hi! can you do denki x black fem reader who has long thick locs? just general headcanons and fluff about denki x black female reader please (also for some more insight can reader have water quirk but like it’s not basic and is very powerful)
(have a good day/night)
such a cute idea !! i hope you have a good day/night too
headcanons ☆ denki & your locs
Tumblr media
ship denki kaminari x black!fem!reader
warnings none !! pure fluff <3
a/n as a disclaimer, i’m white; i ended up doing a ton of research about the history of locs and how to take care of them (i used this website as a guide while writing the headcanons). if i end up getting anything wrong, please let me know so i can correct it!
also i feel like this definitely could have been written better. i’ve been having a creative block lately, but i still really wanted to write this. i hope it’s still enjoyable !!
Tumblr media
★ when you passed the entrance exams, you were expecting ua to have a strict dress code, which includes hairstyles.
★ luckily the ua dress code is really flexible !!
★ due to your hydrokinesis quirk causing humidity problems, you found it better to have your hair in locs.
★ you only had locs for about five or six months, so they are still locing, meaning that most of them are quite puffy and thick.
★ 90% of the time your locs are down, but during training sessions (either during class time or when you’re training with denki) you like to put your hair up!
★ you never really let people touch your hair, but one day you needed help with detoxing your locs.
★ of course the only person who was in the dorms at the same time was denki.
★ since you trust him enough, you asked if he could help, to which he happily agreed!
★ you spent at least ten minutes trying to explain to denki how the process works, but he kept getting confused.
★ “but why are you using baking soda? i don’t think it tastes good with the vinegar.” “…what do you think baking soda is?” “…” “denki, do you eat baking soda?” “can we start the detoxing now?”
★ when you’re soaking your dreads, you get denki to massage the locs to thoroughly cleanse them.
★ you swear that if the whole hero thing doesn’t work out for him, he should be a masseuse. he doesn’t just massage your locs, but also your scalp.
★ so considering that you have to not move for upwards of twenty minutes, he really helps with relaxing.
★ when it came time to condition the dreads, he also does it for you. throughout the detoxing process, you can honestly just relax and let denki do all the work, following your instructions.
★ an extra thing he does during detoxing is compliment your hair and ask how you loc your hair and maintain them. again, you explain and again, denki asks many questions. you think it’s cute how hyper he is about your hair!
★ of course, after you finish, you thank him and he gets all blushy while assuring that it’s “no problem!”
★ you still don’t let people touch your hair. except for one exception: denki!
Tumblr media
again, please lmk if i got anything wrong !! i wanna make sure it’s accurate 🫶

Tagged by @messiahzzz – thank you! I don’t think I’ve ever really talked about Tynera on my blog, but I did promise myself I would share more of my creations in 2024, soooo...
Tumblr media
A quick rundown – she’s a seldarine drow who turned her back on Lolth when she found her way to the cult of Lathander, and subsequently became a cleric of his.
In BG3, she chooses to see the tadpole as a test to show that she can persevere through adversity and bring light and new beginning to the darkness, as Lathander teaches. She made generally “good” choices and romanced Lae’zel. As of the epilogue, the two of them are living together close to where Shadowheart made her cottage, raising Xan as their son and supporting the liberation of the Githyanki people from afar.
Basics
- Full name: Tynera Maerret
- Gender: cis female
- Sexuality: bisexual with a strong tendency towards women
- Pronouns: She/her
Other
- Family: House Maerret – a minor noble drow house I created
Father: Kinastyrr Osviir
Mother: Laraea Maerret
Grandmother/main childhood attachment figure: Neerlinva Maerret
Birthplace: Maerimydra
- Job: Cleric of Lathander – I imagine that she’s pretty far down any hierarchy, as she hasn’t been a cleric very long yet.
- Phobias: if any, a light case of agoraphobia
- Guilty pleasures: spending days on end in luxury baths, expensive jewellery. Also whatever the Faerûnian equivalent of violent slasher movies is.
- Hobbies: dancing, singing, poetry performance – she doesn’t really write herself, but she enjoys reciting poetry with friends
Morals
- Alignment: Lawful Good
 - Sins: Pride, Greed, Gluttony
- Virtues: Determination, Idealism, Compassion, Courage
This or That
- Introvert / Extrovert
- Organized / Disorganized
- Close-minded / Open-minded
- Calm / Anxious / Restless
- Disagreeable / Agreeable / In between
 - Cautious / Reckless / In between
- Patient / Impatient / In between
- Outspoken / Reserved / In between
- Leader / Follower / Flexible
- Empathetic / Unempathetic / In between
- Optimist / Pessimist / Realist
- Traditional / Modern / In between
- Hard-working / Lazy
Relationships
- OTP: Lae’zel/Tynera — it started as a fling, but honestly neither of them is made for casual arrangements. Tynera fell very quickly for Lae’zel’s resilience and devotion. It takes longer for Lae’zel to allow herself to recognise her feelings, but once she does, she melts into Tynera's warmth like a cat basking in a ray of sunshine.
Lae’zel calls Tynera, as in canon, “zhak vo'nfynh duj” – my joy. Tynera calls Lae’zel “sussun ussta” – my light.
- Acceptable Ships: none.
- OT3: see above – Tynera would probably be open to having sex with others, but she respects Lae’zel’s wishes for exclusivity. On an emotional level, she is also monogamous.
- Brotp: Yes ->
-  Gale/Tynera— they are both fairly passionate in their respective fields and are glad that they don’t have to hold back in the other’s presence. Gale’s more relaxed level-headedness helps Tynera shed some of her more impulsive and judgemental tendencies. Likewise, Gale basks in Tynera’s unwavering support and affection.
- Shadowheart/Tynera — In the beginning, they butt heads a lot, since their gods are explicit enemies. Over the course of the game, they start to realise that they have much more in common than sets them apart. Shadowheart helps Tynera find ways to incorporate her faith in their daily lives, when they are in the shadow-cursed lands, where it’s difficult to perform sun-related rituals. They also share a taste for the macabre.
- Notp: none, she gets along with almost anyone. Though, now that I’ve finished her PT, I don’t think it makes sense for her to end up with anyone of the companions but Lae’zel.
Tagging: @faerielli, @zerfindung, @kaldurcalm, @lewdisescariot, @ghastlytofu, @athousandcowboys and whoever also wants to do this!

Hello! I was hoping to get a romantic matchup for the mcu! If you aren’t doing them right now, feel free to ignore this! <3
Basics: My name is Bianca, my pronouns are she/her, and I am straight. I am 5’8”, ENTP. Chaotic, sarcastic, dramatic, and a raging feminist.
Looks: Triangle body type, pale, medium length wolf cut with slight red highlights and curtain bangs, high cheekbones, a big-ish nose and hazel eyes. My profile picture shows my face if anything!
