I am very glad that you actually responded and given me an actual advice since I was worried about the question I sent you.

Though besides that I have another question for you (hoorayyy)!

So, about the reading books earlier- I’m fortunately a bookworm too! It’s just that I notice I prefer reading the genre science fiction/psychological horror more than… anything else!

And while the books I am currently reading, ‘Flowers For Algernon’ and ‘I’m Thinking Of Ending Things’ (these books are seriously so wonderfully made they make want to tear my walls), DO have romantic aspects of it- it’s not really the main plot of the story..

‘Flowers For Algernon’ has amazing storytelling and is very unique- though I’m not sure if you’ve read it before but, it’s actually just the main character taking notes. Hence why there was a lot misspellings which honestly makes it a great touch if you know the context behind it.

On the other hand, ‘I’m Thinking Of Ending Things’ too shares the same uniqueness as the other, possibly even more unique if I must say so myself. Though I REALLY don’t want to make my story similar to them since I want to make it more heart warming than fucked up..

Which is why I feel like I have the need to borrow or buy at least one romantic book because, I lack of it. I mean I accidentally borrowed it one time but it was kind of disappointing.

I don’t know if its a good idea and if I should do it or not since does it really matter of the genre, or just the writing?

Still, if you have any good books that are in the romance genre. Feel free to recommend some to me!

i actually don't have any straight up romance recs - i don't actively search it out (outside of fanfic), so any romance i read just comes with whatever book i've picked up. just straight up romance bores me, unless its a fic with a pairing i actively like. and even then, i need to take breaks from it unless the romance is interspersed with an actual plot. im not a romantically-geared person! i dont have single Main Plot Is Romance book on my shelves!

but imo its really just the quality of writing that helps. ive never been in a romance, im the child of two different divorces, and yet ive been told that i write romance fairly well. go fuckin figure lmao.

so actually my advice on romance is to just like. wow idk what i do is pick apart the romances i see on tv / in writing. what makes them good together, how do they act around each other, what are their love languages, what's their dynamic, what traditional romance things do they partake in, what dont they partake in, do they have anything nontraditional, do they work and why do / they dont they - does that make their relationship more interesting or is it flat. are they a good match.

you don't have to have every answer, but ive found that at least understanding their characters / dynamics, and having them interact in a way that suits them will help your romance feel natural. dont conform to tropes or tradition, that will just make the relationship flat and unrealistic. and you can always sprinkle in little things that you like / would like, which will help ground the romance and get you into the groove

tldr with romance, i think it's better to observe real life (whether that's paying attention to couples or reading reddit threads) & analyze in-love or in-a-relationship characters instead of just reading romance novels. bc honestly, and from what i can tell, they can tend to be over the top or cookie cutter

#another thing i like to do is analyze bad fictional relationships / ones i dont like #both bc it gives me a concise argument / explanation if someone gets on me about it #and bc it helps me understand what makes good romances Good #bc bad relationships make me sit there and ask 'well. what went wrong here? why dont they work? why do i hate this? whats Missing?'#and filling in those gaps teaches me what Does work. what will go Right. why i Love it. what Is there.#sometimes the answer is simply bad writing & after taking a deeper look #i can conclude they they Are good for each other - the show/book just shoved them together with no reason other than #'need romance' or 'boy meet girl' or 'love at first sight'#i mean there are some romances that i look at it and im like 'wow! this should not be happening!'#but i Like it because its interesting enough! a good example is aline & the darkling from the grishaverse #such a fucking unhealthy relationship. really well written. fascinating. hot as hell. important for the story/characters.#i wanted to rip them apart but also glue them together to see how horrible the train crash would be!!!!#absolutely unprompted #so i mean... i think i can rec books that Have good romances in them? but thats not the focus by any means #lemme know... i know im less helpful this time around but i hope im helping a little!#feel free to ask as many questions as you like - ill do my best with all of them

i hate to make the cr thing sound like a dumb ship war but they canonically had beauregard confess to being in love with her best friend, the party member she was objectively closest to and had the best chemistry with, to whom she was the turning point for her entire major character arc, and then immediately walked it back to pair them up with the characters they flirted with in episode 1 and had no chemistry with. and then spent the rest of the series making arguably lesbiphobic jokes about it.

I think what makes ob. stand out to me as an otome game is that unlike a lot of otome casts, the love interests are inherently, drastically flawed, and you don't "fix" them. Like sure you help them understand themselves and each other better and give them a chance to show their best qualities, but they're never going to get over their flaws and shortcomings. They're just like that and that doesn't make them any less loveable. In fact it's part of what makes them so charming. They wouldn't be the same without their quirks.

None of them are the perfect guy who can give you the world on a golden platter... but they would try. And they don't expect MC to be perfect either. That's real love to me. (Major bonus points for a genderneutral MC too!)

#I also like that you don't have to pick just one guy and can play as platonically as you like #I don't have a vast amount of experience with otome games Ill be honest #they rarely actually pull me in either bcus the often male love interests don't appeal to me or the story isn't complex enough #and I don't mean that in a high brow looking down my nose snobby way #it just doesn't appeal bcus it doesnt provide what I captivates me #I do love romance as a side experience in rpgs or like strdew for example #but afaik most otome games feature the same kinda guy as standard romance novels yknow the like sexy ceo and famous idol and big buff jock #which yknow. valid. I do love a rich man myself.#but they're big league boys and often have highly attractive traits #and the conflict is generally external or if it is internal its overcome with some love and then its just #wow ur with a hot guy 💖💕💖💕💖💕💖#which bores me idk give me a complex annoying dude that I can love anyway #but those things are super popular for a reason Im just a dude with different taste #sunny speaks

a/n- should of been posted yesterday but oh well 🫠

i do some last minute cleansing and preparations as i get ready to start my year anew and fresh.

nick had invited a few friends over so we can celebrate our last hours of 2023 together.

i finish getting ready and put on my coat so i can head over to the house.

everyone arrived at various times but i was one of the first people to get there.

i’ve been friends with the triplets for about 7 years now, at first i met nick but he soon after introduced me to his brothers who i’ve been close with every since.

especially matt, matt is really like my best friend. since day one, matt & i have have a different type of connection where we understand each other on a different level

he’s always been there for me, as i have with him.

