being a fashionista for one day, just wear the jean jacket or hoodie and some normal pants or skirt. Not every outfit needs heels and put the pound of jewellery down, just some good comfy clothes.
42. What’s their favorite type of weather to enjoy together? (getting snowed in together, watching thunderstorms, etc.) CW: Weirdly I think Cinder and Winter's preferred weather is probably the snow. It gives them a lot of excuses to put the world on pause and its not nearly as violent as lightning and thunder. The cold is not much of an issue for either of them but the look of wind whipping snowflakes all around is something so wonderful to see in the background as a day of working from home turns into tea and coffee and some reprieve.
WR: The sun is their mainstay, rain is too draining and the snow and cold is too reminiscent of their time in Argus or Atlas alone. The sun though, bright spring mornings and warm summer days on Patch or Vale is a thing of simpler times and can just be a subtle reminder that they made it to the other side of it all after the fact. It also helps that the warmth allows them to just take it easy for once, and Weiss blood pressure can be reduced without worrying about Ruby taking her out into the snow or rain again.
50. who’s more likely to do something out of spite? CW: Oh Cinder for sure, most often I think spite is her way of reaffirming she is not about to be told around to do something or what have you. Especially in the case of its like post fight or argument, Cinder is off in the apartment blaring music loud and blending nothing because she needs to make sure the appliances work while Winter is bitterly typing away on work.
WR: Weiss, yeah Weiss would be the one to make a point of doing things because "Who else is going to?" and making it a whole passive aggressive thing. Like loudly making a show of 'clearing space' and its just her organizing Ruby's workbench mid project instead of her cluttered workspace.

GUYS, IT'S TIME FOR ATLAS SIX LIGHTNING HEADCANNONS
Lightning is a magical version of a mortal social media app!
To quote:
"It had been Tristan himself who’d advised the Wessex board to consider investing in Lightning, the magical version of a mortal social media app."
Reina
Running a social media account sounds like a lot of work
She really doesn't care
(secretly runs an account that trash talks different plants)
(her followers think she's joking)
(she's not)
Parisa
Definitely posts pictures of her amazing outfits
Gets a lot of comments from people asking her to step on them
Thinks social media is a great way to find people to amuse her or find those she can sway to give her money
Every once in and while she'll post something really smart and intellectual (this confuses 90% of her followers) (the 10% of followers make fun of their shock)
Has a side account where she reviews mystery novels
Libby
Posts inspirational quotes
Posts self-care check-ins
But the real reason people follow her is that she gets into drama with Nico on a daily basis
Tumblr media
Nico
Exists on Lightning to bother Libby
Made a group chat for the Atlas Six, everyone was very resistant to the idea but eventually gave in because he was like 🥺
Posts pictures of himself with captions of how great he is, Gideon always comments on them agreeing, Libby and Max always comment on them disagreeing (Libby being genuinely outraged that he would brag like that and Max just fucking around)
Gets into drama with Libby constantly
Tumblr media
(they don't know they're in a murder cult yet)
Tumblr media
(Don't worry Callum is here to make everything worse /affec)
Tristan
Has an official professional account where he posts boring stuff, like what he ate for breakfast or something, no one follows him
Has a secret anonymous account where he RANTS endlessly about his rage and sadness etc. (mostly he trashes people he knows, referring to them by the first letter of their name or an emoji)
MILLIONS OF PEOPLE FOLLOW HIM ON HIS ANONYMOUS ACCOUNT BECAUSE HIS LIFE IS SO DRAMATIC
They got to witness him ranting about how his "best friend" was cheating on him with his fiancee
They heard him talking about how his father was horrible to him
Then he was like "I joined a secret society" and refused to elaborate
There are ship wars on if AA (Tristan) should date L (Libby), P (Parisa) or C (Callum)
Those that ship him with R (Reina) or N (Nico) don't engage in the ship wars and are chill, they hang out with the poly/mutishippers
Callum found Tristan's anonymous account and recognized it instantly as Tristan, he decided not to say anything and follows him on an alt account
Tumblr media
Callum
99% of the time he posts thirst traps to boost his own ego (post-knife scene Tristan comments on them (with his main boring account) pointing out that not only is Callum's body illusioned but also photoshopped)
1% of the time Callum posts concerning things that scare everyone (ex. "There is no fate so final as betrayal. Trust, once dead, cannot be resurrected" or the selfie he took with the hostage Nico and Tristan kidnapped) (how he manages to escape being suspended is beyond anyone)
All of Callum's followers are very confused when he randomly posts something ominous, though some of his fans have started theorizing that based on when Callum posts his concerning shit and when Academic Anonymous complains about "C" that Callum is "C" (especially since his name starts with a C) (especially since Callum's account matches with the personality AA described).