Me as a person: I am pretty social (or at least social enough to have a few close friends) and love being alone to have time to myself for reading, writing, drawing, playing video games, and listening to music. My music taste is just anything, but I do enjoy all kinds of rock, rap, and indie. I would like to think of myself as a really funny person and can make most people laugh. My humour can get pretty dark, sometimes joking about my trauma and insecurities and such. My fashion sense is also most things, but specifically 80s/90s retro-like clothing. I also live in platform shoes they are my life, my heart, my breath.
Fun Facts/Miscellaneous: I am Pagan and have an unhealthy obsession with collecting rocks and shells. Romanian is my first language (which is used as Sokovian in fics for some reason) I am really good at analyzing people and their body language. I can easily cry on command and am really flexible yet can’t touch my toes when standing or sitting. I stay up until 4 every night and wake up at 11-12. I’m a big over-thinker and have ADHD.
In short, I’m a pretty difficult person to deal with but worth your time to be around
(sorry for the long description!!)
Hello dear 💖, thanks for your request.
For marvel I ship you with:
Tony stark🤑
Tumblr media
So your very similar to him, although the man does come off as arrogant and up himself. He is actually quite loyal and would definitely save all his time with you.
You were his assistant in terms of how you met, your both party goers although you aren't exactly like him.
Tony is very outgoing and he would host parties dedicated to you.
He has the same music taste and would blast it out loud in the work shop.
Your secretly a healer that has powers.
You often also hang out with spiderman, he did have a little bit of a fling for you.
I can picture you and Tony just hugging from behind and cooking breakfest on rainy days.
Natasha can be quite flirty even if it's for a mission which causes confliction.
She states he's a friend.
Tony would throw himself just to protect you.
If you get married it would be at his base and he would have your kid with his hair and your eyes.
Anyways that's all I have for now:

Thoughts and comments on the Rattleware Cupping Brewer
Thoughts and comments on the Rattleware Cupping Brewer I saw one of these brewers in a promotional giveaway/contest and was intrigued. Here is what it looks like. The purpose of the brewer is to make cupping more sanitary and less communal. The coffee is brewed in a larger batch and then is portioned out into individual cupping glasses for people to cup on their own vs everyone dipping a spoon in the same bowl. It makes about 10oz of drinkable brewed coffee so it could be used as a regular immersion brewer for one if you are so inclined. The directions state to add 30g of coffee to the brewer and then add 500g of hot water. Let that sit for four minutes, then break the crust. You need to then let the silt settle to the top of the bed of grounds however, the directions do not state how long that should be. The silt should all fall through the narrow throat at the bottom of the brewer. Then, you carefully place the stopper over the opening to the ground bed. You need to CAREFULLY hold this stopper in place as you decant the coffee into individual glasses or a mug. When I brewed my first batch, I added a saucer on top of the brewer for the first four minutes and then placed it back after crust breaking and spooning off the foam/grounds. I then set a three minute timer for the silt to settle. The result was a hot cup of decent immersion brewed coffee with very little silt. The coffee was still a bit cloudy, but it was a nice immersion brew. For cleanup, you remove the stopper, then swirl the remaining liquid to loosen up the grounds and then pour into a sink strainer. You will need one of those gooseneck flexible cleaning brushes to clean that cavity at the bottom. You could also use a splash of urn cleaner as well. Since it's immersion, there is a film of oil on the glass after brewing so skipping scrubbing is not an option.Pros: Nice little personal brewer with no filters you need to buy -- so sustainable. Produces a great cup of immersion brewed coffee with minimal silt (less than you get with Sibarist filters). Also, a very sanitary way of performing a group cupping.Cons: Very fragile. You can easily crush this thing in your hands if you are too rough. The first one I bought arrived completely destroyed/shattered. Had to file a return claim with Amazon. Second one arrived in tact but the glass is very thin. Just wondering how long it will last me considering my clumsiness. Cleaning requires a flexible brush. Although ideal for showcasing one coffee for a tasting, it would be very expensive to have a fleet of these fragile vessels in a lab environment. An official cupping requires five sample batches per coffee on the table. So that would be $210 (without shipping) in equipment per flight of coffee. So great for coffee sampling, but for by-the-book cupping -- not so much.Other notes: Cost me $41 USD (delivered) from Amazon. Do the math on deeply discounted ones on amazon since you may have to pay significant shipping charges. I think Rattleware charges $40 but shipping is extra. Also, this is basically the Hoffmann FP technique but a bit cleaner and will allow you to decant without stirring up the grounds. I definitely recommend putting a saucer on top of the brewer while steeping and settling. It retains a lot of the heat. I’m doing a little Minecraft ‘hostile’ mob headcanons series, and I’m gonna do Endermen first cause I have the most headcanons for them, okay? Okay, lets go. Enderman eyes are on the range of blues to pinks in terms of color, and each color is unique. Not only that, but they work like cat eyes. When they’re docile, or when they’re excited about something, they look like dumbasses. (Cute dumbasses, but still) Endermen also have small axolotl-like gill-bits below their ears, however rather than using them to breath, they operate more like cat whiskers, able to sense temporal rifts so they can teleport between dimensions without the aid of a Stronghold’s portal, or a Nether portal. (Not saying cats can travel between dimensions though LMAO) These bits are also the same color as their eyes.
Enderman are OBVIOUSLY draconic with snake-like scales, but they have fine (Almost like down) feathers that run from their head, down their back, and to short (only knee length) tails.  Endermen are digitigrade and have deer-like hooves (Cus deer are also cute)
These feathers are in the shades from blues to pinks/reds, just like their eyes. Many style their hair with beads (made from metals or even shulker shells) and it’s another signifier for who an Enderman is to others.
Endermen don’t get names until they are older, and they choose their name. It’s a very important process for Enderman as until they choose their name they are simply referred to by their birth order (And thusly until then they are unable to style their own hair or clothing.) Some choose things relating to the void, others the very Endstone they stand on, others the stars within the void, it’s a toss up of what they choose and what it may relate to. The clothes they make are out of the bark of Chorus trees, the bark being very stretchy, flexible, and thin. It can also be layered to make armor similar to leather (Where they normally stamp their name into.) They can also make an ice-cream equivalent by mixing mashed up Chorus fruit and the softer inner Chorus tree and leaving it to freeze for some time within End stone “freezers”  Endermen have small fangs akin to fruit bats so they can pierce the tough flesh of Chorus fruit (They’re omnivores and can also eat Shulkers, which I imagine taste like oysters or clams, but they prefer Chorus fruit) The dragon is their matriarch, obviously, but rather than being a typical queen who makes laws, she simply protects the Endermen from those she sees as a danger to them (aka, the player.)
