My extensive thoughts on the main characters in Newsies uk

Last post about the show I promise but I have too much to say about those guys

(Again I was sat in Manhattan and everything you guys know the drill at this point )

Starting off with Jack !

He has so many emotions ??? Like Michael is so good at portraying Jack's feelings here, and I think the one that comes back the most throughout the show is anger. He is angry at the world, he is angry because the newsies' life is literally so unfair, and don't get me started on his disgust toward Katherine in act 2. Like he doesn't even want to be near her he is staying as far away from her as possible and that's very striking

And that's the thing about Jack's anger, he is never just angry he is also incredibly sad and bitter ?? You can see exactly how broken this boy is and I love it

Also his version of Santa fe is legit so sad. Because first of all, he really makes you notice that Jack just got out of a fight. He is soaked and tired, stuggles to walk and has to hold on to everything he can find to keep his balance. And the way he sings is kind of a mix of angry and hopeless and his voice breaks and it hurts so much

And the final note ?? One of the best I've heard, it's not only the tone it's the emotion in his voice it's the way he is reaching desperately for something he knows he can't get and you can really feel that in this one note

I have so much stuff to say about hopeless Jack and I need to talk about his attitude in the watch what happens reprise because he is literally tired of this, he is desperate and genuinely scared for all his guys because he just wants to protect them and he can't. And that's why he gives up later on in Pulitzer's office, because the mention of Crutchie is enough to literally break him so don't even try telling him about Davey and other newsies going to the refuge

His speech at the rally is so heartbreaking istg I can't deal with this. The way his voice just breaks on every sentence because he understands exactly what's at stake here. And his "how long can you go without making money" line ? I'm like 99% sure he was speaking directly to Tommy boy. Tommy boy who had been a scab, and the last of them to join the strike. It's so specific and so cruel but at the same time devastating because Jack knows his newsies so well. He knows Tommy boy will be vulnerable to this I-

Also after the rally the newsies all pass by Jack shooting him darks looks and he just. Doesn't want to look them in the eyes. Excuse me while I scream in my pillow

His relationship with Katherine was very interesting too. Their dynamic was actually quite different from anything I've seen, overall much more genuine and less superficial than in some productions

+ during I never planned on you, his physical comedy is literally adorable ?? Like he makes Kath pose for him to sketch her and at some point he even tilts her chin up

One more thing I have to talk about, because getting a poc Jack is absolutely amazing and it changes so much stuff in the show ??? Like not explicitely, but the undertones are really different in the context of Jack being black. E.g. his entire Seize the day monologue feels so much more emotional, and Michael really speaks slowly to insist on every single line and make sure we know what he is talking about

Another striking scene about this is Something to believe in. I think that's part of why I said the Jack x Kath dynamic hit different, because this context really changes everything in this song, with the turning point being "I know girls like you don't wind up with guys like me". And it's not just about Jack being poor it's about him knowing very well what having a different skin color means in this world and he is scared to hell about it

The point I'm trying to make is that having a poc Jack gives a whole new dimension to the show and I absolutely adore the way Michael chooses to show this

Also I want to talk about Javey because why not but uh let me tell you Jack does not like Davey at the beginning. He is actually mean and when he talks about needing Les to sell newspapers he is clearly implying "but I don't need you." This changes later on, I really liked the scene before they run from Snyder when Jack thinks Davey need a place to sleep because it feels like okay I don't like your vibe but you're one of my guys now so I want to protect you

Anyway they become closer after that but yeah the way this dynamic starts off is very different

But then they become so intimate ?? I'll come back to this with Davey but they actually get close physically and emotionally, not only with the strike but also because they genuinely start liking each other. I think you need the context of the fandom's vision of Javey to appreciate this relationship development to it's fullest but when you have it boy oh boy

Davey < 333

This may not all be coherent because the most constructive thing I can say about him atm is very close to "alekkkajja" so deal with me here

He is autistic. And gay. Ryan kopel I owe you my soul for this

The first time he comes on stage it already looks pretty clear that he is extremely anxious socially, and as the show goes on it's literally obvious that this guy is autistic as hell

He is stimming for the entire show ??? Always fidgeting and doing something with his hands, little nervous gestures all the time, stuttering when he has to speak in front of people...

When I say stuttering, I mean it. At the beginning it's clearly because he is extremely anxious and doesn't want to speak up on front of the others, he is refraining himself from saying what he really thinks. But then it changes ! Character development !!! He starts stuttering because he is rephrasing what he wants to say so he can make it clear, not because he is afraid to speak up !

Also his character development as a whole is just so amazing. It's not just the way he gets more self-assured throughout the show, it's the way he is clearly becoming more comfortable with all the other newsies ! It's the way at the beginning he is standing very far from the other (literally the other end of the stage) because he doesn't want to be a part of the strike, and then he goes toward them, he comforts them. It's the way he goes from the scared guy who stutters all the way through the "you gave me nineteen" line, to the guy who has to speak up at the rally in front of all the others ! And it's so clear he does not want to do this, he would rather be anywhere else, but he still has the courage to do it ! I could go on for hours about this but the way he gains self-assurance is just. So interesting.

Obv I can't talk about this without talking about the watch what happens reprise. For me it was the moments where I could really see how much he had changed (and how autistic he was) because he is just so excited ! He is talking fast and loudly, he goes toward Jack, tries to establish physical contact with him ! He just got so comfortable around him, he feels free to behave like this with Jack ! Also plotwise this is really the best interpretation of this scene imo, because his excitement is SO contrasting with Jack's hopelessness and it makes the whole dialogue 100% more moving

Also the way his voice goes from "is that a real place ?" = excited bc Jack you're so talented - to "ohhh is that Santa Fe ?" = okay this is bad

Also "we. Are. Inevitable." *Ninja pose*

+ "tell me how quitting does Crutchie any good ?" "Exactly" in the most I-told-you-so singsong voice ever

Did I ever mention this boy is gay

The scene after Jacobi's ? That's gay flirting if I have ever seen it. "Why don't you come over ?- TO MEET MY FOLKS" yeah sure we believe that

"It's- it's good to have you back again" he is so bright and happy and it's just adorable to watch pls

Idk who cares about this but um. When they all get in the triangle to say their names during Seize the day. He says Davey. He doesn't say David. He calls himself Davey. I'm gonna need a moment to recover from this

Coming back to the "being comfortable around Jack" thing but !! The reaction to meeting the governor !!!! When Roosevelt's shakes Jack's hand Davey runs toward him excitedly and they both fangirl so hard like "bro did you see what just happened ???"

