ain’t for me. I wasn’t born and raised to say no to meat as a hispanic texan. I feel it’s too self righteous a lifestyle, and somethin that’s very…hm… class restricted I’ll say. You gotta be able to afford sayin no to animal products. I understand in practice it’s so that one doesn’t partake in the loss of life or harm to an animal… but it’s like, why restrict that guilt to animals? Why restrict it to signals only we easily perceive? Trees and plants communicate to each other too, they also send their own signals of distress when in danger. They’re their own form of sentient. Whatever we eat, we are taking some or all the life of. (I guess except for eggs? bc that's just chicken period) That’s just something we must accept.

Ok so I’ve done a complete re-read through and one thing that kept nagging at me was how little Gideon and Harrow’s relationship makes sense given its quite frankly abusive origins. Harrow spends her whole life making Gideon’s a living hell and Gideon just… forgives her. Total and complete forgiveness for an irredeemable girl.

At first I took the sudden shift in their relationship as lazy writing to rush along the end of the story, but that didn't make any sense either. Muir strikes me as an intensely purposeful writer. Then I remembered that Muir is also an intensely Catholic writer and it hit me. Muir isn’t writing a story about a healthy human relationship, oh no, she’s writing a story about Christ’s relationship with The Church… if Christ was a sword toting butch lesbian and The Church was a sardonic bone witch. Call it tender blasphemy. 

Now Gideon’s role as a Christ figure is fairly easy to parse out given that her dad is… God. But for the sake of self indulgence (I have to put my 15 year long flirtation with Christianity to use somehow) I’m going to go through all the parallels anyway. There are a LOT of them.

Let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start).

Miraculous Conception

Luke 1:34-38

34 But Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I [e]am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the [f]holy Child will be called the Son of God. 

Gideon is conceived by artificial means when one of God’s own servants (Mercy) delivers a sample of John’s genetic material to Wake, a ‘normal’ human woman who chooses to carry Gideon in her womb. Notably, the sample lives far beyond its point of expected viability, thus making the conception somewhat miraculous (“Only the sample was still active, no idea how considering it was twelve weeks after the fact” HTN 441). 

The Cuckold

Matthew 1:18-25

18 Now the birth of Jesus the [a]Messiah was as follows: when His mother Mary had been [b]betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to [c]send her away secretly. 

Gideon the First decides not to kill his lover, Wake, and releases her out the airlock (AND HE TOOK PITY ON ME! HE TOOK PITY ON ME! HE SAW ME AND HE TOOK PITY ON ME” from Harrow’s vision of Wake’s note, HTN 124) just as Joseph took pity on Mary, his betrothed, by deciding to divorce her quietly instead of making her infidelity public which would condemn her to death by public stoning (Deuteronomy 22:21). Gideon the First knew that Wake was pregnant and didn’t tell John because he thought the baby was his. Similarly, Joseph goes on to raise Jesus as his own son.

The Birth

Luke 2:7

And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a [f]manger, because there was no [g]room for them in the inn.

 Neither baby Jesus nor baby Gideon were given a proper cradle, one being laid to rest in a manger where the animals ate and the other stuffed in a transplant bio-container (GTN 23). 

The Dead Children

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.

King Herod intends to kill the prophesied King of the Jews and instead of finding the specific baby, he just has a bunch of them slaughtered. However, Jesus escapes the slaughter of the innocents by Herod when his parents secret him away to Egypt.

 When the great aunts gas the nursery and kill the 200, Gideon is meant to die along with them but escapes her fate.

Now this event has a completely different biblical connotation for Harrow. 

Firstly, the murder of the 200 children represents Original Sin. In the bible, Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, and as their descendants, all of humankind is doomed to also bear the weight of that sin from the moment we are born until the day we die. This is a fact that is drilled into Christians as soon as we’re able to understand it, we are born wretched and unworthy sinners, and there’s nothing we can do ourselves to fix that. 

“I have tried to dismantle you, Gideon Nav! The Ninth House poisoned you, we trod you underfoot—I took you to this killing field as my slave—you refuse to die, and you pity me! Strike me down. You’ve won. I’ve lived my whole wretched life at your mercy, yours alone, and God knows I deserve to die at your hand. You are my only friend. I am undone without you.”

Harrow is a multitude, she is 200 children, the entire future of her house. Shes not just one human being,, she’s the whole damn church.

Naz/Nav

he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Although Gideon is not from the Ninth, she is given the Ninth name Nav when she arrives as a baby. Similarly, Jesus is known as Jesus of Nazareth, though that is not where he was born.

The Poor Bondservant

Jesus' role as a servant is emphasized many times in the bible. He was a carpenter's son born in a stable 

Philippians 2:5-8

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

 Gideon is described as being made “a very small bondswoman” (GTN 24)

The Sword

Matthew 10:34

Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

The Wretched Sinner

Harrow is wretched, self loathing, and cruel. 

She is in thrall of the enemy of god, a figure who was once gods most favoured warrior, cast into hell.

She is like the depiction of the sinner who loves the devil

It's important to note that Harrow isn’t a single person, she is a multitude, the entire future of her people condensed into one body. 

The Enemy of God

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, nholding in his hand the key to othe bottomless pit1 and a great chain. 2 And he seized pthe dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and qbound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into othe pit, and shut it and rsealed it over him, so that she might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

Before the fall, Satan was described as a “guardian cherub” who resided in the garden with God (Ezekiel 28:14) 

(a funny aside, in the bible the devil is known as the great deceiver but in HTN Muir specifies that Alecto is incapable of lying)

A Life of Abuse 

Isaiah 53:3

"He was despised and rejected by mankind,

    a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.