“hey!! happy new year” nick says as he opens the door to let me in

“happy new year!” i say while going in for a hug

“wow it’s been in a long year.” i continue

“tell me about it.. a lot has happened this year, from hitting 5 million subs to going on tour again.. it’s been a crazy year”

“yup, sad to see it end but ready to watch it go” i laugh

from the corner of my eye i can see chris coming up the stairs

“oh hey chris! happy new year” i say as i walk in for a hug

“yup! new year.” he greets back, “where’s the food?” he proceeds to ask

“chris shut up. it’s on the way, you can wait.” nick answers annoyingly

i chuckle at their banter

“where’s matt?” i ask out loud

“he’s probably in still his room getting ready, you can go check on him if you want” nick responds

i nod and make my way down the hall to his room.

i do my little signature knock that i do so he knows it’s me

“come in!” he shouts from the door

i open the door and walk in to give him a hug

“heyyy matt!!” i gleefully say

“why are you so happy?” he asks with a confused face

“cause it’s new year’s eve!!” i respond with more enthusiasm

“big plans for 2024?” he asks

“no plans, just hopes and wants.” i respond

“yeah? what do you hope and want?” he asks again

“i kinda hope for a genuine connection and relationship..” i say shyly

“really?”

“yeah. i just feel like im tired of meaningless flings or situationships. we’re only getting older.. i want something real” i say

“i feel you 100%” he reassures

“yeah.” i look down, “but anyway! do you have anything you’re looking forward too?”

“not really. i just wanna let the year play out how it’s supposed too.” he replies

“yeah i see th-“ im interrupted as the door swings open

“our friends are here. stop hiding in the room” says nick

“we’re not hiding” matt says as he gets up to make his way to the living room

i follow shortly behind

after a few hours of party games and jokes, we just hang around to enjoy our last few minutes of 2023

i go in the kitchen to grab some water and shortly after, matt follows along

he nervously stands there in silence for a bit pretending to be occupied before striking up a conversation

“before the year end i kinda just wanted to let you know that i really do appreciate our friendship” he says sentimentally

“aww matt, that’s so sweet.”

“i know i don’t really say it often but i do love you. maybe in more ways than i should to be honest.” he looks down

“huh? what do you mean?” i ask

“well you’re the person i can count on the most, other than nick and chris. you’re always there for me when i need you to be and i feel like i relate you on a deeper level. you just understand me as a person and i love and appreciate you a lot for it.”

i go in for a hug, “matt i love you so much! you’re gonna make me cry”

he hugs back but doesn’t seem fulfilled

“matt what’s wrong? you seem unfinished?” i ask still embraced in his grasp

“cause that’s not all i want to say. i just don’t know how to say it” he says

suddenly we hear our friends in the other room start the new year countdown

“well you better hurry before the new year begins” i chuckle

“six.. five” we hear from the other room

i stare up as he looks down at me with his mouth agape as he prepares himself

“two.. one-“

“i’m in love with you” he spills

“HAPPY NEW YEAR” i hear from the other room as i stare at him in silence

“this is probably the worst timing but i really couldn’t keep it in anymore. i can’t go into another year feeling regret for every day that i don’t confess to you how i fee-“

i break his monologue with a kiss

“i love too matt” i look up at him with a smile

“are you being serious?” his confused look making me chuckle

“yess matt. of course i do! like you said, i understand you on a deeper level. and i know you understand me just as well. i enjoy every second i spend with you and i love being around you, you always make me feel special. i also kept my feelings tucked in but i love you just as much” i confess

he smiles and places a kiss on my lips while placing both hands on each of my cheeks

“can i be your boyfriend, y/n?” he whispers into my lips as he holds my cheeks with both hands

“i’d love nothing more” i smile up at him

Fenrys’ POV

Chaol’s face looked surprisingly welcoming when Fenrys entered his bedroom’s antechamber.

“You have news from Aelin?”

Fenrys’ eyes sparkled. Straight to the point, as he liked it. “As a matter of fact, I do.”

“Did she like the gifts?”

“Well…” he picked on his nails, feigning nonchalance. “Her favorite one was a Cartier bracelet.”

“Interesting.” Chaol tilted his head, curious. “I don’t remember her following Cartier on Instagram in the research I did.”

He shrugged. “This just means someone else knows her better.”

“Your point is?”

“My point is that Aelin’s confused to why you agreed to this,” Fenrys lied. His point was actually to send these boys running, but he’d only ruin his agenda by disclosing it. “You either don’t want this, or you were definitely quick to forget about Dorian,” Fenrys not-so-subtly mentioned their scandalous affair.

The man’s face turned somber. “He was quick to forget about me too, wasn’t he?

“Wow.” Fenrys leaned on the wall, carefully trying to pick up on his cues. “So Aelin’s the next best thing, or you’re just trying to get to Dorian by chasing her?”

His jaw tightened. “Are you usually this indiscreet with people like me?”

“Not with people like you, no.” Fenrys looked at Chaol up and down, unafraid. “I’m more used to royal families, I didn’t know lords were so… touchy.”

If someone questioned him, Fenrys was just doing his job—protecting Aelin. She was currently being chased, without her consent, by two boys who, from the looks of it, were willing to marry this girl they couldn’t handle for a month when she was eighteen. Idiots, both of them.

Chaol sat on an armchair, legs crossed, but those tight eyes and flat lips failed to hide his anger. “I still don’t know why you’re here.”

To scare him away, though Fenrys was failing at that miserably. He scrambled his head for a new tactic.