Okay one last thing and i'll stop but he is incredibly protective of Les. During Seize the day he is the one to drag him away from the fight instead of Jack and during the rally he is pulling Les behind him to prevent Jack from getting to him and that's honestly so heartbreaking because it also shows how deeply disgusted he is with Jack at this moment

Yes I'll stop now sorry but I love this Davey so much you don't even know

Katherine

I'm gonna be honest here, I never really liked Katherine. But Bronté's Kath ? I can and will die for her

She seems to be more aware of the situation. Like in Watch what happens and at Jacobi's she seems to actually understand what is at stake, maybe even more so than some of the boys

Also she is very responsible, during WWK she is on the aisles (right-hand side looking at the stage), taking notes about what the boys are doing ; and when she meets them at Jacobi's, instead of giving in to them turning her down and to Jack's flirting later on, she always tries to come back to the topic at hand= the strike. Imo this was very nice because it establishes her as an actual and serious reporter

Due to this it actually feels like she is very present in the show, because I think part of why I didn't like Katherine before was bc I felt as if she was established more as a plot device for Jack's love story than as an actual character (that's only my opinion tho). But here she really appears as a reporter who is essential to the strike, like a mix of Broadway!Kath and 92!Denton, which makes her whole arc so much more interesting imo

Sidenote but this essential role is also shown when she is the only one we see on stage looking at the banner at the end of Once and for all which is really cool

And she is so sassy ??? Like at Jacobi's she replies to the boy's insults in a very sarcastic tone, and during watch what happens she goes "a girl ? It's a girl ! Is that even legal ?" and mimics/mocks the attitude of the editors . Okay queen

"the guy painting places he has never seen is calling us crazy ?" is said to Davey instead of Jack

Also yeah "now would be a good time to shut up" I think a guy behind me gasped so yeah thanks queen

After the rally the emotion in her voice felt SO real and genuine. The way she proposes her plan to Jack feels like she is trying real hard to make up for not telling him everything, because she knows she has no excuse for it so now she can only try to do her best to make him forgive her. Also if I'm being honest, I never really liked Something to believe in as a song, but again, Michael and Bronté actually made me fall in love with it. Their voice were really intense - tho it was last sunday's show so I can't tell if this level of emotion with their voices almost breaking is and everytime thing or if Bronté was really losing it. Which, fair.

Moving on to Crutchie !

YES ??? This interpretation of Crutchie is just so different (in a really positive way)

Just to make it clear, I love AKB and I have nothing against his Crutchie. But after years of watching Crutchie be this little soft ball of sunshine who sometimes talks to Jack, this one really felt like he was finally allowed to express his full potential on stage

Because boy this Crutchie is loud. He is center stage. You can't miss him, he is always whistling, talking loudly, being noticed, you don't have a choice but to see him, you can't just not aknowledge him because he is right here and he makes you notice him

Also he is like. Essential to the narrative. Because he has a clear leadership role toward the other boys (telling them to run after Seize the day...). And his relationship with Jack is incredibly important here, from the beginning to the end it's them, Crutchie and Jack. That's established very clearly in the Prologue, but to me the most important scene to show this was the WWH reprise. Because Jack is so heartbroken and hopeless because of Crutchie. He is almost giving up because he's so genuinely scared for him. And don't even get me started on Jack's attitude when Pulitzer talks about Crutchie in the refuge bc my boy is this close to a breakdown

Also due to this Letter from the refuge hurts so much ?? He misses Jack and all the boys, and he clearly put the accent on telling Jack to take care of all the others ! To protect them !! He is in the refuge and all he wants his to know his friends are safe !

And his whole arc his so much darker in this ?? He is very aware of their situation, willing to buy the papers before the World will know and when Henry asks "at those prices ?" his answer is a very definitive "like we got a choice ?". And when he gets beat up after Seize the day he is actually pleading very loudly for the boys to come back for him and for Wiesel not to hit him. In Letter from the Refuge he actually seems to be in physical pain, and at the end when he gets back from the Refuge it's not just "yeah I got back that's nice" it's literally yes I went through hell and I came back. And oh boy his "may I ?" before cuffing Snyder and hitting him ? He's not joking around, he actually wants to make him pay for what he did

This is the Crutchie this fandom deserved and I would die for him thank you very much

And finally (yes I'm almost done I promise), Race !!!

Okay this is definitely my favorite Race

He has nothing to do with Ben's Race. If you ask me, he is much more like 92sies Race, though obviously not the same

He isn't just a goofy idiot joking around, he is really mature. He is one of the oldest and most mature newsies, and it shows, through the way he dresses and his attitude as a whole

Yes he still likes messing around, like in King of New York, but he is also very responsible toward the other newsies and is really shown as Jack's right-hand man, with many scenes where it's really obvious that he has a leadership role. E.g. at the beginning with his "Henry get down here", and during once and for all when he seems to be giving instructions to the newsies around the stage. Also he clearly cares a lot about them and wants to protect them so yeah overall a much more mature Race than what we got with Broadway

From what I saw he is still very close to Albert, and also to Specs ? Which makes sense because they are all among the oldest newsies. Finch also hangs out with them sometimes but less frequently

Also he is literally rough around the edges. He is actually ready to pick up a fight with the Delanceys at the beginning and oh boy don't get him stressed because then he is ready to lose it

Okay I really want to talk about his relationship with Davey because um. Race actively dislikes him for a solid half of the show (let's just assume no one likes Davey at the beginning okay). His "aren't we the hoi poloi ?" is actually mean. Maybe my take is entirely wrong, but imo the way Race sees it, Davey is just that priviledged guy who suddenly came in and has no idea what's at stake for most of the newsies, and he very strongly despises him for it. And at the beginning he is clearly not happy with Davey putting his guys in danger with the strike, which comes back to the idea of him being a leader and having to care for the younger newsies. Overprotective Race we stan

This changes after Seize the day tho, during Kony they actually seem to get closer and establish an intimate bond during the song

Also at some point (I think Seize the day ?) he gives Les a piggyback which is pretty cute

Okay I promise now I'm done ranting but this version of the show is actually amazing because the actors have an entirely different take from the Brodway show so it really feels like you're rediscovering it all over again

hiiii. so i loved the honey thing for new couples that you incorporated and i was wondering if there was anything you wanted to share related to faunus marriage/wedding traditions ? also….do some of the newsies (nora) demand to be a part of the wedding in some way lmao

[I just thought an awful lot about Faunus traditions generally, as a bit of background!]

okay so this ask absolutely lit up my brain as I considered the possibilities, so thanks for that.

there's just so many wonderful, idiosyncratic wedding traditions out there! there's glass stomping, of course, but there's also handfasting, various kinds of candle-lighting, jumping the broom... I know of one couple who came from two different seaside towns literally across the world from each other, and they combined sand from those two beaches as well as the beach of the destination wedding island where they were getting married. the options are infinite!

that last example, though, about the sand? that sparked the thought that is The Right Thought:

so the Faunus creation myth of the Shallow Sea is all about choice and transformation-- the Faunus become Faunus by being brave enough to leap into the water and reveal their true, changed selves; after that, there is no going back. I think this would be an absolutely lovely and meaningful sentimenet to be incorporated into Faunus marriages-- having to jump (or gently step with just your bare feet to not ruin your outfit lmao) into a shallow pool of water together, to show that your union will forever change you, that it's a choice you're making from which you cannot turn back. and, of course, that you're proud of your Faunus heritage. the water would need to be salted to represent the Shallow Sea, but probably a tradition over time evolved where couples maybe put other things meaningful to them/their relationship into the water. off the top of my head, maybe a little bit of printing ink or rose petals to represent Summer come to mind for the bees.

