Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."
Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.
These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!
Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!
Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.
So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

i’m so proud of how much i showed up for myself today
despite how drained i was from work and just how over the day i was, i didn’t give into any temptation that would cause me to stray from being my best self
i doubled down on my protein intake, did my HIIT workout, drank my water, and took the most wonderful shower where i got to deep condition and do my curl care 🥹🥹 i felt so beautiful when washing my hair idk how to explain it, but just seeing how much i accomplished today, it sank in that this is really who I am and have always been
a strong, capable, ambitious, determined, incredible, stunning, smart, kind woman with unlimited potential 🥹🩷🩷🩷🩷

there is something unique and deeply special about monkey d luffy as a protagonist. he’s overwhelmingly ADORED by the fandom. he’s consistently the most or at least top 3 most popular characters in the whole series. peoples takes about him are gushingly positive. and that’s… really uncommon.
a LOT of fandoms i’ve witnessed or been in have a tendency to favor characters other than the main character. especially in anime. the main characters are often written as a blank slate for readers/watchers to project onto, but that makes them not as interesting and so they don’t get the fan attention.
but luffy is so far from that. and he’s ALWAYS been this way. we love him so much. he’s the heart of the story and the heart of the fandom in every single way. and i think that speaks to how well-written he is as a character. he’s fun and charming and complex and interesting and he makes us laugh and cry and cheer and hope and love. he’s able to inspire so much joy in people, both in his world but also in this one. and i think that’s really special. i feel so grateful to have found this story that means so much to me, and i’m so grateful that luffy exists.

I love Donnie & Mikey LIKE AGH, just consider:
Mikey: *distressed yelling*
Donnie: *tells him to let go*
Mikey: *lets go*
LIKE THERE'S A 700 FEET DROP BELOW MIKEY AND HE LETS GO INSTANTLY, JUST BECAUSE DONNIE TOLD HIM TO, LIKE,
DO YOU REALIZE
HOW MUCH HE TRUSTS HIM
I CAN'T
THEM