The dragon also lives for centuries, and her egg takes nearly her entire life after she lays it to hatch into the next queen (Who due to the End crystals, has the previous queen’s memories.) Endermen actually communicate via telepathy when you look into their eyes (Which is why looking into one without warning sends them into a frenzy, they can’t read the player’s mind) why do Endermen speak though? They’ve picked it up from other players before, and know that players are unable to understand their telepathy. Ender pearls are exactly that, pearls, they’re collected from Shulkers and when an Enderman wears one (Be it a ring, a necklace, or imbeded into metal from the Overworld) it grants them the ability to teleport (The reason they only need one is due to their telepathy as well.)   Elytra are coveted items as many are made from the skin of the Ender Dragon’s wings when she dies. They take her remains and reuse them as a way to honor her. Her bones are crafted into many heads for ships, her bones are also used to make beads (The oldest Endermen have them and are revered) they even take her skin and use it for the end ships as well.  The Endermen seen in the Overworld and Nether are basically scouts or travelers who collect items from both of those places for various reasons (blaze powder is good for many things, including keeping the End ships aloft) The End portal was also created by Endermen who teleported to the Overworld by accident, and met the ones who would eventually become the zombie variants, and the villagers, so began trading with them.

Personally idk why disablighty headcanons should be a issue? I mean like, anyone who basically comes onto this blog has to understand that this is fandom works and we're using personas. Sure there's a small chance things could be misinformed or misrepresented but most of the time it wont be harmful, a small mistake and shouldn't matter. Plus idk why that would be worse then people sending in 'oh yeah this character gets traumatize over and over again!' Hope you don't mind me sharing my thoughts
I do agree that the line between what I'm willing to post and what I'm not is very difficult to draw. I do occasionally delete asks that lean too heavy on emotional aspects as well, but in general making a boundary with something like this is very tricky. My main concern is when people start using things like disabilities or trauma to add "flavour" to someone's characterization rather than respecting them as real things people have to deal with every day. It's hard for me to tell whether someone is doing that or not (and I am in no way implying that that's what you're doing!), so creating a more concrete boundary like this is the easiest way for me to regulate that. (Plus, I think a persona is a bit of a different thing than a character, since it's so closely linked to a real individual. That is why I'm uncomfortable with shipping and other headcanons that seem a bit too personal for my taste)
Once again, this is really only related to my own comfort level and what I am willing to curate on this blog. I highly encourage you to be at creative as you want with your own headcanons! You may not agree with me, but I hope you understand where I'm coming from now. In general I try to stay very flexible with my opinion on most things, so I may change my mind at some point in the future, but for now this is where my comfort level is at.

Hello! I read through your matchups and I want to say they're rly cute :>> It's so cool about how much effort you put into them so I was wondering if its okay if I could request a Haikyuu matchup? (I hope its okay I submitted it)
My name's Alicia, I'm Bi but I'm more attracted to guys and I'm female(she/her). My sun sign is Gemini and my rising is Aries, INTP, ambivert and a Slytherin.
My personality, positives, negatives and such: Around new people I'd say I'm much calmer, polite and quite closed off. Some of my friends say I come off as a bit aloof to certain people or strangely kind to others. To my surprise I've had some people say I'm intimidating (like bruh why??)  In all honesty my personality really differs with who I'm with. When I'm with my friends though I'm much more outgoing and loud, I really enjoy going out with just different small groups of friends even if its just for a small lunch or anything - I just really enjoy being around those who both make me laugh and who I can make laugh. I can be really sarcastic and not afraid to have some playful banter aka: who can have the most creative insults - even if they don't make sense. I'm smart in things I enjoy and can go on and on about things i'm passionate about. I'm always looking out for my friends, making sure they don't stuff up, praising their achievements and putting them before myself. I'm pretty open-minded and flexible, say if one of my friends has a friend I dislike I'll always act nice and rarely complain and I'm good at adapting to different environments. Although I am rarely happy with my looks and I don't like trying new things with a fear of stuffing up or failing ESPECIALLY with team sports bruh. I have a bad habit of staying up until ungodly hours of the morning and not waking up until the afternoon.
Appearance: I'm 5'2/5'3-ish, half Indonesian-half British/White/Whatever, I have shoulder length fluffy/messy dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, i have a beauty spot near my nose on the right side of my face, tan-olive ish skin.
Music taste: I typically listen to pop, indie pop and sometimes alternative rock. My favourite songs though would have to be Left to Right (Marteen), Act my Age (One direction) and Scrawny (Wallows). Two playlist names I have are "Solo survival in minecraft vibes" and "pain" - Theyre weird ik LMAO
In a partner: I look for someone who can take a joke and can handle my sudden chaotic decisions and mood swings. Someone who will communicate like please tell me if im doing something wrong or right for the love of god- It would be great if they didn't mind my random touches or signs of affection and it would be cool if we could play games together :D My love language would have to be touch and words of affirmation if that helps.
Anddd thats it, I'm so so sorry if its too long and please take your time and dont overwhelm youself :((  Thank you for your time and don't forget to drink some water!!
hiii! omg thank you so much! that’s so nice🥺 i ship you withh...bokuto!!
Tumblr media
ok this is also kinda a case of opposites attract, or at least at first glance it definitely is. bokuto is so loud and extroverted and outgoing so it’s really appreciated how youre more calm and able to somewhat tame him down a bit. he actually got so interested in you because of that, just like with akaashi he was drawn to the opposite personality to him. hes also gonna try and open you up more instead of being so closed off, like its his own little personal challenge to make you more comfortable with opening up, and once you do he’s vv happy. he loves how kind you are as well because i don’t think this bby could handle someone mean, he just needs love and support and then he’s yours forever. of course he loves playful teasing (he denies that he likes it directed at him but he actually loves it) but he wants your kinda subtle niceness in a partner. the way you put others beofre yourself helps him a lot as well because he needs and wants a lot of care so the fact that you’ll provide that for him is amazing and basically ideal. however he makes SURE you take care of yourself too, like he will not let you forget about your own needs and will make you put yourself first sometimes any way he can. sure it might take him a while to figure out your doing that, but once he does he’s gonna look out for you even closer after that. he loves how open minded you are too because it would be difficult if you weren’t open to the things he likes, like he wouldn’t be able to survive without your support. the positivity you show for the things he’s passionate about just makes him fall in love and adore you a million times more, if that was even possible.
oh my gosh he LOVES how when youre with him your whole personality just switches. no not with everything about you switches but when you become outgoing and loud he just can’t stop swooning because he loves how much laughter and enthusiasm he can hear from you which he doesn’t usually hear. it’s just when you both are loud and outgoing it’s so chaotic for everyone else but for you two it’s just fun and carefree. he’s kinda drawn to your sarcastic side because that’s not really him, and he just thinks it’s so funny when your a little annoyed and end up throwing some sarcastic snapback to someone. like i said before he loves having playful banter with you because it’s really fun, but he denies that he likes it when it’s aimed towards him. however he definitely likes it he just pretends he doesn’t. oh my goodness i can’t even explain how much he adores it when you ramble on and on about something you’re passionate about. seriously like he absolutely loves it. he thinks it’s so adorable how you get so excited and peppy when he brings up a topic you love and you can just talk about it for days on end. especially when he can see that sparkle in your eyes and just the sound of your voice, it just makes him fall in love all over again. also, he would CRUSH any insecurity you ever had, especially if it’s about your looks. he’s ADORES any body type and body size, beaty marks, skin color, hair type, height, body proportions, anything about you he will completely love. he will support and compliment you to no end to make you see how perfect you are, he will make sure you know your beauty.