Callum also decides to be a problem on purpose and bothers all of the Atlas Six on social media, they are very close to blocking him
Atlas
Has 70 alternative accounts he uses to subtly manipulate the Atlas Six into doing what he wants
(Has a AA fan account)
(Gushes about AA daily on every account)
(Will cancel you if you ship AA x C)
(Has "C Anti" in his bio)
(He has "AA apologist" in his bio too)

leo x reader cockwarming hcs
warnings: cockwarming, some nipple grabbing, tooth rotting emotional intimacy and fluff
song recs: acolyte - slaughter beach dog, sunshine - atlas
a/n: wow I got really in my feels towards the end of this!!! I hope this gives you the same emotions I experienced while writing it <3 /p

Tumblr media
As with all nsfw works all characters are aged up to 18+
That being SAID
👀👀👀
Cockwarming leo is the coziest most intimate feeling in the world
Sometimes when you can’t sleep
Or if you’re stressed out
Or even just to level up your cuddling
He just slips inside you and holds you so close
Neck kisses and breathing little words of affirmation in your ear??????
Heaven
And obviously you can’t see this bc he’s spooning you with his cock shoved up inside you
But the visual of his hoodie riding up a little and his sweatpants pulled down enough to take it out??????
🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
God he is so fucking hot
What did we do to deserve him
But yeah
God just like
Wiggling and grinding against him a little
And his hands running over your thighs
Then moving your underwear aside
And he just pops the tip in
And it feels amazing
He pushes in so slowly to the point where you can feel yourself sucking him in
He thinks that’s fucking magical
That is the best feeling in the world
As previously stated
He’s hung as fuck
So for a few minutes you get to enjoy the wonderful familiar stretch of his cock kissing your cervix
And he gets to enjoy the feeling of you squeezing around him, your muscles relaxing into him as your tight walls molding around him, nestling and shaping against every curve and vein
And once you're all comfy and cozy together
Once you’re all settled in with his cock comfortably stuffed inside you wrapped up tight in his arms
His hands will slip under your shirt, rubbing your stomach and chest
Maybe playing with your nipples, grinding against you a little just bc of how much he loves the way you tighten around him and squirm against his cock
Just the feeling of his warm hands on your skin is fucking unmatched
His face will definitely be nuzzled into your neck
God everything about him is warm
His hands on your skin, his breath on your neck, that pool of heat in your core steadily building around his cock
Expect a lot of sleepy kisses
And a lot of drowsy conversation
It starts with how your days were, all the stuff you wanted to tell each other earlier but forgot to now making its way to the front of your memory
Soon you’ll both be rambling about how much you love each other
How happy you are that you have each other
Stuff you want to do someday, daydreaming about your future together
And oh my god he smells so good
I said at one point that he definitely smells like the method sandalwood and vetiver body wash
Which he does
He smells so nice and he’s so so sweet to you
Everything about this boy makes your heart do intricate gymnastics
The emotional intimacy and cozy togetherness is so fucking off the charts
Every part of you
Every cell in your body feels so viscerally warm and fully saturated with love
It’s like separating all your molecules and dipping yourself in sunshine
He’s like bathing in sunshine
And like
You always feel so okay when he’s holding you like this
Around him in general even
Everything’s just right and okay when you’re together
And you know he feels it too
You know from how he holds you and smiles into your neck
The way you can feel him looking at you
It radiates off of him
It’s like an echochamber of warmth
And god after all the shit you’ve been through
Both of you
It really does feel like you unlocked a new level of appreciation and gratitude and mindfulness in these moments
You’ve learned the feeling of making a memory and being in the good old days
You’ve learned to sense the beats of when you’re in a core memory
And you really
Really
Cherish that
You hope this is what forever feels like
Held tight in Leo’s arms, as physically close as you can get, muttering all the ways you love each other minutes before you drift off into the best sleep you’ve had in your life
If you could pick one moment to live in
One moment to stretch out into a looping infinite eternity
This one would be a really strong contender

I think people usually confuse delving into darker subjects in writing as the same thing as making a story more mature, when there's actually a difference between the two. You can introduce darker elements into a story, or have it shift to a darker tone. But it's not going to be effective if you don't have enough of an understanding of what makes what you're trying to tackle is so fucked up in the first place, or why the introduction of it is significant and carries so much weight. Without tackling it with finesse, it will come off as immature if anything, like a kid who just discovered curse words.