“I…” he trailed, trying to buy some time. “The gifts.” Fenrys cleared his throat. “Aelin liked the Cartier bracelet better. You’re losing the gift battle.”

“And?”

“You’re actually my favorite in the courtship run, you know—“

“That’s hard to believe—“

“Shh. You are,” Fenrys lied, “I’m rooting for you. That’s why I’m suggesting you a new way to get her back, since you used to date.”

Chaol leaned back on his chair, finally interested. “Do tell.”

“Aelin likes her men with balls.”

“You don’t say.”

Fenrys narrowed his eyes at him. “Not literally.”

“What do you mean, then?”

“You could prove yourself to her in a duel.”

He’d face Dorian at the duel and give up on killing the man he loves. The shame of his surrender would send him flying back to Anielle. It was perfect. Fenrys came up with it in half a second, but it was flawless.

“A duel?! Isn’t the arranged marriage outdated enough?”

“She likes period romances.” Fenrys shrugged. “It’s the fastest way to her heart.”

“Nope.” Chaol got up, paced around his room for a second with both fists on his hands. “I’m not battling against Dorian. Not like this.”

Oh, fuck. Fenrys crossed his arms, keeping a smirk to hide his struggle. Think of something, think of something, think of something—

“Who told you the Cartier bracelet was from Dorian?”

It was, but Chaol didn’t need to know this.

The man’s eyes went wide. “Rowan,” he said in a pensive tone, low with realization. He paced a little more, frowning.

“A duel, really? That’s your best guess?”

Fenrys tsked, as if this was such a naïve question. “Do you know how often she rereads that Bridgerton book with the duel scene?”

“How often?”

“Often.”

Well, she did like Bridgerton, but Fenrys knew nothing about the series or if it had duel scenes. He was sure Chaol didn’t know either.

“Very well, then.” The man swallowed, not meeting the other’s eye. “Tell Rowan I’ll see him on Thursday at 7pm.”

“At Mala’s abandoned temple by the Florine?” Dorian asked, fiddling with his handcuffs at his own bedroom antechamber.

Fenrys gave him a curt nod, glad that he found the prince at a time no one was close to hear. “Rowan will meet you there.”

Now, it was time to tell Rowan about the two duels he had queued up.

Sakusa can be blunt, a little insensitive to others, and sometimes a jerk.

Especially when he has turned you down for the twentieth time.

Your teammates noticed that everything in the gymnasium was set up and ready for practice.

It was a clear sign that Sakusa had rejected you again.

Of course, you were far from Sakusa’s ideal type.

Who would like girls that are so persistent and do not tire?

As the captain of the Judo team, the team's male members always offered to go ‘teach’ that Sakusa bastard how to treat a lady right — quoted by them.

After hours of persuading and bribing, your teammates finally got you to let go of Sakusa.

Summer vacation was coming up, but competition season was around the corner, so no holidays.

A couple of schools have sent invitations to Itachiyama. Together with the vice-captain, the club advisors and coaches, they sorted out and invited them to join their summer training camp.

Now, with their new training regime and her friends occupying her, Sakusa was out of her mind, temporarily.

Sakusa noticed the absence of your presence in his life and…felt kind of empty.

He would sneakily walk past your classroom to see if you were there, but you were not there.

To be honest, he missed the times when you would excitedly greet him in the hallways, your poor attempts at making umeboshi onigiri or how she quickly lifted up his mood.

As much as he hated it, Sakusa went to Komori for some advice.

“Let me get his straight. When you see her, your heart races, your mood improves, and she makes you feel better. You definitely like her. After so many years, you finally just realised that you have feelings for her?” Sakusa just kept quiet and continued to stretch.

It was as if Komori could read his mind and decided to push Sakusa a little more.

“You know…I heard our school is inviting some schools to join their Judo training camp, and the guys are very interested in y/n.” Hearing that, Sakusa frowned and got up from his spot.

Komori lets out a laugh knowing that he has successfully made Sakusa understand his feelings and maybe evoke a little feeling of jealousy.

“Luckily, one of our top students of the cohort has offered to tutor her. He also came out with a schedule.” Their attention zoned to the name of the student who would tutor their precious daughter.

“Alright, study hard! Let’s go home!” Your father cheered while your mother apologised for his frivolous attitude.

You hurried your parents out of the staff room, only to bump into Sakusa.

After avoiding him for two weeks, it was a little awkward, and now he is your tutor; your thoughts are in a jumble. Just when you thought you got over him, he is, making your heart race again.

“Oh, do you have time now? I wanted to talk about the study sessions over the summer vacation.” You look at your parents, but they are giving you the thumbs-up.

So, for some privacy, Sakusa is leading you to the back of the school, near the school garden.

It was nerve-wracking to go to such a secluded place alone with your crush of ten years; your heart was beating so fast that it sounded like it was going to jump out of your ribcage.

While collecting yourself, Sakusa returned from the vending machine with drinks.

He got you coffee milk, your favourite drink.

“I heard from your club advisor that you were struggling with your studies, so I offered to help. You don’t mind…right?”

You spot the light blush over his cheeks and the nervous playing with his long fingers.

“Nope, I should thank you!” You smiled brightly at him, and that smile undoubtedly did something to his heart.

[*timeskip to summer training camp]

Sakusa was not going to go easy on you. You two have a very strict studying schedule, and Sakusa got to know you better.

It was just a coincidence that the judo and volleyball clubs have training camps the same week. This was good since, after morning practice, it will be a study session with him and another study session after dinner and bath.

“Stop staring at my face. Focus on the questions.” Sakusa taps your head with his pencil, and you pout at him.

“But, you have a handsome face that I just can’t stop staring at.” You joked and smiled at him.

Sakusa pulled up his mask and motioned for you to finish your questions.

Underneath his mask were his cheeks like tomatoes, blushing real hard after you playfully flirted with him.

Not even one question later, you were starting to be flirty with him.

“If I am in the top 10 for the next mock exam, can you go on a date with me?” You expected him to reject you, but he did the opposite.