you didn't ask me about Mantali traditions, but they probably have something sort of superstitious in the vein of "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue"-- certain genres of things from some old saying you're supposed to incorporate into your outfit or ceremony for good luck. maybe something Dust-related? I'll have to think on it

as far as who's ultimately involved with the wedding... the biggest issue is navigating everyone's egos because both Ghira and Kali and Weiss want to pay for the whole damn thing, but have different expectations of what A Proper Wedding is supposed to look like, and tbh Blake and Yang would be fine if they just, like, did it at Calavera's with the tables pushed to the sides! they're not fancy!!! also like Weiss's bank accounts aren't exactly infinite anymore, she has access to the trust fund Nicholas set up for her independently that Jacques can't touch, and her savings she transferred from her regular "allowance" back when Jacques was still giving her money, but she doesn't have bottomless Schnee pockets anymore. meanwhile Ghira and Kali are 100% trying to buy Yang's love because they already adore her and poor Yang is like IS THIS A TEST ARE THEY TRYING TO SEE IF MY LOVE CAN BE BOUGHT CLEARLY ON MY HONOR I MUST TURN ALL OF THIS DOWN

the bickering only stops when Blake and Yang threaten to elope and have Robyn marry them at The Spot (Robyn: "obligated to point out that I'm technically only ordained in Mantle and weird I just went suddenly and temporarily deaf at this mention of a wildly illegal use of an unpermitted Atlesian landing space LOVE THE ENERGY THO I'll keep my schedule clear")

ultimately they have a perfectly reasonably sized wedding at a perfectly reasonably priced reception hall. I don't know that Remnant would have bridesmaids/attendants like most modern American weddings, and even if they did I feel like Yang and Blake would BOTH feel a lot of pressure about it in different ways (Yang being like "oh no I have too many best friends where do I cut it off" and Blake being like "do I even have friends my mind has gone blank I don't think I've ever made a friend in my life"). probably instead of doing that, they make it a big sort of potluck community thing where everyone has a job. some of them are very intuitive and somewhat-traditional (Ren makes the cake, Velvet takes pictures, Weiss helps pay for it) ("My job is coordinating all the vendors so everything goes smoothly; paying for it is a gift!!") and some of them are... a little less that (Nora is 'Party Captain' and makes sure there are always people on the dance floor, Ruby is 'Hydration and Sustenance Captain' and makes sure the bees are drinking water and don't fall into the common trap of oops the couple only ever has champagne and barely touches their food, Zwei is the ring bearer).

they honeymoon in Menagerie, which is the first time Yang's ever been because until then they couldn't afford for both of them to be absent from the Bee at the same time. (every other time before that when she'd met the Belladonnas, it's because they came to Mantle, prompting many jokes about how an entire country could do without its Chieftain easier than the small newspaper could do without its editor-in-chief)

Newsies JatP AU Drabble (Flying Solo)

I randomly wrote this instead of literally anything else that I needed to or wanted to but it's fun so we deal. This would be a part of the "Flying Solo" chapter of my Julie and the Phantoms AU (click the first tag for all related posts) and would be right after Jack tells Spot about the ghosts and decides to perform a song for him to prove it. There is no telling when or if the rest of this chapter will ever be written so I decided to just post it now. There are indeed references and callbacks to previous chapters that either Do Not Exist or Are Not Posted Yet and I just need everyone to politely ignore those.

Jack turned away from the bickering ghosts with an eye-roll and moved to take his seat at the keyboard when a too-familiar sight froze him in place. Race’s beloved guitar was shining like new, the year of dust wiped away like nothing, as if his brother had just finished cleaning it himself and would bounce through the door at any moment to show Jack the newest chord progression he’d dreamt up in history class. Jack’s heart raced faster and faster as his breath caught in his throat and a million different thoughts flew through his mind in a single moment.

Someone cleaned Race’s guitar.

Someone touched Race’s guitar.

Race hadn’t done it.

Race was dead.

Ma and Charlie never came out here.

Jack hadn’t done it.

Race was dead.

Someone touched Race’s guitar.

“Jack, you ready?” Davey’s voice was a mile away and deafening in his eardrums. The ghost followed his frozen eye line to the beautiful instrument that sat ready for a concert never to come. “Oh.”

Davey cleaned Race’s guitar.

It looked nice, Race would like it.

Race was dead.

“I’m sorry, I should have asked,” a quick, nervous apology came before Jack could finish spiraling. “We got so excited that we could move things but we didn’t want to keep touching stuff in your room so Albert suggested cleaning our mess up and we got carried away and started doing the whole room and the guitar just looked so well-loved I wanted to see what it looked like clean but I- I should have asked. I’m sorry.”

Jack said nothing, voice still stuck in his throat. He didn’t walk to his brother’s guitar so much as he did float towards it. His fingers ghosted over the freshly-changed strings and he tentatively plucked out a few perfectly-tuned notes. Jack shot Davey a questioning glance and the suddenly-awkward ghost offered a sheepish shrug, “Sorry.”

A deep breath.

“It’s okay,” Jack managed to choke out, hoping he didn’t sound as close to a breakdown as he felt. “You uh… you didn’t know. Just… I uh… yeah just ask next time.”

“I will,” There was a tone in Davey’s voice that Jack had never heard before. An odd thing to notice considering they had known each other for about 48 hours if he was being generous, but all the (false, Jack was almost certain) confidence was gone and replaced by soft apprehension. Different than the desperate pleading from before, more of a nervous prayer. No, a promise. A promise that went far beyond the surface vow being shared.

Race’s guitar stared at him expectantly and Jack couldn’t help but pick it up, the familiar instrument a weighted blanket on his soul. The first few chords of their old favorite song rang out clear as ever and one of the thorny vines wrapped around Jack’s chest finally began to loosen its death-grip.

“You play guitar too?” Albert joked cautiously. “Got any other hidden talents you wanna share with the class?”

“Nah, I mean. I know how to play but I don’t know how to play.”

Race knew how to play. Jack could strum the right notes and find a complimenting chord but Race knew his guitar better than he knew how to breathe. He could make the strings sing like any room was Carnegie Hall, he could give the instrument its very own soul with the simplest of melodies. It was a wonder he hadn’t figured out how to become a ghost himself just to wipe away the blasphemous layer of dust Jack had allowed to accumulate.

Something like a smile found its way to his lips as Jack imagined his terror of a little brother cracking the secrets of parting the veil between worlds just to dust off his guitar and whack Jack upside the head for being an idiot.

“It looks really good,” Jack found his voice easily this time as he set the guitar back on its stand. “Thanks.”

Davey nodded, still looking uncharacteristically nervous, “No problem.”

Jack’s fingers remained loosely curled around the neck of the guitar, the gentlest sparks of reassurance reaching him through time. Davey’s grip tightened around his own instrument, so subtly he might’ve imagined it. The gaze lingered longer than was probably necessary but Jack couldn’t help but be drawn into the puzzle that was David Jacobs. The smooth, easy confidence that crumbled to insecurity in less than a second. The deliberately carefree attitude until music came into the picture and suddenly he became a wild tornado of passion and near-mania. Jack wondered why he had noticed so much in so little time.

A few agitated thumps of the bass drum pulled the room’s attention to Sarah restlessly twirling a drumstick from her stool, “If I remember correctly, Jack, you’re the one who burst in here saying we have thirty minutes to turn this poem of yours into a song so mind-blowingly epic your bestie doesn’t immediately call the psych ward on you for claiming to see ghosts.”

“Please don’t call him my bestie, he will beat you up,” Jack groaned.

“He can certainly try but one of us learned how to throw things today and it was not him.”

For the fic title game, yet another shamelessly stolen song lyric: hearts will break (for future's sake)

EEEEEEE BRUH I’ve never heard that song and have no clue what it is but what a BANGER line

Okay so I’ve never done this with the newsies fandom only because i haven’t really written much for it, but I’m a sucker for reconciliation. Just an absolute slut for Right Person Wrong Time, so I think that’s what I would make this hypothetical fic about.

omg omg omg and it would be one of those double timeline fics where it jumps between the past and present as a nod to the (for future’s sake)

my vibe for the Past Timeline is: Jack and Davey meet and hit it off VERY quickly because they are them and inexplicably drawn to each other. I’m thinking college freshman era, maybe they’re roommates?? Yeah, yeah they’re roommates let’s roll with it. Past Timeline would ideally jump around through their four years of college in order of relevance to the Current Timeline (we’ll get there, bear with me. There’s a bear with me. His name is Fred. He’s a menace) but begin with their last interaction/falling out and end with their first meeting— Think JICFEBDHGA, If the scenes were the alfabético and alphabetical order was chronological.