i feel like bokuto really fits the description of what you like as well. he LOVES to make you laugh and is always throwing jokes around and he’s a very goofy and laughy guy, so he will laugh at your jokes all the time. he values communication as well because he doesn’t really understand when people give him subtle signs or hints, like he just won’t figure it out unless you tell him upright. so he’ll do the same to you naturally because he just assumes that you value that as well. he’s very spontaneous and just kinda goes with the flow of everything so sudden chaotic decisions wouldnt bother him a bit, actually he lives for them. he also has mood swings as well so he would totally understand what your going through when you have one and you both would know how to help eachother. bokuto might get a little offended if you playfully insult things like how he’s doing in your relationship, his playing skills, or something like that, but once you reassure him that it’s completely a joke he warms up to it. mostly everything else he understands is just teasing and the only reason he ACTS offended is because he wants you to believe he doesn’t like it, but trust me you both are very aware that he in fact loves it since he’s very easy to read. lastly, he loves loves loves random touches of affection, he seriously can get enough affection. please randomly touch him, even if it’s holding pinkies or kissing his cheek for .2 seconds he will s w o o n. here comes blushy and flustered bokuto, have fun :)) 💕
scenarios with the two of you:
•you just waiting for bokuto home and when he does he literally tackles you in a bear hug. he rambles on and on about his day and asks you about yours while also complimenting you somehow and your just sitting there giggling at his normal energized antics. he doesn’t let you leave your spot either so you two just stay there cuddling for the rest of the night.
•it was around midnight and bokuto texted you asking you if you wanted to go on a walk, obviously you were tired and confused but you could just see his pout through the screen so you went. you went on a walk while talking, well mostly him talking, and going to a random destination you didn’t know of and i’m not sure he did either. when you got too tired he carried you too(and don’t worry he’s strong as shit already and thinks it’s super easy to carry you :)) i mean look at those biceps-)
•it was in the middle of summer and you were having a bad day so bokuto took you out to someplace you didn’t know of. it ended up being a field and so you two lyed on the grass while enjoying looking at the stars and the perfect summer night breeze paired with the heat. you were playing music like scrawny by wallows and can i call you tonight by dayglow and both of your were silent, a very rare thing for both of you, especially bokuto. he wasn’t really looking at the stars though, he was looking at you.
i hope you liked this!! i loved writing it and you’re soso nice thank you for worrying about me🥺 have an amazing day and take care of yourself!! <333

Share the Bad Batch headcanons! :D
Well, I’m pretty sure you’ve seen them before, but I’m happy to share them here too. I wrote most of this in 2017, based on the reels, but I still have them as my headcanons.
- None of the Bad Batch are pure human. They’ve got DNA from other species mixed in to give them their specific abilities.
- They were created as experiments by the Kaminoans to see if they could improve on Fett. All four of them were engineered for their roles, and they were trained to do them, but they were put into stasis before Obi-Wan arrived because the Kaminoans realized that ordinary clones were good enough and less resource intensive to grow (and didn’t have the strange quirks the Bad Batch had). The Jedi only found out about them after 99’s death, where they went “Wait, do you have any more weird clones like 99?” and the Kaminoans were all like “Well…” It took a lot of effort to actually get them out into the field, and that only happened near the end of the war when the situation became more desperate.
~ 99 is also an experiment, on how quickly they could age the clones, and he was kept around by the Kaminoans so they could observe the effects of the increased rate of aging.
~ The other clones call them defective and mutants because that’s what they were raised to believe all the ‘different’ clones were, even though in actuality they were purposefully created.
- All of them have issues that in some way relates to their engineering:
~ Hunter is in charge because he’s the most stable emotionally and doesn’t get distracted as easily as the others. He also has super senses; he can see further (and probably in a wider range of the electromagnetic spectrum), hear more, smell more and taste more. He can also sense electromagnetic radiation (so he’s part shark…) and can always tell what’s magnetic north. But because his senses are so sensitive they can easily become overwhelmed by too much stimulation, which means bright lights/loud sounds etc can easily disorient him. Also being around strong electronic radiation is uncomfortable for him and he prefers bland food. He can see in the dark, though, so it’s not all bad. He also is naturally faster & more flexible than the average human (that’s why he’s a stabby ninja), but tends to strain himself.
~ Wrecker is super strong and extremely more durable than the average human (his tissues can take stresses that would destroy that of an ordinary human’s). However he has trouble controlling his emotions (not just his temper) and is not as mentally and emotionally mature as his brothers. He also is not quite as clever, even if he’s not dumb. He just acts childish because he thinks more like a child than the others (and he enjoys being silly).
~ Crosshair is an impossibly good sniper, has great concentration and can run quite fast (because he’s tall). However he has trouble expressing emotions (that’s why he’s so grumpy), struggles to interact with people that aren’t his squad, is slightly long-sighted and is physically a bit weaker. He doesn’t really get emotions sometimes, which is why he can say heartless things without thinking it through (though often he’s being a jerk on purpose :P). His lack of emoting allows him to fall asleep easily, which is why he tends to fall asleep while they’re flying.
~ Tech naturally understands computers and automatically collects information in his brain, as well as does maths on everything. Ask him a question and he’ll probably know the answer. Unfortunately he’s prone to information overload, where he become frozen as he tries to absorb everything and work things out. During these freezes he becomes insensible to the world as his brain literally can’t handle any more information. Sometimes he even freezes mid conversation. He can also become deaf to the world when he’s focused on something. He’s physically weaker, and because he’s shorter than the others it takes him more effort to keep up because he has to jump further and run faster. But he also is a great shot because he automatically calculates the weakness of whatever he’s fighting. He’s also pretty friendly and calm compared to everyone else.
- The physical issues are managed by their armour, which is able to screen out things that will overwhelm them and keep them focused (that’s why Tech always wears his glasses). Also, they have learnt to tolerate things that would have overwhelmed them in the past, so the issues are less obvious now-days.
- When they were kids the issues were worst. Wrecker would be happy one moment, angry and destroying everything the next, then stricken with guilt at what he’d done because he lacked control. Crosshair could not express emotion and basically sat in a corner making everyone leave him alone. Tech would freeze all the time for several seconds, and his memory wasn’t that great as he kept getting overwhelmed. Hunter was extremely sensitive to any changes in the environment, and kept injuring himself as he tried to pull off crazy stunts. Having each other around really helped them learn to cope.