Like one from whom people hide their faces

    he was despised, and we held him in low esteem”

They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff" (Luke 4:28–29).

Gideon lives a life of mockery and is abused by Harrow.

An Unlikely Savior

Despite the fact that Gideon does not fit the expected image of a Cavalier, Harrow chooses Gideon to be her sword and protector.

Despite the many openings Gideon has to make Harrow pay for the pain she caused her, she remains loyal to her

Trust

Harrow realizes that she cannot face the lyctor trials without Gideon, and places her trust in her

Christians are told they must place their trust in jesus in order to reach salvation

Purifying Water

Acts 2:38

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Harrow confesses her sins to Gideon and puts herself at her mercy

Gideon forgives Harrow totally and completely, she baptises her

One Flesh

Mark 10:8

and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.

“The imagery and symbolism of marriage is applied to Christ and the body of believers known as the church. The church is comprised of those who have trusted in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and have received eternal life. Christ, the Bridegroom, has sacrificially and lovingly chosen the church to be His bride” (x)

Ephesians 5:25-26

They take the vow of necro and cav, one flesh one end

Gideon’s forgiveness of Harrow is reaffirmed

Harrow risks her life to stay and fight with Gideon, even if it means her death and thus the destruction of her death. Her love for Gideon is now greater than her love for the Body.

The Sacrifice

John 19:34

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.

They will look on the one they have pierced'" (John 19:36–37).

Gideon chooses to die for Harrow, death by piercing

and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

In order to complete the lyctor process, Harrow both physically and spiritually consumes Gideon

Because of Gideon’s sacrifice, Harrow attains eternal life at the right hand of god

The Tomb

The Resurrection

1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus

Harrow turns her body into a tomb for Gideon, a tomb fashioned after that on the Ninth

Resurrection on the Third Day

Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:46-47 

“So many months had passed: and yet, at the same time, she had only lost Gideon Nav three days ago. It was the morning of the third day in a universe without her cavalier: it was the morning of the third day—and all the back of her brain could say, in exquisite agonies of amazement, was: She is dead. I will never see her again.” (HTN 374)

Just in case you missed this important piece of information, Muir repeats it three times.

2. Have you ever done a photo shoot, professional or non? I’ve had pictures taken at photo studios and I have a cousin who’s a photographer that did my college graduation photos.

3. If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and why? I mean, nowhere right now. BUT, there’s a lot of places I’d love to visit one day. Various countries and places here in the US. I just want to be able to travel a lot one day.

It’s small and has way too much stuff. For one thing, there’s giraffe stuffed animals all over, including a 4 ft one in the corner. There’s a dresser by the window that has my TV and Christmas decorations on it. To the right of that is a 6-cube shelf with some of the aforementioned giraffe stuffed animals as well as giraffe knickknacks, some coloring books and coloring supplies, a mini Christmas tree on top, a few more giraffe stuffed animals, a nice picture frame with my dog, Brandie, who passed away, and my BB8 droid I made at Disneyland. Above the shelf is an I Love Lucy wall clock. My closest is nearby and is full of medical supplies, 3-drawer file thing with random stuff I insist on holding onto, my shoes, and all my jackets and sweatshirts. To the left of my dresser is my bookshelf with a lot of books and other figurines and knickknacks of various things I like and hey surprise, surprise, more giraffe stuffed animals! Across from the bookshelf and dresser is my bed, which is also my desk cause I keep my laptop on it, my chargers, my phone, a coloring book, a couple packs of colored pencils, my Bible study stuff, my remotes, and my Nintendo Switch. I have a pile of clothes, too, cause dresser and closet are too full. I have like 8 throw pillows, a body pillow, a back pillow, and a couple actual pillows. I have a few stuffed animals that sit on my bed as well, which are a huge squishmallow giraffe, a small squishmallow pug, a small squishmallow Dumbo, a small squishmallow Baby Yoda/Grogu, and a Baby Yoda/Grogu plushie. To the right of my bed is a TV tray that has my bottles of water, my medicine and pill crusher, a box of straws, a glass, a Starbucks Doubleshot energy drink, chapstick, my wallet, a Zip-loc bag with half a glazed donut and half a chocolate one, and a small bag of shortbread cookies. Behind the TV tray is my 3-drawer bedside table, which has a makeup storage thing on it that I plan on cleaning out and getting rid of cause I don’t wear makeup anymore and could use that space for something else, a bottle of lotion, a couple little room sprays from B&BW, and a jewelry tray. Hung up on my walls around the room are a few giraffe framed paintings, a couple beachy canvas paintings, two Alexander Skarsgard calendars, a bulletin board with various stuff pinned to it, and a marker board. There’s also a hamper in here, a floor lamp, a ceiling fan/light, two fans, and an ottoman.

She’s spread very thin and works so hard and yeah I just could never thank her enough. She’s the absolute best and I would be so lost without her. I couldn’t keep going if it weren’t for her.

Jimin x Reader AU

Summary- Runaway *txt voice* . Jimin is a wandering time traveler meeting people from all times and breaking hearts all the same.

A/N- I’m going through a list of prompts, so here’s the first one shot  just dumb fluff and a mild plot. I hope you guys like it and if not tell me. Anyways I’m back and in quarantine/shelter in place so might as well write again. I love getting request and DMs. I hope you all stay safe and healthy

Chapter One 

“Give me something different from the world.” you laid your back on the chair holding on to the table and pushing back. Three papers due the next morning and you were drained of all the energy you didn’t know you possessed. How in the world were you going to do this again and again for the next four years in college. You thought your days of studying were gonna be over after high school, but how naive you were. Movie after movie told you that college would be a fun time to drink and party but the only party you went to was for orientation. Luckily you had gotten your own dorm away from any distractions and which you thought now may be the reason for your isolation. “I wish something could happen out of the ordinary.” You were well aware that you were foreshadowing something or at least hoped you were. Manifestation was said to work and at this point your level of procrastination allowed for you to be slightly delusional.