The general vibe I’m going for is Jack being head over heels in love with Davey and Davey just having NO FUCKING CLUE because Jack is his friend, his buddy, his rotten soldier, his sweet cheese, his good time boy. But like, Davey is just so Repressed (not in a gay way, he knows he’s 💅🏽, he just doesn’t talk about his feelings and isn’t in touch with them because Oldest Brother Syndrome) that he’s like “yeah this Amazing Feeling and Deep Connection is just friendship :)”.

Meanwhile Jack desires this fucking weirdo he’s stumbled upon carnally and is literally obsessed with him and always dropping casual “I love you’s” “I would marry you in a heartbeat” “for real I want you in my life forever” bc he’s got that All Or Nothing personality and Davey’s dumbass is just like OH YOU!

That all ends poorly because eventually Jack’s like. Dude I am IN LOVE WITH YOU!!! This is the vibe for Present Timeline: it’s been several years, Davey hasn’t thought about jack in ages (that’s a lie, he was having his midnights moment like. Last night. CAUSE HE WAS SUNSHINE I WAS MIDNIGHT RAIN! ) but Jack’s in Santa Fe anyway and is married and has a kid according to Facebook a few years ago so rip Davey trying to find the colors jack painted his life :/ bc of That WS Just Friendship he hasn’t found anything CLOSE in ages. But surprise! He stops for covfefe and guess who the FUCK is the barista? In New York? Guess who the FUCK has been living there with his daughter (sorry I’m in a very Single Father!Jack mood) for SIX MONTHS and never said a WORD to Davey??

Anyway, this timeline would go in straight chronological order and follow them reconnecting, hashing out their old shit, deciding if they want to be together (they do) and what that looks like. So think 0123456789 numerical order being chronological.

So on the whole, the order would be something like:

MORE RANDOM NEWSIES NOTES… PART THREE

Having sat in Brooklyn, I now 100% understand what they mean when they say seize the day really takes it out of them - you can see the sweat dripping, hear the huffs of breath and there were genuine tears falling on a number of faces as they tried to hold it together for the picture… though granted those tears could have been more to do with it being the final OGs performance… 🤷‍♀️ but no matter the reason, it was incredible and I have a whole new appreciation for it now… phenomenal!

Speaking of seize the day - I am obsessed with the changes - the sound of the sirens coming in as things heat up - adding the roll call (did anyone who was at the last OG show catch the names Jordan and Zach used - I didn’t and I’m just curious.) Though my absolute favourite section is when things slow down and turn into a bit of an Irish jig (no clue if that’s actually an accurate way of describing it but that’s what I’m going with). I love it so much - it gets me every time! Whoever’s decision it was to do that deserves ALL the gold stars!!!

Now we need to talk about Josh Barnett as Race because… PERFECTION!! While I love bens race and livesies in general is incredible - it’s the thing which started it all… but I have really gotten to love the original film and the grit it has - something that wasn't transferred into the Broadway show - but this uk production really feels as inspired by it as it is its Broadway predecessor… but once again I digress, Josh’s race feels like he could have been plucked from the streets of 92sies - he has that same grit and wit of max casellas race who commands his own respect amongst the streets separate from Jack… I think I’ve said this in another post but it’s cool so I’m saying it again, one of my favourite changes is that Jack isn’t the one who starts the show - race is - he’s the one who kicks everything off and calls all the other newsies to order, the action doesn’t start without his say so — and I love that!

Now to the thing I noticed on my last visit which was really interesting — when it comes to the day of the strike and davey and Jack are trying to make out that everything is fine even though barely anyone has shown up and race and finch are questioning everything and then they bring up spot conlon and daveys like “well if you see spot conlon then they’re with us”… race looked like he was about to absolutely thump davey for that - “why you litt—! ⬇️

Scratch that - Saw it again last night and race full on went for him - “why you son of a b—!” - only being stopped by Jack - race was fuming, as the scene went on and the others are talking, race is at the gate with davey and got right up in his face to say something to him - I didn’t actually catch what it was - but it was along the lines of “don’t ever speak to me like that again”… it might not have been that but whatever it was it was intense and I am now obsessed with this moment and absolutely love seeing an angrier/offended side to race

OH MY GOD I now fully understand why people rave about finch so much - he is a fascinating character to watch! Apparently Woodside is a prime finch spotting location… he actually did the bit albert usually does which is holding crutchie whilst Jack has the crutch… but he did not look happy to be doing it - the face he had as he held onto crutchies hand and Jack messed with the delanceys was the picture of - I don’t want to be a part of this! I don’t want to be a part of this! I don’t want to be a part of this! Jack stop causing trouble! As Jack was being chased finch literally called out to him - “you’re an idiot!” And from that point on finch was all I was watching throughout the rest of the show… (I might go into this more in another post)

Also I am now enamoured by the bond between finch and Mike, they had a load of little moments together and they were really cute… the main one that’s stuck with me is when Jacobi hands out the cups of water, Mike and finch are sharing a table, Mike gets the water but then shares it with finch, and there was a moment when finch really tentatively put his hand on mikes arm/shoulder when they’re talking about potentially being on the front page… it was just such a soft moment unlike most of the other who would do the same things but with much more gusto and enthusiastic weight… I just found it really sweet… mikes another one I’ve never really paid much attention to so have never really had any reference as to his character personality - but I see now that he’s one of the more guarded ones, wary of causing too much of a stir, keeps to the back but always listening… he actually goes really well with jittery mr. finch

Jack and Katherine kiss and all the newsies catch on… splasher: it’s about time

The delanceys give Jack a beating back stage before pushing him towards the paper press

So a while back I read a book on acting...

And a large portion of the book was dedicated to finding the purpose of the character you're playing, part of that being figuring out why the character stays in the scene. They can literally just walk off the stage at any time... so what keeps them there? Why do they stay?

SO, as an exercise I wrote a whole character study thing answering this question and others that the book posed about my favorite boy, David Jacobs.

I reread all of it recently to help myself get into character for my @newsiesproduction audition, and this part still haunts me so I thought I'd share it...

Why he stays:

The main reason is Jack. The newsies don't deserve this life that has been thrust upon them, they don't deserve to be pushed around and stepped on by grown men who's greed can never be satisfied. They don't deserve the worn out shoes and blistered feet, the biting cold and ragged blankets, the dirt that never leaves them and the bugs that plague them, the disrespect and having to grow up fast just to survive. They don't deserve any of it. And in their faces David sees his little brother and he doesn't ever want Les to live this way, no one should ever have to, but that's reality. And so he fights for the newsies. But the main reason has always been Jack. Because there's just something in the way Jack's face hardens in defiance, in the way his eyes burn in passion. In the fact that you just can't listen to Jack Kelly talk and not believe him. And before David knows what's happened he's at Jack's side. He's putting himself in danger, risking his family, risking Les for God's sake! Throwing himself into the fire and fighting against the tide all because of Jack. It surprises him and he hates himself for what he's doing, he can't believe his actions are his own and it's impossible not to get lost in the excitement. He stays for Jack. He fights for Jack. Because he hates him. Because really he loves him. But this was never supposed to be a love story was it? (...)

Silly Little Rant

Not to discourage anyone who ships these ships. But this is my explaination for why Javey is best ship.