“Sure, if only you get in the top 10. Now, focus.” He lightly flicks your forehead and looked away to hide the light blush across his cheeks.

God, this man, is he playing games with you?

Sakusa can feel the stares that he is getting from the Judo team and it is definitely not friendly. Instead of sitting with your team, you chose to sit with Sakusa, so that you can finish up your questions and go for extra practice with your coach.

“Also, can I meet you after your extra practice? I want to tell you something.” He asked and you almost choked on your rice.

He hands you the glass of water so you clear your throat.

“Okay, where do you wanna meet?”

“Near the school garden. See you later.” Sakusa got up and before he left, he lightly pats your head.

Sakusa Kiyoomi…just pat your head.

HE FREAKING PAT YOUR HEAD!

“Stay with us, captain!”

The summer night was not as cooling as you expected but it was still tolerable. Sakusa was sitting alone in the garden, seemingly deep in his thoughts. Your heart were racing as you approached him. Over the past weeks, he was more gentle, considerate and closer to you.

“Sakusa-san, did you wait long? Sorry, I had to take a bath before coming.” You sheepishly smiled at him before cautiously taking a seat next to him.

“No worries. I really owe you an apology.”

An apology?

When he realised that you were staring at him, he turns away.

“Don’t stare at me. I wasn’t sure of my feelings and I was pretty embarrassed whenever you confess to me. I want to apologise for not taking your feelings seriously and disregard your efforts. Even though it’s a little late, but I am trying my best now to get to know you better and acknowledge your efforts.

I was having sleepless nights on whether do I like you or not after you decided to give up on me.

After asking and making sure of my feelings…

Y/n, I do like you. Can you please don’t give up on me? Instead of you chasing me, this time, I’ll do the chasing.” Sakusa declared with a soft smile on his face.

You were stunned.

Did your ten years of crush finally have some progress? And, he even said that he will do the chasing now.

Instead of giving him a reply, you threw your arms around him. He naturally wraps his arms around you.

“You’re really serious about chasing after me?” You asked again, just to get some reassurance.

“I am. Once I’ve said it, I will put my heart to it.”

And it all starts again, except that this time, Sakusa is doing the chasing.

[*bonus timeskip — y/n & Sakusa’s third year in university]

As usual, your boyfriend of two years was waiting outside of your class, all freshen up after his match. Your classmates were all whispering because the star athlete of their volleyball club were waiting outside.

“Kiyoomi! How was the game? Did you get hurt?” You greets your boyfriend with a peck of his cheek and his cheeks turns pink.

“Not in front of others…We won and I’m not hurt. What do you wanna eat?” He wraps his arm around your waist, holding you close to him.

Unlike him, you decided to retire from competitive Judo and pursue sports medicine instead. You wanted to continue to support him and it was even a miracle that you got into your major.

“I want to eat that dish you made last week. Can you make it today? You’re sleeping over at my apartment, right? It’s Friday and you don’t have to return to dorm on the weekends…” You coyly nudged him.

He laughs a little and shakes his head.

“Yeah, I’m staying over. We have to stop by the mart to buy the ingredients. Oh, do you wanna stop by the cafe that you mentioned yesterday?”

After all those chasing, it was definitely worth it.

“Yes! Let’s go!” You cheered and was about to walk ahead, but he stops you.

Sakusa points to his lips and you knew what he was hinting.

“Congrats on the win~!” You tip-toed and kisses his lips.

Now, both of you are in a good mood for your cafe date and sleepover.

You had been begging Azul to bring you to the Coral Sea for months now, and each time he stubbornly refused, saying that he was too insecure to show you his mer-form yet, he needed time to prepare, etc.

But you listed reason after reason why you wanted to go there with him, and each time you pleaded with him it just got more convincing. How could he say no to you and your sweet face, after all?

So he sucked it up, made you a bag full of underwater-breathing potions, and when you had your next school break, he took you down to the beach!

You could've spent hours down there under the sea, admiring every little detail of the swirling, vibrant ocean life around you, from the coral to the whales, there was just so much to see!

"Wow, Azul, I can't believe you live down here!" You marveled at the underwater city you passed through on your way to his house, where he said his mom and step-father resided. "Can't we just stop and look inside some of the shops or something? I dunno when I'll be able to visit again."

Azul laughed lightly at how animated you were. "Dear, as long as you're with me, you can come down here with me any time you desire."

"Aww, how sweet."

You intertwined your hand with his, and took a moment to appreciate how beautiful he was under the sea. His purplish skin was soft to the touch, and with his eight tentacles you admired how smoothly he glided through the water. His bright blue eyes stood out amongst the rest of him, and overall, he was just a beautiful sight to behold.

"You're stunning in this form, you know," you smiled softly, watching his eyes widen and a soft blue blush tint his cheeks at the sudden compliment. "I mean it."

He coughed and averted his eyes for a moment, and struggled to form words for a few moments before meeting your gaze again. "Well, I could say the same thing about you, darling," he smoothly replied, and raised your hand to press a gentle kiss to it.

"Stop it." You laughed, and lightly swatted his arm. "You're changing the subject."

"That's what I do." He smirked.

"Yeah, yeah, okay, how much longer 'til your mother's house?"

"Not much longer, dear. But she wants us home by dinnertime. She's eager to meet you, you know." He pointedly looked at you. "I'm sure she'll be all over you, fussing like she's your own mother. It's just in her nature, I suppose."

You smiled fondly at the idea. "She sounds delightful. She runs a restaurant, yeah? Then I'm sure her food will be absolutely delicious!"

"Indeed."

When the water started to get darker from the setting sun, you finally reached the Ashengrotto residence. It was getting a bit harder to see, but you could distantly make out a figure in front of their door, waving in your direction excitedly.

"Oh dear, she's been waiting outside for us," Azul sighed. "I told her there's no point to standing outside all day for us. Get ready to say hello to my mother, Y/N."