Every time IDW tries to do this it feels more like it's more for shock value. Another thing it seems to be falling into that over half of the pre-reboot run of the Archie comics did. But at least with Archie there was the spectacle of it having some of the most certifiably insane shit happen.
Friendly reminder that when Flynn got sick of the criticism against the way he wrote the moral dilemma in #50, he justified himself with "it's a children's fantasy, if you adult want something deeper go read something else".
Which says a lot about how much he cares about the stuff he wrote.
My man. No one forced you to write everyone getting pissed at Sonic for not killing Mr. Tinker and whether or not it would be justified to murder a man who doesn't remember his own war crimes. No one forced you to write gruesome scenes such as Vector trapping an infected woman TWD-style, or everything happening to Cream. No one forced you to come up with Surge and Kit and their horrifying nature of being brainwashed into being caricatures, with Surge being forced to feel homicidial hatred for someone he doesn't know and Kit being forced to be an extension of Surge herself. No one forced you to "explore" Sonic's supposed "principle" of giving everyone freedom. You want a dark story? Commit. Children cartoons have done it. Just to make one famous example, AtLA's whole backdrop revolves around exploring the consequences of war and imperialism.
Hell what about Sonic himself? The Storybook games? One with an abusive relationship, and the other brushing over the fear of death? They might not go very deep into these topics, but it doesn't come off as haphazard either!
The MV arc simply didn't matter in the long run! The only consequence of it is that Starline decided to show Eggman who's the better evil scientist by creating Surge and Kit, but there was zero need for all that drawn out angst. Cream herself is completely fine and happy after watching her mother die! Surge and Kit will come back in a few months so we'll see what happens with them, but the story barely explored their fucked up nature, and it only highlighted what a piece of shit IDW Sonic is by being so callous towards both of them. And by giving random angst to Surge via Starline hallucinations that, once again, did not matter at all - Stanley simply really wanted to draw Surge scared and crying.
It's amateurish. I have no other word for it.

Sambucol, 50
50. all the rumors are true
“A gossip hotline,” MJ repeats flatly.
Betty nods. “I thought it was just a weird residual page for news tips, but I logged into the address and it’s all just gossip and rumors.”
“Does Excelsior have a page six that I don’t know about? Are we on Gossip Girl right now?”
Ned has the account access history open on his computer—something he definitely should not be able to do, but which MJ will be turning a blind eye to for the time being. “Only one teacher has ever even accessed this account: Mr. Harrington, on the day it was created. After that, it looks like it’s just the journalism kids from last year, but even that stops in December. Whatever they were gonna do with it, I think they just forgot about it.”
“But people are still submitting?”
He points to the little counter on the inbox tab. “Two tips just came in this morning.”
So they stick the younger newspaper staff on writing puff pieces and taking pictures and decide to spend the period just sorting through the tips in the inbox, on the off chance that there’s a story worth breaking open. Ned collates everything into a spreadsheet, and they filter out all the spam—there are so many links to mixtapes—and libel risks and a bunch of gross stuff that makes MJ want to pitch a schoolwide lecture series on sex positivity, and then they divide what’s left between the four of them.
It’s a pity that last year’s newspaper team abandoned the inbox when they did, actually.
Between MJ and Peter, they trace a bunch of tips that would have broken the cheating scandal at Atlas Academy two months before anyone else reported on it. Ned finds a bunch of messages that sound like someone who watched too much Breaking Bad spinning out theories about a vague chemical smell in the biology hallway, except that they all showed up a week before the fumes from improperly stored chemicals in the labs almost started a fire.
Betty even finds a few leads about stories that don’t seem to have been broken anywhere yet, and once they’re corroborated a few times, MJ throws them onto the whiteboard so they can assign them to the rest of the crew for investigation.
It would almost feel like a real newsroom, except—
Well.
Once they’ve filtered out the libel, and the slutshaming, and the contextless passive aggressive digs sent in because of interpersonal drama, they only have two things left: hints that might lead to actual stories around the school and gossip about teachers.
At first, MJ is worried that they’ll find something that she won’t know how to deal with, but half an hour into digging through the messages about school staff, it becomes clear that this is just where the student body goes to marvel over the fact that their teachers have lives outside their jobs.
‘Pretty sure Mr. Murdock is some kind of secret ninja,’ writes one student. ‘He caught Mr. Nelson’s coffee mug as soon as it got knocked off the desk and NONE OF IT SPILLED. No guidance counselor has reflexes that fast.’