- They were quite naughty kids, and drove those in charge of training them up the wall. They were probably trained by whoever trained the clone commandos, given their specialized nature.
- They’re thieves. They steal things from both their enemies and other clones to modify their armour with, which is why it’s so unique. At the very least Tech steals stuff, it’s why he has all those pouches. They usually return things if asked nicely though.
- They like to watch the Holonet in general, but particularly enjoy badly made Sci-Fi B-movies. They laugh at how terrible they are.
- Wrecker, Crosshair and Tech easily get distracted, which makes getting prepared for a mission always a rush because they leave everything to the last minute.
- Hunter’s probably in charge because he beat them in some kind of contest (he probably cheated). However he really is the best qualified to lead them.
- There are some clones, that when they hear the Bad Batch is coming, run in the opposite direction. It’s a mystery how Cody can get along so well with them.
- The game Republic Commando indirectly inspired the Bad Batch, because they’re the most video game-y characters to not have a video game. If Delta Squad ever met them it would devolve into everyone trying to prove they’re better while Boss and Hunter just shake their heads in shame. (This is pure speculation, but Lucas was quite involved in giving the Delta Squad their personalities and I wouldn’t be surprised if he referenced them in the story meetings that lead to the development of The Bad Batch given the squad’s similarities.)
Also spoilers for the last episode:
- Echo probably suffers from nightmares relating to his capture and time in stasis.
- Tech enjoys messing around with Echo’s cybernetics. Echo has at least once woken up to find a leg missing and hidden somewhere on the ship. But Tech and Echo are buddies, so Echo usually doesn’t get too upset.
Edit: What happened to the formatting?! Fixed it but that was annoying.

The 8 Best Things About Dental Intraoral Scanners
Hey, have you ever heard about dental intraoral scanners? Yes, they are used to capture a direct optical impression. Moreover, project a light source onto the targeted object.
The scanners are developed to overcome the difficulties associated with conventional techniques. They are an electronic device that reproduces in 3D images. Moreover, allow the creation of a digital document. After discussing the meaning, its essential to know it’s different advantages when used in a dental clinic? How and for what it is used? What is the best intraoral scanner in the market? Challenges of intraoral scanners? Current medical applications? Tips and tricks for using the product?
Here is a brief description of all these queries-
How does a dental intraoral scanner work?
Dental intraoral scanners are used for various purposes such as-
They allow you to observe imperfections that require correct-alignment.
In the treatment of invisible aligners.
Partial obturators.
It captures optimal impressions on the patient’s jaws. You must pass the pencil over the gums and teeth of the patients. Finally, you will observe the model recreating itself in a three-dimensional image.
They are of 2 types and how they work depends on the type of intraoral scanner.
Photographic technology scanner- They capture images of the individual area to be scanned.
Video technology scanners- Their working is similar to a video camera, so the scanned areas are recorded.
How they help your dental clinic and the 8 best things about dental intraoral scanners-
Until now, the traditional system is used to represent the patient’s capacity. The system is both time consuming and uncomfortable for the patient.
Nowadays, the design of the models has been simplified because of intraoral scanners. The treatments now require less time as compared to the traditional model.
The 8 advantages offered by the intraoral scanners to your dental clinic-
Say goodbye to plaster- Intraoral scanner allows you to avoid the use of alginate.
Avoid discomfort to your patients- You can easily obtain the images without bothering the complaints about the smell or taste of silicone. It is annoying for both the patients (children’s and adults). It makes the process faster, pleasant and comfortable for your patient. Consequently, he/she will thank you for saving a part of his/her precious time.
Get high fidelity models- This is because, there are no inconveniences such as bubbles, wrinkles, cracks and tears. The scanners are capable to capture the models of both natural teeth and implants.
Correct the defects immediately- If an image has been distorted, scan it again and you will be able to rectify it easily.
Create 3D files- It provides the ability to access 3D digital files whenever required.
Save on shipping cost- You don’t require to ship it physically under any circumstances. This will be sent to the laboratory through management software.
Marketing tool- Technology can make you stand out from the competition. If the patients can visualize the evolution of their treatment, they will feel that they are part of the process. It will enable you to show the fractured teeth, the current position of their teeth to help them get the knowledge about their mouth. Consequently, they will recommend you to their dear and near ones.
It simplifies the process- It facilitates diagnosis and improves the effectiveness.

Comparison of Intraoral Scanners- Which one is perfect for you?
Are you thinking of acquiring one of the intraoral scanners for your dental clinic? From the wide variety of scanners, it becomes complicated to choose one because each representative says that his scanner and systems are the best in the market.
Here is a comparison criterion for the evolution of intraoral scanners.
Scanning speed- Speed of the scan is the primary factor to be considered before choosing an intraoral scanner. The ratings of the scanner provide a perfect idea of which one is slower or faster?
Scanning flow- Besides speed, it is also to be noted how smooth the experience is? Whether the scanner joins the images well or not? The evaluation of the scan indicates whether the scanner handles well in the corner and which experience has been irregular.
Size- Besides speed, the overall size and weight of the scanner are also to be taken into consideration. When judging from the size some scanners are heavier and complicated than others. It is recommended to focus on how comfortable it feels in the hand and while scanning.
Easy of use- It takes into account how the software and the hardware are managed. Moreover, and if any problem is noticed with scanning, processing and general workflow.
Price- This is an important factor considered by dentists. The prices of the scanner can vary and they depend on the cost, complements, distributors and geographical locations.
Maintenance package and subscription requirements- The subscription requirements for the use of scanners are mandatory. Some companies have an annual subscription for maintenance whereas, others claim that they don’t require any subscription.
Wireless scanner- The assessment is based on wireless option is available for the scanner or not.
Caries detection- This criterion is based on whether or not the scanner has caries detection function like – fluorescence or transillumination.
CAD Integration- Check the integrated CAD/CAM design functions
Challenges of using dental intraoral scanners for dentists-
Deep marginal lines are hard to detect- Intraoral scanners can’t detect deep marginal lines on the prepared teeth. If the patient has bleeding gums the prosthetic margins can’t work on it.
To counteract this setback, dentists need both digital and analog impressions.
A significant learning curve- Dental practitioners need time for an in-depth understanding of how IOS works. The learning curve is so fast for dentists. In addition to it, manufacturers make scanners of different brands and with different strategies. Hence, choosing the ideal intraoral scanner is critical.
Significant long-term investment- High-end scanners retail at a large price. For support services, manufacturers also ask for additional fees. So, it is only possible for a well-established dentist to withstand such an investment. Other dental clinics struggle with cash-flow problems.
Current Clinical Applicants of IOS-
Take a look at the current clinical applicants of dental intraoral scanners-
Diagnostic Purposes- The intraoral scanners are of great help for creating custom units for surgery and orthodontics.
Dental Implants- They generate optical impressions for dental implants. They are of great use while coming up with implant supported bars and bridges.