Jatherine: Even if I weren’t a die-hard Javey shipper, I still probably wouldn’t like Jack and Katherine’s relationship. Not only do I think Jack is far too whiny (something Katherine, as headstrong and snappy as she is, wouldn’t handle well) but I also think that it was *very* forced. I understand that the musical happens in a span of a few days, but Katherine goes from thinking Jack is “the most impossible boy ever” to falling head over heels. And her whole promise to go with him where ever he went? Bullshit. Not an ounce of my being believes that Katherine would leave her job, her writing, her passion, just for someone she met a few days ago. Thirdly, there’s the whole issue of Pulitzer. You really want me to believe that Pulitzer’s gonna drop everything and be good to the Newsies because their leader is dating his daughter? Hell no! Actually, it would probably make things like, ten times worse. At least with Sarah (or better yet, Davey) Jack would be welcomed into a family, not an office building of newspaper workers!

Jarah: The problem isn’t so much with Jarah but with Sarah herself. Right oft the bat, though, this would work better than Jatherine in my opinion. The first issue (the falling in love after a few days) problem remains the same but I am aware of the issue like before blah blah blah. What bothers me more is Sarah’s total lack of personality except just ‘the best friend’s sister’. I get that that’s a popular trope in media and stuff, but I didn’t like it here. Problem number two is that Sarah’s lack of any defining character traits is the only reason it WOULD work better than Jatherine. Where Jack and Katherine would end up fighting after a while, Jack would just completely overpower Sarah. If he has to date a girl (which he absolutely doesn’t) it should at least be a woman who can stand up for herself without just butting heads with Jack because she feels like it, and at the same time, It should be someone he can have a disagreement with without them just storming off, like I imagine Katherine would.

Jacrutchie/Crack: No. No no no no. NO. This is worse than Jatherine and Jarah in my opinion. As long as they’ve known eachother, these two share a brotherly bond, not a love connection. In letters from the refuge, Crutchie literally refers to Jack as his brother! I’d rather not have incest in my movie about the silly little twinks going on strike. Jack and Crutchie are so close, changing their relationship to this would be torture! That’s not even to mention the age gap. Crutchie is 15, Jack is nearly 18. I’m 15, a Freshman, and I wouldn’t date an 18-year-old Senior! That isn’t really viewed as okay, especially since 18 year olds are technically no longer minors, and 15 year olds obviously are.

Jackpot: People ship Jack and Spot?! I honestly didn’t know this existed until I ventured down AO3 avenue one day. I have very similar issues with this one as I do with Jatherine. I think ships where two people are both very tempermental and fiery often end in arguments and broken hearts. That’s not to say they don’t sometimes work out (like in the case of Firestar and Sandstorm from Warriors, for an example) but oftentimes do lead to hardship. Spot has proven his loyalty to Brooklyn, and the kings of Brooklyn and Manhatten probably wouldn’t check out too well with either group! This goes for every version of Spot as well, including fem!Spot from the revival. The only upside I can see is that Jackpot is sort of a funny name :/

Any Poly ship (including ones that include Javey amongst others): Let me start by saying I 100% support my polyamorous peeps! I personally have way too many jealousy issues to be poly myself, and I think the same applies to Jack. As with a lot of this, my reasoning does sort of delve into headcanon rather than stay with the canon material, but it is also my personal opinion on these ships and you’re obviously free to have your own opinion. But let me explain a bit. For anyone who doesn’t know, polyamoury is when multiple partners are in a relationship at once. It’s valid, and actually a really cool concept. A friend of mine, Oliver, was in a poly relationship and described it as an interesting experience, but you won’t get too far if you seek constant love from your partners. I think a poly relationship within the Newsieverse (yup gonna use that term now) would be really cool, but I don’t think Jack is the right person for them. As Oliver told me, sometimes the partners within a poly ship will drift towards and away from each other like the tide. Person A, Person B, and Person C could all be in a poly relationship, happy as clams (or fancy clams with pearls inside, this is Newsies after all). One day, Person A walks in on B and C holding hands, or cuddling, or really any romantic (or s*xual, as is the case in some poly relationships) activity that they missed out on. They know that their partners love them, but at the same time don’t like that their partners are spending so much time together. They get pretty jealous, lash out at B and C, and the relationship ends. I feel like that’s how Jack would be in a poly relationship. Not to mention that others involved (Race, Spot, Albert, Cruchie, and Davey are all common members of these relationships that I have personally seen) may function in similar ways, as I mentioned before. I support poly people, but for it to truly be a polyamorous relationship, everyone has to love eachother equally. (Note that this is not hoq ALL poly relationships work! Just the ones I have seen portrayed in Newsies fanfiction on Wattpad and Ao3) Jealousy makes the whole thing crumble down. So for now, I’ll stick to shipping Jack with just ONE person…David Jacobs.

Javey: This solves all my issues about the other ships. Not only are they close, but not so close they consider each other family, but they also become friends or at least aqquaintances almost immediatly, as opposed to Katherine and Jack. This also solves the issues about family I brought up earlier, but I strongly feel that Davey has a good personality to deal with Jack. While Jack is emotional and easily angered, Davey is a lot cooler and more collecter. He has his own personality and character arc, and he’s still well suited to match Jack’s temperement with his own unique one. If Jack is a blazing fire, then Davey is the cool water needed to balance him out and calm him down. Jack needs someone who has actually proven to be reliable and trustworthy, and I think Davey fits the bill.

So yeah.

Jack x Davey for life.

Blush + Tommy Boy, Specs, Barney, and Skittery. They're not all together, but they have a cute lil polycule. Skittery is only with Blink; Barney is only with Tommy; Blink is with Skittery, Tommy, and Mush; Tommy and Mush are also with Specs. At least, at first, and then they grow closer and kind of branch together. I have so many thoughts on this. It's all Mush's idea at first, he loves love and he loves hard.

Ikeshot!!!! GODS I LOVE IKESHOT. Ike is this little ball of energy bouncing around excitedly but also taking care of his brother. Hotshot is this tough, rough around the edges Brooklyn boy who refuses to let people in. Black cat/Golden retriever relationship.

Lovebird!!!! Romeo and Finch!!!! Holy shit they're so cute 😭They fill me with so much joy. Finch, who is chaotic and probably a little insane, but Romeo who is gentle (and somehow also chaotic) and caring and loving.

Buttons and Dutchy! They're so cute!! They definitely both love to sew and create things and they just have my whole heart. They're the most wholesome ship in the lodgehouse. Absolutely adorable, both great with kids.

Itey (who I can and will refer to as Lorenzo for the rest of this) and Snitch. This one is absolutely canon and no one will ever convince me otherwise. They're literally sleeping in the same bed at the beginning of 92sies. Snitch literally has his feet in Lorenzo's face and instead of fighting (which is the newsies' usual go to), Lorenzo just pushes his foot out of his face, and wipes it off. I bet he got a kiss in apology.

Bart and Myron and Crutchie. PLEASE HEAR ME OUT. So Bart and Myron are obv boyfriends for a long time before the strike. They're so in love it's disgusting. And then they see Crutchie-who doesn't need to be protected, but holy shit Bart can't help himself from trying to kick someone's teeth in when they make a snide comment about him-and he just has these big innocent eyes, but he's got such a rotten mouth what the hell? And they just think it's so precious (they're fricked up, don't worry about it)

Graves and York!!! Graves and York balance each other out. York is aggressive and short-tempered. Graves is even-tempered and thinks quickly on his feet. He's the only one who can calm York down.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't talk about my favorite familial/platonic relationships

Medda is the mom of every single newsie in existence and that's canon.

Race, Jack, and Crutchie are brothers. They've been in the lodgehouse the longest. They've always protected each other. They always will, even after they leave.