Park Jimin was a born time traveler. He wasn’t ever in one place for more than a week in fear of disrupting his timeline. He also wasn’t quite sure when he started wandering through time. If you asked him he might look away like he often did and tell you one day when he was little he wandered and found himself far away from his home. In reality Jimin doesn’t know much of his past, he tries to forget what he does remember and move on. When he sleeps on nights when the wind is cold and the clouds cry he can almost see his mother calling out for him. He will follow her voice until he is at the edge of the woods. When he’s lucky he can touch the trees and smell the soft scent of fall in the air, just as he begins to move to her he always wakes up. That night Jimin had seen her closer than he ever had and woke up in a thick sweat. He knew he had to leave the time he was in and move on. 

“Alright buddy, it's time for us to leave.” he hugged his small chick stuffed animal and put it in his pocket. The tavern was small and cramped, there were tapestries lining the wall and soft purple curtains covering the windows. The year was around fourteen hundred and he was in the royal court of one the kings of the time. It wasn't his first time posing as a noble and wouldn't be his last. He always left quietly and briskly in the night never saying goodbye. He was the lost lover of countless stories and lives but he never seemed to care. And so he opened the large door carved and shining in the dim light of the candle he held. In the hallway was the princess he had tricked into giving him a place to stay. He wasn’t heartless, and that’s why he always left in the cover of the dark.

“‪Jimin, what are you doing out this late?” Aurora was undoubtedly beautiful, he thought for sure the story “sleeping beauty” must have been inspired by her. He felt bad for once seeing how much she had grown attached to him in his short time in her court. 

“I- can’t stay?” It was as if he was asking a question to her hoping it was a good enough excuse.

“Please don’t go.” Her sweet soft eyes were watering and he could almost touch her pain in the air. “I love you.”

“I’m sorry. I need to start my life over.” He wasn’t lying 

“No please,” she ran over to him holding his hand in hers. “Stay here, we can make it all work.” Jimin looked down at her and felt guilty. He had led her on and given her an escape from the marriage she was bound to. 

“Please I just need to get something, I’ll be back.” She knew in her heart he was lying. She wasn’t foolish, she was smart and educated. And still she followed along with his clear lie.

“I will love you till the end of time, I would wait a million years, say you’ll remember?”

With that Jimin let go of her hand and gave her a small peck on the cheek. “I will.”

He had to admit he wasn’t expecting that and he would remember that. He walked out the hallway and outside letting the rain encompass him and let his mind take him.

Three am was when you finished all the papers. You were so tired you could almost cry. It was pouring outside which meant in four hours when you had to leave for class you would need an umbrella and of course you didn’t have one of those. The skin care routine could wait tonight and you shut off all the lights and finally laid back in your bed. Just as your eyes closed you heard water fall on your floor.

“What the fuck” you whispered being angry you had a mess to clean. “Why do I always leave shit on the ledges where they can fall?” You turned on your lamp sitting up. You rubbed your eyes and turned around. First you saw shoes, old ones at that, and then you realized said shoes had legs attached to them. You closed your eyes and said a small prayer in your mind hoping they’d be gone when you opened your eyes.

And then you screamed.

Jimin planted his feet on a hardwood surface. He knew he had to be in more modern times by the cool air in the room. He let out a nice calm sigh and then he noticed the lights turn on and a girl scream. “Fuck, Fuck,” he ran over to cover your mouth “shhhhhh, calm down” 

With the stranger's hand on your mouth you began to cry and bit him. “What do you want? How the fuck did you get in here? Please don’t kill me, I’m too young to die.” Jimin let out a Yelp at your attack.

“Jesus, I’m not here to kill you. And if you wouldn’t mind I’d love to leave.” He turned around and headed for the door.

“Stop,” you called out grabbing your phone. “Why are you in my room?” 

“Trust me I didn’t mean to be here.” He turned around facing you. To be completely shallow for a moment you were taken aback by his looks. He looked unreal, handsome and beautiful all at once. 

“Then why are you?” You stood up still holding your phone in case you needed to call for help, as beautiful as he may be it didn’t mean he wasn’t a serial killer.

“You don’t want to know.” Jimin was feeling reckless and sad. He didn’t need another connection and his judgment was clouded by his encounter.

“Tell me or else I’m just gonna call the cops.” 

“You want the truth?” He asked, raising his voice slightly making you pull back a little, gripping your phone tighter.

“I want to know why the fuck there is a stranger in my dorm, so yeah I do.” 

“You wouldn’t believe me even if I told you the truth.” He looked like a prince in his dated attire, you didn’t know if you were creeped out or intrigued.

“Why do you look like you stepped out of a painting” Jimin looked down at his soaked puffy sleeve.

“I guess I almost did,” he chuckled. “What would you say if I told you I’m not from here. Better what would you think if I’m not from this time or any time?” He stepped closer to you 

“I would ask what you were on and if I could have some of whatever it was.” You felt safe, this made you feel delusional and stupid but there you were sitting back on your bed.

“Nothing. I’m on nothing.” It made Jimin more sad confirming that no one would believe him.