"Can't wait." You grinned at him, and he felt his heart warm at the sight. A tiny smile broke across his face as well, one that only you could see in that moment.

And then you heard his mother's voice coming from the house.

"Oh, Zuzu, is that you, my baby??"

You heard Azul mutter a quiet "oh, dear" before Mama Ashengrotto came rushing up from the house, and seized Azul in a very tight embrace. He seemed to be struggling, just a little bit.

"Mama, I can't breathe-"

"Shh, Azul, I haven't seen you in so long, let me hug you!" She huffed.

He looked to you desperately, silently pleading you to help him, but you decided to stand there and let it happen, trying to stifle your giggles.

After a moment, he was released and heaved a big breath of air, but Mrs. Ashengrotto wasn't paying attention to that. Her attention was on you now.

"Oh goodness, who might this be? What's your name, dear?"

"Um, my name is Y/N. It's nice to meet you!"

You held out your hand for a handshake, but she completely ignored that, and trapped you in a hug, too.

"My goodness, you seem like a delightful soul, I'm sure Zuzu is very lucky to have found you!" She released you quickly, then swam behind the both of you and ushered you towards the house. "Come, come, it's almost time for dinner, you must be starving!"

Mama Ashengrotto's seafood dinner ended up being nothing short of delicious, and both you and Azul devoured every bite of what she put on your plate... despite Azul's grumbling.

"Honestly, Mother, I'm trying to keep myself on a diet, you know," he sighed.

"Oh hush, I know how you felt about yourself when you were younger, but now you're too skinny! A balance must be kept for true healthiness," she tutted.

You nodded along with her. "She's right. It's not really healthy to be starving yourself, I mean... you ate everything on that plate like it was your last meal, Zuzu." You couldn't help the grin spreading across your face as you remembered how his mother used that cute nickname earlier.

"Oh, be quiet," he snapped, flushing blue. "Can't I enjoy a meal once in a while without you harping on me and teasing me?"

"Absolutely not. It's too funny." You snickered.

"Aww, you two are just adorable! Reminds me of when I was younger," Mrs. Ashengrotto gushed. "Oh, I know what will make this night even more delightful!"

"Oh, please no," Azul muttered, shrinking into himself. "Not-"

"BABY PICTURES!"

An audible groan sounded from Azul. "Mother, I really don't think that's necessary-"

"Oh, hush boy, they're just in the other room. I'll be just a moment," she giggled.

You had to hold back your own laughs once you saw how mortified Azul looked. His face was buried in his hands, and he seemed to be actively trying to shrink and disappear. "Prefect, please, help me find the nearest pot to hide in. Those pictures are-"

"Right here!" She chirped, gliding in from the living room. "Y/N, you must see him as a little hatchling, he's absolutely adorable!" She set the book down on the kitchen counter, and brought you over to them, leaving Azul to sulk with his head hidden in his arms on the dining table.

She pointed to the first photo in the book of him, where she was holding a tiny baby Azul in the palm of her hand. “See, isn’t he just the cutest thing?” She smiled proudly.

“AWWWWWWWW, he’s so little!!” You cried, holding a hand over your mouth. “He’s like… the size of a nickel, oh my gosh!”

You continued to nearly cry at the continued cuteness overload the more his mother turned the pages of the photo album, and ignored Azul’s grumbling and groaning of please stop, and I think that’s enough, and he got really close to leaving the room out of embarrassment a few times, but there was something about hearing that you thought he was cute? And listening to that genuineness in your voice?? Even though he was a baby in those photos, it made him feel kind of nice knowing that there was someone other than his mother that thought he wasn’t disgusting or creepy or ugly with his tentacles and all. It made his heart feel warm and fluttery. And even with his head hidden, he let himself smile, just a little bit.

After what felt like an agonizing eternity to Azul, you both said your goodbyes to Mrs. Ashengrotto as you approached the door and got ready to head back home.

“It was so nice to meet you, dear,” she said after ensnaring you in a big hug once again. “Please treat Azul well, he’s a fragile boy.”

“I’m not that fragile anymore, Mother,” he huffed indignantly. “I’m doing just fine at Night Raven. I have the Mostro Lounge, my colleagues and classmates, and most importantly…” He gently grasped your hand in his. “…I have the lovely Prefect by my side.”

She smiled approvingly at him. “Aww, well I have faith that you two will support each other during your time at NRC. Take good care of each other, I have no idea when I’ll be able to serve you a home-cooked meal again!”

“Bye, Mrs. Ashengrotto, we’ll try to visit soon!” You waved at her as you and Azul set off once again.

Once you were far enough away, you smiled mischievously at Azul. “Why didn’t you tell me octopi were so little when they were born?”

“Oh, no.”

“Because you were SO TINY! I couldve placed you next to a coin and you would’ve been smaller than it. How did you not get swept away with the currents? How did you not get eaten? How-”

“Y/N, I haven’t the slightest idea.”

“Okay, okay, I’ll stop.” You laughed. “But I hope you know I think you were incredibly adorable as a baby.”

Azul felt his cheeks heat up. “Yes, I believe I gathered as much.”

“And you grew up to be incredibly beautiful.”

“I- that’s enough, I understand.” He was struggling to keep a straight face without turning away from you.

“Do you really, though? Maybe I should go on and really explain-”

A/N: I HOPE I WROTE THIS GOOD ENOUGH !!! Reader is very obviously trans so umm yeah !! Not HUGE on the ending but o well,, requested by my flower anon and proofread by @mictodii !!!

TULSA WASN’T ON YOUR LIST OF PLACES to stop at, but here you are, sitting on the curb of a DX in the small town. You rub your temples in frustration, you knew you shouldn’t have taken that piece of shit.

Thankfully, it broke down right by the DX, so all you had to do was get a couple of guys to assist you with pushing the car.

You did the best you could to pull off to the side with your car sputtering and slowly dying, but in the end you got it mostly off the road.