‘Saw Mr. Rogers (AP gov teacher not the PBS guy) lift a whole ass couch in the teachers lounge. What the fuck,’ says another, not explaining what they were doing in the teachers lounge in the first place.
Some of them are too out there to be true: ‘Dr. Strange came into my coffee shop on Saturday with this lady and he smiled when he ordered his drink????? he’s been bodysnatched. Source: three years of class with this fuckin guy where he never cracked so much as a smirk.’
Others make so much sense that MJ’s not sure why they didn’t clock them before: ‘ran into Coach Barton straight up LARPing in the park. he had his face painted blue.’
And then there are the submissions that form such a strong pattern, anyone with half a brain would dig further to find the truth.
‘Worked a wedding this weekend,’ says a tip from last October, ‘and Mr. Wilson and Mr. Barnes were there together!!! TELL ME YOU TAKE RANDOM COWORKERS TO WEDDINGS WITH YOU.’
From December: ‘Mr. Wilson brought his nephews to the winter street fair and I heard them in the hot chocolate line asking him when someone called Uncle Bucky would get there. then Mr. Barnes showed up so I got distracted. WHOS BUCKY THOUGH? IS MR. WILSON MARRIED????’
From February 14th: ‘had Mr. Barnes for first period geography today and he was running late so we had to wait for him to unlock the door. he turned on the lights and there were flowers on every flat surface except our desks. this is not single dude behavior.’
There are two from the same night at the end of February. ‘JUST SHOWED MR BARNES AND A PRETTY LADY TO A TABLE FOR TWO. THERE ARE CANDLES. I CAN’T BELIEVE HES CHEATING ON MR WILSON RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY TABLESIDE CAESAR SALAD,’ says the first.
The second is timestamped ten minutes later: ‘oh lmao nvm thats his sister.’
March 11th brings multiple Mr. Wilson sightings at the farmer’s market where the theater program was running its bake sale, and the general consensus is best boiled down by the shortest message of them all: ‘Mr Wilson trying to be slick and buying organic marmalade in a Rutgers sweatshirt when we all know he went to LSU.’
The tips continue into April (the umpire at Mr. Wilson’s nephew’s baseball game says they looked really cozy) and May (somebody accidentally sits behind the two of them at a movie and just leaves before it gets awkward) and into the summer, too. Someone is convinced they saw Mr. Wilson and Mr. Barnes together at the art museum downtown, another person insists they were grocery shopping together on a Saturday morning, another person sees them trying on tuxes together and definitively declares that they’re getting married. MJ is starting to understand why this inbox may have been abandoned.
When they make it to the end of the spreadsheet, she looks up at Ned and Betty and Peter.
“Do we…do we do something about this?” asks Peter.
“Yeah,” says MJ. “We shut down the email and the submission box as soon as possible, and we get rid of all this stuff. If anyone’s got more tips for us, they can send it through the normal tip line. That’s what it’s there for.”
“On it,” says Ned, already tapping away at his keyboard.
“And what do we do about all this?” asks Betty, gesturing to the spreadsheets and, MJ knows, the messages about Mr. Wilson and Mr. Barnes.
“People see what they want to see,” MJ says with a shrug. “We’d know if it was something we needed to know, and we don’t have the column space to devote to pointless gossip. Ink is expensive.”
Betty doesn’t argue, and MJ turns to the next thing on her editor-in-chief agenda for the day.
That afternoon, she walks home from the bus stop and checks the mailbox before heading up her driveway. Lifting a hand, she waves at the neighbors as they’re getting out of their car, laden with groceries.
“Hi, Mr. Wilson,” she calls out across the lawn. “Hi, Mr. Barnes.”
They both shift their overstuffed grocery bags to wave back, and then Mr. Barnes gets lightly bonked in the nose with a baguette that’s sticking out of the top, and Mr. Wilson is too busy laughing at him to do anything else.
MJ thinks they might not have even realized that she’s already headed inside, except that she’s just turning to close her front door when she sees Mr. Wilson glance around furtively, shrug his shoulders at the lack of passersby, and then kiss Mr. Barnes’s nose.
She shuts the door, shaking her head, and hopes that tomorrow there’s something better in the anonymous tip box than a romance that literally anybody could see from a hundred paces.

Replying to your asks for asks. Forgive me if this is illegible.im drunk. Feel.free.to ignore it lolbut:
Cinder picked up a smoking habit since she was 13
(I couldnt resist doing this one)
Cinder sighed as the trash bag she carried out to the back of the hotel broke, spilling everything out next to her. Her hand instinctively went to her neck as she clutched the collar that she wore, already feeling the shock she’d receive on instinct. No matter how quickly she could clean it up, it wouldnt matter when she’d smell like the trash she was taking out, let alone hide the filth on her uniform before anyone saw her.