Dentist-patient communication- It is essential to win the trust of your client’s. They help the patients to know about their treatment in real-time.
Tips and tricks for using dental intraoral scanners-
Preparation is the key- By prior planning a dentist can avoid many of the setbacks. Address any fears of your patients and prepare them for the procedure. Let them know what outcomes they should expect.
Start the scan with a dry mouth- The dry mouth is perfect to capture clear images of your teeth. Ask a patient to swallow saliva or blow some air onto his teeth.
Clear screen- To prevent mashups, it is recommended to wipe the scanner screen.
Educate the future patients through past samples- To show the worth of intraoral scanners in the dentistry profession there is no better proof than your past success. This is an easy way to introduce new patients to the IOS process.
Conclusion-
The use of dental impressions and dental intraoral scanners are revolutionizing the dental profession. They are beneficial for both, a patient looking for the best treatment and a dentist who wants to maximize his skills.
The above discussed scanners offer unique features but they all are capable to meet the needs of different dental practitioners. Decide your expectations before ordering any scanner for you.

Hi! I want to get into ouji fashion but I live in the middle of nowhere! Do you know any good stores (preferably on the sharper side) that I could buy clothes? Or techniques and stuff to learn how to make my own?
Hi there! I just want to start by saying I’m not an expert on the subject of buying but I’m happy to share what I know ^^ I will say that buying ouji be prepared to find that in most egl spaces ouji is the minority. I find a lot of the time I spend browsing is just waiting for the perfect item. I am also 30, and I have a good paying job. I have been interested in the fashion for awhile but only been able to make my first significant purchase about 5 years ago. So I know in some cases throwing down 70 dollars for a vest may not be justifiable in your budget. Believe me I’ve  been there. BUT! egl pieces are clothing that you’re meant to cherish, and for the most part, very well made. Especially if they are created by an indie brand or designer.  Usually the first place I point people is Lace Market. It’s like eBay for EGL. https://egl.circlly.com, people are pretty accommodating for questions and shipping quotes. It’s great for people just starting to get into the fashion because high quality pieces can be deeply discounted. Immortal Thorn, Little Dipper, and Alice and the Pirates are some of my favorite brands to search for on there.  Next is https://www.my-lolita-dress.com they’re a reseller, which some people take issue with because they will often charge more to handle and be the go between for consumer and brand. But I will say it’s convenient if you are intimidated by shipping services like I am. I’ve ordered from here a few times, they have cancelled a pre-order on me before (I was refunded) but i just wanted to call that out. I have also bought from Clobba https://www.clobbaonline.com/  Right now they don’t have much of a selection but I have purchased form them without issue. Same for https://www.lolitawardrobe.com/ another reseller I have bought from without issue.   https://www.devilinspired.com is another reseller, I haven’t ordered here myself but a big time ouji I follow recommends them. Also LovelyLor an egl youtuber promotes them as well. https://www.wunderwelt.jp/buy/ also is a good egl seller based out of japan. They have both new and used variants of their website. Haven’t ordered here myself but they seem very easy to use for overseas buyer. Not sure where you’re located but I would double check that they are shipping overseas, because a lot of Japanese brands are not. As far as indie brands I will sing the praises of http://www.elegyclothing.com/ till the end of time. A one woman shop based in Ohio(?) I think, she makes the most amazing garments and she frequently will have ouji styles paired up with her dress releases.  Another helpful thing I’ve found is instagram, a lot of like minded creators will sort of band together, or people who wear a certain substyle will share similar brands. This is how I found out about https://www.idodeclareshop.com/ who did a limited run on an vest and pants set that have become absolute favorites of my wardrobe.  I also have supplemented my wardrobe with a few pieces from amazon, some staples like knee high socks and blouses are easy to find.  The black blouse that I’m wearing in those vampire pics was from Amazon. ‘Victorian’ is a good keyword to include in searches. From there its up to your personal taste, but I tend to look for piece with higher collars and ruffles down the front. (Egl vests tend to cross rather low on the chest, having a ruffles or a cravat can help fill the space) A basic pirate, wide brimmed hat or bowler can also be purchased from Amazon or other more mainstay stores to help bring a look together. (I’m trying to use amazon less but you can also use these same sort of rules in other mainstream stores, or on Etsy buying second hand or handmade.)  As for non-sanctioned egl official sites. I would say I’ve seen some excellent thrifted coords, that used plaids and other solid colors for their pants and vests. Long shorts that hit the knee definitely read as ouji. ‘Pumpkin Pants’ are also a term used for the poofy shorts that brands will make, cosplayers have plenty of tutorials online http://dr-cos.info/fp-pumpkinpants.html < I believe this one I used for my Ms. Muffet cosplay, but I’m using that same pattern for a new pair of ouji shorts.  I would say investing in some vests and building outwards would be my strategy if I had to start over. Ouji’s get a lot of flexibility when it comes to our coords but you can use one statement piece to really define your look and build out from there. So be creative! Look to history and other ouji’s for inspiration. Good luck I hope this helped!

Seventeen ships as Sibling AU (JunHao version)
Tumblr media
Mingyoozi version here
Another SVT ship as sibling au~!
Now is up to you to decide that you are either older than them both or younger than them both. I will recommend to be the youngest sibling but i will keep my headcanon list flexible as i can (*Mingyoozi I recommended to be middle sibling tho)
Blood related or related only by parent’s second marriage or only blood related to one of them is do able,
So not intentionally but I think linking the universe would be fun
Both of them work as idol (how lucky you are!!!)
Junhui will occasionally acts in web drama, while Minghao will occasionally make appearance in competition shows.
You are the only sibling who is not idol, Or,
You are also an idol, soloist (Making the whole world jealous of you)
Bonus if you are related to Minghao and Junhui joining the family later both of them debut. Or in reverse, related to Junhui and Minghao joins later also will be fun.
Bonus if you are not Chinese, hearing them speaks in Chinese will spark you interest of learning the language. Cues in them two teaching you phrases of Chinese.
BUT if you are Chinese too, 3 of you speaking the language will leave others with their mouth open.
Favourite spot to eat/hang out if any of the sibling gets an award or achievement would be Mingyu’s family restaurant
Close to the Mingyoozi household because of
Jihoon as songcomposer and being same age as Junhui,
Minghao and Mingyu are close in terms their artistic sense and being same age.
Mingyu cooks spicy food too which Junhui loves alot, and Junhui will occasionally suggest new menu for the restaurant.
If you are not related to Jun
When you first joined the household, you are amazed at how good he look.
You thought he is very quiet and distant because he keep looking at his phone or gaming (Gaming partner is Wonwoo, long story short, Junhui got acquainted with Wonwoo while shooting another drama!)
Shooketh af at your brother’s career if you are not an idol.
Shooketh af if you already know who he is and you basically you interrogate your parent on how did they got to date with the superstar’s parent.
Basically having a identity crisis because both of your brothers are idol
Got frightened in the morning at Jun who got back from work and is sleeping on the sofa with his eyes half open.