You then walked across the street to the small building, greeting the men inside.

“Hey, guys,” you cleared your throat, hoping your voice wasn’t too high pitched.

“Hey, man.” Soda smiled at you and you felt as though a million fireworks went off in your heart. Not only because he called you “man,” but also because this guy was extremely handsome.

“My car broke down,” you said as you pointed behind your back. The two men looked past you and at your red mustang. “Think you can help me out?”

One of the guys, a man with a crooked tooth and a sleeveless denim jacket looks at the other man.

“Give us a second,” he says to you. You nod and look around awkwardly.

“I dunno, Soda. Look at ‘im. Look at his car, look at his goddamn outfit!” Steve argues quietly with Sodapop. He clearly thinks you’re one of the bad Soc’s, but, in reality, you’re quite the opposite.

“Steve, I’ve never seen him around here, maybe he’s just passing by?” Soda suggests. “And if he does end up being like the guys around here, we can take him on. There’s only one of him and there’s two of us.” Steve sighs and rolls his eyes, his way of telling Soda “whatever.”

“You know what happened to it?” Soda asks as he turns back around.

“Uh, no. It just kinda..broke down.” You shoved your hands in the pockets of your khakis.

“Alright, well let’s go check it out, yeah?” He walks out from behind the counter, Steve following him.

You led them to your car and they popped open the hood.

As the men inspected the engine, you explained to them how you got the car and how old it was.

“It’s a piece of shit,” you sigh as you lean against the car door and cross your arms. “Got it from my dad, I dunno how old it really is, but it’s older than me, that’s for sure.”

“Oh wow,” Sodapop says response. After a few more minutes of inspection, Soda looks up at you and tells you what he found. “Okay, so, we’re pretty sure your car's engine just overheated, so this should be an easy fix. All you gotta do is add some antifreeze and wait thirty minutes to an hour or so.” Soda explains.

The handsome man then reaches out to shake your own, starting a real introduction.

“I’m Sodapop, by the way. Sodapop Curtis.” You were stunned to find out his name, and that was apparently visible in your facial expression. Soda chuckles.

“I know, I know. Unique name, huh? I got a brother named Ponyboy, too. Says it on his birth certificate and everything.”

“That’s— it’s a cool name! I just wasn’t expecting it. My name’s Y/N L/N.” You shake his hand.

“That’s a nice name!” He compliments you.

“Not nearly as cool as Sodapop, though.” You compliment him back. He gives you another bright smile.

“That there is Steve Randle.” Soda motions to the other guy, who is still prodding at your engine.

“Hey, you don’t look like you’re from around here? I mean.. I never seen you around.”

“I’m not,” you shrug. “I’m from a little town called Bixby.” Sodapop nods.

“I know about Bixby. What brings you here to Tulsa, huh?” You scoffed.

“Wasn't planning on stopping, I’ll tell you that much.” Soda chuckled and the two of you continued your conversation, Steve occasionally butting in with his own thoughts.

Around 30 minutes later, your car’s engine hadn’t yet cooled off, and it was getting dark.

“Are you gonna be alright driving in the dark?” Soda asks as he looks at the slowly setting sun.

“Yeah, I’m sure I’ll be fine.” You shrugged him off.

“No, no— I don’t think so. I think you should stay the night at my place. With my brothers and me.” You laughed aloud.

“You flirtin’ with me, Sodapop?” You asked him jokingly.

“Maybe I am…so what?” He flashes that adorable smile at you once again. Your mouth parts in surprise.

“Don’t get all surprised on me now, Y/N.” Soda says nonchalantly. “So do you wanna stay at my house tonight or not?”

“I mean— I guess, if you’ll have me.”

“I’d have you any day.”

wow im like… actually surprised by this first episode of dangerous romance. the trailer left me with the impression that this was gonna be some overdramatic, exaggerated rich boy and poor boy love story that’s just cliche and over the top and like… it might turn out to be like that… but even if it does, i wont be mad bc they’re like actually pulling it off. the vibe of it all, the quieter, more somber atmosphere, the cool tone to the colouring, the performances man the PERFORMAMCES!!! (i shouldn’t be shocked, it’s perth and chimon), but it all comes together to make a show that should feel so excessively dramatic in that trope-ey way actually feel grounded. i love that kang is actually a piece of shit!!! and that i can see it’s clearly bc he wants attention from his dad and wants to find purpose outside of this materialistic, rich boy lifestyle, but that doesn’t change the fact he’s actually a piece of shit!! and that sailom is not a poor boy trope, he has a lot of strength and courage and won’t take shit but also won’t rise to anything, that he’s smart and he uses it against people, and im crossing my fingers that his character remains strong and he isn’t just reduced to the poor boy with a golden heart equivalent to a manic pixie dream girl that just serves to awaken the good guy within kang, but with the way they’ve pulled off this first ep, i remain kinda hopeful that they’re doing something more interesting than that. i mean, just the fact that kang’s father isn’t pushing him to be smart and do everything and become important and rich like all the other rich boy stereotypes makes me think this show might look at things from a different angle. and as for the romance… i just hope it is messy. I mean, between this and only friends, something tells me this bl season is gonna be all about toxic, messed up relationships that thrive in the grey area and that’s so my shit, and im excited by it. let’s just hope gmm have wisened up enough to handle these things.

1. Aw I had the feels for MC shame omg. Poor thing. So many emotions. I felt the pain. Especially when explaining the hand scar. Sorry if I'm being spoilery I'm tryna be chill here.

2. I love that you can choose to just go with this is my nature so fuck u mentality or actually try to go against it.

3. Very detailed.. very gross scene. It was great. I don't generally read much horror IFs. I hate horror movies but I really enjoyed this. A testiment to how really good this was.

4. The beast scene was both kinda cute and bittersweet left me with some sadness once again.

Looking forward to getting to know Felix and Eden. Well all the ROs actually. Im very intrigued how the relationship dynamics will work with MCs lil issue.