Still, she got down onto her knees and pressed her hand against the tear in the bag, closing her eyes as she let her semblance heat the bag to melt it back together. It wasnt a strong hold, but she only needed it to hold long enough to stuff it once more and to make it to the dumpster. And as long as she was quick enough to avoid her step-sisters, the easier it’d be to wash her uniform without anyone knowing what happened.
“Hey, kid. You look like you could use something to loosen up.”
Cinder froze for a moment as she heard someone speak to her, keeping her eyes down as she spoke back, praying that this wasnt someone the madame sent to spy on her. “I-I’m fine. I dont need anything.”
The man laughed and tossed a cigarette to her. “I can see it in your eyes that you’re lying to yourself about that.”
Cinder hesitantly picked up the cigarette and looked over at the man, watching him light his own. She slowly moved her hand to the tip of the cigarette and used her semblance to light it, watching the smoke drift into the air. Her nose crinkled at the smell, practically making her gag at the thought of what she was about to do. Still, she put the cigarette to her lips, imitating the man that gave it to her hoping he was right and that it’d make her feel less stressed.
The first inhale burned her throat, making her gag and cough, already feeling sick to her stomach. Whoever thought this was relaxing had to be wrong. But, she couldnt back down and continued to mimic the man, taking a deep puff from the cigarette, trying to hold back another cough and gag from the taste alone.
“You’ll get used to it,” the man said as he started to walk off. “And in time, you might even have a taste for it.”
Cinder scoffed and tossed the cigarette to the ground once the man was away and started to clean up the trash mess on the ground. A tingle went up her spine as she caught a glimpse of the madame through one of the windows and she moved herself out of sight to continue cleaning, already fearing what she’d think if she were to catch her like this.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ten Years Later
Cinder snapped her fingers to create a flame at her fingertips and slowly moved her third cigarette for the day to the flame, watching as the smoke rose into the air. Her lips curled into a smile as she brought it to her lips, her nerves calming as she took a long drag from it. Smoke left her lips like it would from a dragon as she let out a slow breath in the cold, Atlas air. “Everything is going according to plan, dont you think?”
“Do you really have to smoke now?” Emerald asked as she put her hands in her coat pockets, trying to keep from shivering. “We’re supposed to be meeting with Roman and smelling like smoke-”
“I’ll be fine, Emerald.” Cinder lowered her cigarette and took a deep breath as she continued to walk, the cold not bothering her. She rolled the cigarette in her fingertips as she walked, her eyes loosely following the smoke as she used the half of the maiden powers she had to manipulate the air around her to keep the smoke from touching her. “This will be a quick in and out meeting and I want to make sure I’m calm before getting to him. He’s already a failure of a thief and I dont need him making any more mistakes that’ll irritate me.”
“Then why continue to work with him? We have the White Fang in your hands, more than enough power to get others to work with us… why keep him?”
“Because he’s useful to me.”
“Useful how?”
Cinder took another drag from her cigarette, dropping it to the ground once she was finished and stepping on it. “He has connections to a few groups in Mistral that will also prove quite useful. Even if they want him dead.”
Emerald rolled her eyes with a scoff. “If its connections you want, then send Merc and I out and we can get you in with whoever you need. Once we show them what we can do-”
“The two of you are to stay here with me.” Cinder pulled out another cigarette from the carton she carried in her jacket, frowning when she realized she was almost out, again. “Besides, not everyone is ready for the truth of what we’ll bring. So until Roman proves he’s no longer useful, I’ll keep using him to keep everyone else in line.”
“And if he cant?”
Cinder paused for a moment, lighting her cigarette with a puff of fire from mouth at the mere thought of Roman failing. “Then I’ll make sure he knows his place.”

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you for tagging me @meraki-yao. I am very happy at the oportunity to shamelessly plug many, many of my fics :D Let’s do this!
How many works do you have on ao3?
47
What?! When did that happen? And how?
What’s your total ao3 word count?
502,199
Weirdly less surprising, even thought hat number is completely unreal.
What fandoms do you write for?
Interview with the vampire (2022)
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries
Red White and Royal Blue
Star trek: Deep Space Nine
And I have one teeny tiny Thunderbirds fic
Top 5 fics by kudos
Somewhere I have never travelled (ds9)
Petal by Petal (ds9)
Your most frail gesture (ds9)
Watch that man (rwrb)
Personality (ds9)
I feel like I should count the first three as one, since it’s literally parts 1, 2 and 3 of a trilogy.