Made a big mistake about him being distant and hard to get familiar with. Only to find out actually he is just being shy.
Once he got acquainted with you, be prepared for the awkward jokes that make you either roll you eyes or laugh to death.
Amazed at the level of spiciness in food he can handle. Start to wonder if chilli powder and chilli flakes are just like basil to him
Bonus if you can handle similar spiciness as Junhui. He will bring you out to some restaurant he found and a weird spicy eating compeition between you two will be held
Amazed at his acting skills and singing. Felt the world need to see him shine more.
If you are into gaming or tiktok or weird filter apps, you will get close to him quicker.
Amazed at his selca skills. Cues in you shyly approaching Junhui to teach you some of his tips.
Jun talks to you about the script of his web drama and ask you be the first hand audience. So you are basically spoiled with the storyline of the drama
Junhui being loud in his room practising his upcoming solo song.
Thinks Junhui imitating others is the cutest trait he has.
You are surprised that he can cook some basic meals. Since then both of you are seen helping out each other in the kitchen.
Might caught him stroking a cat around the neighbourhood. Also him meowing.
If you are related to Jun
If you are the youngest, you get alot of piggy backs and ride on his shoulder.
You damn proud because you do feel Junhui is talented and need to shine.
Already used to all his jokes and puns that he tries to execute on variety shows because he has been trying them out on you and Minghao
Also used to jump scare because he has been doing it since you are a kid.
Either you two share the same taste bud of being capable to eat really spicy food.
OR, even though related you cannot cope with spicy food at all. Making you bond with Minghao, the other sibling on healthier food more.
Your house fridge stores at least 10 packs of sausages because your brother loves it.
You used to be the happy kid, waiting for the sausages to be grilled by Junhui
He will be the big brother that brings you to the playground, watches you playing around while he just sitting/crouching there stroking a cat.
You are so used to him singing classic 80s and 90s song when he is showering in the bathroom.
You used to record it and post it social media and that is how Junhui got scouted.
If you are an idol too, Junhui giving you acting tips for your upcoming music video
Mobile gaming with Junhui and Wonwoo.
Very much used to Junhui’s idol friends coming over. Notable mention : Wonwoo, Yanan and Samuel
You siding at his friends because of his pranks and everyone is giving you the SOS glance. Junhui would never get mad at you, but just grab your shoulder and shakes you back and forth XD
Of course you will be his partner in crime with the pranks and jokes occasionally. Making you other sibling and Junhui’s friends shake their heads but also end up joining the dork party
If you are a student, cues in your friends goes in fangirl panic state because they never believed in you until Junhui and Minghao really appear in the house. (Or you never bring your friends home because you want to avoid scandal and trouble)To give a better idea for above, maybe a childhood friend who know about your superstar brother.
If you are not related to Minghao,
Also will feel this boy is cold and distant
Mostly him reading a book on a couch
Sharing your waiting to be read book list with Minghao
Bonus if Junhui your brother actually got acquainted with Minghao before both of your parents remarried. Making Junhui be the bridge of you and Minghao to get closer.
Since Junhui sometimes goes into prankster mode, you and Minghao face palm at him alot.
Cues in Minghao giving the dead fish eye look + deep sigh because being so done.
Bonus if this happens when you and Junhui go into dork mode TOGETHER
Cues in Minghao saying :Must be tough being Junhui’s sibling. He must have done those pranks on you lot.
Also Minghao saying : But he is a good brother
Only to know Minghao is the only child and he is very happy and excited to have siblings in his life.
Again, shooketh af at your brother’s career if you are not an idol.
Again, shooketh af if you already know who he is and you basically you interrogate your parent on how did they got to date with the superstar’s parent.
Again, basically having a identity crisis because both of your brothers are idol
Seeing them both practising and discussing dance moves makes you in awe at this new sibling
If you are an idol too, cues in you being hyper and hope Minghao teaches you B-boying.
If you are already adult, you will spend time drinking wine with Minghao talking about life and armchair philosophy
At first you are intimidated by Minghao’s fashion, but you will get used to it.
Minghao coordinating your fashion of course!
If you draw as well, you might go to art store with him often. Discussing what material to use for next project. Cues in Minghao shyly comes to you asking if he could borrow some art tools or paint.
If you are related to Minghao,
The very ZEN sibling, also the im so done sibling
But Minghao will still have his dorkiness
Minghao coordinating your fashion and you be the model for Minghao’s photography hobby
Wine drinking sibling of course!
Bonus if you cannot handle alcohol even though related thus you go to Junhui with coke and juice
Bonus if you dance too, Minghao and Junhui will ask you on dance moves
Knows about his waist problem so you will advice him to reduce harsh movements
If you draw as well, you might go to art store with him often. Discussing what material to use for next project
Sitting beside him while he draws
Framing up all his artworks and hangs them all at living room
You are so used to him being savage because you know he speaks the truth.
If you are not an idol
Visiting to their workplace is always an experience
Them being protective but at the same time they are ok at you getting to know more people in your life
Always cover your face with stickers if they upload selcas of you three to Instagram
If you are an idol too :
You are invincible. I mean you get acting advice from Junhui and dance advice from Minghao. And if you are close to the Mingyoozi household, you get first hand coaching by Jihoon tho. So ya, you are invincible.
Crowned as “the person whom i am jealous the most.” by netizens.

Hi Grey, I struggle a lot with world building and I think it's easiest for me to learn by example. I was wondering if you had any books or series you'd recommend that you thought did particularly well in the world building department or that you found inspiring. I'm trying to start building a list of things to read, could be any genre
Hello there and thank you for your patience! I’ll be honest, this one’s a challenge to answer, but I’ll do my best. I’ll put it all under a read-more, because I’m going to talk a lot about why I feel these books are good places for thinking about world-building.
Northern Lights, by Philip Pullman. (fantasy)
This one comes up a lot when I’m making recommendations and that’s because I love it. For me, it was deeply formative in many ways, and especially when it came to world-building, because Pullman uses a style of world-building which really clicks for me--which is basically throwing your reader into a world and not explaining much at all, leaving many things gestured at but never explicitly said. Things just happen, things just are, and the reader has to keep up. There’s a lot that goes unsaid in this book, and it means you as a reader have to start thinking and “solving” the gaps in the world yourself. There’s room for speculation and I thrive in that environment, and lean on it heavily in my own work.
A great example of that comes in the first chapter of the novel, on the fifth page and then again on the seventh:
“As Lyra held her breath she saw the servant’s daemon (a dog, like almost all servants’ daemons) trot in and sit quietly at his feet...” - page five. “... and said something to his daemon. He was a servant, so she was a dog; but a superior servant, so a superior dog. In fact, she had the form of a red setter.” - page seven.