“Yeah I think this is a dream, nice and all. Must I say my mind really does create beautiful people.” You pulled the covers over your head and closed your eyes.

“What’s your name anyways?” You asked mentally check out.

“Jimin, my name's Jimin.” He walked closer to you taking in your features. You seemed so peaceful. 

“I got to say this is some crackhead sleep paralysis demon, ain’t nobody doing it like me. My name is y/n Jimin you can spend the night my dear sleep paralysis demon.”

Jimin laughed and laid down on the floor still wet. He soon fell asleep to the sounds of you snoring. 

You didn’t set your alarm and so you slept until nine. You woke up and rubbed your eyes sitting up and letting out a long yawn. Cracking your knuckles and moving your feet to the ground. 

Jimin woke up to the ear breaking sound of your scream.

“Who the fuck are you?” You were holding your lamp as if it were a bat. “Get the fuck out.”

“Aish, Jesus it’s too early for this.” Jimin stood up grabbing his bag and heading for the door. He put his hand on the knob and turned around. “I told you, you wouldn’t believe me.” And with that he walked out the door. 

You put on your glasses and put down the lamp. Your mind was going a mile a minute wondering what had possessed you not to call the police. You put on a sweater and ran after the man that was just in your room. 

Jimin pressed the elevator button. Admittedly it had been a long night and he had to figure out where he was and more importantly where he was gonna stay. It was ten times harder to fly under the radar in the future. There were cameras and events everywhere. He couldn’t be in two photos at once. He felt your hand on his wrist and turned around.

“Who are you.” You looked deep into his eyes looking for an answer. “Tell me why you came to me and don’t just leave.”

“I already told you.” He put his other hand on your shoulder.

“You’re not some bullshit time traveler.” You let go of his wrist breaking the moment.

“I am.” The elevator opened and he stepped in, pressing lobby. The doors began to close and just as he thought he finished with you, your hand stopped the doors. You walked in.

The doors closed and he let out a long sigh.

“So you can travel time.”

“It’s almost like I told you this.” he snapped back

“Damn, okay. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.”

“That someone had someone's feet in their face. And someone screams at them again. So yeah someones a little pissed.”

“Say someone again.”

“Someone.”

You were so ready to get out of the swing of things that you could stupidly befriend your intruder. A pretty twisted Stockholm syndrome in the making.  The doors of the elevator opened and Jimin went in front of you.

“What do you want from me?” he asked more frankly than you thought he should’ve.

“Hey, I’m the one asking questions here. I didn’t sneak into someone's house last night and then claim to be a time traveler.”

“Say someone again.”

“Someone- wait no don’t distract me.”

“I don’t want you to follow me around. God are you stupid?” he speed walked forward leaving you a couple feet behind before you.

“Whatever, lier you can be all alone in your schizophrenic delusion.” 

Jimin turned around. He didn’t know what it was about your statement that triggered something in him. He had nothing to prove to you or anyone for that matter. But in that moment he needed you to know he wasn’t a liar. Maybe it was the fact that he had never told anyone before and after having it fall out yesterday the last thing he wanted was someone telling him what he was saying was fake. 

“I’m not a liar.” he whispered. He walked back to where you were standing staring you down. 

“Prove it crazy.” 

Jimin grabbed your arm and all you saw was black. It must have been less than a second but you felt suspended in the air for an indescribable time. 

“Do you believe me now?” Jimin gave you a devilish smile motioning to your surroundings. 

“How in the fuck- I where- Bro- bring me back-” he covered your mouth and shuttled  you into a corner.

“Shh y/n. You’re gonna ruin someone's life if you’re not careful.”

1. Rosehip tea: Which book did you love when you were younger? 

It’s a book called The Comic Book Kid and it’s super cheesy and pretty wild, but it’s a precious book to me because my sister has dyslexia and hated reading but would LOVE when I’d read aloud to her. It was always that book. And we read it over and over and over. 

 2. Oolong tea: Which book series could you read again? 

Percy Jackson or Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. 

 3. Rooibos: What is one of you favourite books? 

A book called Thr3e by Ted Dekker. It’s a thriller and...HOO BOY THAT TWIST.

4. Strawberry tea: Tell me about your first kiss, if you had one. 

I wish you could see the grimace on my face. I was forced into a corner in the high school hallway of building 05 and I was peer-pressured into kissing my then-boyfriend. He was an ass. See below for more details sksksk. 

5. Apple tea: Tell me about your first break up, if you had one. 

Same guy as above sexually harrassed/abused/assaulted me for years and then finally I meekly asked my parents for help after he’d forced me into an engagement. I showed up at his house, shoved a ring back at him, said I wanted out, and when he asked me inside to talk about it I walked back to my dad and new kitten and changed my life for the better. 

6. Earl Grey: Which countries have you visited? 

Germany, Italy, Hungary, France! I did have a layover in Iceland but I don’t think that counts haha. Also technically, I lived in Germany. 

 7. Chai: Where do you want to travel next? 

Either Japan because I would love to see the temples or Israel to go back to my roots and see some of my family! 

8. Darjeeling: What languages do you speak? 

Fluently- English and French. I also speak some German, Spanish, and Japanese.

9. Hop tea: Do you have a favourite tea? Which one? 

I am a sucker for peach tea. I have a peach problem.

Difficult here because I promised my ailing dad I’d see it with him but I also would be the happiest man alive to take @disasterbikirito​ with me. 

11. Nettle tea: Are you jealous on a person? Why? 

Extremely. I won’t say who. But their parent is so loving of them being trans and I long for that so badly I feel sick some days.