The Jacobs siblings!!!! They're so cute!!!! Big sister Sarah being mildly entertained by her big little brother's pining over Jack. Being way more than mildly entertained by her little little brother's starstruck awe by Davey's *cough* friend. They are the generic sibling energies. Sarah, the oldest, is the most responsible, the role model of the group. Davey, the middle child, adaptable and rebellious and tries way too hard to get and keep their parents' pride. Les, the youngest, the baby, gets anything and everything he wants and has 0 problems with it.

CHAOS TRIO CHAOS TRIO CHAOS TRIO. Finch, Albert, and Racetrack MOTHERFUCKING Higgins. They're best friends and wish to cause all of the chaos. In the lodgehouse. At the distribution window. In the streets. Doesn't matter.

OC talky time. Swipe! My baby. I love them. Best friends with Slasher, who Emme and I have declared is siblings with Splasher, Elmer, and Graves. Swipe gets to go to family dinner and absolutely loves all Slashy's siblings.

(more specifically the davey and the newsies’ reactions to jack scabbing🙏)

Oh my god I loved this scene so much

Because the way everyone feels so happy when jack shows up because their leader is finally back. And then not even one minute later the betrayal that appears on their face was so heartbreaking because how could he do that.

At one point Davey tries to interrupt him but Jack just shoves him aside and oh my god. When they all leave Davey takes Les with him as if to protect him but he also remains still for a while and you can just see the disbelief on his face and I just want to give him a hug

For the other newsies reactions I couldn't really focus on anyone (except for that one time in the bronx when tommy boy and ike were two meters away from me ) because so much stuff was happening but have some of my highlights I guess :

- Finch booing Jack with his whole chest. A literal jumpscare the first time I heard it because the guy is so loud oml

- Spot and Mack being absolutely ready to soak Jack and having to be physically restrained by the others

- when Race literally makes his way toward Jack and the latter intends to say something but Race just shoves him back and leaves

- Tommy boy and Ike making multiple side comments in disbelief (such as "how is that realistic ???") And then making their way to the stage while screaming at Jack at the top of their lungs (I am sure many others did that but yeah was in the bronx so I really focused on those two)

- also Jack pointing at a different newsie every time he says "how many days can you go without making money" and the newsie in question just looks at him in shock

I just love this scene too much okay

She examined the body she possessed. “Hmm,” the primordial deity hummed, gazing at Xenoclea’s nimble fingers, her bronzed skin. “Rather strange, the body of a mortal. Not at all vast like my own…” she sounded wistful, like she missed the sensation of a physical form.

I just. absolutely loved writing Gaea. Imo, she was done dirty by HoO - a not-at-full-power Kronos took an entire book/war to defeat him, with major losses of beloved characters to boot.

Meanwhile, his mother, the frickin primordial goddess of the Earth itself...died in one chapter. #LetDown

Sadly, I cannot edit HoO, but I can give Gaea the justice she deserves and be the manipulative, savvy queen we all know she is :)

And like. it's not just this specific passaged I liked to write! It's was her whole scene! Xenoclea's sudden possession! Because they're in the Delphic cave, and it used to belong to Gaea! It makes sense that she could possess Xenoclea!

Also just. the creepy factor of Xenoclea being possessed. Marie Levesque's whole deal was creepy for Hazel, and it was creepy for Apollo too! Terrifying, in fact!

Also also! She calls Apollo 'Paion' a lot here! 'Paion' literally means 'helper', and later in the fic, she's like 'heehee, thanks for the help~', and Apollo realizes that he was dupped into helping her agenda! again

Gaea is just. so good at manipulation imo. she can play the loooong game. Shattered Minds is basically where she lays the groundwork for HoO, for her eventual comeback!

SHE IS A CUNNING QUEEN AND DESERVED TO BE A BETTER VILLAIN!

Okay, so, this got long lmao XD

pale blue walls. my bed is a mess of green sheets, a black comforter, and a white tiger-print soft blanket. i have four pillows staked on top of each other on my bed, with my gray reading pillow propped up against them. no, i don't sleep with the reading pillow. but yes to the four pillows.

also, many stuffed animals. many. and i have no shame in saying so :)

my bed also functions as a dresser/bookshelf. in the three bookshelf slots are all of my Warrior cat books, as well as many of my Star Wars ones (that i have yet to read oop) and on top of it is a special edition cup i got from a Iowa football game as well as a cup I got from a production of Newsies i saw with my grandma and mom. both hold an assortment of pens/pencils/sharpies/ect.

a mini globe sits up there too, with two dreamcatchers i've had since forever hanging off it. one is from a great-aunt who lives in Connecticut, btw! a couple remotes that i barely use anymore are up there too, as well as the current books I'm reading (The Iliad - also packed with the Odyssey - and the first Hunger Games book). My alarm clock is next, with my blue earbuds nearby, and my blue flashlight is next door. more hairties because i am disorganized. a tissue box (green and blue). another book - Star Wars Allegiance - a mini motivational quote my aunt and uncle got me this past Christmas, and three small LEGO sets - Luke Skywalker on a Tauntaun, Ahsoka V Maul, and Mando & Grogu.

my computer sits on a computer stand on my very old white desk. i have a coaster i bought from the Branson Belle Showboat with my special edition Queen Ester cup i got from Branson's Show & Lights Theater. I also have a little trinket from my trip to Branson's Titanic museum - one of those clear, long rectangular things filled with blue liquid? with a little floating Titanic in it? with an iceberg? my ADHD loves that thing. also a quartz necklace i bought in Branson is just lying there.

behind my computer is a picture of my graduation class - 11 kids total, 6 girls, 5 boys. we be small. also, it has a picture of me with my principal getting my diploma.

to my left is my desk lamp, a real skinny black one with like. three modes of light. i have a couple rubber ducks sitting by it - one's the statue of liberty, and the other is a Kansas City Royals duck (I am not a KC Royals fan - cough St. Louis Cardinals 4 Life cough - but i have solidarity with the fellow Missouri team. if the Cards aren't in, and the Royals are, I will root for them.

also i have a little cross-stitch thing i did back in Quarantine by my lamp. it has a couple white and red bead necklaces (you know the ones) wrapped around it so that's how the cross-stitch stays up. also, the flower bracelet i wore to my last Homecoming is still kicking and hanging from the lamp in question. it has a white band, with now-crinkled pale green leaves and white flowers - roses, and i think hydrandea? real small white flowers. real small. tiny.

i also have a small foam airplane i got way back in Freshman year of high school from the nearby aerospace administration. the girls where invited to see what they did and we got some free stuff out of it and the squishy plane was one of them.

(I got to do a bit of welding during that lol)

I also have various other things. my wallet and car keys. a fitbit i still need to hookup to my new phone. a yellow sharpie i use to highlight my school books/notes. a couple hairties (white and black). a black pen. a portable charger i should probably charge before this weekend's vacation. also a pale blue turtle decoration my dad bought me. a pair of green earrings i should put away. a couple Senior photos of myself i still need to mail to my dad and paternal grandpa.

also a paper with all of my future college classes on it that i use to write my grades down on.

i have a 3D model of the Eiffel tower i got when I was 8 and didn't put together until Quarantine XD it's down to the left of my desk. directly next door is my closet, one door is usually open revealing the absolute mess within. on the other side of it is my clothing hamper, where clothes go to be forgotten about for a week until i remember hey, laundry's a thing.

FINALLY. the magnus opus of the room - my bookshelves.