MC's shame is going to be a common theme/occurrence throughout. I wanted to write a somewhat cathartic story about healing from trauma + how trauma can make you act in ways that aren't the best! MC is far from perfect, and I plan to delve into that more in future chapters.

YES!!! I love the trope of giving in to your nature no matter how grotesque it may be vs. fighting that and trying to become a different person....

I'm honored you checked Nemisi out! I love horror, but I haven't written much of it personally (especially not things I've shown anyone besides my best friend) so this IF is definitely going to be an exercise for my brain writing that genre.

The cat scene was one I wasn't expecting to have such an impact to be honest! But I needed to give the MC some more human aspects, since no matter what they think are now, they did start out in life as one and they still experience human emotions, like it or not.

Writing character interactions is one of my favorite things to do! So I'm excited to show off the dynamics. I also love writing romance so I cannot WAIT to get to that. I love characters who either help each other heal or make each other worse.

hehe scenario. jupeter coming out the other side of All That with a bit of 'wow you're just straight up a bit codependent but maybe that's actually the best-case scenario for you right now carry on fellas'

oh they've Had Their Talk in the aftermath, and, okay, it's agreed that they are Not Doing Romance because Nureyev needs Time To Grieve and it would be better to Take The Pressure Off Of Being In A Relationship and they will Reevaluate when Nureyev's had a chance to be a guy who doesn't have to worry about where his next meal is coming from. but also Like Hell is Juno just going to Leave Him Alone after all this. and the result is that they spend the Big Crash just. completely unhinged about each other. Nureyev's shot past 'feeling vulnerable around Juno scares the shit out of him' and well into 'raw nerves and gaping wounds and compound trauma and feeling vulnerable about literally anything and everything all the time and being around Juno is integral to not spiraling into the abandonment hell vortex'. meanwhile Juno's like 'holy shit Nureyev is letting me be there for him. this is already incredible progress'

u think they were insufferable on the Carte Blanche well. on the Carte Blanche Nureyev was still working on things like trusting Juno enough to let him back in at all and he Had An Image To Maintain and lots of Private Stuff to Deal With and Juno was still figuring out how not to be a prickly ass all the time and 'when is it appropriate to give your bf his space when your default mode is to Investigate Shit' and none of that is a going concern right now

'sometimes you gotta be a little bit mentally ill to handle the mental illness' they have so much separation anxiety and they are clipping their carabiners together. hooking pinky fingers and following each other when one needs to do something in the next room. where's Nureyev? sitting in Juno's lap again. his ass is experiencing 'nervous system doesn't know how to respond to the sudden removal of constant crushing dread and just goes fucking haywire at unpredictable intervals'. he gets random-ass panic attacks and there's only so much the breathing exercises and the grounding exercises and self-soothing techniques can do compared to 'Juno is here and he's fine and he's safe and he is more than happily providing prolonged physical contact' to get him to calm down on a physiological level

meanwhile Juno's like 'i chased this idiot across half the galaxy because he wouldn't ask for help and had to deal with him being all stone-faced and cold about it, do I look like i mind that he's clingy now? a lady does not need his personal space at this time. a lady is living for this. a lady is also maybe feeling clingy have u considered that'

everyone who isn't rita (idek who. melee? the other vivopolis refugees??) is assuming they are just getting a very bad grade in taking it slow and are barely humoring them about it. and neither bothers with denying the boyfriend allegations but it's not bc it's true it's they're just. too exhausted to get defensive about it

rita: and i mean they ain't actually smooching too loud in the kitchen or whatever

melee probably: he just came out of Juno's room wearing Juno's shirt

juno: he's a thief that's his shirt now

rita: i had one where i was gettin chased by this big stompy plant monster with lotsa teeth and i had to distract it by throwing all my snacks behind me and then i was outta snacks and then i was up getting more snacks when mista' steel fired me

rita: you know i think only reason i ain't got separation anxiety about mista' steel is because we spent all that time in the ruby together while we were chasin' after you and that gets a gal over it real fast

1. Wow. Grandma IS aware of Kanghan's issue with his dad. Good for grandma giving Kang the motivation (and inspiration) he needed to improve himself. 😊

2. Kanghan and Sailom testing the bounciness of the bed. I kennat 😂😂😂

3. Oooh, share bathroom and connected bedrooms. So many dirty thoughts forming already lol 😅😅😅

4. Grandma using Kanghan's old shirt to fix Sailom's bag and selling Kang every chance she gets. If she isn't a shipper, I will lose my sh*t 😅😅😅

1) The last book I read:

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros - I absolutely devoured this sequel, omg. Obviously it’s nothing fancy or anything like that but hey what’s wrong with a smutty YA? Not to mention DRAGONS

2) A book I recommend:

Perfume by Patrick Süskind - when I read it I had no idea it was a whole entire modern classic, I just picked it up at Oxfam for like 3 for £1 or something but, wow, I can 100% understand how it earned that status! If you like an eery not-too-long horror story with the most beautiful imagery describing some fucked up gothic storylines and a lot of social commentary, you’ll love this book!