Mr. disasterbikirito. Because he’s the love of my life and corona is keeping us very far apart and I feel homesick for him.

That cheap VO5 stuff but I mix it with something called City Detox by Aloette.

Not one particular song, but Panic! at the Disco songs remind me of an ugly breakup because my partner at the time really loved Panic and would play it after we made up from a fight.

The first one I can RECALL is the Veggietales movie Jonah. If that doesn’t count, I want to say Finding Nemo. Because both scared the shit out of me as a kid for the *exact same reasons.* (I have a very intense fear of being swallowed/in something’s mouth don’t...don’t ask).

When I was a very very young child, I lived out in Kansas in the US. My mom woke me up one night and scooped me up in her arms and took me outside to catch fireflies with me. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories.

I don’t personally have pets but I’m in weird college phase where I both have moved out and live at home still so my parents have two kitties named Angel and Sock and they’re sweeties.

Ahhhh! Back up in my room I have a jar filled up with foreign currency- some of which is no longer in use! I didn’t collect it all myself but various people have given me foreign coins and I treasure them not for worth but for the thought of them coming from somewhere else.

I brought a narwhal named Tyrone with me to my parents house. Back in my room, I have a strawberry bread loaf cat (Strawberry Blonde), a pudding cat by @chibinekoichi (Strawberry Purrfect!), a big blue Yoshi, and a little Bananya my mom gave me because “it looked like anime.”

“Caoutchouc.” Look at it. Look at that word. I love it. Ahhh.

A vent piece about a not so talked about side of Autism and something I’m struggling with lately. Angsty.

John awoke to the lovely sound of his alarm clock softly singing the Adventures of Winnie the Pooh theme song. He couldn’t help but to smile and hum along as the lull of sleep faded away from his eyes.

He let it play it’s tune as he stretched out his limbs, an array of cracks and creaks echoing through the empty room. With a big yawn, he sat up and pressed a button on the alarm, shaped like the silly old bear’s head. John let out a content sigh, looking around his bed at all his stuffed animals strewn about chaotically. He wondered if they all slept well as he did.

With a bit of effort, he got out of bed and wobbled over to his bathroom, rubbing eyes and yawning some more. After a quick trip to the loo, he set out on washing his mouth. His toothbrush was bright pink with hello kitty on the handle. It wasn’t his first choice, but he was quite fond of the cat too. With a strawberry flavored toothpaste, mint tasting way too strong, he brushed his teeth, a task he didn’t like to do.

Spitting into the sink, he rinsed his mouth, his head bobbing back up into place. He caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. Wrinkles on his forehead. Grey growing well past his temples. John quickly exited the bathroom, his stomach grumbling, hopefully from hunger and not embarrassment.

He put on his house slippers, Mickey Mouse of course, and hurried over to the kitchen, ready to prepare himself the same breakfast he’s had for nearly 40 years. Cheese on toast with a cup of milk. Even after decades, the staple food never grew old.

John sung Part of Your World quietly to himself as he slapped on a slice of cheddar onto the toast simmering in the pan, a smile tweaking at his lips. He found breakfast to be one of the high points of his day. It was the few parts of a regular day he had all to himself. No one to bother him. No expectations. Just him and his toys to keep him company until the afternoon. He laughed when his voice cracked at the climax of the song.

With a plate of warm toast and a cold cup of milk in hand, John went to the living room, setting everything down on the floor before turning on his telly. Saturday morning cartoons were on. He heavily preferred his Disney VHS’s to whatever the BBC was playing, but the cartoons weren’t half bad. Munching on his toast, he happily rocked as he watched.

It was 11am when the phone rang. John frowned, not wanting to set down his Legos. He was very much enjoying lining them up for the 4th time in a row. He was working with just the animal Legos this morning, something he didn’t do often.

Pouting, John got up to grab the phone, mumbling a somewhat pleasant “Hello?”

“Deacy!” an excited Roger screeched on the other end of the phone. John cringed at how loud the blond was.

“Oh, hi, Roger.”

“Mornin’ John! Hey, me and Brian were getting together this evening. There’s this new restaurant that just opened up. Imported wines. A live band. Sophisticated as all hell. You want to come?”

John’s nose crinkled up the more Roger talked. Nasty wine? Weird unpredictable food? Music he didn’t care for? And a suit and tie requirement? No thanks.

“That sounds stuffy,” John said honestly.

“You could use some stuffy in your life, mate. Come on. You can bring some of your fluffy friends if you’d like,” Roger said, a pleading lilt in his voice.

John shrugged to himself, a hand going into his hair to pull out a few strands, a nervous habit of his. “I don’t know. It sounds um…” Adult-y. “Like a lot for me, you know. Maybe we can do brunch or something soon.”

“Ah, alright, Deaks. Don’t say I didn’t invite you!” Roger said, disappointment in his tone, not that John would catch it. It wasn’t obvious enough because Roger expected that answer. John was never fond of refined things. Roger still tried after all these years.

“Yeah. Sorry. Bye bye, Rog.”

“Bye, John.”

John hung up, an anxious hand rubbing his chest. He tried to stop the bad thoughts that started to bubble in his head by throwing himself back into lining up his Legos, but it didn’t work.

He tried lining up his plushies on his bed, but the thoughts started to drip like cement into his chest.

He tried watching Snow White, but the thoughts began to feel like spider webs and char in his lungs.

He broke down, running into his bathroom, the quietest and darkest place in his house, slamming the door shut behind him.

Curled up on the cold tiles, as the tears began to pour down his face, his brain assaulted him with words.

Delayed.

Spaz.

Man-child.

Retard.

Delayed.

Stupid.