This holds the rest of my precious books, as well as various other things - blank notebooks, school books, jewelry box, my diploma, a small telescope made out of metal from my grandpa way back during my astronomy obsession phase, Cardinals stuff, coloring books, space books, multiple binders, my Bible, picture of my sister, fuzzy orange dice, box of a star wars puzzle i got in last year's gift exchange i have yet to put together (we are focusing on out long-forgotten Busch Stadium one shush), GREEK MYTHOLOGY BOOKS, extra sparkly pillows, and my clarinet case.

on top is my TV with a DVD player (i use it. like....twice...a year?) and MORE LEGO SETS.

i have the death star duel. 301st clone troopers. London, New York, and San Fransico CITY sets. mini Slave I. Luke's X-Wing. TIE-Fighter. Grevious's starship. big Slave I. also, 3-in-1 LEGO set. i can make a car, boat, or bike. it's in car mode rn.

my floor is carpet. kinda a soft brown with specks of black. couple school books are on the floor. couple notebooks. a wite-out. and a black pen.

lastly, on my walls: above and around my desk is a black and white bulletin board with purple ribbon. it is completely covered in old photos, things I got from a school trip to Indianapolis (yes i got to see the inside of the Colts Stadium hehe i was like 'COMMODUS USED THIS IN TDP! :D'), ect ect. I also have a old framed picture saying 'Let's Get Lost' that I wanna move to my bathroom. further to the right is a poster of Big Ben from way back during my London obsession (i wanted to visit someday but now Delphi, Delos, Sparta, Rome, ect ect are top priority lmao).

on the next wall is a Ravenclaw banner i've had since i was seven. a window takes up most of the rest of the space (white trim btw).

next wall i have my sports teams pride hung up :D a pennant each of KC Chief's quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Celtics.

I was not able to wear my Chiefs jersery to school the next day (dresscodes eyeroll) but I did wear the reddest sweatshirt i could find, my Chiefs necklace, and a hairtie decorated with red and white ribbons from my middle school volleyball season.

I had a shit-eating grin on the whole day. Everyone knew I was the winner <3 Also pretty sure I was the only Chiefs fan in the high school then. It was an exhilarating feeling <3

literally nobody asked for this, but if i’m not bringing half-baked daemon aus to every fandom i’m vaguely in, literally what is the point of me

things to keep in mind:

I literally have the daemon forum open in another tab. this is essentially stream of consciousness. virginia woolf who?

mostly based on livesies if only because that’s the one i’ve seen the most, but there’s some touches of 92sies (aka Sarah Jacobs is here because I love her and it’s pride month, this is my lesbian agenda)

Literally only two characters have canon ages (Jack at 17 and Les at 9). The actors in livesies are obviously a lot older than the actors in 92sies so i’m kinda like. averaging the ages out lmao

that being said, a lot of the kids’ daemons wouldn’t be settled so i think this will just focus on the ones whose would be

also i don’t know the name of all the newsies i didnt get sucked TOO deep into the fandom in 2012 or 2017, so i’m playing catch up like a full decade later, pls be gentle with me

OH ALSO probably no daemon names bc i tend to put a fair amount of research into the names and i don’t have the brain cells for that right now lol

ANYWAY

JACK -- francis “jack kelly” sullivan. loyal, warm, welcoming, protective, friendly, flirty, desperately wants to be selfish but knows in his heart of hearts he can’t. street smart but maybe not too book smart. clever, quick thinker, dreamer (”i can’t spend my whole life dreaming/even thought that’s all i seem inclined to do”)

His daemon’s a blue jay, for sure. look at those core traits:

socially flexible extrovert -- out going, loyal to his boys but still open to new friendships/connections (he looked at davey and went “oh im gonna be his best friend.” was ready and willing to work with the other boroughs during the strike. the charismatic leader who makes everyone feel welcome and listened to

aggressive/confrontational -- my man started a strike. duh.

bold/adventurous -- his whole santa fe thing, wants to DO THINGS. i had more words to say here but they have abandoned me.

resourceful/innovative -- decided to start a strike after, like, 10 seconds of thinking. after flirting with katherine, his whole “today we stopped the scabbers, tomorrow we stop the wagons” speech (i definitely misremembered the first half). though he Does have to be bullied into it, he does know each step the strike needs to take, and knows how to do it even after plan a fails. the whole once and for all/using pulitzer’s own fucking printing press to print the children’s crusade?? c’mon man, who would’ve thought of it

shrewd -- observant!! sees what’s place in front of him and immediately knows how to work with it. looks at his boys and knows immediately what they need!

communicative -- okay, he has A Little trouble with this, but he’s also a 17 year old boy. they’d rather die than communicate. HOWEVER. he goes himself to speak with spot conlon and the brooklyn newsies, aka the most important allies they’ve got. turns davey’s big/expressive words into those the other newsies would understand (jack would’ve explained what auspicious meant. i know he would’ve)

status-orientated -- i’m interpreting this differently than i’m probably meant to. i think he’s more status AWARE. he knows who to go after for the biggest impact. he knows the leaders of the other boroughs and how to sweet talk them. he knows that going after weasel and the delanceys ultimately accomplishes nothing and he has to go straight to the top, etc etc

DAVID -- davey jacobs. one strong breeze away from a panic attack. SO good at hiding it. yknow the song razzle dazzle from chicago, that’s essentially “if you’re really good at making people think you know what you’re doing, they won’t stop to consider you’re full of shit” that’s kinda davey. he’s the most educated of the newsies and uses that to his advantage. talks himself out of trouble, which would be better if he hadn’t talked himself INTO the trouble in the first place. one day, like, 2 years into him being a newsie, race stops and is like “hey. do we even know davey’s favorite color?” is so good at letting people think they know all about him without actually giving away the actual deep knowledge of himself. he’s so tired. he’s not the group mom, he’s the exhausted uncle who was asked to babysit for a day that turned into him adopting the fucking kids.

okay, i’m torn between two, but I think caracal is my ultimate decision (the giant otter shrew was my other choice, if anyone cares)

socially tolerant introvert -- he’ll step forward as the co-leader of the manhattan boys during the strike, but by god is gonna have a panic attack about it later. he understands it’s important, though, that he put the idea in jack’s head and that jack relies on him to be the brains to his brawn. besides, it’s not hard to stand up for the newsies when he genuinely likes the kids (yes, even albert. it surprised him, too). after the strike, he’s perfectly content to let jack go back to sole leader and race back to second-in-command

adaptable -- went from schoolboy to newsie to strike leader in less than 24 hours. he showed up for his first day of selling papes. went to bed. showed up for his second day. saw the prices went up. made the mistake of saying the word “strike” around jack. suddenly is running a strike. and my man Did Not Falter

sensing/aware -- knows exactly what to say to boost the newsies (”seize the day”, anyone?). he can take stock of a situation in, like, .02 seconds and know how to move from there

communicative/expressive -- he’s called the walking mouth. need i say more.

confident/assertive -- during “world will know” he joins jack up on the scaffolding to get the chalk from the guy who writes out the headlines. when jack’s aggressiveness didn’t work, davey stepped up and talked the guy into stepping aside. just because he’s anxious doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to project confidence (it helps that the newsies all have his back and hype him up)

opportunistic -- like. literally everything that happens. something or someone stumbles, he steps right up and takes over. jack scabs? well, fuck him i’m the leader now. also during “watch what happens (reprise)” when jack is like “joe’s a jerk/he’s a rattlesnake” davey is IMMEDIATE with the “you’re right!/and you know why a snake starts to rattle?” like “oop jackie said something i can use against him! haha!”