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

Ahhh ok, im gonna say In Memoriam by Alice Winn. The ending was… idk I wasn’t really a fan of the ending, I thought it kind of disengaged and took away from the struggles and severity of war and sexuality the rest of the book portrayed but until that point the rest of the story was everythingggg, there’s a sweet forbidden romance/coming of age/found family in the 1910’s propelling into a story of the horror of WW1 and losing everything you know. All I can really say is that I read it all in one go (more or less) and it had me laughing and sobbing throughout

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):

I mean… there’s an obvious choice here - The Picture Of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. HOWEVER I’m going to absolutely cheat and also say Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, the drama, the trauma, the vast majority of these characters are awful and I love it 🤌🤌

5) A book on my TBR:

So many… so so many… I’m gonna say House Of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski tho because it was expensive and it’s cool looking and I’ve actually been meaning to read that for a while but boy howdy it’s huge

6) A book I’ve put down:

The Tale Of The Body Thief by Anne Rice UGHH I’m trying so hard!! It’s so many words with so little going on, and I do enjoy it, I really do, it’s so goofy, but it’s so.. i mean verbose isn’t really quite the right word but you know what I mean. Sorry mutuals :( I just need a break to read something short and silly - which I’ve almost finished the little series I’m currently reading

7) A book on my wish list:

Prophet Song by Paul Lynch - it sounds absolutely soul crushing and miserable, I know this completely contradicts what I just said about being in the mood for a silly read but <333

8) A favorite book from childhood:

Omg 10000x the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy, guys you don’t understand, as much as I would love to talk about how my mum and I used to sit and read Anne Of Green Gables before bed or my Enid Blyton obsession when I was like 6, Skulduggery Pleasant was my absolute jam - I must’ve read that series (the original 9 + spin offs) a million times in primary school. I did keep up with phase 2 when that was coming out but I don’t know if I’ll bother with phase 3, I’m just too old now and phase 2 wasn’t all that imo - I think it’s sort of beating a dead horse at this point :( but the original 9 and Maleficent Seven/Armageddon Outta Here were my childhood and I definitely absorbed Valkyrie Cain into my identity as a child so that series probably shaped a big part of who I am and my hobbies as an adult

9) A book you would give to a friend:

Love On The Brain by Ali Hazelwood. Silly, nerdy, fun, a cute little Pride and Prejudice-esque enemies to lovers feat. women in STEM

10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own:

Ok so anyone who’s seen my other poetry blog @apoemadaykeepsthehoesaway knows my obsession with The Complete Poems of Wilfred Owen (I have a lot of difference versions) AHHH by far my favourite poet - as you can imagine with such a young man, you can clearly see his changing mentalities, his growth as a person and a writer, his influences, and really gather a lot of context for what’s going on with him in general through his poems. And he grew up in all the same areas I grew up in and hung around as a kid/younger teen, which I think adds to my personal interest in him too. Idk ig we’re very close friends on a parasocial level lol.

And ofc there really aren’t that many poets around that give such visceral, truthful, and emotional insights to the First World War as Owen does (also a queer icon). He was my intro to war literature and I have tattoos relating to him, he and his work are just incredible to read about, would highly recommend having a look at Siegfried Sassoon’s war poems too; another very blunt poet who was a celebrity and war protestor at the time and happened to mentor Wilfred Owen, as well as being linked with other influential folks of the time such as Robbie Ross, Stephen Tennant, Rupert Brooke, and Ivor Novello. Ok Ill move on :,)

11) A nonfiction book you own:

Surprisingly I quite like nonfiction, mainly history and essays from philosophers and the like. Speaking of, Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good And Evil is a pretty solid one I own, I’ve never read anything where the author begins by calling himself and all his coworkers socially inept incels 🥹 but even though I don’t remember the specific reason I bought it (I was reading it to argue against some other philosophers in an essay in college and I really don’t remember who or what it was) I remember it being a really interesting read

Or yknow in a more traditional sense of non-fiction, I also have Notes On A Nervous Planet by Matt Haig. Really helped me get through some stuff, if you’re struggling with anxiety or feeling a bit down lately I’d very much recommend

12) What are you currently reading:

Omg ok, The Hitchhiker Trilogy by Douglas Adams, I’m currently on book 3 of 5 - Life, The Universe, And Everything. Really silly and nonsensical space bs but somehow also a bleakly satirical social commentary on the unseriousness of our ‘serious’ world. Really enjoyable, fairly political to some degree, really short (around or less than 200 pages a book), really fun. Martin Freeman truly was the perfect casting for Arthur Dent in the film of the first book. Full of that quintessentially British cynical humour and of course plenty of cups of tea

To give a little preview, the second book literally opens “The story so far: In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”

13) What are you planning on reading next?

Books 4 and 5 of The Hitchhiker Trilogy, and then I suppose I had better carry on reading The Tale Of The Body Thief :D

First of all i did see ur art of that rank 1! Powerful homoeroticism. I really enjoyed it. The "go all out? That sounds like fun" HEBDIWBZUWBIZN???????? Has the same vibe as goro's "ill need all the practice i can get to take you out" just the phrasing and the double meaning behind every one of these losers interaction constantly makes me go Oh? Oh! Oh... Oh! Ohhhhhhhhh ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Secondly, do not even get me started on the fucking romance options in the game. Im aroace and i haaate when every single confidant story with a girlie just has to go "wow u have helped me so much and ur so kind.....it must be because u have a crush on me!" Or "we've come to the obligatory rank where i somehow from somewhere at some point in time developed feelings for u and i have to ask u out!" Fuck no! Stop treating romantice relationships as the destined "upgrade" to your already existing friendship for fucks sake. Like i get that its a game mechanic for the players to have their fun and what not but it just pops out of nowhere sometimes and comeon even kawakami?????

On that note, idk how this fits but i love self projecting and hcing akiren and goro being on the aroace spectrum too but they haven't figured it out yet so it just makes the whole mess of complicated feelings between them even funnier

Goro to ann: "i hate this guy so fucking much" "are you sure you don't just have a crush on him" "what's a crush"

ehe the go all out line was probably my favorite, next to holmes/watson. thinking about the fact that akira can't do all-out attacks on his own in swap bc he doesnt have teammates... so of course going "all out" would be fun

yeah :( honestly i do feel sorry for turning the girls down but it'd just make me worse to accept their feelings. it really does say a lot about how theyve been treated by the men thus far, to start romantically liking the first guy who's half decent to them. ugh ladies this is why you gotta look at each other (looking at you, makoharu)

my goro has probably never had a romantic attraction to anyone in his life! ive always headcanoned him as sexually attracted to men, but demiromantic if that makes sense? hes got SO much going on with him, romance just isn't wven a possibility in his mind until akiren comes along