Lagging.

Delayed.

Delayed.

Delayed.

John sobbed, his hands flying to either side of his head, hitting himself to make his thoughts go back to normal.

You’ve got the brain of a 10-year-old stuck in a 39-year old’s body. It’s pathetic.

The people around you only pity you.

You’re not a failure to launch. You’re a failure to thrive.

It was cute when you were 19. Now you just look pitiful.

John pressed his forehead to the floor, his chest aching with how hard he was crying. As more and more painful truths vomited themselves into his mind, he could only sink under their weight.

He tried to ignore it. And for a long time, it was easy to ignore. The words the therapist said to him.

“You’re developmentally delayed, John. You might not ever catch up. You might be stuck at a certain developmental age.”

At 15, it’s not too noticeable. 20, people just think you’re not one to take yourself too seriously. At 30, there must be something wrong with you. At 40, you’re a lost cause. A burden. On society, your friends and family and more importantly, yourself.

And despite what anyone said, it was true. John looked like an adult, but he didn’t have much going on upstairs. He couldn’t talk taxes or even pay his own. Doing laundry was always meltdown worthy. Wine tasted gross. The word sex made him giggle and the act was unimaginable. McDonald happy meals were a real treat and toys were rewards.

No matter how much the people around him said otherwise, he was a child. And it killed him. It hurt. The lack of maturity was blinding. The delay unable to be hidden. He was a walking freakshow and despite his best efforts, he was thoroughly stunted.

He wanted to be like his friends. So badly. Go to clubs with Freddie and not feel scared. Drink with Roger and not gag at the first sip and order a soda instead. Hell, he’d take sleazing around like Brian if it meant he’d be a real man.

But he was just a little boy. Trapped in a perpetual childhood that not even humiliation could wake him up from.

He liked the kid’s menus. And he liked watching Sesame Street. And he liked when his aides and carers came over and took over. He was a kid, through and through. It was only a shock because his body dare betray him by growing up, leaving his brain behind.

It wasn’t just embarrassing. It was isolating. He didn’t get along with adults. They didn’t understand him, and he didn’t understand them. It was a miracle the rest of Queen even tolerated him. He preferred children but one could see how bad of a look that was. So, who else did he have beside his Lego figures and his teddy bears?

His own mother coddled him, which felt both wonderful and shameful. He wasn’t a child. But he was. But he wasn’t.

John raked his fingers through his hair, tugging painfully at his scalp, his knees pulling up under him, a subconscious need to be small.

No therapist really understood the plight he went through. They all told him that it was okay. He was fine. Nothing to be ashamed about. But how easy was that to say when you weren’t a middle-aged man who needed a night light to sleep? Or a grown man afraid to cross the road without a real adult’s hand to hold?

Nobody understood. Their reassuring words fell flat when it came to the reality around him. John was delayed and the world looked down on him for that.

He was like Peter Pan without a safe place to run to, surrounded by other people who too could not grow up.

It hurt.

It hurt all the time.

Every time he colored a coloring book, he knew he should be drinking a beer besides a wife who was expecting another kid. He knew he should be ordering filet mignon rather than chicken nuggets. He knew he should be so much more and so much better than he was.

John laid flat on the floor; his eyes physically unable to produce more tears. With all those thoughts jabbing at his skull, all he could do was throw himself to the floor and cry like a child. Even knowing he wanted more for himself, he couldn’t get up and do it.

He sniffled and hiccupped, his head pounding from how deeply he had been wailing.

All of these thoughts were too much for a child. Too big and scary. Complex and refined.

He sat up and slowly got up, his knees cracking as he did so. Without another whimper he went back to his room, crawling underneath his blankets, into the embrace of many furry friends. He closed his eyes, hugging a purple elephant to himself and prayed he’d be finally big tomorrow. An adult. All caught up. A prayer he’d been reciting for years.

He brought the elephant to his face, nuzzling the soft fabric. He wondered if the elephant would take a nap with him too.

What Rhymes With “AIR”?

1. Are the walls of your room bare or do you have things hanging up there? I have some things on the wall, yes. A few paintings, Audrey Hepburn wall decors, and a poster of Nam Joo Hyuk. I used to have wrestling posters but my mom, ever the control freak, removed them because she didn’t like them. Sigh.

2. When’s the last time you went outside to enjoy the fresh air? I went out this morning to take Cooper to the vet for his anti-rabies shot. I didn’t necessarily do it to enjoy the fresh air, but that came along with the experience as well anyway.

3. Do you watch the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? I started watching it this month actually! It’s super fun and Will Smith’s physical comedy is hilarious, but it isn’t really the type of show I’d binge-watch given how old the jokes and some of the tropes already are. I definitely don’t dislike it, but I just take longer to watch the episodes.

4. When’s the last time it felt like you were walking on air? Sunday, when I had my virtual grad and found out my parents and aunt and uncle got all my favorite food delivered to the house :) We had baked sushi, baked samgyeopsal, Pancit Malabon, and pichi-pichi that day, aaaaahhhhhh.

5. Have you ever been on air, on a radio station? Very briefly. One of our field trips in high school was a visit to a major broadcasting network, and we we were brought to their AM radio studio. The broadcaster on air at the time – one of my favorites of all time – welcomed us and gave us a chance to say hi on air.

6. Have you ever felt like all of the air was coming out of your lungs? Sure, but I guess it’s more accurate to say that I’ve occasionally felt the sensation of my chest increasingly tightening.

7. Has it seemed as though anything has ever disappeared into thin air? Have you ever pulled an idea out of thin air? The first one, yes. I have this stupid ability to drop a certain thing and have it disappear forever; I hate that it happens to me all the time lol. 