Surprising how fast my first rwrb fic got up there.
Do you respond to comments?
Always, usually a bit rambly. I love talking to people about my writing :D
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Puh, that’s a hard one. I’m such a happy endings girl. My instinct was one of my iwtv fics, but they’re more angry than angsty lol, so I’m saying it’s between Of all untruths the truest is you (iwtv) and Do no harm (ds9)
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Your most frail gesture ends with a wedding, though actually I like the accepted proposal in Petal by Petal more.
Do you get hate on fics?
None so far (knock on wood).
Do you write smut?
No. A lot of my fics make it clear sex is happing but I don’t write it and I haven’t really any urge to.
Craziest crossover
My TayNick character crossover New Information. Also my only crossover so far, but that’s a side note.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of. Hopefully having all my stuff archivelocked will keep it that way.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
YES! Someone did a translation of Do no harm into Russian. Only one of the coolest things that ever happened to me (though I would have preferred to be asked beforehand rather than simply be presented with a link).
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. I’m not entirely sure how that would work, but I’d be open to it.
All time favourite ship?
Why do people insist you have to have one favourite over everything else? No, I’m an adult, I can have as many OTPs as I want.
What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Beneath Lucifer’s claws. I love this story so much, but I have it in me to finish it. I also have an old ATLA fic I love to bits, that has really neat bits but I was such a different person when I wrote it, it would need a complete rewrite and half of my favourite scenes don’t really work anymore.
What are your writing strengths?
I’ve been told my pacing is good. And I think I’m quite good at characters voices right when it comes to fanfic.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Punctuation. And I definitely suffer from ‘why use a period when I can use a comma’ disease XD. Scene transitions always feel clumsy to me, I don’t know if they read like it.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Oh, there’s an essay. If I were to give general advice I’d say, avoid it. It’s fun to read when you speak the language and annoying if you don’t, having to look up stuff all the time interrupts the reading flow. It’s even more annoying when you speak the language and the author clearly didn’t.
I’ve seen it done well once, where it was used so the characters couldexchange information because that was the natural thing to do for them, while keeping it a secret from the reader. That was neat. 'But even that could be done by just saying 'he said something in [language]'.
First fandom you wrote in?
Published or not? My first published fic was Jack’s Desk for mfmm. But I also still have fifteen year old supernatural and vampire diaries fics in a notebook somewhere. The world wasn’t ready yet.
Favourite fic you’ve written?
Something unstoppable and Somewhere I have never travelled. Neither of them came out the way I thought they would but I love how they ended up so much.

Let's (re)Read The Eye of the World! Chapter 27: Shelter from the Storm
Tumblr media
It's that time to warn people about spoilers again! My reread has spoilers for the whole damn series and if you don't want to know all the cool secrets, you should go be somewhere else. I try to make this paragraph long enough to hide everything under the "expand this post" thing, but also hopefully you'll just block spoiler posts already jeez!
This chapter once again has the leaves on a vine icon, which as I said before just reflects the Tuatha'an among other things. Perrin and Egwene are traveling with them so this all checks out. Not much to discuss.
Any suggestion that they might go further, or more quickly, was met with laughter, or perhaps, “Ah, but would you make the poor horses work so hard?”
Werthead of the Atlas of Ice and Fire wordpress did a series on Wheel, and one thing he concluded that always stuck with me is that judging by the distances and the timeline, the caravan is actually traveling pretty damn fast! Perrin must just not be good at judging the distances covered on the Caralain Grass.
But Perrin had learned that hidden beneath the surface was the wariness of a half-tame deer. Something deep lay behind the smiles directed at the Emond’s Fielders, something that wondered if they were safe, something that faded only slightly over the days. With Elyas the wariness was strong, like deep summer heat shimmering in the air, and it did not fade.
Perrin seems to be gaining his empathetic powers of Wolfbrotherhood. He does describe the ways any person might notice, but based on the speed of his thoughts so far I'm going to assume he figured that stuff out after getting the supernatural push. Like Rand, he's got a lot of denial.
“Something tells me it’s important to wait. A few more days. I don’t get feelings like this often, but when I do, I’ve learned to trust them. They’ve saved my life in the past. This time it’s different, somehow, but it’s important. That’s clear. You want to run on, then run on. Not me.”
Perrin wants to leave, but his own ta'veren-ness won't let him. It's good that Jordan was planting the seeds for this, since we'll be getting to it in a few more chapters.