focused/patient -- literally wwhr again!! jack is being bitter and refusing to help and davey’s like “well, i’m gonna go win a strike soooo”

a lot of the implied/negotiable traits fit really well too

KATHERINE -- katherine pulitzer plumber. could’ve let her father pave the way to her future, but went and got it for herself. refused to let herself stay in the social pages. hell, she decided she wanted a CAREER and WENT OUT AND GOT IT despite it being 1899!! (”a girl? it’s a girl! how the hell? is that even legal???”). smart as a whip (davey fully believes she’s smarter than him, and he’s right!)

i do kinda like the idea of her having one of those prissy-looking white cats with the long hair, mostly because the kat/kitty jokes would be hilarious. however, katherine herself isn’t prissy, so i ultimately don’t think it’d work.

she would be a black-billed magpie (although i think an argument could be made for black-winged kite)

extroverted/socially flexible -- she’s a reporter, she’s gotta be out there making friends and shaking hands. she’s literally friends with other children of newspaper tycoons AND the newsies. nobody is wrong as a friend

opportunistic/adaptable -- it’s not said How she first hears about the strike, but it’s safe to assume it’s her father. she bursts into jacobi’s deli and is like “hi i’m covering your strike now, good luck getting rid of me.” she saw an opportunity to FINALLY get out of the social pages, and by god is gonna grab it with both hands

confident -- i mean, look at her. katherine knows who she is and what she wants, and she doesn’t really give a shit what everyone else thinks

proactive/short-term planner -- listen. she’s confident, she knows what she wants. i NEVER said she thought out all the steps before hand. she’s just VERY good at making people believe she’s got it all figured out (much like davey)

manipulative -- okay, this is another one where i’m definitely not taking it the way i should. BUT. i mean. she’s a reporter. what reporter hasn’t twisted some words (”a little hyperbole never hurt anyone”)

cooperative -- literally working with a small army of newsies to spread their cause

perceptive -- again. reporter. She Sees All. yknow how moms always convince their kids they have eyes on the back of their head? that’s katherine. mush is convinced she knows when he’s lying. she doesn’t, but he overcompensates for it that it becomes obvious

again, a lot of the inferred and negotiable traits also fit

RACETRACK -- racetrack higgins. this lanky motherfucker. he’s jack’s second in command so i do think he’s one of the older newsies, mayyyybe 16? i think he was only like 13 in 92sies, but meh. canon is a toy box and i’m a destructive toddler. i really like the headcanon going around that he’s a wiz with numbers and just assumes everyone else is too. he’s a bitch (affectionate) and sarcastic and literally doesn’t even sell in manhattan, but he’s ride or die for his boys.

his daemon is a raccoon, and he was furious when he settled (i. did not mean to type he, been having a lot of trouble typing today, but yknow what fuck it race has a male daemon. fuck you thats why) like. “people already see us as literaly garbage, why the fuck did you have to settle as a raccoon are you fucking kidding me?”

independent -- again. his second-in-command of the manhattan newsies, yet sells every day in brooklyn.i cannot for the life of me find it, or even remember Which actor it was, but one of the guys who played race said that he does his own thing and doesn’t keep himself stuck in manhattan (really takes “we goes were we wishes/we as free as fishes” literally)

socially flexible -- again, will make friends with kids from other boroughs (fully unrelated but i have not spelled boroughs correctly once in this post, shoutout to spell check lmao), while still being loyal to manhattan. might be a little in love with a newsie from brooklyn, who knows! not him! definitely doesn’t know that for sure!

conflict-avoidant -- look. he’ll roughhouse with the guys and get in stupid squabbles with other newsies and throw a punch or two when he absolutely has to, but he’s not a fighter. much like davey, he prefers to talk his way out of the trouble he talked himself into. he wasn’t immediately on board with the strike, seemed like a lot of trouble for AT BEST no change

intuitive/curious -- look, a man doesn’t walk across an entire bridge every day because he’s not curious about what’s going on in other places. he’s jack’s eyes and ears, because he’s just a fucking nosy little shit who wants to know everybody’s business

adaptable/opportunistic -- yall sensing a theme here? (”got a feeling ‘bout a headline/i’ll make up a headline/and i’ll say anything i hafta”). after jack scabs and fucks off, he has to step up with davey. really wish there was time in the movie OR musical for a scene about it, but davey needed support and race was right there to help

unambitious -- look. he’s pretty sure he’s only jack’s second because he’s been there the longest. he doesn’t know why jack picked him otherwise. he’s not gunning for leadership, he’s perfectly happy with where he is and what he’s go

SPOT -- sean “spot” conlon (yes i know sean is kinda a fanon name. i like it). the man, the myth, the legend. the reason everyone’s so scared of brooklyn. abrasive, rude, violent, looks out for his boys first and himself second, didn’t beat the shit out of race for selling in his borough.

i typically give assholes with hearts of gold pitbull daemons bc i think it’s funny, but like. pitbulls weren’t considered “bully” breeds in 1899 (i have a rant abt dogs being called “bully” breeds but i’ll keep my mouth shut) and idk what would’ve been. he definitely has a canine though.

this is a bit of a different analysis, because i’m using both the daemon forum AND wikipedia to get the time-appropriate facts, but i’m feeling english bulldog

in historical record, bulldogs were used for bull-baiting (which is insane. these small ass dogs baiting LITERAL BULLS. they really just did Whatever in the past, huh). they were athletic, with powerful jaws, high stamina, and short fuses. modern bulldogs are, uh. a little goofier and decidedly less athletic. poor spot. at least a lot of traditional domestic dog traits still apply

playing fast and loose with the core traits from tdf here, but self-assured/confident -- did yall see “brooklyn’s here”? my man has the cockiest grin i’ve ever seen in my LIFE

stubborn/determined -- sticks to his word of waiting to see if jack would fold before getting brooklyn involved in the strike (and he was right!! jack fucking folded!!). once he makes a decision, he sticks to it. it’s fucking impossible to change his mind (race finds it charming; hotspot finds it makes him wanna bash his head against a wall)

under the overview section on tdf, the “social” and “stress” sections fit very well. while spot has the WORST rb and comes off as cold towards others, he cares DEEPLY abt brooklyn and puts their needs first, no matter what. he’s loyal and caring to those who he claims as His

he’s thick-skinned, adaptable, and willing to forgive jack once jack comes back with a plan and a new fire under his ass

i just processed giving the kid named SPOT a dog daemon. god i’m hilarious.

CRUTCHIE -- Charles “Crutchie” Morris. i honestly don’t know what daemon he’d have!! he’s kind, loyal, understanding, an eternal optimist. he also lets himself get stepped over, lets others take advantage of that kindness. stands up for everybody but his damn self.

WAIT okay actually, i think an african wild dog would be perfect

social extrovert -- he’s so friendly!! he likes making other people smile, he’s always there to hype his friends up, he’ll do whatever and talk to whomever he has to to help his friends

conflict avoidant/passive/tolerant -- look. he talks a big game (”y’see this mister pulitzer?!”) but he knows he’s not a fighter. jack’s the brawn. he’s willing to let bygones be bygones. maybe roughhouse with the guys a bit, but nothing intense or serious

determined/hardworking/ambitious -- people look and talk down to him because of his disability, but he doesn’t let that stop him. he’s out selling every day with jack, he’s right out there with everyone during the strike. he doesn’t let anyone stop him from whatever he sets his mind to

cooperative/caring -- i’m putting these two together because i think, for him, they’re hand in hand. he has a massive heart; he cares SO MUCH and wants his friends -- his family -- to be safe and happy. like i said, he’ll work with whomever he has to in order to insure that happens

people pleaser/doormat -- let crutchie be mean 2023!!!! he’s always looking out for the others, he doesn’t have any left to look out for himself!!!!