I can relate with the second situation as well; when I was still in school and had to write essays, reaction papers, anything of the sort, I’d wait till the last possible minute to start working on it since it’s by then that the good ideas start pouring in.

8. Have you ever wanted to be on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”? Sure. I’ve enjoyed trivia for as long as I can remember, so the show has always been right up my alley.

9. Do you know a billionaire in real life? No. I know a loooot of CEO kids, kids of MNC owners/executives, and kids of political dynasties though...comes with the environment I grew up in and the schools I went to.

10. Would you like to be an heir or heiress to a fortune? I wouldn’t say no to that.

11. Would you be able to successfully get away if you ever came across a bear? The one thing I keep hearing is to stay very still, so I’d be doing my best to do just that. I got no other survival skills though and if there’s apparently anything more that needs to be done during a bear encounter, then I don’t know of them.

12. Where’s your favorite place to go? How long does it take to get there? Hmm I’ve loved going to many places. My favorite vacation spots so far have been Sagada - that’s a 15, 16-hour road trip from Manila; Vigan - 8-hour road trip; and Palawan - an hour or so plane ride from Manila. If we’re taking nearby places, I like going to coffee shops to unwind and have a pastry or two. I don’t have a favorite one; I just go to whichever one’s the nearest to me at the moment.

13. How often do you err on the side of caution? I keep it at a healthy 50/50. There are times I’m okay with taking a big leap, but if I’m not super invested in something anyway and/or if there’s not a lot in it for me, I play it safe.

14. How often do people say they’re angry with you? My life revolves around being a (very cautious) people pleaser and making sure I don’t piss off people. The only people who have told me they’re angry with me are my mom and girlfriend.

15. Do you own any long underwear? I have never heard of these until today. I’d love to live somewhere so cold I need to wear clothes specifically meant to be worn underneath my actual outfit lol

16. How much Tupperware do you own? I’m Filipino, man. Filipino moms practically make it their life’s mission to collect as many Tupperware containers as they can. I’m pretty sure we have a bunch that we didn’t even own to begin with - just magically ended up in our cupboard after all the parties and gatherings we’ve had hahaha.

17. What color is your underwear right now? Green.

18. Do you still sleep with a teddy bear? I never slept with stuffed animals; I preferred pillows.

19. What pair of your shoes has the most wear and tear? In my first year of college the only shoes I owned was a pair of Keds. Used it for everything and it unsurprisingly ended up being super worn out - soles got detached from the shoe and all that. I think we still have it here at home – still destroyed – but it’s been untouched for a while.

20. Do you like to play Solitaire? It was a great boredom buster game for me for a time, especially when phone apps weren’t all that expansive yet. I haven’t played it in many months though.

21. Do you or your family own a full set of silverware? We do.

22. What do you have to take everywhere with you? Phone, wallet, car and house keys. Because of school I’ve also developed a habit of accidentally bringing my laptop nearly everywhere I go – I brought it to the vet once, lol

23. Would you like to visit Delaware? Yes. Delaware actually stands out in my memory because I remember reading in a kids’ almanac many years ago that it was the first to become a US state. Ever since then I’ve kinda bookmarked the place in my head.

24. Last time you received dental care? December. My tooth had been hurting for a couple of months but it became absolutely unbearable by that month so I had to book an emergency appointment days before Christmas. I felt super bad for the hassled dentist (who doubles as a family friend, which made it more embarrassing)... but at that point I was crying myself to sleep every night and would wake up at 3 AM crying in pain, and I would’ve done anything for the toothache to go away. 

25. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Somewhere brutally cold.

26. Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? I’ve never been able to relate to this question, lol soz.

27. Are you satisfied sitting here, taking this survey, or would you rather be elsewhere? I’m satisfied for now. I found more potential leads when it came to job-hunting and I’m not feeling too anxious anymore. I’ve been so focused on looking for corporate communications/PR jobs in the private sector that I forgot about the possibility of applying my skills in something I’m even more passionate about - museums! We have a few government agencies focused on museums, culture, and the arts and I definitely see myself performing in the jobs they offer. It’s even better because it’ll help me get my foot in the door in government positions, and as someone who’s indecisive about law it’ll be a great bridge to start with. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

28. Last time you sat in a barber’s chair? Early March.

29. Do you own any cans of compressed air? I’m not sure...had to look that up. Maybe we do? Idk. Dad will sometimes hoard random grownup stuff from the hardware store so I’m not ruling this one out.

But I also feel like if I moved there immediately it would be such a culture shock in terms of the weather, culture, how far away I am from family, etc. and I doubt I would cope well. I suppose I can move to either Vietnam or Singapore first, as kind of like a baby step.

42.   What is something in your home that needs to be repaired? One of the stovetop burners stopped working last night and my dad’s determined to fix that.

43.   What kind of sleepwear do you own? I go to bed in just my normal home clothes; I don’t change to anything else.

51.   How often do you have a nightmare? Not very. They only show up when I’m going through a depression. My last nightmare was two or so years ago.

56.   When’s the last time one of your senses were impaired? From what? My left eye still gets irritated from time to time. We never really found out what’s wrong with it; my first checkup happened on the day before lockdown, so we never got to go back. When it starts to act up, I usually have no choice but to wait for it to go away.

57.   Have you ever been in a hot air balloon before? No. I’ve been to hot air balloon festivals though. That’s enough for me haha; I’m not desiring to be in one and be up in the sky.