“Three Girls in the Meadow,” for instance, the Tinkers named “Pretty Maids Dancing,” and they said “The Wind From the North” was called “Hard Rain Falling” in some lands and “Berin’s Retreat” in others. When he asked, not thinking, for “The Tinker Has My Pots,” they fell all over themselves laughing. They knew it, but as “Toss the Feathers.”
I absolutely love this particular bit of worldbuilding and will probably quote it every time it happens even though I have absolutely nothing to add to it.
“I have to thank you,” Elyas told him, his tone sober and solemn. “It’s different with you young fellows, but at my age it takes more than a fire to warm my bones.” Perrin scowled. There was something about Elyas’s back as he walked away that said even if nothing showed, he was laughing inside.
Perrin really hates sexuality. If he weren't trapped in a narrative where all men coming of age had to get married as quickly as possible, he'd be aggressively asexual. It makes the whole "becoming a werewolf" thing mesh all the more poorly with his character, since raw instinct and wild abandon are things that he never, ever becomes comfortable with.
Then Aram held out his hand to her, and she darted to him, already laughing again. As they ran away to where fiddles sang, Aram flashed a triumphant grin over his shoulder at Perrin as if to say, she is not yours, but she will be mine.
Honestly, as much as I despised the bizarre love triangle angle the show brought in to things, between this and the fact that Perrin's fight with Egwene never mentions her sort-of relationship with Rand, it may not be as entirely out of left field as I thought. Perrin is just extra shitty this chapter.
Sometimes he wanted to shout at them. There were Trollocs in the world, and Fades. There were those who would cut down every leaf. The Dark One was out there, and the Way of the Leaf would burn in Ba’alzamon’s eyes.
I mean, if you talked to them about it, you might either convince some of them or at least hear about the justifications their culture, which is nearly as old as the Trollocs, has come up with? Surely there's answers you could find? Especially without shouting? Come on bro.
Hopper was a scarred and grizzled fighter, impassive with the knowledge of years, with guile that more than made up for anything of which age might have robbed him. For humans he cared nothing, but Dapple wished this thing done, and Hopper would wait as she waited and run as she ran.
And he's going to spend his afterlife being Perrin's babysitter. Not gonna lie, I refuse to believe he's gone-gone as of the end of the series, just because bro deserves something better.
He crooked a finger, and the wolf howled as fire burst out of its eyes and ears and mouth, out of its skin. The stench of burning meat and hair filled the kitchen. Alsbet Luhhan lifted the lid on a pot and stirred with a wooden spoon.
Props to Ish for managing to make Perrin's absolutely normal dream seem so much more terrifying. Just absolutely terrifying.
Beyond the trees where the wagons lay, the wolves howled, one sharp cry from three throats. He shared their sensations. Fire. Pain. Fire. Hate. Hate! Kill!
It's interesting to me that Ish's dream raven seems to have accelerated Perrin's powers developing. Obviously he didn't mean to do that at all, but the stress probably helped open his mind even more. And here Ish thinks he's done this a trillion trillion times before but he's still making rookie villain mistakes.
Egwene did not notice the regretful, sidelong looks Ila gave her. She asked what was going on, and Perrin prepared himself for her to say she wanted to stay with the Tuatha’an, but when Elyas explained she only nodded thoughtfully and hurried back into the wagon to gather her things.
Perrin has absolutely no idea what's going on in Egwene's head, Wolfbrother powers or no. Of course she doesn't wanna stay forever, dummy! She's just been enjoying not spending every other night being chased by demons. If it's time to go, it's time to go so she can get to Tar Valon, the thing she actually gives a fuck about.
Why the hell is Perrin the people person ta'veren when the other two could be dead and Perrin would still be the least socially aware? Rand displays martial and political aptitude from the beginning. Mat's got martial and trickster qualities from the start too, he just gets a bit screwed up by the dagger. But while Perrin is a good fighter, he has absolutely no qualities that explain why people might follow him without reality literally rewriting their minds. I think this is why his arc is the worst of the three boys: he doesn't follow their structure so he wouldn't have had anywhere to go even if Jordan did have content for him.
“Peace be on you always,” Elyas replied, “and on all the People.” He hesitated, then added, “I will find the song, or another will find the song, but the song will be sung, this year or in a year to come. As it once was, so shall it be again, world without end.”
