Thinking about Odysseus' epithet 'master mariner'. How his father was on the ship Argos (and how he probably named his dog after the ship). How he was always surrounded by the sea, perhaps raised by the tides. He must have been sailing since he was young. He knows the mast, he knows the rope and the deck. He knows saltwater and sea spray. His father probably told him what to do when a storm threatens to crash on him and the waves open to swallow him. But it did not prepare him for the divine. Did he ever think of his father's voice, standing by his shoulder and guiding his hand? And did Laertes ever think of his son whom he taught to sail, now wandering and at its mercy? Just thinking about how, even when he thought he knew the sea, it still broke him. How it still turned on him. Once it was so familiar, and now it's a stranger to him, one he cannot understand no matter his efforts. It was one of his greatest threats in the end. The Pendulum Syrinx. Just a giant parrot leviathan 👁️ 👁️

It’s not obvious whether or not they understand what they hear but they tend to hang around larger ships with many passengers, showing signs of being ‘social’, however unnerving their presence may be. A ship that notices they’re being tailed by one might welcome this or chase them off with loud noises if they have the means. They’re also attracted to music if they can hear it. They can adjust their own volume as well, at their size they’re known to shatter some eardrums if they aren’t careful.

They can come in many different sizes, with more or less appendages, they usually stay in the range of leviathan class though. Their heads can also come in various shapes but they generally stay a symmetrical axe shape.

I just really wanted to make a leviathan that mimics sounds because I always love that mechanic used in creatures, whether it’s scary or not.

The Pendulum Syrinx

The slits on the sides of its head are mouths. It exhibits a powerful ability to mimic, picking up signals and sounds using a form of echolocation in addition to electromagnetic waves. It adds these sounds to its ‘library’.

It’s shown the ability to mimic voices, music, wildlife and even machinery; whatever it may pick up from passing ships or radio signals.

The first recorded had befriended an fisherman who frequently played her hurdy gurdy while aboard her boat, earning the creature the nickname ‘Gurdy’.

It’s not seen to be particularly hostile, mostly just a curious nuisance. However, it’s a highly intelligent leviathan and should be handled with excessive caution regardless.

Last image: A curious Syrinx will often perform ‘soundbathing’, where it will float just below or above the surface of the water and take in its environment.

Does Heartstar/Tigerstar II have thalassophobia(fear of deep water/drowning) would certainly make sense given his family's entire Deal with the lake. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The desire to CinemaSins Ding poetic imagery is the death of visual metaphor and the bane of creativity. Kill the impulse. The moonpool is as deep and clean as it needs to be in spite of being canonically a stillwater pool and logically full of algae and microbes. Magic cat god water, full of StarClan Magic (tm)

We do not need to see the cats fishing Rowanstar's body out, or an accurate estimate of pool depth, or its PH level. StarClan's emotions do wonderful things when miracles occur. A wizard with a big pool cleaning net did it.

THE PLANKTONIC DENIZENS OF SIDE ORDER

As a marine biology hobbyist I ADORE the fact that all the spire denizens are planktons. Please enjoy some funky fellows:

crab zoea

young medusa-stage jellyfish (same life stage as the familiar jellies in Inkopolis and Splatsville, presumably fresh off the ephyra stage of growth)

amphipod or lobster larva

ostracod

a young pteropod, most likely (sea angels are part of this group!)

I think this weird-horse-looking one is supposed to be an oceanic water flea? I'm the most stumped on this dude

And of course our lucifer shrimp Cipher!

Now I can't find any photos online, but throughout various levels of Side Order I also noticed jellyfish ephyra and polyps, and nematodes or perhaps larval flatworms? Even baby cephalopods are considered plankton! (iykyk)

Plankton are often the most basic trophic level in marine environments, providing stability and order to the ecosystem; if there's an imbalance in their population, that causes a butterfly effect among many other types of sealife. They're the perfect choice for Marina's Memverse.