58.   Do you have a good health care plan? My parents do for us kids.

61.   Do you own any types of eyewear? I’ve worn a pair of glasses since I was 11. I had needed them much earlier but my mom always thought I was being a sissy and just ‘wanted’ glasses to fit in with other kids. It was such a stupid mindset, and it was so stupid of her to not believe her kid WHO WAS STARTING TO NOT SEE. It was only when I took an eye exam at the school clinic and the school wrote her a letter that she finally believed me, but I had been suffering for a while and could barely read the chalkboard for like two years, which definitely affected my grades. 

62.   What brand of cookware do you have a lot of? Not sure about brands.

64.   Have you ever worked in a childcare center? I haven’t.

65.   Do you have a “beware of dog” sign on your gate? Nah. I usually say it myself. Kimi never got used to strangers.

It wasn’t daycare per se but some malls used to have play areas/centers and my mom used to drop me off in those while she ran errands for a few hours. Those aren’t too common nowadays because I guess it’s more dangerous to leave your kids now, even with attendants, but they were a fun part of my childhood.

67.   Are you very aware of your surroundings? I’m honestly a little ditzy so no. I always need a more responsible, more street smart friend by my side especially when I’m going somewhere unfamiliar.

68. Have you ever had an au pair or a nanny before? We used to have househelp, but we never saw them as nannies. A vast majority of them never met my mom’s (extremely high) expectations and quit in a few weeks or months, sometimes even days; the few ones who did eventually wanted better lives for themselves and resigned after a few years, which we didn’t stop them from doing. At some point my mom gave up having help around and realized that ultimately, she’d rather clean up and do chores her way.

69. Do you know anyone who has had an affair? Yes.

70. How much are you willing to spend on airfare? I’ve never bought my own ticket so I don’t know how much they’re supposed to be on average...but I imagine I’m willing to pay a lot of money if it means going to the destinations of my dreams.

71. Who do you care about the most? The friends that I count as family.

72. Are you more likely to choose truth or dare? Truth. I’m too shy to do dares and I’ve never had a problem telling the truth anyway.

74. Do you like the name Claire? Would you spell it with or without the I? I love it, it sounds elegant and graceful and it’s one of my favorite names. I prefer it with an I – I don’t know any Clares, actually.

76. What can be done to make life more fair? Ending world hunger and poverty and making education accessible for all. 

77. How much are you willing to spend on cab fare? Not much. Cab fares should be fair after all.

78. Do you have a lot of flair? To some extent, I guess. I’m certainly not dragging myself down haha.

80. Is there a glare on your computer screen right now? There isn’t.

81. When’s the last time someone glared at you? Sometime in the last week would be a safe guess. My mom will sometimes communicate through glares and I’ve picked up the habit from her as well.

82. What type of hair do you have? (color, length, texture, etc) How often do you wash it? It’s black, quite thick, a bit on the wavy side, and has a tendency to get frizzy when it’s humid. Length-wise, it currently reaches just my collarbones. After a rebonding disaster around a decade ago my hair got a bit dry and it never really recovered from that, so I need to wash my hair with a giant blob of conditioner every time I take a shower otherwise it would get dry and hard.

83. Do you know the difference between a rabbit and a hare? I know hares are larger, but that’s about it.

84. Do you like to eat eclairs? LOVE them.

85. What do you consider to be your lair? My car has served as my safety bubble for so many depressing days in college. That’s why I got a little heartbroken when my dad told me he might have plans to sell it to my aunt (his sister).

87. Have you ever used Nair before? Did it work? I used Veet in middle school when razors still scared me. It worked, but it took a whiiiiile and sometimes it wouldn’t even take all the hair off, so eventually I just started shaving.

89. What is something that you own a pair of? Dogs. 

90. What is a rare quality that you have? Other people will have to answer that. They’re the ones who see me and get to decide what’s rare about me.

When I get bored, I will literally take inventory of everything I own. All of my books, my DVDs, etc. Not entirely sure where the urge comes from.

1. Rosehip tea: Which book did you love when you were younger? Okay, I don’t know if anyone here remembers the Hank the Cowdog series. It was so wild. Hank is a mutt who lives on a ranch in Texas and acts like he’s the goddamn sheriff, but he gets into all these hilarious situations. He even has a “deputy” named Drover who is like the Barney Fife to his Andy Griffith. I’m probably dating myself here, but this was probably the first series that helped me have a sense of humor.  

2. Oolong tea: Which book series could you read again? Probably Hank the Cowdog! LOL I mean, it would be interesting to read as an adult. I would also read the Time Quintet by Madaleine L’engle again, which I have. Yes, A Wrinkle in Time is the first book in quintet of books! Same characters, too! The book Many Waters is about the twins jumping back into time before the Great Flood and it’s my favorite one. 

3. Rooibos: What is one of you favourite books? Oh man, I really can’t pick one. I love The Hobbit. Dune. All of Joe Hill’s books (The Fireman is sooo goood! Mr. Hill, please cast Philip Glenister as the Fireman if there’s a series of the book because he is a perfect fit and picturing him as such made the book even better). My favorite Seuss is “Horton Hatches the Egg.” It’s a lot of fun to read aloud, too. I could go on and on about my favorite books because I don’t have just one I love!

4. Strawberry tea: Tell me about your first kiss, if you had one. First cheek kiss was 3rd grade (8 years old) his name was Kyle. First one on the lips from my first boyfriend at 13 (omg boyfriend, that’s cute) and his name was Daniel and it was gross.

Even it seems that the life in it goes bit differently from any other cities, but from small Old town streets to Jewish district and to beautiful cemeteries everything makes me so happy there.