And here's Perrin's ta'veren again, making Elyas be more socially aware (again: Perrin is the people ta'veren even though he's the worst at this stuff) and kind. It's clearly pretty out of character since Elyas bitches about it once they're out of earshot, but it's a kindness that helps bind him more to the group, which would be nice if he ever saw them again. Sadly, I don't think he does, though I feel that if Jordan had lived to write the ending that Perrin would have folded at least some of the Tuatha'an into his group in a better way than what he pulled with Aram.
Perrin did not want to think about his dream. He had thought that the wolves made them safe. Not complete. Accept. Full heart. Full mind. You still struggle. Only complete when you accept. He forced the wolves out of his head, and blinked in surprise. He had not known he could do that. He determined not to let them back in again.
It's also very difficult to accept that Perrin is supposed to be the smart one when upon hearing, "Your dreams could be safe if you were more comfortable with this," is to go, "Fuck no get the hell out!" It's just... Damn. If it were specifically some psychic side effect of the dream raven or something, that might be one thing, but Ishamael never mentions any such thing and the reasons to avoid wolfiness just multiply. The character arc that has the most potential for Perrin is the one where Jordan makes damn sure he never tries and apparently I'm just going to be frustrated as all hell about it this whole reread. Alas.
“Ila was giving me advice on being a woman,” Egwene replied absently. He began laughing, and she gave him a hooded, dangerous look that he failed to see. “Advice! Nobody tells us how to be men. We just are.” “That,” Egwene said, “is probably why you make such a bad job of it.” Up ahead, Elyas cackled loudly.
On the plus side, while my love of Perrin POVs has diminished since middle school, I can safely say that this exchange is just as funny now as it was then. See y'all next time!

If the writers had successfully developed Ironwood into a villain, the storyline still would have faltered because, with the heroes 100% secure in their choices and the enemy vulnerable about theirs, they, no matter how bad, will always feel easier to connect and empathise with because they feel more human compared to the heroes. Ironwood assures not!Penny she's doing the right thing. Ironwood pleads with Winter. Ironwood tears up. The heroes just tell themselves that they made the right choice.
Yeah, RWBY has a lot going on, including a lot of problems, so fixing one aspect, even a big one, isn't going to fix everything else too... but it would certainly help lol.
For me, the most frustrating thing about these later volumes is that the writing gets so close to letting the cast be flawed, complex, relatable heroes, but then continually pulls back at the last moment. Ren calls the group out on their failures, but Yang and Jaune instantly dismiss them. Ruby has a breakdown about how her plan didn't work, but Yang instantly reassures her that they tried, so it's fine. May insists that they make a hard choice for once, but instead they remain in the mansion and the next time we see her, May has completely changed her tune, claiming that there's nothing more the heroes could have done. (With the problem always being that yes, there was a lot more the heroes could have done). And then we've got all the moments where the story doesn't overtly establish a problem, but hints at it strongly, so strongly that in any other show you'd be mocked for thinking it wouldn't be resolved. However, RWBY drops conflicts like hot potatoes. How will Weiss resolve her disagreement with Winter? She doesn't. How will Qrow grapple with his decisions that got Clover killed? He doesn't. How will Yang work through this nonexistent fight with Blake? She doesn't.
Yeah, it's easy to differentiate the good from the bad on the surface because Ruby sheds tears, gives passionate speeches, and Ironwood is, canonically, trying to bomb a city. It's only when you ask what Ruby is crying over, what the speeches lead to, and whether this sudden turn into villainy makes sense (it doesn't) that you might go, 'Hold on, I'm honestly feeling more sympathy for the bad guy legitimately grappling with his decisions, than the heroic girl confidently leading a kingdom to their doom.' RWBY doesn't let the heroes make mistakes anymore, which means that we don't get to read their emotions as anything other than righteous fury. No matter what the heroes say or do, the audience is supposed to respond with, "Yeah! You tell 'em!" which would get pretty old pretty fast even if I did legitimately have that response within the context of the events. But when it's stuff like, "Yeah, you attack that ally instead of sending Weiss to Atlas" or "Yeah, you lie to Ironwood, and Mantle, and the entirety of Remnant, just like Ozpin lied to you" or "Yeah, you strip Penny of her identity without her consent and then frame that as a marked improvement; the chance for her to finally be 'real'" it, uh... gets pretty hard to drum up the emotional response I know the story wants to invoke. Ironwood is a mess by the end of the series and no, I don't feel for the man who wants to kill a whole city for no apparent reason. I do, however, feel for the man who was driven to extremes due to outside forces, part of which came from people he thought he could trust, and from a meta perspective, the authors who gave up on his development halfway through, resulting in a 'genocidal general' that didn't make sense within the story.