That’s good oblique storytelling, because you are told so much and simultaneously so little. From these two tiny pieces, you now know that:
servants usually have dog-shaped daemons
some daemons, even within a family, are “better” than others
daemons mean something about their person
But these pieces tell you enough that you can now speculate and question the world as you read on. Things like:
why do servants have dog daemons?
what makes a red setter daemon better than another dog daemon?
what does a dog daemon mean?
what is the hierarchical system of daemons, who is better than whom?
are people sorted because of their daemons, or do the daemons reflect where the person is sorted to after the fact?
what do other daemons mean?
are these meanings innate or cultural?
The book itself will directly answer maybe one or two questions, hint at a few others, and leave many completely unresolved. But that’s not bad world-building. For me, that’s the kind of world-building I love best. The book can now say, “this person’s daemon is a butterfly,” and you will be primed to read symbolism and significance into that, even in moments where the book itself doesn’t give you any. You’re a participant in creating the world as you read. A little goes a long way.
The Discworld novels, by Terry Pratchett. (fantasy, comedy) If you’re trying to pick a first book, start here.
And now for something completely different. Pratchett’s Discworld is an absurdist world, created to satirise fantasy tropes and play as the stage for social and political commentary. What makes Discworld so interesting as a place to learn about world-building is that it is a world that doesn’t take chronology or “consistency”  or “authenticity” seriously. Where a lot of fantasy writers will stress over making sure every detail lines up, and their fans will often get very upset if they find anything “inconsistent” or “incorrect”, Pratchett’s world entirely rejects that way of doing things. Pratchett commented:
“[S]ometimes I even forget [...] where things are ... I don’t think [...] even the most rabid fan expects complete consistency within Discworld, because in Ankh-Morpork you have what is apparently a Renaissance city, but with elements of early Victorian England, and the medieval world is still hanging on. It’s in a permanent state of turmoil, which is very interesting for the author.” (quoted in Hills, Guilty of Literature).
There’s something very liberated and fluid in how Discworld forms, because it’s such a committed pastiche, but it doesn’t at all (at least, for me) undercut believing in the characters or story. I adore Discworld and its characters. I think it’s very valuable to read if you’re in fantasy writing (or speculative fiction in general), because it’s easy to fall into thinking that unless you make everything Perfect and Realistic and Consistent, your world-building isn’t good.
Something else about Discworld worth noting is that, despite being absurd and fluid, it is also grounded in the real. Pratchett’s world is in turmoil, but it includes sewer systems, passages of trade and commerce, and a pervasive sense of the civic life happening and living outside of the plot-line: it’s not just a diorama to be walked through, but a place where people exist and do mundane things and have everyday needs. I personally find it fascinating that the story manages to exist sort of balancing at oppositional ends of the “realism” spectrum at all times, but I think that’s also the key to why it is so successful at what it does.
(Side note: Matt Hills’ chapter in Guilty of Literature is a great read if you want to know more!)
Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie (science fiction)
I’m not a big reader of science fiction, because my heart is with fantasy, always. But this series was super interesting and I can recommend it, especially if science fiction is more your flavour! It’s been a while since I’ve read it, so I can’t give the same amount of detail as I’ve done above, but it was thoughtful and intriguing and I loved the ways this trilogy defamiliarised and refamiliarised ideas through the world and characters.
“The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas,” by Ursula K. Le Guin. (short story)
It’s only four pages long, but it’s haunting. I’ve put this story on the list because I feel like Ursula K. Le Guin belongs in many conversations about world-building; her work, in her time, was often radical--and remains so, in many cases. She didn’t flinch away from making her worlds alien, not in the sense of writing about space and people out among the stars (which admittedly she did also do!), but truly questioning and challenging cultural and societal norms and creating new ones, even (and especially) when they were uncomfortable to the status quo.
To me, that’s a core part of good world-building. You can just recreate the world we live in, with all the biases we’re raised to have, with the beliefs and expectations of conduct we have, with all the same bigotry--or you can push yourself to pull it all apart and pick from it the pieces you want to play with. You can push things to their extreme limits, or erase them entirely, or just... slide things a little to the left and make the whole world slightly off. Being able to be flexible in your thinking is vital for making vivid, interesting worlds, and Ursula K. Le Guin's work is a place you can start exploring that kind of thing if you’re unfamiliar with it.
For instance, in her novel Left Hand of Darkness, there is only one pronoun (a theme you’ll notice in Ancillary Justice) and the people of the planet Gethin change sex regularly. In her collection of short stories, “The Birthday of the World and Other Stories,” she writes about sedoretu, a four-way marriage she invents, as well as exploring gender, religion, culture, and society. Any of these are worth taking a look at, if you’re feeling a little boxed in.
However, despite saying all this: I don’t really enjoy her writing! I don’t have fun reading Le Guin’s work in practice; it doesn’t mesh with me beyond my delight at the conceptual elements she discusses. I often feel about reading her work like how kids think about medicine: tastes kind of awful, but it’s good for you. I’m grateful to her for paving the way, but I don’t read her work for fun.
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making, by Catherynne M. Valente.
I’m throwing this one in the ring for a few reasons. One is that I am heavily indebted to nonsense; I grew up on Dr Seuss, Roald Dahl, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland + Alice Through the Looking-glass, Edward Gorey, A. A. Milne, H. R. Pufnstuf, and a little later, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Discworld. This book feels representative of that big love, and taps into what I love about nonsense.
Another reason is that it’s a good example of what I think of as delightful lawlessness in storytelling. It feels--as respectfully and lovingly as I can say this--like a game of mad libs turned into a book, because of how free and wild it is with what is allowed to happen. I think it’s very difficult to do something like this well, but I also think it’s a great place to play around when you’re first beginning to get to grips on world-building. Spin a wheel of options and go, “okay, so there’s a manticore in the basement, what now?” Make up reasons for things on the spot as a game for yourself. Ask and answer questions, just for fun! “Why is there a manticore there?”  “It got in through the magic portal.”  “Where’s the magic portal?”  “It’s an old picture of the protagonist’s grandmother.”  “Why is it a portal?” “The grandmother is secretly a witch and the ex-queen of a fantasy land.” “Why is the manticore here?” “Come to retrieve the queen, but accidentally takes the protagonist by mistake.” “Why does the manticore want the queen?” “Extreme Trivia Night at the Castle has really sucked lately. Also she misses her.” And just like that, you’ve got the start of a wacky but not impossible-to-tell story.
My final suggestion isn’t a book, but a podcast!
Be The Serpent (a podcast of extremely deep literary merit).
A fortnightly podcast by three charming writers who discuss a different theme or topic each episode (using a couple of texts as reference material), and will also make media recommendations. I love listening to it and it’s a great place to think about writing, both as a reader and as a writer. I don’t have a lot of writing friends myself, unfortunately, so it’s honestly so valuable to me to be able to hear them discuss their process and ideas on topics I care about.
I hope this helps! Best of luck to you, and please feel free to write in if you have any other questions.
